JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The Johns Creek City Council has been asked by staff to consider asking The District’s consultants to come up with an alternate plan for The District’s center core that was to have focused on a water feature using the existing creek. CH2M Hill was preparing a feasibility study when it ran into some severe constraints based on preserving the existing creek. They have come back asking for direction on whether to pursue it based on expected higher costs. So has The District — the

city’s plan for a new, vibrant city center — hit a bump in the road, or has it run into a ditch? The consensus from the city is it is closer to a bump in the road. The city has to decide, however, if it should look at alternatives to The District being designed around a water feature such as a canal or lake. “What we have done is take a step back,” said Assistant City Manager Eric Taylor, who

Celebrating Indian independence Schools opens year with fewer students, teachers at Johns Creek's Newtown Park Atlanta’s Indian community meets at Newtown Park for celebration By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The colors of the day Saturday, Aug. 15, at Johns Creek’s Newtown Park were orange, white and green, the colors of the Indian flag. The reason: to celebrate Aug. 15, the 69th anniversary
of Indian Independence Day, commemorating the nation’s independence from the British Empire. This was the first time the entire Atlanta Indian community decided to celebrate together in one place and host a huge celebration from 3 to 9 p.m. The Freedom Mela (Cel-
ebration) event was sponsored by several of Atlanta’s IndianAmerican organizations. India is composed of 29 states, each with its own language. Yet in 1947, all of these diverse cultures banded together to form one nation. This past weekend, American Indians gathered to celebrate their diversity and their unity with a nod to the United

Student numbers expected to increase through Labor Day By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The 2015-16 school year started for Fulton Schools with more than 2,500 students less than expected and more than 100 teachers still to hire to reach full strength.
During a meeting of the Fulton School Board on Aug. 12, Deputy Superintendent Rob Anderson noted the 100plus teacher vacancies are in the typical “hard to staff” areas of special education, foreign languages, and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). “We’ve [already] hired close to 800 teachers, 14 principals and 20 assistant principals,” said Anderson. “The remain-

ROSWELL, GA. — The K-9 officers of the Roswell Police Department received a cool gift July 31, when the staff of Atlanta Home Theater presented them with cooling vests and their officers with thermometers. Atlanta Home Theater owners Scott and Jennifer Ross and their operations team presented the vests to Roswell Police Chief Rusty Grant. The couple said they felt compelled to make a difference in the community when one of their team members was present when Roswell police officers rescued an overheated dog that was trapped inside a hot car. The team member witnessed the officer purchasing a temperature gauge with his own money. This team member shared the incident with the Atlanta Home Theater crew The decision was made to donate brand-new temperature gauges for all the day officers to determine the internal temperatures of vehicles in which dogs are trapped. In addition, Atlanta Home Theater opted to provide cooling vests, which will be used to sooth the working K-9 dogs and can be dispatched for cooling overheated dogs being rescued. The cooling vests are made to hold water and can be filled on-site. In addition, the Atlanta Home Theater team decided to purchase YETI coolers for those K-9 units to keep the vests cool all the time. These vests can also be used for overheated cats and even children, if needed. “It is a well-invested $2,000 for a

Man found sleeping in wrong home ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A Harris Commons Place resident had a rude awakening Aug. 6 after she found a strange man asleep in her living room. The victim said she was awakened by the snoring of the man, who was found passed out in the living room. When woken, the suspect was asked why he was in the house and he said he thought it was his home and the door was unlocked. He actually lives three doors down. Being neighborly, the victim declined to press charges.
Fool me twice, shame on me MILTON, Ga. — A Milton resident was the victim of two scams, costing him nearly $13,000. The victim told police Aug. 6 that he received a call from someone claiming to be with
the IRS and asking for money. The victim hung up, not believing the person. Later, the victim was called by the San Jose Police Department. The detective on the other end claimed the victim owed almost $9,000 to be paid to Chase Bank or he would be arrested. The victim believed the caller and sent off the check. After that, the victim received yet another call, this time from Madison, Georgia, police claiming the check he sent to California had not gone through and he would be arrested if he did not pay. So the victim went to a local CVS and got three money orders to send to the Madison police. He then called Chase Bank, which advised the initial $9,000 check had indeed gone through. All the calls were scams and the victim lost $12,950.
The incident happened Aug. 3 at the Golden Corral at North Point Drive. The victim told police he paid for his meal and left his wallet at the register. In the wallet was the cash. Speaking with the employee at the register, Quanna Lavette Milton, 41, of Atlanta, she said she saw the wallet and placed it beneath the counter for safekeeping. She said she never opened it. Surveillance video supports this; however, she can be seen at one point later handling something in that area. She denied taking anything. While investigating this incident, police discovered Milton had warrants for her arrest out of Douglas and Cobb counties

for forgery and theft. She was arrested on those charges.
Tax prepper accused of theft ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A tax preparer is under suspicion of stealing hundreds of dollars from customers. On Aug. 3, an Alpharetta victim told police his personal information was used to falsely file taxes. He said he filed his 2013 taxes with a Norcross company. He was told he would get $1,200 back. His tax preparer, Tristan Rodney Hazelton, 26, of Lawrenceville, asked him to meet in Feb.
2014 at a location away from Hazelton’s offices to receive his refund. When they met, Hazelton allegedly said he had placed the money in his own account and that, really, the refund was closer to $800. In August of this year, the victim was contacted by Gwinnett police who said Hazelton was under investigation for stealing refunds. The victim’s actual refund was supposed to be $2,500.

