CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE
Sorry to be ungrateful …
W
ell some people will think I’m crazy, but I’m a not afraid to admit: I’m not a big fan of Thanksgiving, never have been. The endless day of cooking and cleaning for a meal that lasts about 30 minutes does not get me all excited. Plus, half the items cooked (mostly vegetables) I don’t even like! One year, we decided to visit family in Florida. All I wanted to do was sit at the beach. But I spent most of the vacation either at the grocery story, cooking or cleaning…not at the beach. Instead of perspiring in the hot sun, I was sweating in a hot kitchen! The next year I had family come to my house (small group of 20). Five of them were an hour and half late for dinner and left in the middle of dinner to hit the Black Friday sales, only to return with Tupperware to put leftovers in after I had already cleaned up and put everything
NOW THROUGH DECEMBER!
SUZANNE PACEY, PUBLISHER away. Then they requested I serve them dessert! Another year, I thought it would be great to go to the mountains and stay at a resort that has one of those giant Thanksgiving buffets. Well that was a bust. The food was awful, way too many different smells in one room and way too many people. No idea what I’ll do this year for the holiday. My newly married (Nov 3rd) daughter wants me to come to her house in Virginia and cook her turkey for her… not sure that’s in the plan. No offense to her. She has a really cute house, but her oven just doesn’t really work like mine. I do love leftover turkey sandwiches, though. Those are the best! ■

K9s for Law provides dogs to agencies nationwide
Corporal Beth Roberts and K9 Dane and Officer Mark Tappan and K9 Mattis.
On average, a K9 officer can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000, a prohibitive expense for many agencies. The return on investment is significant, Lee said, because the dogs can serve the community for usually eight more years. Since it opened just five months ago, the nonprofit has received 50 applications from around the United States requesting a grant for a K9 at their local agency. The process includes an advisory council to review applications. Then money is raised by K9s for Law. All the while, the canines take a six- to eight-week long dog training class with handlers, paid for by the nonprofit. The organization has raised enough money since opening for its first K9, which will go to an agency within
the next few weeks. The only cost to a department is paying for their transportation. “I got an application from California and called her,” Lee said. “She said, ‘this will be our first K9 dog and we’re desperate. I can fundraise for a plane ticket, but I can’t raise enough money for a dog.’” While the response has been good, it’s still a testament to how many departments are lacking the services a trained canine brings to the job. “They realize how valuable the canine is for the community,” Lee said. “One grant will impact the town from the old and young to the businesses. Everyone will be positively impacted for the next six to eight years.” Local officers have reached out and supported Lee
and the nonprofit. She said an officer told her he’d do anything to help her because the local community is fortunate to have the tools they need. “Here we have enough in our budgets to have K9s,” Lee said. “The community can support it, and there’s support behind it. But there are a lot of towns that aren’t as fortunate and don’t have the funding for it.” Lee said she hopes the nonprofit will be a way to pay it forward to other communities. “It really does work and keeps everyone safe,” Lee said. “We’re able to give people the opportunity to use this tool.” To learn more about K9s for Law, visit k9sforlaw.org. ■

ccording to a 2017 study of Georgia law enforcement agencies, 80 percent of the departments do not have an established K9 unit. K9 officers are crucial in helping police in explosive detection, suspect apprehension and narcotic detection, often with more reliability results than their two legged partner. That’s according to the Johns Creek nonprofit K9s for Law, which went public in May. The organization raises money for law enforcement agencies to acquire a K9 officer. Sydney Lee founded the group after learning of that statistic and realizing the public doesn’t know what K9s do for the agencies. “These departments either want to add more dogs or start their first unit,” Lee said. 8 | northsidewoman.com | november2017

