Belso brings modern living to the suburbs By KATHLEEN STURGEON

n the heart of downtown Alpharetta, home furnishings store Belso is striving to keep up with the booming construction around it while helping customers bring a unique feel to their homes. Co-owners Kelly Klafter and Julia Garrahan opened Belso Home Studio, 30 N. Main St., in January after working together in another home furnishings store. When the Main Street location became available, they jumped at the chance to open their own shop. “We felt there was a need for something fresh in the Atlanta suburbs,” Klafter said. “A lot of retailers offer just one look or one that is similar to everyone else, which tends to take the personality out of the home. Belso strives to do something different, classic with a modern edge or twist. We want to offer something you can’t find anywhere else.” Belso remains true to that by offering a custom private label upholstery line handcrafted by artisans in North Carolina, hand-chosen fabrics from mills around the United States and the world, as well as a wide array of lighting and home accessories. In the store, the owners’ favorite

merchandise is the collection of fabrics, and it’s what most people notice first when they walk inside. Klafter and Garrahan said they are committed to locally made and handcrafted CO-OWNER, KELLY KLAFTER products, from tables made in Georgia to hand-poured candles. They believe each home should be filled with the stories of the furnishings found inside. “You can’t really get this anywhere else,” Klafter said. “If people are looking for something that not everyone has, this would be their source.” Their customers range from homeowners looking to buy a new sofa off the floor to families seeking Belso’s design services to makeover the entire house, Garrahan said. “We can really do anything for the interior,” she said. “There is so much growth around downtown Alpharetta so, our opening has been perfectly timed. There are so many people moving here who have a variety of different needs, whether they are downsizing or moving here from a different city. We have a way of mixing a modern feel with classic tastes to help them make their home their own.” The two often find the items that set their store apart at trade shows, where they can select products from more than 100 vendors from throughout the world. “We pick a few things here and there that we love, and bring it all together,” Garrahan said. “We like to think outside of the box when sourcing product for the store,” Klafter said. “While it’s great having a resource like AmericaMart in our backyard, we also like go to other cities all over in search of things that people don’t necessarily see around Atlanta. We try and find lines that aren’t even in the market yet. It gives people something they haven’t seen before.” Those unique looks appeal to customers, Klafter said. “They like knowing they have the customization options, so they can have something truly how they want to see it,” she said. “Then, it’s not like everybody else’s houses that look exactly the same.” Because the two owners have similar styles, it is easier to create a cohesive brand. “We complement each other’s aesthetics,” Klafter said. “You can see in the store how symbiotic and peaceful it looks. Everything goes together. There are times when we want to reset the floor, and what makes the store so great, is that just because we have a sofa with two particular chairs, we can mix it up and pair it with a totally different chair — [and] it still works.” It seems the community is taking note of the newcomers’ style. In the eight months since they opened, Belso already has hundreds of clients and the city of Alpharetta has asked the Belso team to design the model apartment for its City Center, which is still being built. “It’s really about listening to what our clients want and need, “Klafter said. “We are true to our look and our brand and we are fortunate that people are responding in such a positive way.” To find out more about Belso, visit belso-home.com. ■

estled in charming Staunton, Virginia, the newly opened Blackburn Inn is a luxury boutique hotel that sits on 80 acres in the heart of town. Constructed in 1828 and renovated a few years later by Thomas Jefferson protege Thomas Blackburn, the wide, red brick building with its stately columns and cupola was once part of the Western State Hospital. The hospital housed mental patients until the 1970s and sought in its early years to provide moral treatment in an environment conducive to wellness, according to reports. The inn’s amazing renovation of this historic building exudes a distinctive and unmistakably American look – with red brick, whitewashed wood trim, classical moldings and dramatic light-filled 10 | northsidewoman.com | september2018
hallways. The magnificently renovated grounds and the inn’s impressive architectural details, don’t end in the hotel lobby. The guests room are filled with architectural charm and beautiful large windows, with beautifully designed bathrooms featuring deluxe amenities. The Blackburn has 49 guest rooms and features contemporary design details that complement its historic surroundings. The main entrance takes guests up to the property’s large wraparound front porch, which hosts a café bistro called Second Draft. The cafe serves light bites, regional craft beers and wine. The Blackburn Inn, offers live music on Friday nights and a wine and cheese tasting on Saturdays for hotel guests. They also provide guests fresh pastries from a local bakery every morning. Staunton is located in the heart of Virginia’s spectacular Shenandoah Valley, just below the Blue Ridge Mountains. With amazing views and boutique wineries, it’s the perfect spot to escape the hustle of life. One of my favorite wineries nearby is Barren Ridge Vineyards. A short drive from the inn, visitors to Barren Ridge can relax on a beautiful outdoor patio or sample the local vintage in a spacious tasting room with a large fireplace. The Inn also offers a special Vineyard Tour package, that includes 2 tasting tickets to Barren Ridge. If a trip to the Shenandoah Valley sounds like the perfect fall getaway, book a room with the Blackburn Inn and call and ask about their “Our First Fall” Promotion, for Travel Dates Sep 01 through Nov 30. ■

umpkin season is right around the corner. Is your wardrobe ready to help you look your personal best when the leaves start to change? Here are some tips to look fashionably avant-garde this fall, whether you are in the boardroom or outside kicking through the colorful leaves.
JOIN OUR TEAM
Head-to-toe animal print – meow!
You’re a people person. You’re persuasive.
Fall is a great time to break out your animal prints. This year, many designers are unapologetically mixing animal prints like snakeskin, tiger and cheetah. To follow this trend without being mistaken for a cast member of “Cats,” don a cheetah print trench coat. Or choose one animal print item for your ensemble, such as a cheetah print blouse or slides. A snake print clutch makes a great statement this fall.
Foil everywhere! Do you dare?
The runways focused on head-to-toe foil outerwear, but you can be on-trend this fall by adding just a wisp of foil. Don’t worry, though, we’re not talking aluminum foil. This fall’s fashion foil is a shiny iridescent treatment. Foil accessories such as backpacks, totes, wristlets and sneakers can be found in discount stores as well as high-end designers. If you are still not sure about this trend, metallic shoes and handbags in pewter, brushed gold or bronze are a safe bet.
Think magenta.
This is an attention-getting color that won’t make you blush. This season, magenta’s delicious purplish-pink tone is seen in formalwear, outerwear, business wear and beyond. If you are a keynote speaker, find a sleek jacket in this tone for your fall and winter engagements. For the timid types, add a pencil skirt, cropped flair leg trouser or a nice crewneck sweater in magenta.
Salute the military-style jacket.
Motorcycle jackets are taking a backseat this year, and the militarystyle jacket is taking its place. Short or long, in bright colors or muted tones, the key is finding a sleek silhouette with buttons and standup collar. Depending on your body shape, epaulettes or flap pockets can be your friend or foe. Full-busted 12 | northsidewoman.com | september2018
You can multitask, problem solve, meet deadlines, and talk your way into (or out of) situations all while in the drive-thru line at Starbucks.
women should look for a jacket with fewer accoutrements. Small-busted women can embrace double-breasted styles with large pockets.
Embrace the high waist.
Like their shoulder pad sisters, high-waisted pants have been creeping back into mainstream fashion and are not leaving anytime soon. This fall, embrace this old/new silhouette by purchasing a new pair of jeans in dark or fashionably faded denim, and find your natural waist again. (For those youngsters and young-at-heart, your natural waist is where your bellybutton resides.)
Final tip:
Give your yoga pants and sweatshirt a break from the public eye. You would be surprised by what a new pair of jeans, a cute jacket and fresh accessories can do for your mood, and how people interact with you. ■
You long for a job with a flexible schedule and earnings that reward you for results. You love your community and desire to make a meaningful difference, to get up in the morning knowing that what you will do today makes life better for your friends and neighbors. You want a ridiculously short commute. Northside Woman is looking for natural-born persuaders and promoters to help local small businesses get bigger and better. If this is you, we want to talk to you about joining the Nothside Woman sales team.
The benefits:

