Never Too Young to ShareHope Cumming teenager raises over $25,000 for victims of sexual abuse
By KATIE VANBRACKLE

W
hen the scandalous news story involving child molestation charges against Pennsylvania State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky broke in 2011, word traveled fast among Nittany Lions fans. Charles and Tonya Hirsch, both Penn State alums, decided to be up front and honest with their two young children, Kelsey and Devon, wanting the kids to hear the news from their parents, rather than a distorted version from their peers. Though many 12-year-old girls may have recoiled from such a sensitive subject as child molestation, Kelsey immediately felt a call to action. “I just remember feeling that I wanted to help the victims somehow because they were probably feeling a lot of pain. It’s not okay to do something like that to someone and I wanted to make a difference and help out,” she recalled. As a service project connected to her bat mitzvah, a Jewish religious initiation ceremony for girls, Kelsey chose to help victims of sexual abuse by raising funds for the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN). RAINN is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization which operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800-656-HOPE) in partnership with more than 1,100 local rape crisis centers across the country and operates the DoD Safe Helpline for the Department

of Defense. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice. Kelsey’s parents purchased 200 bright blue wristbands with the printed words “Hope-Courage-Strength.” The plan was to sell the bands to friends and neighbors for $3 each and try to raise $600 for RAINN. “At first we were going around my local area where I used to live in Pennsylvania, selling them door-to-door, but eventually we got permission to sell them at Gate A at the Blue & White game at Penn State,” said Kelsey. For those who may not be Nittany Lions fans, the Blue & White game is Penn State’s annual spring football scrimmage. Charles said the popular game regularly attracts crowds of up to 80,000. “Kelsey was able to connect with the athletic department and they set up her up with some volunteers and we brought in more volunteers and we all sat at the student gate and took donations and gave out bands,” he said. Kelsey raised over $2,000 at that game alone. Soon after, RAINN set up a Bands4RAINN page for Kelsey on their RAINNmakers fundraising website. Since then, sales of the bands from that webpage have brought in more than $25,000. RAINN honored Kelsey in 2012 by making her the first non-celebrity to

In 2013, Kelsey received Prudential’s Spirit of Community Award, and in July of 2014, Kohl’s Department Stores awarded Kelsey a $1,000 scholarship for outstanding community service. Kula Project, Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee House team up to support small-scale farmers in Rwanda By KATIE VANBRACKLE
katie@northsidewoman.com
O
n Thursday, Aug. 14, Kula Project, a local nonprofit focused on creating sustainable farming communities in developing nations will host the second annual #FORTHEFARMER campaign in partnership with several of the Atlanta area’s top restaurants. Each participating restaurant will donate 20 percent of sales from the evening to be invested in smallscale farmers in Rwanda, allowing local residents to make a global impact by benefitting Kula Project’s ongoing efforts beyond our own borders. Kula means “to eat” in Swahili, and there is no better way to unite with Kula Project’s cause than at the dinner table. Roswell area restaurants participating include: 1920 Tavern at Opulent, Table & Main, Etris Kitchen & Bar, Foundation Social Eatery, Osteria Mattone, Real Fix Pizzeria, Salt Factory and Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee House. Atlanta restaurants include Buttermilk Kitchen, Harbor Bar and Fishhouse, Max’s Wine Dive, Murphy’s, Serpas True Food and The Optimist. Each restaurant will be paired with an individual farmer’s story and diners will get to see the direct impact their contribution will make through photos and more. Early reservations are encouraged. “For 11 million people in Rwanda, life starts on the farm. Children attend school, families have food to eat and medicine they can afford when the family farm is successful,” said Kula Project founder and native Atlantan Sarah Buchanan. “We, as a city, have a unique opportunity to be a part of Rwanda’s success stories, if we choose to act.”
Since its founding in 2012, Kula Project has been building communities by investing in small farmers around the globe, allowing them access to healthy seeds and fair trade buyers and helping them end poverty for their families and generations to come. Currently, their work is focused in Rwanda with coffee farmers, helping genocide survivors establish sustainable and profitable farms. In 2005, Roswell resident and Anglican priest Jonathan Golden also felt compelled to help survivors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in which close to one million ethnic Tutsi and moderate Hutu sympathizers lost their lives to the hands of extremist Hutu militia. Golden founded a coffee company that pays fair wages to the farmers of Rwanda, helps them with basic needs and brings a quality product to coffee lovers. Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee Company’s website states that “the introduction of specialty coffee to the healing fields of Rwanda proved to be an uncommon opportunity for once warring countrymen to not only rebuild their homesteads, but to work together toward lasting peace.” Land of a Thousand Hills licenses their coffee for sale by cafes and churches all over the country, but owns only one coffee shop as a company – the Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee Shop located in Roswell at 352 South Atlanta St. Coffee shop manager Jono Moehlig recently returned from three weeks in Rwanda, visiting with coffee farmers and inspecting Land of a Thousand Hills’ coffee washing station.

