A dive into dementia

Virtual Tour provides a look at life with impairments By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidwoman.com
I
magine a world where your thoughts enter and exit randomly, where the sounds in your head compete, with the sounds from outside, where simple tasks are nearly impossible to complete and plans made are soon forgotten. This the world of dementia, and about five million people in the United States, primarily elderly, must navigate this altered reality every day. Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent form of dementia, progressively impacting memory, behavior and language. To the caregiver or loved one, dementia is an experience they often cannot empathize with, or fully understand, leading to frustration on both sides. Roswell-based psychologist P.K. Beville is changing this reality, drawing back the curtain to reveal the world through the eyes of an individual with dementia. Through the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) she developed in the early 2000s, Beville is changing the way caregivers, family and first responders understand and interact with patients. “The fact is no matter how much training one received on what is happening to the people living with dementia, they could never understand the struggles. We just have to see how they live in their world. That [was] the problem I wanted to solve,” said Beville, one of the nation’s leading experts in geriatric care. She has been involved in elder care since 1983, first conducting psychological assessments on the elderly with behavioral problems, then consulting in the long-term care industry to create supportive and sensitive care for individuals with dementia. Along the way she published several articles on aging and dementia and founded Second Wind Dreams in 1997 to help fulfill wishes from the elderly. Since its founding, Second Wind Dreams has helped more than 2,000 people with their requests. Over the years, Beville gained a unique insight into the mind of the person with dementia and used that knowledge as the foundation for what would eventually be the Virtual Dementia Tour. She submitted the concept as part of her doctoral dissertation in 2001. The support she received from her peers to put the concept into reality convinced her of the need for the VDT. “I’ve changed lots of things, and the VDT has grown tremendously since my dissertation,” said Beville. “It never occurred to me that it would turn into this ‘product,’ for the lack of a better word.” Since 2003, more than two million people in 17 countries have gone through the VDT, and if the testimonials and thousands of YouTube videos are any proof, it is life changing. Most are in tears after emerging from the 12-minute tour — out of frustration, or out of guilt — but everyone expresses a new sense of understanding and empathy for dementia. During a VDT experience, trained facilitators guide participants through common everyday tasks and exercises while outfitted with patented devices that alter their senses, such as goggles to impair vision,

headphones to alter sound and gloves to impact tactile response. As participants go through the VDT, handicapped by the devices that enhance the experience, Beville said their mannerisms begin to mirror the responses from individuals who have dementia. The patented VDT is delivered in large recreational vehicles which can be taken anywhere to conduct the tour, as well as a virtual version that can be taught on site as needed. Currently there are five RVs in the United States, one in the United Kingdom, and Beville hopes to expand the reach to meet the demand for training.

The fact is no matter how much training one received on what is happening to the people living with dementia, they could never understand the struggles. We just have to see how they live in their world. ”
A few months ago, I had the opportunity to take the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT), and experience firsthand the world from the view of someone suffering from dementia.
P.K. Beville
I learned when you are with the person going through this unimaginable situation, it is important to let them know they are the most important person in the room. I learned you can change the energy in the room simply with eye contact, using their name, or even a simple hug.
Having a parent with this illness, it was important for me to try and understand how my father feels as he struggles to complete everyday activities. What an eye opening experience. I honestly can't say enough about it. From the beginning, I was very disoriented. I needed assistance the entire time to try and make sense of what was going on. There was too much noise, no one was paying attention to me, and I couldn’t complete many of the simplest of tasks. The tasks I was able to complete, such as folding laundry and packing a suit case, were ones I was familiar with and felt comfortable in completing. After the tour I was in tears. I was overwhelmed with sadness for my dad, and the recognition of how frustrated he must be on a daily basis. It is nearly impossible to understand the effects of a disease that none of us have ever experienced. Often the person suffering from the disease cannot adequately describe what is happening to them. But the VDT can give insight. I believe it is about learning....and about respect.
Dementia does not rob someone of their “personhood”; it is our reaction to them that does. The more we can see their point of view the more we can understand their needs. If you ever have the opportunity to go through the Virtual Dementia Tour—take it. I guarantee you it will be an eye opening experience. —Suzanne Pacey Publisher

“My vision is to have a lot of the RVs across the U.S. and Canada, as well as other countries,” she explained. “Let’s face it, not many of us are able to get to where the RVs are located, so we need to bring it to them.” Beville recently received a grant from the state of Georgia to make the VDT available to every skilled nursing home in the state, beginning with about 170 sites and growing from there. Initially, Beville envisioned the VDT to be used primarily for caregivers caring for individuals with dementia, but she quickly learned its benefits were universal. “The people I targeted [initially] for the VDT were caregivers, but then it grew to family members, then to hospitals and the general public,” explained Beville, who is a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Alzheimer’s Planning. Recently there has been a growing interest from fire departments, police departments, city planners and others to go through the VDT. “It is important for anyone who deals with the public to understand that when you walk into a room, you know three out of five people in that room have been impacted in some way by dementia,” said Beville. She has a unique understanding of the struggles that people with dementia have, gained over a three-decade career devoted to the subject. That knowledge has allowed her to replicate the experiences in the VDT in a way few have the skills to do. Beville notes she has no personal

experience with dementia through a family member, which allows her to clinically study the disorder without being “wed to the dementia plight” in a subjective way. “I’ve been observing the [dementia behaviors] since 1983, and how people with dementia behave, what triggers them, what leads to certain outcomes,” said Beville. “What I have concluded is the things that people are going through are ‘normal’ within the confines of the disease.” Looking forward, Beville says she envisions an interactive museum on dementia where the general public could go through a modified version of the VDT and get a “debriefing” from a care provider at the conclusion of the tour. “I have a lot of plans, but I’m 63, so I need to get moving,” she laughs. ■

sing music as behavioral therapy has been around longer than the written word, and likely as long as the spoken word, with references to the benefits of music appearing in the works of Aristotle and Plato in Ancient Greece. But the use of music in a clinical setting to help patients suffering from memory loss, speech functions, cognitive skills and other dysfunctions is a relatively new therapy in the United States, with its roots in the military. Soldiers returning from battle during World War I with posttraumatic stress disorder saw improvements when music was part of their treatment, according to experts in music therapy. Beginning in the 1980s, music therapy was found to have benefits for people with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias in managing the myriad of issues associated with the disorders, said Jamie George, director of the George Center for Music Therapy (GCMT) in Roswell. “Evidence-based research shows music therapy improves memory recall, language and cognitive functions, stimulates positive interactions and decreases agitated and aggressive behaviors,” noted George, who is a licensed and board certified music therapist. Music therapy was found to stimulate the parts of the brain that were being affected by dementia, creating new synapses and “exercising” the brain. GCMT has music therapy programs in place in 20 senior communities throughout the Metro Atlanta area, serving nearly 300 people in a variety of programs. Clients are based in memory care, assisted living and independent living communities, with programs geared to the level of need, said George. Music therapy programs are most predominant in memory care and assisted living centers as treatment options, but they are also being added to independent living settings as more adults seek to keep their minds active. Music therapy can vary from “goal oriented” activities focused on improving functions and behavior, to an intergenerational approach with preschool children, and even teen rock bands, interacting with the elderly for shared enjoyment. The benefits with music therapy in the senior settings can be seen every day, said George, and has proven results in people with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, as well as those

