s her three children became increasingly independent, with two off to college and a third on the path, Bobbiegail Simpson started looking into new adventures to direct her time and energy. “I have volunteered for many years through our church and schools but felt a calling to get more connected with adult women and do something I really enjoyed,” said the Atlanta native who currently resides in Cumming. After exploring numerous franchise opportunities, Simpson came upon Waxing the City, a facial and body waxing concept which has grown from one boutique location in Denver in 2003 to more than 80 locations across the country. “I flew out to Denver [in 2015], met the original owners, Summer, Alex, Marilyn and Robin, and fell in love with their values and philosophy,” Simpson said. “I immediately knew that this is how I wanted to run my business and help women.” After a yearlong process to secure franchising rights and other approvals, Simpson opened the first Waxing the City location in Georgia in late 2016, located on Windward Parkway in Alpharetta. “The biggest challenges [to opening] were finding the right location and all the negotiations in regards to lease, financing, building contractor, etc. and all of the paperwork involved,” Simpson said. “I stayed persistent in getting it all done, but sometimes it was overwhelming.” The salon specializes in “b and b services” (brows and bikini) but also offers a host of other waxing services from head to toe. The business employs only highly trained Cerologist technicians and delivers a waxing experience once only available in exclusive (and expensive) spas, Simpson added. Though she worked in the mortgage banking industry in the early 1990s prior to having children, Simpson’s actual experience in small

business operations was limited to working in husband Robert’s business, Callaway Security and Sound. His expertise helped "guide her through the" early days, and he helps with the financial aspects of her company. Simpson had no experience in the beauty industry either, but learned it all quickly in the months leading up to opening day in December 2016. Simpson said she focused on opening a business that would provide an optimal experience for her customers. “I wanted our customers to leave our salon feeling amazing and confident,” she said. “And I wanted to build personal relationships with our clients that extended beyond the salon environment.” She opened at the height of the holidays, at the end of the year, which was a relatively slow time. But she used that to fine tune the aspects of her business which helped her when business quickly picked up after the first of the year. Simpson said the client experience at Waxing the City is unique, from using a specially formulated wax from Spain, to tested procedures that guarantee less discomfort, to using only licensed estheticians who receive intensive training at the corporate office to learn best practices from the industry’s top professionals. While 70 percent of her clients are women, there is a growing number of men who are regular customers. “Most men don’t like hair in places that can be seen, especially during the summer months. We have very dedicated male clients that come in consistently for hair removal on the back, chest, ears, nose, brows, etc.,” Simpson said. Although the Alpharetta location is the only Waxing the City location in Georgia, Simpson said she loves that there are 80 other locations across the country that provide support and networking. The company is on track to open 50 more locations by the end of the year, and Simpson is also looking to expand her reach into other locations in Georgia. She says she enjoys providing a service to

women that makes them feel beautiful and more confident in themselves. “I believe in the waxing lifestyle, I love what Waxing the City stands for and I want to be able to show people who may have had [bad experiences in the past] that here we truly care about our clients, and we want them to have a great experience and results.” ■

Sunshine on a Ranney Day

Nonprofit gives independence through room makeovers By KATHLEEN STURGEON

rightening up one’s living space can truly change their mindset. And Since 2012, that’s what Holly and Peter Ranney have been doing by bringing a little bit of sunshine to local families through room renovations. The couple focuses on renovating homes for children with special needs and restoring hope for their families through their nonprofit, Sunshine on a Ranney Day based in Roswell. “Once you witness a child who is in a wheelchair see their new wheelchair-accessible bathroom for the first time, wheel right into a roll-in shower on their own or wheel up to the vanity and turn the faucet on for the first time, you want to help so many more,” Holly Ranney said. “We take for granted things that are easy for us to do daily that some others cannot. They gain independence.” The recipients are often referred from local hospitals and children’s health organizations. The finalists are then chosen based on available resources and the child’s needs. The first makeover completed in July 2012 was for an 11-year-old boy with a brain tumor who wanted a military bunker room. Once the renovation was complete and the boy saw his new room, the couple was hooked and knew their mission was bigger than they imagined. The nonprofit will complete around 20 projects this year and is working with a counseling center to renovate two kid’s therapy rooms. “Being a husband-and-wife team and seeing something that was an ‘idea’ turn into something that is way beyond our expectations is one of the best moments we’ve had,” Ranney said. “We take great pride in the quality of our work, professionalism and passion that is put into each makeover.” It costs from $8,000-$15,000 for a bedroom makeover, $10,000-$30,000 for a therapy room and $18,000-$35,000 for a wheelchair bathroom. But through partnerships with local companies and donors, they are able to offer makeovers to families at no cost. Holly has a degree in interior design and home furnishings merchandising and spent 12 years as a buyer for Rooms to Go Kids. Peter grew up in the building industry and worked several summers with his dad in their family business doing construction. Additionally, the nonprofit is a licensed general contractor and specializes in wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, in-home therapy rooms and wheelchair ramps/ lifts. After the work is completed, Ranney said the best part is getting to reveal the new rooms, with the event sometimes drawing crowds of hundreds of people. “When they walk in you can see that they have a

renewed sense of hope,” Ranney said. “It’s their special day, and they get to see how much they are loved and supported.” The team is given a tight timeline to get the renovations completed which often bring obstacles and challenges. “We do not want to stress the family with a long construction process,” Ranney said. “Many times when we are renovating a bathroom to be wheelchair accessible, it’s the only bathroom on the main floor for the child to use.” Television shows also often put a false timeline in

people’s heads by making them think it’ll take a few days for renovation, she said. But with the company partners often donating time while doing their everyday jobs, too, they are always in a time crunch. “Peter and I also have very high expectations for design and the quality of workmanship, which can become challenging,” Ranney said. “Our name is on everything we do and want everyone to treat our makeovers like it was our very own home.” To learn more about them, visit sunshineonaranneyday.com. ■

North Carolina novelist and interior design blogger creates characters who share a sense of style By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer

W

hen North Carolina author Kristy Woodson Harvey was in the area to launch her third novel, one of her stops was a Mother’s Day tea at Roswell’s Urban Relics. Since her latest release, “Slightly South of Simple,” features a character with an interior design business, and since Harvey herself writes a popular website blog, Design Chic, fans were treated to a double bill: book talk plus design tips surrounded by Urban Relic’s decor resources. Harvey, whose first novel, “Dear Carolina,” was long-listed for the Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize, recently took time from her book tour to discuss combining her twin passions – writing and interior design. Your new novel’s main character, Ansley Murphy, has a waterfront interior design business and is a mom of three grown daughters. You and your own mother blog at mydesignchic.com. What do writing and designing have in common? For me, the process of writing and the process of designing are so similar. In both cases, you start with something blank and hope to transform it into something meaningful that creates an emotional response. But, on a surface North Carolina author Kristy level, it’s just a fun combination! Since Woodson Harvey. my protagonist is an interior designer, it seemed like a fun way to combine two of the things I love. Given your blog and the book’s themes, what interior design questions are most often asked at signings? A lot of women want tips for downsizing or want to know something very specific. Like, at my last event, a woman asked how to create a British Colonial look in a small bathroom. Someone wanted to know something about stripes and how they affect the feel of a room. I love talking about coastal decor as well because people assume that’s easy, but I always think that’s one of the trickiest things to implement well without it looking cheesy or overdone. Any suggestions for adding style and sophistication to either a bare room or a small space, as Ansley deals with when her high school sweetheart moves back to her coastal town and needs design help? The first step in adding style to any space, big or small, is focusing on using things you love. Especially in a small space, you want your home to be a reflection of who you are and what is important to you, so prominently display that beautiful vase or handmade bowl. It will make you happy and immediately give you good feelings when you walk in your home. The most important thing when it comes to decorating small spaces is streamlining everything. In a larger space, it might work well to have a table full of favorite picture frames. In a small space, that

can be overwhelming. Try to simplify your accessories and pare down to the necessities so that everything has a place. Clutter makes a home of any size feel closed in. As in your new book, finances can be a concern. How is it possible to affordably create beautiful spaces that reflect a family’s unique interests? One of the least expensive, easiest ways to begin to do that is with family photos. From gallery walls to frames of favorite memories, it’s instant art with an inexpensive price tag. Since romance is at the heart of all your work – your second book, “Lies and Other Acts of Love,” was, among other accolades, a Romantic Times top pick – questions about bedding and bedrooms must be popular. What are some general guidelines? Do keep your bedding white and cotton. Dark bedding screams “college dorm room” and can be very off-putting to some people, as can your Hello Kitty sheets. Silks and satins … just, no. Please, no. (Unless it is your satin pillowcase that keeps your blowout looking fresh. You get a pass for that one.) Do keep your bedroom clean and clutter-free. It is so important! Plus, simple actions like making your bed every morning can be a wonderful boost for your frame of mind, which can only help you to put your best foot forward when it comes to finding love. “Slightly South of Simple” is the first title in your Peachtree Bluff series. Will the next book also feature interior design? The next book, “The Secret to Southern Charm,” is really the middle sister Sloane’s book and focuses on her love story with her husband, Adam, and a new phase in her life where she is dealing with something that no military wife ever wants to. Interior design actually plays an even bigger role because Sloane, a trained interior designer, decides to put her degree back to work and start helping her mom out again. How can readers keep up with you and your work? People can follow me at kristywoodsonharvey.com, mydesignchic. com, on Instagram and Twitter at @kristywharvey and on Facebook at Facebook.com/kristywoodsonharvey. And come see me June 28 when I’ll be speaking at the Gainesville Newcomers Club Luncheon at the Chattahoochee Country Club. ■

What if you’ve never been in a canoe before? Don’t worry – the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s “Family Canoe Days” are designed to provide a relaxed and enjoyable introduction to the sport. “If you’re looking to become more comfortable in a canoe but are not yet quite sure about a trip on the river,” says Alicia Evans, visitor experience manager at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, “then this is the activity for you.” These 90-minute classes, which are held on one of the Nature Center’s ponds, are designed to teach the basics

t’s summertime in the south, and it’s hot outside. What you need is relief from the heat – and one of the best places to find it is just down the road on the Chattahoochee River. The cool and refreshing Chattahoochee is the perfect antidote to hot weather, and a great way to experience it is on one of the guided canoe trips offered by the Chattahoochee Nature Center. What can you expect? Under the helpful guidance of an experienced instructor, you’ll learn essential canoeing skills including basic paddling techniques. You’ll also enjoy races, games and probably some refreshing water splashing too. During the summer, Family Canoe Days are offered twice a month on Saturdays from 10:30 till noon (“That

way we can beat the midday heat,” says Alicia) and are open to people ages 5 and up. Cost is $15 per person for the general public and $10 for Nature Center members.

An evening float

One of the most popular ways to enjoy the river is to join one of the Nature Center’s “Evening Floats.” These two-and-a-half-hour trips take place on the Bull Sluice portion of the river that’s more like a lake with no rapids or shoals to worry about – just delightfully cool water and a spectacularly beautiful setting. During the summer (June through August) CNC’s Evening Floats begin at 6 p.m. During September and October, trips start at 5 p.m. That gives you plenty of time to explore the river while learning about its natural and cultural history under the watchful eyes of your guide, an experienced paddler and naturalist who is CPR/First Aid Certified.

This kind of canoeing is fun and easy, especially the way CNC does it. The canoes carry two adults (a smaller child can sit in the middle) or one adult and two kids. CNC provides all equipment (including a personal flotation device for each participant). However, you might want to bring water, snacks and insect repellant for the trip. What awaits you on one of these floats? “Serenity,” said one recent participant who made the trip with her two elementary-age children. “I never knew how peaceful it could be on the river, especially as close as we are to Atlanta.” Wildlife awaits you too. You’ll almost certainly see water birds, including herons along the river’s bank. Other wildlife sometimes shows up, too, including deer – and if you’re lucky you might even spot a beaver or an otter. The near-silent passage of your canoe helps to make such encounters possible in a way that many others miss altogether. Evening Floats are open to folks ages 6 and up and

are suitable for beginning as well as advanced paddlers. Cost is $30 per person for the general public and $25 for CNC members.

