Hello to back to school!

ello to seeing their smiley faces at 6 a.m., and the exhausting look at the end of the day, after sports workouts. Hello to tons of homework and no free time. No more sleeping until noon and keeping me awake until after midnight. No more smelly kids hanging all over my furniture playing videos games eating and drinking me out of house and home. Sarcasm aside, it’s nice when the kids are back on a routine. Not sure about anyone else, but my kids seem to get bored after being home about two weeks and school time is always welcomed.

Don’t get me wrong — if I could take the summer off with them maybe my perspective would be different. I would love to load up the Winnebago and travel the country for 10 weeks with not a care in the world. But the reality is work gets in the way. School time brings more structure to the household and I think everyone works better as a unit when there is structure and order. Plus, all their friends are all under one building now, so they should be excited, too, right? But I am looking forward to the time when they are working all day and I’m the one that gets to sleep until noon! ■

Thriving in her second chapter Life changes send Roswell businesswoman down new path By CANDY WAYLOCK

candy@northsidewoman.com

S

tella Dowling never set her sights on being a trailblazer and entrepreneur, but today finds herself a successful businesswoman running three highperforming companies. In the early 1990’s, Dowling was living what she considered her dream life as a wife and stay-at-home mom, happy and fulfilled, in her cottage home in downtown Roswell. That life abruptly changed in 1995, sending Dowling down a new path in the second chapter of her life. “I found myself single [and] trying to raise two young daughters,” said Dowling, an Alabama native who has lived in Roswell for more than 30 years. “It was then that I realized I needed to take the entrepreneurial path because it would allow me to spend more time with my children.” She knew owning her own business would allow her to keep the flexibility and independence she needed as a mother, while earning an income that was tied directly to how hard she was willing to work. Dowling reached back to her past work life in corporate America, and took a sales job with a telecommunications company. When the company was sold a few years later, she parlayed that experience to start her own telecommunications company, 1Source International, in 2001. The Roswell-based company specializes in helping businesses leverage their telecommuting and distance communications capabilities. In 2017, she founded 1Source Events to help businesses create custom

virtual event experiences. “Today 1Source is a multi-million dollar company with over 5000 customers nationwide,” said Dowling, who earned her degree in Music Education from Florida State. She always knew the entrepreneurial spark lay inside her, so Dowling was not surprised she had the temperament to take on the corporate world. “As a young child my mother would refer to me as ‘The Little Crusader’,” laughed Dowling. “I always wanted to make a difference yet wasn’t sure that running my own business was the path that I would take.” With 1Source established and successful, Dowling got the urge to launch a third company – one that had a more personal goal attached. An animal lover all her life, beginning with her first kitten at age 8, Dowling looked for a new venture that had an “altruistic focus.” “I started thinking about [the idea of] Yuppy Puppy City Kitty about 10 years before I actually launched it,” said Dowling. “It haunted me for years until I finally took the leap to start it.” In 2015, Yuppy Puppy City Kitty (YPCK) was founded in Roswell, providing premium pet care supplies through both direct and wholesale customers nationally. From the onset, helping animal welfare

and rescue groups has been a key mission of the company. “[Since its founding] YPCK has donated to charities not just in Georgia but throughout the United States,” said Dowling. “This has been an important part of our company’s mission from the start and will continue to be a focus moving forward.” In April, YPCK donated $80,000 to Atlanta-based FurKids Animal Rescue, Atlanta’s largest animal rescue and no-kill shelter which adopted more than 4,000 animals in 2016. Other organizations that have benefited from YPCK include Ahimsa House, Act 2 Pups, Oregon Humane Society, Georgia Canine Rescue & Rehabilitation Center, Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue & Adoption and Beagle Freedom Project. Dowling is proud of the fact that the majority of her 30 employees and 11 contractors are women, and YPKC in particular has sales model that supports a flexible schedule – perfect for part time or stay at home moms. She knows how important that is, having juggled working and Just FUR Puppy 20# Gold Bundle parenting when her two daughters – now 33 and 28 – were • 20 lbs. of Puppy's Choice Chicken and Brown Rice Diet for healthy growth of dogs under 1 growing up. year old Although she is well established now, Dowling never • Gobble Chips - a healthy treat made with forgets the hard work required in the beginning to get to turkey and krill oil for skin and coat health this point. • Bitty Bites PB - the perfect training treat in a tempting Peanut Butter flavor. “Starting a company is not easy...people often think it’s all glamour and fun,” said Dowling. “There are times when you question why you did it...when you are exhausted. Fear can overcome you.” Unlike a 9 to 5 job, being a business owner means never clocking out, because the work never ends. “Being an entrepreneur, taking the risk and facing my fears, definitely made me stronger and taught me to be self-reliant,” said Dowling. “My true passion is to mentor and assist others in becoming independent and strong as well.” Looking forward, Dowling sees opportunities ahead, especially with YPCK since the pet industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. “People no longer view their pet as a pet but clearly as a member of the family,” said Dowling. “Offering quality, premium pet products for our furkids fits the [growing need].” She loves that awareness about animal welfare has been growing in the past several years, and hopes Georgia will soon follow the national trend in passing stricter laws for animal cruelty. Dowling says she is pleased that she is able to support the groups on the front lines of animal rescue and welfare. She looks back on her path to where she is now, and is grateful to be where she is. “Entrepreneurship has taught me a tremendous amount about people,” said Dowling. “I believe the core of a company is simply about people and the lives it can impact. Starting my own business has changed my outlook on failure. My favorite quote is ‘without the darkness, you cannot see the stars’”. ■