who have limited functions as a result of strokes. Music is an international language that nearly everyone responds to and has connections. “Most people associate music with important events and a wide array of emotions,” said George. “Every culture uses it, and it is the universal language. Used appropriately, music has few negative outcomes and many benefits.” Most of the GCMT clients have music therapy at least once a week, with benefits often Licensed and board certified music therapist being seen at the onset. “We certainly have curves where we may see a huge improvement in the first six months, then look to change up the goals to see continued improvement,” said George. “That’s our job as music therapists to find what is most successful.” To be licensed and board certified, music therapists must have their master’s degree, although the profession is moving toward a doctoral degree. Therapists must have 1,200 clinical hours before going for board certification, she noted, and they must be proficient in guitar, voice, piano and drums. George, who was board certified in 2007, was a voice performance major at Western Michigan, and received her master’s degree from the University of Georgia. ■

HOW MUSIC CAN AID IN DEMENTIA CARE Early stage: • Go out dancing or dance in the house. • Listen to music that the person liked in the past. • Experiment with various types of concerts and venues. • Encourage an individual who played an instrument to try it again. • Compile a musical history of favorite recordings. • Use song sheets or a karaoke player so the individual can sing along with old-time favorites. Middle stage: • Play music or sing as the individual is walking to improve balance or gait. • Use background music to enhance mood. • Opt for relaxing music — a familiar, non-rhythmic song — to reduce behavior problems at nighttime.
SUBMITTED BY ARTIST JOHN FEIGHT
Music therapist, Melissa Sorensen, leads intergenerational preschool program at Arbor Terrace at Crabapple in Roswell with preschoolers from Primrose School of Roswell North.
Late stage: • Utilize the music collection of old favorites that you made earlier. • Play soothing music to provide a sense of comfort. • Exercise to music. • Do drumming or other rhythm-based activities. • Use facial expressions to communicate feelings when involved in these activities.
HOW ART BENEFITS ALL SENIORS Leisure art, as well as directed art therapy, is an increasingly popular activity in assisted living communities. There are many benefits to exposure to art including: • Increased self-awareness • Relieving stress, anxiety and confusion • Improving motor skills • Improving cognitive skills • Helping to cope with transitions • Facilitating communication Older adults tend to have more age-related functional impairments that affect vision, hearing and balance, which can lead to chronic pain, anxiety and depression. Creating art projects can take the focus away from daily concerns and on to the creative process. Painting, flower arranging and clay are the most common art mediums used at communities. As long as safety is taken into account, the possibilities for artistic creation are endless and include: • Sculpture • Jewelry making • Weaving • Photography • Collage Music therapist Hannah Seger Lytle, sings with Jeanette Winton at Manor on the Square in Historic Roswell.
Art therapy for dementia patients Art projects can create a sense of accomplishment and purpose. They can provide the person suffering from dementia — as well as caregivers — an opportunity for self-expression. An Alzheimer’s patient, unable to grip a paintbrush, can be quite successful creating a visual masterpiece dipping sponges in multiple paint colors. When planning an art activity for someone with middleto late-stage Alzheimer’s, keep these tips in mind: • Keep the project on an adult level. Avoid anything that might be demeaning or seem child-like. • Build conversation into the project. Provide encouragement, discuss what the person is creating or reminiscence. • Help the person begin the activity. If the person is painting, you may need to start the brush movement. Most other projects should only require basic instruction and assistance. • Use safe materials. Avoid toxic substances and sharp tools. • Allow plenty of time, keeping in mind that the person doesn’t have to finish the project in one sitting. Information provided by aplaceformom.com

Make the most of retirement

List localizes tips from howto guides for making the most of retirement By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer
I
t’s been 47 years since Woodstock, and no better statistic sums up how far we’ve come from the hippie dippie days of yore than this: About 10,000 baby boomers are retiring. Daily. In other words, if you and Sha Na Na’s Henry Gross are about the same age (65), or if Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick is practically as old as your mother (77 in October), then welcome to retirement – now or sometime soon – Woodstock Nation. While retiring can be rife with concerns regarding health and wealth, one rosy fact might ease the transition: Now at least you’ll have time for the pursuit of happiness. As unalienable rights go, this one seems particularly well suited to baby boomers, owners of the first Barbies and inventors of Beatlemania. Since this generation of retirees also spent the last 25 years supporting the “For Dummies” book franchise, publishers wisely anticipated a demand for how-to manuals on having fun while qualifying for Medicare, and responded accordingly. What that means for 76 million Americans of a certain age is they can find advice aplenty

