Definition of ‘having it all’ changes with birth of daughter for Layne Kamsler

ine months ago, Alpharetta attorney Layne Kamsler’s return to work after a three-month maternity leave brought with it expected and unexpected emotions as well as a new definition of what makes the perfect day. Daughter, Gracie, is now a year old and Kamsler is becoming a pro at keeping all of her very full plates spinning in tandem. “When I was pregnant, I didn’t really know what to expect after Gracie arrived,” explained Kamsler, an attorney with Hipes & Belle Isle LLC, in Alpharetta. “I worried about having enough time to be a good mom and a good attorney. But after she was born, I learned I just had to be flexible.” She laughs recalling days she would come to the office with “some sort of mystery stain” on her clothes and accepting that her days of being perfectly pulled together at the office are not always going to happen. “But, so far, with the support of a great husband and an amazing employer, I have been able to continue my career and have the family I always dreamed of,” said Kamsler, who lives in Milton. Kamsler grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, graduating from the University of Florida, then the College of William & Mary in Virginia, where she earned her law degree. In 2009, she and her husband, Matt, a software engineer at NCR, moved to the Atlanta area and she immediately found work as an attorney. They knew high-octane careers, a new marriage and babies were not the best combination right away, so parenthood was placed on hold while they built their life as a couple. “While children were always in the equation, we knew from the beginning that we were going to delay starting our family so I could pursue my career,” said Kamsler. “I was worried having a baby might affect my career goals, and my schedule can be unpredictable as a litigator.” She knew from an early age she wanted to be an attorney—her dad was a lawyer--and she even graduated from college in three years knowing law school stretched out another three years. She has been with Hipes & Belle Isle LLC since 2013, serving on the commercial litigation team at the firm with a specialty in employment law.
After practicing law for five years, Kamsler and her husband decided the time was right to expand their family. “I felt secure in my profession and was ready to start a family,” she said. She worked until Gracie was due, then spent three months at home on maternity leave. But being a full-time mom – even for three months – challenged Kamsler, who found herself pulled to work during lulls in infant activity. “There were days when Gracie slept for like 18 hours a day, where I would call into my office and ask if there was anything I could help with, just so I could do something other than dishes or laundry during my down time,” Kamsler said with a laugh. “Don’t get me wrong,” she quickly added. “I had plenty of household chores to fill my hours, but I missed the critical thinking and problem solving that comes with my job.” During her maternity leave, Kamsler’s emotions were a mix of missing the job she loved and concern about placing Gracie in day care when the leave ended. “Emotionally, I worried that Gracie would love me less after I sent her to day care or that our bond formed during my maternity leave would suffer,” Kamsler recalled. “I had nightmares that she would form a stronger attachment to her day-care teacher than she did with me because her teacher saw her more during the week than I did!” Picking the perfect day care that met her strict standards proved to be as difficult as her hardest days as an attorney. “Practically, finding the right day care was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do and it is something we are still working on today,” said Kamsler. “Matt and I toured almost every day care in the area and also considered hiring a nanny at one point.” The first place ended up not being a fit, so the Kamslers changed locations after nine months and are happier now. “I am the first to admit that my expectations are exceedingly high for Gracie’s caregiver, but making sure she is getting the best care possible is the only way I can feel comfortable going back to work,” Kamsler said. “At the end of the day, I try to remind myself that as long

Former executive challenged by the changes in the work world after years away

or nearly two decades, Leslie Brieck had a job she loved in pharmaceutical sales, and she was on track to become the company’s first female vice president when she stepped out of the fast lane and into the carpool lane. Years later, Brieck is navigating a reentry into the workplace and is finding the process is not for the weak of heart. “This has become a game of resilience and patient determination,” the Johns Creek mother of two said with a laugh. Brieck successfully managed work and her first child, Meghan, now 20. But when her second child, Zach, now 16, came along, it became too much to juggle. Slowly realizing she was being pulled in too many directions, Brieck said, “I was having a hard time being Superwoman.” Her husband, John, also traveled extensively and, after the family moved to Johns Creek in 2009 from Gwinnett County, a live-in nanny helped some, but the couple agreed the children needed a parent at home. That’s when the climb up the corporate ladder ended for Brieck. “I struggled with this decision for over a year,” said Brieck, feeling the sting of the decision just as sharply today as she did all those years ago. “I missed my job every single day for about five years. I never questioned that I had made the right decision, but I missed the people, the sense of fulfillment, the tangible results … not to mention the paycheck!” She enjoyed the time with her

