FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Georgia ranks ninth among states with the highest rates of females murdered by males, according to the Violence Policy Center.

While Georgia as a whole may have a domestic violence problem, Forsyth may not, which may be difficult to imagine in light of the county’s multiple high-profile domesticviolence cases during the past few weeks.

On July 8, Forsyth County 911 operator Erin Jones, 28, was shot to death by her live-in

boyfriend, 43, who then killed himself, according to police.

On July 17, a 64-year-old woman reportedly shot her 69-year-old husband several times. And, on July 22, Rebecca Manning, 37, was allegedly killed by her boyfriend who also killed Manning’s 8and 9-year-old sons, Jared and Jacob Smith. He also shot and critically wounded Manning’s father.

But even with the recent spate of violence, Faith Fanning, a victim advocate with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, said they don’t see a

Speeding truck T-bones car at Cumming intersection

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A highspeed chase Aug. 15 beginning in Lawrenceville ended in a huge collision in downtown Cumming outside the new courthouse.

Forsyth sheriff’s deputies were notified that Lawrenceville police units were pursuing around 12:11 a.m. a 2001 gray Chevrolet Silverado traveling 100 mph.

The police were chasing 50-year-old Billy Simonton of Loganville on Ga. 20 westbound into Forsyth County.

A Forsyth deputy joined in the chase as they headed toward downtown Cumming and onto Veterans Memorial Boulevard.

While allegedly running a red light heading northeast on West Maple, Simonton collided with a 2014 Toyota Tacoma truck driven by Eraclio Casas of Cumming. Simonton’s truck tuned and flipped onto its side upon impact and crashed into the brick wall at the corner of the main Forsyth County Courthouse on West Maple and Veterans Memorial Boulevard.

The impact of the crash sent Casas’ truck across Veterans Boulevard and up onto the curb near the old courthouse. It came to a rest after toppling a street light pole.

Dog bakes in car while owner shops FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — While a 33-year-old man shopped at Kohl’s at Market Place Boulevard, his dog sat in his car for over an hour as temperatures inside reached 130 degrees.

The Sheriff’s Office received a call July 30 in reference to a dog locked inside a vehicle. The car’s windows were cracked open and a blue healer dog was lying on the floorboard of the car and

The deputy then took the dog out of the car as the owner came out of the store an hour after leaving the dog. He was issued a citation for cruelty to animals.

While waiting at a stoplight along the way, she said the driver in front of her in Toyota Prius missed the light due to being distracted. She went around the car but the Prius driver reportedly became angry and followed her to McDonalds. The two started yelling at each other and the Prius driver blocked the woman’s path into the restaurant, but she slapped the car and walked inside. When she left, the Prius was gone.

She called police to record the dispute in case of any further issues. All she was able to provide to police was she believed the man had a sharp pointy nose and she thought he was from the north because he called her a redneck.

Child hands out $100,000 card collection FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — An eight-year-old attending the summer program at Kid Central, 2240 Keith Bridge Road, gave out cards Aug. 10 from his $100,000 Pokémon collection. His mother told the Sheriff’s Office she didn’t know her son had the collection, and his teacher knew he wasn’t allowed to bring it to school due to its great value. When the mother came to pick up her son, another child in the class came up to her to show the card her son gave him. The child’s teacher reportedly was on her cellphone. The mother told officers no one helped her in recovering the cards.

Don’t use handgun for door knocker ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A Lawrenceville man was arrested Aug. 16 for DUI after allegedly banging on hotel doors with a handgun then trying to drive way.

Police were called to the Marriott hotel on Deerfield Parkway at 7:30 a.m. after reports of a man going door-to-

door banging on the doors with a handgun. He was said to be driving a blue BMW. As police were searching the hotel, a blue BMW tried to leave the hotel parking lot.

It was stopped by police. The driver, Christopher Gillings, 29, Lawrenceville, was asked if he had a weapon, and allegedly admitted to having one in the glove box.

Only a holster was found.

He then said the gun was locked in a hotel room, which was why he was banging on doors, to get it back. When speaking with him, police say they noticed a smell of alcohol.