for their next stage of life in books like “How to Retire Happy, Wild and Free,” “The Baby Boomer’s Guide to a Rockin’ & Rollin’ Retirement,” “Retirement is Fun: A New Chapter” and Stella Rheingold’s “101 Fun Things To Do In Retirement: An Irreverent, Outragious & Funny Guide to Life After Work.” To illustrate just how entertaining retirement can be in North Fulton and Forsyth counties, we checked out Rheingold’s tips and, using some chapter titles as guides, assembled a sampling of activities ideal for anyone retiring now – or in 5, 10 or 15 years. What we found was far more than 101 fun things to do in the area, meaning local residents of any age couldn’t be better positioned to let the good times roll.
Music Music Music
Music helped define the newest generation of retirees, and music of all strains can serenade them still. Two concerts remain in this year’s lineup of Roswell’s free Riverside Sounds Concert Series, on Sept. 3 and Oct. 1 (www.roswellgov.com). Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Sundays on the River Concert series continues Sept. 11 (www. chattnaturecenter.org). Alpharetta’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre has 10 events remaining in 2016 (www.vzwamp.com). About once a month, the Autrey Mill Unplugged series in Johns Creek serves up candlelit evenings of live music in a natural, historic setting (autreymill. org). The LIVE! In Roswell concert series is among many offerings at the Roswell Cultural
Arts Center (www.roswellgov.com). Three more performances in 2016 remain for the Michael O’Neal Singers all in Roswell (www.mosingers. com). And everything from bluegrass and country to holiday orchestral music will be coming up at the Cumming Playhouse (Playhousecumming.com).
Get Political
With the presidential election two months away, there’s still time to connect with campaigns. Choose from organizations dedicated to Democrats (fultondems.org, fcdpnc.org), Republicans (www.fultongop.org, forsythgop. org), or Libertarians (www.lpgeorgia.com).
Tend Your Garden
If having a green thumb during your golden years is a goal, the UGA Extension in Fulton County and North Fulton Master Gardeners can help – for free. In September, learn about shade gardening or lawn care for fall and winter. October classes include composting, bulbs and planting trees and shrubs (www.nfmg.net). Appen Media hosts inaugural New Beginnings Expo By KATHLEEN STURGEON
kathleen@appenmediagroup.com
W
hen one thinks of a person entering a new beginning in their life, they may think of getting married, going to college or having a baby. But a somewhat overlooked period in our lives is when we enter the phase of time when we retire, become empty nesters or considering downsizing. That’s why Appen Media Group felt the need to host an event unlike any other for the 55-and-up lifestyles in our community. The expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Metropolitan Club, 5895 Windward Parkway in Alpharetta. Appen’s Manager of Marketing and Innovation Wendy Goddard said the company has been researching for this event for quite some time. “We found that much of our community fit into one of two categories: moving toward a retirement lifestyle or taking care of aging parents, sometimes both at the same time,” Goddard said. “We also found that many are choosing to move their parents here to be closer as they make lifestyle changes, like downsizing or moving into an active adult or assisted living community.” While there are many options for every stage of the 55-and-up lifestyle available in the area, it can sometimes be overwhelming and time-consuming to do all the necessary research to gather those options. Goddard said Appen’s desire is to provide a relaxed, unpressured way where people can gather a large amount of information, get questions answered and options narrowed down to ease this process. “There are a lot of decisions to be made, whether planning for yourself or caring for an aging parent, and sometimes you have to make these decisions quickly,” she said. “This expo will hopefully give attendees a good resource for some of the best services and options available in our thriving community.” It was important to Appen to cover every stage of the 55-and-up lifestyle, so attendees can expect to see everything from cruises and activities to assistedliving and home care options and everything in between. For the soon-to-be or recently retired, there will be vendors offering information on fun lifestyle options, ways to get involved, retirement planning and downsizing options. For those who care for aging parents,

This is even more critical when you or a loved one is dealing with a chronic healthcare condition, a serious medical diagnosis, or a decline in functional capacity. candy@northsidewoman.com he need for legal advice often increases as we age, and planning for retirement, wills, finances, long term care, property and other matters often requires more professional advice than most of us have at our fingertips. And it is a demographic all of us are tracking toward – if we aren’t there already. In Georgia, the population of people 60 and older is growing more rapidly than any another segment of the population, according to the U.S. Administration on Aging. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that one in every five Georgians will be over 60 by the year 2030 -- an increase of almost 34 percent from 2012. And the majority of seniors will be women; many of whom may have left the legal decisions to their husbands or others and now find themselves navigating the world alone. Joanna Hurley always assumed she had the knowledge and experience to deal with end-of-life decisions for seniors. After all, she had worked in the family’s Atlanta law firm, Hurley Elder Care for years, and her husband, Miles, is one of the state’s top elder law attorneys as well as the president of the Elder Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia. But when her own mother was diagnosed 10 years ago with early onset Alzheimer’s, Hurley realized how much she had in common with the clients who walked through the doors of the firm every

Battle the Bulge! By Kiran Sajja, M.D.
Not at your waist line, but on your face! How many times do you look in the mirror and you think…that can’t be me! You envision yourself as energetic and youthful, but your eyes tell a different story. You find the droopy skin of your upper eyelids make you look Kiran Sajja, MD. disinterested or angry. The Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon puffiness and dark circles of your lower eyelids make you look tired and aged.
Did you know that your insurance may cover eyelid surgery?
Gone are the days that you have to grow graceful with age… YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
Eyelid rejuvenation is a common outpatient procedure which combines the use of minimally-invasive facial injectables and surgical techniques. Botox and Dysport can be used to relax the tense muscles of the brow and forehead and diminish prominent crow’s feet. Fillers, such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Sculptra, can be used to correct loss of natural volume that occurs with age restoring a youthful contour to the eyelid and cheek. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can be performed to remove excess skin and fat around the eyes. These procedures can be performed with minimal to no scarring. Upper eyelid surgery in some circumstances may be covered by your medical insurance. At Milan Eye Center, Dr. Kiran Sajja has demonstrated unsurpassed skill in the use of facial injectables and eyelid surgery. He has been designated, by his peers, as one of the “Best Doctors in America”. Dr. Sajja is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in reconstructive and cosmetic oculofacial plastic surgery. This unique background means Dr. Sajja possesses the microsurgical precision of an eye surgeon and the artistry and imagination of a plastic surgeon. ▼WOMEN IN BUSINESS, Continued from Page 18 “My parents were typical ‘Hurley’ clients. They had limited resources, no long-term care insurance and huge needs,” Hurley said. “They spent lots of money on care, utilized public benefits where available and made the best of a bad situation.” Her mother passed away about two years ago at age 74, an event that still angers Hurley to this day. But she came out of the experience with a renewed idea