Date night with a difference

Tired of the same old dinner-and-movie routine? Then line up a sitter and think about the Nature Center’s twice-a-month “Date Night on the River.” This unique experience is offered twice a month, and it’s just the thing for hopeless romantics like me. It’s sure to make for an evening you’ll remember. Bring a picnic dinner (the site opens early to Date Night couples) and then enjoy a stroll around the Nature Center before embarking on a guided sunset canoe trip for two. Date Night is designed for folks 21 and older, and you should register by the Wednesday before each trip. Cost is $30 per person for the general public and $25 for CNC members. ■

A

team of eighth-graders have recently made history as the first robotics team, not just at their school, but in the entire state of Georgia, to be invited to the First Lego League International Open Championship. And what’s more, the team is all female. “When Georgia’s FLL Operational Partner, Jeff Rosen, shared the news, I was elated,” said the team’s coach Yasin Kaya. “He explained that not only were they the first allfemale team, but also that they were the first team ever to be chosen. I was speechless. This honor is not lost on these talented young ladies or myself.” The team, Fulton Science Academy Private School’s Control+Alt+Delete, was chosen for this invitation-only competition after their successful season at regional, super regional and state FLL tournaments. They will soon face off against the best of the best that the world has to offer. Over 95 other teams from countries such as Egypt, India, Brazil, Israel, Japan, China and the United Kingdom will 14 | northsidewoman.com | june2017

compete with Control+Alt+Delete this summer in England. But to get there, they still need sponsors and help raising $10,000 to cover travel-related expenses. Tax-deductible contributions can be made to donate. fultonscienceacademy.org/robotics. “This team is one that never says ‘never,’” said Rosen. “They are beautifully poised to represent Georgia and the United States this summer in the UK. Everyone is so excited to follow the team’s progress. These young women are very positive role models and I hope will encourage more girls to pursue (STEAM) science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics careers.” Their achievements are especially notable considering the gender gap in STEAM careers. Less than one quarter of these fields are currently occupied by women, according to a 2016 report by the National Science Foundation. Over 32,000 robotics teams compete annually at the lower-level FLL tournaments. The competitions challenge students to resolve real-world problems using their skills in STEAM fields. Ultimately, they are tasked with designing, building and programming a robot.

This year’s theme is “Animal Allies,” which asked students to propose their solutions with the use of an animal. Control+Alt+Delete decided to tackle this problem by exploring ways to eliminate mosquitos without resorting to pesticides or other chemicals. Ultimately, they turned to bats as a natural remedy and adopted the bat as their team’s symbol. As part of the FLL competition, Control+Alt+Delete constructed a bat house with a vent that was programmed to automatically open or close to maintain temperatures bats prefer. They also constructed several smaller mosquito traps, using a combination of carbon dioxide, fans and LED lights, to attract the insects and suck them into an enclosure. The international championship will be held June 2125 at the University of Bath, U.K. “We chose the Control+Alt+Delete, because if you push the keys on the keyboard, they will completely override the computer,” said team member Claire Bowman. “By themselves, they have their own individual strengths, but when you use them together, they can do anything.” ■

June Northside Man: Justin Hawkins City of residence: Cumming, GA Hometown: Born in West Palm Beach, FL; moved to Cumming, GA in 2000. Age: 25 Education: South Forsyth High School, Kennesaw State University where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in political science and public policy Occupation: Senior biopharmaceutical representative with Amgen, which is a biopharmaceutical company based in Thousand Oaks, Calif. My responsibility is to sell two biologic products with rheumatologists and primary care physicians managing a wide range territory in North Georgia. I am also the chairman of the Forsyth County Republican Party.

How do you balance your professional work with your other responsibilities, like being chairman of the Forsyth Republican Party?

How has your young age played a part in your professional and volunteering worlds? Does it tend to positively or negatively impact your work? My age plays a major role as I am most often judged first based on my appearance than substance. Through my professional and

political life, age has played a major role. In both professions, I'm the youngest in my world. Therefore, people believe I'm overly ambitious and sometimes question my motives and wonder if I'm being genuine or calculated. I've learned that goes with the territory and the only thing I can do is be honest, reliable and work harder than anyone around me. Everything else will speak for itself.

What are the positives and challenges to living in such a high growth area like Forsyth County?

I genuinely believe Forsyth County is the greatest place to live and work in Georgia. Growing up in South Forsyth, I have seen my community transform. That growth brings challenges with overcrowded schools and congested roads. However, the fact that we have thousands wanting to reside here means we are doing something right. We have the best education system in the state. We are positioned to be the hub for high-tech corporations and regional offices. We are adjacent to Lake Lanier and 30 miles from Atlanta and the north Georgia mountains. Lastly, we are privileged to have two universities and colleges, University of North

Our board-certified physician, Dr. Carla Roberts, and our nurse practitioner, Cyndi Witt, provide a comprehensive patient-centered approach to women’s healthcare in a soothing, friendly and elegant environment.

The single greatest influence in my life is my faith in Christ and God. I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for leaders in my community who invested and gave me guidance and inspiration an 18-year-old kid needed at the time. Otherwise my life would have gone in an opposite direction. I was told early on in life that the one requirement of me is to pay it forward what they did for me onto someone else. That's the greatest gift a man can do. We have an obligation to look out for our fellow man and community. It's about what you can do with what you have.

What are you the proudest of the community?

I am proudest of our community unifying and coming together to fight addiction and the drug epidemic in Forsyth County. I have lost family members, friends and classmates to alcohol and heroin. Every day, I wake up praying I won't lose someone I know to this horrible disease. I am going to have the Forsyth County Republican Party go beyond its scope to join our elected officials and mothers, fathers and neighbors who have experienced this darkness in their life.

So, in your free time, where will we find you?

1. My therapy is the gym, every day 2. On the tennis court, I was trained and homeschooled during middle school and was top 10 in the state during my youth 3. On the lake, boating enjoying the water 4. On my deck listening to Eric Church with a Cuban cigar. ■

JUSTIN HAWKINS

I am in a unique circumstance as I'm one of the youngest leaders in the Republican Party nationwide. I have a full-time job and so this requires me to have major discipline. It requires me to wake up at 6 a.m. and work until 1 a.m. Some say I don't have the typical 20s lifestyle, but that is OK with me because I am doing what I love every day.