bout five years ago, Karen Wise was approached by a few mothers of her son’s friends. Her son, Gavin, born with Down Syndrome and the families were looking for exercise classes for their children with special needs. As Wise was already teaching fitness classes at the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta YMCA, she was a perfect fit for the job. “Our wellness director was excited to have this program at the Alpharetta Y from the start,” Wise said. “I’ve experienced nothing but support from everyone at our Y.” The program started with one class a week held after school hours and has grown to three classes a week, including special needs Y-Fit, dance and yoga. As someone who’s been in the fitness and wellness industry for over 30 years, Wise has experience in corporate and nonprofit wellness, personal training, fitness testing and nutrition. Additionally, she is certified to teach many types of classes including Pilates, yoga, boot camp and spinning. Currently, she is the group fitness coordinator at the Alpharetta YMCA and has taught classes there since 1999 for various groups, including children and young adults with special needs. She’s been married to her husband, Rich, for 23 years and they have five children — Eve, Gavin, Ian, Mary Rose and Hannah. “It was Gavin and his friends that prompted me to start the special needs fitness program at our YMCA,” Wise said. “My enthusiasm for this program, of course, stems from seeing Gavin and his friends have so much fun getting fit together. They’ve strengthened their friendship bonds while getting in shape this summer.” From the start, Wise said her whole family has been involved from volunteering every week with the teens

and young adults. “I couldn’t do it without Rich and the kids’ commitment to this program,” Wise said. “It’s definitely something our whole family looks forward to each week. The teens and young adults in the class literally light up when Rich and my kids walk in the room. The Wise bunch comes as a package.” This summer, Wise said a new threehour drop-off fitness program for two days a week began for teens and young adults with special needs. “This idea came from a couple parents that came to me, concerned about their teens with special needs having too much screen time and not enough activity this summer,” Wise said. However, programs for older teens and young adults with special needs can be expensive, she said. Some donations to the “WhY It Matters” campaign allowed the gym to offer the program at a very low cost for the families. “At the Y, we put our heads together and came up with this low-cost program, consisting of Youth in Motion taught by one of our wellness coaches, Stephen Kravitz, some outdoor camp activities on the Greenway, basketball and active games and, of course, my Y-Fit and Yoga classes,” Wise said. “I’m so excited that this program has taken off and I look forward to spreading this program to other YMCAs in our area.” ■

Alpharetta sisters urge tee TeenHOP, promotes leadership and charity for young and old By JORDAN MEAKER

news@appenmediagroup.com

B

Gracelyn Leath,17 and Brooke Leath,16, devote their time running TeenHOP and spreading their love for volunteering.

efore they were even in high school, sisters Gracelyn and Brooke Leath were making an impact in their community. Inspired by a yearly volunteering event held at their school, the sisters said they got hooked on helping others and wanted to continue making a difference with their friends. As a result, the Leath sisters founded a nonprofit in 2012 called Teens Help Other People, or TeenHOP, to help them do just that. “We wanted to do something we could do every day instead of just one day of the year,” Gracelyn said. TeenHOP is a community service program with the mission to empower youth and adults to volunteer in their communities and encourage others to develop leadership skills and live healthy lifestyles. Teens can join an existing TeenHOP chapter in their area or create a new chapter with the help of Gracelyn and Brooke. When members join the club, they can record their service hours on TeenHOP’s website. Having a log of volunteering hours becomes crucial when high schoolers become members in clubs like National Honor Society and Beta Club, or when they apply to colleges.

Gracelyn Leath volunteers at Dogwood Forest Assisted Living Community, where the Leaths made Valentine's Day cards for the elderly.

“The TeenHOP board verifies they volunteered, so they can prove they actually volunteered for the organization,” Brooke said. TeenHOP members also gain access to Leadership Camps and the TeenHOP Leadership Gavel Club, which partners with Toastmasters to teach public speaking skills. “It gives teens self-confidence and the ability to talk with everybody and not be fearful,” said Brooke, who is the vice president of education for the club. Gracelyn serves as the founding charter member.

Now, TeenHOP has more than 50 chapters in Georgia, many chapters around the country and a few around the world, in countries such as Australia. Gracelyn and Brooke travel around the country visiting TeenHOP chapters, spreading the word about the club and planning events like Gavel Club meetings. “We encourage volunteering all the time. Volunteering is a lifestyle,” Gracelyn said. The sisters are dualenrolled at Georgia Cyber Academy, the state’s public online school, and Gwinnett Technical College. Both will be entering their senior year of high school and agree their non-traditional education helps them to run TeenHOP while preparing for college. “It allows us the freedom to help other people with their needs,” Brooke said. “If they need help organizing something for TeenHOP, we can be there because we’re not stuck in school all day.” The sisters are members of many clubs in their school, including National Honor Society and Beta Club. Both said they enjoy reading, writing and blogging in their free time. “We love our school because even though it’s online, it has so many clubs, and so many clubs we can also integrate with TeenHOP,” Gracelyn said. The Leaths encourage students at their schools to join the club, and they travel with a

collection of TeenHOP brochures in their car. Dual-enrolling has also helped both sisters get an early start to their college educations. Gracelyn aspires to become a criminal justice lawyer, and Brooke aims to become a highrisk pregnancy doctor. Both are looking at the University of Georgia and Emory University as options. The sisters plan to stay involved in TeenHOP through college and beyond. “Even though we’re going to college, I don’t want this just to be a part of my past,” Brooke said. “I want to be able to say, ‘This is a part of me, this is who I am.’ ” “When it’s your passion, you can’t just let it fade away,” Gracelyn added. ■