of the importance of legal planning and support for both the elderly and their caregivers. So what legal steps should seniors be considering as they look to the future? Here is advice from Hurley Elder Care on simple steps to take to get your affairs in order.
Get your legal documents in order
Anyone over the age of 18 should have a General Durable Power of Attorney for Financial Matters (GDPOA), as well as a Georgia Advance Directive for Healthcare in place. “The possibility that you could become unable to handle your own financial matters is rarely at the top of your mind,” Hurley said. “But the possibility of an unexpected accident or diagnosis is real, and being prepared is a pragmatic decision that will save time and money for the people who care about you.” A valid will is one of the most important estate planning tools and provides instructions on how to handle your property when you die. All of these documents should be updated when you have any “life events,” including marriage, divorce, birth of a child, and when you face a health diagnosis that could result in incapacity (such as Alzheimer’s disease). Hurley Elder Care also advises clients to evaluate both their physical and financial health as they get closer to retirement to determine if more extensive legal planning (such as a trust) is appropriate. “After retirement, our firm recommends a ‘checkup’ with an elder law attorney every 10 years, or with a corresponding life event or a material 20 | northsidewoman.com | september2016
change in health or finances,” Hurley said. While there are a number of online tools that can be helpful when you are gathering information and looking at available options, Hurley advised caution when using online forms and documents. “Often, these documents do not [fully] address the powers the family needs to conduct their financial business,” she advised. “And there are often ‘state specific’ rules that may not be [addressed] by [online] documents.”
Plan for the future – realistically
Families often fail to plan for the possibility of incapacity, for a variety of reasons, said Hurley. For many, contemplating the loss of functional and cognitive capacity is difficult, and fear can become a barrier to appropriate legal planning. “Common pushbacks we hear in our elder law practice are things like a fear of losing control, an appearance of favoritism between one child versus another and an unwillingness to accept cognitive decline,” she added. Hurley said many children are surprised to learn that “mom or dad” had no power of attorney; or surviving spouses believe that being married automatically means a power of attorney is in place. “There are always options available regardless of the circumstances,” Hurley said. “But as with most things, the longer you wait the fewer options you have and the more expensive it becomes to solve your problem.
Financial resources are often tied to legal options
Planning for your financial future means more flexibility when you arrive. “The more resources you have, the more options you have in the elder law world,” said Hurley. Having advice from an elder law attorney can help families maximize resources to find and pay for quality longterm care. Establishing a revocable trust can be costly on the front end but can protect your assets from a tax perspective, estate recovery and even probate, she added.
Help is available for those with limited resources
Hurley said there is help for lowincome seniors, but she admits the population of elderly is growing faster than government services can keep up with. The Georgia Senior Legal Hotline (404-657-9915) is staffed by attorneys who offer free legal advice and information to seniors. For anyone who suspects abuse, neglect or exploitation of and adult living in a private home is urged to call adult protective services at 404-657-5250. Peggie Morrow helps community in multitude of ways By KATHLEEN STURGEON
kathleen@appenmediagroup.com
P
eggie Morrow and her husband Jim rarely say “no” to a non-profit in need of support. That’s part of the reason the Cumming resident is involved in the community in a variety of ways. Just a few of her involvements include cofounding the Morrow Community Fund; serving as executive director of the Forsyth BYOT Benefit; serving on the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce’s Business Advancement Resource Advisory Council; participating on the fund raising committee for Mentor Me and serving on the University of North Georgia’s College of Health and Science’s advisory council. Plus, she organizes and oversees three fund raising events a year. “I don’t volunteer to have something on my resume or to feel important,” Morrow said. “I volunteer because I was taught giving back is what you do. When you have been given as much as I have, as in a great family, security and love as a child, a healthy body and brain, you serve others whenever you can. If we hear of a need, we try to help.” But before she was this involved in the community, Morrow taught middle school students, often encouraging them to visualize a dream and begin laying the foundation in order to live it as an adult. One day, she realized she wasn’t doing this in her own life and decided to retire from teaching. She moved to the Caribbean and started a babysitting service for tourists. After fulfilling this passion, she moved back to her hometown of Greenville, S.C. and eventually reconnected with Jim, whom she knew from high school. The couple later married and she moved to Cumming. Since then, she took over the marketing aspect of her husband’s practice of Morrow Family Medicine in Cumming and helped the business triple the employees and revenue, add a second location in Milton and win numerous awards. One day she discussed with Jim what they could do for the community in Forsyth County. Peggie had been active in South Carolina and wanted to get involved in her new town. She soon heard about the Forsyth County Schools’ Bring Your Own Technology initiative and knew she had to do something. “I learned that some 2,000 students didn’t have devices or internet at home,” Morrow said. “If you and I are the only ones in a classroom without

internet at home, we are at a terrible disadvantage. Since I was a former middle school teacher and Jim is a self-described geek, we decided that would be our cause.” So the two decided to do something together and put on a golf tournament that raised $35,000. From there, she joined and helped out in various organizations and non-profits. She strives to give back as much as she can but sometimes has to turn down a request. “I have had to say ‘no’ a couple of times recently when asked to join a board or head up a committee as I am stretched pretty thin right now,” Morrow said. “I give my very best in time and energy when I commit to an organization, so if I can’t, I have to say ‘no.’ I am not one to be on 10 different boards or committees and pretend I can make a difference to each of them.” For those interested in giving back, Morrow said to figure out what you feel passionate about, whether children, animals, abused women, veterans or any other cause. She also suggests joining a leadership community such as Leadership Forsyth that Morrow joined or Leadership North Fulton that she has applied for. As for the Morrows, she said they plan on giving back and helping as long as they can. “As long as Jim and I are physically and financially able, we will continue,” Morrow said. “It’s just part of who our parents were, and in turn, who we are.” ■

Multiple Sclerosis Cumming woman has personal goal in finding the cure The Blazing Saddles team at start line for the 2015 Bike MS Cox Atlanta Peach Ride.
By CANDY WAYLOCK
O
n Saturday, Oct. 1, more than 1,000 bicyclists will put on their helmets and set out on a bike ride across Georgia that will last all weekend and raise more than $2 million to help find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. Among the many riders will be Jean DeRosa, 63, of Cumming, who is participating in her third Bike MS event in Georgia. For Jean, the event in Georgia is personal. In 2011, her son, Spencer Jordan, was diagnosed with MS at age 37. “You feel really helpless,” said DeRosa, recalling her first reaction to the news of her son’s illness. “I knew nothing about MS, but I knew I wanted to do something.” MS is a progressive disease which damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing numbness, impairment of speech and of muscular coordination, blurred vision and severe fatigue. First symptoms generally occur between the ages of 20 and 40. It was during a dinner with friends a few years later that the discussion turned to Bike MS and the opportunities available for DeRosa to get involved. Soon after, Jean and her husband, Thornton, were members of the Blazing Saddles bike team and participated in their first Bike MS event in 2014. DeRosa has long enjoyed recreational biking with her husband and estimates she rides about 20 miles a week along the Greenway in Forsyth County and the Silver Comet Trail. Her love of biking and her desire to help find a cure for MS is the perfect combination. “It’s been meaningful and rewarding, especially since it has a connection with my son,” said DeRosa, who has two children and four grandchildren. She is most proud of her status as one of the top fundraisers for the Bike MS Georgia event, affording her the opportunity to wear a distinct jersey during the weekend to signify her efforts. The $2 million raised in Georgia in October will be added to the $85 million raised in the 100 bikes rides across the country this year. The funds are dedicated to finding a cure for a disease that affects more than two million people worldwide. Almost 80 cents of every dollar raised for MS goes directly to research and local programs, said Roy A. Rangel, president of the National MS Society Georgia Chapter. The state chapter serves more than 9,000 people living with MS through direct financial assistance, respite care, MS clinics, self-help

