uliet Cohen can scarcely remember a time when water and sand and greenery did not surround her. She was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, bordered on all sides by the Atlantic Ocean, and spent every free moment in the sand and ocean. “I was given a lot of freedom to explore the island, which was rich in culture and natural beauty,” said Cohen, who left Puerto Rico at 18 to attend college in Miami. Now, as the executive director of Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK), she works to ensure the river which flows through Atlanta remains a healthy, vital lifeline for the region. Cohen’s instinct to be a caretaker for the environment took hold in her early years, fueled by class trips to learn about the island’s rainforests, mangroves, phosphorescent bays, coral reefs and more. The world outside was too compelling, and Cohen laughs when she remembers how frustrating sitting in a classroom was when the world beckoned her to come outdoors. “I have always preferred to be outside and to explore natural places… that is where I have always felt most alive,” said Cohen, who moved to Atlanta in 2003. “I knew from an early age that I felt passionately about protecting the environment, and building a career as an environmental advocate was a clear decision.” As a child, she dreamed of life as a marine biologist, sailing the Caribbean and working with dolphins, whales, and other marine life. But in college, at the University of Miami, the reality of the required laboratory work and the “hard sciences” was less intriguing. Cohen switched ► See INTERVIEW, Page 8

theinterview ▼ INTERVIEW, Continued from Page 6 from biology to political and environmental science, and found the perfect combination for a restless spirit. “Today, I am working to protect water resources, but I am a long way from the tropical world where I once lived,” said Cohen, who still returns home to Puerto Rico every few years to get her fix for ocean waters. “[In Atlanta] I have learned to love freshwater rivers.” After graduation, Cohen moved to Washington, D.C., met and married, Jeffrey, a Yale University graduate, and found work with an environmental education organization. A job transfer sent them to Charleston, South Carolina, where she began volunteering for the local Sierra Club chapter. Cohen took on more responsibilities with the club, eventually “morphing” her volunteer position into a full time position. “I was hooked on the advocacy side of environmental protection,” said Cohen of her years with the Sierra Club. “[Working alongside lawyers] I realized that becoming a lawyer would be the next step in building my career.” So she and her husband headed back to DC to begin law school at American University, then moved to Atlanta in 2003 to be close to her husband’s family when she became pregnant with her first child. “We decided to move here to be close to my in-laws who had [lived] here for decades, and Atlanta was a good place to raise a family,” said Cohen, who finished her final year of law school in Atlanta. Landing a two-year fellowship with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals as a Staff Attorney marked about the only time in Cohen’s career where environmental issues did not take center stage. She handled mostly immigration and criminal cases, gaining valuable experience in legal research and writing. But after the birth of her third child, Cohen spent a year at home, passing on her love of the environment fulltime to her kids, now aged 12, 10, and 7.
“[My husband and I] make a big effort to expose our children to the natural world, taking them hiking and paddling often. They are environmentally aware and have participated in numerous trash cleanups, collected water samples and as a result they care deeply about the natural world,” said Cohen. In 2008, she learned of a general consul position opening at Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK) through a colleague, and was drawn back into the world of environmental advocacy. “I immediately knew CRK was the perfect place for me because our missions aligned,” said Cohen. “I was also very impressed by the founding director, Sally Bethea. She was dynamic, assertive, and knowledgeable.” After six years as general consul, Cohen became the organization’s’ executive director in January 2015. Her focus is on raising the awareness of the Chattahoochee River Basin, its streams and tributaries, and its vital connection to every aspect of the region’s wellbeing. “Most people do not understand the connection between the water that flows from the tap in their homes, schools and businesses with the streams and lakes that surround them,” said Cohen, noting four million people are linked to the Chattahoochee through drinking water, power generation and recreation. “Understanding this connection is critical to mobilizing people to care and act to protect clean water. But the concern goes beyond the Chattahoochee, she noted, and includes all of our natural resources.
“We need to become more efficient in everything we do so that we can reduce waste,” said Cohen. “Waste creates pollution whether it be by air, land or water. Our children deserve to grow up in a clean, healthy environment, similar to what we grew up in.” Cohen said she stepped into a strong organization, with 21 board members and 7000 members, but says growing the membership and increasing the support base is always a goal. “We have accomplished a lot in 2015 including reaching the milestone of collecting and processing more than 5000 water quality samples, launching a new floating classroom, and hosting major river awareness events with more than 3,000 people engaged,” said Cohen. “[And] there is plenty of work yet to be done.” She says while CRK has worked as stewards and protectors of the Chattahoochee River since its founding in 1994, the “heroes” are the community members whose work is vital to their efforts. “My heroes are the Neighborhood Water Watch volunteers that take time from their busy days to collect and deliver a water sample to our offices. This requires commitment and passion. In our busy lives it would be easy for them to give up, but they do not, because they care about clean water and want to do something personally to ensure that this precious resource is protected.” For more information on Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and how to become involved in the organization, visit http://chattahoochee.org. ■

n Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, the word “Vibha” means many things, including radiant, shining, brightness, wealth and prosperity. In Atlanta, Vibha has come to embody all of those attributes through a nonprofit organization founded here in 1991 with the mission to make life better for underprivileged children through education and health care. Vibha has since expanded across the country and in India, and includes thousands of volunteers working to fulfill that mission. While the focus is on the many millions of children with needs in India, a
significant part of the group’s fundraising is also used for projects here in Atlanta and across the United States. Priti Sarda of Johns Creek has been volunteering with Vibha since 2003, when she and her family moved to Atlanta from Australia. She now serves as the Action Center coordinator, linking volunteers to projects, working on fundraising activities and assisting newer Vibha centers which have been established all over the country. “We were looking for opportunities to involve myself and my kids in the

Not All Groceries Are Created Equal. For some, customer service and products are a cut above the rest. At Suvidha Indio-Pak Groceries, with a location in Suwanee, they pride themselves on maintaining an extensive supply of Indian goods while also going the extra distance to provide for their customers. India is a land blessed with marvelous culinary variety and particularity. In order to provide for the vast Indian customers based in the northern suburbs of Atlanta, Suvidha provides customers from all Indian continental cultures a one stop shop with its huge selection of specialty foods including an enormous range of traditional spices and staples. Even though the Indian community eats plenty of meats in their diet, vegetables have a large place on the dish. For Suvidha, their produce selection remains fresh and extensive, often coming straight from their place of origin at extremely competitive prices. All kinds of vegetables and fruits, herbs and spices can be found almost always for a fraction of the price of the big box retailers. Fresh hand cut chicken and goat meat is available at the butcher shop within Suvidha. Whole cut chicken ready to cook is one of the favorites among others, simply due to the fact it is cut to customer specs and ready to go in their favorite recipe. Along with the quality meat, fresh produce, a huge selection of Indian basmati rice, Suvidha has a kitchen serving fresh to-go Indian meals, including fresh biryani, evening snacks such as Samosas, tandoori
delicacies and several items from an extensive menu prepared fresh on order for lunch or dinner at a fraction of the amount spent on food at traditional restaurants. With a Tandoor oven, plenty of traditional dishes can be made in minutes as customers shop.
Suvidha serves one of the best Samosas - a traditional peas and potato turnover. Suvidha Samosa’s are one of the best as confirmed by the customers who specially come to Suvidha to enjoy their favorite snack with evening tea. A family owned and operated business, Suvidha Indo-Pak Groceries started its operation in 2007. At the time, the only place to get proper Indian food and groceries was in Decatur. It would be unusual to spend all day getting groceries with such a drive. Due to the quality of service provided and a huge selection available, since opening its doors, the store has expanded its Suwanee operation twice, with 2 other locations including Kennesaw, GA and Morrisville, NC.