You will feel 2032% better about your own life after reading this book.” Amy's Neighbor

arietta native Amy Lyles’ humorous memoir, “The Amy Binegar-KimmesLyle Book of Failures,” tackles a variety of subjects from divorce to losing your job, to being a step-mom. Her “Tina Fey” humorous style keeps you laughing throughout the entire book. Amy takes a collection of life experiences from over 40 years and portrays them in a style that is more real and believable than what you see on Facebook. People’s lives are never really all that perfect, something is usually going berserk, especially if you have a big or blended family! There were several chapters in the book I could personally relate to, but the one part that really hit close to home was the chapter on Atlanta Lawn and Tennis (ALTA). I personally think I have witnessed this happening at one of my tennis matches years ago. That was when I stopped playing tennis. You will definitely appreciate your own family dysfunction as you read through all of Amy’s “Book of Failures,” her first book. Can’t wait to see more from her. ■

Releasing a child’s ‘ inner wealth’ Program to help struggling youth opens in Milton

By CANDY WAYLOCK

candy@northsidewoman.com

D

eLisa Boyd of Alpharetta knows all too well the importance of growing up surrounded by caring, supportive adults — especially when parents are not around to fill in the voids. “I was that child who experienced being reared by a single parent and being subjected to not only verbal abuse but physical abuse as well,” said Boyd, who grew up in New Jersey. “But despite the negative, I had two aunts that thought the world of me and I thought the world of them.” From a very young age, she knew her life path would be serving families and children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. “I was just a girl from Rahway, NJ, with two dedicated maternal great-aunts that dedicated their lives to our family,” said Boyd, who went on to be the first in her family to earn a college degree. The mother of three recently relocated to Alpharetta with her husband and children to continue the path she started in Princeton, N.J., with underserved children. In January, Boyd opened The GEMS Network in Milton, focused on helping children who are challenged behaviorally, emotionally, socially or academically. It follows the structure of the Nurtured Heart Approach

(NHA) which focuses on building a child’s “inner wealth,” said Boyd. The program, developed by Howard Glasser of the Children’s Success Foundation, works for all children, but is focused on the most challenging children, including those with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Asperger Syndrome, anxiety disorders and self-injurious behaviors. “There is no typical client because our goal is to build stronger communities, which includes in the home and school environments,” Boyd explained. After two decades of working to improve the lives of children, Boyd said the Nurtured Heart Approach spoke to her DeLisa Boyd, owner like no other program had before. It is a curriculum The GEMS Network for relationships based on three standards: refuse to energize negative behavior, energize the positive and establish clear rules and boundaries. “NHA supports adults in relating to children in ways that guide them to use their intensity successfully and positively,” she explained. “Children come to see their intensity as fuel for greatness, not as a deficit or a handicap.” The GEMS Network works with children from

preschool to 18, and Boyd works to involve the entire “village” in helping the child. She began a partnership with Alpharetta High School where two of her children attend, creating “Brand Ambassadors” for outreach to their peers. “Indirectly, these young men and women will begin changing their language...which then changes the culture,” said Boyd, noting she is also working with Alpharetta Parks and Recreation and the city of Fairburn in South Fulton. Boyd wakes each morning with a prayer to help parents in crisis, and to involve others in her mission. “Dealing with intense children can be challenging and stressful,” Boyd said. “My prayer is that Georgia will embrace the approach as a standard for education. Whether they realize it or not, educators possess the power of speaking life or death into a child.” At the same time, Boyd said children need to understand that the role model adults in their lives are examples of the future that lies ahead. ■

Marie Louise diadem owned by Marjorie Merriweather Post.

Learning the Art of Collecting By LORI WYNNE Style Contributor

M

arjorie Merriweather Post (1887-1973) was the heiress to the Post Cereal empire and the owner of General Foods, Inc. She was a charitable “adopted” Southern socialite who spent a portion of her fortune collecting Russian and French art and jewelry. Learning about her life, style and purpose prompted a study on the art of collecting and what we can learn from Post. While most of us do not have the spending budget of an heiress, there are some things we can learn from her experiences, and we can use them to make mindful use of our own life experiences and collect with a long-term purpose in mind.

Use your unique life experiences to educate yourself

Her interest in Russian fine art and jewelry was prompted by her second husband, Joseph E. Davies’ 18-month assignment as U.S. Ambassador to Russia. While many of us have the opportunity to live abroad or travel extensively, do we mindfully take full advantage of the blessed opportunities as Post did? She became a serious student of the Russian Empire’s jewelry, religious art and such treasures as the famed Faberge eggs. She created relationships with others who had access to the art and purchased many pieces while she lived there.

Museum has gathered many of her jewelry pieces from various museums and created an exhibit to be enjoyed by the public until January 2018. The exhibit showcases individual pieces of fine jewelry from the Russian and French empires. With her discerning eye, she collected historical jewelry pieces as well as pieces with a more modern flair of the 1950s and 1960s. It also highlights the workmanship from Harry Winston, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. An important point to address is Post collected and wore the jewelry. This teaches us that if we intend to collect, we must also enjoy what we have collected. Gratefully, Post generously shared her collection of fine jewelry with several museums to be admired by many.

Don’t be a second-hand snob

Even the rich and famous happily add used items to their collections. While Post commissioned famous jewelry designers, such as Harry Winston and Cartier to create original jewelry for her, she also enjoyed collecting pieces with history. One of her notable pieces is the “Marie Louise” diadem (crown) originally given as a wedding gift from Napoleon to his bride, Marie Louise of Austria.