Writers provide the entertainment at monthly literary dinner theaters
Authors reading from their work in Alpharetta Aug. 12 included, from left, Susan Abel, Ed Gruber, Anna Schachner, Marsha Cornelius and Ricki Schultz.
By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer

n spring 2016, author Marsha Cornelius attended a onenight affair in Lawrenceville called Noir at the Bar. Held in cities nationwide, the evening featured crime writers reading from their work as fans gathered to sip, snack and soak in the suspense. On the drive back to her Cherokee County home, Cornelius had a novel idea: Why not host something similar in Canton? Friends and followers could meet at a restaurant for a literary dinner theater. She could invite local authors representing a different genre every month, and the functions could be called, well, A Novel Idea. Cornelius’s vision soon became reality when six mystery/thriller writers kicked off the first A Novel Idea in a Canton pub. Other themes followed: beach reads, science fiction/fantasy, Southern writers, romance, scary stories, crime, memoir/nonfiction, historical, commercial, cross genres. The evenings proved such a hit that in February, Cornelius decided to “give the authors another audience” by bringing A Novel idea to Alpharetta. Three months later, at the request of author Kathy Wilson Florence, Cornelius lent her support to a third chapter in Dunwoody, which Florence manages. A Novel Idea evenings at all three locations are similarly structured. Genres are shuffled as a rotating roster of local writers read excerpts from their work every month, except December. Authors bring door prizes — from autographed books to pickled vegetables, compliments of a farm-book essayist. Admission is free. Fans only pay for what they order, be it drinks, dinner, dessert or any of the authors’ volumes of work. In Alpharetta, A Novel Idea is held at 6:30 p.m. the second Sunday of the month at Alpha Soda, 11760 Haynes Bridge Road. September’s theme will be memoir/nonfiction, with readings from Mark Beaver, William Rawlings, Mike Buchanan, Keryl Oliver, Jodi McDaniel Lowery and Kathy Williams. Cornelius emcees the Alpharetta and Canton events, providing attendees with information on featured authors and the upcoming schedule. She also tackles the laborious task of securing six different wordsmiths for three different venues each month. Add to that promotions and social media postings, and A Novel Idea truly is what its volunteer founder
14 | northsidewoman.com | september2018
calls it — “a labor of love” that, while daunting, still leaves time for her own writing. “I’ve had a book a year since 2011,” said Cornelius, whose seventh novel, “Into the Pond,” was published in December 2017. Cornelius even joins the panel when her genres — mystery/thriller, science fiction or mainstream drama — are showcased at the popular events. “Everybody loves it,” she said. “The authors, the restaurants and the guests. So it’s just a win-win-win.” Scott Boruff, current owner of Alpha Soda, a 98-year Alpharetta institution, agrees. “It’s great for business,” Boruff said. “And everybody seems to enjoy it.” Writers are especially appreciative. “I love the format of A Novel Idea and the concept of literary dinner theater,” said Roswell writer Marilyn Baron. “It gives authors a chance to do dramatic readings of their work and meet other authors and new readers in an informal, fun setting.” That opportunity is a gift to local writers and their reading audience. "Reading is a solitary activity. Most times, so is writing,” said Forsyth County author Linda Sands. “But at least once a month at A Novel Idea, writers and readers pull themselves off couches and away from computers to share their love of the written word. “Marsha Cornelius has given our community an amazing gift with this literary dinner theater,” Sands said, “and I'm proud to be a part of it." ■
A NOVEL IDEA Held in Alpharetta the second Sunday each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Alpha Soda, 11760 Haynes Bridge Road • Sept. 9 – Memoir/Nonfiction • Oct. 14 – Cross Genre • Nov. 11 – Historical Fiction A Novel Idea events are also offered in Canton and Dunwoody. ‘TIS the SEASON for REASON By KAY PASCHAL
Peachtree Park Prep, Owner
M
y mother’s reason for every command was “because I said so!” Today’s relationship of reasoning with children, especially when it comes to routines, is much more complicated than that….and a lot more time consuming! Getting to bed on time, getting up on time, homework time, soccer, ballet, piano, baseball, football, and on and on, the life of a child is very busy! If parents don’t establish a routine for their child, things will go haywire….not to mention parents’ schedules and time management being in chaos. September is the perfect time to establish the reason for routines with children. If anyone is like me, the remaining couple of weeks of August still had a summer time vibe even though it was back to school time, so it was pretty tough to establish a reason for a routine when there was still the argument from kids that the pool was still open and it was not getting dark until way past when children should be getting in bed! September is soon enough to say “ok everyone, you know what to expect with getting up early for school, the pool is closed, it’s back to business”…and a routine…. and take it from there Brain research supports that whatever a child’s home life is like is what their brain will search for as a pattern in school. If a child’s home life is without rules, structure, or reason then they will find it hard to reason why they should follow rules and structure at school. Establishing boundaries that model reasonable expectations for time management and routines makes home life so much more productive and enjoyable, makes a child’s school life predictable for them, and just makes for a happier child. Children who know what to expect and what is expected of them are just happier. So ~ we are all reasonable adults. We know that routines need to be established for a productive home life and school life for children. Will they accept it without a lot of whining, arguing, reasoning of their own, or creative manipulation? Who knows? But stay strong and if all reasoning fails, you always have the wisdom of our parents……”because I said so”……. ■ Kay Paschal is the proud owner of Peachtree Park Prep founded in 1995. Enjoying the students' achievements & successes, past and present, is her favorite past time!

ith everything going digital these days, it’s no surprise that in 2017 about one in 15 people became victims of identity theft. It may feel as though you have no control over the safety of your identity; however, safeguarding your personal information might be easier than you think. Here are a few tips on how to protect your identity: • Place credit freezes: For a small fee, approximately $3 per report, you can freeze your credit at the three main credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian). This will prevent anyone from opening new lines of credit in your name, including you. You can leave the freeze indefinitely and only lift it when you are attempting to open a legitimate new line of credit. This can also prevent you from making an impulse decision about opening a new credit card or store card based on its benefits. • File tax returns as soon as possible: Filing your tax return as soon as possible can prevent a thief from using your Social Security number to file a fraudulent return in your name. • Sign up for Credit Karma: I am a huge fan of sites like Credit Karma, which let you check your credit score multiple times a day. It will also show any bills that have gone to collections, so you can resolve those immediately before they become a bigger issue. • Obtain copies of your credit report: Even with Credit Karma, it’s important to obtain a copy of your credit report from the three main credit bureaus. You are entitled to one free report per year, per bureau. • Make social media privacy a priority: This should go without saying, but keep your personal information private on social media. It can be easy for people to put together your kids’ names, favorite sports teams and pets’ names to figure out your passwords. Extra tip: Make your passwords hard to decipher. hat started as a hobby became a full-time job for Alpharettabased jewelry-maker and Lisa Jill Jewelry Collection owner Lisa Resnick. And she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I am truly passionate about making jewelry,” Resnick said. “Everything around me is inspiration.” Resnick creates hundreds of unique, handcrafted pieces of jewelry, including necklaces, bracelets, earrings and pendants. Each season, she varies the styles and gems she uses, so that customers can always find a new and unique piece. In fall and winter, for example, Resnick tends to incorporate pearls, garnets, pyrite and labradorite. But in the spring and summer, she selects brighter gemstones, reminiscent of blooming flowers. Resnick has been involved in art and fashion for as long as she can remember. “I always enjoyed making things with my hands,” Resnick said. “I was crafty and creative and loved fashion, but I wasn’t necessarily a fine artist … I just loved to design and make things, especially wearable art that I can see, use and wear daily.” As a teenager, Resnick would create wearable art such as macrame and beaded bracelets and hand-painted and tie-dyed T-shirts, jeans and jackets, and sell them in local boutiques. That passion led her to the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Art, where she graduated with a bachelor’s of fine arts degree after taking classes in art history, fashion design, painting, sculpting, ceramics and jewelry-making.