How did you get first involved in local politics?

ven though we’ve had a beautiful spring in Atlanta, the hotter days are just around the corner. As responsible pet owners, we all need to keep in mind keeping our pets cool and comfortable during the fierce Atlanta summer. First off, never leave your pet in a hot car! On a day when the outside temperature is 80 degrees, the inside of a car can reach 100 degrees in just 10 minutes. On a 90 degree day, the inside of a car can reach 119 degrees in 20 minutes. We have had so many tragedies in Georgia with people leaving pets in a hot car — you would think we would all be mindful of this. But still we have people who take the risk, thinking they can make a quick stop and their pets will be fine. They may not be...so just don’t do it. For the outside dog, the most important factors are to make sure your dog has plenty of water as well as some shade to get out of the direct sun. Also, allow your pet to get used to the hotter weather gradually. Do not take a dog who has been primarily staying inside with air conditioning and suddenly put them outside all day. That’s a recipe for disaster. When exercising your pet outside, once again allow them to gradually get used to the hotter weather. If you walk with your dog, do it on a regular basis. Be careful of the surface that your dog is walking on. That asphalt gets hot! Also, pets should not all of a sudden do very vigorous activity in the hot weather. I have seen cases of people allowing their dog to play with other dogs, and the dogs race around without taking a break. Yes, they are having fun running with their buddies, but many dogs will not do anything half way. They run full force and can get overheated. If you see your dog start to stumble, stop him immediately. He may be in the beginning stages of a heat stroke and could progress to collapsing. If you think your dog is having a reaction to the heat, give him a cool water bath (not cold) which will help lower his temperature. Take him to your veterinarian -- even if he seems to feel better. There are secondary medical conditions that can begin after the worst part of a heat stroke appears to be subsiding so be sure to get him checked out. Summer provides us lots of opportunities to be outside with our pets. Just take some precautions and enjoy the summer safely. ■

tips to help you make the most of your visit to the farmers market

1. Visit Early for Selection, Late for Price If there are seasonal items you want, such as berries or heirloom tomatoes, get to the market early before they sell out. If you’re on a budget, head to the market in the last hour or so. Many farmers will discount their items, so they don’t have pack them up.

2. Do a Lap

When you arrive at the farmers market, avoid the temptation to buy the first beautiful pint of strawberries you lay eyes on; you may be able to get a better price two stalls down. Do a quick lap around the entire market without buying anything to compare prices. Then, on your second pass, start shopping.

3. Know What’s in Season

If you’re going to shop at the farmers market, then you’ll need to plan your meals around the fruits and vegetables that are in season — you won’t be able to get

asparagus in March, for example. The benefit, however, is that by eating seasonal produce, you’ll get fruits and vegetables at the peak of ripeness (and deliciousness). Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with what’s in season; most farmers markets can provide you with a chart of what you can expect to be available each month. If you know a bit of what to expect when you get to the farmers market, making decisions at each stall is much easier. Learn what grows in your area when and talk to the growers about what will be coming to market in upcoming weeks.

4. Get to Know the Vendors

Nobody knows their product better than the farmers that produce them, and farmers markets give you the opportunity to hear what's what straight from the horse's mouth. Make regular visits, and you may even find yourself getting better bargains or being offered special products for your loyalty.

The farmer-customer relationship benefits you both. When you demand high-quality products, farmers may change their practices to bring that product to the market. It shows the farmer that people are willing to pay a little more for quality.

5. Bring Big Bags & Small Change

Bringing a sturdy, reusable shopping bag to the farmers market not only makes sense for the environment, it's also nicer to the farmers and easier on your hands. Their sturdy handles are way more comfortable than cheap plastic loops. Although vendors will make change, purchases will go easier and faster if you have exact (or close to exact) change. Good luck at your local farmer's market! I hope you grab your reusable grocery bag, take in the beauty of the richly-colorful produce, grab some samples of homemade chocolate, and strike up a conversation with a farmer! ■ source: www.dailymom.com

ey, all you Southern Gals! Will you be spending time in the pool, lake, boat, river or ocean this summer? I hear a resounding, “Yes!” For the few of you who said a dreaded, “No,” with a shudder, is it because you don’t have a swimsuit that makes you feel confident and secure? Perhaps you have many suits, but do you have the right one for the activity? Sporty tankinis with a modest skirt or boyshorts for boating with your teenage son’s friends, or mom/toddler day at the pool. Fashionably sleek one or two piece with matching cover-up for lounging on the deck of a cruise ship. Rash guard shirt and board shorts for kayaking or whitewater rafting on one of the many North Georgia rivers. One of the most frustrating things to shop for is women’s swimsuits. Let’s face it, the lighting in most store dressing rooms is awful. The mirrors may not give the right view or maybe TOO MANY views. Here are my on-line suggestions for shopping for swim and beach wear this year: Lands End, Swimsuits for All and Raising Wild. Lands End has a great selection of rash guard tops and coordinating bottoms. Go to http://www.landsend.com/ for that perfect “family boating day” swimsuit. You will feel confident knowing that you are securely covered while tubing, hauling gear in and out of the boat or going down the waterslide. Swimsuits for All specializes in swimsuits for girls with curves in sizes 4-22. Whether you are cruising on a ship

or manning your own ducky on a river, they have the suit for you. Plus-sized model Ashley Graham has her own line of delicious suits on this site. http://www. swimsuitsforall.com/ Raising Wild swimwear is designed by a pair of sisters that grew up in the Florida waters. They wanted modest, edgy suits for fun function and fashion. My favorite style in the Vanessa. The added bonus for this style is that it is nursing friendly. https://www.raisingwild.com/

Tips for shopping on-line for suits:

Check sizing charts, know the difference between regular, short and long torso suits, read customer reviews. Take advantage of free return shipping or in-store return policy.