Collect with a purpose

After her divorce from Davies, Post purchased a stately 1920s mansion and wooded property in Washington, DC. She named it Hillwood. Her intent was to have it transformed into a museum after her death to show her fabulous collections of French and Russian art. The curators of the museum aptly call it, “Where fabulous lives.” The Hillwood Mansion and 16 | northsidewoman.com | august2017

‘Where Fabulous Lives’

Marjorie Merriwether Post wore what she collected.

Repurpose items to fit your lifestyle

Originally, the Marie Louise diadem had 79 emeralds. In 1953, Van Cleef & Arpels acquired it and sold off the emeralds and replaced them with turquoise, which was a very popular stone at that time. In the 1960s, Post borrowed the “re-purposed” crown and paired it with other diamond and turquoise jewelry by Harry Winston and Cartier. The occasion was a Red Cross ball in Palm Beach, Fla. In 1971, she purchased the diadem for the Smithsonian Institution. Post owned several brooches that could be used as pendants, which is still a popular versatile

Marjorie Merriwether Post, an heiress, philanthropist and avid collector of fine jewelry.

use of jewelry today. My favorite versatile piece in the collection was a crown that is an example of floral jewelry that was popular in the mid-19th Century. Many of its flowers are set on springs to tremble with each movement of the head. Some of the sprays can be detached and worn separately as brooches. Love the versatility! It was previously owned by the Royal House of Saxony. Her husband, Joseph Davies, presented it to Post as a gift. Final tidbit about the heiress: Marjorie Merriweather Post was the original owner and builder of Mar-a-Lago, a large estate in Palm Beach, Fla. At the time of her death, she donated it to the National Parks Service in the hopes that U.S. presidents would use it as a retreat or a Winter White House. For security and budgetary reasons, the government did not use it in that capacity. It was returned to the Post Foundation in 1981. Eventually, it was sold to Donald Trump in 1985. As the current POTUS, Trump stays there often and refers to it as his “Southern White House.” I guess the heiress finally got her way. ■

SCOTT HUTCHISON

By CANDY WAYLOCK

What are your thoughts on North Fulton’s transition from a sleepy Atlanta suburb to a business hub?

candy@northsidewoman.com August Northside Man: Scott Hutchison; partner in Wilson Hutchison Realty, LLC; owner of Southeastern Traffic Supply, Inc. City of residence: Sandy Springs Hometown: Alpharetta/Milton Education: University of Georgia (2003); Bachelor of Business Administration / Real Estate Family: Wife, Lindsey; daughters Peyton (5), Camilla (2); son Barrett (9 months) Community Connections: Board of directors for the Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors; board of directors for the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia; board of directors for Shoot For All Better supporting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta; board of directors for the Renegades Forever Foundation; chairman of the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce (2017); co-chair of Brokerfest supporting the Dana G. Smith Foundation (2017); Atlanta Renegades Rugby Football Club (coach)

How did your interest in real estate begin?

Honestly, I always thought that I would follow my father’s career into the commercial roofing sector. But while attending UGA, I did an internship in real estate and became fascinated with the commercial real estate market, complexity of deals, potential size of deals, and meeting new people every day. I worked for my partner, Tom Wilson, until we created our new firm, Wilson Hutchison Realty in 2008. Since then, we have grown from our home base in Alpharetta to actively serving most areas of North Georgia.

Growing up in Alpharetta off of McFarland Road, it was tough to see so many houses, golf courses and buildings being built around my home. After I went to college, I realized that growth is inevitable, but controlled growth is the way to go. I can’t give enough credit to Alpharetta’s Mayor David Belle Isle and his City Council as to how they not only promoted and embraced the growth of the City of Alpharetta but also showed there is a location and time for each type of development. Overall, it’s been an amazing transformation to watch and now be a part of while handling commercial real estate.

What are some of the challenges of growth, and the solutions?

Obviously, traffic is one of everyone’s main concerns. I believe that the MUP (mixed-use project) and City Center approaches are working beautifully. They allow people to live in close proximity to most of life’s necessities, or easily park and access those needs. I understand the constant need for more housing as the population continues to grow. The community leaders seem to control it more now by restricting massive track housing and encouraging more developments that the community embraces with larger green areas, upscale designs, and/or improvements for the community.

Outside the “office,” how important is community involvement?

Giving back to the community is something my wife and I have always held high on our list of priorities. Whether we help sponsor/coach kids sports teams, helping to run

a fundraiser for CHOA or being a part of the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce, each activity has its own impact on the community, and we love seeing the outcomes and benefits of being a part of them.

In your free time, where will find you?

I am a die-hard RUGBY nut. All of my best friends are from all around the world, and I’ve met each of them by either playing or coaching rugby. I continue to play in tournaments whenever possible and hope to do so as long as my body holds up. Otherwise, my wife and I enjoy traveling with the kids to locations around the world and exposing them to different cultures, foods, and people. ■