Jewelry-maker an d Lisa Jill Jewelry Collection owner Lisa Resn ick.
With degree in hand, Resnick moved to New York City, where she began work in the fashion field as a fashion and textile designer, art director and fashion trend forecaster. In 1990, Resnick moved to Long Island to raise her family, but continued her fashion career in Manhattan. She also continued making things with her hands, especially jewelry. Her pieces incorporated chains, pendants and beads she would find in nearby antique stores and vintage markets. “I would combine these elements to make unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry,” Resnick said. “I had a long commute to get to and from my job, so I would use that time to make jewelry while sitting on the train. I enjoyed making it so much that I would just give pieces to friends, family and coworkers, so I would have a reason to keep making it.” When Resnick began selling her creations in several boutiques and stores throughout New York and Long Island, her hobby became a second full-time job. In 2001, Resnick decided to leave her full-time job and long commute to spend more time with her family and pursue Lisa Jill Jewelry full-time in her home studio. Her career blossomed after Resnick and her family moved to the North Fulton area and she started her Instagram page, where she was able to reach a much larger audience. In 2018, she launched her own e-commerce website to further expand her business. While her work can be long and demanding at times, Resnick said she loves every minute of designing, creating and marketing her creations. “Even though Lisa Jill Jewelry is now very much a business,” she said, “I still have the excitement and passion for designing and making jewelry as if it were still my favorite hobby.” Her jewelry can be found online at lisajilljewelry.com, on both Facebook and Instagram @lisajilljewelry and locally at The Urban Farmhouse in Milton. ■

eptember is a perfect time to enjoy a day trip to Georgia’s newest state historic site – Hardman Farm. The Hardman Farm State Historic Site is located in the historic community of Sautee Nacoochee, near Helen Georgia, less than 1-1/2 hour drive from North Atlanta. Take a guided tour of the elegant Hardman Farm Main House, built in 1870, Italianate design by Captain James Nichols. The home has the original 19th century furnishings and accessories giving you the authentic feel of what life was really like in the late 1800’s. The home tour takes you through the dining room, parlor, and the bedrooms upstairs including the bedroom of Anna Ruby Nichols, namesake for nearby Anna Ruby Falls. After the home tour, enjoy a self-guided tour strolling the 173 acre property to see the 19 outbuildings including a spring house, carriage house, horse barn, caretaker’s house and dairy barn. The focus of the Hardman farm was the dairy barn which grew into the semi-automated Nacoochee Dairy, owned and operated from 1910 – 1920’s by the family of Dr. Lamartine Hardman, Governor of Georgia, from 1927-1931. You will learn how milk was processed and transported during the time. The most well recognized place on the Hardman Farm is the Nacoochee Indian Mound, a pre-historic burial site used long before the Cherokee inhibited this area. This beautiful gazebo-topped Indian mound stands in protected solitude in a cow pasture and is one of the most photographed sites in North Georgia. The Georgia Spirit of Appalachia Food, Wine & Art Festival will be celebrated on the grounds of the Hardman Farm on Saturday Sept 15, 2018 from 10am to 5pm. Admission is Free. Parking is $10. ver since Viagra was introduced, people have wondered about a “little pink pill” for women, equivalent to that “little blue pill” for men. Where is the pill that will address women’s sexual problems? Of course for men, the greatest sexual problem is achieving and maintaining visible signs of physical arousal. For women, the greatest sexual problem is experiencing sexual desire in the first place. Because desire originates in the brain, the “pink pill” has to work on the brain, not on the body. In 2015, a pill was approved that is aimed at solving this problem. Marketed as Addyi, it is a chemical called flibanserin. Unlike Viagra, which works on the hydraulics of blood flow, flibanserin works on the neurotransmitters in the brain that are believed to be responsible for desire. But one of the things we know about women is that desire is more than the result of the biochemical state of the brain. In the real world of long-term relationships,
desire is driven by a whole host of factors: feelings about a partner, feelings about oneself, body-image, attitudes about sex and sexuality, life stressors, fatigue, worries, lack of time and more. So, how well does it work? As with most relationship issues, “it’s complicated.” Researchers found that women taking flibanserin reported an average of 3.8 more “satisfying sexual experiences” per month than before. But women taking a placebo (a sugar pill), also reported an average of 3.4 more sexually satisfying experiences. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration determined that this difference was significant enough to conclude that the drug works. On the other hand, the response of non-medicated women suggested another conclusion: the best way for women to increase their interest in sex is to purposefully think about sex – as well as addressing all of the issues that get in the way, of course. The good news about this approach is that it doesn’t require a prescription and has few side effects, other than more physical pleasure and an improved relationship. ■

HER BEAUTY
Get movie star looks without the red carpet drama By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
S
usan Madras would rather be seen in public wearing pajamas than without her “eyelashes.” “Seriously, I have a problem,” laughed the Roswell mom and lash extension aficionado. “They are just part of my look that completes me and makes me feel put together — even if I’m wearing no makeup.” Madras is among the growing number of women helping fuel the multimillion dollar false eyelash business; and taking the trend from special occasions to everyday events. Bobbi Brown makeup artist Cynthia Morrison Eike (visagedesigns@gmail. com) says the retro look of lush, luxurious eyelashes made popular by models like Twiggy in the 1960s is roaring back. “False lashes were all MORRISON-EIKE the rage in the 1960s and have once again become popular,” said Morrison Eike, a makeup artist and skincare specialist for more than 30 years. “Wearing them for special events like weddings has never gone out of style, but the trend is now common for every day, as women have rediscovered [how] to transform their makeup look.” One can probably thank (or blame) the Kardashians for making false lashes the “must haves” for daily wear. But credit goes to YouTube for pushing out tutorials on how to best apply the often temperamental strips of lashes and glue. These videos, which number in the tens of thousands, have made it much easier to bring the look of red carpet eyes to a makeup mirror near you. For the novice wearer, Morrison Eike recommends starting with very subtle strips or individual lashes, then practice applying and wearing them a few times. Look for false lashes that provide the level of impact you want. “Fuller, longer strips give the most drama, while wispy, shorter ones look most natural,” she explained. “Some lashes are made of human hair (and are more expensive), but the most widely available and affordable are synthetic fiber.” She cautions that strip eyelashes must be removed daily, but can be used several times with proper care. Individual lashes applied with waterproof glue can stay on for up to two weeks through showers, sleep and swimming. Avoid any oil-based products around these lashes, as it dissolves the glue.
For a more natural look, many women are turning to professional technicians for lash extensions. This process involves gluing individual lashes to existing lashes to create more length and volume. But be prepared for a significant beauty investment; the price tag can run hundreds of dollars for the initial set of lashes, followed by routine maintenance every few weeks to refresh the look. As with all beauty enhancements, buyer beware. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates all cosmetics, advises consumers to use care with false eyelashes or extensions.
False lashes were all the rage in the 1960s and have once again become popular. Wearing them for special events like weddings has never gone out of style, but the trend is now common for every day, as women have rediscovered [how] to transform their makeup look.”