4 “A washing station is part of the coffee processing method. Once the coffee ‘cherries’ have been picked from the tree, the pulp is washed away, separating out the beans for further processing,” Moehlig explained. “Many farmers in Rwanda know that we pay above fair trade price and have good relationships with our partners, so they will bypass two other washing stations to get to us. As a result, other stations have raised their prices as well, which helps competition in the area.” Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee Shop will participate in Kula Project’s #FORTHEFARMER dining night on Aug. 14, but local residents wishing to “Drink Coffee, Do Good” on any given day of the week, can visit the Roswell location for coffee, pastries and light fare such as wraps, quiche and croissants. To learn more about Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee, visit drinkcoffeedogoodroswell.com. For the Kula Project, visit KulaProject.org. ■ 1. The nation’s largest independent book festival is in your own backyard! Previewing the 2014 AJC Decatur Book Festival: Aug. 29-31 By KATIE VANBRACKLE
katie@northsidewoman.com
O
ver Labor Day weekend, tens of thousands of book lovers from metro Atlanta and beyond will stroll the historic downtown Decatur square, mingling with world-class authors, illustrators, editors, publishers, booksellers and artists for a weekend filled with literature, music, food, art and fun. The ninth annual AJC Decatur Book Festival (DBF) will feature events and presentations suited for all ages and interests and signings by more than 300 national and local authors, including award-winning and bestselling authors representing all genres of books. Full details can be found at decaturbookfestival.com. Local book clubs may want to consider reading a book written by one of the many authors scheduled to appear at the DBF, then taking a group field trip to hear the author speak. Some suggestions include:
Blonde
BY JOYCE CAROL OATES Famed American literary icon Joyce Carol Oates will deliver the DBF’s keynote address on Friday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at Emory University. In the National Book Award-nominated bestseller “Blonde,” Oates boldly re-imagines one of America’s most enduring icons. The legend of Marilyn Monroe – aka Norma Jeane Baker – comes provocatively alive in this powerful tale of Hollywood myth and heartbreaking reality.
Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War
BY KAREN ABBOTT 2014 marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Atlanta, when the city of Atlanta fell to Union forces, and Sherman began his infamous March to the Sea. The DBF will feature several Civil War-themed works, including a new book by New York Times bestselling author Karen Abbott, “Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy.” This fascinating historical account comprises the stories of four courageous women—a socialite, a farm girl, an abolitionist and a widow—who all were spies during the Civil War. A nonfiction read that cements her role as a “pioneer of sizzle history,” Abbott’s “Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy” illuminates the saucier secrets of the Civil War using primary source materials and interviews with the spies’ descendants.
Redshirts
BY JOHN SCALZI The DBF calls John Scalzi one of the most popular and acclaimed science fiction authors to emerge in the past decade. His New York Times bestsellers include “Redshirts,” which also won 2013’s Hugo Award for Best Novel. Ensign Andrew Dahl is thrilled to be assigned to a prestigious posting on the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the fact that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; and (2) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed. Then Andrew stumbles on information that completely transforms his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the starship Intrepid really is…and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives.
The Cove
We Were the Mulvaneys
BY JOYCE CAROL OATES In “We Were the Mulvaneys,” an Oprah Book Club choice, Oates follows the disintegration of an American family in the late 20th century. The Mulvaneys of High Point Farm in New York are a large and fortunate clan, blessed with good looks, abundant charisma and boundless promise. But over the course of 25 years, the Mulvaneys will slide into a scattered collection of lost and lonely souls, each enduring some form of exile – physical or spiritual. In the end, they find a way to bridge the chasms that have opened among them, reuniting in the spirit of love and healing. 10 | northsidewoman.com | august2014
BY RON RASH Pat Conroy personally selected several authors to appear with him in the DBF’s Pat Conroy Track, including John Lang and Ron Rash who will discuss Lang’s new biography of Rash, “Understanding Ron Rash.” Rash, New York Times bestselling author of novels such as “The Cove,” will give the keynote address at the DBF’s Writer’s Conference on Friday. Deep in the rugged Appalachians of North Carolina lies the cove, a dark, forbidding place where spirits and fetches wander, and even the light fears to travel. Or so the townsfolk of Mars Hill believe – just as they know that Laurel Shelton, the lonely young woman who lives within its shadows, is a witch. Alone except for her brother Hank, newly returned from the trenches of World War I in France, Laurel’s path soon crosses that of a mute, fluteplaying stranger who brings her happiness but also harbors a secret that could destroy everything. ■