community,” said Priti. She and her husband, Shailesh, have two grown daughters, Neeraja and Khushboo. “Vibha offered the best avenue to volunteer in a flexible way.” The “marque” event for Vibha is the Dream Mile, a 5K/10K Run/5K Walk fundraiser to support the educational needs of 20,000 children each year. The event was first organized by a group of Georgia Tech students in October 1998 and attracted a few hundred participants to its debut event. The Dream Mile has since grown to eight other locations in the U.S. and one in India, drawing thousands of runners and walkers each year. In 2011, it was selected by Active.com as one the “Charities to Run For.” As the Dream Mile event grew and attracted more participants, Vibha moved up to the northern suburbs where its volunteer and sponsor base was also growing. “We moved north in 2012 [to Johns Creek] as the event was getting bigger, and last year we moved to Cumming to [accommodate the] increasing size of the event and to give a better experience to the participants,” Priti said. She said the Atlanta event has grown from a few hundred runners and walkers the first year to nearly 2,000 people last year. This year, she expects more than 2,500 participants for the 17th Annual Dream Mile, which will be held Sept. 19 at the Collection at Forsyth in Cumming. As the number of participants grows, so do Vibha’s goals for fundraising. Priti said last year the Dream Mile raised $150,000. This year the goal is $200,000. The money will be used to support more than 250 projects in India, along with 10 projects here in the United States. In Atlanta, Vibha primarily supports Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Atlanta Day Center for Women and Children. Priti’s evolvement from an “eventday only” volunteer to the Action Center coordinator grew over time as she got more involved in Vibha on a day-to-day basis. “My husband was the one who started with Vibha volunteering initially,” said Priti. “He took a step back as he went back to school for his MBA. But, as he was stepping back, my kids and I continued to increase our participation in Vibha volunteering.” Growing up, her daughters, now students at the University of Georgia, took an active role in organizing activities for Vibha Youth and served as youth leaders. Priti gradually took on more responsibilities for the multitude of pre-event tasks of planning, organizing, executing and ensuring the events run smoothly. She believes in the work of Vibha,
having seen firsthand the projects into which the dollars have flowed. The fact that Vibha is fully staffed with volunteers means 100 percent of the funds raised go directly to helping children. “It is amazing to see a volunteer journey like myself — starting small and growing into bigger roles,” Priti said. “The environment here and the causes we are working [provide] motivation to do more, and become part of the Vibha family. Everyone here is giving their time while handling their hectic routine with work, house, kids’ related activities.” During the Dream Mile event, Priti estimates she works 15 to 30 hours weekly for weeks leading up to race day. For the rest of the year, her hours vary but few weeks go by that she does not log in at least five hours. She is most passionate about the Door Step Schools, which Vibha is building in India for the children of migrating construction workers. In a country with 18 million street children, where one in five kids under 14 have no access to education, bringing school to where these kids are is important, Priti said. “The DSS is about bringing the school to the doorstep of the children who are not able to go to the regular school due to lack of opportunities,” she explained. “Construction workers normally migrate from the villages and small towns to a bigger city in search of the work. They are moving from one site to another as the work demands.” As a result their children cannot attend regular school and often resort to working as child laborers at construction sites. The DSS project opens a school at a construction site, and children come to learn there while their parents are working nearby. “They are taught according to their level of education and the records are maintained of their progress. These records are passed on to the new school when they have to move with their parents. Eventually they are able to go to local public school,” Priti said. Vibha has supported this project since its inception in 2006, and Priti said there has been great progress in reaching the estimated 40,000 children at construction sites who previously had no access to education. While she knows her work in Atlanta brings to life the projects overseas, Priti was able to personally visit two ongoing projects last year in India which completely changed her perception of her role in Vibha. “You can see the bigger impact in the life of those kids and on the society there, which gives me an indescribable feeling of doing something good.” For more information about Vibha, or to register for the Dream Mile event Sept. 19 in Cumming, visit www.vibha.org. ■

Adriana Trigiani takes her first novel and her hometown to the big screen By KIMBERLY BROCK
A
Author Adriana Trigiani.
uthor Adriana Trigiani’s first novel, “Big Stone Gap,” was originally published in 2000 and, after becoming wildly popular, spawned a series of books based on the same Virginia town. Now Trigiani is bringing the world of “Big Stone Gap”
to the big screen. The film is her debut as a screenwriter and director but, more than that, it’s a love letter to the mountains where she grew up. Trigiani is from Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and she filmed the movie entirely on location, featuring many locals. A wife and mother, Trigiani now lives in Greenwich Village with her husband, Tim Stephenson, the Emmy-winning lighting designer for “Late Show With David Letterman,” and their daughter, Lucia. But her devotion to these working people and lives lived out in a coal-mining town nestled deep in the Appalachian Mountains is evident in every scene. “I’ve always hated having people describe the Appalachian Mountains as the sticks. It’s anything but the sticks. It’s luscious. It’s velvet. It’s shimmer and patina. It’s opulent. And the people are all of these things and more. They’re funny and complex. So I took my giant circus tent of fury over those misconceptions and set out to portray my mountains,” she said. Trigiani’s devoted readers won’t be disappointed. The

