Ed and Mitzi Schepps first met at the old Alpharetta Public Library. Each year they come back to celebrate that day.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Love takes many forms. For Ed and Mitzi Schepps, that form was the old Alpharetta Public Library. Each year for 24 years, the couple have returned to the library to celebrate how they met. Mitzi said they were both part of a bike ride in August 1991 that took riders through Alpharetta and the surrounding area. It began and ended in the parking lot of the Alpharetta Library on Mayfield Road. While Ed was a seasoned

cyclist, Mitzi was a neophyte, struggling through the “easy” 18-mile ride. To top it off, when she finished, rain had set in. “I had no idea what I was doing,” Mitzi said. Rain-soaked, Mitzi finished the ride and pulled into the library parking lot. There, beneath his SUV’s hatchback, was Ed, eating Fig Newtons. Mitzi sought shelter and food and the couple began to chat. By the end of the conversation (and food) Ed had asked Mitzi out on a date that evening. “She was into the outdoors,” said Ed about what attracted him to Mitzi. “That was a big thing for me. Biking was important, and she was a veterinarian and a smart woman.” The attraction was similar

Milton resident travels to D.C. to lobby for cancer research Offering ‘Lights of Hope’ to be placed by reflecting pool By JOE PARKER news@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. - Milton resident and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Georgia State Ambassador Brenda Hamstead will travel to Washington, D.C. Sept. 27-30 as a part of National Lobby Day in an effort to ensure national

funding for cancer research. Hamstead will be joined by ACS CAN representatives from 14 Georgia congressional districts, including Phillip Hurd from District 6. Hamstead will meet with congressmen and senators from around the country to push for legislation that would improve cancer research funding. She will also work to forward a Palliative Care Act, governing end-of-life care, and to improve the availability of colorectal cancer screenings. “One of our main objec-

tives is to hold our legislators accountable for protecting cancer research funds,” said Hamstead. “We try and recommit them every time we meet with them.” According to Hamstead, “Every day we are getting closer to better treatments and therapies, but as long as funding lacks, we are leaving these treatments on the cutting room floor. We want to invest in the treatments to save lives.” During her time at the
