Summer Safety Tips for Seniors! Jeana Fortenberry Roswell Senior Living There’s no doubt that summer is here and it can be a great time for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors with family and friends. However, it can also be hazardous if you don’t take the proper precautions to be safe. Your body works hard every day to maintain a normal temperature balance. Extreme heat weakens your body and causes it to work harder than normal. In essence, the heat forces your body to work beyond its limits which is often the starting place for heat related illness. For senior citizens, that can be a dangerous—and even deadly—crisis. Normally, heat related illnesses are a direct consequence of extended exposure to the sun. These may include simple sunburns, heat exhaustion and sometimes even heat stroke. There are several ways to combat these illnesses.
Here are some of the easiest ways to stay safe from the heat this summer: • • • • • • • • •
Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water and liquids. Apply sunscreen when outside for a long period of time. Wear a hat to reduce sun contact to the face and neck. Limit strenuous activities. Take breaks to cool down by resting in a shaded area. Wear light clothing. Prepare easy and light meals. Keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Check on family and friends.
If you would like information about keeping safe this summer, please contact Jeana Fortenberry at Roswell Senior Living, 770-609-4429. Or visit us on the internet at www.pacificaroswell.com.

Jim is making this difference by assisting veterans, their spouses, veterans’ widows and adult children of veterans and widows who assist their parents with long term care decisions in obtaining a misunderstood and under utilized long term care benefit from the VA, known as IMPROVED PENSION. What is the IMPROVED PENSION benefit? Available to a veteran or a widow of a veteran, its a monthly monetary benefit for those who have 1) served at least one day during a qualified war period, 2) served ninety consecutive days of active service 3) were discharged with a general or better than dishonorable discharge and 4) meet certain medical and financial criteria. Safety Tips for Seniors in Extreme Heat Zee Jennings Executive Director Gardens of Roswell With the recent heat index soaring over 90 degrees in the next few weeks, seniors over are at higher risk to suffer the dangerous effects of extreme heat, even if they are healthy and active people. The sense of physical well-being is never an absolute guarantee against the effects of high temperatures. Minimal to moderate hydration in older persons can contribute to increase the risk of suffering a profound dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Additionally, the brains of the older population often do not accurately
perceive changes in temperature. Chronic medical conditions may change the body’s perception of temperature and some prescription medication may impair the body’s ability to absorb fluids, inhibit perspiration and create extreme sensitivity to the sun. Check with your physician for potential side effects of prescribed medication. According to a federal study, 40% of the heat-related deaths occur among people in 65 years and older population. Seniors should take care to avoid outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day noon-4pm, drink frequent cool non-alcoholic beverages, avoid heavy meals before go-
ing outdoors as well as wear light weight, light colored clothing and a hat. Be aware of the warning signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke including red, dry, hot skin with no sweating; rapid strong pulse; throbbing headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or confusion. In the event you suspect a heat related crisis; immediately contact emergency services, move to a shady area or indoors immediately, douse the person with cool water by any means available-water hose, shower, wrap up in cool damp sheet and offer sips of cool non-alcoholic beverage. You can still enjoy the lazy days of summer with a few simple precautions!