Key to Roasters’ success tied to family atmosphere By CANDY WAYLOCK

candy@northsidewoman.com

O

n the ever-growing list of dining options on the Northside, Roasters restaurant has survived – and thrived – for nearly 30 years by offering customers a consistent menu of homemade food and exceptional service. “We have a very loyal following of customers that we know, and know what they want as soon as they sit down,” said Steven Leslie, president and founder of Roasters. “They become part of our family just like my staff.” Leslie, who lives in Milton, opened the first Roasters location in Lenox mall in 1989, followed by a Sandy Springs location in 2004 and the third restaurant in Alpharetta off Windward Parkway in 2008. Many of the menu items have remained the same since opening day, focused primarily around the big three: rotisserie chicken, barbecue baby back ribs and chicken fingers. But if those choices don’t tempt you, Roasters also has fish tacos, meat loaf and beef brisket on its extensive menu. New additions over the years include 15 new sides and salads to round out the menu, including sweet potato souffle, fried green tomatoes and cornbread stuffing. “We are always trying to improve our recipes and quality,” Leslie said. “[But] we have some signature soups that could never go away – white chicken chili and our black bean soup.” Leslie realized early on the need to have a three-pronged approach for a restaurant to succeed in an industry with a high failure rate. “[Our success depends on] a casual home-style concept, consistent service and food quality at a reasonable value,” Leslie explained. “You have to have all three because I did open locations that did not work out because [elements were missing].” At the end of the day, he said the staff strives to treat every guest as if they were coming over to their own homes for dinner. Leslie’s background runs deep in the food business, starting as a 14-year-old making pizzas at a restaurant in Sandy Springs. From there, he trained under “very good chefs” throughout high school, learning the ins and outs of running a successful restaurant. “The food industry is in my blood,” said Leslie, who went on to management with Houlihans, Fuddruckers and Hooters, before setting off on his own with Roasters. Leslie is the president of the Roasters chain, but also maintains direct control of all daily operations to ensure the quality is maintained across all three locations. Equally important to him is involvement with many of the local high schools and community groups. “We have been a big supporter of Cambridge, Milton and Alpharetta high school sports programs,” Leslie said. “We also have partner nights with a lot of middle and elementary schools where we donate a percentage of sales back to the PTA.” “I strongly believe you have to give back to the community that supports you.” Looking forward, Leslie said he currently has three very successful locations but is not opposed to expanding if the right opportunity is there. “I will only open another Roasters if I think it is a great location,” Leslie said. “We should be around for another 25 years at least.” ■

Do-It-Yourself workshop combines online trends, creativity

Customers choose a project that is popular on Pinterest, including seasonal selections like string art, quote pallet or vision board.

By KATHLEEN STURGEON

M

illions of people use social media website, Pinterest, daily to explore art projects, find fashion tips or collect recipe ideas. While many of these people rarely take action on such ideas, those near Forsyth County can soon capitalize on their creativity. Frustrated by seeing the multitude of ideas without having a location to complete them, Brooke Roe came up with a solution. She opened the first Pinspiration store in Arizona two years ago to give customers a place to make similar projects they see on the website. It was so successful, Roe’s sister, Tiffany Frick, 22, moved to Georgia last year and opened the second location June 9 in Vickery Village, 5806 N. Vickery St. Pinspiration takes trending projects on Pinterest and puts together do-it-yourself kits for instore completion. Customers are able to choose an option and receive a kit, including a tutorial, sample and all materials needed. At any one time, roughly 60 projects are offered and vary from string art, custom signs and etched glass drinkware. “We've eliminated the need to sign up for a class,” Roe said. "Much like at a restaurant, our patrons select a project 'order,’ sit at a table with their friends and enjoy creating different types of projects together. We love seeing how our customers customize and personalize their creations and they love that we’re constantly changing our

project menus.” Aside from the kits, the business offers a private splatter room, parties for special events and summer camps for children. After a visit to Georgia, Roe fell in love with Vickery Village. She was enamored by the energy of the center and the strong sense of community in Cumming. Atlanta is a hotbed for the DIY industry and Roe knew Vickery was the perfect fit for Pinspiration. Now that this location is open, the company is launching franchise opportunities in other markets. In the first weekend after opening, Brooke Roe, owner and founder of Pinspiration. Frick said she saw a good response. “I thought Sundays were going to be slow here, but we were packed,” Frick said. “There’s been a large amount of people who come in to check out what it’s about.” All the preparation has paid off, Roe said, as they are “overwhelmed by the enthusiasm” from customers. They are already booking corporate holiday parties and have been busy hosting ladies nights, birthday parties and bridal showers. They are planning on rolling out a parents night out option in the near future where parents can drop their kids off for some crafty fun while mom and dad enjoy a date night with Pinspiration or elsewhere in Vickery. “I never would have thought it’d be this much work,” Frick said. “When we started the Arizona store, I didn’t do any of the background work. I never thought I’d be doing this, but it’s my dream job.” And now she gets to share her enthusiasm with the customers in Cumming. “Even if you’re not crafty, you can come in here,” Flick said. “All the supplies are here, there’s no mess for you to clean up and all the projects can be customized. We make it so easy for you.” ■ Visit pinspiration.com to learn more about the company.

The menu features meat from local meat processor and distributor Revere Meat Co. ranging from a prime filet mignon, aged 35 days to a dry aged bone-in NY strip, aged 60 days. We had the pleasure of trying the prime 6oz filet and the Delmonico ribeye. Both were fantastic, along with the accompanying sides of smoked gouda mac n' cheese and heirloom baby carrots. Ways to teach kids how to save money

S BOMBAY BRASSERIE

is slightly of hidden on Mansell Road in Roswell. I have never had Indian food and was surprised to find it so yummy. I ordered off the regular menu, but there was a huge buffet available that also looked delicious. I ordered the chicken vindaloo, a spicy chicken dish with potato curry. The garlic Naan that was served was my favorite. Stop by sometime and try it. aving doesn’t come naturally to most of us. When you’re young, it’s hard to grasp the real value of money. Saving is one of life’s most important skills to master. If you’re a parent of a small child or teenager, here are some ideas to get you started. The most important thing at the beginning is to make saving fun. Plus, the earlier you start teaching your children to save money, the better off they’ll be. Even toddlers can do it, but you have to teach this concept in a way they’ll understand. Then, as your children grow, you can introduce more sophisticated saving strategies.

1. Open a savings account

When your child is old enough to understand the concept of interest, you can look for savings accounts that earn interest.

2. Make a savings goal chart

Once you know what your child wants to save for, figure out how many weeks it will take, and make a chart.