Madame President Ladies take the helm of three area Rotary Clubs
T
hree women were recently named president of their local Rotary Clubs. In June, Cindy Ringwall took the helm of the newly re-named MiltonWindward Rotary Club, which meets at St. Aidan’s Church in Milton each Monday at noon. Ringwall, who formerly served in the United States Navy, is an involved Milton resident and small business owner with her husband, Eric. She is the mother of two college-age ROTC students. Women comprise almost half of the membership of the Milton-Windward Rotary Club. The club changed its name to reflect a commitment to establishing deep roots in the Milton community through service projects with the new Milton Library and Milton Senior Center in addition to ongoing support of North Fulton Community Charities, YMCA
and Habitat for Humanity, among others. The Rotary Club of Johns Creek – North Fulton inducted Bev Miller as their club president on July 9. Miller, director of community affairs at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, is a charter member of the club, which meets on Wednesdays at the Atlanta Athletic Club. “I’m proud of what our club has accomplished since chartering last year,” said Miller. “Our priority is to serve the Johns Creek community and I’m looking forward to continuing that mission this year. We have some great service projects and events planned in the coming months.” The Rotary Club of Alpharetta also inducted Karen Nolan to serve as its President. 10th Annual Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’ on August 24 to support homeless women and children in North Fulton By KATIE VANBRACKLE
katie@northsidewoman.com
I
t’s hard to think of a better way to spend a hot, late August afternoon than relaxing under a tall shady tree with a large, dripping ice cream cone in hand. Add in the fun of spending the day with friends and neighbors, and the satisfying knowledge that your ice cream splurge is helping to support homeless single mothers and their children, and you have the perfect picture of what Miss
Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’ is all about. “Starting out as a small ice cream social, Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’ has become THE ice cream event of the year for metro Atlanta,” stated Kathy Swahn, Executive Director at the Drake House. The event brings together local civic, faith and business groups for an old fashioned ice cream social on the shady lawn of the Historic Roswell Town Square. Volunteer “crankers” work hard to create over 100 flavors of homemade ice cream, with celebrity judges
Mary Drake, right, for whom the Drake House is named, served as a judge at the very first Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’ in 2005.
awarding prizes for the best flavors. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Ice Cream Crankin’ with the rain or shine event scheduled for Sunday, August 24th from 2 to 4 p.m., featuring live music, contests, and children’s activities. Christy Merritt, Director of Programs for the Drake House, says her favorite part of the event is the ice cream eating (no spoons allowed!) and stacking contests for the kids.

