If I can do cancer, I can do anything” — Paula Holland De Long
I
n honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I thought it would be important to recognize the many survivors of this feared illness that surrounds us daily. I am personally connected to one of these amazing women, a survivor herself, my sister. She is in remission now, but I’m sure the idea of the cancer returning is always on her mind. As I watched my sister battle breast cancer for over 15 years, there were some valuable lessons to be learned and shared. As I’m sure there are many who have been connected to someone going through the same illness. I found how important it is to observe their needs. Allow them to tell you what they need, and listen when they talk to you about their fears. Don’t just fill the room with empty words (this can be used with anyone fighting any illness). Breast cancer can rob many of them of their future, so try to be there with them in their present. Doing something, even the simple act of wearing an awareness ribbon, can mean
SUZANNE PACEY, PUBLISHER so much to those who are fighting the fight of their life. After years of research we still don’t know why one person develops breast cancer while another does not. But what we do know is early detection can save lives. According to the American Cancer Society, every two minutes a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer — everything from “stage zero” cancer (which some doctors believe shouldn’t even be called cancer) to the deadliest form: invasive breast cancer. Thankfully, early detection and treatment has led to an increasing number of survivors. The World Cancer Research Fund International reports that there are more than 6 million breast cancer survivors worldwide. For fighters and survivors, and for those of us who know and love someone with breast cancer, this gives us a reason to celebrate October. ■
She Gives Back Do you know a woman who loves to volunteer? Tell us your suggestion of a woman that gives back and what she does for the community. She could be featured in an upcoming issue of Northside Woman! Northside Woman is all about celebrating and connecting the amazing women who live in the North Fulton and South Forsyth communities of Alpharetta, Roswell, Milton, Johns Creek and Cumming – helping you get to know your neighbors and build business and social networks which allow women to support and encourage each other.

ope Knosher knows the path to contentment comes with obstacles, challenges and often freefalls. She also knows the end is worth the journey. Knosher’s path led her to Hope’s Yoga, where she teaches people to find their inner strength and resiliency in mind and body through yoga. She knows on a personal level the solution to many problems often lies deep within. When she was in her mid-30s, Knosher developed health problems and was diagnosed as “terminally infertile” after years of trying to have a second child. The news was shocking, but Knosher knew it was also wrong. “I had already given birth to a daughter, and felt deeply that I was going to have another girl,” said Knosher, a Tennessee native who moved to Atlanta in 1986. “I remember clearly the moment I was kicked out of infertility treatment. It was part devastation, part wake-up call.” She took matters into her own hands, researching the connection between healthy foods and healthy living, and quickly realized she had been abusing her body for years. “From that moment, I changed everything,” she said. “I detoxed my body of chemicals and unhealthy foods.” The lifestyle changes worked; after an initial miscarriage she delivered a second daughter, now 17. But around the corner loomed a second, more serious challenge. In 2009, in the midst of raising her young family and in the chaos of a home renovations, the words “you have breast cancer” upended her life. “Hearing those words shook me to my core,” said Knosher, who lives in Johns Creek. “In a moment everything changed and I began a journey into the unknown. Honestly, I wasn’t sure where to turn or what to do in that moment.” The cancer diagnosis forced the normally private Knosher to open up to others and humbly accept this was a battle she could not fight on her own. “I remember being overwhelmed by all that was going on in my life...doctor appointments, treatments, surgeries, and decision making [which all] took a front seat over the next year,” Knosher said. Already a healthy eater, she stepped it up even more during her year of treatment. But she soon realized that all the good things she was putting into her body could not help the chaos that took hold of her mind. “What I didn’t tackle was what was going on inside my mind and spirit. I didn’t realize that my mind was also affecting my body,” Knosher said. It was during this time she turned to yoga, which had always been on her “to-do” list, but never checked off. Knosher knew she was in lockdown mode, with trouble sleeping, functioning, and even breathing at times because of the stress. “I had a sleep study done in hopes of getting some answers, and the doctor recommended I try yoga. I took it to heart and found a class, and, as they say, the rest is history,” she said. Like many new yoga students, she overcame her intimidation and realized yoga was not just for gymnasts, dancers, and young people. “I had an excellent teacher who welcomed me in each class and encouraged me to keep going. It was the support I needed,” Knosher said. “Over time I experienced incredible changes in my body and my mind. I began to let go and to live more fully.” The former college basketball player, whose nickname growing up was “five-twelve,” Knosher 8 | northsidewoman.com | october2017

took quickly to the physical challenges of yoga and loved what it was doing to her whole body. “In yoga, there is a saying that ‘the issues are in the tissues’, and mine were well seasoned,” Knosher laughed. “[Through yoga] I finally started releasing layers of mental and physical holding that had accumulated throughout my life. Yoga was the piece [of my life] that was missing.” She soon felt called to share yoga with others, to take what healed her and pay it forward. Knosher trained to become a certified yoga instructor and therapist, and started teaching yoga classes part time. She soon left my job as an athletic director, founded Hope’s Yoga and “haven’t looked back,” she said. Knosher has a studio in Johns Creek where she enjoys teaching smaller classes that allow her to get to know her students and the individual goals of each one. But she also takes her classes to businesses, corporations, private groups and individuals. As a yoga therapist, Knosher’s client list includes people who have cancer and chronic illness, and she has a weekly adaptive yoga class sponsored by the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. While there a number of yoga forms, Knosher teaches a gentler form of hatha yoga, with many adaptations for individuals who may be starting their yoga journey with the question, “Is yoga for me?” “By making yoga personal for each student, they can keep yoga relevant to their body and life experience no matter their situation. This way, yoga can evolve to fit their needs as they change,” she explained. She takes students on an annual retreat – this year’s excursion was to Sedona, Ariz. – and is looking to start retreats in North Georgia for cancer patients and those experiencing chronic illness. “These retreats will enable students to get away, renew, and rejuvenate while getting educated on ways to better care for themselves,” Knosher said. There is no question yoga is hugely popular; the American Yoga Alliance estimates nearly one in three people participate in some way, with one in 10 regular yoga devotees. Hope said she believes there are two factors driving
Hope Knosher leading a yoga session for attendees during the National Conference for the Young Survival Coalition for Breast Cancer.
its success: first, Americans are in the midst of a health crisis, and second, yoga works. “We are seeing chronic illness on an epidemic scale, and we’ve lost the knowledge of how to care for our bodies and minds,” Knosher said. “[But] we are also beginning to understand the connection between our lifestyle and our health...and finding that yoga can help.” For someone looking to start yoga, Knosher said the key is to find the situation that is right for you. “There is a Zen saying ‘our path is where our feet are, so we might as well start there,’” she says. “So start where you are, not where you want to be.” Do research, ask for referrals, find experienced teachers or therapists, and then give it a try, she advised.
Knosher said she is in a good place, both physically and mentally, but she says the specter of cancer is never far away, despite years of being cancer-free. “It wouldn’t be truthful to say I don’t think about cancer...it is in the back of my mind,” she acknowledged. “[But] yoga has helped me let go of these thoughts and anxiety more quickly, and to remember to live in the moment.” In the end, Knosher realizes the irony that breast cancer ultimately led her to her life’s calling. “My journey has not been a straight line to where I am today. I now get to share something I am deeply passionate about with others,” she said. “And at the end of the day, my heart is full, and I now sleep well.” ■