A work space for women Circle and Moon promotes collaboration and cooperation By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
A
t work one morning in her local coffee shop “office,” Heni Kovács looked around at the other working women tapping away at keyboards, connected but separate, when inspiration hit. “What if I could create a beautiful, inviting, creative space for local female entrepreneurs and ‘work from home’ women that would feel like home – but without the loneliness, the stacks of laundry waiting, or the dog barking?” she mused. The idea was more than a fleeting thought for the longtime Roswell resident. Kovács ran with that vision and opened Circle and Moon this summer in the city’s historic district. “I picked Roswell, because Roswell has been my home for the past 10 years and I love it here,” said Kovács, a native of Czechoslovakia who moved to the United States as a teenager to attend the University of Texas. “There is diversity and so much beauty in Roswell.” She found a loft on Atlanta Street in the city’s center, overlooking the square, with high ceilings, plenty of natural light and the feeling of home that Kovács was seeking. “I wanted to create a hub for local females to call their own – work, collaborate and grow together,” said Kovács. “Working from home has its privileges, but drawbacks [as 10 | northsidewoman.com | november2017
well].” For Kovács, the drawbacks included the isolation she experienced when she wasn’t on the road traveling as a regional sales manager. “I wanted to be around people, if for nothing more then just having others work around me,” said the single mother of three. “So I went from coffee shop to coffee shop to find my space, [but] that wasn’t working for me.” Circle and Moon’s first client, a graphic designer and calligrapher, moved in in June, with others following soon after, drawn to the idea of a women-only work space. Here they find a work environment specifically designed for women, with decor, furnishings and functions to support their needs. “You can feel the difference as soon as you enter the space. It’s relaxing, beautiful and has a very nice energy,” said Kovács. But Circle and Moon is more than just about working. It offers workshops and other meetups on a regular basis, provides networking opportunities, and is creating small groups to brainstorm ideas, collaborate on projects, and act as a sounding board for each other. “The most amazing benefit we’ve seen so far is the friendships and the collaborations that come out of being a part of this group,” said Kovács. The name of her business also reflects Kovács ideals for her business. “Circle means the community that we are creating,” she explains. “When women gather in circles, something magical happens. Moon represents the highest feminine energy, so that had to be incorporated as well.” Creating a work hub for women was important to Kovacs, who believes women can lose their “voice” in a corporate world often dominated by men. “The driving mission [for Circle and Moon] was I felt there was a lack of community for females who are either in the workforce or on their own running a business,” said
Kovács. “The mission [here] is to support and empower women...a welcoming space for them to call their own to work.” After earning her business degree, Kovács spent years climbing the corporate ladder. While she found business success, she also felt a lack of connection. “In corporate America I felt I had no voice, and also realized that women weren’t particularly nice to each other,” she laughed. “So I wanted to create a space where women were comfortable and really did support one another and celebrate each other’s successes and joys. This is not only possible, but vital for our future.” Kovács said there is not a formal screening process for clients, but she is intentional about who joins Circle and Moon. “The first day is always free and we usually know by the end of the day if this is a good fit for both parties,” said Kovács. “We have a very diverse group – but the common denominator, I believe, is that we all enjoy being around other women.” Circle and Moon is the only womenonly business hub in the area, and word has gotten out quickly about its innovative approach. “We’ve been contacted by female entrepreneurs from around the country as they get to know about our space via [social media],” said Leni. She added she has fielded requests to open other locations. But Circle and Moon is still in its infancy, and Kovács looks to grow, deliberately and purposefully. “We have room to grow within our first location, and we are very committed to building a solid foundation,” said Kovács. ■

Fall Fashion Trends for 2017
herstyle
herstyle By LORI WYNNE Style Contributor
A
fter a long hot summer, it is finally time to don our cold-weather clothes. If your fall/winter wardrobe looks exactly as it did last year, it’s time to add a few updated pieces to add some spice and variety to your cold-weather ensembles. Here are a few of my favorite trends for fall 2017. Choose one to update some of your favorite fall classics.
Velvet
It is everywhere this season. From small pieces of trim on a blouse to whole pairs of pants, velvet is the easiest trend to wear this fall. To make it fresh and something to wear on a daily basis instead of just for holidays, this season wear velvet in soft shades of blush. It’s a great neutral you can pair with deeper colors of fall such as olive, plum, grey and teal. Consider adding a blush pair of velvet jeans found at Anthropologie and Bloomingdales.
Floral or tapestry booties
Tall or short, statement booties are a big hit this season. Since you probably already own booties in neutral colored leather, spruce up your fall wardrobe with this footwear trend. Since the bold pattern and color of this footwear commands such visual attention, pair this with a neutral outfit in solid tones.
Cropped flared bottoms
This hemline is great to wear with your statement booties. It is a bold silhouette, but a fun trend that can carry you through to spring when you are more apt to wear a sandal or a simple flat. Update your fall wardrobe by adding cropped flare hems in denim for casual, and black or charcoal for business or more dressy occasions.
Sleeves, sleeves, sleeves
Any flounce, ruffle, bell or flare sleeve is on trend this season. If you need to update your sweaters or button-down blouses this season, consider acquiring your tried-and-true foundation basics with a fun sleeve detail for an updated look.
70’s colorful plaid Plaid always makes a good showing each fall season, but to truly be on trend in 2017 wear a bright and bold plaid with a ‘70s vibe. Invest in one short jacket or a statement pencil skirt in an eye-catching plaid to celebrate fall and show how truly avant-garde you are.
Statement colors for fall: Red and Ochre The runways were full of bold red dresses and head-to-toe outfits in bright red. If you are not sure if red is the color for you, choose a true cool-toned red. The vibrant hue looks good on all skin types.
Ochre yellow tones
These shades can be found this season in velvet dresses with cold shoulders, shiny silky blouses with self-ties and overcoats. For those who embrace the autumn tones year round, the return of this warm hearty tone is a welcome change. This year, ochre is a neutral color, so pair it with anything that you would normally pair with brown or black. To be truly fetching this fall, pair it with colors in the same rich tones. ■