14-year-old wins Standard Club’s Men’s Championship Preston Topper shoots 10-under for three rounds of golf to win By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Preston Topper won the 2015 Standard Club’s Men’s Golf Championship in June, but he couldn’t buy the traditional first round of drinks at the club. You see, he’s only 14. He posted a spectacular 10-under score of 206 for three rounds (64, 70, 72) to win his club’s medal tournament. That opening round of 64 is the second-lowest score ever posted at the 148-year-old club since it moved to Johns Creek. The win made Preston the Standard Club’s youngest champion and he may just be the youngest private-club men’s champion anywhere ever (the Internet is silent on golf club champions). Nevertheless, it is quite an achievement. Asked what he did to win, Preston was laconic but accurate. “I just played good, that’s all,” he said. Then he added, “I have played around 40 rounds of 18 holes in the 60s [at the Standard Club]. Most of the time I shoot in the 60s, but I should because this is my home golf course.” His father, Ron Topper, a Laurel Springs resident, takes the achievement in stride. “He almost won it last year at 13. He came in third,” Topper said, not without out a trace of paternal pride. Topper has reason to be proud. Preston at 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds, is rated by the Junior Golf Scoreboard among the top 20 young golfers in the world, and he’s second in Georgia for his age group. Two years ago, he was chosen to play in the U.S. Kids Golf Ryder Cup match against an International junior team at the famed Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. He and his partner were low medalists during the competition where they shot 66 and led the U.S.
team to victory. Topper said his son first picked up a golf club at the ripe old age of 2. By the time he was 4, Preston was playing competitive golf in the 6-andunder class. So it is no wonder he literally cannot recall a time when he did not play golf. He is enrolled at William & Reed Academy, which emphasizes academics while specializing in accommodating young athlete’s schedules. “It’s a good school with good teachers,” he said.
Preston Topper holds the trophy for taking the Standard Club’s Men’s Championship. So Preston’s day is school from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Then he is off to the Standard Club to work on his golf game. “I’ll come to the club and chip a little and putt a little. And then I’ll go play.” He said he prefers driving the ball to all other aspects of the game. “That’s my favorite part. But golf, it’s all in your head really,” he said. “And repetition,” his father added. And when he’s done with his round of golf? “I’ll either go fishing or putt a little more.” Fishing is where he has just come from before his 10 a.m. interview. Preston wasn’t asked if he can ever remember not fishing, but the guess is no. “He’s a fishing guru,” his dad said. Preston allows that he also hangs out with friends and plays video games – when it’s cold outside. He definitely wants to go to college and his plan, not surprisingly, is to play collegiate golf. Officially he would consider Georgia, Alabama or Auburn, but really his preference is Georgia. He likes the way Georgia turns out PGA players and he has met the coaches there. What does he like best?
HATCHER HURD/STAFF
Preston Topper works on all facets of his golf game just about every day. Here he practices getting out of the sand trap, although on the course he doesn’t spend much time in the bunkers. “Everything. There’s nothing not to like at Georgia – the coaches, the facilities, all of it. Coach [Chris] Haack really knows how to get players ready.” So there you have it. He will be a Bulldog if Georgia will have him. One imagines the UGA coaches are drooling. His dad knows that the PGA is what Preston thinks about, but he is realistic. “He works on golf like it’s his job. And it’s a 40-hour week. But the chances of the PGA are always slim. So he is going work on school too,” Topper said. “He’s a smart kid. He says he would like to be a lawyer, he loves to debate.” So this 14-year-old gazing into the future is asked what is
his biggest dream? “Probably to win the Masters.” Big surprise there, eh?

Alpharetta approves new conference center, hotel Comes with hotel tax increase By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — In a 5-2 vote, the Alpharetta City Council approved a new public-private partnership with Avalon owners North American Properties for a new hotel and conference center. They also approved a corresponding hotel tax increase to help pay for the venture. The vote came at their Aug. 10 meeting. “This is going to have an enormous impact on Alpharetta,” said Jim Stormont, of Stormont Hospitality Group, the developers of the hotel and conference center. He predicted the hotel could be open as soon as 28 months from that night — with an opening in the fall of 2017. The deal gives Alpharetta what city officials have asked for - a conference center that can act as a regional draw and meet the needs of a growing city. The $107 million complex at the Avalon development includes a grand “Hotel Avalon” - to be part of the Marriott Autograph series of hotels — and

hotel-motel tax levied in the city to pay for nearly $25 million of the project. The developers would pick up the rest. Councilmember D.C. Aiken was not impressed by the prospect of using the tax increase to pay for the bond, claiming another economic downturn could harm the city’s ability to make back its money. “This is not risk-free,” said Aiken. “Are we in any liability over the next five years? The
answer is yes.” However, he also had criticism over bond money being issued for such a project without going to the public for a referendum. “If it is such a great idea… why not put it to a vote with the people?” he asked. “If it is such a great thing, it should be fine.” Jim Gilvin was the only other councilmember to join Aiken in his dissent of the proposal. Their fellow councilmember,

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A portion of Milton Avenue in downtown Alpharetta was closed for much of the day Tuesday, Aug. 11, after a suspected drunk driver hit a utility pole. According to city officials, the incident happened about 5 a.m. The suspect, identified as a 21-year-old Woodstock woman, was on her way to work. She lost control of her Honda Accord and struck the power pole, causing the pole and live power lines to fall
over the road. She was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Milton Avenue was closed for much of the day west of Roswell / Canton Street near the former Milton High School campus as utility crews repaired the damage. City officials say the woman smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking several beers before she drove. The road was reopened about 4 p.m. —Jonathan Copsey

City, Roswell Rotary to host Sept. 11 tribute By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — To honor those killed and injured during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the City of Roswell and the Roswell Rotary Club will host a tribute. The 9/11 Tribute will take place at 8:30 a.m. at the Mike Gann 9/11 Memorial, located near the lake in Roswell Area Park, 10495 Woodstock Road, where a small plaque makes note of Gann, a Roswell resident and victim of the attacks. The 9/11 attacks were the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil in U.S. history. The attacks killed 2,977 people, including 343 firefighters and 72 police officers who had rushed to the scene to help people. Most of the victims were civilians “There is evil in this world,” said Sen. John Albers, co-chair of the Roswell tribute. “People have made sacrifices. How do we honor them for generations to come?” One way to honor them is to remember their sacrifices annually. In Roswell, Walt Woliver has taken this charge, heading up the community’s efforts for 12 of the past 14 years. He said he started the

The 100-plus teacher vacancies represent less than two percent of the total teaching force, noted school officials, who point to a nearly 99 percent staffing level on day one. “We are continuing to grow and working hard to make sure we have the right people in the right seats in our organization,” said Anderson. This year, Fulton has increased its teacher pay across the board and is providing sign-on bonuses to teachers in high-demand fields as it positions itself to be competitive with other metro systems. Although student enrollment after the third day of school is more than 2,500 students short of projections, school officials note numbers historically start low in the first week and gradually build to full enrollment by the 20th day.