▼ TO DO, Continued from Page 14 “It is so fun to see the kids’ sticky, happy faces,” she said, adding that the Drake House could not provide the needed level of service to families in need without the help of “this incredibly generous community.” The Drake House is a 16-unit apartment complex founded in 2004 to fill an unmet need in North Fulton for shortterm crisis housing, support, education and empowerment for homeless single mothers and their children. Since 2006, the non-profit has served 307 families with over 560 children originating from Sandy Spring, Roswell, Johns Creek, Alpharetta and Milton. Despite the presumed affluence of the area, the Drake House stays close to or at capacity all year long. The Drake House was named for the late Mary Drake, a tireless advocate
for people in need in Roswell, called by some “the heart and soul of North Fulton County, or certainly its conscience.” The Ice Cream Crankin’ provides a much needed revenue stream for the Drake House, which depends on financial and volunteer support from the community. This year’s attendance is expected to exceed 3,200 with a financial goal of $50,000. The Drake House’s residents, past and present, will be on hand to join in the ice cream fun. “Each year we invite all of the Drake House’s resident families and graduate families to come to Miss Mary’s and enjoy the day,” said Merritt. “It’s like a family reunion to see how much the kids have grown and to reconnect with our alumni.” For information on sponsorship, ticket sales or to be involved as a Crankin’ Team, please see the event website at www. missmarysicecream.org or contact Karen Pye at kpye@thedrakehouse.org. ■

s a health and wellness fanatic, I spend a lot of time scouring articles and studies about the latest trends, sometimes I even try them, but most of the time, I don’t. Why not? Because a trend, by definition is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. Remember the egg trend? Eggs are bad. No, wait, only the yolk is bad, the white is good. No, wait, we’re wrong, eggs in moderation are okay and even have health benefits. What’s the truth? Who knows, because it’s constantly changing. The latest trend for perfect health is apple cider vinegar. Just two tablespoons of this wonder liquid, twice a day, can ease digestion, cure or prevent cancer, and keep the body younger. While there is some scientific backing to the benefits of apple cider vinegar, the studies have only been on small groups of people, less than 20, oh, and on rats, too. I don’t know about you, but for me, I’d prefer to see a larger human study before I drink that stuff. Have you tasted it? No amount of Stevia can make that taste good. It’s vinegar. It’s what our grandmother’s used to clean their private areas, which by the way was studied and shown to cause vaginal infections, but then later, shown that it 18 | northsidewoman.com | august2014
didn’t. See what I mean? Clinical studies are often sponsored by companies looking to sell products, and therefore, are biased, which unfortunately adds another piece to the already confusing puzzle. So what can we do? Should we eat the egg and drink the vinegar? Honestly, I can’t answer that for anyone but myself. Decisions like these should be well researched, and discussed with your physician It’s possible a current health condition could benefit from one of the current trends, but it’s also possible it could negatively impact one, too. So before you order that bottle of the miracle weight loss Acai berry, talk to your physician about your personal health history as well as your parent’s and grandparent’s histories, too. They may have access to information we don’t, and are better equipped to consider the entire scope of our health than us. Trust me, you don’t want to drink that apple cider vinegar if you don’t have to. ■

Poolside to tableside Multi-functional pieces for summer style on the go
By LORI WYNNE
S
ummer vacations are a break from normal routines and familiar scenery. If you are like me, vacations aren’t necessarily lazy and restful, since there is so much to do and see in your new surroundings. Taking a brisk sunrise walk leads to breakfast, which becomes a poolside conversation and fun. Suddenly, it’s lunchtime and everyone is talking about going shopping – and you are still in your workout tank and shorts from the early morning exercise. Instead of throwing fashion and looking your best out the window, here are some ideas of how to look great and be ready in a minute’s notice for the next phase of fun or new adventure. Use multi-functional pieces. Clothing items that can serve a couple of different functions by just adding the right accessories,