Feasting on fiction pays off All e-book sales of recipe-filled short story collection to benefit Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI ContributingWriter
S
ix area authors are offering up six sweet or, depending on the ingredients, savory gifts just in time for Thanksgiving: An anthology of short stories shaped by – and ending with – treasured family recipes. And the spirit of giving doesn’t stop there. Fully 100 percent of e-book royalties from “Love Around the Table” will benefit Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities. As the title suggests, romance, friendship and family fill the half-dozen tales by Rachel Jones, Linda Joyce, Constance Gillam, Marilyn Baron, Melissa Klein and Ciara Knight, all members of the Atlanta chapter of Romance Writers of America. For nearly a year, the women, authors of 60-plus books between them, met around tables at area restaurants to discuss myriad publishing details, chief among them the collection’s philanthropic objective. “The project goal was always to give back to the community by donating all sales of the e-book to a local charity connected to children, families and food,” said Roswell’s Baron. “Although the anthology is launching around Thanksgiving and could be considered an early Christmas gift, it’s the gift that keeps on giving because Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities will always benefit from the e-book sales year-round and into the future.” Receiving donations in the form of e-book purchases is a first for the organization, according to Beth Howell, ARMHC president and CEO. A recipe-filled anthology, however, complements the nonprofit’s mission of offering lodging and meals to families with ill and injured children receiving medical care nearby. “Food is a central component of the comfort we provide here,” Howell said. “Food is about love, and I think that’s a lot of what this book is about.” Indeed, “Love Around the Table” focuses on relationships shaped by recipes that reveal as much about the stories as they do the women who penned them. In “Mississippi Catfish,” Gillam writes about a black girl and white boy who bond over fishing as they navigate 14 | northsidewoman.com | november2017

the racial waters of 1930s rural Mississippi. Gillam said her mother, who was born and raised in a remote Mississippi area called D’Lo in the 1930s, adored fried catfish. Eight decades later, her daughter ended her first short story with a recipe for fried catfish as “a sign of friendship and acceptance between a black girl and white boy during a turbulent time.” In Joyce’s offering, “Layers of Love,” life catapults a pastry chef into a career change that reveals the depths of friendship and love with the help of a princess castle birthday cake. Joyce’s own award-winning recipe, Linda’s Carrot Cake with Orange Glaze, drives the plot. “When I was 10 years old, my mother taught me to make this cake,” Joyce said. It would be a winner in her high school Future Homemakers of America cake contest. And, decades later, it’s still her go-to dessert that “brings back the fondest cooking memories I have with my mother.” Similarly, Klein relies on a beloved recipe from her own childhood in “Table for Six.” The “sweet romance” involves Sam, a harried widower with four rambunctious daughters, and Jessica, an injured veteran who learns there’s room for one more around Sam’s table. Chicken Squares, a simple family favorite Klein’s mother began making in the ’70s, is the dish Jessica teaches her young charge, Alice, to make. “At this point in the story,” Klein said, “Jessica doesn’t see a future with Sam and his girls, and she wants to leave Alice with some easy recipes she can cook.” Baron’s offering, “No More Lonely Hearts,” features a caregiver son and an activities director at a senior living facility who discover the magical powers of love. Romance unfolds as the chef at Eternal Springs prepares the residents’ favorite dishes. “He feels food entices the memories of happier times and gives them a flavor of home,” Baron said. The hero’s mother’s signature creation is Spaghetti alla Carbonara, the recipe for which Baron acquired from a chef in Florence, Italy, while studying abroad in the ’70s. In Baron’s family, as well as in her fiction, the pasta dish has since served as the centerpiece for decades of happy memories. “I’ve made it for my family and company countless times,” she said. In “A Sister’s Quandary,” Jones uses a life-threatening diagnosis – and squash – to trigger forgiveness and healing between estranged twins. Reunited by medical