KE

s&

5

w o tips f o r men

You can represent each week with a box and your child can put a sticker in that box once the money from that week’s allowance is set aside.

3. Look for good deals with your children

One of the keys to saving money is looking for deals on purchases. Together, you can compare prices on different websites and stores before purchasing items.

4. Play games

There are a number of games available to teach financial concepts to children. Monopoly and The Game of Life, for example, can teach money management skills as well as the importance of planning ahead.

5. Help your child prioritize

Have your child write out a wish list of things they want to spend money on and prioritize that list. Ask your child to think long-term as well. How about a nice laptop for college, a graduation trip to Europe, or even the down payment for a house someday? Then, have your child allocate an amount of their allowance, or “income,” to each goal. These are the beginnings of a financial plan and this type of thinking will serve your child well in the long run. Teaching your children how to save is an important step to prepare them for financial responsibility and a secure future. But it won’t go very far if you don’t “practice what you preach” and save for the future yourself. Whether we like it or not, most of us take after our parents and emulate the habits we observed in them during childhood. In other words, you need to act how you want your children to act when they grow up. ■ Source: www.moneycrashers.com

Local tennis team captures state title

A

team composed primarily of ladies from North Fulton was crowned the state USTA Tennis champions in June and will move on to regional play in Alabama this month. Coached by Heidi Ramaekers, the team has played together for the past several years and has qualified for the state championship in three of the past four years. "This group of ladies is a very special group,” Ramaekers said. “They executed what we work on each week on the court, and that is why they are the state champs. Their work ethic, determination and never-quit attitude is what separates them from the rest. Every one of these ladies grinds it out until they get the job done!" The past year took on a special significance for the team with the passing of one team member's daughter last June. Julie Lyons, daughter of teammate Jo Lyons, passed away at the age of 26 from Rett Syndrome, a rare genetic mutation affecting brain development in girls. “Our team's first match of the state tournament was played on the first anniversary of Julie's passing,” noted Dawn Thatcher, a member of the tennis team. “Since Julie's favorite color was purple, we wore it in her honor.” Other members of the state champion team include Kelly Goldberg, Annie Von Hillebrandt, Jan Perkins, Dee Campbell, Sally McKenzie, Lori Asbury, Kim Carney, Carmen Olmeda, Kris McCorstin, Kathy Travis, Kelly Finley, Vicky Boerema and Kristen Dunlop. ■

A ticking time bomb on your pets 26 | northsidewoman.com | august2017

any people do not realize that fleas and ticks are more than a mild inconvenience – these pests can carry life challenging diseases to both you and your pets. Bubonic and pneumonic plague are transmitted by fleas to both people and pets, and the outcome can be fatal. The cause of Cat Scratch Fever is likewise a flea-borne disease of man and animals. Ticks have the potential of transmitting even more diseases to man and animals. Most people are familiar with the devastation of Lyme disease in humans and pets. Other organisms in this family, such as, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, anaplasma and numerous species of Erhlichea are also tick transmitted to humans and animals. Tick populations can transmit many of these agents within themselves and cause the disease to persist in the environment. Ticks carry diseases which also solely affect our pets. Tick paralysis is a condition caused in dogs by feeding of a pregnant female tick and is fortunately reversible. Not so for cytauxzoon, a highly fatal disease in cats carried by ticks. Most of us pet parents have had times in the past where we have regarded external parasites as simply a pesky nuisance for our animal kids. In the late ‘70s when I took my first job in a veterinary clinic, we sprayed, dipped and slathered our pets with very toxic and poorly effective insecticides in an effort to get rid of these creatures. Fortunately, we have better and certainly safer alternatives today. Nothing on the market currently approaches the risk of older products. Unfortunately, like bacteria, insects can develop

resistance to products, and many products over time have become less effective. As a result, the number of products on the market is virtually mind blowing. Veterinary advice in seeking the best alternative for your individual situation is helpful in selecting from such a myriad of options. While mitigation and prevention of parasites is the best protection for your pet, there are going to be times when a persistent tick breaks the barrier and hitches a ride on your pet. In those times, safe, prompt removal is the best step. Ticks can transmit disease in less than 24 hours to your pet. To remove a tick, use pointed tweezers and grab ahold of the tick as close to your pet’s skin without pinching the skin. Always wear protective gloves when removing or handling ticks. Using steady pressure, pull the tick out using a straight motion. Avoid twisting, squeezing or crushing the tick. After removal, check to make sure the head and mouth of the tick is gone. Dispose of the tick, and disinfect the skin area where the tick was attached. If your pet exhibits any unusual behavior in the days following the tick removal, take your pet to your veterinarian for a checkup. ■

Back to school fun facts Yance Pet of the month M I By KAY PASCHAL

Peachtree Park Prep Owner

t’s a funny thing about “facts” ~~ they can be manipulated by the user to make a point sound good or sound not so good! For instance…..how would you use the “fact” that by eating 8 grams (approximately 2 bars) of chocolate has been shown to boost brain power due to the Flavanols found in cocoa…..???? Here are some more FUN Back to Schools FACTS: • $7.7 billion was spent in the United States last year for back to school clothing. • More than 120 billion Crayola brand crayons alone have been sold since 1903-enough to circle the Earth 200 times! By the age of 10, the average child will have worn down approximately 730 crayons! • Approximately 480,000 yellow school buses will carry 25 million children to/from school daily. • 41% of college students still bring home laundry for mom to do…… • Almost half of U.S. schools have reduced