groups and peer counseling, community information and referrals, education, chapter publications and recreational and social programs. Rangel said the Bike MS-Cox Atlanta Peach Ride is quickly becoming the premier cycling ride in the Southeast and will mark its 30th anniversary this year. The first ride in 1986 attracted about 200 cyclists and has grown steadily each year since. “The routes have changed three times,” he noted. “For the past 10 years we were at Callaway Gardens Prior to that, we rode from Conyers Olympic Horse Park to Rock Eagle. This year we are excited to be offering both a one and two-day option, starting at Blalock Lakes and riding to LaGrange.”
There are varying intensities to the rides, from the 100-mile trek for avid cyclists, to the more moderate 60and 35-mile run for the novice or recreational participants. The DeRosas will be among the recreational riders. “Honestly, I’m 63, so we do the 35-mile ride over the weekend and have a lot of fun and a wonderful dinner on Saturday night!” laughs Jean, noting her husband recently had surgery and is more cautious on two wheels. She says the event thrives on the dedication of volunteers who set up and man the routes, providing assistance, encouragement and a helping hand (or lift) for bikers. “I’m a little slow and get passed quite often, but so far I haven’t needed the ‘sag wagon’ yet,” laughs DeRosa, referring to the vehicle that rescues stranded bikers. Five years after the initial diagnosis, Spencer is doing well and living a relatively normal life with medication and other therapies. He lives in Cumming and works as a high school drama teacher in Cobb County. “Twenty years ago there was very little that could be done for MS,” said DeRosa. “But the research has come such a long way, and in the past five years so many different treatment options have become available.” She is proud of her small part in helping find the cure for MS, and she is appreciative that riding a bike is something she can do well into her senior years. “You can do this forever,” said DeRosa, who works part time in her daughter-in-law’s dentistry practice in Cumming. “It’s much easier on your joints than [other sports], and it’s a fun activity I can do with my husband, regardless of my age.” To find out more about the Bike MS-Cox Atlanta Peach Ride on Oct. 1-2, visit www.bikemsgeorgia.org. Here you can register to ride, or volunteer at the event. ■

Locally-owned coffee shops draw devoted customer base By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
T
he relative ease in taking Mugs on Milton in Alpharetta from idea to opening day still surprises the two owners to this day. “We came up with the idea and laid out the details in the fall of 2013, and we were open in January,” laughs Jennifer Newton, who opened Mugs with business partner Gretchen Smith. “I know...it’s crazy but it worked.” A year later, the same “crazy” ideas led to a spinoff in Crabapple, Mugs on Milton, which duplicated the success of the original location. Customers were quickly drawn to the ever-changing menu of breakfast items (although the staples of muffins, scones and cookies are always available), free trade coffee roasted and brewed on site, and a newly-expanded lunch menu. Don’t see it on the menu? Newton said give them a few day’s notice and they just may be able to fill special requests. Before opening Mugs on Milton, Newton and Smith were both working in downtown Alpharetta – Smith at the iconic Sis and Moon’s boutique and Newton at a marketing firm – when the idea to open a coffee shop started getting tossed around. “People kept saying there needed to be a coffee shop downtown, and we decided we were the ones to do it,” said Newton, who lives with her husband and two dogs in Milton. Neither had ever worked in food service in the “bricks and mortar” sense, although Gretchen did have a long background in baking. They quickly found a small space on Milton Avenue in the heart of downtown Alpharetta, taking over the 700 square feet of space that previously held a consignment shop. Within a few months of opening, Mugs on Milton had expanded to the entire building. “It was kind of surprising,” said Newton of the quick success. “We expected low and steady growth...but that was not at all what happened.” She said for the first four months it was just her and Smith running the coffee shop. “We were working about 15 hours a day, seven days a week in those first few months,” said Newton. “We started hiring others to help because we were growing so fast.” She and Smith, who also lives in Milton, both strive for efficiency — foregoing complicated recipes to the ones which require the fewest ingredients, and which could be made in an oven. At Mugs, you
24 | northsidewoman.com | september2016
will not find a deep fryer or cooktop. Everything is made on site with the exception of a few items to meet special dietary needs for vegans or gluten-free. “We figured out pretty early what made sense and what was possible to do with the most efficiency,” said Newton, who has lived in North Fulton since 2004. “Gretchen’s experience in Business partners Gretchen Smith and Jennifer baking was invaluable in Newton. [that process].” It also helps that the two women are of the same mind when it comes to decision making, and rarely, if ever, disagree. “It helps that we are always on the same page and have very similar ideas,” said Newton. “We both have ‘can do’ attitudes and there isn’t much that holds us back.” That positive attitude is the primary reason the second location in Crabapple is open today. “The only explanation is we are crazy,” laughed Newton, who said they never planned to open a second site. The two were approached by someone interested in a franchise, and had gone through the process of scouting a location and taken the basic steps to open. But the prospective owner backed out, and Newton and Smith were left with the perfect location. “It was just one of those things...everything was moving so smoothly so we just kept going,” said Newton. “[But] if there were any roadblocks there probably would not have been a second location.” She credits her staff, which is now at 14, in much of the success of Mugs. Newton said they are very deliberate in their hiring, then create an environment where their employees are supported. “We have a fantastic team that needs very little direction from us to do their jobs well,” said Newton. “We want people to be happy here and want to come to work.” Looking forward, Newton said they are always listening to customers and always tweaking the menu to serve their customers best. But as far as a third location of Mugs? “That would be a hard ‘no’,” laughs Newton. “We are very happy where we are.” ■

“Seasoned” Fashion Designers f
Giorgio Armani

eing passionate about fashion is not just for the young. Those who have spent their lives honing their skill and sharing it with the world create true fashion. See the list below of ‘seasoned’ fashion designers who are still setting the standard in the fashion world. They are true examples of expanding their creativity beyond clothing to art, writing, interior design and philanthropic endeavors.
Giorgio Armani 82, started his world-renowned career in fashion in his native Italy. He freelanced for many design houses creating menswear. In 1975, he presented his first collection of men and women’s ready-to-wear line under his own name. His creative talents have been used to design clothing for Lady Gaga’s stage costumes, Olympians, interiors for his own line of hotels and resorts. Armani has a retail network of 60 Giorgio Armani boutiques, 11 Collezioni, 122 Emporio Armani, 94 A/X Armani exchange, 1 Giorgio Armani Accessori and 13 Armani Junior stores spread over 37 different countries. Manolo Blahnik 73, the famous shoe-designer hales from Spain and learned to make shoes by watching his mother. He never went to shoe design school but watched pattern cutters and technicians in shoe factories. He brought back the stiletto heel during the 1970s when chunkier designs were popular. It has since become a classic. He still designs every shoe himself. His brand is a part of pop culture, mentioned in songs and television shows such as Sex in the City. Blahnik states, “Men tell me that I’ve saved their marriages. It costs them a fortune in shoes, but it’s cheaper than a divorce. So I’m still useful, you see.” Add a pair of Campari pumps or Chaos sandals to your Christmas gift list this year. Oh the luxury! Diane von Furstenberg 69, Belgium-born and a