Sept. 11 is about remembering the police, firefighters, emergency medical service and civilians who died,” he said. Woliver has always organized the event at the Faces of War Memorial behind Roswell City Hall. The event, he said, has traditionally been small, with about 100 people attending. For a few years, the city did not have any ceremony marking the day, now called “Patriot Day.” The 2015 Sept. 11 memorial will take place at the flagpole near the lake at Roswell Area Park. This year, the ceremony will feature the Roswell Fire and Police Honor Guard, the U.S. The third-day count was 93,690 students. The enrollment projection for the year is 96,229. “The [numbers] are expected to rise to more than 96,000 over the next few weeks as families accustomed to starting after Labor Day enroll their children in school,” said Susan Hale, communications manager for Fulton Schools. Students across the system also returned to renovated school buildings, as the Capital Programs department spent the summer putting tax dollars to work. Using proceeds from the one-cent Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, three new schools opened, renovations were completed at 14 schools, four schools were painted, 23 gym floors were refinished, 33 elementary school playgrounds were renovated and 37 portable classrooms were permanently removed. Fulton recently revived the eSPLOST link on its website (www.fultonschools.org) to allow parents to track the progress of capital programs at their schools and across the system. On the transportation side, Deputy Superintendent Patrick Burke said bus schedule efficiency continues to improve each day. He noted delays in the first days are attributed

School boards have no sympathy for grandparents If you have stopped to read in this space before, you should know I have long railed against this new practice of starting school a month before Labor Day. It robs our children of the pleasures and wonders of an unadulterated summer vacation. It gives children that most precious commodity – and the one most squandered by the young – time. But what I have not so far expounded upon – but will do so presently – is how unfair it is for those other people at the other end of the spectrum. I’m talking about all those grandparents who also look forward to the end of school so their grandchildren can come for a visit. The best part of my summers was the exciting two-day car trip from central Texas to Georgia to my grandparents’ house. That was marvelous in its own right. Why, I would actually stand in five different states (and pee in three of them ). These were things I
could brag about. The shoe is on the other foot now. It’s me who looks forward to my grandsons’ summer hiatus from lower education so they can come spend time with me. Only I find I must act quickly to find a place on their dance card. It doesn’t help that their mother is like the program director of a cruise ship. “Well, this week they have play dates with Frick and then with Frack. And then I have to take them shopping because none of their summer clothes fit. Yes I could work you in, how does next Thursday afternoon sound?” I am informed. I thought now that they are a little older, they might like to take a few field trips with their sainted Papa. Oh, I know I am no longer the fount of all wisdom they thought I was when multiplication was a mystery to them and addition and subtraction a skill still barely mastered. They would ask me questions to the point of exhaustion – like why

Take the time to say ‘thank you’
Conservation buffers should not be mandated Conservation Subdivisions should be an incentivized option only. Suburbia now covers over half of Milton. Numerous farms have fallen. Our lifestyle was stolen from us through no fault of our own. We should be allowed to be made whole elsewhere and make the most off of our property as others have. Violating the 14th Amendment will bring lawsuits. Council passed “The Rural View Shed” stating property cannot be disturbed 40 feet in. Affected residents weren’t consulted. Some question the legality. No more land grabs. Remaining land owners will decide what comes. If you want us to stay, support equality and our voice. Image without substance is a façade. Our lifestyle is not a carnival attraction. Don’t treat us like one. Tim Enloe, Milton
When was the last time you took a moment to thank someone? When was the last time you said that to a stranger who were simply doing his job? I was speaking with a member of the community after a meeting one night and we somehow got on the subject of how people don’t say “thank you” anymore. Perhaps people are simply too preoccupied with their own lives or thoughts to take the time. It’s also possible people are simply too hard to please. I’m sure many customers could be classified as “high maintenance.” I’m looking at you, Starbucks lady in front of me, who wants a venti chai tea latte, 180 degrees, seven pumps chai syrup, no foam, double cupped, no sleeve,

Maybe take an afternoon and build a kite to fly. Trips to the beach were always filled with nature’s wonders. Now that they are older, it would be even more fun. But the dad-burn school board, in cahoots with the state educators, has decided it would be better to cut short summer vacation and sprinkle the days out in drips and drabs. Those short rations don’t give a grandparent a fighting chance.
nonfat milk. The barista might only do half that and you wouldn’t notice. Work is work, no matter what you are doing. Be it serving or being a professional. For me, when I screw something up, I have a whole community yelling at me. But when I do well? More often than not, it’s silence. Ditto goes for servers – when was the last time you asked for a manager at a restaurant and thanked them and the server for their work? The last time I did this, the server got a hunted look in her eyes. I can imagine the only time people ask for a manager is to complain. People thrive on positive reinforcement. Sometimes it can be all they need to get through the day.
There’s baseball practice (remember when it was a spring sport?) and football to deal with. Two more thieves of time, although they do suffer us to go to the games. But where is the time alone with them? Don’t they know how much we would spoil them? Well, maybe that’s the wrong tack. They are already about as spoiled as a garbage scow at the equator. They look upon being spoiled as a right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. I think it is somewhere between “No State shall Coin Money” and “shall not pass any Bill of Attainder.” Spoilage is a grandparent’s privilege anyway. If you can’t spoil the grandkids, what’s the point of having children? But eight weeks is a short summer vacation for the average youngster to cram in a week at camp, an ungodly spate of birthday parties and of course the “family” vacation that does not include us. Then there are all kinds of other distractions – ice cream
When I was shopping around for engagement and wedding rings — not to mention replacement arms and legs for the appendages those rings cost— I settled on Shane Co. I knew their ads and there was one close by my office. It turns out they offer a list of partners who service weddings — caterers, florists, venues, and so on. We ended up using this list for several of our services in our wedding. After the wedding, we visited Shane Co. and mentioned this to the employees. They looked at us in shock — no one ever tells them they used the list! We started thanking them (and the company) for the help they gave us and the employees were falling over themselves thanking us for
parties, overnights, trips with other families, no less – and the eight weeks are spent. So Papa and Mimi are like the kids next door with their noses poking through the fence, staring at the party to which they were not invited. If we could but have a small slice of August, say just two more weeks, then how could they deny us a little “quality time” with the boys? And as middle schoolers, the boys are really quite useful now. I could get one of them to teach me how to use this stupid smartphone (contradiction in terms intended), Then maybe I could text the little varmints, or Facebook’em. But not tweet. I never tweet. (If you tweet doesn’t that make you a twit?) But I know what they would say if I asked for help with all this “social” media. They’d say, “Just think about that for a while and see if you can find the answer.” Reap what you sow.

mentioning it. We later even went online and left reviews. The takeaway from this story is how pleased those Shane Co. people were that anyone sincerely thanked them for their service. Not simply a polite “thanks,” but heartfelt appreciation. If you are satisfied with the service you receive, thank the people who served you. It’s not that hard and it can really make someone’s day.