children, loved the peace that settled over her family without the distractions of schedules and work, but the itch to work was always there. “As my children grew older and became more independent, the urge to return to work grew stronger,” Brieck said. About four years ago, she re-entered the workforce on a part-time basis, landing a consulting position that allowed her needed flexibility. The search for a fulltime job started when Zach got his driver’s license six months ago. “I decided that now was the time, and I began by focusing on my previous industry,” Brieck said. “I knew it would be challenging, but I didn’t anticipate exactly how challenging!” Tremendous changes had occurred during her absence from the workplace, and the company she worked for had dissolved through mergers and acquisitions. The subsequent reductions in personnel meant fierce competition for available jobs, and her contacts had all scattered. Brieck was most surprised by changes in the recruitment process and the lack of a human touch in hiring. “It’s become a process of automated, impersonal, resume screening with tricky ‘knock-out’ questions,” she said. “In reality, you may be the most qualified candidate, but if you answer one tricky question wrong on the online application, your resume will never see the light of day.” She’s learned to network, taking

diving happily back into her job. “There was a small part of me that was excited to be back and that made me feel even guiltier!” said Kamsler, who traded off lunchtime visits with Gracie at the day care for several weeks with Matt. “The day care had on online system where her activity was logged throughout the day and I would compulsively check it just to see what she was doing.” The transition from working woman to working mom went beyond the simple logistics of increasing her family by a third. Her entire outlook on life changed. Scheduling became the most important part of her day—and not just for clients, but for Gracie, too. “Because I only get to spend three to four hours a day with Gracie during the
t’s likely that at some point in motherhood, every woman looks through her closet filled with the trappings of a previous life and wonders if she’s ready to strap on the high heels and go back to work. For Marsha Ziegler, that time came when her kids reached their teen years — when they spent more time out of the house than in —and her days became filled with free time. “I thought often about going back to work, but it didn’t seem to be the right time until my kids reached the age they are now,” said Zeigler, the mother of two teenagers. Zeigler and her husband, Chris, have lived in Alpharetta for nearly 20 years, and are parents to Zack, a junior at Alpharetta High School, and Mary, a freshman at the same school. She grew up in East Cobb, graduated from Lassiter High School, and earned a business degree at the University of Georgia, where she met Chris, now an attorney in private
practice. After college, Ziegler worked for a series of companies, primarily in the technology field. “I developed software applications and taught software classes for clients around the country. I was often on projects out of town and enjoyed the travel,” Ziegler recalled of her early career days before marriage and children changed the equation. The travel slowed down after she married and became an independent consultant to clients including CocaCola and BellSouth. Even that flexibility was not enough when Zack was born in 1998. “I was able to work part-time [and] I was very fortunate to have a friend baby-sit two days a week,” she said. “But two years later, after my daughter was born, I became a full-time mom.” She debated the decision to become a stay-at-home mom but soon

workweek, it is really important to me that I make the most of every minute I get with her,” she said. “I save chores for before she gets up or after she goes to bed and I try to leave the office by 5 p.m. when I can.” At the same time, Kamsler remains focused on keeping the same level of commitment to work, which means taking her computer home at night to squeeze in work at night while Gracie sleeps. “It is really important to me not to let my work suffer because I had a baby, so I had to learn to balance my work obligations with my family,” she explained. The “perfect day” has also changed for Kamsler, who would have described it pre-baby as one that included a run in the morning, followed by shopping with friends and dinner with a glass of wine in
the evening. “Now my favorite weekends are pancake breakfasts, playing outside and just marveling at how Gracie is growing and learning. There is nothing better at the end of a busy workweek than to hear Gracie’s giggles when I come home,” she said. The idea of “having it all” –the myth of the working woman – is not lost on Kamsler, but she says the definition is different for every woman. “For me, so far, I think my life is pretty great,” said Kamsler, with a healthy baby, a supportive husband and a job she loves. “Don’t get me wrong, our life is far from perfect and there are days when I question my sanity and I question whether I am doing the best thing for Gracie. But, for the most part, we are making it work.” ■