film shines, not only for Trigiani’s fine writing, but also with an all-star cast led by Ashley Judd as the main character, Ave Maria Mulligan. Judd is joined by Patrick Wilson (whose father was born and raised in Big Stone Gap), Whoopi Goldberg, Jane Krakowski and Jenna Elfman. The movie is rated PG-13 and set to open Oct. 9. Set in 1978, “Big Stone Gap” tells the story of the ever-ordinary Ave Maria Mulligan, who lives a simple life with her mother, runs the pharmacy, directs “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine” outdoor drama, and hopes that Theodore Tipton, her best friend and the high school band director, will take their platonic friendship in a romantic direction. Ave Maria waits, and before she knows it, she turns 40. Now the old maid of Big Stone Gap, Ave Maria decides that happiness is for other people – that is, until a long-buried family secret throws her quiet life spectacularly off-course. “I was able to take this group of characters in a place I knew so well, and bring them to life on screen because I wanted the audience to experience this beautiful place and meet these characters that I revere,” Trigiani says. “Big Stone Gap, the place, is really the landscape of my dreams. I came from a big Italian family with a lot of siblings. Growing up in Virginia in the late 70’s, we barely had TV. But we had the Waltons. I loved the Waltons. I loved John Boy Walton. I learned a love of dialogue. I got into writing because it didn’t cost anything to write. You just needed paper and a pencil or a pen. No lessons, just stories.” And Adriana had stories. After graduating from Saint Mary’s College in South Bend, Indiana, Adriana moved to New York City to become a playwright. She founded the allfemale comedy troupe “The Outcasts,” which performed on the cabaret circuit for seven years. She made her off-Broadway debut at the
Manhattan Theatre Club and was produced in regional theatres of note around the country. She went on to win awards as a writer/ producer for The Cosby Show and A Different World and showrunner and executive producer of CityKids. She also wrote and directed the award-winning documentary, Queens of the Big Time. Adriana then wrote a screenplay called Big Stone Gap, which became the novel that began the series. “I spent a year and a half waking up at three in the morning to write Big Stone Gap before going into work on a television show. And then, ultimately, it took me fifteen years to make this film. But over that time, I became a better writer, which came in handy. Being prepared to rewrite on the spot, being flexible. That paid off while filming.” Trigiani’s love affair with the screen and a good story is further celebrated in her forthcoming novel. All the Stars in Heavens, set in 1935 against the backdrop of the golden age of Tinsel Town and the love affair of Loretta Young and Clark Gable, hits shelves Tuesday, October 13, hot on the heels of her directorial debut. Adventure, love, loyalty - these are the hallmarks of Trigiani’s work and life, and the themes she most wants people to come away with when they read her novels or see her new film. “When I’m writing I always think of E.B. White’s remark that whatever you write has to matter. Well, these characters, based on real people in a real place, matter. My work has always been at its heart about the struggles and triumphs of working people, and their quest for love, lasting love.” Big Stone Gap may be a love letter to her Appalachian home, but Trigiani’s heart is large as her stories, embracing us all. “I want Big Stone Gap to connect with people everywhere. I wrote it, not for awards or accolades, but for people. I want people to get together and go see this movie. Go out after, have fun, talk about the story’s themes. I put everything into it, everything I have to say in this life.” When asked what she believes Big Stone Gap says to us, Trigiani doesn’t hesitate. She’s always known. She’s been telling us all along. “Love gives you what you need, without expecting anything in return.” ■