Councilmember urges approval of CSO Citizens of Milton, I know the development of a conservation subdivision ordinance has been a very long (18 months) and bumpy process. I appreciate everyone’s patience and the time people have spent trying to understand the implications and the details of the ordinance. I realize there are many people who are unconvinced this is a positive step for the
city, but I remain confident that it will be. I would like to request that people take a look at the new ordinance that has been just released. It has taken a while but the city and council have listened to many different parties and talked to our consultant. The new draft addresses most of the legitimate concerns that have been brought to our attention. I urge you not to dismiss
the new ordinance due to past versions or negative preconceptions. Conservation subdivision ordinances are being used successfully across the country to help retain rural aspects of suburban cities like our own. They have shown to promote higher property values as well conserved thousands of acres across the country. This ordinance is an important step of what needs to
be changed in the city to keep Milton, Milton. Please take the time to read the ordinance and ask the city questions about parts that are unclear. We have a solid FAQ on our website. I will be glad to meet personally to discuss the ordinance and hope to hear constructive suggestions for changes. Bill Lusk, Milton Councilmember

Career academy: better option for some Talks have begun on building a career academy in Forsyth County. This nontraditional high school would provide students the opportunity to get hands-on, real-world experience before earning their high school diplomas. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Bearden said the reason many students drop out of school is because they don’t find what they’re learning in high school to be relevant to their daily lives. With this new school offering courses such as law enforcement or hospitality, students will be able to see their hard work pay off, literally and figuratively. The prevailing opinion, locally and otherwise, seems to suggest that high-school grads who don’t go to college and graduate will be failures and amount to nothing. This just doesn’t make sense as many students don’t want to or need to go to college to achieve their goals and be productive members of society. Students who can graduate from high school with valuable skills and go straight into the workforce will still be vital to our society, even without spending up to four years of
their lives and paying thousands of dollars to earn college degrees. The topic of student loans comes up often when talking to my friends. They say it may not even be worth it to attend college if you’re stuck paying your student loans for years and not doing a job you enjoy. If some of these students could bypass college altogether and go straight into well-paying careers, they would avoid student loans and begin earning money much sooner. Not all jobs necessarily require a fouryear college education, but they are still just as crucial to our society. Some examples that come to mind are plumbers and electricians. I hope some students will see this as an option that will help further their future without wasting time and money on something that won’t help them in the long run. A student I know in Johns Creek took advantage of a similar educational program, attending a local college to earn his associate’s degree before graduating high school. That gave him the opportunity to start attending

Georgia Tech as a junior, saving thousands of dollars. Don’t get me wrong, I loved college and I know I learned a lot during my four years at the University of West Georgia. However, the summers I spent interning, gaining real-life, hands-on experience with a variety of careers I was interested in taught me far more than sitting in a classroom. College may not be for everyone so it’s time we stop trying to force all students into the same higher-education box. Kudos to Forsyth County Schools for recognizing this and working to address the needs of all their students, and not just those bound for four-year universities. I can’t wait to see how the new, nontraditional grads of Forsyth County’s future will better our community.

Betty Price sworn in as new district 48 representative ROSWELL, Ga. — Dr. Betty Price has been sworn in as the 48th House District Representative to the Georgia Legislature representing parts of Roswell and Alpharetta. She was sworn in by Judge Tom Campbell who previously served in this seat in the Georgia legislature from 1989-2004. Campbell was elected to the State House in a special summer election following the death of State Representative Luther Colbert, a former Roswell City Councilmember, who succumbed from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on June 5, 1989. Price also was elected in a special summer election called by Governor Nathan Deal upon the passing of State Representative Harry Geisinger of Roswell who died after a short illness on May 1, 2015. Geisinger served in the seat from 1969 to 1974, and again from 2004 until this year. On hand for the low-key swearing in were her husband Congressman Dr. Tom Price and their son Robert, who both witnessed the first day of officially assuming the office on July 20, 2015. “It was so special to have my good friend and neighbor Tom Campbell swear me in to the Georgia House wearing his ceremonial robe. He showed us newspaper clippings from his race in 1989 and we compared the similarities. It was an intimate and contemplative time with my husband and son both able to share witnessing the oath taken in Judge Campbell’s chambers in Atlanta,” Price said. Price had stepped down after more than five years on the Roswell City Council and qualified to run for the State House on June 1, 2015. Six weeks later she was elected to the Georgia legislature on July 14, 2015, defeating two opponents without the necessity for a runoff. “I am looking forward to getting to work serving

Fulton County seeks more poll workers for upcoming elections ATLANTA – Election officials in Fulton County are seeking interested people willing and available to assist in the 2015 general election Nov. 3. Throughout the county, fall elections each year result in increased demand for staff to man polling sites. This year, among the locations where workers are needed include precincts in Milton, Johns Creek, Alpharetta, and Roswell. “Our goal is to have all areas of the county represented by the team in place to work the polls,” said Fulton County Director of Elections and Registration Rick Barron. “That is why we are putting out this call weeks in advance of people actually heading out to vote.” “It is helpful to streamline the voting process to have poll workers that live in each community and know the citizens that come into their local poll to vote,” said Liz Hausmann, District 1 commissioner. Interested potential workers are required to complete online training and in-person training prior to each election. Those who complete poll worker training are paid $30 contingent upon working Election Day. Additional payment ranges from $175 to $275 depending upon roll, duties, and prior experience as a poll worker. “In the past, it has been a huge inconvenience to the poll workers recruited from other parts of the county to commute far from home to assist,” said Barron. “The application process is easily accessible to all who want to participate.” The application to become a poll worker is available online at www.fultonelections.com.