These products, as well as their adhesives, must meet the safety and labeling requirements for cosmetics, according to the FDA, to avoid an allergic reaction, irritation or injury to the delicate eye area. Look for an ingredient declaration on the label to ensure the product is safe and not misbranded (or counterfeit). Dr. Gayle Leff Goldstein, an ophthalmologist with Georgia Ophthalmology Associates, is seeing an increasing number of patients with complications created by false eyelashes and extensions, most often GOLDSTEIN caused by improper care and cleaning. “I see a lot of women wearing false eyelashes, and although they look nice, I agree with the dangers that have been publicized,”
HER BEAUTY said Leff Goldstein, who has offices in Decatur and Snellville. “[False] eyelashes can make natural ones more difficult to grow [and] actually fall out. They can also trap bacteria, exacerbating a condition known as blepharitis, which can cause red, irritated eyes and often light sensitivity.” She advises wearers to gently clean the eyelashes daily to remove any bacteria. (She recommends Ocusoft and Avenova as good products for cleansing.) She also recommends using artificial tears to keep eyes sufficiently hydrated. The weight and thickness of false lashes may prevent the eye from closing completely when blinking, which can lead to dry eyes and clogged oil glands. Most issues arise from over-wearing the lashes. Leff Goldstein recommends no more than two weeks of continuous wear, then allowing your eyes to rest and recover before reapplying. While most of the cases she sees are manageable with better cleaning and care, there are real issues that can develop. “In the worst-case scenario, you can get develop a corneal ulcer similar to the [condition caused by] over-wearing a contact lens,” she said. “And, honestly, I have seen a few patients who have glued their eyelids shut when trying to apply lash glue.” If long eyelashes are your goal, but the thought of false lashes and extensions concern you, there are other options. While originally developed as a treatment for glaucoma, the prescription product Latisse (Bimatoprost 0.03 percent) has proven effective in growing eyelashes. Magnetic lashes are another option, said Morrison Eike. Magnetic lashes have upper and lower lash segments that magnetically sandwich onto your own lashes, with no glue necessary. ■

irl Scouts of Greater Atlanta and Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. have released 30 new badges that address some of society’s most pressing needs, such as cybersecurity, environmental advocacy, mechanical engineering, robotics, computer science and space exploration. These badges are now available exclusively for girls ages 5–18 to enhance their one-of-a-kind Girl Scout experience. These new badges help Girl Scouts develop both soft skills like confidence and perseverance, as well as hard skills like design thinking and computer programming. The new programming for girls in grades 6–12 includes: • Environmental Stewardship badges, Girl Scouts’ first-ever badge series focused on environmental advocacy. • Badges that teach girls how to program, design and showcase robots, completing the suite of Robotics badges first introduced for grades K–5 last year. • The College Knowledge badge for Girl Scouts in grades 11 and 12, the first badge completely dedicated to college exploration. • Two Girl Scout Leadership Journeys. Think Like a Programmer provides a strong foundation in computational thinking and the framework for Girl Scouts’ first-ever national Cyber Challenge, coming in 2019. The Think Like an Engineer Journey exposes girls to design thinking to understand how engineers solve problems. • Girls in grades K–5 can now earn badges in: • Environmental Stewardship, through which girls learn
GIRL POWER
how to respect the outdoors and take action to protect the natural world. (Funded by the Elliott Wildlife Values Project.) • Cybersecurity, introducing girls to age-appropriate online safety and privacy principles, information on how the internet works and how to spot and investigate cybercrime. (Funded by Palo Alto Networks) • Space Science, enabling girls to channel their inner NASA scientist as they learn about objects in space and how astronomers conduct investigations. (Funded by NASA’s Science Mission Directorate and led by the SETI Institute.) • Mechanical Engineering for Girl Scout Juniors, through which girls in grades 4 and 5 design paddle boats, cranes and balloon-powered cars, learning about buoyancy, potential and kinetic energy, machines and jet propulsion. “Across the country, people are having powerful conversations about the increasingly strong voice of young people who want to change the world and the lack of women in leadership positions in the United States — two topics Girl Scouts is uniquely positioned to address,” said Amy Dosik, CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. “I am so proud that our new programming continues to push girls to be forwardthinking and equips them with the skills they need to make the world a better place. We believe in the power of all girls, and we invite them to strengthen their unique abilities by joining Girl Scouts.” For information, to join or volunteer, visit girlscoutsATL. org. ■

I like to make these in the shape of little footballs. They're always a touchdown with friends and family at tailgate parties. Makes 5 hand pies. Ingredients: 1 pound ground chuck 1 onion, chopped 2 tablespoons yellow mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup ketchup 2 recipes SB Pie Dough (page 17 in the cookbook) Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the meat and onion in a large skillet. Cook, breaking up meat with a spoon until it is no longer pink and the onions are softened. Drain excess grease from meat. Add the mustard, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce and ketchup, and then simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Roll out dough into two (12-inch) circles. Cut five hand-size football shapes out of each circle for a total of 10 footballs. Re-roll the scraps if needed to get all the football shapes. Place five football shapes on parchment. Spoon Sloppy Joe mixture evenly onto each shape. Place remaining five football shapes over the mixture and press around the edges to seal closed. Using a sharp knife, cut slits in the top of each football to look like the laces. Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden brown. ■

f you’ve just had a baby, then congratulations on your new bundle of joy! If you’re a brand-new mom, the thought of exercising probably isn’t high on your priority list. Right now, you’re more focused on feeding routines, your body’s hormone changes and, of course, trying to find a moment to sleep. Pregnancy, childbirth and the early infant stages can be physically and mentally exhausting. If you feel out of shape, but are afraid to get back in the gym, relax. These great training tips are tailormade for new moms. 1. Don’t rush: While you may wish to return to your pre-pregnancy shape before you’ve even left the hospital, remember that your body has just been through an ordeal. It’s really important that you allow yourself time to properly recover. 2. Buy a good sports bra: Your body has gone through numerous changes, and your old sports bra may not be up to the job. Buy a good sports bra before you start training to ensure that you get the support you need and don’t feel uncomfortable. If you’re breastfeeding, you will need to factor that in as well. 3. Focus on exercises that help your post-baby

body: Childbirth can often weaken the pelvic floor muscles. After you have allowed six weeks to pass from your delivery, you can begin to incorporate exercises that will strengthen the pelvic muscles into your new fitness routine. But be careful not to overdo it – and definitely avoid doing tummy crunches before those six weeks have passed. 4. Be careful with weight training: Childbirth, especially Caesarean-sections or births that involved stitches, can mean no heavy lifting for some time afterward. CrossFit offers plenty of effective exercises you can do without the weights. We recommend that you check with your doctor and one of our trainers before lifting. 5. After-school outdoors
OUTDOOR WOMAN
By STEVE HUDSON Contributing Writer
S
o school’s over for the day, and the kids have just walked in the door. What’s a mom to do? Some turn on the TV. Others, however, know that those magic hours between school and supper-and-homework provide a great time for a little outdoor recreation. It’s good for the kids. It’s good for you. Everybody wins! With that in mind, here are some after-school outdoor activity possibilities that you and your kids will want to check out. They’re all fun -- and kid (and mom) approved too!
from many of the Wills Park parking areas, including the lot near the Equestrian Center off Wills Road. You might even see me out there, for I’ll still go out and toss a disk every now and then. I’m easy to find too. I’m the one looking for a lost disc in the underbrush!
A Greenway excursion
Wills Park Disk Golf
My kids discovered disc golf years ago. We would go out and toss disks in the yard when they were little, and as they got a bit older they loved to go and “play a few holes” after school. The routine went like this. They’d get off the school bus, grab a snack, and then walk over to Wills Park, home to a neat and very convenient disc golf course. Often they went with friends, and sometimes I’d go with them, too, even when they grew old enough to go by themselves. The kids were pretty good at disc golf and could send the little flying disk flying straight and true, threading it between trees and even curving it around obstacles or glancing it off the grass. But (truth be told) when it came to disc golf I was pretty lousy. It would take me four or five or ten tosses to get the disc even close to the basket, while the kids would do the same thing with just a couple of throws. However, it didn’t matter whether I was any good at it or not. We were outdoors, and we were having fun, and we were doing it together. The nice thing about disc golf is that you don’t have to start at any particular point on a course. All you have to do is pick out a hole and start playing. That makes it perfect for an after-school outdoor adventure, and the Wills Park Disc Golf Course is laid out in a way that provides many points of access. It’s easy to get started too. You can pick up a couple of basic golf discs at just about any sporting goods store, and then you can go to the park and play a few holes. If time is short, just a couple of holes will make for a great after-school outing; if you have more time, just keep playing till it’s time to head home for homework and supper. The Wills Park Disc Golf Course can be accessed