getting to know her
Cheryl Hansen,
getting to know...
A legacy of service
By LORI WYNNE
W
hen you first meet Cumming resident Cheryl Hansen, her warmth, constant beautiful smile and twinkling brown eyes immediately draw you in. Hanson and her husband of 51 years, Don, have dedicated their lives to serving others, instilling their love of service in their five children and 19 grandchildren. This legacy of service began when Cheryl was a little girl in Utah.
NSW: WHEN DID YOU GAIN THIS DESIRE TO SERVE? “I was taught to work hard at an early age. Although my parents did not attend church regularly, I was drawn to it. I had several wonderful examples at church that taught me to love service,” Hansen said, adding, “If you really follow the savior and his example, you devote your life to serving.” Her husband’s work with the Forest Service and the national Smokey the Bear campaign brought them to Washington D.C., where they raised their children. Hansen served as the president of the Forest Service Wives Organization, on PTA, as a pollster, in Boy Scouts and Brownies. As daughter Becky Erickson said, “Her life’s work may seem like a jack-ofall-trades approach rather than a master of one particular talent or skill. However, Mom remains constant on her desire to serving others.” “My first love has always been teaching. I wanted to instill good values in others,” said Hansen, who worked as a public school teacher’s assistant in Washington for 17 years. “During the summer I taught the profoundly disabled students. I had a strong desire to learn about them and help them,” she said. Hansen chose part-time work to be with her kids. “They were our responsibility, our molding. I think they turned out great,” she said, smiling.
DID YOU PURPOSEFULLY TRY TO INSTILL A LOVE OF SERVICE IN YOUR FAMILY? Hansen said she taught her children that “service builds humility. It builds character. It keeps you humble. We need more people with humility.” Erickson said, “What I witness my mom doing is providing the silent, unnoticed, not-heralded, unpopular, non-sexy service ... cleaning a refrigerator and/or bathroom when a family moves, tending sick children so a mother can regain strength, transporting families without money for gas, pulling weeds in a neighbor’s yard so they can list their home to sell, hauling cut logs off a neighbor’s property when a tree has fallen, and so on. In today’s world, this type of service is considered work and too many of us try our best to avoid work. Not Cheryl. Mom is never above a rubber glove, a pair of work pants, a dirty task, an opportunity to work and serve.” This legacy of service was passed on to the Hansens’ children, three of whom have served full-time, two-year church missions in the Philippines, Mexico and Arizona. Currently, three Hansen grandchildren are also serving two-year church missions — in Samoa, Japan and Finland.
16 | northsidewoman.com | september2015
The Hansen family has additionally produced four Boy Scouts who attained the rank of Eagle. Even when the family is apart, Hansen said, “Service binds you together.” When her adult children organized a family cruise to Belize, her teenage granddaughters collected and assembled toiletry kits and church supplies with other local church youth to be given to people in Belize. “When you see a need and are able to fill it, it gives you satisfaction. It gives your life meaning and significance,” Hansen said.
AFTER YOUR CHILDREN WERE GROWN, WHAT DID YOU DO AS EMPTY NESTERS? “We always planned to serve a full-time, 18-month church mission,” she said. Their mission was self-funded, so they sold their home in Virginia at the height of the market in 2006, making enough to pay for their mission and a home in Georgia, where a majority of their children and grandchildren reside. Hansen felt it was a true blessing to be able to afford it all. From 2007-2009 the Hansens served in Samara, Russia, as church education system missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. “We loved the Russian people. We grew up learning Russia was the enemy. We get over there and find out the people are so loving. Because we were older, they looked out for us. It’s a beautiful culture with holidays and costumes. They love their families and their heritage. “The Church provided many humanitarian goods to Russian orphanages. Furniture for the schools and dormitories, equipment for gardening,” Hansen said, mentioning she also spearheaded a group that made 20 quilts for newborn babies in a home for unwed mothers, led an English Club where Russians came to practice speaking English once a week, taught a young-adult bible-study class with her husband and participated in community cleanup events.
DID LIFE SLOW DOWN AFTER MOVING TO GEORGIA? “No, from 2009-2011 we were asked to be assistant managers and then managers of our church’s regional food pantry in Tucker, Georgia.” This volunteer assignment required the couple to drive from Cumming to Tucker three times a week. “It was physically demanding. I got a lot stronger and gained endurance,” she said with a laugh. The purpose of the food pantry is to help sustain life until people can get back on track. “We saw people who were really struggling. We tried to give them hope and (help them) feel comfortable there.” Her reason for accepting the assignment? “We wanted to serve. We had periods of time when we needed help. We have good health and wanted to return what we had been given.” While serving at the regional storehouse, they also organized over 200 volunteers to send humanitarian food and goods to victims of tornadoes in neighboring states. “Our trucks were on the way before the storm hit hard,” she said “After our time at the storehouse, from 2011-2013, Cheryl helping at Welfar e Center & Tucker we were asked to be the Bishop's Storehouse, August 2 014. church service mission coordinators. We coordinate the volunteers at the storehouses, church buildings and keep records and do training,” she said. “People want to serve. People want to put meaning in their lives. They just need to know where to go.”
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2016? “At 71 and 74 years of age, we are making preparations to serve another full-time, 18-month-long international church mission. “This (service) is the way to find true joy in life. I don’t think I’ve done that much. It’s just what you do.” ■