Leap of faith into By TAYLOR WRIGHT

fter a life-changing event about a decade ago, Alpharetta resident, Tracy Olson started thinking about leaving the corporate world and doing something different on her own. It wasn’t an easy decision. She had a successful career in banking and was making great money. An unhealthy divorce led to no child support, no alimony, no car, no money for groceries and, worst of all, no home for Olson. The stakes were high but, after much soul searching, she left corporate America in 2014 and bought Youthtopia MedSpa in Alpharetta. Her goals were to become independent, support her four daughters and manage a small business that was sustainable. Operating a medical spa was not something new to Olson. She had researched the industry before and even tried to purchase an existing business previously. She was attracted to the “med” aspect of the business because it allowed her to offer additional types of services not traditionally found in spas. Some of the services include Botox, Juvederm, fillers, laser facials, hCG weight loss supplies, B-12 shots and microneedling. These types of services were more profitable, made her spa more unique and decreased competition– one aspect of buying a business that she believed was important. 10 | northsidewoman.com | august2015
Olson took over Youthtopia MedSpa in December 2014. She believes that she is on track with both the development of the business as well as her anticipated revenue projections due to her recent investment in advertising and community involvement. After experiencing the business purchasing process, Olson has a few key pieces of advice for anyone interested in either buying a business or starting one. The first thing to remember is to be patient, she said, and wait to find the right environment and conditions. Olson was patient and tried sporadically for about 10 years to get into the medical spa business. Her first attempt was buying a spa in Atlantic Station, which ended up not making financial sense for her current situation. Her second attempt involved partnering with a medical director to open a new location of an existing med spa, but the deal fell through when the business was purchased sooner than expected. Life continued throwing curves at her, but she persisted. She kept her eye on the field, which led her one day to attend a medical spa association event in Atlanta where, coincidentally, the main speaker was the then-owner of Youthtopia, Marla Brown. Unbeknownst to her, she drove past Youthtopia every day to get to her corporate job. After hearing Brown speak at the event, Olson invited her to lunch, where they talked about the

▼ WOMEN IN BUSINESS, Continued from Page 10 medical spa business and got to know each other. Brown soon mentioned that her deal with a new investor had just fallen through and that she was actually looking for a buyer. Olson’s timing was impeccable, and a short time later she bought Brown’s business. Brown remains a trusted friend and advisor to Olson and Youthtopia. Olson’s next piece of advice for starting or buying a business is to have a list of priorities. “Turning down extracurricular activities for the girls was devastating,” Olson remembered. “Saying no to four girls every single day will force you to find a way to make it work and find the money.” Ultimately, the quality of life she wanted for herself and her girls led to the decision to leave corporate America.
“The flip side of owning your own business is that you don’t necessarily have more time and, in fact, I suspect that most of the time you end up working more hours with your own business than you did working for corporate. But these hours,” she said, “are more within my control.” She found that she actually enjoys spending extra time at her business and has to remind herself to leave at the end of the day. Also, Olson said the girls come help her and feel like they are part of the business. She, in turn, has the flexibility to be there for them, even if “there” is at the “office,” where the girls can always just play with the cosmetic products. The third bit of advice Olson offered was to know and be true to yourself. “It was the right move for me as a woman to come out of a highly competitive, cut-throat industry like finance, and come where

women are actually kind and helpful. This is a better industry for me as a human, a woman, and I know I am setting an example for my daughters.” For Olson, it was important to get to a point where she felt comfortable moving on in her career. “I worked the last 15 years to be able to afford to say, ‘I don’t want this job.’ When you make that commitment,” Olson said, “you feel so good about yourself.” Finally, Olson recommends spending adequate amounts of time doing due diligence. The banking world involved a lot of information that took up much of her free time because she felt behind the curve compared to her co-workers. While she felt similarly going into the med spa business, she proudly said, “Nothing comes easy, and my daughters have seen me work for each role I’ve had.” In the near future, Olson hopes to
open more locations of Youthtopia around the Atlanta area. She joked that she would love to open locations in Denver, California, and Chicago. However, she said it is more realistic to start in the metro Atlanta area and possibly extend out to Athens. “With a five-year goal in mind,” she said, “it’d be nice to have a second [location], and in 10 years have a few [more] to continue my footprint and make it a little larger.” “It’s a tough market, but what sets [Youthtopia] apart is that [the spa has] been here nine years in October, we’re down the street from Avalon on Old Milton Parkway, and located in an affluent neighborhood. Mixed with my business spin, I will help drive my Youthtopia to success,” Olson said. To learn more about Youthtopia services, visit their website: www. youthtopiamedspa.com ■