One of the easiest after-school outdoor adventures is a quick hike on the Big Creek Greenway. The greenway covers a lot of ground, literally and figuratively, but it’s not hard to zoom in on some great after-school possibilities. One of my favorites is a short loop hike that you can make from the parking area Rock Mill Park. From the parking area, follow the trail toward the creek and the road, where you’ll intersect the main greenway trail. Once you reach the intersection, turn around and wave because at that point you’re on the live rivercam which is focused on the trail near the bridge! There’s something about being on the rivercam that can make your day. After a day of school, when you have to sit still and all that, it’s refreshing to be able to wave and jump up and down and all the rest – especially if you have alerted friends or family to be watching for you. From there, turn left and follow the paved greenway to the next paved trail on your left; that will take you back to the parking area. It’s a nice little hike, and it’s a good choice if you’re looking for a short and easy bike ride too. Of course, you can also make more extended trips on the trail too. Rock Mill Park is located at 3100 Kimball Bridge Road. The rivercam can be accessed at www2.usgs.gov/ water/southatlantic/ga/rivercam/webcam-bigcreek.htm. Put them together, and it’s a great recipe for an hour or two outdoors.
Island Ford Rock Shelters
What is my favorite afternoon hike? That’s a good question, but one that’s always been near the top of the list is in-and-out hike to see the ancient Native American rock shelters at the Island Ford Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. Island Ford is one of several “units” in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area; it’s also the headquarters location for the entire park. From the visitor center, a network of trails spiderwebs over wooded hillsides and across the river’s floodplain. Where do the trails go? If you explore this area, you’ll find a variety of natural environments – but one of the most intriguing things you’ll encounter is a
stop self-guided interpretive hike which focuses on learning about watersheds and how humans can impact them. You can download the nature trail guide at bigtreesforest.com/learn.html. It’s something that kids of all ages will enjoy. Or you can just hike for the sheer joy of hiking. Trails crisscross the area – and since there are a number of trails at Big Trees, you can mix and match to suit that particular day’s schedule. I like to hike the big loop, if I have time, but numerous short hikes are possible too. And here’s a challenge: See if you can find the decorated Christmas tree alongside one of the trails. series of rock shelters used in times past by the Native Americans who once called this area home. A hike to see those rock shelters is a perfect way to get outdoors following a day in a desk at school. The trail that takes you to them begins behind Hewlett Lodge, the park’s visitor center. From there, it follows the river downstream. As you hike, look to the left side of the trail (away from the river) for the overhanging rocks which form the shelters. Several of these shelters are located right beside the trail, and you and your kids will have no trouble following the short side trails which take you to them. There’s something truly special about standing in a spot where Native Americans stood centuries ago, and your kids will love the sense of mystery and adventure! I recall one day, years ago, when my daughter and I were hiking there and actually had to take refuge under one of the shelters when a late-summer thundershower threatened to drench us with rain. Yes, the shelter worked fine – and they still do too. The entrance to the Island Ford Unit is at 8800 Roberts Drive in Sandy Springs. It’s easily accessible from either Georgia 400 or Highway 9/Roswell Road. You’ll turn onto Island Ford Parkway at the large entrance sign; then drive to the end of the road and the visitor center. Follow the trail around the left side of the building toward the river and the Riverside Trail; then hike downstream (away from the visitor center) to find the rock shelters. The only tough part may be getting the kids to turn around and head for home once the hiking is done. It really is that much fun.
A hike at Big Trees Preserve
If you live more toward Roswell and Sandy Springs, you’ll enjoy exploring the Big Trees Preserve, a 30-acre forest preserve located just off Roswell Road about four miles north of I-285 and next to the North Fulton County Government Annex facility. Put 7645 Roswell Road into your GPS, and you’ll get there without any trouble. For an after-school outing, Big Trees is close to ideal. It’s easy to get to. There’s plenty of parking. The trailhead (located at the south end of the parking area) is easy to find. And once you start walking, you’ll almost forget that you’re just a stone’s throw from auto dealerships, businesses and traffic. You may decide to visit Big Trees for a little bit of low-key environmental education. There’s a 15-

Look for goats at Buford Dam
Who doesn’t love goats? They’ve been much in the news lately, especially since it’s become common knowledge that goats make short work of undergrowth. They’re nature’s own land clearing machines, to be sure, and as a result you’ll find them hard at work in all sorts of places these days. Some of the most interesting working goats you’ll find are the “goats with a mission” on Buford Dam. Yes, that Buford Dam. Sure enough, there really are goats at the dam – and looking for them is a great way to enjoy some outdoor time before it’s time to settle down for homework. These goats are charged with keeping the undergrowth under control on parts of the dam that are too steep to safely mow. It would be a risky thing to tackle those slopes with a mower or a bushhog, but for the sure-footed goats it’s a piece of cake (and a free lunch too). You can often see the goats from Buford Dam Road, the winding two-lane road that goes across the top of the dam. But the best goat-viewing spot (if the goats are feeling cooperative) may be at the far end of the parking area at Lower Pool East Park. This area is accessible from the east end of the dam via Buford Dam Road or from the west end of the dam via Lower Pool Road by crossing the footbridge over the spillway. Sometimes the goats seem shy and won’t approach the nearby fence, but at other times they’ll walk right up as if to say hello. In addition to the goats, you may see the resident mule, too. It’s the mule’s job to protect the goats from coyotes or other threats. Looking for these four-footed lawn mowers is a great way to enjoy some after-school outdoor time, and they’re there year-round. ■ september2018 | northsidewoman.com | 29