herith Reid is a dreamer in action. Visitors to her roadside store at the corner of Shiloh and Majors in Cumming can literally see her dreams coming true. The Creekside Corner Store, which Reid opened this past May, is a cozy gift shop and produce stand providing unique local gifts and produce. A place where people stop to shop and stay to visit, the store was the apex of a journey that had a heartbreaking start just two years earlier. In 2013, she and her first husband were living in East Cobb with their five children when tragedy struck. “My husband died of a massive heart attack in our home in front of our 7-year-old twins,” she said. The family’s world 18 | northsidewoman.com | september2015
and lifestyle was changed in an instant. Looking back, she says she is so proud of her children (Deja, 19, Jade, 17, Dru, 13, and 10-year-old twins Israel and Isa) and how they have dealt with their father’s death. The twins gave the family comfort by saying, “Daddy’s in heaven now.” Raising five kids and managing the family home single-handedly didn’t leave the widow much time to date or dream, but she missed interacting with people. While she wasn’t looking for a knight in shining armor, she found one in Stacey Reid of Cumming on Match.com. “We connected immediately and knew this was something special. I told my mom after our first date, I wanted to marry Stacey.” When she saw her soon-to-be second husband’s family home and property located at 7404 Majors Road,
she was immediately struck with the beauty and history of the place. The dreamer inside her was reawakened as she recalled always wanting to own a restaurant. “Stacey’s mother is a wonderful cook. She has some delicious recipes,” Reid said, adding her new husband’s synergy created a dream plan for the location that was known in the past as Pop’s Corner Market.
NSW: HOW DID THE CREEKSIDE CORNER STORE GET STARTED?
“I wanted the opportunity to combine home and business. A place where my kids can come and be with me. I feel at home here in the produce stand and gift shop. I love interacting with people. I wanted to do something with the
PHOTOS BY SUZANNE PACEY/STAFF
situation that has been given to me and my family. I was raised in Stone Mountain and all of my kids were born at Northside Hospital. We love it here in Cumming and feel very welcome here.”
WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS FOR CREEKSIDE CORNER?
“By 2016 I would like to expand on the property to include my mini donkeys and chickens. Stacey would like to build a feed-and-seed store. I still have my dream of a standalone biscuit trailer on the property, too.
DESCRIBE THE PRODUCTS AT CREEKSIDE CORNER.
“Rustic home decor, specialty condiments, unique gifts, some local honey, produce and fresh eggs. We will sell pumpkins in the fall and Christmas trees in the winter. I’m always looking for Georgia-produced products to sell. If Stacey and Cherith Reid.
you are a local artisan, I would love to meet you and see your product. “Bring the family and stay for a while. Come and enjoy some old-fashioned Coca-Colas on our made-toorder swing bed. We have a couple of fire pits ready for roasting marshmallows. All of my customers become my friends.”
DO YOU HAVE A DAILY AFFIRMATION THAT YOU USE TO GET THROUGH THE DAY?
“Don’t sweat the small stuff. After all my kids and I have been through, I see life in a different perspective. I realize that life is short and precious. I have started running on the greenway and just embracing the great things that Cumming has to offer.” Now Cumming has one more great thing to offer: Creekside Corner and its dreamer/owner Cherith Reid. ■ september2015 | northsidewoman.com | 19

How did you get your pieces into a gallery in New York City?

I literally walked in with an iPad of my initial portfolio and, after several attempts, I was finally able to secure a meeting with the gallery owner. They liked my work and then selected some of my pieces to feature in the gallery.

“
T
he COLORS of Michael MIRABELLA” opened at Roswell’s Sedgwick Gallery in August, showcasing once again the photography of a New York native-turned Alpharetta resident who borrowed a friend’s camera 31 years ago and now has photography collections on display in New York City and metro Atlanta. What gallery attendees come to see is Mirabella’s shimmering take on the natural world, fantastical compositions in which color and light come together to reveal exquisite beauty in architecture, nature and cityscapes. Mirabella’s “day job” in the technology industry for businesses such as Apple, IBM and now SAP America has meant dividing his time between NYC and Alpharetta, his home of 20 years. Add to that travel a wanderlust that has taken him across Europe, the Americas and the Hawaiian Islands – camera always ready – and it’s easy to see how a hobby has grown into a passion that has produced enough photos to fill galleries and restaurants in NYC and the local metro area. It’s safe to say, however, that Mirabella’s first love was sports, not photography. A two-sport college athlete, he attended the University of Albany where he was a football running back and a baseball catcher, graduating in 1979. Five years later, he was heading to Greece when a friend loaned him a camera that forever altered the way he and, later, his son and namesake would see the world around them. In July 2014, the father-son team billed as Michael & Michael Mirabella

When it comes to photography, who inspires you the most?
My son is an aspiring photographer living out in Colorado. He photographs a lot of nature and his work inspires me. Peter Lik, a very famous photographer, is also an inspiration to me. Although he is far more accomplished than I am, I feel like our work and style is similar. unveiled their images in the Earth & Steel Photography Show at Sedgwick Gallery. In addition to traveling for work, this past year alone has seen Mirabella trekking off to London, Geneva and Dublin, taking over 1,500 photos along the way. He hopes to continue traveling the globe and pursuing his passion for photography.
Do you see yourself being a photographer forever?
Absolutely! It creates a great balance in my life.
How do you decide what you want to take photographs of?
It’s hard to explain but it’s honestly just what I see. I see a contextual image with a subject matter that strikes me and I take a picture of it and try to create something of interest and value. ■