• •

or eliminated recess while 100% of U.S. schools have internet access, up from 50% with internet access in 1995. The average classroom pencil can write approximately 45,000 words and can write just as well upside down, in zero gravity, or under water as at the school desk. Children drink an average of 31 gallons of milk per year. Students who regularly eat breakfast scored 4.6 points higher on IQ tests than students skipping breakfast due not only to food fueling the brain but also the interactions that occur in communicating with others at breakfast as well as the physical elements of eating re-energizing brain synapses. • Only 30% of parents follow the advice of their pediatrician all the time. Advice on discipline is the #1 ignored advice followed by advice on sleep practices and TV time. • There are approximately 7.2 million teachers serving 78 million students (pre-k through college) in the U.S. with the government spending an average of $10,489 per student annually. Fact or fiction ~~ it’s time to return to SCHOOL! “Loving to Learn!” ■

eet Yance, a 1-year old yellow lab looking for his forever home. He is currently being fostered until his new family is found, and his foster mom has only good things to report! Yance is smart and sweet, crate trained and gets along with other dogs and especially kids. Cats on the other hand are too interesting not to chase, but Yance should quickly learn his boundaries with cats. He is housebroken, walks well on a leash and loves riding in the car. Minimally invasive options in gynecologic medicine

T

he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga and Dr. Annie Kim of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day procedures that require no downtime. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fastgrowing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

HyperSensitive Teeth & Treatment By DAVID REMALEY, DDS Roswell Dental Care

I

s the taste of ice cream or a sip of hot coffee sometimes a painful experience for you? Does brushing or flossing make you wince occasionally? If so, you may have sensitive teeth. Possible causes include: • Tooth decay (cavities) • Fractured teeth • Worn fillings • Gum disease • Worn tooth enamel • Exposed tooth root In healthy teeth, a layer of enamel protects the crowns of your teeth—the part above the gum line. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin. Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity. Sensitive teeth can be treated. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sensitivity. Your dentist may suggest one of a variety of treatments: Desensitizing toothpaste. This

contains compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve, and usually requires several applications before the sensitivity is reduced. REMALEY Fluoride gel. An in-office technique which strengthens tooth enamel and reduces the transmission of sensations. A crown, inlay or bonding. These may be used to correct a flaw or decay that results in sensitivity. Surgical gum graft. If gum tissue has been lost from the root, this will protect the root and reduce sensitivity. Root canal. If sensitivity is severe and persistent and cannot be treated by other means, your dentist may recommend this treatment to eliminate the problem. Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive-tooth pain. Roswell Dental Care can answer any questions about your daily oral hygiene routine or concerns about tooth sensitivity. Regular dental cleanings and checkups can treat minor dental issues and prevent further damage to your teeth. We always welcome new patients. ealth and confidence. Two words we often hear in this age of millennials. Though we all may not be millennials, we still desire to achieve our optimal levels in both health and confidence. For some, when we have reached our peak of oral health, we gain confidence wherever we go with the statement of our bold beautiful smiles. For others, we may gain confidence in the simplest acts of life, such as freedom to eat our favorite foods free of pain. Dr. George Dinulescu and Dr. Cesar Tapia both graduates of University of Colorado, recently launched ConfiDenT, LLC, their new dental practice in

Alpharetta. Their desire is to help all striving to achieve these goals of oral health and confidence, through the utmost in dental technology paired with a caring and welcoming dental team. Originally from Romania, Dr. George is licensed to practice dentistry in both the European Union and the United States. Dr. Cesar, originally from Peru received the Humanitarian Award for his outstanding care, veracity, and integrity towards his patients. rthodontic treatment today is about faces not just braces. Consequently, facial esthetics dictates the proper timing for treatment. While treatment can contribute to the physical and psychological development of patients young and old, some patients require early intervention. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial visit to an orthodontist at age 7 for this reason. Most patients do not need early treatment, but if necessary, amazing improvements in facial esthetics and function can be accomplished. The common orthodontic problems that can be treated in between 7 and 9 years old include underbites and severe overbites as well as patients with crossbites and openbites. These conditions are considered muscular skeletal problems and are best addressed in the mixed dentition when the permanent front teeth are erupting. These treatments are referred to as dentofacial orthopedics because we are working with the bones of the face and not just the teeth. The majority of patients benefit from a single treatment during adolescence, as the last few primary teeth are lost and the second molars

erupt. The exact age varies, but most patients are treated during the middle school years and can be completed by high school. Of course, sometimes the teeth are slow JORDAN to erupt and this can delay the completion of treatment. For this reason, starting treatment too early can prolong treatment duration and result in orthodontic burnout for the patients. Patient cooperation is important in keeping the treatments short in duration and efficient. Interestingly, girl’s teeth erupt earlier than boys of the same age. Teenagers are usually in a rapid growth phase during this period. As a result, dramatic results can be achieved with improved facial esthetics and function. For example, the smile can be made wider, the lower jaw can be advanced, or a gummy smile can be eliminated. A smile analysis dictates in what direction the teeth and jaws should be moved. These changes can be life altering for some patients during the teen years. Of course, adults want to look good too, and orthodontic treatment for adults is more popular than ever!

ime to get braces?