Colonial Pipeline conducts response drills on ’Hooch Response readiness a priority for Alpharetta-based company By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – What comes to mind when someone mentions BP and the Exxon Valdez in the same breath? Oil spills come to mind if your memory is good. Well, Colonial Pipeline is working to ensure that its name never comes up in that conversation, as its safety drills out on the Chattahoochee River can attest. Colonial had teams of employees out on the river July 29 in Roswell doing some of the company’s on-water response training so they will be prepared to react quickly in an emergency. Colonial Communications Specialist Ryan Rogers said the exercise is one of about 40 to 50 such exercises the company does either on an annual or biannual basis in the 13 states in which it operates. “We have 5,500 miles of pipeline, beginning in Houston and running through those 13 states as far as the New Jersey side of New York Harbor. So we have a lot to be prepared for.” The particular on-water exercise on the Chattahoochee at Don White Memorial Park was to train employees and contractors on deploying and using a containment boom on the water. “The drills can be in a variety of environments – on water, on land or on rights of way.
Colonial personnel practice paying out a spill containment boom on the Chattahoochee.
Colonial Pipeline Associate Project Manager Maggie Schafer has a smile during the training exercise. This particular one was one of the annual on-water drills,” Rogers said. Colonial also uses the exercises as a way to get to know the local authorities as well. “We coordinate our exercises with them. That kind of collaboration with state agencies and first responders pays off in other ways also,” he said. “We make an effort in all 13 states, every county, every
town we operate in to have those kinds of relationships with local fire and police, local emergency units. We want to make those relationships now so we know who each other are.” There is a lot of collaboration and interaction among those agencies. You don’t want to have to make introductions with each other during an emergency, Rogers said. With Colonial’s headquarters in Alpharetta, many employees are brought here for all kinds of training, often including this sort of response operations.

3 local bike shops named tops in nation Roswell bikes rated No. 2 in U.S. By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Active Times, a website devoted to all sports, has compiled a list of the top 50 bike stores in the nation. North Fulton was well represented with three stores making the cut: Roswell Bikes (No. 2), Bikes and Life (No. 22) in Johns Creek, and Alpha Bikes (No. 45). This is the third-annual listing of top stores in the country by The Active Times. Readers of the website voted on more than 120 shops around the country. Georgia as a state came in second overall for number of bike shops on the list (four). This was behind only Colorado. The state did not place a single location in last year’s list. Coming in at No. 45 was Alpha Bikes, located on Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta. Owner Michael Horowitz
said he was honored by the award but it doesn’t surprise him. This is also the second year his shop had made the top list compiled by the National Bike Dealer’s Association. He chalked the nod up to good service and community. “It’s the guys who work here,” Horowitz said. “The guys in the shop know their stuff and are passionate. That comes across loud and clear.” Above that, the store routinely gives to charities and helps within the bicycling community. Bikes and Life (formerly The Bicycle Wheel) is in Johns Creek, off Medlock Bridge Road. They were named No. 22 in the top 50. “One of the things we pride ourselves on is our dedication to customer service,” said Lisa Tamiso, with Bikes and Life. “Our service department is top-notch and we have over 50 years of experience with just
Generating awareness, interest & motivation As a small business owner, are you generating awareness of your products and services through your marketing efforts? When you meet with potential customers, are you creating interest in what you are selling? Generating awareness and interest during the sales process is very important, but if you can’t motivate a potential customer to buy, good luck in selling them something! Successful marketing programs that target a specific customer segment will help you to create awareness of the products and services you are selling. Getting a potential buyer interested often involves showing them the benefits of the product or service. Many sales professionals do a great job of creating awareness and interest, but don’t close the sale because they haven’t motivated the potential customer to buy. Motivating a potential customer requires that you demonstrate the value of

having, owning, or using your product and service. For some products this could be showing how much time a customer can save by using your product, or how much more effective they will be by hiring you to provide a service you sell. Motivating a potential customer to buy has to be focused on what’s in it for them. Many small businesses do a terrific job of creating awareness and interest of their products and services, but fall short by not creating the motivation to buy. two guys in the shop.” Coupled with this is a desire to be a part of the healthconscious community. “We integrate ourselves with healthy living, and fitness lifestyle, not just cycling,” Tamiso said. “We are trying to meet the needs of the entire community and it helps that the community loves cycling.” She said being considered one of the top bike shops in the nation was exciting. “We just started this business last fall,” she said. “This lets us know we are doing things correctly. It isn’t surprising, we have an incredible staff.” Roswell Bikes came in a No. 2 on the list. The website notes the store has “an unparalleled selection of bikes, gear and apparel.” “Being ranked No. 2 in the USA market certainly makes us proud,” said Todd Kaib, with Roswell Bicycles. “I believe that our involvement in national events and charities helped give us the advantage over many of the other top 50 in that we are known by many outside of Georgia.” Considering the fourth Georgia bike shop on the list is in Marietta, it’s clear the north metro region as a whole is popular with bicyclists. “We are ecstatic to have Atlanta now be viewed as a real cycling community,” Kaib said. “Having four Georgia stores in the top 50 is a testament to the overall quality of service that is offered in our Atlanta market.” Horowitz agreed. “People are interested

The number of employees reacting is in the hundreds. Always, the goal is to examine what is getting done well and zero in on what is not and

While the Atlanta metro area is well behind other metro areas of its size, they are clearly getting the dollars and infrastructure to make us more cycling friendly.” Indeed, whenever a new road project comes along, bike lanes are often considered as an improvement. Roswell Mayor Jere Wood, himself an active cyclist, said he was not surprised North Fulton was so well represented. “There’s a lot of loyalty bicyclists have to their store,” he said. “There is a synergy between a good store and an avid bicyclist.” As the store supports its clients, the clients support the store, he said. North Fulton – and Roswell – are far enough from the metro area that cyclists can correct it, he said. “So we do both regularly scheduled training as well as the unannounced drills. The best way to put it is training for emergency preparedness is a big part of our operations. It’s not an afterthought,” Rogers said. “It’s a focus for us.” For this exercise, Colonial invited the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, the nonprofit watchdog organization, to let them know what efforts Colonial is prepared to make in an emergency. “We think it is important that they are aware of our training. And it is important to get their feedback as well,” Rogers said. “We have a shared goal in keeping the river system clean.” Colonial does have pipelines that go under the river.