Two cents on a two-piece Tips to finding the right fit for your summer suit

The Vanessa Pistachio from www.raisingwild. com.

Tips for trying on suits at home:

Try them on in the morning when you feel fresh and thinner. Wear high heels. I am not joking! Your legs will look longer and give you a more positive perspective about your body and the suit. Complete the outfit with coordinating cover-up, hat, statement sunglasses and sandals (this is where you are supposed to wear flip-flops: (not the mall, restaurants, office or church), Ladies, I DARE you to wear high-heeled sandals with your cruise

ship suit. Where else can you get away with it? Those other cruisers will never see you again. Your legs will look long and fabulous while you strut on the promenade deck like a pageant queen.

Final tips:

If you find a suit that makes you feel and look fabulous, buy it! Cost doesn’t matter when it comes to your self-confidence. A drawer full of cheap suits that you don’t wear is worthless. A swimsuit that makes you look and feel like a million bucks: Priceless. ■

From shore to store Kathleen’s Catch offers fresh option at two area locations

By CANDY WAYLOCK

K

athleen Hulsey knows her way around seafood, despite the fact the Johns Creek resident and owner of Kathleen’s Catch seafood markets, has never spent a day on the lake, fishing pole in hand. “[My husband] Mike is my connection with the seafood business. I love to cook fish and eat fish and sell fish, but I have NEVER been fishing!” Kathleen Hulsey laughed. On the other hand, Mike, her husband of 37 years, spent more than three decades working with a major distributor of seafood and knows the industry inside and out. When Kathleen decided to open her own business after her two children were grown, seafood seemed the logical choice. “There was literally no place in Atlanta to buy fresh, all-natural seafood other than the grocery stores and, let’s face it, grocery stores are simply not set up to do the job right,” said Kathleen, an Atlanta native whose past careers included commercial real estate and construction. Recognizing there was a gap to fill in providing the public freshly caught seafood, Hulsey opened the first location of Kathleen’s Catch in Johns Creek in 2011. In the summer of 2015, she opened the second site in downtown Milton. Hulsey’s business model is simple – to provide the widest selection of the freshest seafood products available. “If we have done our job correctly, our customers know a little more about the food they are eating, where it came from and how to prepare it when they leave our stores,” she noted. “And they are confident that they are eating absolutely all natural, chemical free food.” The demand for seafood is at an all-time high in the United States. The average person consumed 15.5 pounds of seafood in 2015, up from 14.6 pounds in 2014, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) annual report on U.S. consumption. Hulsey is fully aware that her customers are not only adding more seafood to their diet, but they are also making educated choices, as far as freshness and quality. While much of the seafood supply comes from the same places, the journey to the table is another story. “I get [my products] every day, and [it does not go] through a warehouse, transferred to different trucks and adding days to the life of the fish,” Hulsey said. Extending the shelf life of fish for several days also requires some retailers to add chemicals to the products. At Kathleen’s Catch, Hulsey said seafood is delivered fresh every day, six days a week, direct from the processor, and never frozen or chemically altered. “The grocery stores get their fish from the same place I do. But here, seafood is all we do,” she said.

“When you come to my store you get me, my daughter and my employees who only sell fish.” It is a family affair at Kathleen’s Catch. In addition to Mike, daughter Sara is the manager of the Milton location. As far as specialties of the house, Hulsey said salmon is by far the best seller. She buys Atlantic salmon responsibly farmed by Verlasso, which is listed as a good choice on the Monterrey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program. “All the farmed fish we buy is from the very best farms in the world – no growth hormones, no preventative antibiotics, low pen densities, low to no environmental impact,” Hulsey explained. In addition to farmed seafood, Kathleen’s Catch offers many choices for wild fish as well. “I buy domestic fish as often as possible so that it gets to my store quickly with a limited carbon footprint,” Hulsey said. Her long list of direct suppliers includes red snapper from Panama City, grouper from Madeira Beach, Fla., shrimp from Brunswick, Ga., or Holden Beach, N.C., striped bass from the Chesapeake, monkfish from along the East Coast, and of course, wild Alaskan salmon when it is in season, she said. Hulsey recognizes that many people love fish but are hesitant to prepare it themselves at home. So staff at Kathleen’s Catch can help guide customers on the best ways to prepare their choices at home. “All of our employees can offer suggestions as to how to prepare our fish,” Hulsey said. “We have an executive chef on staff

at Milton, Jon Beatty, who knows everything there is to know about how to prepare anything in the kitchen. And he loves to talk about it!” At the Johns Creek location is Bryan Wyatt, a former chef and caterer with years of experience who can assist with recipe ideas. For the novice seafood consumer, Hulsey recommends a very light fillet like west coast Dover sole or Petrale sole. “Both are types of flounders and are very mild. It is what I offer when people come in looking for tilapia which I do not sell,” she noted. For the more adventurous consumer, Hulsey said she has access to all varieties of interesting items. “Just let me know what you want and I will do my best to get it for you,” she promised. “As a Southerner the most adventurous thing I have ever sold are steamer clams. We don’t have anything like that down here!” One would think that someone surrounded by seafood all day long would want something different when dining out. Not for Hulsey, noting her life is wall to wall fish – at work, at home and when going out. “Fish, fish and more fish!” Hulsey laughed. “I always eat it.” Looking ahead, Hulsey said she has her hands full with the two markets (“I don’t have any more daughters to help me open another store!” she laughed), but does not rule out another location. “I have five very talented full-time people working for me who make the idea of expansion tempting. So I guess we will just have to wait and see,” she mused. ■ june2017 | northsidewoman.com | 21

amed after the Centaur in Greek mythology, famous for his teaching ability, Chiron is an adorable puppy in a very interesting package. He is part shepherd, with possibly a mix of corgi based on his short legs. Chiron is three months old and currently weighs around 10 pounds. He had a rough start at life with some health conditions, but is now healthy and happy thanks to great medicine and lots of love. He’s working on going to the bathroom outside, but for now is trained on using puppy pads. Like all puppies, Chiron loves to chew so he’ll need a steady supply of chew toys to keep him busy. W