2B Whole
puts a spin on the
average bakery By PAIGE ROMAN

paige@appenmediagroup.com B Whole, 42 Milton Ave. in Alpharetta, is a gluten-free, soy-free, casein-free and mostly dairy-free bakery. They opened in October 2014 and business has been very good, according to manager Karen Morabito. She said many people come in for the first time because they are simply curious, but after trying the array of different foods the bakery offers, they start really watching what they eat. “A larger number of customers who come in don’t necessarily have food allergies, they just find it an added benefit to eat at a bakery that is gluten-free,” Morabito said. Owner Toula Argentis opened 2B Whole after working in Kennesaw for three years in a shared kitchen. Her passion for baking spans 20-plus years, and her goal had always been to open a bakery of her own. Argentis and one of her sons have serious food allergies and, because of that, she was inspired to open a bakery that had a twist on the ingredients used in the foods. She began experimenting with different gluten-free products in order to provide her family with great-tasting food and desserts that were gluten-free and, in some

cases, dairy- and sugar-free. 2B whole serves an array of sweet, paleo and vegan items, a savory line with lunches including sandwiches, pizzas and calzones. They are now serving chicken and waffles and biscuits on the weekends. They use non-GMO ingredients that are all organic and use all-natural dyes as well. A proprietary dough mix of rice flour, tapioca starch, cornstarch, potato starch, potato flour and arrowroot is what 2B Whole uses instead of wheat flour. No preservatives or additives are ever added to their products. 2B Whole has a selection of items that barely stay on the shelves, but Morabito said the specialty item or “best seller” would have to be a tie between the samoa bars and the derby bars. Argentis plans to keep the bakery at the Milton Avenue location and expansions to the facility are planned over the next few weeks. With 2B Whole growing, Morabito said they are excited and eager to see business pick up even more after the expansions are complete. The hours at 2B Whole have recently changed. Open for business Monday through Saturday, the hours Monday through Wednesday are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Thursdays, people attending Food Truck Alley can stop in and check out the bakery until 9 p.m. Saturday hours are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Some of 2B Whole’s products also are available at the Alpharetta Farmers’ Market Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. ■

Debut author Susan Sands’ debut novel, “Again, Alabama,” cooks up a story of good food, big family, and the nostalgia of going home By KIMBERLY BROCK
J PHOT BY ANDREA BROWN
Author Susan Sands
Roots& Rue 16 | northsidewoman.com | august2015
ohns Creek debut author Susan Sands grew up in a small Louisiana town where the food was rich and the stories were large. “I’m a Southern belle originally from Negreet, Louisiana, a tiny town in Northwest Louisiana near the Texas border where the cows, horses and chickens all roam together and everybody lives on ‘land.’ There aren’t any neighborhoods to speak of, and our address back then was a rural route.” While Sands’ debut novel, “Again, Alabama,” is set a couple of states over, as the title suggests, the Deep South location is just where she likes it. Her heroine, Cammie, has overcome some tough stuff to get out of her small hometown only to be manipulated back by her large, raucous, but well-meaning family. Coming home is a failure of sorts after a very public humiliation in her career. “It involves a hair fire lit during a nationally televised crepe Suzette cooking demonstration. Long story,” Sands said, laughing. “But Cammie’s family fails to mention that the former love of her life, Grey Harrison, is back in town with his 9-year-old daughter. He’s the same guy who got her best friend pregnant 10 years ago and married her. Yeah, that guy.” Amid her nutty family, her notoriety in a small town, and a journey of forgiveness, Sands’ main character realizes that home holds her heart, much like the author herself. “Sadly, I got out of the country as soon as I could in the way young girls looking for more will do. I got a degree, married and moved on. But my smalltown values linger.” She is nostalgic when it comes to her roots. And her rue. “My own love of food and cooking inspired my choice of professions for my character. No matter what kind of stress or angst I have ongoing in my own life, I can cook and create in the kitchen. One of my grandfathers was a chef and the other was an organic gardener years before it became all the rage. A
lpharetta resident Marianna Raffensperger has a heart for children and her years of quietly volunteering have changed the daily lives of many. If you meet her, it won’t be long before you’re considering ways you can give back, too. “I’d love to see you at the center,” she’ll say. “You would love it.” The center where Raffensperger shares her time is Foster Care Support Foundation, a nonprofit organization in Roswell. “I love knowing that these children are being clothed and outfitted for life in ways that make them feel valued,” she said. Raffensperger, who grew up in Augusta and studied dental hygiene at the University of Alabama, married and moved with husband, Hal, to North Carolina, New Jersey and Dunwoody before building a home in Alpharetta in 1988. Seventeen years later, her involvement with FCSF came with a change in churches. “Ten years ago, my husband and I became members of Alpharetta Presbyterian Church,” she said. “Having always been an avid volunteer, I was looking for new ways to advocate on behalf of children, to be a voice for those unable to speak for themselves. A member of the church was beginning a new outreach ministry to Foster Care Support Foundation. This became a perfect fit for me. “A group of two or three ladies began regularly volunteering at the Roswell donation and distribution center. There, we sort and size donations of new and ‘gently used’ clothing, toys, equipment, etc.” According to their website, FCSF serves “basic-care (costs reimbursed less than $25 per day) foster children residing in Georgia's foster homes, administered by the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) and children housed by private agencies,” providing free clothing, infant equipment and developmental toys to thousands of children in foster and relative care. They partner with Georgia's DFCS for child referral, verification, foster-parent recruiting and foster-parent training. They go