He allegedly admitted to taking several shots.

The gun was not found and Gillings was instead charged with DUI.

Why steal at all?

MILTON, Ga. – A Loganville man was arrested Aug. 10 after buying several expensive electronic items and then allegedly attempting to steal a phone case.

Employees of the Fry’s Electronics store on Ga. 9 told police they saw the suspect come into the store and begin shopping. He picked up two iPhone cases as well as two keyboards and a flying drone.

He paid for all the items except one phone case, which he had put in his pants.

He was arrested as he left the store.

“We see awareness,” Fanning said. “That gives us an opportunity to speak to the community and share and educate them where we may not have the opportunity before. It’s sad it takes that to have that opportunity.”

Even without an overall increase in cases, the FCSO typically receives over 30 reports of domestic-violence incidents a month. In an openrecords request from July 1 to 31, there were 34 cases ranging from simple assault (four), simple battery (22), battery family violence (seven) and aggravated assault with other weapon (one).

Robin Regan, FCSO public information officer, said their domestic-violence statistics have dropped over the past three to four years, but it’s tough to tell what’s causing the drop.

“The percent of those calls that have turned into arrests have stayed the same,” Regan said. “As far as responding to those calls, we’re doing the same things and the same percent of people are resulting in getting arrested, but the actual calls have been decreasing.”

There were 1,355 domestic violence incidents in 2012, Regan said. In 2013 there were 938, and in 2014 that number reduced to 776.

Fanning said the Victim’s Advocate unit marks their incidents quarterly, and they average about 100 every quarter.

“That’s just the domestic violence,” Fanning said. “That’s not counting all the other incidents we look at including

Fanning’s three-person department includes one domestic-violence specialist. The department helps all types of victims get help, from offering attorney recommendations to working with victims of ID theft.

“We walk the journey with them, whatever they might need,” Fanning said. “Between counseling, talking on the phone and just being there for people. If there is not awareness and education and support in the community, we’re going to be stuck with the same strongholds. To be able to move forward we have to have the ability to have people walk alongside us. Even people from poor to rich — all need people to come alongside them.”

Michelle Toledo-Cainas is a vice co-chair for the Forsyth County Domestic Violence Task Force. She said she first got involved with the cause after her sister survived a domestic-violence situation.

“One thing she told me after being in an abusive relationship for eight years: ‘If I only knew about the resources I think it would have given me strength to get out,’” ToledoCainas said, adding victims often feel isolated or alone. The power and control the abus-

BOE names career academy

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. —The Forsyth County Board of Education on Aug. 20 approved the name for a proposed college and career academy: Alliance Academy for Innovation of Cumming-Forsyth County.

Alliance is for the business partnerships, academy for specialized studies and innovation for the multi-use facility.

The school would be for about 1,000 ninth through 12th graders in the county and would provide secondary and continuing education for individuals,

organizations, small businesses and corporations located within the city of Cumming.

The city would provide the land, about 15 acres, the Forsyth County Public Facilities Authority would assist in providing accelerated financing and the BOE would provide operational oversight and the underlying revenues for purchase of the land and facility. It would also be a grant collaboration with the state of Georgia, and programs will be in partnership with the University of North Georgia and Lanier Technical College. Forsyth County gets new look Updating logo and tag line

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The face — or at least the logo — of the Forsyth County Government system will be getting a makeover. The Board of Commissioners approved implementing a new county logo and tag line on Aug. 20.

Jodi Gardner, director of communications for the county, said the BOC wanted a new logo a few years ago so a group was formed to focus on the county’s overall brand.

The group primarily focused on highlighting the county’s natural resources and quality of life.

The adopted tag line is “Your community, your future.” ““We are proud to adopt a logo and tag line that showcase the things for which Forsyth County is well known – our great natural resources like our parks and Lake Lanier, and being a family-friendly community that offers great quality of life and unparalleled opportunities,” said Commission Chairman R.J. (Pete) Amos. “The logo also includes

1832, the year Forsyth County was incorporated. Forsyth County is a great place to call home and I think the new logo and tag line really capture and represent that.”