hat a birds-eye view I have had over the past 22 years to watch the evolution of the role of fathers in my preschool. When I first opened my preschool in 1995, it was mostly moms dropping off children and being involved in school activities. Fast forward 22 years and there are many days that we have far more dads than moms dropping off their children, reading to the class, chaperoning field trips, and being actively involved in preparing their child for the school day. We have also seen the change in the roles of dads (in fact both parents) having more freedom in the workplace to be available to their child through flex-time work arrangements and working from home. While mothers tend to be more of a nurturer , a father’s physicality with young children gives a sense of security and emotional strength to a child that they benefit from their entire life. The rough & tumble play and the feeling of a much larger person being comforting instead of threatening gives a child an inner strength and confidence in themselves and the relationships they build. For a daughter, the strength she sees in her father

translates in her connections with males in the future. For a son, a dad’s sensitivity leads to his nurturing nature as an adult. A lot of discussion over “how to raise a man” and the changing role of a father from days of old is heard on talk shows and in psychology books. But from my bird’s eye view, I see nothing but positives from 22 years ago….a win-win for the children and the dads ! “Any man can be a Father, but it takes someone special to be a Dad”…Anne Geddes Happy Father’s Day! ■ june2017 | northsidewoman.com | 23

new business is taking a traditional Eastern relaxation exercise and making things a little funnier and fuzzier. Since opening in April, Cathi Huff, owner of Love GOGA, which is quite literally yoga with goats, has been entertaining clients by combining exercise with nature. “I love what I’m doing,” Huff said. “It’s about having a peaceful time when you come, getting a good workout and enjoying the animals.” Last year, Huff and her family, including husband, Dan, and their children, Sam and Katie, moved into a house at 325 Five Acre Road in Milton. Since then, they transformed it not only to their dream home, but also into a business opportunity. Huff initially wanted her retired race horse, Bronx, to live in the backyard, and from there, Atlantis Dream Farm, where GOGA is held, was born. Since Bronx had to have pasture companions, Huff slowly added animals to the brood. She started with miniature horses, and then started reading about goats. She reached out to a few breeders and eventually ended up bringing home two pygmy goats. A few months later, Huff received a call from a woman with baby goats, and she ended up taking Laila and Kaila, the goats, home with her. Huff’s friends started to ask her if she would be interested in starting a yoga class with goats after they heard of a similar business in Oregon. “I told them I didn’t know if I wanted to do something like that,” Huff said. “I was tired, we just renovated and my child just gradated. But they kept saying we should try it.” After thinking about it, she decided to host a few test classes which ended up selling out. “It was a message to me that maybe there is something out there in this area,” Huff said. “It was more than just goat yoga. It was about embracing the beauty of the area. When you’re sitting there in nature doing yoga with the goats, it’s magical. There’s something Zen about it.” The Zen-like nature of the class only goes so far before participants’

GOGA Owner Cathi Huff holds star performer, Kaila the goat.

senses of humor kick in. The farm’s resident goats are brought in during the classes to partake in the activities by mimicking poses, climbing on participants and occasionally head butting someone. They are able to take away some of the stress from those new to yoga, and they can be encouraging. “It’s funny but can be surprising at the same time,” Huff said. “They love to be with you. It’s a joyful class. If you’re a true yogi, it’s probably not for you. There are a lot of interruptions in a good way.” In addition to classes, GOGA has hosted events like Mother’s Day tea, girls’ night out and a company outing. “I don’t want to do too many of those,” Huff said. “I want to focus on the classes. My brand is goat yoga. It’s what I want to do. I want the people to come and enjoy their time with the goats and experience that.” However, she will continue to hold classes like yoga and meditation, especially since they will be joined soon by a new baby goat. GOGA will host a baby shower for the new addition June 1, and the kid or doeling is expected to join the class. But for now, Huff just wants to see where the program goes. “For me, this was started for fun,” Huff said. “If it ends tomorrow, that’s OK. I have 15, almost 17 pets and have more work than I need. I’m just happy running my farm.” To learn more about GOGA, visit lovegoga.com. ■

Minimally invasive options in gynecologic medicine

T

he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga and Dr. Annie Kim of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day procedures that require no downtime. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fastgrowing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

Retinoids - Your skin’s best friend! By DR. BRENT TAYLOR Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery

M

any fads and buzzwords exist in the skincare industry, and it seems like every celebrity is selling a different skincare line. The truth is that there are relatively few scientifically proven ways to make normal skin healthier and appear younger. Among the few compounds with good supporting evidence for anti-aging effects, retinoids stand out. If you are serious about achieving healthy-looking skin, then you should really understand (and use) retinoids - the bread and butter of most of today’s effective skin care lines. 1. Cousins of Vitamin A Vitamin A is also called retinol and is a vitamin found in vegetables such as sweet potatoes, leafy greens, and bell peppers. Vitamin A is important for growth and development in the womb and is important for eye, skin, bone and reproductive health in adults. Any compound that is similar to retinol is called a “retinoid.” When it comes to youthfulness, retinoic acid is one of the most important retinoids to know about. Retinoic acid affects how your skin cells grow. It helps them mature smoothly without pores becoming clogged. Retinoic acid strongly decreases how oily the skin is and even shrinks oil glands making pores appear smaller. Retinoic acid also appears to have synergy with antioxidants and allows them to more effectively reduce free radical damage, which helps fight the effects of sun damage and photoaging. Collagen, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, elastin… all of these are affected by retinoic acid, allowing significant improvement in the health and beauty of the skin. 2. No Filter Needed Because of their ability to help cells repair themselves and mature naturally, retinoids are great for fighting the formation of new wrinkles and softening existing lines. As retinoids repair the skin, fine lines fade; large oil glands diminish in size, and the skin takes on a more even, smooth tone and texture. Retinoids may also stimulates more blood flow in the skin, giving a healthy rosy glow. Retinoids are one of the key ingredients that dermatologists use for treating acne. Retinoids can help prevent and treat clogged pores (blackheads) and help prevent whiteheads and deeper inflamed acne bumps from forming. As a result, they also help prevent acne scarring. Typically, retinoids are one of the two to four medicines that a dermatologist will prescribe to help a teenager or adult become acne-free. 3. All Good Things To Those Who Wait Because retinol helps unclog pores and prevents dead skin from forming future clogs, continued use of retinol cream can prevent acne, but clear skin does not come overnight. Retinoids affect the way that your skin develops. This is a “bottom up” process, as it can take a skin cell a month to travel from the base of the