princess by marriage, von Furstenberg worked in Paris as a fashion photographer’s assistant. Later she worked in Italy as an apprentice for a textile manufacturer. In this factory she learned about cut, color and fabric. It was there she designed her first silky jersey dress. In 1974 she introduced her knit-jersey wrap dress in New York. The design became such a success in women’s fashion, it is in the collection of Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Due to the phenomenal success of the dress design, she was featured on the cover of Newsweek in 1976. She relaunched her well-fitting design in 1997 to a new generation. I always recommend a classic figure flattering jersey wrap dress for my clients who travel for business or who are transitioning between sizes. Her brand holds its value and can be found in consignment stores for budget savvy shoppers.
for her Essentials line of related clothing pieces that mixed and matched. In 1988, she created DKNY for the younger generation and has seen incredible success in men and women’s clothing around the world.
Calvin Klein 74, is an American who designed a line of tight fitting jeans in 1974 that launched him into the mainstream. His eponymous line has expanded to men and women’s wear, fragrances, cosmetics and home collections. Klein’s clean lines still outfit many businesswomen with easy-care classics at an affordable price. Ralph Lauren 76, made his mark in men’s fashion by designing neckties and selling them in New York. In 1972 he unveiled his first Ralph Lauren collection of women’s clothing and also his iconic short–sleeved polo shirts. The first line was available in 24 colors. Either you own one or someone from your past does. Lauren says, “I have always been inspired by the dream of America — families in the country, weathered trucks and farmhouses; sailing off the coast of Maine; following dirt roads in an old wood-paneled station wagon; a convertible filled with young college kids sporting crew cuts and sweatshirts and frayed sneakers.” Generations of families and Olympians are still wearing his classic Americana style. Gloria Vanderbilt 92, was born a Vanderbilt and is the mother of Anderson Cooper. Beyond famous family genes, her signature jeans with embroidered swan logo on the back pocket revealed in 1976 became a fashion staple for many women. She launched a line of women’s clothing, housewares, shoes and accessories. She is an artist and a writer who regularly contributes to New York Times, Vanity Fair and Elle magazine. Vera Wang 67, is a New Yorker of Chinese descent. She worked for Vogue magazine and Ralph Lauren before becoming an independent wedding dress designer. Both Democrats and Republicans appreciate her designs. She has designed dresses for Chelsea Clinton and Ivanka Trump! Recently, she has made some of her designs more affordable for the masses by creating a line of wedding dresses for David’s Bridal. These designers are wonderful examples of people who have stayed current in an ever-evolving industry by remaining passionate about fashion and honing their creative talents in a variety of ways and sharing it with the world. “There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.” Sophia Loren. ■
Carolina Herrer a 77, a Venezuelan designer who began her career in New York, has been dressing celebrities for decades. First ladies, from Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama, have worn her classic and feminine designs. She celebrates the female figure by adding luscious fabrics, unique trim details and fluid hemlines to her evening wear designs. Every season she includes a crisp white blouse in her newest line.
Tommy Hilfiger
Tommy Hilfiger 65, is an American designer who founded his lifestyle brand in 1985. His preppy clothing line for menswear has been extremely popular in the past few decades, and his empire and popularity continues to grow with the addition of a women’s line, fragrances and lifestyle books. Hilfiger states, “If I see someone wearing Hilfiger it makes me proud, but then I wonder what I could do to make the style more relevant for them next year?” Keep it coming, Tommy! Donna Karan 67, started with Anne Klein label after design school in the 1960s. She became head designer after the death of Klein in 1974. In 1984, she left Klein and started her own line of “modern clothes for modern people.” Karan became well known

s the weather is starting to cool off, many seniors are ready to get out of the house and do something that brings purpose to their day. If you live in the North Fulton area, you do not have to look far. North Fulton is home to four senior centers that provide a great hot lunch and an engaging place to meet other seniors with similar interests. Whether it is a friendly game of bingo, a painting class, an exercise session or brushing up on computer skills, the senior centers of Senior Services North Fulton are a great place to spend the day. We also offer outings to grocery stores, and we take field trips to area attractions. Our purpose is to enrich the lives of our seniors and keep them socially engaged, healthy, and happy.
We live in a day and age where many seniors are living with their adult children, but are home alone while their kids are working and their grandkids are at school. We also have a lot of seniors in North Fulton that live completely alone and are in danger of social isolation. Having a nice place to meet with others, share a meal and try out a new activity is such a nice amenity to have in our area. Many other counties don’t have these types of community centers readily available. North Fulton is so lucky – we have four. If you are interested in finding out more about what the senior center nearest you has to offer, give us a call. Typically, our centers are open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.–4 p.m., and there is no mandatory fee to participate. Our team cannot wait to tour you around and show off all the great things our seniors do to fill their day with purposeful and fun activities.

In addition to our four senior centers, Senior Services North Fulton provides many other free or low cost conveniences to older adults: • Meals on Wheels, • Meals on Wheels for Pets, • Free transportation to medical appointments, • Voucher transportation anywhere in the greater Atlanta area, • Care management and in-home services. Senior Services North Fulton is a nonprofit organization. When you are looking to give back to your community, please keep Senior Services North Fulton in mind. Your generous donation will help keep our services free or low cost for our participants. To donate, or get more information on our programs, call 770-993-1906. ■