Last September, the BOC said Gardner and the group should work with a designer to create the new logo. The process included community input via an online survey conducted in 2014.

“It was very important that at the beginning of this process we started by hearing from our residents and county employees to get their insight,” said County Manager Doug Derrer.

“We appreciate the community’s participation in the survey, as it provided excellent direction for us in terms of developing a tag line and new logo.

The input received through the survey was an extremely valuable part of this process.”

The survey results identified the county’s most valuable physical asset as Lake Lanier, ranked quality of life as the most important among all that Forsyth County offers, and identified “family-friendly” as the term that perfectly described the county.

options. The three choices all included a silhouette of a family and natural resources seen around the county including Lake Lanier, Sawnee Mountain and Big Creek Greenway.

Forsyth YMCA trains 118 kids for triathlon

The YMCA teaches children how to set up transition stations for the The Atlanta Kids Triathlon.

The participants trained twice a week for eight weeks, with four running and bik-

ing sessions, and two or three swimming sessions.

The training was spread by word of mouth through members and neighbors and eventually grew to the largest group participating in the triathlon.

Some of the main goals of the training was to help children learn about healthier liv-

ing and getting the community involved with training.

“Consequently, we have a lot of the parents out on the track running with their kids,” McKenna said. “This is when we start to create good habits with our kids,” she said. “The earlier we can get our kids involved with understanding how important exercise is and

how important healthy eating habits are, the better. Research has shown the earlier intervention we have with our kids, the more likely they will grow up having healthier lifestyles and eating habits.”

Aside from healthier habits, McKenna said she and the other instructors at the YMCA also hope the children have fun and get stronger.

“It’s about building their self-confidence and sense of accomplishment,” McKenna said. “It’s amazing to see these kids when they first come out to the track and are not able to run half of the track but, at the end, they’re doing an entire loop around the track and riding their bikes.”

The Atlanta Kids Triathlon was Aug. 23 at the Gwinnett Aquatic Center and had about 1,100 participants. Of those, 118 local children ages 6 to 18 trained for eight weeks with the Forsyth County YMCA, 6050 Y Street.

This is the fourth year the YMCA has trained kids for free, and the training is open to YMCA members and nonmembers alike, said Kim McKenna with the Forsyth YMCA. “We take these kids and help them be a little more proficient at all the events, including swim, bike and run,” McKenna said. “We teach them about transition and how to set up their gear so they feel really prepared during the event.”

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Library board identifies final candidate for director Office announces accreditation strategy FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Effective Sept. 1, The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is withdrawing participation in the national Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) program.

The Sheriff’s Office will continue to participate and maintain its Georgia Law Enforcement Certification Program administered by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.

The Georgia program establishes its standards based on best practices and professional requirements for law enforcement agencies and is administered by some of the state’s most highly regarded professionals.

For an agency to be granted State Certification, it requires compliance with more than 130 standards, all of which the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has continued to meet or exceed every year, making it one of only 119 out of approximately 700 statewide law enforcement agencies to meet certification requirements.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Public Library (FCPL) Board of Trustees announced on Aug. 19 the selection of Anna Lyle as the sole final candidate for the position of Library Director. The director vacancy is due to the upcoming retirement of longtime director Jon McDaniel, who has served in that role since the library system was established in July 1996.

The Library Board began recruiting to fill the position in May, when McDaniel announced his plans to retire in December. Preliminary telephone interviews were conducted in July, and Lyle was the sole candidate selected for an in-person interview in August. A final vote to confirm her selection is scheduled for the Board’s regular meeting on Sept. 21.

Pending outcome of the vote, Lyle would assume the position of director in December.

Lyle has served as Assistant Director for Support Services at FCPL for 11 years, focusing on the library’s budget management, financial operations and human resource functions – a role

that involves her in every aspect of library operations.

Bringing 22 years of public library experience to the position LYLE of director, Lyle served as FCPL’s human resources manager from 1999 until her promotion to assistant director in 2004.

She was previously employed at Gwinnett County Public Library as a staff services manager and an information specialist.

Lyle holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, a Master of Arts degree in art history from Emory University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from Furman University.