I love that we are careful with our selections and the children can be proud and feel that they fit in when they wear the clothes or ride the bikes or play with the toys that we’ve helped to provide.” Raffensperger is quick to point out there’s a place for anyone looking to give back at FCSF, whether it’s by joining her at the donation and distribution center, donating supplies or funds, learning more about fostering a child, or becoming a mentor to those who are aging out of the system. She insists she’s like many others in her community with a family of their own – she has three grown children, six grandchildren and twin greatgrandsons. Raffensperger says they inspire her to reach out to the children and families that depend on FCSF. “Volunteering at Foster Care has brought with it many friendships,” she said. “It gives my life balance and greater meaning and helps me to live out my Christian faith.” For more information or to become involved, please go to www.fostercares.org. ■

Creating your Business Capsule Wardrobe By LORI WYNNE
I
t’s back to school for the kids and back to work for their teachers and mothers. Perhaps you are a recent college graduate entering the workforce for the first time. You don’t need an expensive and exhaustive wardrobe to look fashionably work appropriate. Creating a business capsule wardrobe can be done with a few of my proven tips. Start creating the color story of your capsule by picking a piece in your wardrobe you really love and creating the capsule around it. It could be a great handbag, scarf or shoes. For this capsule, I chose a blush leather jacket. Next, choose a neutral color for your foundation, or suit, pieces in black, charcoal, navy or brown. Choose a secondary neutral color. You can use cream, bright white, camel or even a cool taupe. A secondary neutral color creates a more cohesive wardrobe. Now choose your pop of color! For example, I chose Marsala, the color of the year. When choosing your pieces, make sure each item goes with at least three other items in the capsule.
Suit:
This is your investment piece. Include a structured jacket, pant, dress or skirt. If you find pieces made in the same suiting material BUY THEM! Purchase from a store that will sell the pieces individually since most women are not the same size on top as bottom. Theory at Nordstrom, Calvin Klein at Macy’s, and Etcetera are examples of brands that sell their matching pieces individually. Break up the suit and wear each of these pieces with other items in the capsule.
knit with three-quarter-length sleeve. A professional wardrobe requires it to be knee length. Wrap dresses are multiseasonal and look great with strappy sandals in the summer or tall boots and leather jacket in the fall.
Five tops:
Some great capsule pieces could include printed silk or polyester blouses with sleeves, shells in black and white, a fine-gauge cardigan, a crew neck fine-gauge, silk-blend, short-sleeved sweater, or flow-y yet professional longer blouses.
Three bottoms:
Although this seems obvious, a good pair of pants can go a long way. Some possibilities are trousers, pencil or flare knee-length skirts, and on-trend work-appropriate pencil pants.
Shoes:
Pumps and loafers are your two go-to shoes. I love a wedge heel! You must own basic black pumps and nude pumps. Incorporating flats or loafers in an animal print or metallic tones add interest to this concise capsule wardrobe. Alternate what pair you wear every day. It’s healthier for your feet and your shoes will last longer.
Jacket:
Include a structured jacket that will go with all of your neutral bottoms. Consider one in a color that will “pop” and add variety to your outfits. Long or short is up to you and your body type. Choose something beyond the traditional blazer with notched collar. Collarless or wide and flowy lapel is up to you. Perhaps a sleek leather jacket speaks to your inner biker babe.
Dress: Find one in a travel-friendly jersey or ponté 20 | northsidewoman.com | august2015

Structured bag:
Another investment piece, choose a bag large enough to hold your files or computer. A zip top is best. I adore leather because of the longevity. A bag with metal feet on the bottom protects the underside of the bag. Including a pop of color or keeping it neutral is up to you. Find a coordinating small clutch that holds your cell phone, debit card/cash and business cards for lunchtime jaunts or networking events.
Printed scarf:
Tie around your neck, waist of your dress, around the handle of your purse, or in your hair. A timeless style is typically long, relatively slim and sheer. This is the perfect accessory to pull outfits together.
Classic, sophisticated jewelry:
Jewelry is the icing on top. Pearls, a classic understated wristwatch, sterling silver graduated beads from Tiffany & Co. or Stella & Dot versatile pieces such as the Eclipse necklace. Consider a statement necklace in mixed metals. It works with all of the hardware on your purses, shoes and jackets.
Final Tip:
...is a wide range of experiences for children to learn respect for the world, its diverse people, and the environment.