Healing the emotional and physical effects of breast cancer
A Pilates class is held at TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, 8010 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs, every Wednesday morning from 8-9 a.m. under the instruction of Lauren Bober, MPT, PT, CES, a certified pilates instructor and expert in breast cancer rehabilitation. 10 | northsidewoman.com | october2017

or many survivors of breast cancer, the emotional and physical healing can linger long after the scars have faded away. “Most people, including physicians and surgeons, are often not aware of the devastating side effects of breast cancer treatment,” said Rebecca Cowens-Alvarado, executive director of TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation. Established in Johns Creek in the fall of 2003, TurningPoint was started by a breast cancer survivor who found herself in a void — long after the surgery, chemotherapy and radiation had ended. Jill Binkley was only 42, the mother of three young children, and a physical therapist with considerable medical knowledge. She knew emotional trauma would be present in recovery, but she found herself unprepared for the array of physical side effects, including fatigue, BINKLEY lymphedema and continuing pain which limited her daily activities. “Jill quickly learned she was not alone [and] was determined to make an impact and raise awareness about rehabilitation and exercise for women with breast cancer,” Cowens-Alvarado said. TurningPoint was launched soon after, with the goal to improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients and survivors by providing tailored, evidence-based rehabilitation and support. Services include physical therapy, counseling, exercise, nutrition, massage therapy and support groups. Although Binkley recently stepped down as the executive director of TurningPoint, she remains involved as a consultant to the organization she founded, ensuring the organization’s goals continue. “TurningPoint helps breast cancer patients and survivors manage the physical and emotional side effects of breast cancer and its treatment,” explained CowensAlvarado, who became executive director in May. “The staff helps women regain their range of motion, prevent and manage lymphedema and improve their overall wellbeing.” Since its beginning 16 years ago, the non-profit organization has served more than 3,500 patients and has grown beyond its initial focus on rehabilitation services. Services now include those directed to survivors, as well as the community, including education and awareness activities, provider education and research partnerships. Cowens-Alvarado points to an exciting new collaboration with Georgia Tech on a research project to better treat lymphedema, a condition that causes swelling
Lauren Bober, TurningPoint›s clinical director, demonstrates some techniques of weight training and how they can lead to strengthening for the shoulder and core (abdominal and trunk muscles).
in the limbs and is tied to the removal of lymph nodes. TurningPoint also works closely with Susan G. Komen and It’s the Journey in their goals to prevent, diagnose and treat breast cancer. About 30 patients are seen each day, and the TurningPoint clinic has quadrupled in size over the years to include additional facilities and services. In 2013, the organization moved from Johns Creek to Sandy Springs to better serve its expanding client base. While breast cancer is the common link among all the clients, services are tailored for where the client is in the recovery process. “Many of our patients have just had breast cancer surgery and/or reconstruction surgery, while others are further along in their journey, “ Cowens-Alvarado said. “Once those patients have completed their initial rehabilitation plan, many return to participate in our [other] programs.” Looking to the future, Cowens-Alvarado says exciting things are on the horizon as management looks to grow and expand its reach. TurningPoint is the only organization of its kind in the Southeast, and CowensAlvarado said the goal is to continue to lead by example. She notes TurningPoint works hard to end the misconception that women must live with the limitations that breast cancer leaves behind. “This is just not the case,” she said. “TurningPoint helps women regain their physical and emotional health so they can return to the things they love most.” For more information on TurningPoint contact https:// myturningpoint.org/ ■

Pink Is Not Just A Color
herstyle
It’s An Attitude By LORI WYNNE Style Contributor
T
he month of October is a great time to wear your pink items of any shade in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Not a fan of this ultra-feminine shade? Luckily for you, pink comes in a variety of shades from soft baby-girl pink to deep raspberry. This trendy tone can be paired with a variety of colors to help you feel your personal best while showing support.
Sleek and professional in pink:
Choose a deep raspberry and pair with black, charcoal, navy, or camel to celebrate the autumn season and give moral support to those who have fought the fight with breast cancer. A raspberry colored skirt with a grey blouse would look smashing with a pair of black and white animal print pumps. Match it with a jacket in autumn’s icon plaid that includes both raspberry and grey. You will look feminine and C-level exec at the same time.
Bohemian in pink:
Choose softer shades of pink like blush or champagne. These pair well with olive green, marsala, denim blue, ecru, taupe and other soft shades in the same tone. Boho is such a fun, whimsical style that encourages loose flowy shapes. Mix lace with gauzy fabrics, denim or velvet. This style is often seen at concerts and festivals. Are you brave enough to wear it to work, the movies or church? My friend Karen who is a big fan of boho says, “As long as you have a great hat to match it, wear it everywhere.”
Support your friends by wearing pink:
Whether you wear an official pink breast cancer awareness T-shirt, a pink ribbon or tutu in a run for the cure, make sure you include the attitude. Be proud you are supporting your friends and family. Wearing pink during October is letting everyone know you give your moral support to anyone who survived it, succumb or still fighting breast cancer. Wear any other shade of pink with any other item in your wardrobe. The trick is to pair with an item that has the same tone intensity. For example, hot pink pairs well with Kelly green or bright orange. Pair light pink with light grey or creamy white.
Men look great in pink:
Encourage the men in your life to don a pink tie, shirt, pocket square or all of the above. Nothing is more masculine than a man wearing pink who supports the women in his life who are battling breast cancer.
The history of wearing pink in October: According to Wikipedia, “In 1993 Evelyn Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of the Estée Lauder Companies, founded The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and established the pink ribbon as its symbol, though this was not the first time the ribbon was used to symbolize breast cancer: a 68-year-old California woman named Charlotte Haley, whose sister, daughter, and granddaughter had breast cancer, had distributed peach-color ribbons to call attention to what she perceived as inadequate funding for research. In the fall of 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation had handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors.” ■