But emergency response is only half of Colonial’s safety plan. Much of the effort goes into preventing any accidents before they can happen. Colonial uses a variety of methods to ensure the pipeline’s integrity on a 24/7 basis. These include flying planes over the rights of way to inspect visually and inserting “smart” tools into the pipe on a regular basis to look for anomalies. Then they make corrosion tests on the pipes themselves and use recoats. “We have a pretty robust integrity program that makes sure our pipeline system is safe, that’s obviously the priority,” Rogers said. “But it is just as important to us to respond if we ever did have an incident.”

Business Expo hosts 59 vendors By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Local businesses and community members had a chance Aug. 13 to mix and mingle at the 2015 Business Expo at the Forsyth Conference Center, 3410 Ronald Reagan Blvd. Jason Mock with the Cumming-Forsyth Chamber of Commerce, who put on the expo, said it was a great event. “Today’s been a good day for our business community and for our public to get out and meet businesses in Forsyth County and see new products and services,” Mock said. “It’s a great opportunity for the residents of this community to come out and see our businesses.” One of the title sponsors of the event was Kubicek Information Technologies, which offers flat-rate IT managed ser-

Eugene Kovalov is the lead support engineer and he said the expo gives other businesses and local residents an opportunity to learn about his company. “A lot of these businesses are small businesses that are trying to grow like us,” Kovalov said. “We aren’t a large business and we want to grow, but at the same time our main point is to help others grow. We want everyone to know about us and to know they can rely on us to help them grow.” Other businesses in attendance included Miles, Hansford and Tallant law firm, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Costco. North Fulton teams look to bounce back from disappointing 2014 By JOE PARKER news@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga.- For most North Fulton softball teams, 2014 was a disappointing year with only Blessed Trinity and Cambridge earning playoff berths. Cambridge, undefeated in Region 7-AAAAA play in 2014, was the only North Fulton team to make the state championships last season, where they finished runner-up in the state and compiled a 28-5 overall record. The Bears defeated Harris County and Union Grove before being dealt a loss by Greenbrier. They defeated Harris County once again to earn a berth in the finals against Greenbrier. They would win that game 11-6 but would have to face them again for the final game of the state championship, a game they lost 10-4. Cambridge will be without fielders Lauren Stewart, Amanda Chernick and Savannah Dixon, as well as catcher Bela Bravo, but returns fielders Taylor Hauber and Emily Fedrigon as well as pitchers Mariah Kubik and Keara Napoli. In region 6-AAAAAA, North Fulton teams were at the bot-

tom in 2014. Only Northview and Johns Creek had winning seasons at 14-11 and 15-13 respectively. Chattahoochee, Alpharetta and Centennial all finished at the bottom of the region standings, Chattahoochee at 12-14, Alpharetta
at 5-15 and Centennial, who went 0-18 in region play and 4-18 overall. The Titans of Blessed Trinity had a successful season in 2014 but a disappointing end in the second round of the state playoffs.
The Titans compiled a 24-10 overall record and won Region 4-AAA Private with a region record of 16-1. The Titans averaged eight runs per game while only allowing three runs per game. BT graduated much of their
2014 team in Rachel Garrity, Laura O’Brien, Katie Nichols, Kris Von Hagel and Mia Hughes. They return pitchers Skylar Hamilton and Raegan Lehman along with fielders Nina Castro, MacKenzie Kristufek and Christine Kraybill.

Johns Creek and BT teams to watch By JOE PARKER news@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. - The Johns Creek Gladiators volleyball team finished the 2014 season ranked eighth in the state according to Maxpreps.com after their run in the state championships. The Gladiators posted a 37-15 overall record in 2014 but have lost key players to graduation. The Gladiators will be without Olivia Durrence, who had 255 kills in 2014, along with Alisha Hinrichs, Camden Groff and Madison Harty. However, they return seniors Madeline Savage and Mikaela Gauthreaux, both of whom played the most sets for the Gladiators last season. Savage played 125 sets, where she compiled 94 aces, which was the most in Region 6-AAAAAA, along with 327 kills, 15 blocks and 442 digs. 6-foot1 senior Gauthreaux also played 125 sets, had 344 kills, 44 blocks, 298 digs and 33 aces. The Gladiators will also return Erin Williamson, Crystal Childs and Clara Kidney. Johns Creek finished atop the Region 6-AAAAAA standings last season over South Forsyth. They beat Etowah and Archer by a combined 6-0 to reach the state playoffs. The Gladiators then defeated region rival South Forsyth before being knocked out in the semifinals to eventual state AAAAAA runnerup North Cobb. Also in Region 6-AAAAAA, Roswell
will look to return to the state championships in 2015. Roswell compiled a 33-21 overall record. They were knocked out of the first round of the state championships by East Coweta. The Hornets will be without top server Morgan Jones but return Camryn Bossinas as well as seniors Margaret Schad and Sarah Hall. Blessed Trinity will enter the 2015 season as the reigning state champions in AAA. In 2014, the Titans went 52-11 and 15-0 in sets in the playoffs and state championships. BT has made the state championships the past three seasons. The Titans will be without Maggie Rick, who led the team in kills with 354, and Amber MacDonald, who led the team with 144 aces, averaging 1 ace per set. BT’s leading blockers will return in Sarah Parker and Remy Smith, both of whom had over 80 blocks last season. The Titans also return Emma Simonsen, who played 136 sets in 2014, along with Alyssa Kuroski, Annie Dempsey and Juliet Medley. In Region 7-AAAAA, Cambridge went 6-0 in region play and 31-18 overall last season. The Bears defeated Druid Hills and Allatoona in the playoffs before being knocked out 3-2 by Columbus in the first round of the state championships. Cambridge will return all but one member of the 2014 campaign this season and the extra year of experience