She also holds certification as a senior professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by the HR Certification Institute, and holds a current license from the Georgia State Board for the Certification of Librarians.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Anna Lyle’s professional experience and integrity as our new director,” said Mary Helen McGruder, library board chairman. “We are looking forward to continuing the success we have enjoyed for the last 20 years under the direction of Jon McDaniel while also moving into the future with new ideas and innovations.”

FCPL serves all of Forsyth County with four library branches and offers a robust eLibrary collection. Two of the four branches were added since 2010, and the library collection includes almost 400,000 items. In addition, the library offers an abundance of programs and events for all ages. There are over 69,000 library cardholders and FCPL has some of the highest circulating library branches in the state of Georgia.

Under Georgia law, the Board must publicly announce up to three finalists at least 14 days before making a final decision. Details of applicant information are maintained in the FCPL human resources office.

When in need, please ask for help For the past few weeks I’ve been working on multiple stories involving domestic violence. I’ve talked to directors of local safe houses, heard from community members and read statistic after disheartening statistic.

It’s no surprise that domestic violence happens in all communities regardless of age, race, gender, religion or socio-economic status. It even happens in Forsyth and North Fulton counties, places we like to think are safe. While they are indeed wonderful places to call home, they are also not without their own dark secrets. As the newspaper you’re reading now has reported far too often lately, Forsyth and North Fulton are hardly immune to violent confrontations between family members that end in beatings, abuse and even death.

Even through all the upsetting interviews I’ve had lately, one message was clear — there are a multitude of available resources and kind people willing and eager to help those in need.

More than once I was asked if I was going to provide a list of numbers victims can call, and I have on each article I’ve written. But it still takes that incredibly courageous first step of picking up the phone and dialing those numbers for things to change. It is sometimes said that the first step is the hardest, and, for victims of domestic violence, truer words have never been spoken.

Recently, I talked to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office about how they help victims. I spoke with four people that day and each one said there are plenty of resources that cater to just about anything a victim might need. Their officers hand out pamphlets every time they go on a call, even if the situation doesn’t seem to be abusive.

Making victims aware of all those resources, however, seems to be the challenge.

One of the women I spoke with told me about her sister who had been in an abusive situation for eight years. Had she known about all the forms of assistance available to her, her sister said, she may have left sooner.

It is heartbreaking to know there are so many options, yet so many people - especially people who need them - aren’t aware and don’t reach out for help.

We as a community need to step it up and help fill the gap between need and knowledge. If we think someone we know is in danger, we should help them take that first step, which may be nothing more than admitting something potentially devastating is going on.

Domestic violence comes in many shapes and sizes and often doesn’t rear its ugly head until it’s too late. That needs to end.

When I first started writing about domestic violence, it was because there were so many murders and shootings.

I didn’t like discussing it because it’s not something you want to think about.

But I soon realized that the more knowledgeable people are, the better the victims in our communities will fare. So I wrote about it. Then I wrote about it some more.

The more I learned, the more it made me mad and upset.

It’s an uncomfortable topic, I know. But it’s something we need to start talking about.

The only way we can stop or at least lessen domestic violence is by increasing awareness and coming together to help one another. A great start would be saving the help-line phone numbers in my related story.

Early literacy program kicks off with beloved book character FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Clifford the Big Red Dog will visit all Forsyth County Public Library branches this month to help kick off “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten”, an early literacy program designed to help infants, toddlers and preschoolers develop the pre-reading skills they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

Clifford, a much-loved book and television character, will appear for stories and photos with children at six “1,000 Books with Clifford” events. The first event will be held at the Cumming Library Aug. 25 at 11:15 a.m. On Aug. 26, Clifford will appear at the Sharon Forks Library at 10:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. and at the Hampton Park Library at 6:30 p.m.

Clifford will visit the Post Road Library Aug. 27 at 11:15 a.m. and Aug. 29 at 11:15 a.m.

All the “1,000 Books with Clifford” events are free and

are intended for families with children under age five. No registration is required to attend.