Senior pets & owners
go great together
By DONNA G. ADAMS, D.V.M. Ivy Hill Animal Hospital
W
hen an older pet is looking for a new home, it often can be a difficult process to find the right place for the pet to spend their elderly years. But a senior pet can be a great addition to a home with senior owners. There are many advantages in adopting an older pet instead of a puppy or kitten. You already know the size and personality of a senior pet, you don’t have to go through house training with puppies or deal with those sharp little teeth, and you don’t have to go through the stage where kittens climb the drapes and use those sharp baby claws on your arms. However, as with all new additions to our homes, there are some things to consider when adopting a senior
pet. We still have to consider the pet’s activity needs. A border collie at nine years of age still needs a great deal of exercise – while other breeds may be slowing down to just a walk or two during the day. Make sure you can take care of the grooming needs of a pet. A poodle or a Persian cat have long hair and need regular grooming. Small pets eat less so their food bills are less, but make sure you factor in ongoing veterinary care as they age. There are other considerations that seniors need to be cautious of when bringing a pet into the house. Make sure you have a pet with a pleasant attitude. Our skin becomes thinner as we age, and small scratches or even bites can do more damage to our skin. Cat bites can cause bad infections. Nail caps can be a good option to cover a cat’s sharp nails. If you have a lowered immune system because of health considerations, make sure owning a pet does not
create added problems. Don’t allow your pet to lick your face or any areas with open wounds, and make sure you keep your pet on good flea, tick and heartworm control from your veterinarian. One very important part of owning a pet as you age is to have a plan in place for who will take care of your pet if you cannot do so. With the proper thought and planning, a senior pet can be a wonderful addition to a senior person’s household. Seniors often have more time to spend with a pet, and a pet can provide essential company and encourage us to move about to take care of them. What a great partnership this can make! Donna G. candy@northsidewoman.com Northside Man: Roger Wise, Jr. City of Residence: Roswell Hometown: Goldsboro, N.C. College and Career: East Carolina College; US Army Medical Corps; 30-year career with the Ross Pediatric division of Abbot Laboratories Family: Married to wife, Claire, for 45 years; three grown children and five grandchildren
R
oger Wise Jr, has spent his days in retirement likely as busy – or busier – than his days spent in corporate America. A respected civic leader, he is involved in governmental affairs, serves as a national ambassador for Shriners Hospitals and, as a U.S. Army veteran, a strong supporter of the Junior ROTC. Closest to his heart are issues involving veteran’s affairs, education and healthcare for children. Wise is a well-known figure at the State Capitol, as well as city halls across North Fulton. A long-time member of the Roswell Rotary Club, he recently was presented the Builder’s Award from the club for his efforts to rejuvenate the Rotary Club of Johns Creek/North Fulton. Four years ago, the club was down to seven members; today the club has met the 25-member goal and is once again vibrant in the community.
How did you choose North Fulton as your home?
We’ve lived in Florida and South Georgia, but Claire and I have lived in Roswell for 35 years. We’ve raised our family here, and we feel blessed that our “small town” is the Horseshoe Country Club Subdivision. In North Fulton, we are family.
You must have seen a lot of changes in North Fulton over the years. All positive? North Fulton is very unique in that it has changed considerably over the years, but it has also stayed the same
in many ways. There are a lot of new residents in the area, but you still get that small-town feel -- everybody cares about everyone else. We have more restaurants, Roger Wise Jr., back row on left, with family. more shopping, more entertainment, and, unfortunately, more traffic. The traffic problems are the biggest downside of the growth, and the biggest challenge we face today in North Fulton. But because of the cooperation between our city governments, I believe we are moving forward in improving the traffic situation.
You’ve had many honors bestowed upon you over the years. What was most special? I have been truly blessed. I have had many honors that are very special to me, but the one that is the closest to my heart was the “Roger Wise Jr. Day in Georgia” on March 13, 2014. That day, the governor, lieutenant governor, Georgia House and Senate, and the secretary of state all paid special recognition to my contributions to the state. I have been involved in the legislative process for 40 years, advocating for healthcare for children, education and veterans. I pride myself in knowing what’s going on under the dome – but that day they all pulled one over on me! As I stood at the podium in the Senate chamber, I saw my family and friends – I started crying. The lieutenant governor stepped back and said “We want to hear from our honoree,” I didn’t know what to say. But then I remembered, my grandmother many years ago said, “Sonny (my nickname) you will only be as successful as your friends allow you to be.“ After repeating that, I looked at all in attendance and said, “Thank you, my friends, for being so kind to me and my family,” and stepped back.
So isn’t retirement a time for slowing down? I am blessed that I am able to [stay as active] in retirement life that I was in corporate life. I am paying my civic rent,
Roger Wise, center, is presented the Club Builder Award by Rotary District 6900 Governor Bob Hagan, left, as fellow Rotarian John Albers looks on.
and when I see good things and good deeds happen, I get a real feeling of accomplishment. I called that my “psychic income” and it’s worth more than money. So I challenge all to pay their civic rent and get paid back in psychic income. ■

enior pets have a lot of love to give, and 10-year old Cong is no exception. This sweet Pekingese would love nothing more than to spend his senior years sleeping in the sunlight, playing with his squeaky toys and going for occasional car rides with his owner. Although Cong is currently in a foster home with larger dogs, he would prefer to be an only dog, or be with someone his own size. A kid-free home is preferable, especially because of Cong’s small size. Cong is house trained and current on all vaccinations. Interiors
orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on the staples and fads.
Don't wait for your empty nest....
W
hen observing the active lives many of my clients have in juggling work and family I often suggest creating a parents retreat within their homes. Most parents put their children's needs and comforts first which is laudable, whether it be shuttling them to and from school or cheering them on through their extracurricular activities little time is left to recharge, reflect not to mention finding a space to simply be still in. Identifying this area within your household need not be as challenging as one may imagine. In touring clients homes I often see staged spaces that are not used by the family, a small room right off the foyer or a guest room seldom hosting visitors, that storage room on the terrace level can be easily purged of its contents, or the abandoned screen porch all making the ideal location for your private retreat. Once you have selected the space, be a little selfish in choosing furnishing and accents that you find calming. A warm
natural color pallet along with selecting comfortable textures will afford you the luxury of clearing your mind. Be a little selfish in creating this off limit space, surround yourself with only things that bring you comfort. The perfect chair, chase or sofa that allows you to collapse into it free from guilt with a favorite book is a must. Lighting that can be dimmed along with sound element that can be volume controlled will be sure to envelope your state of decompression. When you have the opportunity to enjoy a view of your outdoor landscape it will add to the tranquility of your space. A soothing water feature is a nice touch which can be accomplished with a cascading wall fountain or dish garden. A posh rug that's feels great under your bare feet can be a welcoming feature for everyone to enjoy. In closing, know that taking care of you allows you to better facilitate the needs of your family, so go ahead and build your "empty nest" before the fledglings fly! ■

The Georgian Lakeside T
he Georgian Lakeside has promised to give each resident an Assisted Living and Memory Care experience like you have never seen before. What a statement to deliver and you may ask the simple question, “how?” It begins with the brainchild of the building that offers amenities never seen before. Such is our Endless Pathway in Memory Care where residents that walk can have an environment that allows the desire to do so under safe conditions and never leaving the Memory care arena. Yet, it does not stop there. In addition to such opportunities, our Assisted Living residents have a Fitness Gym and even an Arts and Crafts room to divulge their creative lifestyles. And of course our Nursing, Housekeeping and Care Specialists as well as other departments will all have a hand in building connections with each resident to help them to flourish in their senior years forward. Again, however, we move progressively forward with the announcement that here at the Georgian Lakeside, we are proud to announce that our Dining Services Manager, Tammi Moore has a long history of success in the Culinary Arts. Tammi has been in the Food and Beverage Industry over 33 plus years. This rich history has taken her to heights

that has placed her in great demand in the Senior Living area. She has commanded kitchens where she fed the five thousand literally, provided catering services to former governors in Atlanta, Metro Atlanta mega churches and Emory University. In speaking with Tammi, this is what she conveys, “I want our residents to be in excited anticipation of what will be presented. That is the foremost goal that I and my staff will have: to satisfy and create a sense of trust that we will do our very best to make this Assisted Living like you’ve never seen before”! ■