ith the rise in cyber threats over the past few years, Cyberhub CEO Karin Zalcberg saw a void and began a program to educate and protect the public. That was when she was at her previous job where she led an aggressive sales team in financial services and worked with a diverse clientele of companies, including online gaming, biomedical, insurance and education. As they moved through the sales cycle for the clients, she began to see patterns of behavior. The most prevalent was the little amount of time spent on education in customer service and overall people management skills. “Leadership in the relationship-building arena was needed very badly, especially in the medical field,” Zalcberg said. “Many doctors do not have the best bedside manner, and ironically, it’s this human interaction that can make or break even the most talented physician’s reputation or their medical group.” She combined psychology, sales strategies, leadership and education, along with the digital interaction of commerce, and developed a strong understanding of virtual trade and human element. That drives what she does daily. It also helped her form Cyberhub. “My work ethic and problem-solving skill set, combined with my fascination for emerging technologies,

led me to create a platform that was ultimately designed to help people,” she said. “There is a great need for leadership in cybersecurity, a need for understanding of the motivation of the cyber-criminals. This is an emerging field with global ramifications. It’s important, always evolving and fascinating.” This year, she expanded her business to create the Cyberhub Summit on Nov. 8-9 at the Omni Atlanta Hotel at the CNN Center. “CyberHub Summit is, at its heart, a teaching and sharing platform for executives whose responsibilities lie outside of the information and data categories, but whose jobs are reliant on the information they provide,” Zalcberg said. “Understanding your business is critical to success.” She said she admires businesses like UPS that make their employees work on a truck delivering packages, no matter what they were hired for. “This experience is essential to the culture and success of the company,” Zalcberg said. “Today, corporate leadership skills must include knowledge, actionable knowledge, of technology, its data component and a rich understanding of the fluidity of the digital commerce border of the company. Any executive must be equipped with the knowledge of its companies’ infrastructure and that now includes technology and its applications.” She also encourages women to enter the cybersecurity industry because she thinks they’d thrive in the industry that’s a combination of criminology and technology, mixed with the intricacies of human behavior. And although she faced sexism, she said she never allowed it to determine her actions
or stop her. “When you really look at it, cybersecurity is an 2017 attempt at social engineering Cyberhub Summit with a goal at understanding Nov. 8-9 how online criminals are Omni Atlanta Hotel working and what their motivations are,” Zalcberg at CNN Center said. “I think women can do a brilliant job in this More information complicated industry. Tracing on tickets at cyberhubsummit.com hackers can take years, but I believe women, because of the intuitive way they think, can trace hackers better than men. Women are very good at analyzing behavior and always ask why. This is crucial to understanding the hacker.” To learn about the summit, visit cyberhubsummit.com. ■

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s (CRK) mission is to advocate and secure the protection and stewardship of the Chattahoochee River, including its lakes, tributaries and watershed, in order to restore and conserve their ecological health for the people and wildlife that depend on the river system. Established in 1994, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK) is an environmental advocacy organization with more than 7,200 members dedicated solely to protecting and restoring the Chattahoochee River Basin — drinking water source for nearly four million people. CRK was the 11th licensed program in the international Waterkeeper Alliance, now close to 250 organizations strong. From the north Georgia mountains to the Florida border, the Chattahoochee River is impacted by unplanned development, storm runoff and trash from industries, roads, and construction sites, and discharges from sewage treatment plants. Withdrawals from the river by municipalities and industries also affect its health through consumptive loss of water that is not returned to the river, impacting downstream water quality, recreation and ecology. While significant improvements have been made in the river, much remains to be accomplished. CRK actively uses advocacy, education, research, communication, cooperation, monitoring and legal actions to protect and preserve the Chattahoochee and its watershed.

et’s start with the Martyn House in Ellijay, Ga. (themartynhouse.com), which offers a luxurious adults-only glamping adventure. You may have heard of the Martyn House bed and breakfast, but owners Rick Lucas and JoAnn Antonelli took the B&B idea one step further when they added handmade sleeping tents from India. “The owners came across one of those tents while traveling,” explains caretaker Alejandro (Alex) Cruz, “and brought it home and built a platform for it.” At that time, glamping was “just becoming a thing,” Alex recalls. Eventually, three more of the Indian tents were added, bringing the current total to four. Each is 16 | northsidewoman.com | october2017

ooking for a glamping opportunity to enjoy with the entire family? Then check out the yurt-based glamping opportunities available at a number of Georgia’s state parks. “Glamping at a state park is a nice compromise if one person wants to go camping but the other wants a hotel,” says Kim Hatcher, Public Affairs coordinator for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division. “People really do seem to love it.” State-park glamping is built around what Kim calls “yurt villages.” A yurt is a tent-like canvas and wood structure which sits on a platform – and while it may look like a tent on the outside, it’s anything but once you walk through the door. Amenities at state park glamping sites typically include bunk beds (with a bottom bed that folds out into a full-sized mattress), a futon, furniture, fans, heaters, a pack porch, and a picnic table out front. The individual yurts are typically sited around a central bath house. Kids are welcome, but pets are not permitted in the yurts. You’ll need to bring your own linens (or sleeping bags) and pillows as well as a cooler. With several state park glamping possibilities nearby, it’s not hard to find one that’s right for you and your family. For example, Tugaloo State Park on Lake Hartwell is a great choice if you enjoy boating. The park has six yurts (including one that’s handicapped Inside a Yurt at Fo accessible), each rt Yargo StatePark . large enough for six
adults. Another good state park glamping possibility is Cloudland Canyon State Park in Rising Fawn, Ga., located on the western edge of Lookout Mountain in the extreme northwest corner of the state. This park features 10 yurts (one handicapped accessible) and is a favorite with those who like to hike, with thousand-foot-deep canyons, waterfalls, cascading creeks and abundant wildlife. The list of state parks offering yurt-based glamping also includes Fort Yargo State Park (Winder) with six yurts, Red Top Mountain State Park (Acworth) with one handicapped accessible yurt, Sweetwater Creek State Park (Lithia Springs) with 10 yurts (one handicapped accessible), and (south of Atlanta) High Falls State Park (with six yurts). O
nce upon a time, when I was young and foolish, my new bride and I went camping. Now I must tell you that the love of my life is not at heart an outdoor sort but I suppose out of sheer adoration for me, her new husband, she decided to try the camping thing anyway. It did not go well. First there was the rainstorm, which happened to coincide with the putting up of the tent. Then there were the bugs … and the rain…and the sand… and – oh, enough of that. You get the idea. What we should have done was go “glamping” instead. Glamping is short for “glamorous camping.” According to one glamping industry website it’s “where stunning nature meets modern luxury.” You’re in a tent of some sort, but that’s where the resemblance to ordinary camping ends. Don’t let the word “tent” mislead you. A glamping tent is like a regular tent squared or cubed. It will be furnished (with real furniture!) and may also have amenities such as water, power, heaters, fans, sofas, chairs and so on – in other words, all the comforts of home. They just happen to be housed in a tent. Put it that way and camping really starts to sound pretty good…even to a non-camper. But luxurious or not, glamping is still spending the night in a tent in the woods – and that’s a large part of the reason for its appeal. It really does let you have it all. It’s wilderness and civilization all rolled into one. North Georgia offers a number of different glamping opportunities. We don’t have nearly enough space to look at them all, but to give you an idea of what it’s like, here’s a look at two different takes on the glamping experience.