Georgia Mustangs fast pitch softball players learn the importance of giving back to their community
By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
I
n the sports-crazed world of metro Atlanta, the Georgia Mustangs fastpitch softball organization has made giant strides since its founding five years ago. Beginning as a “light travel” team for girls looking for an opportunity beyond traditional recreational teams, the program now has five teams from ages 10 to 16 playing at the highest levels of girls’ softball. Coach Donna Allen, whose daughter plays with the Georgia Mustangs, says the organization gives female youths in the area an opportunity to improve their athletic skills and build their self-esteem.
The Mustangs recently added three new female coaches, all of whom played softball at the college level. “We felt it was important for the girls to have good female role models and see what they can accomplish if they work hard and have a goal,” said Allen. The Georgia Mustangs 16U team is coached by longtime softball coach Tim Todd, assisted by his daughter, Holly, who played softball for Milton High School and Berry College and returned to lend a hand in coaching duties. “Softball is not my full-time job, although it seems like it,” laughed Holly. “I balance nursing school, softball practice, tournaments, softball lessons and a patient care technician job I recently accepted for

a local hospital.” But time management and commitment to task is a responsibility Holly and her dad require not only of themselves, but of the players selected to play for the Georgia Mustangs. “Fastpitch softball in Georgia is very competitive, so many of our girls are committed [to becoming better by] working out, practicing pitching or hitting nearly every day on their own when they
are not practicing with the team,” said Holly. The dedication has paid off, with Georgia Mustangs teams routinely placing among the top girls’ softball teams in the area. In addition, the girls are asked to serve on committees in leadership roles to assist with their team’s public relations,

orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on the staples and fads.
The color BLUE
B
lue has made a very strong come back! It can be found as the color of choice for many rooms of the home; family rooms, formal living rooms, bedrooms, and more. Whether it being the furniture, walls, rugs or accessories BLUE is beautiful! Blue produces a calming atmosphere and is particularly suited for rooms in which you wish to relax. Blue rooms have even been shown to reduce the heart rate proving its soothing qualities. Blue works great with many other colors as well such as white, shades of green, reds, and gold/ yellows. Blue gives any room a very fresh look and is always a classic color. ■ Joy Howell brings 23 years of home decorating experience to HFI. NEW CABINETS OR NOT?
U
pdating kitchens doesn’t mean you have to gut it anymore! Today’s market offers alternatives which will not only reduce your costs and household interruption but still dramatically change the look. Many homes have healthy cabinets that don’t need replacement. Why don’t you paint your cabinet frames, add a new door style, change out your hardware and… Voila…. you have a new kitchen! Painting is an excellent alternative and, when done properly, it will provide dramatic change, great durability and long lasting beauty. Successful painters focus on the three components: products, process and technique. Check this when hiring a painter to ensure quality for your home. Bottom line? A simple facelift might be all your kitchen needs for that new look without the expense and interruption to your home life. ■ Mary Jo Alton, Owner, SnappyKitchens.com/showroom/snappy-kitchens-atlanta 2612 Holcomb Bridge Rd, Ste 110, Alpharetta, GA 30022 470-268-7787
Simply Elegant
N
othing says fresh, clean, sophisticated and elegant like a neutral color palette. This is best described as a monochromatic or tone on tone. The key to achieving the feel you want in your space with a neutral palette is creating visual interest in your choice of furnishings. Combine fabrics with textures, patterns and different sheens for your soft goods. You can use soft goods such as window treatments, pillows and bedding. The use of mixed finishes in your mirrors, lighting fixtures and accessories are a nice added interest. Also, consider adding metal pieces in a piece of canvas art and a sculptured piece for a free standing accessory. Accent pillows and rugs also give a space a great feeling of layering and depth. These are also elements that can be changed out to give a new and fresh look without making major changes to your entire decor. In order to keep a neutral palette from looking sterile be sure to add some richness. Feel free to add life to your space through the use of a dark element in either your wood tones or metal, even if it’s only in a great picture frame. And as always fresh flowers and greenery add/ or a great sense of warmth to a room. ■ Cindy McClanahan Lear is an Interior Designer for the full service design center, Tuscany Fine Furnishings 1570 Holcomb Bridge Rd. in Roswell, tuscanyfinefurnishings.com, 770-993-0640 open Mon-Sat 10-6 p.m. Sun. 1-5 p.m. august2014 | northsidewoman.com | 27