skin to the surface as it grows and develops. Before deciding whether your retinoid is working, give it at least a month. Patience is rewarded, as devoted use of a retinoid is repaid after TAYLOR a month or so with clearer, smoother skin. 4. Tricks of the Trade Many people react negatively to retinoids when beginning treatment. Think about what retinoids are doing – they make your skin less oily, and oil is there for a reason. Oil holds in moisture, and some of our skin’s oil may help serve as natural sunscreen. So the key with retinoid use is to find the right amount that smooths lines and makes the skin less oily without causing it to be so oil-free as to be easily dried out or irritated. With most retinoids, the trick is to start low and slow and gradually increase. Typically, a pea-sized amount of a retinoid is applied to the forehead, cheeks and chin every other night and gently rubbed over the skin while taking care to avoid the eyes and lips. After a few weeks, if the skin is not too dry, then the retinoid may be applied every night. More is not necessarily better! If your skin is tolerating the retinoid well after those 4 weeks, you can try applying more retinoid. If the retinoid proves to be too powerful and causes redness and extreme dryness or irritation, back down the dosing and revert back to every other night or every few nights. Luckily, your skin should begin to tolerate it more. Increasing your retinoid regimen should come easier with time. 5. Your Friendly Neighborhood Dermatologist How do you select a retinoid? Adapalene, a weak but good retinoid, is now available over the counter. Stronger retinoids such as tretinoin and tazarotene are available by prescription. Which retinoid is right for you depends on your skin type, how oily your skin is, whether you suffer from acne, and whether you are prone to eczema or dry skin. Your dermatologist can help you select the retinoid that is right for you. 6. It’s Not An Option if You Are or May Become Pregnant (Or Are Breastfeeding) Women of child bearing age who are pregnant, breastfeeding or may become pregnant beware! Retinoids should be avoided during pregnancy. In fact, the weaker retinol is often found in over the counter beauty products with titles claiming “Anti Aging” or “Wrinkle Prevent” or “Dark Spot Corrector.” Definitive proof exists for the correlation of serious birth defects with the consumption of oral retinoids during pregnancy. Although it is unknown whether or to what extent topical retinoids pose to an unborn fetus, it is my recommendation to avoid all retinoids during pregnancy and breastfeeding and stick to non-medicated cosmetics and a prenatal vitamin. ■

OTOX® is Now Available in our dental office for TMJ Pain, Headaches. You may not have heard about Botox therapy for head, neck, and/or facial pain. The same effect of Botox that reduces the appearance of wrinkles (relaxing muscles) is used to reduce the intensity of muscle contractions. Intense and/or prolonged muscle contractions of our muscles used for chewing can cause pain and damage to our teeth. Pain can be in the contracted muscle or can be referred to a distant site. Severe clenching and grinding of the teeth can cause the teeth to chip, break, or even need root canal treatments. How Does BOTOX® Treat Jaw Tension and TMJ Disorder? Botox is injected into the masseter muscles of the jaw to treat TMJ, an inflammation of the TMJ joint in the jaw. Located on both sides of the head at the point where the jawbone meets the skull, the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) is used during talking, eating, swallowing, and other everyday activities. If this joint becomes displaced or is overworked through excessive teeth grinding, a person may suffer severe tension headaches, as well as sharp pain in the jaw. BOTOX® relieves jaw tension by making muscles unable to engage in the powerful, often unconscious movement of the jaw that produces headaches and pain. The BOTOX® alternative treatment for TMJ disorders and jaw tension is

usually quick, straightforward, and effective. A non-surgical procedure, BOTOX® injections are administered in a doctor’s office and treatment requires no hospital stay. Most patients experience noticeable improvement within one or two days of their first treatment, although relief can take up to a week. Botox For Neck Pain, Migraine and Tension Headaches? Recently, Botox has become a tool to help relieve migraine headaches and associated neck muscle pain. It has proven to be very effective in pain relief from muscle sources. It is important to distinguish the source of pain since Botox works on muscles. This mechanism is why Botox reduces wrinkles! Botox can be used in differentiation of pain source. If it does not give some relief, the source of pain is probably not the muscles. Many patients seeking Botox treatment for wrinkle reduction report elimination or reduction of migraine headaches as an added bonus. In as little as one visit, we can also erase lines and wrinkles from around the mouth, and erase those pesky crows feet and stress lines on the forehead giving you a more youthful appearance! Please call 770-884-6623 now to schedule your complimentary no obligation consultation appointment to find out more and see if this is right for you. The Mystery of Sundowner's Syndrome By SUE MCCORMICK Synergy Homecare

W

hile the cause and cure are unknown, there is hope. Just like everyone is different, there are also different forms and symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease. One of the most difficult for loved ones to witness is Sundowner’s Syndrome. The name is a reflection of the confusion symptoms that appear or get worse during the transition between daylight and darkness, either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Your loved one may exhibit one or more of these symptoms: rapid mood swings, anger, crying, agitation, pacing, fear, depression, stubbornness, restlessness, and rocking. The more severe symptoms of sundowners syndrome include: hallucinations, hiding things, paranoia, violence, and wandering. In the case of potential wandering, it may be a good idea to have your loved one wear an identification bracelet and install a top door lock to keep them safe during unsupervised sleeping hours. The reason for the timeliness of this disease is a medical mystery. Some doctors believe it could be triggered by a days worth of sensory stimulation or caused by a change of hormones the night brings. Some even think it could be caused by the darkness and the feeling of not being able to see as well after the sun goes down. While there is no cure for this, there are some ways it can be made more manageable: • Let light in Light isn’t only assumed to help reduce the symptoms, but it is also proven to prevent depression. Keep rooms well lit and at bedtime, plug in a night light. • Control noise