he living room is the area of the home where we welcome guests or relax after a long day. These rooms vary in size and usually accommodate larger pieces of furniture that often define the layout of the space. The proper selection of sofas, chairs, coffee tables, end tables and consoles are critical to a good design. When you are looking to add those extra finishing touches to your room, remember that accessories and accents will make the difference. Seasonal accessories are small and can easily be exchanged throughout the year, allowing for you to bring a change to your living room without a great expenditure or going through a big renovation. Coffee tables are usually in the center of the living room, often setting the mood and defining the ambiance, so you want to embellish them with objects that are eye-catching. A tray with accompanying accessories is a great element to add dimension to your table scape. Large candles make great coffee table centerpieces that will never go out of style. LOVE YOUR HOME – It’s an investment in your future
A
s a REALTOR®, I know how important it is to love your home. The more you love it, the more you will care for it. In real estate, if you care for your home and keep up with the times, great returns will come when it’s time to sell. September is a time of transition. In the beginning of the month, you can still feel the laid-back feeling of summer, and by the end, you will start feeling the nip of the cool air. Here are some helpful hints and ideas for GINA CAMPBELL ushering in the fall season.
ON THE INSIDE
Kids are back to school. Think about organizing yourself for fall, shorter evenings are on their way … plan ahead and be prepared. Declutter your kitchen. Declutter your fridge, cabinets, pantries, etc. to make for efficient spaces for quick meal time. Donate whatever you don’t need and discard whatever has expired. Schedule chimney and furnace maintenance. Make an appointment with a professional to ensure your fireplace and heating system are clean, safe and ready to go. A clean chimney cleaned will also reduce your risk of fire! Organized storage. Pantries, closets and homework areas are great places to maximize smaller areas. Built-in storage solutions are attractive to buyers and will keep the clutter out of your living spaces. Keep in mind that storage solutions should be functional and attractive. Maintain the washer and dryer. Cleaning out the dryer vents can be a DIY job, but if you don’t feel comfortable doing so (or if you’ve been putting it off), you may want to hire a pro to do washer and dryer
maintenance for you. Washing machine hoses need to be replaced from time to time, and a cracked hose can cause a leak — which can mean costly damage to your home. Clean dryer vents and hoses will help your machine work more efficiently and reduce the risk of fire.

Even a simple week night dinner feels special when enjoyed outside! If you want to make your outdoor dining area feel extra special, string up cafe lights and line the center of the table with candles. Focus on curb appeal. Trim and prune the overgrowth from summer blooms. If you are considering fescue grass seed for your property, now is the time. Fescue grows best in September and October in Georgia. Toward the end of the month, replace annuals with pansies for color all winter long. Keep shrubs trimmed below your window lines to be showcase the beauty of your home. Pet Accidents By MARY WARREN
A
re you sniffing a strange odor coming from your dining room rug? Do you see yellow spots in your favorite ivory colored area rug? Pet urine accidents are part of having a pet in your home. How to remove the odor and urine residue is the challenge. Once the urine odor is in an area, your pet can claim it as “my place”! Removing urine can take away the urge for the pet to keep using that area. Pet accidents on your Oriental rug need to be MARY WARREN cleaned up as soon as you find them - hopefully, when it is still wet. Cotton towels and clean water are the best to use. Where urine accident happened, place a towel under the rug. Use another towel to blot up liquid, spray with clear water and blot again using two clean towels. Continue until you feel the urine is removed. DO NOT RUB - it will fuzz the fibers and change the look of the fibers in that area. Dry the area quickly by lifting the rug and adding air movement with a fan. Do not use a hair dryer! Dried urine crystals will be harder to remove at home. When urine dries in the fiber of your rug, it forms a hard, uric acid crystal, which cannot be cleaned with soap and water alone. Professional help may be needed to remove the urine residue, and the odor! Additionally, urine can fade dye colors, can add a yellow color or cause the existing colors to bleed into each other. The longer urine stains stay in your rug the more the damage is and the harder color problems can be to correct. Contact Cristomar with questions about area rug cleaning or pet urine problems. hen starting a furniture plan for a client, I typically start with the foundation: a great rug. I firmly believe that a rug is one of the most important design aspects of a room and can completely transform any space. With the endless options available for area rugs, it can be an overwhelming task picking the right choice for your space. The guide below highlights the types of rugs I use most often, and it should help you when considering your next rug purchase. 1. Hand-knotted wool rugs: These are by far my most favorite rug to use, if budget allows. Most hand-knotted rugs are made in India, and each knot is individually tied to create intricate patterns and designs. Color can be muted, or bright and bold. No two rugs are alike, as they are 100 percent knotted by hand. Wool rugs are soft, durable, and will last a lifetime if properly cared for. Blot spills immediately with a white cloth and vacuum regularly. Some shedding can be completely normal, but will stop after a few months. Expert tip: Always turn off the beater bar option when vacuuming any wool rug or carpeting. Suction only. 2. Natural fiber rugs (sisal, jute and seagrass): Natural fiber rugs are a terrific option for any room of your home or in high-traffic areas. The fibers are durable and offer lots of texture to create an organic look. Natural fiber rugs are so versatile and truly complement any style. The price point is very appealing, especially because these rugs can be custom-cut and sized to fit any space. They also look fantastic layered under smaller, more costly rug options. Just like wool rugs, vacuum regularly and blot up spills immediately. 3. Broadloom: On a strict budget? A broadloom carpet can give you the texture, color and size you want. Broadloom is basically wall-to-wall carpeting that can be cut and sized as an area rug. The edges are serged to prevent any raveling. Remember, size of an area rug is also very important; but that is another topic for another day! â– september2018 | northsidewoman.com | 39

HER GARDEN
Growing herbs is always très chic By ABRA LEE
Contributing Writer
I
have a friend named Lamia, and like the proper French woman that she is, Lamia always oozes style. Before she moved back to Europe last year, I visited her home in Florida for one last shebang. Inside, I noticed Lamia had one plant — a pot of basil in the kitchen. This simple, beautiful herb was the only houseplant she needed. You see, herbs are the must-have accessory of every garden, and there is no excuse not to have at least one. Herbs are grown from seeds or cuttings and pretty much ask for two things: lots of sunshine (at least six hours per day) and well-drained soil. Getting sunshine is not a problem. However, the dominant clay soil of our Piedmont region does create a drainage issue. Fix this by placing herbs in a raised bed or keeping them in pots. With the shrubby herbs like rosemary and variegated sage, be careful not to cut into the brown parts of the stem.

Be creative with how you grow herbs. Thyme is great, but lemon thyme in a hanging basket is interesting. A bay leaf shrub is nice, but bay leaf topiary can be an herbal work of art. Any self respecting Southerner should be growing mint. Warning: keep mint in pots, as it will take over the garden and your sanity. Separate unique varieties like pineapple or ginger mint to protect individual flavors. Punch up food by adding chopped fresh herbs like sorrel, tarragon or chives into crème fraîche or unsalted butter. Steep oregano for two to three minutes or chamomile flowers for five to 10 minutes and you’ll have tea. Whether it’s Thai basil, parsley, coriander, dill or chicory, there is an herb for every situation and season. Like my French friend Lamia, herbs are always in fashion! ■ Abra Lee is a horticulturist extraordinaire and unapologetically passionate about all things gardening. t’s only in the last year that 2-year-old Satchel finally understands what it’s like to love and be loved. He found his way to Furkids after being picked up on the streets by Animal Control officers. Satchel was in terrible shape--severely underweight, suffering from pneumonia and a host of other medical issues related to neglect. But there was something in his eyes that caught the attention of the rescue group who plucked him out of the shelter, and placed him in a loving foster home where he made a complete recovery. He learned to play with other dogs, and learned to trust and love humans for the first time in his life. Satchel is fully vetted, socialized, and ready now for his forever home. s the holidays approach, many of us consider bringing our animal family along to distant celebrations. Having our pets with us is extremely satisfying, but traveling with animals requires advanced planning. First, it is important to know the legalities and requirements of your destination early on, especially if you plan to leave the continental Dr. Joanne Roesner, United States. The consulate of your DVM, DABVP with foreign destination, the United States Charlie and Kurt. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services website or APHIS office are excellent sources of information. Be aware that some requirements must be met as much as six months in advance. For example, a rabies vaccination may be required with microchip in place at the time of vaccination, and some destinations may require official certification of documents by USDA APHIS (which requires an advance appointment) or translation into the language of destination. Even for interstate transport of pets within the United States, there can be limitations. Ferrets, for example, are not permitted entry into California, Hawaii, Washington, D.C., or New York City.