NORTH FULTON CROSS-COUNTRY PREVIEW »
BT boys and Northview girls to defend state championships By JOE PARKER news@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga.- North Fulton teams fared well at last year’s cross-country state championships, with the Blessed Trinity boys and Northview girls teams winning Class AAA and AAAAAA respectively, as well as a runner-up position for the Blessed Trinity girls. Fellowship Christian’s Emma Grace Hurley won the individual state title for Class A Private. According to Greg Johnson, head coach for Blessed Trinity’s boys cross-country team, the Titans are “hungry” for another state championship. The Titans tied with East Jackson’s first five finishing runners at the 2014 state championships. The tiebreaking procedure involves comparing the score for the teams’ sixth runners. Brennan O’Connor’s time of 18:06.3 bested East Jackson’s sixth runner by five seconds, earning BT the state championship. “It was great seeing our seniors accomplish [a state championship] last year after four years of hard work,” he said. “We were hungry for it
and we are still hungry.” The Titans will be without Andre Rodriguez, Chase Boran and Grayson Huggins in 2015, but Johnson said he is confident in his young team. “We are a relatively young team. We have a senior in Robby Gipson, who is our number-one runner and Ben McCoy, our number two, and then we have sophomores Leo Pryor, Brennan O’Connor and Chris Turko. We also have a lot of depth behind them.” Johnson believes his team can win another state championship but will have tough competition from Westminster, East Jackson and Oconee. “We want the state championship again. That’s what we are going for this fall,” he said. The BT girls came up just short of a state championship last year, finishing second behind Westminster. An assistant in 2014, Marissa Bohan will take over head coaching responsibilities for the Titans girls team this season. “Mary Claire Solomon has made a huge impact on the team,” Bohan said, adding that Maddie Heller and Emma Rose Bagwell are also standouts.
“These girls have shown a great deal of heart in the off season,” she said. According to Bohan, the focus of the offseason has been on “doing the little things right.” “I have a tremendous group of young women who put a lot of passion and dedication into what they do. We are building a program that places emphasis on the seemingly insignificant details which ultimately make all of the difference.”
Thank You...
The Northview girls will also be defending their state championship of 2014 and will return their top five runners from that team. Lindsay Billings, who won the individual state championship in 2014, along with Anna Barefield, Sarika Temme-Bapat, Tiffany Yue and Shannon Marsh, will all compete again for the Titans this year. Fellowship Christian senior Emma Grace Hurley will be defending her individual Class
A Private state championship of 2014 after being named the Gatorade Georgia Girls Runner of the Year for 2014. Hurley captured the state title, finished seventh at the Foot Locker South Regional Championships and 24th at the national championships. Hurley also competed in track and field this spring. On May 7, Hurley won the state championship in the 3200 meters with a state-record time of 10:38.01.

Other local elected officials included Johns Creek Mayor Pro Tem Steve Broadbent and state Sen. John Albers. It was a festive atmosphere that started off with a parade of Indian states. It included traditional Indian dancers and music and other Indian cultural programs. There were plenty of family amusements, including camel and pony rides, fire jugglers, stilt walkers, face painting and many carnival games. The crowd was estimated at 4,000 people.

Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’ returns Benefits The Drake House ROSWELL, Ga. – “Starting out as a small ice cream social, Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’ has become the ice cream event of the year for metro Atlanta,” said Karen Pye, development director at The Drake House. The Ice Cream Crankin’ brings together local civic, faith and business groups for an old fashioned ice cream social, offering over 100 flavors of homemade ice cream and celebrity judges to rate the best flavors. Now in its 10th year, the family event is being held in
the Roswell Square on Sunday, Aug. 30 from 2 - 4 p.m., with music provided by DJ Neezy, contests, prizes and children’s activities. Each year, attendance and proceeds increase, with this year’s attendance expected to exceed 3,200 with a financial goal of $50,000. Money raised benefits The Drake House. The Drake House offers short-term crisis housing, education and empowerment programs for homeless single mothers and their children. The non-profit was founded in 2004 to fill an unmet need in the area. Since opening their doors in June of 2006, The Drake House has served 345 families with 635 children who
have originated from Sandy Springs, Roswell, Johns Creek, Alpharetta and Milton. Despite the presumed affluence of the area, The Drake House stays close to or at capacity all year long in their 15-unit apartment complex. The organization depends on financial and volunteer support from the community to sustain their very successful program and the Ice Cream Crankin’ offers a much-needed revenue stream. For information on sponsorship, ticket sales or to be involved as a “Crankin’ Team,” visit www.missmarysicecream. org or contact Karen Pye at kpye@thedrakehouse.org. — Jonathan Copsey

Milton’s ‘Great Wall’ is no more Local Cogburn Road landmark goes to make way for redevelopment By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The 300-foot “Great Wall” on Cogburn Road that had been a landmark – if not an eyesore – for many years met with the developer’s wrecking ball last week. The wall and house on the 3.55acre property have been demolished to make way for three single-family homes. Drew Nietzer is one of the partners in the redevelopment project. He was out inspecting the demolition of the property when he agreed to talk about the future plans. Justin Adams and a woman who may or may not have been his wife lived on the property. He died and the woman, an invalid, has lived elsewhere for some time. According to Fulton County property records, the property at 14220 Cogburn Road
belonged to Minnie Lou Green. “Two years ago the city really got on the couple that lived here about the wall. It was supposed to be a privacy fence of just 6 feet, but it was more like 8 feet,” Nietzer said. The wall was made of cinder blocks and portions were faced with brick. The two entrances of the property had arched gateways, which meant large trucks could not enter from Cogburn Road. In March 2014, the city had enough of complaints about the junk piling up behind the wall and got a court order that allowed them to come clean up the property. The city carted away 400 tons of garbage, debris, abandoned cars, boats and construction materials. They even hauled off huge piles of dirt and sand. The city had filed $42,000 in fines against Adams, but rarely

collected any of it from him. Jim Pointer, the contractor for the demolition of the property, said he knew Adams. He said the man was a dirt broker, someone who agrees to remove dirt from a construction site or locate fill dirt for a site that needed dirt. At every construction site, there is a need to remove the dirt, or the opposite. “It never works out that you have two sites at the same time and move it from one to the other,” Pointer said. “Justin would follow me in my truck in a VW bus wearing an aluminum hard hat. He would tell me he had a guy who either needed dirt or would take it. “And if he could make a deal with me, then he would go try to find a customer. He never had the customer to begin with. But most all dirt brokers lie.”
HATCHER HURD/STAFF
Two marble columns left on the property show the previous owner planned some sort of formal garden, but it was never close to completion. Pointer said Adams was “unreliable” and his opinion of Adams did go up after demolishing the house. “He was a hoarder. That house was just packed with trash, junk and garbage from the basement to the ceiling,” he said. “It was just foul.” Nietzer and his partners plan to build three homes in the high $700,000s to low $800,000s range on the 3.55acre property. “There are a lot of good specimen trees on the prop-
erty, including a Japanese maple, some magnolias and others. There are some developer-size boulders we will keep to use as accents in the landscaping,” he said. Construction will start in 60 to 90 days, he said. Pointer knows the site has caused locals in the area some twinges because it was so eccentric. “Our goal is to restore the property as quickly as possible so that when people drive by, they won’t know we’re here,” Nietzer said.