Interiors
orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on the staples and fads.
Why Do You Need an Interior Designer?
A
s an interior designer, one of the things I am told most frequently is, “I don’t have the money to hire a designer”. My answer is always the same, “You can’t afford not to hire a designer!” A qualified designer will not only assist with space planning layout but will also have knowledge of proper size, balance and scale. Often, mistakes are made by impulsive buys of pieces that although stunning in a showroom are not correct for your home. In addition to space planning, a good designer will factor in your personality, taste and lifestyle while making recommendations. They will also be skilled at incorporating family heirlooms and prized possessions. A designer will eliminate a lot of footwork and stress by knowing the best value for
certain products. Often, designers will pass discounts on to clients saving hundreds to thousands of dollars. They will advise you how to use your money in order to get the maximum decorative impact, assure that you have successfully integrated artwork and accessories, established floral points and have maximized your lighting plan. If you are planning to redecorate or decorate for the first time, your designer will guide you in creating your dream home, while following your budget. A good designer will keep your vision foremost, searching for pieces specific to your tastes and personality and advise you to be true to what you love in home décor. Having a professional involved is a sure way to reach your vision in a timely and cost efficient manner. Happy Decorating! ■

with Dr. Cathy
What happened to my libido? W
e thought those teenage urges would linger and that honeymoon phase would be everlasting, but now it seems you find your sexual appetite has dipped a little, or a lot, below the level it once was or that you desire it to be. Well, you are definitely not alone. Low libido is one of the most common sexual complaints and many culprits may be to blame.
Why does this happen? We all would love that steamy seduction scene in the bedroom followed by a night of incredible passion, right? The issue of lost or low libido can be a complicated question to answer and dissect. It is, however, your sexual guide for wellness so it is important to carefully examine it. Stubborn libido can be impacted by a combination of physical and mental health as well as emotional connection and sexual compatibility. The way we live, our lifestyle, inevitable involves changes from each decade and each life stage we enter. As we get older and become busier, our sleep, exercise and eating habits tend to be the first things to be neglected. If these crucial survival habits are not nurtured, other biological functions begin to fall short, including our need for sex. These may then lead to a variety of physical health problems including diabetes, arthritis and heart-related diseases. Prescription drugs, including antidepressants and blood-pressure medications, may also be a contributing factor. Then there are hormones, the crazy cocktails we can’t see but are constantly racing through our bodies. Hormones play a
huge role in the urge for coitus and must be in balance not only for a sturdy sexual appetite but also a healthy body overall. The obvious culprits that lead to hormonal imbalances include pregnancy, nursing and menopause. However, sometimes hormones may be out of tune for underlying reasons which may be assessed and corrected by a physician and hormone-therapy treatment. If physical problems don’t seem to be suspect for lacking lust, examine any psychological and emotional disturbances that may be present. If there is a mental matter taking up space in your brain, such as worry, stress or anxiety, limited libido can be a given side effect. An emotional connection is also necessary with your partner and unresolved relationship issues such as lack of communication or distrust are prime markers leading to dissolved intimacy. Sex is meant to boost our health and quality of life, if your drive for desire is suddenly in neutral, it may be time to find out why. You might be surprised, once you tackle your dwindling libido, what other areas will just fall into place. Please always remember to practice all sexual activity responsibly and safely. ■
Dr. Cathy is a board-certified physician with emphasis in the treatment of sexual dysfunction triggered or related to hormonal imbalances. She specializes in holistic and integrative medicine while offering counseling for couples with relationship and intimacy concerns.

northside man Are you ever scared when your station gets called?
It's a big adrenaline rush when we get a call for a structure fire. I think everyone always has a little fear while doing this job. It’s important for us to be aware of the conditions and surroundings while working inside of a structure fire or on a scene. Our main goal is always to keep ourselves and everyone else safe.
What do you and the other firefighters do for fun at the station while you are on duty?
We usually cook and eat together while at the station, watch TV, or talk and joke with each other.