As you start to wind down after a long day, keep the TV, radio and other noisy distractions at a low volume. You don’t want your loved one to end a day full of McCormick stimulation with more stimulation. • Establish a routine Routines may help your loved one feel safe and secure by reducing the level of anxiety he or she feels. Also, keep the busier activities to the morning/afternoon. • Watch the diet Focus on feeding your loved one “brain healthy” food, as suggested in the MIND diet. Have them avoid eating or drinking anything with too much caffeine or sugar – especially later in the day or evening. Many professional caregivers are experienced with the range of symptoms associated with Sundowner’s Syndrome and are trained to deal with them appropriately. If your loved one is suffering from Sundowner’s Syndrome, Call Us to learn more about how a Synergy caregiver looking after your loved one during those restless hours can make life easier for all involved. When is the best time to get braces? By DR. JEFFREY JORDAN Jordan Orthodontics

O

rthodontic treatment today is about faces not just braces. Consequently, facial esthetics dictates the proper timing for treatment. While treatment can contribute to the physical and psychological development of patients young JORDAN and old, some patients require early intervention. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial visit to an orthodontist at age 7 for this reason. Most patients do not need early treatment, but if necessary, amazing improvements in facial esthetics and function can be accomplished. The common orthodontic problems that can be treated in between 7 and 9 years old include underbites and severe overbites as well as patients with crossbites and openbites. These conditions are considered muscular skeletal problems and are best addressed in the mixed dentition when the permanent front teeth are erupting. These treatments are referred to as dentofacial orthopedics because we are working with the bones of the face and not just the teeth. The majority of patients benefit from a single treatment during adolescence, as the last few primary teeth are lost and the second molars erupt. The exact age varies, but most patients are treated during the middle school years and can be completed by high school. Of course, sometimes the teeth are slow to erupt and this

34 | northsidewoman.com | june2017

can delay the completion of treatment. For this reason, starting treatment too early can prolong treatment duration and result in orthodontic burnout for the patients. Patient cooperation is important in keeping the treatments short in duration and efficient. Interestingly, girl’s teeth erupt earlier than boys of the same age. Teenagers are usually in a rapid growth phase during this period. As a result, dramatic results can be achieved with improved facial esthetics and function. For example, the smile can be made wider, the lower jaw can be advanced, or a gummy smile can be eliminated. A smile analysis dictates in what direction the teeth and jaws should be moved. These changes can be life altering for some patients during the teen years. Of course, adults want to look good too, and orthodontic treatment for adults is more popular than ever! Invisalign, clear braces, and improvements in surgical techniques make having a fantastic smile easier too. The bulky braces and heavy forces of yesteryear are a thing of the past. Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that move the teeth. Each aligner moves the teeth a quarter of a millimeter and is worn for about two weeks. The number of aligners is dictated by how crowded or spaced out your teeth are at the beginning. Clear or ceramic braces combined with new superelastic memory wires have made traditional orthodontic treatment more esthetic and more efficient

and comfortable . The teeth move a little every day and the forces on the teeth are very light. For more dramatic changes, orthognathic surgery can totally transform ones appearance if necessary. Adults who desire improved facial esthetics can benefit from orthodontics combined with surgery to correct facial imbalances. In this situation, the braces are placed on the teeth for about six months prior to surgery and remain on the teeth for a few months after the procedure. So the best time to get treatment is when you or your child is ready to improve that smile! It’s about faces not just braces. â–

The link between my oral health and my overall health? By DAVID REMALEY

DDS ROSWELL DENTAL CARE

T

he Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health states that good oral health is essential to good general health. And specifically for women, a growing body of research has linked gum disease to a variety of health problems that affect women. Because gum disease is a bacterial infection, it can enter the bloodstream and may be a factor in causing other health complications: • Heart disease: People with gum disease may be more at risk for heart disease and have nearly twice the risk of having a fatal heart attack. Heart disease is also the number one killer of American women.1 • Stroke: One study found a casual relationship of oral infections as a risk factor for stroke.2 • Diabetes: People with diabetes are more likely to have gum disease and may make it more difficult for diabetics to control their blood sugar. Gum disease may also be a risk factor for diabetes, even in otherwise healthy indviduals.3 • Respiratory problems: Bacteria that grow in the oral cavity can travel to the lungs causing respiratory disease such as pneumonia - especially in people with gum disease.4 • Pregnancy outcomes: Pregnant women who have gum disease may be more likely to have a baby born too early or too small. Gum disease may also trigger increased levels of biological fluids that induce labor.4 Because gum disease is usually painless, many women may not even realize they have it until it reaches an advanced state. Your best defense is to brush and floss daily and see your dentist regularly. How do My Oral Health Needs Change Throughout My Life? Women have special oral health requirements during the unique phases in their lives. Changes in female hormone levels during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause exaggerate the way gums react to plaque. So at these times, women need to be especially thorough when brushing and flossing every day in order to prevent gum disease. Other important information you should know: • Menstruation — some women find that their gums swell and bleed prior

to their periods, while others experience cold sores or canker sores. These symptoms usually go away once your period starts. • Oral REMALEY contraceptives — inflamed gums are one of the most common side effects. • Pregnancy — studies show many pregnant women experience pregnancy gingivitis, when dental plaque builds up on the teeth and irritates the gums. Symptoms include red, inflamed and bleeding gums. Prenatal care is especially important. • Menopause — oral symptoms experienced during this stage of a women's life include red or inflamed gums, oral pain and discomfort, burning sensations, altered taste sensations and dry mouth. • Osteoporosis — a number of studies have suggested a link between osteoporosis and bone loss in the jaw. Researchers suggest this may lead to tooth loss because the density of the bone that supports teeth may be decreased. When combined with gum disease, osteoporosis speeds up the process of bone loss around the teeth. Your mouth is the gateway to your body and is directly related to all systemic problems. Maintaining good oral health habits now is especially important because unhealthy bacteria in the mouth not only can harm your teeth and gums but may be associated with serious medical conditions. Research has shown that infections in the mouth may be associated with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia and other health problems that are common in older adults. It really only takes a few simple steps, including brushing and flossing at least twice daily, visiting your dentist regularly and eating a healthy diet.