Vaccination rate in schools remains high Religious objection waiver forms seldom used BY CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON, COUNTY — Parents in Fulton County schools can rest assured the child sitting next to their child in the classroom and cafeteria this year is likely vaccinated from the host of childhood diseases that pose a public health threat. Fulton’s vaccination is just over 98 percent, which mirrors the statewide compliance rate of 98.3 percent for public schoolchildren. “Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect children and adults against many common infectious diseases,” said Nancy Nydam, media relations manager for the Georgia Department of Public Health. “Vaccines are safe, and scientists continually work to make sure they become even safer.” She added that although many childhood diseases, including mumps and measles, have been eradicated or reduced in the United States, these diseases still exist in
other parts of the world. International travel can easily bring those diseases into the U.S. “For example, measles is not very common in the United States due to vaccination, but the disease is brought into the United States by unvaccinated travelers who are infected abroad. After reaching this country, measles can spread quickly among unvaccinated people as we saw with the Disneyland outbreak late last year,” said Nydam, pointing to a late-winter outbreak in California which spread measles across the country. As a result of the outbreak, California passed a law removing religious exemptions from vaccinations, and now joins Mississippi as the only two states which require proof of vaccinations for public-school enrollment. In Georgia, parents still have the right to waive vaccinations for their public schoolchildren for medical or religious reasons. This year, however, the GDPH required parents to file a notarized Affidavit of Religious Objection to Immunization (DPH Form 2208) with their school. The new requirement simply puts the same process into place in every school system across the state, noted Nydam.
“The move to this form was for uniformity and to standardize these requests for exemption. Previously, a parent or legal guardian was required to provide a written statement swearing or affirming that immunizations conflicted with his or her religious beliefs,” said Nydam. If claiming a religious waiver, parents also agree that, in the event of an “epidemic or

threatened epidemic” involving a disease preventable through vaccinations, students will be required to get vaccines or remain out of school during the emergency phase. In Georgia’s public schools, vaccination forms are only required in grades kindergarten, 7th, and for new students in grades 8-12. In Fulton County, health officials are complying with the new state policies for religious exemption, noting there are no other changes to the vaccination policies for this year. A spokeswoman did note the revised
travel policy for students traveling to and from Ebola-impacted countries is still in effect. Last October, Fulton Schools implemented changes to its registration process for new students from West Africa, primarily from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, which was the epicenter for the Ebola outbreak that killed thousands. New students from these countries will not be enrolled in a Fulton County School without proper medical documentation or after the student is asymptomatic after an established time period.

involved going on a first date with a guy who listed his appearance on an online profile as being 6-foot-5 with an athletic build. When she met him, she said, he was very skinny everywhere except his “basketball for a stomach.” Another story Tyler told the group was of yet another first date, when the guy proposed. She jokingly said yes, after which her date took out a stack of papers for her to sign. Tyler said she draws her motivation from her daughter. “Showing her that you can overcome anything is big for me,” she said, “because she has seen me go through a lot of things in the past.” The winner of the evaluation contest was Mike Tominiyi. He gave the final humorous speaker praise for having great body language and vocal variety. He offered the speaker, who was actually making his first speech to the
ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The Alpharetta Toastmasters held its humorous speech contest Aug. 5 at the Kroger near Windward Parkway. The speakers were vying for the honor of representing the Alpharetta club at the area contest. Five speakers participated in the humorous speech contest while another four attendees took part in an evaluation contest. The humorous speech portion involved each speaker telling funny stories for five minutes. The evaluation contest took place after the last humorous speaker finished. The winner of the humorous contest, Giavanna Tyler, gave a speech called, “It’s been a rough, but comical, 12 years,” in which she detailed numerous funny experiences she’s had since getting divorced 12 years ago. District: Continued from Page 1 has oversight of the city project. “We have done a preliminary look with CH2M Hill to see what obstacles we might face.” So Taylor has presented the question of whether to pursue a plan B at a city council workshop. But no decision has been made to do so at this time. “The fact of the matter is the stream is already there, and we have to figure out just how we are going to work with it,” he said. “It is likely feasible, but there will be some challenges obviously we will have to face early on.” These would include permitting times, the processes and how to mitigate all the environmental issues surrounding the creek and any tributaries. “So what we want to do is figure out what those challenges were on the front end,” he said. “We want to see what a second alternative might look like.” It is still too early for the city to say how long it will take to get a handle on those challenges and then ask the consultants Urban Design Associates to come up with alternatives. Come what may, the city expects that same area on the east side of Medlock Bridge

Road to be the core of the 728acre development. “When you look at the entire area, the most likely spot for that core with the most density is still going be that same place we’ve been concentrating on,” Taylor said. “That’s still the starting point.” Mayor Mike Bodker said any development of this magnitude will need what he called a “central feature.” “We were trying to use the natural landscape and enhance it to become that natural feature. In this case what we call the Canal District,” Bodker said. “At some point you have to explore whether to it is doable
or not. You have to make a decision whether it is worth the time delay and the expense. Also there are new laws all the time that make it more difficult to deal with areas that have flowing water,” Bodker said. So the city is looking at two other options. One includes a manmade water feature and the second would have no water feature at all. Either option would be substantive enough to create that “spark of vibrancy” that would serve as an attraction and a magnet to bring people to the property. “If all we do is a ‘me-too’ version of Avalon, we have to get in line.