necessity, the sisters in Jones’s story mend their relationship by recalling memories of their grandmother, including the squash casserole she taught them to make. “This cooking recollection is the beginning of more good memories that aid in their healing process,” Jones said. The recipe – Rachel’s Summer Squash Casserole – made its real debut at the first solo Thanksgiving Jones prepared in 1984. As in her story, the recipe has since been passed down to a younger generation of family cooks. Pot roast is a main character in Knight’s “Turning the Table on Love,” in which a lazy Susan disaster splatters the news of a famous baseball player reuniting with his smalltown sweetheart. After Avery Morgan’s parents die, Slow Cooker Pot Roast is the first recipe she learns to prepare. “It was perfect for a sister-turned-mom since it was quick and easy and provided a homey feeling to a broken family,” Knight said. In real life, Slow Cooker Pot Roast is one of her personal favorites because it’s quick and easy, leaving more time for family. “Whether making recipes passed down from my grandmother, my mother-in-law, or my mother,” Knight said, “there is one common ingredient: family love.” ■
I grew up in Roswell and have been heavily invested in this community since I was a kid. When I got married and started thinking about where I wanted to raise my own family, I could think of no better place than my hometown of Roswell. This place always has and always will be my home.
What are your thoughts on the region’s transition to a business and residential magnet in Metro Atlanta?
The growth we’ve experienced in this area over the past couple decades is a testament to the high quality of life we have in Roswell and all of North Fulton. Speaking for Roswell, specifically, we have one of the best parks and recreation systems in the nation, great schools, a fantastic restaurant and brewery scene, a growing arts and culture community, in addition to safe, friendly neighborhoods. It’s not surprising that more and more people want to move both their families and their businesses to this area.
Do you believe the region is successfully balancing residential interests?
I believe that’s where the importance of thinking regionally really comes into play. At Roswell Inc, we guide economic development efforts for our city, which means we regularly look to balance these issues locally. However, to do that, we also work collaboratively with our neighboring cities and regional and state agencies to ensure that we are all thinking about how our region is growing together.
Outside the office, how important is community involvement?
To me, community involvement is essential. I have been heavily involved in my community since I was in high school. It’s how I built my business, and it’s how I’m working now at Roswell Inc to build a healthy, sustainable community for my kids and grandkids.
In your free time, where will we find you?
You can usually find me spending time with my three daughters, watching Georgia football, dining out with friends, and taking trips to the beach. ■

t all started with a group of supportive friends for Cecily Mohammed. Mohammed, now a senior, joined the Chattahoochee High School football team her freshman year after her male friends saw how good she was at playing. While the group was still transitioning out of middle school, Mohammed’s peers convinced her to try out. “We always joked about how we always did everything together, and that I should try out for the high school football team, too,” Mohammed said. “I thought it would be really hard at first my freshman year, especially with the senior kids. But the head coach, Vince Strine, has been really amazing and made the adjustment easy. And the guys were actually very nice and very supportive.” Mohammed has since played as the team’s kicker throughout her high school career, in between heading her breast cancer research organization Project Think Pink, and has already committed to