▼ GIRL POWER, Continued from Page 26 website, Facebook page and fundraising, giving the players a sense of accomplishment and pride for their organization. Giving back to the community is also stressed, with many players participating in various local 5K races for charity and working on projects to improve the condition of their own playing fields and facilities. In June, the 14U team won the ASA U16 Breast Cancer Invitational travel tournament in Chatsworth. The team won five of seven en route to the title, including a nohitter by Kelly Bostwick and a two-hitter by Ashley Shore in the 9-0 championship game. Holly said no trophies were handed out for the champions. Instead, the proceeds were donated to the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund. “Our teams wanted to participate in a tournament where they could give something back to the community,”
said Holly. “[We] played in support of a player whose mom had breast cancer. Parents donated pink jerseys and put the mother’s initials on the pink ribbon.” Amy Smith, whose daughter Lindsey played on the 14U team, said, “What a wonderful lesson and gift for the girls to be a part of – to know their earned competitive win on the field will help women in their battle off the field.” Playing in tournaments with a charity focus is important to the players, said Holly. Plans are already in the works to hold a round robin tournament where canned goods will be collected instead of a gate fee. As the daughter of a softball coach, a player for most of her life and now working with the next generation of softball players, Holly says she has seen the benefits of softball in the development of girls at every level. “Players learn friendship, teamwork, along with organization and time management,” said Holly. “Leadership is another skill [since] every team needs people to step up at any moment to push the team forward or lead them through tough situations. I love the team aspect of softball.” ■

Five tips for getting your diet back on track
K
olleen Riddick, owner of Core Physique in Milton, says people come to her gym wanting to look and feel better. While regular exercise certainly helps, Riddick says the key to to looking your best is to take firm control of your diet--something that can be even more challenging than a new workout routine. “Eighty percent of the way you look is the way you eat,” said Riddick. “Eating is an emotional thing. Working out makes you feel better and have more energy, but until you get your eating under control, you are missing the big picture.” Here, she offers five tips for getting your diet back on track.
1. Stay hydrated Riddick says you don’t need sports drinks full of chemicals and sugar to replenish your body’s electrolytes during or after a workout. She prefers plain coconut water or Emergen-C, a vitamin supplement drink mix.
2. Slash your sugar intake To help clients see how much sugar they ingest in a single day, Riddick has them measure out one teaspoon of sugar into a bag for every 4 grams of sugar in their daily diet. The results can be shocking for adults or kids who have no idea how quickly those sugar grams can add up.
3. Eat healthier snacks When Riddick gets hungry in the afternoon, she reaches for low-sugar Greek yogurt, unsalted almonds or carrot sticks. Be aware of the sugar content of granola bars or energy bars, she warns.