ocal artist C.J. Bognar has a simple yet inspiring goal: to make people smile. Using her artistic talents, Bognar spreads this message through her charming and unique Little Sidekicks. “In a world is so full of turmoil, I try to bring a little whimsy through my Little Sidekicks,” Bognar said. Each of the Little Sidekicks are carefully handcrafted miniature figurines of people made out of jewelry. They can range anywhere from historical figures and pop culture icons to mythical beings and ordinary folk. Small and lightweight, they are designed to be carried around as a necklace, earrings or charm. They can always be personalized. “It’s a funny story how Little Sidekicks came about,” Bognar said. “[It] started when I made a tiny, beaded bunny for my sister’s Easter basket… They got such a great response I decided to make some tiny jewelry people to join my handcrafted jewelry line, and that is how Little Sidekicks were born.” She began selling the Little Sidekicks in her boutique, CJ’s Talk of the Town, which she has since closed. But her works can still be found and bought online and at various local art festivals. “With my Little Sidekicks, my ideas are boundless,” Bognar said. “You’re sure to find one depicting your passion. Look at the details and try to figure out what they represent.” Bognar, a jewelry designer and painter, is a self-taught artist who first leapt into the art scene when she became an advocate for endangered species. The plight of the elephants and the ivory trade especially captured her attention. Her first pieces were

Each donation receives a greeting card with one of Bognar’s elephant paintings. Additionally, through Dec. 31, 10 percent of the proceeds from any of her artwork sales will be donated. She has since expanded to the world of jewelry making and hasn’t looked back. “Designing and creating unique jewelry is part of my artistic journey,” Bognar said. “There is no better feeling for an artist as when their creativity is flowing.” To learn about Bognar, her works and helping conserve elephants, visit littlesidekicks.com. ■

Ghosts and other mysteries haunt North Georgia By CANDY WAYLOCK

W
hether you are a believer or a skeptic in the world of the paranormal, October has a way of putting us in the mood for a good scare. And apparently Georgia has its fair share of things that go bump and “boo” in the night; in fact many of them lurk a bit closer than you think. Retired educator and author Jim Miles of Warner Robins has had a fascination with paranormal sightings in Georgia since he was a teenager. About 10 years ago he began organizing all of the information he gathered over the years and crisscrossed the state to document events and ghost stories. The end result were seven books about the paranormal in Georgia; five were featured by The History Book Club. Miles' goal was to detail paranormal events in each of Georgia’s 159 counties (plus the two that no longer exist) and found more than enough stories to fill the pages.
HAUNTED NORTH GEORGIA
Published by Haunted America; Division of The History Press Just in time for Halloween, “Haunted North Georgia” was released this month focusing on the “most terrifying ghost stories” from the 52 counties that stretch across the top third of the state. Contained within the 151-page book are stories of ghosts who have taken up permanent residence in antebellum homes, restaurants and even an outhouse! Miles provides more than just interviews from the haunted; he also provides insight into the possible identity of the spirits and why they linger. In Forsyth County, the Cumming Playhouse is the featured “haunt” where ghost activity has been reported for years. Ten years ago, a ghost hunting team investigated the building and picked up the presence of a ghost who met his human end at the end of rope. The building was originally a school in Cumming, and it is thought the ghost may be a teacher caught in an illicit love affair that led to his demise. But the teacher is not the only one who roams the hall. Other “spirits” have been reported, including a sailor, and two children, all of whom fall into the friendly category of haunts. In Alpharetta, the city’s only remaining pre-Civil War building also contains the most active haunting. The Skelton-Teasley House on Roswell Street in downtown Alpharetta hails from 1856 and appears actively haunted. Owners have long cited footsteps, slamming doors, moving objects and loud sounds, even forcing one family from the home back in the 1990s. Miles said the spirits may be the four children of the Skelton family who died in the house.
MYSTERIES OF GEORGIA’S MILITARY BASES Schiffer Publishing Ltd.
20 | northsidewoman.com | october2017
Unlike its companion book, “Haunted North Georgia,” the paranormal activity detailed in this book are off limits to ghost hunters. A strong warning on the book’s cover warns the curious visitor that these sites are security zones where “drop-ins” are highly discouraged. This book delves beyond the garden variety ghost, to also include UFO sightings, reports of alien visitors, and even numerous sightings of “Bigfoot.” Georgia has some of the most prominent military bases in the country, and Miles focuses on 13 of these bases including Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Fort Gillem and Fort McPherson, all near Atlanta. The ghost stories focus primarily on interviews with witnesses who either saw or heard paranormal activity, as either civilians, military personnel or their families. The stories are a wide range of experiences, from friendly ghosts who lived in harmony with the residents, as well as those who eventually drove them out of their homes. Miles notes that military bases are naturally haunted because of the association with conflict, anguish, injuries and death. Some military personnel leave the base, never to return, leaving their survivors behind to mourn. “Perhaps the souls of those who died [return] seeking loved ones or the last place they knew peace,” he writes. ■