As Chattahoochee’s first female football player, Mohammed said she has found incredible support in her team and has spoken to multiple girls her age looking to join a football team. “I just kept telling them that you shouldn’t be afraid to try something, especially if it’s something unusual,” she said. “Just go for it and do your best. See what happens. That’s what I did, and I was fortunate enough to be able to continue to do it – something I love doing.” ■

ust go for it” is the advice of Northview High School’s own junior varsity placekicker Maddie Bernard. Everyone, regardless of gender, shouldn’t let their fear or reservations keep them from trying out for a sport they love – especially football. “We are all one family,” Bernard said. “Trying something new can lead to new experiences. Just don't take my spot!” Bernard, herself, went for it shortly after she was inspired by another female football player. She hasn’t looked back since. “The idea of trying out came to mind [before], but I never really thought much about it,” Bernard said. “But then I went to a few varsity football games last year, and there was another girl kicker on the team: Olivia Mitrovich. She inspired me to try out and push myself out of my comfort zone.” After she joined the team, Bernard said she continued to feel Mitrovich’s legacy in how her teammates and coaches interacted with her. Despite the widespread view that football is a boy’sonly club, Bernard said she was met with a welcoming atmosphere. “At first, the boys didn’t really think I was on the team, but they have been very

o many op-ed articles are written about being Thankful during this time of year with a lot of the same old tried & true reasons to be thankful ~ we all know what they are. But what are we really thankful for and how do we instill in our children to be thankful for the right things in life? Changing the wording a little in the Forrest Gump movie……”thankful IS as thankful DOES”. When my first son was born, he was premature and I had to leave the hospital without him. Boy, was I devastated. My baby just needed to get a little bigger, certainly nothing compared to some of the neonatal conditions of other newborns and the heartaches of their parents. From that prospective…wow, how lucky I was! Throughout my life, I have applied this prospective to many
other situations. Is whatever going on with me at the moment really that bad? How many people would gladly change places with me and be overcome with a grateful spirit just to be in my “terrible” situation? So….Thankful IS as THANKFUL DOES. Without being naive or unrealistic about a situation you find yourself in, just try looking at it with a thankful eye ~ the “gratitude attitude” and act/react accordingly. Sometimes you will find yourself in a tough spot~a heartache~an unpleasant task. But, how we show our children that we have so many more things to be thankful for than not, we will learn to live throughout the year being thankful and verbalizing it around our children instead of just around the dinner table at Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours. ■

Sprucing up your pet for the holidays ahead
did we see you there?
By Dr. JoAnne Roesner, DVM, DABVP Loving Hands Animal Clinic – Alpharetta www.lovinghands.com

ith the holidays fast approaching, many of us are making sure our homes and families look their best for the months ahead. And many of those efforts extend to our four-legged family members, as well! Our canine children can often become soiled or smelly and may require a do-it-yourself cleansing bath to truly make the best impression. Despite the reluctance of your pet to take the plunge, the process is relatively easy at home. During the colder weather, it’s best (and easier) to bathe your pet in the shower or tub. During warmer months, pets can be bathed outside, but fall and winter necessitates bathing indoors. First, it is important to use a good quality dog shampoo – one that is formulated for pet hair and not human hair! Start with a wet dog. If you don’t have a spray nozzle in your tub, you can use a cup or pail to pour rinse water over your pet. It is crucial to protect your pet’s eyes from contact with soap. This can cause damage to the surface of the eye. Bathing the face with a sponge or washcloth or covering

It is also important to dry out the ears after bathing because water in the ear can cause irritation and head shaking and predispose your pet to possible infection. If you want to trim your dog’s nails, it is easier to do this right after a bath when the nails are soft. After towel drying, pets who are not afraid can be dried with a blow dryer. If that is not possible, air drying in a warm area is fine. Alternatives to bathing at home include using a professional pet groomer or utilizing a dog wash facility where you can have someone else do it – or do it yourself with their equipment. The groomer can do haircuts, dyes
and nail polish as well as just cleaning up your dog. Dog washes have equipment like step-in tubs, ramps, and driers that make bathing more convenient and less messy than home. As far as our feline companions, cats are inherently good groomers and rarely require bathing or grooming. Typically, they do not accept bathing as well as dogs, and can be quite difficult and resistant during bathing. Some cats even require sedation for bathing, so a discussion with your veterinarian may be in order. In these instances, veterinary clinics use professional groomers in the event sedation is required. This is probably the best choice for cat baths. ■