As an added bonus, the library will be raffling off family four-packs to the Center for Puppetry Arts at the 1,000 Books with Clifford programs. All attending families are encouraged to enter the raffle.

“Clifford is coming to help the library kick off the ‘1,000 Books Before Kindergarten’ program because he is a familiar character to many young readers,” said Laura Bradley, program manager.

“Having a character they know and love is important to spark their interest in books and building their early literacy skills.”

skills required to become independent readers. And children that have trouble reading are more likely have trouble learning new skills and concepts.

“One of the easiest ways to help a child build their vocabulary and pre-reading skills is to read aloud,” Bradley said.

“At first, reading 1,000 books may seem like an unreachable goal. But if you read just one book at bedtime every night, then you can read 1,000 books in fewer than three years. Most board and picture books take only about five minutes to read aloud. If you commit to reading just 15 minutes a day, you can finish over 1,000 books in just one year.”

New Canton St. project snags over parking Roswell bureaucrats’ competing demands put businessman on horns of dilemma

ROSWELL, Ga. – Bill Plummer owns a nice property with frontage on Roswell’s Canton Street, perhaps the trendiest restaurant/entertainment quarter-mile in North Fulton.

That’s the good news.

Plummer got a taste of the bad news when he brought forward a plan to expand his 3,000-square-foot building at 980 Canton Street, adjacent to the recently closed 9 Street Kitchen.

He was the guest speaker Aug. 19 at the monthly Town Builders Breakfast sponsored

by Roswell NEXT, a business group that supports a better Roswell.

Plummer and restaurateur George Ippolito have a plan to introduce an Ippolito’s Italian

Restaurant on Canton Street.

But any new construction or renovations must first pass muster with Roswell’s Historic Preservation Commission.

While Plummer’s property is not historical, it is in the district and therefore changes must have HPC approval.

“They really liked my plan.

In fact they asked me to expand it,” Plummer said. “They wanted me to bring the building 55 feet forward so that Canton Street frontage would align with the other buildings on Canton,” he said.

The 980 Canton building is on a shotgun lot, meaning its frontage is narrow and the vertical side is long. The long side would face the private drive that serves the mixed-use townhouse complex behind his property.

trons will remember the lawn next to the former 9 Street Kitchen where patrons could picnic. That is Plummer’s front yard, which will disappear now to meet the HPC demands.

“It’s a 55-foot expansion now, almost double what I planned. But Ippolito’s is taking it all, so I had the architects draw up a new plan,” he said.

What he has now is a 12,000-square-foot project.

Plummer is also seeking a variance for one 3,200-squarefoot condo upstairs where he and his wife will live, which is not only permissible under the city’s Unified Development Code, it is the same as the townhouses behind him. Roswell allows businesses below and residences above.

However, when the plan came before the Roswell Planning Commission, they took exception to the four parking

Cumming Playhouse director to produce show

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — Linda Heard, longtime executive director of the Cumming Playhouse, is adding a new line to her resume — producer.

Heard, who has worked for the city for 26 years, has been operating the Playhouse, 101 School St., since 2004, when it first opened, but she now wants to take her experience to the next level.

Heard asked city officials if it was possible for her to produce her own show at the Playhouse.

“Of course the first answer is not as an employee,” Heard said. “So I established an LLC. It was my first intention that I would leave the city then be able to do some shows just like any other theater company.

But we had some discussions and they felt it could be worked out that I could stay and from time to time do a show.”

On Aug. 18, the Cumming City Council approved a theater license agreement between the Cumming Playhouse and

Proctor, Turner and Green LLC, Heard’s company.

Heard said her business will now be just another theater company producHEARD ing a show about once a year.

“I’ve doubled my work; it’s good and bad,” Heard said.

“I’m learning a lot about directing whereas before I was just the money person for the city, booking all the shows, taking care of the disbursements and advertising. Which I still do, but in the moonlight hours I’ll be trying to produce the show.”

Her opening act will debut Oct. 1 and the show will be “Smoke on the Mountain.”

“We’re well into rehearsals,” Heard said. “That show has been very popular at the Playhouse. It’s a hard act to follow, so we’re hoping we do a good job and people will like it.”