4. Cut your carbs
Limit your carbs as much as you can, even whole grains, suggests Riddick, noting that your body will burn the carb source in your body instead of the visceral fat around your middle, which leads to heart disease and diabetes. In a lowcarb diet, your body will be forced to use the fat instead as an energy source.
5. Eat clean
If it comes in a package, it’s best to avoid it, says Riddick, and if something has more than three ingredients, think twice. “It always surprises me how few people understand this, and even fewer choose to live it,” she said. ■

The patch portion seals the inner liner of the tire and the patch stem seals the puncture. This would now be considered a permanent repair. The cost for an internal tire repair will always be greater than a tire plug, but you will have the peace of mind that both the tire and the repair are sound. The next time you visit your favorite Wood & Fullerton Goodyear location, take a look at the large glass jar on the counter. he question comes up from time to time regarding the difference between a tire plug and a tire patch. First, let’s look at the obvious difference. A tire plug is inserted from the outside of the tire into the puncture to seal the air loss. This can be done very quickly without demounting the tire. A major drawback to this is it is impossible to inspect the inside of the tire to determine if there is structural damage from driving on the tire with low pressure. A tire with internal damage would be very apparent once the tire is dismounted from the rim. Any tire with internal structural damage should be replaced, not repaired. The tire technician will also determine the area on the tire that is damaged. Judson’sHole in One Golf tournament, leadership workshop inspire collegiate women
T
he Judson Collegiate and Legends ProAm Challenge was held in June, pairing female collegiate golfers with former stars of the LPGA for a golf tournament at Country Club of Roswell. Roswell High School graduate Jessica Haigwood, now a freshman at Georgia Regents University in Augusta, earned a second day score of 66 to secure a well-earned Pro-Am victory, while Barb Moxness of Minnesota earned her second career win on the Legends Tour. A Judson Women’s Leadership Workshop was also held during the weekend, with the goal of providing insight and tools for success to young women entering or already in the
workforce. Organized by the JCI Foundation, the workshop was held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Roswell with 330 in attendance. Speakers included Hala Moddelmog, first female president of the Metro Atlanta Chamber; Becky Blalock, former senior vice president and chief information officer, Southern Company; Stefanie Miller, Coca Cola Group vice president, Karen Kaplan, chief executive officer of Hill Holiday Advertising; as well as several key figures in women’s professional sports. Emcee for the event was radio personality Madison James of B98.5 FM. “We were standing room only and really hit our mark with great speakers that the audience
3 could identify with and were inspired by,” said JCI Foundation Executive Director Jackie Cannizzo. “This program has significance and relevance in our community.” To learn more, visit judsongolf.com. ■ ALL PHOTOS BY: KATE AWTREY

with thunderstorm phobia may choose to hide or seek us out and sit or lay close to us. Panting and trembling are also common signs that your pet may exhibit. Luckily, there are ways to help our pets cope with this phobia. The thunder shirt has become a popular tool used in dogs with thunderstorm phobia. When wearing the thunder shirt, pets that respond to it become distracted. This, in turn, takes their mind off of the thunderstorm and may reduce or eliminate their normal reaction to storms. These special shirts can be purchased in pet stores
and on line. Some pets are simply too sensitive to storms and are not able to cope no matter what tools you may try. When this is the case, veterinarians may recommend behavior modification medications to calm them down. It is important to know that pets with thunderstorm phobia will most likely have phobias to other loud sounds such as fireworks, so they may also benefit from the same methods mentioned above. ■