great smile is always in style! Improving your smile is possible at any age, reflecting an inner attitude of joyful living, no matter the miles traveled. Today, with the addition of Invisalign products, orthodontists offer many ways to achieve straight teeth with minimal interference to how you live. A custom series of aligners are created for you that are smooth, comfortable, and virtually invisible, are worn over the teeth. After shifting the teeth into place, a new set of aligners are exchanged every two weeks. Because the trays can be removed, you can eat whatever you JORDAN want at meals! The training an orthodontist receives, focusing on correction of bad bites, proper occlusion, and straightening teeth, qualifies him or her to plan a comprehensive treatment for the patient. At Jordan orthodontics, we treat patients from youth to adults, including mature adults. This is not just a practice statement, but a reality. Mrs. Peggy Jordan, eighty-three years young, is currently a patient of Dr. Jordan, enjoying the benefits of the Invisalign product. Currently working to give his mother the smile she desires, Dr. Jordan is using the training and expertise of twenty-eight years in practice to achieve excellent results. We welcome patients of all ages to experience loving their smile! ■

Tips for the fight against aging
I
am constantly asked "when should I stop coloring my hair and just go natural?" That is a tricky question because as a colorist I want to say "NEVER!" But as a member of the grey hair club I understand the pain of grey hair maintenance. It is especially difficult for those with a high percentage of grey hair. I suggest making the grey hair work for you instead of fighting the grey. This means using more translucent color coverage instead of color that is too opaque. For brunettes this means possibly going lighter and implementing more dimension by adding highlights or mid-lights. More color in your hair helps to eliminate hard lines and looks more expensive. For blondes the grey issue is slightly easier but the trick is finding the right tone. Too blonde can be just as aging. For example, light hair, light brows, light skin and light eyes can make you look washed out. Consider adding depth with mid-lights or lowlights and even slightly darker at your base with lighter ends. If you are seriously considering going all grey -more power to you! Definitely go for an updated haircut and style. Don't be afraid of a chic Bob or a trendy short asymmetric cut. Keep the fight alive. ■ Aria Salon has won Best of the Best 2012, 2104 and 2015 - Appen Media Group

As the Seasons Change... So does our skin
R
aven Elosiebo-Walker, MD Board Certified Dermatologist at Aesthetic Specialty Center in Roswell explains the challenges our skin can face as the seasons change. As summer winds down, it is a good time to focus on you and your skin. After you’ve enjoyed that summer sunshine, you definitely want to make sure that you are up to date on your yearly skin exam by your dermatologist. It’s a good idea to have moles checked, especially if you or any member of your family has had a history of skin cancer. Hopefully you’ve been consistent with using your sunscreen. A quick but thorough skin exam by your dermatologist can give you great piece of mind as you look forward to the fall and winter seasons. Skin cancer is not the only thing you should be thinking about as the cooler months approach. Other common skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema tend to worsen or flare in the cooler months. Though psoriasis and eczema are two VERY different conditions, they share a few similarities. Each are chronic or longstanding conditions characterized by recurrent itchy skin rashes. They also both tend to worsen in colder weather, due to lack of the immune suppressive effects of sun exposure (in the case of psoriasis), and due to the drier air (in the case of eczema). Making sure the skin stays well moisturized with a good creambased moisturizer everyday can significantly help with itching. Scratching the skin tends to make things worse with both conditions, so keeping itch
to a minimum is very important. Avoiding scented moisturizers and fragrances in other skin care products is very important in the management of eczema. Even with proper at home care, these skin conditions can still flare and cause rashes on the skin. Another common condition, rosacea can be recognized by minimal to moderate visible blood vessels predominately on the face and chest – when left untreated can spread to the ears, scalp, even the eye area, and may present with or without acne like flare ups and can worsen without proper maintenance. Although rosacea cannot be cured it can be maintained. Studies by the National Rosacea Society show that it affects over 16,000 million Americans. Regular visits to your dermatologist to develop a management program that works for you may include possible topical medications along with in office treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or Broad Band Light Therapy (BBL) to treat and minimize visible “ FLUSHING “ and unsightly blood vessels. Your dermatologist will also cover “TRIGGERS“ that can stimulate the skin resulting in flare ups and how to avoid. The use of skin care products developed for patients with compromised and or sensitive skin can assist in keeping conditions under control. Make sure to schedule a visit with your dermatologist to receive the appropriate medical therapy for each of these conditions so that you’re able to enjoy your upcoming fall and holiday seasons. ■ Raven Elosiebo-Walker, MD, Dermatologist Aesthetic Specialty Center 770-393-9000

Quit the Sit
SPONSORED SECTION
You’re always there for them, so let us be there for you.
By SUE MCCORMICK SYNERGY HOMECARE
Take the pledge
Make no ifs, ands, or butts about it (pun intended), sitting is bad for your health! A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that sitting more than six hours in a day will greatly increase your McCORMICK risk of an early death. In fact, the research suggests inactivity now kills more people than smoking. As a result, SYNERGY HomeCare has launched “Quit the Sit”, a campaign to encourage people to move their bodies more, improve their health, and hopefully lengthen their lifespan. We’ve created pledge cards to help people stick to their goals. Pledge cards can be downloaded from our latest blog on the SYNERGY Homecare website at www. SynergyHomeCare.com For those who haven’t been active in a while, it’s best to take it slow to start. Talk to your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program.
Ways to Quit the Sit
Looking for ideas on how to Quit the Sit? Just put one foot in front of the other. By simply walking, seniors can improve their health and lengthen their lifespan. The National Institute on Aging suggests that walking can do wonders for seniors. Walking for as little as 30 minutes a day will improve circulation, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, alleviate
arthritis symptoms, decrease anxiety and depression, and promote weight loss. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that older Americans engage in moderate to mild aerobic exercise for at least 2.5 hours per week. Don’t overdo it in the beginning. The secret to a successful walking program is making a plan and sticking to it. The benefits of walking come over time. Tailor your time and energy output to an appropriate level for your age and health status. If you have balance issues, you may want to use a walking stick to help stabilize your steps, or engage a SYNERGY HomeCare caregiver to help support your fitness goals. An American Heart Association study revealed that American adults are 76% more likely to take a walk if another person is counting on them, so grab a partner and get going! Sue McCormick and Stacy Fotos are the owners of Synergy HomeCare North Atlanta and provide non-medical homecare to the seniors in the North Metro Atlanta area. Their caregivers assist people of all ages with any activity of daily living and their goal is to keep your loved ones safe and in their home for as long as possible. Call today for a free home assessment at 770-777-4781 or visit their website for more information. ■