Planning holiday travel with pets
ASK THE VET
If using transportation other than a private vehicle, contact the carrier to be sure you meet their specific rules as well. Discuss all travel requirements with your veterinarian to be certain everything can be done in time. For instance, if a rabies titer is required after vaccination, this test will take at least four to six weeks to return from the laboratory. All animals should be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. These may only be issued by a veterinarian who is accredited by the USDA. Not all veterinarians maintain accreditation, and it is important that your vet is capable of writing health certificates for your species of pet. Your doctor can also discuss the stresses of travel on your pet, as well as any health risks that may impose for your individual animal. To keep your pet comfortable during travel, make certain they are well acclimated to any carrier in which they are confined. This may require training and habituation long before the day of travel. Your veterinarian can offer counsel in how to do this. Unless your pet is apt to chew things, it helps to line carriers with absorbent materials that wick away moisture, such as diapers or pee pads. Limiting food and water the day of travel will help decrease accidents, but will not completely eliminate them. A small amount of water can be frozen in a bowl that attaches to a carrier to provide moisture while limiting spills. Carriers that allow placement of a small litter source will help cats remain comfortable if the period of transport is lengthy. Clear identification, both on your pet and on your travel enclosure, are an important safeguard. If an accident occurred and your pet escaped, this would be your only hope of being reunited with your pet. Remember, especially during busy holiday times, we are responsible for our pet’s behavior. Dogs, or any other animal, in airports should always be under control and on a leash. They should be maintained quietly to prevent disruption to others’ travel experiences. It is critical that you prevent potential for aggression from your pet. Severely fearful or anxious pets, who would not bite at home, may demonstrate aggression under the stress of travel. Most major airports have designated pet elimination areas. It is the pet parent’s responsibility to clean up their pet’s waste here or anywhere else in the facility. Traveling with small pets in the cabin of an airplane is typically available for a fee. If utilizing an animal for emotional support, carry a letter of medical necessity from your health care provider. Calling an untrained animal an emotional support pet is not only dishonest, but unfair to the animal.

State of the Art Medical/Robotic Surgery Experts for Women
T
he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim, Dr. Stacey Pereira and Dr. Christy Kenkel of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day convenient in-office procedures that require no downtime and can be done in the office. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fast-growing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

t the end of every calendar year, patients tell us they have gotten busy with work, school and holiday activities and have simply run out of time. They haven’t scheduled necessary dental treatment for themselves or their family and haven’t used their entire dental insurance benefit. Those DR. PATEL benefits will not roll over to the next year and that means you are wasting your insurance payments. Bottom line: When it comes to dental insurance benefits, USE IT OR LOSE IT! Unlike medical insurance, dental insurance and dental plans provide you with a specific dollar amount to spend on your care each year. This means you may have dental dollars that will disappear if your plan, like many, renews in January! Dr. Patel advises, “It’s always smart to try to maximize dental insurance coverage DR. CORBETT this year so that next year’s benefits can be used for any unexpected treatment that may arise.” Additionally, many plans will reset in January and that means you will again be required to pay 100% of your annual insurance deductible before your insurance company pays any dental benefits. We’re halfway through the year so we have time to schedule the treatment you need.
Now is the perfect time to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted and avoid the holiday rush! REMEMBER: DENTAL HEALTH IMPACTS REGULAR HEALTH. You may be surprised to learn that unhealthy teeth can contribute to disease such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and infection of the heart lining. Sleep apnea, a condition where you stop breathing repeatedly during the night, increases your risk of stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease. very person is born with the innate ability to smile. By around two months of age, babies can smile at the people who are closest to them. An individual’s smile can convey several different emotions, such as happiness, gratitude, friendliness, and contentment. However, there is much more to a person’s smile than conveying an emotional state. After many scientific and psychological case studies, it DR. REMALEY has been proven that an individual’s smile affects their overall health and happiness. THE SCIENCE BEHIND SMILING There is a lot more to a single smile than most people realize. The act of smiling activates neural messaging in the brain, and when a person smiles, the neurotransmitters that cause a person to feel good are released. These neurotransmitters are dopamine, endorphins, serotonin, and oxytocin. In the world of science, dopamine is known as the feel-good hormone that keeps a person motivated and enjoying life. Endorphins are released during physical activities and allow a person to overcome the pain and stress associated with the activity. Serotonin is what makes an individual feel important, and lastly, oxytocin allows people to build stronger bonds, trust, and relationships with other people. All of these neurotransmitters are key components to allowing a person to feel joy and happiness in themselves, their lives, and the people around them. Smiling is an easy way to increase the levels of these components so that you can become healthier and happier. HEALTH BENEFITS OF SMILING • Lowers blood pressure • Strengthens immune function • Provides pain relief • Increases longevity of life PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS OF SMILING • Improves overall mood • Provides stress relief • Decreases depression and anxiety CORRECTING A LESS-THANPERFECT SMILE Many people refrain from smiling because of missing, broken, crooked, and discolored teeth, or even because of bad breath. Having a less-than-perfect smile can rob an individual of their self-esteem, self-confidence, and the many other health benefits that smiling can provide. Could your golf game be hazardous to your health By DR. BRENT TAYLOR
Premier Dermatology and MOHS surgery of Atlanta
I
recently had a conversation with a patient about tick-borne illnesses, and our discussion reminded me of an interesting study that Iearned about in medical school – a tale that ended with the warning “don’t go into the rough.” If you haven’t heard of it, ehrlichiosisis is one of numerous diseases that ticks carry and that humans can catch when ticks bite them, but this disease was not always so well known. DR. TAYLOR The year is 1993, and four men who lived in a golf-oriented retirement community in Tennessee were hospitalized with fever, headache, vomiting and abdominal pain. Blood tests revealed abnormally low white blood cell counts, low platelets, as well as inflammation of the liver. Two of these men ended up in the intensive care unit. An astute physician ordered a test for ehrlichiosis, and all four men tested positive for this illness. This outbreak prompted the physician to assign several residents and medical students (aka “underlings”) to tramp through the woods and go door to door in this golf community gathering information about other people who might be infected. People were asked for blood samples and patients admitted to the local hospital with fever of unknown origin also had their blood tested. An “environmental survey” 48 | northsidewoman.com | september2018
was conducted of local animals to identify ticks and the diseases that they carried. As the results came in, a picture began to emerge. Most of the patients were golfers. There was a trend towards higher rates of infection in people who golfed more often. But, compellingly, it was only the bad golfers – those who averaged high scores – who seemed to be getting infected. What could be causing the bad golfers to be infected while the good golfers remained healthy? Are their immune systems, like their golf swings, simply superior to those of the bad golfers? Is charisma a factor? No, it turned out that the single factor that was most strongly associated with ehrlichiosis infection was retrieving a golf ball that was hit off the golf course instead of using a new ball. And bad golfers hit the golf ball in the rough or in the woods more often than the good golfers. In fact, golfers who retrieved their balls from the woods were 270% more likely to be infected than those who simply used a new ball. The case was cracked and the lesson was clear – don’t go into the rough. Or, if you do, use a lot of insect repellant. This tick season, remember to protect yourself. If you know a golfer, warn him or her about ehrlichiosis. Ways to look younger without surgery
T
his is a question our patients ask frequently: “I’m not ready for surgery, what do you recommend to make me look younger?” Patients want to know how to look younger without the complications and risks accompanied with major surgeries such as facelifts. Read below for our favorite results-proven treatments for the aging face. DR. PAYMAN 1. LASER RESURFACING Lasers are a wonderful treatment modality for people who want to improve sun damage, age spots, dark spots, and acne scars. Energy from the laser targets damaged skin and allows the formation of brighter, clearer skin. Our office uses the latest technology when it comes to fractional laser resurfacing. Our lasers provide the latest technology and are customized to skin type, therefore maximizing results and minimizing complications. 2. DERMAL FILLERS There are various hyaluronic acid fillers on the market which are a great choice for people who want to fill in lines and wrinkles and restore lost volume to areas such as the cheeks and chin. The fillers are each indicated for a specific part of the face and are chosen carefully by your physician based on your cosmetic needs. Fillers are fantastic because they produce immediate results and erase the wrinkles and lines instantaneously. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the human body. It is gradually metabolized by the body, and is not permanent. Fillers are a minimally painful, IMMEDIATE cosmetic fix for deep or shallow wrinkles. Our new favorite filler is Restylane Lyft—this
filler is requested most by our patients and for good reason—its results are dramatic and can be described as an instant ‘liquid facelift’. 3. INJECTABLES: Botox has been around for over 20 years. It is a fantastic way to soften lines and prevent wrinkles from deepening with time. The results can be seen in 3-5 days and injections are minimally painful. Injections of Botox can be targeted by your experienced physician to help soften and minimize lines in most places on the face, such as the forehead, between the brows, around the eyes, neck, and chin. 4. DAILY SKINCARE with the RIGHT products. Ask us for our highly effective PRESCRIPTIVE strength products, which are tested and FDA regulated for true results when it comes to battling the signs of aging. Often, over the counter products are not as effective, and have not been tested by the FDA or a regulatory organization to prove they work. If you’re spending money on skincare products, those from department stores are not going to produce guaranteed results, whereas prescriptive strength products are FDA tested and regulated for years to ensure they produce the results you expect from anti-aging products. NOTE: Always look for a board-certified physician’s office when seeking anti-aging treatments. Our office has a board-certified physician as the injector and administrator of ALL cosmetic services. Our boardcertified physician specializes in rejuvenating the aging face nonsurgically. We provide multiple levels of anti-aging treatment modalities, which are fast, minimally painful, and effective. ■
Have you had your medicare annual wellness visit?
O
lder adults with complex chronic conditions are increasing patient population. In 2015, those older than 65 years accounted for 31% of all U.S. office visits, and that proportion will continue to grow. Since 2013, every day 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 years of age and enter Medicare. By 2030, the population older than 65 years will double to 72 million (20% of the total U.S. population). Individuals are living longer, with multiple chronic illnesses, making them vulnerable to disability and diminished quality of life. Although 95% of older adults with complex needs have regular access to care, 58% struggle to navigate the system, and 62% are stressed about their ability to afford housing, utilities, or meals. Skilled physicians performing a geriatric assessment, can evaluate medical problems; cognitive, affective, and functional abilities; and social and environmental factors to identify these unrecognized needs to improve the well-being of older adults. There are key elements of a geriatric assessment. Having the right physician and being proficient in performing a geriatric assessment is important because, as society ages, older adults will constitute an increasing proportion of the population. The geriatric assessment evaluates medical, social, and environmental factors that influence overall well-being, and addresses functional status, fall risk, medication review, nutrition, vision, hearing, cognition, mood, and toileting. Immunizations and advance care planning are also important components of the geriatric assessment. The physicians at Alpha Family Medicine can tailor an assessment to your goals of care and life expectancy. By identifying specific areas for thorough intervention along with periodic geriatric assessment over several visits can also effectively identify subtle or hidden problems. Dr. Shyla Ready and Dr. Michelle Lee can perform a comprehensive geriatric assessment which can lead to early recognition of these problems that could impair the quality of your life. ■ 50 | northsidewoman.com | september2018