Italian Homes Transitioning Traditions
A
s an Italian designer living in the States, the most common question people ask me is what is the latest design trend in Italy? The general impression of the typical Italian home is one that is furnished with very heavily ornate classical furniture, marble floors and fresco walls. In reality, many Italians like Americans, are transitioning their homes. The new trend in decorating and accessorizing has changed considerably in the last few years. Whether you are living by the Amalfi Coast or the Tuscan countryside, the key word is simplicity. Italians have embraced a fresh and more updated look, keeping it sophisticated and elegant. The Italian lifestyle has changed and so has their home décor, reflecting more and more of the way Italian people use their living spaces. The typical traditional family has evolved to a modern one where needs and necessities are different from those of the past. Their
22 | northsidewoman.com | september2015
day to day life is much faster than the pace it used to be and people spend less time in their homes, however when they do, they like to be surrounded by an open and bright environment. The colors are much lighter, monochromatic and comfort is essential. Very subtle upholstery and furniture with slicker and cleaner lines are a must, along with large pieces of wall art and larger statement objects of art are used to accessorize spaces where people like to enjoy and relax. Touches of colors are always welcomed, this is achieved with fresh flower arrangements or live plants. Kitchens have always been and still are the heart of the Italian home, a place where working men and women still enjoy spending part of their free time cooking for the family or baking with their children. But those copper pans hanging on the walls and the small ceramic tiles are no longer there. Today’s
kitchen boasts of Stainless steel, glass and stone. Clutter free counter tops affording ample workspace. Cabinet drawers that host groceries, small appliances and kitchen gadgets are installed making it all esthetically appealing and functional, creating a perfect combination for an organized household. As values and traditions are still well rooted in a culture where change is not always welcome, Italian people have transitioned their homes to a more suited space for young generations to grow. ■

5 Tips for a Terrific Tailgate W
By TAYLOR WRIGHT
TA
ith football season kicking off, football fans across the South are heading to their favorite college towns to see their teams play. This pre-party has become a tradition that almost every fan wants to be a part of. Consider these tips to have a tailgate your guests won’t forget!
K
E
1. LESS IS MORE
ei fi v n o r
5
de th a s & sid ti f or e w o p sn me
At tailgate parties, people eat on their own schedule, and they often come back for seconds and thirds. Finger foods and items people can eat while standing up are a great way for fans to grab something quick. Guests may find it difficult to sit and eat in the middle of the action.
2. BE AWARE OF THE SUN Once you’ve arranged your food display, be aware that various goodies can go into “overtime” due to the heat of the sun. After two hours, begin tossing foods, especially those with dairy. If the
temperature reaches 90 degrees, do so within one hour to avoid foodborne illness.
3. STAY HYDRATED Alcohol is typically a “starting player” at tailgates. Although it can lead to fun, it can also lead to dehydration. The night before, freeze water bottles that can serve as ice packs and, as they melt, cold water to drink before heading into the game. Consider spiking your water with fruit for a fresh touch.
4. REPURPOSE Use a six-pack cardboard container as a condiments holder. Try a muffin-paper liner for a disposable lid on your drinks, and insert a straw for a bug-free beverage. Bring along an empty, plastic storage tub as a way to tote home dirty dishes.
5. GET ORGANIZED
Too much stuff and not a lot of space? Fill a rolling, clear, plastic set of drawers with materials. When you arrive to your tailgating spot, all the items you’ll need will be at your fingertips in an organized container. ■