candy@northsidewoman.com Northside Man: Jimmy Fred Tester, Jr.; owner/operator of Mammoth Detail Salons in Alpharetta City of residence: Roswell (since 1994) Hometown: Gray, Tennessee High School/College: Daniel Boone High, Tenn., Art Institute of Atlanta Family: Wife, Susi Albisu; son, Dakota (20), and daughter, Addison (17) Community Connections: Member of the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce; founded the Mammoth’s “Tusk Run 5k” benefiting HDSA; consistently honored as “Best Car Wash” by Appen Media Group readers.
What drew you to the North Fulton area to live and work?
My wife and I bought our first home in the North Fulton area in the mid ’90s and started a family a few years later. We were drawn to the sense of community, great schools and parks. When it came to opening a business, I’ve had the entrepreneur spirit my entire life so I looked for something of my own. I always enjoyed taking care of my own vehicles and decided to share my passion for a really clean car with others. So when the opportunity to renovate a small gas station
on Alpharetta Highway became available, I knew the time was right. Now, 20 years and two car washes later, I know the decision was the right one.
You’ve since grown to a second location. To what do you attribute your success? The philosophy of treating customers the way I would want to be treated is truly the cornerstone of our business. We always do our best to make everything right. A happy customer always returns. My employees are a huge part of the success of our company. Over the years we’ve created a culture of doing the right thing, so no cutting corners. Our work ethic has paid off and we now have a second, larger car wash right down the street. Because each car wash is on a separate main road the car washes actually complement each other. We even created an app so you can see the wait times at each place!
Downtown Alpharetta has changed a lot in 20 years. What are your thoughts on the changes?
The impact made by the city of Alpharetta in designing a work, shop and play community has been incredible. There is a noticeable difference in development across the board. Alpharetta is an amazing place to live, but it is also an amazing place to visit for shopping, entertainment,

want to help them succeed by supporting local schools, special organizations and sports teams. And, on a personal level, we frequently support other local businesses, restaurants and retail stores in the area. It’s really nice to have great business neighbors and friends after so many years.
How important is being part of the community to you and your business?
In your free time, where will we most likely find you?

K
raig Torres is on a mission to expand the taste buds of the average beer drinker beyond the horizons of Clydesdales and blue mountains. The owner (and chief hophead) of Barleygarden Kitchen and Craft Bar in Avalon says he has a penchant for old-school Belgian and German beer, which he feels has fallen along the wayside with the trend toward “extreme” flavors. “I really wanted to showcase these styles in a setting reminiscent of a Munich beer hall,” Torres said, describing the venue’s two-story building with an intimate rooftop bar in the newest section of Avalon. Downstairs, 61 beers are on tap, about a third of them hailing from the local brewing community. “I wanted to give Avalon a taste of what we do well at our other locations... constantly rotating fun, new and unique beers with a heavy dose of local choices,” he noted. “We really are looking for new releases...many of which are not available for tasting before we get the keg.” Upstairs on the rooftop bar, an additional 20+ beers await the customer, with an emphasis on selections Torres considers among the top tier of small-batch, hand-crafted beers. “For the roof, we rotate only on occasion, so I am looking for European beers that represent the best in class of a specific beer style,” he explained. “So hefeweizens like Weihenstephan and Quads like Gouden Carolus are easy choices. If you want to find the best of Germany, England, Belgium, this will be your Barleygarden experience.” Barleygarden is a part of the Hop City family, with locations in downtown Atlanta and Midtown, and Birmingham, Ala. “We’ve been around nearly nine years and we have a great team of beer and wine geeks that keep it ticking,” said Torres, a beer tasting professional with over 8,000 beer ratings. Opening in Avalon presented a unique opportunity for Torres. This was the first new construction for a Hop City brand, and the first suburban setting (compared to the TORRES “urban-reclaimed” vibe of the other sites). But the suburbs were calling...so Torres answered. “For years I’ve been asked to open a place in the northern suburbs but never really found a spot that made sense. Avalon is that spot,” he noted. “Plus, as a rule of thumb, I always like being neighbors with Ford Fry (El Felix). That guy seems to know what he’s doing!” As the team explored the possibilities of a Hop City location in Avalon, they ran into one roadblock. “It turns out the City of Alpharetta frowns on bars...they are simply not allowed,” Kraig laughed. The workaround was to partner with Kevin Ouzts from Spotted Trotter, who got busy planning a menu that complimented the beer – the key to Hop City’s identity. The name was also changed to Barleygarden to reflect the new concept. “We really wanted house-made, fresh, but easy-to-understand foods,” Torres said. “Things that fit in your hand...or in a bowl. And most importantly, I wanted foods that pair great with beer!” The challenge was developing a relatively permanent menu that could pair with a constantly changing beer selection. Torres said he’s accomplished that, with an expansive menu that offers something for

everyone, from the hearty eater to the green crowd. “Our best-seller is the Butcher’s Bun – a high-end cheesesteak, but the ribeye is thick-sliced, not shredded. It’s served on locally-baked bread and smothered in house-fried onions and cheese. Now picture that with rich, Whopper-malty weizenbock like Aventinus!” said Torres. Other popular items include the Big New York (pastrami, gruyere, beer pickled cabbage), the Hen House (marinated chicken breast, goat cheese, bacon), a variety of salads, and “the best hot dog you’ll ever eat,” as promised on the menu. A limited kid’s menu is also available. But seriously, great food aside, all eyes are on the beers. While navigating the extensive selection may be daunting, Torres said the staff is there to help. “With 85 draft choices it can get a little overwhelming,” he acknowledges. “But we have always been committed to a welcoming atmosphere for guests at any point in their beer journey. We cater to guests with lots of beer knowledge [and those] just getting to know the choices.” The staff goes through a “reasonable” amount of training on beers, but Torres would rather focus on customer service than encyclopedic knowledge. “Frankly – we are more interested in finding team members that understand we aren’t in the beer business – we are in the ‘making folks happy’ business,” he said. And if making folks happy on a Saturday afternoon involves SEC football, then Torres may have to make a change to the website that says “no big screens.” “I may have to walk that [statement] back a bit,” he said, laughing. “I love a great football game as much as the next guy but I’ve always enjoyed the English pub experience [with emphasis on conversation]." But in the context of the customer is always right, Torres said they are making an exception to the “no TV” rule at Barleygarden. “Here at Avalon, our guests have made it clear that, for the majority of them, the magnetic pull between sports and beer is too much to overcome,” Torres admitted. He says the last 10 years have been an adventure, with a new location opening every two years. Looking to the future, he hopes to continue that path, whether it’s with the tried and true, or something entirely new. “My wife Eileen and I love Atlanta, and my rule of thumb has been to only open where I can make it there and back in the same day. Luckily, with all of metro Atlanta’s growth, that door is wide open,” Torres said. ■
You will find 61 rotating North American craft choices at the downstairs bar and upstairs you will find Europe's finest choices highlighting Belgian and German selections.