When is the best time to get braces? By DR. JEFFREY JORDAN Jordan Orthodontics
O
rthodontic treatment today is about faces not just braces. Consequently, facial esthetics dictates the proper timing for treatment. While treatment can contribute to the physical and psychological development of patients young and old, some patients require early intervention. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial visit to an orthodontist at age 7 for this reason. Most patients do not need early treatment, but if necessary, amazing improvements in facial esthetics and function can be accomplished. The common orthodontic problems that can be treated in between 7 and 9 years old include underbites and severe overbites as well as patients with crossbites and openbites. These conditions are considered muscular skeletal problems and are best addressed in the mixed dentition when the permanent front teeth are erupting. These treatments are referred to as dentofacial orthopedics because we are working with the bones of the face and not just the teeth. The majority of patients benefit from a single treatment during adolescence, as the last few primary teeth are lost and the second molars erupt. The exact age varies, but most patients are treated during the middle school years and can be completed by high school. Of course,

sometimes the teeth are slow to erupt and this can delay the completion of treatment. For this reason, starting treatment too early can prolong treatment duration and result in orthodontic burnout for the patients. Patient cooperation is important in keeping the treatments short in duration and efficient. Interestingly, girl’s teeth erupt earlier than boys of the same age. Teenagers are usually in a rapid growth phase during this period. As a result, dramatic results can be achieved with improved facial esthetics and function. For example, the smile can be made wider, the lower jaw can be advanced, or a gummy smile can be eliminated. A smile analysis dictates in what direction the teeth and jaws should be moved. These changes can be life altering for some patients during the teen years. Of course, adults want to look good too, and orthodontic treatment for adults is more popular than ever! Invisalign, clear braces, and improvements in surgical techniques make having a fantastic smile easier too. The bulky braces and heavy forces of yesteryear are a thing of the past. Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that move the teeth. Each aligner moves the teeth a quarter of a millimeter and is worn for about two weeks. The number of aligners is dictated by how crowded or spaced out your teeth are at the beginning. Clear or ceramic braces combined with new superelastic memory wires have made traditional orthodontic treatment more esthetic and more efficient and comfortable . The teeth move a little every day and the forces on the teeth are very light. For more dramatic changes, orthognathic surgery can totally transform ones appearance if necessary. Adults who desire improved facial esthetics can benefit from orthodontics combined with surgery to correct facial imbalances. In this situation, the braces are placed on the teeth for about six months prior to surgery and remain on the teeth for a few months after the procedure. So the best time to get treatment is when you or your child is ready to improve that smile! It’s about faces not just braces.■

Know the signs that your older loved one may need more help By HOME HELPERS OF ALPHARETTA

atching your older loved one’s behavior can help you to spot even smaller changes that mean it’s time for some extra help. Some of these changes might mean that health changes are occurring, while others could signal that they’re simply lonely and in need of more of your time and attention. You’re Getting Calls at Extremely Odd Times It's bad enough to have your phone ring in the middle of the night, displaying your older loved one’s phone number, and have there be something wrong. It can be even scarier to have your phone ringing at all hours with a simple question or just to talk. This type of behavior can be a sign that they need a little more time and attention. Socialization is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and it’s easy to lose touch with the competing pressures of everyday commitments. Behavior is Markedly Different than Usual By now, you're probably quite comfortable with your older loved one’s personality and behavior. So when that starts changing, when they’re loud in public now when they’ve always been quiet, it can be jarring. And it can also mean that there's more going on than you might think. It's worth digging a bit deeper to find out what can be causing that behavior change. Signs of Paranoia Start Surfacing Paranoia isn't always incorrect. There could be situations in their life that genuinely support worries that someone might cause them harm. Take time to have a conversation and try to find the source of their concerns. Drop in and see if there are obvious changes in their surroundings or home. If your older loved one is paranoid for no reason that you can point to, this could be a sign of bigger health issues.