FUR STOLE:
Whether you choose real or faux, a fur stole is a great way to celebrate the fact you survived the steamy hot summer and are ready to embrace the cooler fall temperatures. Fur stoles can be dressed up or down. Wear them with your favorite denim jeans, leather pants or cocktail dress. Look for a comfy sweater with a long fur stole attached down the front for instant on-trend fashion. At the Atlanta Apparel Mart, I saw some wonderful infinity scarves with ombre dyed fur in a neutral blush color that would be a great fashion staple this fall. WORLD WAR FASHION OF THE 1940S BY TIA CRAIG
By LORI WYNNE
F
inding fresh and fabulous fall trends can be flummoxing, even for designers who create them. Often they find their inspiration from styles or people from the past. I couldn’t help but notice the fall 2015 runway fashions were filled with designs that are reminiscent of styles from the 1940s.
Here are some of my favorite fall trends that can be used in 2015:
FRINGE:
It’s everywhere! On handbags, ponchos, sweater jackets and jewelry. Fringe creates visual interest without adding bulk. While wearing fringe, you can’t help but feel more fluid in your movements. You must include fringe in your wardrobe this season. My personal favorite is the Freya fringe necklace by Stella & Dot.
FLOUNCE HEMS:
The designers are listening to the consumers who do not feel comfortable in pencil skirts. Frankly, I think they are bored with creating fashion around this staid wardrobe basic. Flounce hems are fun and playful, yet the designers have toned them down to be worn with coordinating tailored jackets for work. Look for them in suiting fabrics, tweeds and denim.
FACETED JEWELRY:
Bling is back! Get out your grandmother’s brooches, large clip-on earrings and statement necklaces with faceted stones. If you didn’t inherit any from your grandma, check out Stella & Dot’s wonderful choices in updated mixed
metals that can be used with any color scheme. Don’t wait for a gala or a night out at the symphony to wear it. Pair it with your casual outfits as well.
FABULOUS “GRANNY” SHOES:
Finally, a break from those “hoochie mama” stacked sole heels that no one could wear for any length of time, let alone walk in them properly. The designers Stuart Weitzman, Salvatore Ferragamo and Tory Burch give us plenty of options that are super fashionable and super comfortable. The heels are lower and a “proper” width on pumps and feminine loafers. Your granny would be proud to see you wearing such a sensible shoe. Look for the updated versions in metallic tones and unusual colors to make it your own style in 2015.
FINAL TIP:
To look seasonally appropriate and comfortable in the fall even if the temperature still feels like summer, wear lightweight fabrics in deeper colors. For example, black or brown linen pants, lightweight silk or polyester flowing blouses in marsala, navy, olive, etc. Put away your thin strappy sandals. Instead, choose sandals with wider straps in darker colors or a peep-toe bootie. ■

Ask the Vet
QUESTION:
If my pet suffers from anxiety, are there any medications that can help?
ANSWER:
P
ets sometimes suffer from anxieties just like we do. Thunder storm anxiety, otherwise known as thunder storm phobia, is one of the more commonly seen anxieties that some pets may experience. Other pets may suffer from separation anxiety. Regardless of the type of anxiety that your pet may suffer from, behavior modification medications can help, and in some instances, even make a huge difference in their quality of life. As responsible pet owners, we may struggle to make the decision of trying medications such as fluoxetine (Prozac) or alprazolam (Xanax) with our pets because we may have concerns about changes
in their personality such as sleepiness or heavy sedation. When medicated correctly and with the right dosage and monitoring, these medications are very helpful and well tolerated. If your pet suffers from anxiety, ask your veterinarian if your pet may benefit from anti-anxiety medication. Under certain circumstances and depending on the type of anxiety that your pet may be experiencing, training may be recommended along with medication. If you would like more information on certified trainers, you are welcome to contact us at The Village Animal Hospital, 770.754-1234. ■

Bored in the bedroom? It’s time to get excited again! O
ur romantic life, like many things , can sometimes become mundane and even begin to feel like another chore if everything remains the same each time. Therefore, it is highly important to spice things up in the bedroom as often as possible and one of the easiest ways to do this is simply changing the position you have sex. You may be surprised how easy and effective these little tweaks to already familiar positions may be. Now, I know we have all heard and probably tried the following positions, but let me offer some extra tips and tricks to increase their appeal and effectiveness.
WOMAN ON TOP:
Have him lay on his back with his knees bent and feet flat on the bed, put one of your legs outside his thigh and the other between his legs. This will allow you to control intensity and direction while simultaneously creating friction increasing the chance for a female orgasm.
MAN ON TOP:
Begin as you normally would for the missionary position, but then move your legs between his angling his body in a forward pose squeezing your body. This increases friction which offers benefits for both of you.
STANDING UP:
Running short on time? This is the perfect solution. It will make him feel very manly and you feel very sexy all at the same time. Although, standing requires a bit of flexibility and stamina it can also be very intense and passionate. To begin, wrap both of your legs around his waist, hold on tight and let his arms swallow you as if you have been carried away. This steamy stance will allow greater intensity and heightened stimulation. Physical intimacy is meant to be enjoyed and so incredibly vital for not only your health but your relationship, try not to be intimidated or scared, we all can use a little excitement and change. It’s time to assume the improved position and enjoy. Please always remember in all sexual activity, practice responsibly and safely.