Who are you?
A comparison of three DNA sites By SUZANNE PACEY
Suzanne@northsidewoman.com
I
always knew my ancestral background was mostly French and Irish, but my skin tone looks more Italian or American Indian. To get definitive answers to my genetic pool, I decided to investigate how I could find out my exact heritage. As I found out quickly, there are several different DNA sites available, along with a wide range of prices and features. So how do you know the right one to use? Which ones are authentic, and which are less credible? I found the DNA process starts around $99 and goes up to more than $300 from some companies. A pretty wide range, which makes it hard to figure out which one is really the best based on cost alone. I decided to narrow it down to three services: Ancestry $99 GPS Origins (now HomeDNA) $199 Living DNA $159

WHAT ARE GENES?
A gene is a distinct sequence of DNA that determines what characteristics every living creature has. Genes, inherited from both parents, are found on the chromosomes. Every person has two copies of each gene, one inherited from each parent. Humans share most of the same genes, but a small number of genes vary slightly from person to person. It is these variations that give each person unique physical features and tendencies. Your genes determine everything about you: eye, hair, and skin color; tendency to gain weight; athleticism and other unique characteristics.
HOW IS GENETIC INFORMATION INHERITED?
Humans inherit 23 chromosomes from each of their parents, for a total of 46 chromosomes. Forty-four of these chromosomes are identical in men and women; the remaining two determine if we are male or female (the X and the Y chromosomes). The genetic information we inherit is never exactly the same as that of our parents. During reproduction, the chromosomes are recombined, which produces new combinations of genes. These gene combinations give us similarities to our mother and our father, but are a new mosaic that makes us unique.

Time for results: 6-8 weeks Ancestry has an enormous and diverse database, and also offers free features. Even if you’re a beginner genealogist, some of the features, such as easy document viewing and the professional research assistance are very user friendly. DNA was collected via saliva sample, by spitting into a tube until your saliva reaches a certain amount. Place the sample in the storage bag and place the bag in the pre-paid mailing box included with the kit and drop in in the mail. The results of your DNA test are stored in a secured database My results came back as: • 56% Ireland • 31% Great Britain • 13% Other regions • 1% Native American Primarily located in: North America, Central America, South America, and within the Genetic Communities French Settlers along the St. Lawrence as early at the 1700. This DNA site seemed to be the most accurate from what I experienced, and it was easy to understand.
GPS ORIGINS
Time for results: 8-10 weeks The GPS Origins report is split into two parts. In the first section you are provided with your gene pool percentages. The second part of the test provides two migration stories for each customer. GPS Origins’ test relies upon genetic uniqueness created by the mixing of global gene pools in different proportions. GPS Origins’ test uses 36 gene pools to trace the origin of your DNA, more than twice the number being used by other methods. Cheek swabs were used for DNA collection and sent in a Postage-paid envelope to a (U.S. customers only) highly accredited lab with privacy-protected service and expert staff; your DNA is not sent to a third-party lab. I was sorely disappointed. This one, I felt, was way off and the results were confusing to understand. I do however like the migration map that comes with your results. My results came back as: • 20.8% Fennoscandia (The area known as Fennoscandia encompasses the countries of Norway, Sweden, Finland and a part of Russia known as the Kola Peninsula) • 15.7% Southern France (Southern France was a major crossroads of Europe with multiple waves of human migration.) • 15.1% Orkney Islands (The Orkney Islands are a small group of islands that lie off the north coast of Scotland) Weren’t we all from these places at one point or another…
funny part is no Irish, and I know I have some Irish heritage based on my immediate relatives.
LIVING DNA
Time for results: 10 to 12 weeks Living DNA does not compare your DNA with anyone else they test. They do compare DNA to a database of famous DNA groups and will flag you if your DNA matches up with any of these “famous” DNA. You do have full access to your raw data and can transfer it to another company that could make those match ups. Most DNA testing goes back four to five generations; Living DNA goes back throughout human history. What it does give you is a very detailed region-specific look at your ancestry throughout human history. Living DNA offers one of the most in-depth DNA tests on the market. The family ancestry test (autosomal DNA) looks at all your ancestors both in recent times (approximately 10 generations) as well as allowing you to look at your ancestry at different points in history until we all share common ancestors together. My DNA sample was collected with an easy-to-use mouth swab. After collecting a DNA sample, you drop it in the mail using a free return bag. The basic results of your DNA test, being your genetic data, which is referred to as “raw data,” is stored electronically on a secure and encrypted computer system. My results came back as: • 81% Great Britain and Ireland • 15.7 Europe (south) • 3.3% Europe (north and west) My results seemed a little broad. But after digging into the site I found the mapping and Motherline Migration Map interesting and informative.
SUMMARY Choosing the right DNA testing company comes down to several factors, including your own goals in getting tested and what you already know about your ancestry. For example, if you are fairly certain your ancestry has roots among British populations, then Living DNA can pinpoint the specific regions of Britain. However, if you are relatively certain you don’t have much British ancestry, Ancestry might be a better option. GPS Origins went far back in history – great for a genealogist, but maybe more than the general population requires. ■

Dental care is more than just cleaning teeth

he health of our pet’s teeth is just as important as keeping our own teeth healthy. Tartar buildup and periodontal disease can lead to heart disease, liver disease and other potentially life-threatening conditions — all of which can be avoided with good and regular dental hygiene. Daily brushing is the gold standard preventive care recommended for our pets. For dogs and cats, brushing their teeth daily is beneficial, and can start when they are young. Puppies and kittens can be trained to accept brushing. Start with a finger tooth brush, which makes the move to a bristle brush easier. Positive reinforcement is helpful, so give your pet a healthy treat before brushing teeth. A fluoride-free, pet-safe tooth paste can be purchased from your veterinarian. We recommend C.E.T (clean every tooth) toothpaste, which comes in different flavors, including poultry, beef, peppermint and malt. Daily teeth brushing is good preventive care, but so are yearly dental cleanings. Some breeds are more prone to developing tartar buildup and periodontal disease than others.
Having annual examinations allows your veterinarian to assess your pet’s dental health. Pet dental cleanings are performed using the same dental equipment as used for humans. The main difference is pets’ dentals are performed under anesthesia. Having the patient under anesthesia allows us to carefully assess each tooth and perform a thorough dental cleaning. Additional steps to help prevent tartar buildup include feeding dry food and offering tartar control treats. For more information regarding your pet’s dental needs and care, contact your veterinarian. ■