Her background with the Playhouse is something Heard hopes will help her.

That didn’t satisfy the planning commission. The RUMC parking lot is 925 feet from the proposed restaurant, and guidelines call for remote parking to be within 800 feet.

“No one has enough parking on Canton Street,” Plummer noted. “And the Historic Preservation Commission is taking what I do have.”

Too bad, says the planning commission. It is recommending he take 45 feet of the back of the expansion for four additional parking spots.

Now Plummer says he is between a rock and a hard place.

A simple expansion has morphed into shifting his building forward but no real expansion.

He goes before the Roswell City Council Sept. 16.

There, after 10 months and $50,000 in surveys and architectural plans, he hopes to come to reconciliation over what all agree would be a project that adds vibrancy to the Canton district.

Tech Innovation Center opens in Alpharetta Site ‘center of gravity for innovation in North Fulton’

By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – In keeping with Alpharetta’s tag line as the “Technology City of the South,” the newest instrument in its kit to spur on innovation opened Aug. 20.

The Alpharetta Technology Commission’s Innovation Center formally opened its doors on Webb Bridge Road.

The center is a 24/7 technology co-working space with event, office and conference room space.

“This is exciting stuff and it’s only going to get better,” said Mark Hubbard, CEO of the ATC. He described the innovation center as the “center of gravity for innovation in North Fulton.”

Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle said the center provides an important need in the technology community in Alpharetta and surrounding North Fulton.

“One goal of the commission is to connect technology companies with each other,” Belle Isle said. “We wanted to create a space where technology companies can come together and connect.”

Local state Sen. Brandon Beach said the center is integral to the pipeline of creating and keeping hi-tech jobs in Georgia.

“This is the only technology city of the South,” said Beach. “We as a state are committed to having cutting-edge infrastructure to help. You supply the ideas and we will supply the talent and the infrastructure.”

Badsha Das, of 8d Designs, a technology design company housed in the new Innovation Center, said the space was ideal for his company.

“There are lots of other companies here,” he said. “This feels like our place. This is for us.”

While other locations offer casual work space for companies, this is one specifically for tech startups.

Belle Isle said the effort was to create, foster and, importantly, retain technology companies in Alpharetta.

“This is the beginning point, but not the end in terms of technology and innovation in Alpharetta,” said Belle Isle.

Eagles look to soar over Raiders MILTON, Ga. – The Milton Eagles look to beat the Alpharetta Raiders for the fourth year in a row Friday, Aug. 28, in the first regular-season game for both teams.

Although Alpharetta lost most of their top skill players on both sides of the ball, including quarterback Austin King and defensive lineman Andrew Butcher, their offensive line remains strong.

Look for returning Raiders receiver Nick Carlton to be an impact player.

On Milton’s side of the ball, the Eagles saw 21 seniors graduate from last year’s team, but only five of them were major impact players. Look for quarterback David Moore behind offensive lineman Tyler Watson to have a big game.

Moore, a transfer from Texas, saw little action for the Eagles last year. Despite lack of playing experience, he is gaining interest among recruiters as a dual threat runner-passer.

Pride Lacrosse wins consecutive tournament championships FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Pride U13 Blue Lacrosse team won the Georgia Southern Shootout A bracket championship July 12 in Gainesville, Ga. The team also won the Georgia Southern Open B bracket championship June 21 in Peachtree City, Ga. The team finished the season strong with nine consecutive wins and an overall record of 19 and seven.

The team qualified and will compete in December at the Dick’s Sporting Goods National Lacrosse Championship Tournament located in Tampa, Fla. Pride Lacrosse is the summer feeder program for South Forsyth High School.

A family of Scouts

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — Aug. 8 marked a special day for the Brown family. It was the day the final two sons in the family, 18-year-old twins Drew and Jay, earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 1099. What’s more, their two older brothers, Chris, 24, and Kevin, 21, are both Eagle Scouts. And their father helped found the troop that awarded them all the highest achievement attainable in the Boy Scouts of America.

“Scouting certainly was a tremendous bonding opportunity for our family,” said the family’s patriarch, Matt Brown.