He has been a firefighter for almost two years. He decided he wanted to be a firefighter early in high school and was heavily influenced by his father, who worked as an officer for the New York City Police Department for many years. Gallo enjoys working for the fire department and says it is very rewarding. “The camaraderie and pride in the job has to be the biggest reason I look forward to going to work each shift,” he said. When Gallo is not at the station, he enjoys going to the gym, being out on a lake, trying new restaurants or catching a Braves game. ■

find it pretty easy to accommodate dating with having two days off after every third day I'm at work.
What is your schedule like as a firefighter?
We work 24 hours on and 48 hours off. I think what a lot of people don't realize is that we don't have to stay up the whole 24hour shift. We do get to sleep.
What do you look for in a woman? I look for women who are easygoing and outgoing. Someone who enjoys the same interests as I do is attractive.
What is your favorite date spot?
Definitely taking a girl to a Braves game.
Are you single?
Yes, I am definitely on the market!

But I have never wanted to give up.” She is not alone on her journey, noting she has lots of friends who are also making the transition from home to work. “I know there is a huge untapped talent pool in this group of women who are ready to re-enter, and it will just be a matter of getting the right opportunity at the right time for each of us,” she says.

Of the positives, she loved her kids’ play groups when they were young, becoming very active in their schools when they got older and being a part of their extracurricular activities. In the category of “not as much fun” were the occasional reminders of her life as a career woman: getting dressed up in something other than yoga pants and T-shirts with mystery stains on the shoulders, conversations with other adults, going out for lunch with colleagues and, especially, the paychecks. “I remember being in the midst of dinner mayhem with two little kids and my husband calling to tell me he was dining at Bones with clients and thinking ‘Gee, that would be nice’ as I wiped spaghetti off the floor and out of every crevice of the high chair,” Zeigler said with a laugh. Brieck advises women who are considering going back to work to be focused, have a strategy and know your strengths. “Be able to explain your skill set and what you’re looking for in 30 seconds or less,” she advised. “Be positive – have thick skin and don’t take too much personally.” Brieck says starting out part time may allow women to get their skills up to speed and build confidence, as well. Don’t discount any years of volunteer work, she said. Organization, leadership and multitasking are all skills needed in the workplace, which are honed in years of volunteer work. “Maybe most importantly, take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the journey. Take care of yourself and make time for fun and enjoyment every day. Being stressed out and panicked won’t help you get what you really want and deserve!” ■

Video conferences, webinars and telecommuting are now standard practice, as is flexibility where you work. On the downside, benefits packages are shrinking. Knowing that her family was still the priority, Ziegler searched for a position with specific requirements in mind. “I looked for a job that had somewhat flexible hours, no weekend or after-hours work, a short commute and no required travel. I didn’t want to telecommute – I have been a stayat-home mom for 14 years. I was ready to not be at home!” said Ziegler, who eventually landed her “perfect job” with an established local company. The one thing she doesn’t regret is the time she took off to raise her family, and this is advice she passes on to other moms looking to re-enter the workplace. Ziegler advises women to focus on the skills they have that would benefit a company, such as multitasking and organizing, and all the roles they had in volunteer organizations. “Reach out to previous co-workers for job leads and recommendations,” she said. “Reconnect with those who valued what you did in the workplace. Be persistent and the right job will come along when it’s the right time.” ■

Summer Tips for Our Canine Friends T
he warmest summer days are usually during the month of August. Being responsible dog owners means making sure our pets are protected from the heat. It is important to know that dogs don’t have the ability to sweat like humans do. They regulate their body temperature by panting. Caretakers can help pets stay cool a variety of ways, including making sure dogs have access to fresh water, which is one of the most important factors in cooling down our canine friends. Keeping fresh water available is always important, especially during the hot summer months. This will help them to stay hydrated. If you are taking them for a walk, be sure you do so during the cooler times
of the day, usually evening and early morning. If you are going to bathe dogs using an outdoor water hose, make sure you run water through the hose before it touches your pets. Water hoses are often sitting out under the hot summer sun, and the temperature inside the hose can become so hot that you can give your canine friends third-degree burns just by wetting them down! Once the hot water runs through the hose and turns cool, you can proceed safely without running the risk of hurting your pets. Dogs are loyal, playful friends that will do anything to please us. That being said, please be sure not to jog with your pet during the hottest part of the day. They will not know when to stop. Too many times we at Village Animal Hospital see pets that need emergency assistance because they have been running with their owners under the hot summer sun to the point of heat exhaustion. If you have any other questions about how to best support your pet during the summer months, please contact your veterinarian. Stay cool! â–