Helicopter Parenting By KAY PASCHAL
Peachtree Park Prep Owner
I
n the national news recently, parenting skills came under-fire when a college student sued her parents for stalking. A carton illustrated this news story by showing a set of parents with helicopter wings “hovering” over a child. The term “Helicopter parenting” now part of our nation’s vernacular. Through the years I have attended many seminars on the changing scope of the parent-child relationship. As the term self-esteem was heralded as the sustaining philosophy that children should be constantly immersed in, parents had to step in and make sure that their child’s self-esteem was never threatened. This takes more and more effort from parents as children go from preschool play yards and classrooms to the competitive levels of school through the college years, travel-level sports, and all other extra-
curricular activities that children compete in. Parents find themselves financially, emotionally, and socially engaged in their child’s life, the life of their child’s friends, and the institution or activity that their child enjoys or in some cases have been micro-managed or pushed into doing. There is also the very real threat these days of internet connections and other social media sites that attracts children and young adults that cause some parents to be “ever-present” in the life of their child. So really how much parenting, supervision, and attention is too much? Is it a case of the “reverse umbilical cord” for some parents or is it necessary to be construed as an “over-protective” or “helicopter parent” to insure the safety and well-being of your child? Quality versus Quantity, Helicopter versus Uninvolved, or that (dare I say) perfect balance. As parents in today’s world we have a lot to consider and decide on what is the healthy balance for ourselves and for our children for just how high or low to “keep the helicopter”. ■

Interiors
orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on designing for the Life Styles of today.
Home Décor Interior Design & Social Media … New Best Friends!
I
s everyone as amazed as I am with the utter speed and pace of our lives and lifestyles today…particularly, with the advent of advances in mobile technology and the rise of Social Media. Having been an integral part of the Home Décor and Interior Design Industry in greater Atlanta, since 2004, Tuscany Fine Furnishings has always road on top of that wave. Ironically, I personally received my first iPhone as a gift in 2007, the same year of the Apple release, from one of our furniture suppliers, Lexington. During the next ten years, technology gains ushered in a cavalcade of smart phones and tablets along with successful social media communications platforms like Facebook, Google Business, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. In turn, Tuscany began to develop its website and our social media marketing strategy. The key to our success began with our use of, “Professionally Staged Individual
Showroom Vignettes” , expertly filmed, edited and produced HD videos along with still photography integrated into platforms like, YouTube. Tuscany then incorporated and deployed each visual posting across Tuscany’s social media website, e-newsletters, designer pubs, Facebook and Google. Customers can request dimensions and pricing of any piece visible, in any photo or video frame without ever leaving their home or mobile device. Literally, opening the door to our entire collection of thousands of pieces that are sold and delivered in concert with new arrivals being re-staged, presented and now posted twice monthly. Tuscany’s vision of the future finds great opportunity within social media marketing to expand our customer design services visibility and talent, including custom floor planning, showroom custom staging and even real-time transactional showroom sales via Facebook! ■

Minimally invasive surgical options in gynecologic medicine
T
he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim and Dr. Stacey Pereira of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day convenient in-office procedures that require no downtime and can be done in the office. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fast-growing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

HALT Stress Management I
t’s a given. We all have stress. Somedays we are pretty good at managing it. Other days we are not. Whether we damage ourselves or those around us, whether the damage is immediate or sneaky & slow, the clincher is identifying that you are stressed out before you act crazy. Here is a quick and easy acronym to help you see the yellow flag before it becomes red: HALT. Hungry. Angry. Lonely. Tired. Hungry: Oh yes, we all know this one and can spot it in friends who are normally nice but just blew their top over something small or manageable. If you are hungry, do not make important decisions or quick assessments until you’ve eaten something. Angry: Yep, let’s check that one on the list too. Did you know that when you are angry, it is biologically difficult for your brain to process rational thought? It’s as if those nerves bypass the many filters we have and have a short cut to regretful words and actions. Lonely: This one is surprisingly common. If your life feels like a hurricane, then you are probably lonely sitting in the eye. It seems calm, but you feel empty. It’s difficult to make decisions at this point because your perspective becomes warped. Go to the park and walk around. Say hi to everyone you meet. Smile at the children. Then make your decisions. Tired: Zzzzzzz, good morning Sunshine! Did you not get enough sleep last night? Our brains needs sleep to process our thoughts and activities of the day. Without sleep, the information in your head is like a computer in need of defragment. Islands of information are just floating around with no logic to tie them all together. The next time you are stressed. Recognize HALT conditions and refrain from decisions and comments. Try it once. Then go and give yourself a reward - something you don’t normally allow yourself. Then try HALT again, and again. ■

hat if you or an older adult in your life could slow or even reverse the decline typically associated with aging? Residents at Atria Senior Living’s five Atlanta-area communities are doing just that through Better This Year, Atria’s forward-thinking approach to greater well-being. According to research conducted by Dr. Henry Lodge, coauthor of The New York Times bestseller Younger Next Year: The New Science of Aging, a surprising 70 percent of how successfully we age is determined by four key lifestyle choices. Exercise – Exercise triggers the body’s natural repair processes and the benefits are dramatic. Connection – People who are part of a caring community live longer than those who are isolated and lonely. Nutrition – Having consistent access to nourishing, appetizing food is important to staying healthy longer. Goals – Setting short- and long-term goals to challenge oneself promotes a sense of purpose. Rejuvenate yourself before the holidays with our cosmetic services - JUST FOR YOU! By DR. USHMA PATEL AND Dr. BRITTANY CORBETT, D.D.S Center for Advanced Dentistry
T
he holidays are typically a time of the year that fill up our social calendar with work parties and school programs and festivities with our families. We interact socially with more people during the holidays than any other time of the year. It can be exhausting and for some downright stressful. Here are some options that we offer that will get you looking and feeling better before the holidays approach! Botox, used for TMJ pain and cosmetic purposes, is a safe, effective, and relatively painless way to improve your mood, self-esteem and image in the mirror. By feeling better about yourself, all social interactions are easier and more rewarding. With the holidays being the most social time of the year, whether we like it or not, Holiday BOTOX® is absolutely a must for cosmetic reasons! Or, are you noticing more lines and wrinkles developing around your eyes, nose, or mouth? If your skin is starting to lose elasticity and you are coming out of the long summer with some premature signs of aging, schedule an appointment with Dr. Patel to learn more about the benefits of facial fillers. Radiesse is one of the longer-lasting facial fillers for smoothing out lines, wrinkles, and deeper folds around the nose and mouth. Another cosmetic procedure you may want to consider is our In-Office Zoom! Whitening! Many of the over-the-counter “whitening” solutions are only moderately effective. They may clear away surface level stains for a while, but they do not truly get to the root of
the problem, and they will not whiten your teeth to the highest degree possible. Professional teeth whitening is different. It can reverse the effects of many years’ worth of stains and get your teeth looking bright and white, just like you want them to! Whether your teeth are crooked, stained, chipped, or otherwise damaged, PATEL you may want to consider getting dental veneers. Dental veneers can be done in very little time and can completely transform your smile. By reshaping your existing teeth, porcelain veneers- in the shape, size, and color that you desirewill be professionally adhered onto your natural teeth to give you a smile that you have always wanted. Ever smiled or noticed yourself in the mirror and seen a flash of silver in CORBETT your teeth? Amalgam replacement may be an option for you this holiday season. These days, thankfully, we have new composite filling materials that are white and strong. The materials are advanced and allow for incredible blending and matching of the filling material with your natural tooth structure. No more silver- just an all-white smile! All these procedures are safe, effective and relatively painless way to make the holiday season more jolly and bright. For those who desire to look and feel rejuvenated this holiday season and want to find out if Botox, Filler, and Whitening is a good option for you, please call 770-884-
6623 and visit our website: www.HiTechSmiles.com. P.S- The end of the year is fast approaching. Use your dental benefits before they expire December 31st- If you don’t use them, you lose them! Call now to schedule your appointment while we have appointments available at your convenience! ■