“It offered us an escape from our daily lives of work, school and technology, and we were able to participate in countless adventures that I am not sure we would have been exposed to without being involved.”

The family was first introduced to Scouting when Chris was in first grade and came home with a flyer regarding a Cub Scout round up. Chris was interested, so the family got involved in Tiger Cubs without really knowing what to expect since Matt had not been a Scout growing up.

“We soon found that we enjoyed the many opportunities for fun activities, and found we were participating alongside a great group of boys and adults,” Matt said. “For me as a kid, the Scouting program was not on our radar. Knowing what I know now about our family’s experiences, I feel like I missed out on some great things. During my experience as an adult in the Scouting program, I tried to make up for lost time.”

At first, Matt and wife Karen wanted their oldest son to participate in Cub Scouts because Chris was having fun and getting involved in unique activities.

In no time, the family’s Scouting focus added a generation when, in 2002 Matt joined other families to start Scout Troop 1099.

“Many of the Troop traditions that we started with during these early years still continue today,” Matt said. “I learned much about the Boy Scout program during those early years, and really saw what it offered and wanted to be an active participant in offering these opportunities to my sons and our community.”

“During this time I soon saw that the Boy Scout program offered opportunities for youth that were unique from any other organization,” Matt said. “With the backdrop of the outdoors, Boy Scouting offered my sons opportunities for leadership, community service, adventure, learning and tremendous growth.”

As the other Brown sons grew older, they saw how much Chris enjoyed Scouts and soon joined the fun. Younger brother Kevin, who was already interested in Scouts because of Chris, said his interest increased when a Scout recruiter came to his kindergarten class

and showed students how to light a fire. Drew and Jay said it was nice to have their twin in the program because they pushed each other to stay with it and finish.

Similarly, once Chris obtained the Eagle Scout rank, Matt said, his example and experience encouraged his brothers to have the same goal.

Chris said the main reason he continued all the way to Eagle Scout ranking was the people.

“It’s hard not to stay involved with an organization where you’re surrounded by good friends and leaders,” Chris said. “Having the support of family was an added benefit. I was lucky in that way. I know there are plenty of young men who find themselves involved with the Boy Scouts at some point along the way and find plenty of reasons to get out, but that was not my experience. For me, it was not always easy, it was not always fun, but I was always in a community of like-minded

supporters helping me through the journey.”

All boys credit Matt’s involvement as being an integral part in their Scouting stories.

“My dad was always there for all of us if we needed something,” Drew said. “He went on every outing, every meeting and every event and pushed us to do the same. If it wasn’t for Boy Scouts, I wouldn’t be the same person I am today and wouldn’t have the bond I have with my brothers and my dad.”

Chris said it’s been a great thing to be in the middle of a strong family who supports you at every turn.

“In the Boy Scouts, and in general, our experiences don’t always run perpendicular, but they are parallel,” Chris said.

“We might all take things in our own direction, but at the end of the day, we’re all coming home to a place of understanding. We all ‘get it.’ We know the peaks and the valleys and we can call each other on bluffs and push each other when we need it.”

Firefighter: Tommy Coleman retires after 43 years of service Continued from Page 1 ing adventures. We send our thanks to his family as well for all their support during his very memorable years. Congratulations on retirement.”

Coleman’s firefightering career started in 1972 when Forsyth County’s first volunteer fire department began. He volunteered solely for Forsyth until 1980, when he took a similar job with the Atlanta Fire Department, all while continuing to volunteer. In 1999, Coleman left the Atlanta station when Forsyth began to pay firefighters and, until Aug. 19, he had been there ever since.

During those 43 years, Coleman witnessed phenomenal growth in the department and Forsyth County. According to U.S. Bureau of the Census population estimates, the county went from 16,928 residents in 1970 to 174,520 in 2009. And, as Forsyth’s population multiplied 10 times over, Coleman was there every step of the way, helping to keep residents safe.