Back to school NOT Back to stress
A
s the new school year approaches, students are excited to meet their teachers, take different classes and rekindle friendships. However, on the homefront, kids going back to school can lead to stress. There are a few ways for your children to have the ultimate back-to-school experience with low anxiety. Here are some suggestions for how to go back to school without going back to the stress.
1. GET IN A ROUTINE
Buying back-to-school supplies can be a stressful outing as everyone else in your area needs the same materials. Similar to the grocery store, you want to avoid Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings. If possible, choose a day and time that are not popular where you can still get the best deals without dealing with crowds.
3. ORGANIZE YOUR HOME
E
It is easy to let your home get a bit more disorganized in the summer with vacations, camps and frequent outings. Sooner rather than later, take time to unclutter. Try arranging one room per day de leading up to the first week of th a s & si d t s for e w o ip n school. This gradual organization me will lead to less stress when the kids need the space to work.

Once the summer break is over, going to bed at the right hour and waking up early will probably be the most difficult transition. Leading up to their first day back, start encouraging your children to go to bed and to wake up 15-20 minutes earlier. Repeat this routine until they reach a reasonable hour on both sides of the day.
2. SHOP AT THE RIGHT TIME

4. LOCATE A HOMEWORK SPACE
Speaking of space, it is important to find an area in your home where your children can organize schoolwork. They need a designated spot (just like their desk in the classroom) to keep all their school materials and to stay focused.
5. DONATE
Back-to-school shopping will most likely include clothing. Before you purchase new clothing for your kids, figure out what they truly need. Clean out their closets and donate clothing that no longer fits or that they no longer wear. If you are looking for an incentive, there are children’s consignment shops that will trade clothing for cash. Often, they will offer more money if you spend it in store. ■

A local Milton High school graduate reached the highlight of her musical career at the age of 31 when she played at Carnegie Hall in June.

K
arrie Gawron, a former Milton High School band member, currently lives in New York and is a clarinet player for the Brooklyn-based Grand Street Community Band. The ensemble consists of 80 adults who are mostly working professionals, but not necessarily professional musicians. And, in June, the Grand Street Community Band was invited to play at Carnegie Hall. “Here were 80 people at Carnegie Hall who had never played there that shared the special experience,” Gawron said. “It’s something we still talk about to this day.” Gawron moved to New York for an advertising internship and was later hired by the company. But she wanted to stay involved in music and began volunteering with the Grand Street Community Band. “It is a place for people to go who played music in high school and college but chose not to go into as a career,” she said. In Gawron’s case, she and her two siblings were encouraged to pursue music as children.

The family moved to Germany when she was 7, where her choice of musical instruments didn’t include much more than a recorder, which is exactly what she picked up. Her father then bought a player piano, also known as a pianola, that operated with rolls of perforated music paper. “Anything that we had a roll for, we played,” Gawron said. When the family moved back to the States, Gawron’s middle school required students to participate in music classes, and students had to audition with each type of instrument. This is an experience Gawron now appreciates because she realizes her music teachers were trying to have each student be the best they could be. Although she wanted to play the flute, her teachers suggested the shape of her mouth was more suited to playing the clarinet. And, nearly 20 years later, it was the clarinet that Gawron played in Carnegie Hall. Gawron, who has been playing with the Grand Street Community Band for nine months, enjoys being part of the ensemble because it is a way to socialize and meet people in the big city.
Karrie on stage before the Carnegie Hall performance in June.
Of her three concerts so far, she said Carnegie Hall has been the most notable. In addition to being a legendary venue, the Carnegie Hall performance also united the ensemble in a special way, she said. When asked about the ratio of men to women in the Grand Street Community Band, Gawron said it is pretty even. Even though she plays an instrument that is stereotypically played by women, she had some advice for her fellow musicians: “As a woman, don’t let somebody tell you that you’re supposed to choose a more feminine instrument. Same goes for men. Music is a place that doesn’t matter if you’re a woman or man. As long as you can play, that’s all people really care about.” Even though her time with the Grand Street Community Band has been unforgettable, the Milton grad is looking to move back home to Alpharetta this fall. And, in addition to seeking work as an art director or graphic designer in Atlanta, Gawron is also hoping to build on her Carnegie Hall experience by finding a new music ensemble based in Alpharetta. ■