o many of our senior care phone calls come from stressed out, burned out family caregivers. Their stories all have the same familiar details including years of giving personalized one-on-one care, sleepless nights, injuries of their own and complete frustration and exhaustion. The most important element of all runs through each family’s story, the sense of duty and obligation to the ones they love. “I know I can’t keep doing this, but I’m ok right now”. “I promised her I would never put her into an institution”. “No one can care for my mother like I can”. Here are some startling statistics about caregivers in America today: • *There are 65 million caregivers providing 20 hours or more of unpaid care a week • Of these family caregivers, 60% work outside of the home • 70% suffer from depression • Women make up 66% of the caregivers and 64% of those live with the loved one • An estimated 30-40% of caregivers die before the ones they are caring for do • National Alliance for Caregiving in collaboration with AARP; November 2009 When we receive these calls, our goal
is to come along side the family in need and help put resources in place to begin to relieve the heavy burden. Our goal is get the professionals in place either through home care services, HENTSCHEL adult day programs, or placement in assisted living to take over the physical care giving. Only then can that family caregiver return to caring for themselves and being the family member they were meant to be. We finally see the family restored and everyone back in their proper roles. I often tell families, “Caring for your loved one 24 hours/day, 7 days/week is a task we simply weren’t designed to perform. It’s like asking yourself to fly like a bird. It sounds like a lovely endeavor until you step off the limb”. Once the care is in place, we connect our families to the many and wonderful support groups in Gwinnett County. It helps to talk with others that have walked in your shoes and have gone before you. Amy Hentschel is a senior care consultant and owner at Senior Provisions, LLC. For more information visit www. What is Microneedling, and is it right for me? By DR. BRENT TAYLOR Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery
I
t’s tough not to cringe when you first think about microneedling: the idea of introducing tiny needles into your skin does not sound desirable at first blush. However, microneedling is an established and respected method for improving scars and rejuvenating skin. Treatment is usually easy to tolerate and is one of the few effective methods for treating facial scars, lax skin, and fine lines and wrinkles. Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that involves creating controlled micro-injuries to the epidermis and dermis. The needles are usually regularly spaced and mounted on either a roller or on a stamping device that resembles an electronic toothbrush. Microneedling is most often used on the face, neck, chest, and hands or for stretch marks elsewhere on the body. These injuries trigger skin’s repair process and collagen production. By creating superficial injuries on the skin, the skin reacts by speeding up collagen production to repair the skin. Most medical-grade microneedling devices have the ability to change the depth of the needles, thus allowing for customized treatments according to one’s individual needs. The scientific basis for microneedling is a principle that is quite remarkable. Researchers discovered that large injuries to the skin result in scarring, just as expected. Interestingly, small enough injuries can heal seamlessly, without a scar. But, most surprisingly, very small injuries to skin that already has scars or laxity can gradually replace scars or laxity with normal skin. A rule of thumb is that no more than 5% of a scar or a zone’s treatment area can be injured with each treatment – otherwise, the injuries will merge and act more like a single large injury than
numerous small injuries. Repetitively piercing less than 5% of the skin with spaced tiny injuries once every four to eight weeks gradually replaces a treatment area with more aesthetically and functionally healthy skin. At their most dramatic, the principles of microinjury are used to treat burn victims and injured military TAYLOR heroes and gradually replace large, contracted and restrictive scars with softer, pliable and more comfortable scars that allowed increasingly free range of motion. This application requires large, expensive lasers and is often performed at a referral hospital. For patients with acne scars or seeking firmer skin, the same principles apply, but large expensive lasers are rarely necessary. This is microneedling’s niche. First, a microneedling assessment beings with evaluation of a client’s skin during which patient goals are discussed. If microneedling is chosen, a treatment plan is crafted. The depth of the treatment will vary over different facial structures such as the forehead vs cheeks. Deep, pitted acne scars require a greater treatment depth than skin being treated to achieve a youthful appearance. Microneedling can be safely performed on all facial structures including around the eyes or lips as long as the practitioner adjusts needle depths ad treatment technique appropriately. Many patients that look into microneedling are concerned about the possible pain during a session. For the most part, microneedling may be uncomfortable but it should always be tolerable. Patients need not worry: generally a prescription strength topical numbing cream is applied and allowed to sit on the area to be treated for at least 15 minutes. During treatments a patient may feel a light prickly sensation, but it is rare that a patient rates
this sensation as “pain.” Furthermore, recovery time for microneedling is usually minimal. Patients may feel a sensation similar to a light sunburn post treatment for 24 hrs. In general, microneedling is a procedure that needs to be performed multiple times in order to achieve desired results. After treatment, it can take up to six weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen, and the healing process can continue over several months. Treatments are best repeated 4-8 weeks apart. Deeper scaring will require more procedures than the number required to plump and rejuvenate skin. As with all procedures, microneedling carries some risks and side-effects, so be sure to discuss these with your board certified dermatologist. Seek out someone qualified and who you trust will guide you to the procedure that is right for you and your goals. Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta offers medical-grade microneedling in addition to a broad array of surgical, medical and cosmetic services, all performed by board certified dermatologist and fellowship trained Mohs surgeon Dr. Brent Taylor. ■

Jordan Orthodontics Thanks You! By DR. JEFFREY JORDAN Jordan Orthodontics
W
ow! We just started our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of this community! My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives! Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years. We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last four years! You don’t win many awards after high school, so it is a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 21,000
new patients over the years, so we have a little head start. Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic JORDAN problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. We can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options. Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation. No thank you list would be complete without thanking my mom and dad who helped me start my practice. Also, a large shout out to my office manager, Laurie Stinger, who has been on board from day one. Orthodontics is a team effort and at Jordan Orthodontics we have been blessed with great patients and a great team over the years! Thanks again!!! ■