That’s Italian! Casa Nuova finds new home in north suburbs
By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
A
fter running five successful Italian restaurants in the Buckhead area for years, Antonia and Maria Fundora took a chance on the northern suburbs for their sixth venture. In 1998, the two opened Casa Nuova (“new house”) in Alpharetta, taking on a name that signified new beginnings in both business and life in Alpharetta. At the time, North Fulton was just making the transition from sleepy Atlanta suburb to a vibrant dining destination, so the decision came with some trepidation. “We were slightly afraid,” Maria laughed, recalling the decision to uproot from their longtime home for the ‘burbs. “We would drive through the surrounding neighborhoods, trying to assure ourselves that there would be enough people here to support our dream restaurant.” Twenty years later, the decision has paid off well, with the restaurant still drawing the same crowds who turned up in the early days and have continued to return. “It started with knowing our customer base,” said Maria. “We really went back to the basics of traditional Italian f ood, in a cozy, family-friendly [environment].” The menu and atmosphere draw upon the couple’s long history in the restaurant business. Antonio, who is the master chef, has been in the kitchen for more than 30 years, perfecting a menu that he knows his customers will love.
Maria, whom he married in 1987, grew up at the center of the restaurant world. Her father, Jose Llanes, was a longtime restaurateur in the Chicago area – a hub of authentic Italian cuisine. “I have really never left the business,” said Maria, who runs the front of the restaurant and attends to the business details of Casa Nuova. The concept of Casa Nuova, which is located on Atlanta Highway, adheres to the basic formula of success – great food and drinks at an affordable price. “We have tried to hold on to that goal of a family destination from the start,” said Maria. “Of course we want to be the place people come to on special occasions, birthdays, and all, but we try to make anytime and everyday special for our customers.” The menu hits all the high notes for Italian food, including the “must try” items that Maria says are most popular. Those include fried calamari, Caesar salad, any veal dish (“the best in town,” she adds), lasagna, chicken scarpariello, and grouper Francese. About 10 years ago, chef Antonio began incorporating the farm to table approach, well before it became the trend. He planted a garden to help support the menu, and now fresh ingredients straight from the chef’s garden are the standard for Casa Nuova. Also homegrown are the recipes. Antonio began working in Italian restaurants as a young man in New York City and has perfected the recipes over the years. Maria notes her mother was also a great cook, especially with soups, and her recipes also form the base for the menu. She loves that her customers constantly say they feel like they have been “transported to Italy” when they are at Casa Nuova. “We really put love in our food and service,” said Maria, noting there is very little staff turnover. “And we always recognize our [regular] customers the moment they walk through the door.” As an established business, Maria said the restaurant is very involved in the community, supporting local high school sports teams, animal welfare organizations, and numerous groups that support cancer patients and research. “[Giving back] to the community is very important to us,” said Maria. ■

orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on designing for the Life Styles of today.
Taking the Fear out of Design
A
nother Halloween night has come and gone…for some folks it was fun and exciting… with anticipation and treats. Yet for others it was an anxious and scary time, not quite sure of what would happen next, or what surprises were waiting for them. It’s a lot like what people feel about getting new furnishings for their home, whether you’ve just bought a new house or decided to remodel. The excitement of getting a new style, or treating yourself to that special piece…but it also can be a scary time, too. Many people are afraid of making mistakes, such as: • “There are so many choices, styles, products, fabric, etc. it’s overwhelming” • “Where do I go, and who do I talk to, that can help me get the most for my money” • “Mistakes are costly - I have to live with them” • “What if my style/taste is just bad” • Maybe you’ve heard that having design assistance will lead to: • “I will overspend on the merchandise or design fees”
•
“The designer will show me the most expensive items” • “They will add hidden fees/markups” • “It will be the designers vision and not function or look like I want” So how can you give yourself the best chance to achieve the look you want, and take the fear and anxiety out of the process? Whether you are a design novice, or already have great taste and just need some assistance, the best way to ensure your success is to have a PLAN. A client focused designer will work with you to develop a plan for your vision, will be able to offer more than one style, will listen to your wants and needs, considering function and fashion. He/she will understand how all the pieces will fit your space, knowing if colors/ styles work together. You can then decide how to move ahead, whether all at once or piece by piece. If you have plan for what you want to accomplish, big or small, you will reduce your stress and give you the comfort of knowing it will all fit together in the end to give you the look that you dreamed of. ■