Invisalign, clear braces, and improvements in surgical techniques make having a fantastic smile easier too. The bulky braces and heavy forces of yesteryear are a thing of the past. Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that move the teeth. Each aligner moves the teeth a quarter of a millimeter and is worn for about two weeks. The number of aligners is dictated by how crowded or spaced out your teeth are at the beginning. Clear or ceramic braces combined with new superelastic memory wires have made traditional orthodontic treatment more esthetic and more efficient and comfortable . The teeth move a little every day and the forces on the teeth are very light. For more dramatic changes, orthognathic surgery can totally transform ones appearance if necessary. Adults who desire improved facial esthetics can benefit from orthodontics combined with surgery to correct facial imbalances. In this situation, the braces are placed on the teeth for about six months prior to surgery and remain on the teeth for a few months after the procedure. So the best time to get treatment is when you or your child is ready to improve that smile! It’s about faces not just braces. ■

hat if you or an older adult in your life could slow or even reverse the decline typically associated with aging? Residents at Atria Senior Living’s five Atlanta-area communities are doing just that through Better This Year, Atria’s forward-thinking approach to greater well-being. According to research conducted by Dr. Henry Lodge, coauthor of The New York Times bestseller Younger Next Year: The New Science of Aging, a surprising 70 percent of how successfully we age is determined by four key lifestyle choices. Exercise – Exercise triggers the body’s natural repair processes and the benefits are dramatic. Connection – People who are part of a caring community live longer than those who are isolated and lonely. Nutrition – Having consistent access to nourishing, appetizing food is important to staying healthy longer. Goals – Setting short- and long-term goals to challenge oneself promotes a sense of purpose. Skin Cancer Prevention: Beyond Sunscreen By DR. BRENT TAYLOR Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery

W

hen enjoying time outdoors, there is still no substitute for sunscreen, clothing, umbrellas and shade for preventing future skin cancers. However, a number of medicines and one vaccine have attracted attention because of the possibility that they decrease the number of skin cancers that someone can expect to develop. From vitamin B3 to a fern extract called P. leucotomos, the future is looking brighter. Nicotinamide, also known as niacinamide, has strong evidence for being able to decrease the number of actinic keratoses (precancers) and squamous cell carcinomas in high risk patients. In a 2015 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 386 patients who had at least two skin cancers in the previous five years took either nicotinamide 500mg two times per day or placebo for 12 months. The group taking nicotinamide developed 23% fewer non-melanoma skin cancers than the placebo group. More recently, a 2017 study in the International Journal of Cancer analyzed data about nicotinamide intake and skin cancer from the Nurses Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, two large databases following cohorts of individuals in an attempt to gather useful health information. This study agreed that nicotinamide intake was associated with a lower risk of squamous

cell carcinoma, but the study did raise the question of whether we fully know the effects of nicotinamide on basal cell carcinoma or melanoma. Larger, longer-term studies would be helpful, but the current evidence is TAYLOR robust enough to suggest that someone with a strong history of precancers called actinic keratoses or of squamous cell carcinomas might consider taking nicotinamide 500mg two times per day. Importantly, nicotinamide must not be confused with niacin, a close cousin that causes flushing and other side-effects. Nicotinamide is also known as niacinamide. Niacin is also known as nicotinic acid. Word soup! Is there help for basal cell carcinoma? A “metaanalysis,” which is a study that pools and analyzes all the results of lots of smaller studies was published in 2016 looking at aspirin and other NSAIDS (for example, ibuprofen) and found that use of one of these medicines was associated with about a 10% lower risk of basal cell carcinoma. Even more intriguing, vaccination against the human papilloma virus (HPV) may decrease the number of cancers that one develops. The Gardasil vaccine is indicated for prevention of genital warts and cervical cancer and is typically administered to young females, but the HPV virus comes in many

variations and types, and theoretically it would not be surprising if vaccination against a few of these viruses protected against the effects of other HPV strains. Use of this vaccine in an adult to prevent skin cancer would be offlabel and experimental. However, two patients reported on in a recent publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) were developing an average of 10 skin cancers per year that dropped to an average of 3 to 4 skin cancers per year after vaccination. There is not time to discuss every possibility, but a fern called Polypodium leucotomos appears to decrease the risk of UV damage and sunburn when taken by mouth in the form of the supplement Heliocare. Some dermatologists advocate its use in addition to sun screen when someone will find themselves suddenly thrust into a very sunny or tropical environment such as during a sunny vacation. As always, talk with your dermatologist before starting any new medicine or supplement. And, when thinking about new and exciting studies, one important caveat to keep in mind is the possibility of “publication bias.” This is the general rule that exciting studies with intriguing results tend to get published and negative studies without exciting findings tend to get rejected. Publication bias matters because its effect is to allow publication of studies whose results are not real but rather happened by chance. Careful consideration to evidence quality must always be given before embarking on a new therapy. ■

A

s an adult, it’s difficult to imagine wearing metal brackets and wires for months, or possibly years, to address your problems. Fortunately, for many individuals there is an alternative to traditional metal braces. Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made PATEL series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You’ll CORBETT achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won't even know you're straightening your teeth. You may be surprised to know that the benefits of having properly aligned teeth extend far beyond a confident

smile. According to the American Dental Association, straightening your teeth can actually significantly affect your overall dental health. HEALTHIER TEETH AND GUMS Properly positioned teeth are easier to brush and floss than teeth that are crowded, crooked, or spaced too far apart. Properly aligned teeth can help gums fit more tightly around them, which can lead to better periodontal health. EASIER CLEANING With maintenance of good oral hygiene, the chance of having plaque retention, tooth decay, and periodontal disease can be reduced. The aligners are removable, so it’s easy to continue brushing and flossing your teeth the way you normally do. DECREASED RISK OF ABNORMAL WEAR Properly aligned teeth can be less stressful on the supporting jaw joints and alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems, and increased wear on the tooth enamel. Treatable cases include people who have gaps between their teeth, those with crowded or crooked teeth, as well as people who have an overbite, underbite, open bite, or crossbite. For those of you who desire a straighter smile and want to find out if Invisalign is a good option for you, please call 678-894-7926 and visit our website: www.HiTechSmiles.com. ■