Remembering when the fire department was in a big steel barn and volunteers had bake sales and barbecues to raise money to buy new equipment, Coleman said, “Now we’re a multimillion-dollar-budget de-

Danny Bowman, fire department chief, said he knew Coleman from Atlanta and that Coleman had a name on the Northside. Bowman also said Coleman and the late former fire chief, Norris Bennett, set the groundwork for the department.

“He was a tough, unyielding firefighter,” Bowman said. “He was one who taught his troops

under his command well. He was always respectful and told me exactly what was on his mind. I don’t need someone coming in my office and telling me I’m doing a good job. I want to know when I can do it better and Tommy did that for me.”

Coleman, whose father was a volunteer firefighter for Roswell, said he has firefighting in his blood. His children, Andy and Melanie, grew up in fire stations with him, and Mel-

anie would even go on to marry a firefighter. Her husband of 21 years, Corey Kendrix, now a fire captain with Gwinnett County, said his father-in-law introduced him to fire service served as a mentor.

“Tommy always told me, as you progress in the fire service, never ask of anyone anything you’re unwilling or haven’t done yourself,” Kendrix said.

“He also taught me to be fair or as fair as possible and to treat everyone with kindness. Those two things have allowed me to progress in my career to the point I am now.”

Kendrix said, while he’s proud of Coleman, it’s time for him to move on and begin living his dreams of traveling with his wife, Angie.

Forsyth County Animal Shelter marks one-year anniversary FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Aug. 22 marked one year since the opening of the new Forsyth County Animal Shelter. The shelter is located off Ga. 400 at 4065 County Way in northern Forsyth County.

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported us during our first year,” said Shelter Manager Jeanie Curphey. “Those who have adopted animals, our great volunteers, those who have made donations and the rescue organizations with whom we work have all helped to make our first year a success.”

There are many options for those interested in assisting the shelter’s operations. The Forsyth County Animal Shelter is looking for those individu-

als who love spending time with animals and would like to make a difference. There are multiple volunteer opportunities available at the shelter, such as dog walkers, cat ‘cuddlers’ or groomers, and for assistance with special events.

Those interested in volunteering should visit the Forsyth County Animal Shelter to complete a volunteer application form.

The Forsyth County Animal Shelter has a wish list of items that assist staff and volunteers in caring for the shelter’s animals. These items range from dog and cat food to paper towels and disinfecting wipes.

I would have stayed in office, if I could, the rest of my life. I’m not planning on moving out of Cumming. I’ll be here in Cumming until the Lord calls me home.”

Pugh, who was first elected July 1992, said he has enjoyed his time and wishes he could do it again. He was the newest official on the council, aside from Welch. He too said he’s retiring due to his health.

“Serving on the Cumming City Council all these years has been a highlight of my life,” Pugh said. “Seeing so much growth and prosperity over the years in our town has been an honor.

However, it has now come time for me to step away from my elected position.”

Jeff Honea, city clerk, said qualifying for the open posts will be Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 and 2. There is a third post, Post 3, that will also have a retired term. It is currently held by Lewis Ledbetter, first elected in 1970, who said he is planning to run for re-election.

Forsyth gov’t publication receives Nnational award FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The National Association of County Information Officers (NACIO) has recognized a Forsyth County government publication for excellence through the 2015 NACIO Awards of Excellence Competition.

The Forsyth County 2013 Annual Report was named ‘Best in Class’ in the competition’s annual reports category.

The Forsyth County Annual Report is an informational tool providing taxpayers information about their local government and serving as a resource for those seeking information about the county.

The publication is prepared by the Department of Communications and is designed to provide information about recent county projects and accomplishments and about the many programs, services and amenities provided by the county.

This route requires delivery of the paper to a list of specific subdivisions each week. The newspapers must be bagged and then delivered to the driveway. Delivery person will be given a list of the subdivisions as well as a list of any specific addresses that have requested not to have the paper delivered.

Requirements for this work include the following: Spotless driving record, proof of insurance and citizenship, reliable car or truck, excellent references, and a history of reliability and honesty in previous work.

Delivery folks are independent contractors and are paid per newspaper delivered and a gas allowance is provided. Typically a route takes from 5-7 hours per week between bagging and driving the route.