iding boots give you callouses,” stated Robert Aiken, Senior Vice President and Managing Broker of the Harry Norman Realtors Forsyth/ Lake Lanier Office. “Callouses are a good pain that makes you tough.” Aiken is not only a respected professional of North Fulton, but also a father of two daughters who love animals, specifically, horses. For several years, Aiken’s office has sponsored many events in the North Fulton community that give back to local charities. One such event is an annual horse show that provides girls the opportunity to display their equestrian skills at Wills Park in Alpharetta. Saturday, July 19, Wills Park was filled to the brim with girls and their horses gathered for the show. The weekend-long equestrian demonstration benefitted Homes for Battered Women in Forsyth, Dawson, Lumpkin and Hall counties, and which also benefitted the Capt. Herb Memorial Fund. The show featured talent from all corners of Georgia. Along with teaching young women valuable life lessons, the annual horse show raises funds for victims of domestic violence. “I’ve always wanted our agents to give back in time, money, and PR,” said Aiken. The press given to Homes for Battered Women goes to increase awareness for the cause of stopping domestic violence. “There is very little support for that cause,” stated Aiken. “No one realizes the ripple effect the horse industry has in Georgia.” In recent years, colleges have begun to acquire equestrian teams to suit the popularity and growing support of the horse-riding community. “We’re raising the bar on the quality of events that take place in the equestrian world,” stated Aiken. Many young women receive equestrian related scholarships based on shows like the one at Wills Park; quintessential networking occurs between high schools and colleges seeking talent for their teams. “Showing breeds self-confidence and self-esteem,” said Aiken, “It makes a whole person out of the girls who ride.” The riders couldn’t agree more. The positive effect of working with horses and fellow equestrians is tangible at competitions. “My favorite part of riding is meeting new people,” stated rider Carri Beach as she lead her horse, Lucy, to the competing ring. Shows such as these help to level the playing field in the equestrian world as well. Not all horse-lovers possess the funds necessary to own a horse. “In this show, girls who can’t afford to ride can still ride,” stated Aiken. Such opportunity breeds beautiful qualities, and subsequently, beautiful people. “The
3 girls are empathetic, sympathetic and very demanding,” Aiken claimed. One must be demanding when working with such large animals. “My favorite part is watching the girls work so hard,” said Aiken. “They wake up at 6am, feed the horses, train with them, and leave late. They conquer a 1,200 lb. animal, from foot planting to jumping.” The lessons learned from horseback riding last a lifetime for any girl involved. “They draw on it as they grow older,” said Aiken. “There’s not a single girl who rides horses that isn’t strong.” To learn more about Harry Norman and the work they do in the North Fulton/South Forsyth area, visit www. harrynorman.com/robertaiken ■

Debra Sweat went from a size 18 to a size 2 as part of her cancer treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
Mother pushes for better cancer diagnosis CTCA patient on road to recovery By ALDO NAHED
aldo@forsythherald.com
A
fter a year of being misdiagnosed, Debra Sweat couldn’t understand what was going on. Sweat, of Chesapeake, Virginia, had a physical exam that showed nothing was wrong. But something wasn’t being detected properly, she said. “Because the mammogram came back with no problem, the doctor didn’t notify me of anything wrong,” Sweat said. “Eventually, I started getting tired, but I assumed it was because I was working nine hours a day, five days a week and had a part-time job on Saturday, and I was taking night classes to get my degree.” A month after graduating with her social science degree, Sweat, a mother of two, found out what was making her ill and causing so much pain. She had pancreatic cancer. When her family found out, they asked her to come to Alpharetta to stay with them, while she received treatment at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center (Southeastern). The facility is located in Newnan, Georgia, south of Atlanta. “People are so busy with their normal 40 | northsidewoman.com | august2014
and busy life that when they feel a twinge or they feel pressure, you just make excuses,” Sweat said. “Now I’ve learned that if something doesn’t feel right, it’s important to get it checked out and not make excuses.” Sweat is passionate about sharing her story in order to encourage others to pay close attention to their bodies and to be aware of their families’ history. Sweat was an active duty member of the U.S. Navy for 11 years. Most recently, she served as a civil service worker in finance for the Coast Guard in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, but in 2013, stepped down in order to begin the fight of her life at Cancer Treatment Centers of America Early in her treatment, Sweat realized an important aspect toward her recovery involved maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She quickly sought out nutritionists at CTCA to help restore her digestive health and over the course of a year went from a size 18 to a size 2. “I cannot put into words how thankful I am for the Cancer Treatments of America,” Sweat said. “People who are diagnosed with cancer and want a second opinion, I would definitely send them to the CTCA.” For more information, visit www. cancercenter.com. ■