There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times.” MODERN OB/GYN
26 | northsidewoman.com | november2017
When is the best time for orthodontic treatment?
Minimally invasive surgical options in gynecologic medicine he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim and Dr. Stacey Pereira of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day convenient in-office procedures that require no downtime and can be done in the office. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fast-growing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

rthodontic treatment today is about faces not just braces. Consequently, facial esthetics dictates the proper timing for treatment. While treatment can contribute to the physical and psychological development of patients young and old, some patients require early intervention. The JORDAN American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial visit to an orthodontist at age 7 for this reason. Most patients do not need early treatment, but if necessary, amazing improvements in facial esthetics and function can be accomplished. The majority of patients benefit from a single treatment during adolescence, as the last few primary teeth are lost and the second molars erupt. The exact age varies, but most teens are in a rapid growth phase at this time. As a result, dramatic results can be achieved with improved facial esthetics and function. For example, the smile can be made wider, the lower jaw

illions of Americans avoid the dentist. Some had traumatic experiences as children. Others suffered pain as adults. No matter the reason, far too many of these individuals simply stopped seeking routine dental care because they were frightened. Now’s the time to move forward into a healthier future. Modern dentistry offers many new tools and options that make necessary treatments not only tolerable but even comfortable. But now there’s a new way for the dentally challenged to get their needed treatment without having to go through all the fear and anxiety. And, what’s more, they likely won’t even remember going to the dentist. It’s called “Sedation Dentistry” and is available right now at our dental office. Not all dentists are qualified or licensed to use this option. Approximately 1 in 8 dentists in Georgia is licensed to do Sedation. “The way it works is quite simple,” says Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Suwanee dentist Dr. Ushma Patel. “One hour before the appointment the patient simply takes a pill that we have dispensed to them. By the time they arrive for their appointment they are very relaxed.” The patient is then escorted to the dental chair. They gradually progress to a deeper level of sedation but are still able
to respond to their environment and to questions from the doctor. Dr. Ushma Patel explains, “The patient will feel no pain and in fact will have little or no memory of the experience after it’s all PATEL over.” The patient’s vital signs are constantly monitored throughout the treatment. “When they awaken a friend drives them home and in an hour or so they are pretty much back to normal,” says Dr. Ushma Patel. “The best CORBETT part is that they have no bad memories, and they don’t experience any pain or anxiety.” The patient isn’t “knocked out” or in total sedation like they would be for a surgery. The level of sedation isn’t that deep, but just deep enough so that they feel nothing but are still conscious. Is Sedation Dentistry only for fearful patients? Dr. Ushma Patel says no. “Some people, while they are not at all afraid of dental treatment, are highly resistant to anesthetic. They just can’t get numb. Other people simply don’t have the time to make repeated visits to the dentist and would rather have all their work done in one longer visit. Sedation Dentistry takes care of both problems.” For more information on Sedation Dentistry call Dr. Ushma Patel at 678-8947926 or visit them on the web at www. JohnsCreekSedationDentist.com. If this sounds like you or a loved one or someone you know then please let them know that they have an option now. P.S- The end of the year is fast approaching. Use your dental benefits before they expire December 31st- If you don’t use them, you lose them! Call now to schedule your appointment while we have appointments available at your convenience! ■

hat if you or an older adult in your life could slow or even reverse the decline typically associated with aging? Residents at Atria Senior Living’s five Atlanta-area communities are doing just that through Better This Year, Atria’s forward-thinking approach to greater well-being. According to research conducted by Dr. Henry Lodge, co-author of The New York Times best-seller Younger Next Year: The New Science of Aging, a surprising 70 percent of how successfully we age is determined by four key lifestyle choices. Exercise – Exercise triggers the body’s natural repair processes and the benefits are dramatic. Connection – People who are part of a caring community live longer than those who are isolated and lonely. Nutrition – Having consistent access to nourishing, appetizing food is important to staying healthy longer. Goals – Setting short- and long-term goals to challenge oneself promotes a sense of purpose. Atria purposefully cultivates a culture of well-being by offering residents meaningful opportunities to make smarter lifestyle choices every day. ealth and confidence. Two words we often hear in this age of millennials. Though we all may not be millennials, we still desire to achieve our optimal levels in both health and confidence. For some, when we have reached our peak of oral health, we gain confidence wherever we go with the statement of our bold beautiful smiles. For others, we may gain confidence in the simplest acts of life, such as freedom to eat our favorite foods free of pain. Dr. George Dinulescu and Dr. Cesar Tapia both graduates of University of Colorado, recently launched ConfiDenT, LLC, their new dental practice in
Alpharetta. Their desire is to help all striving to achieve these goals of oral health and confidence, through the utmost in dental technology paired with a caring and welcoming dental team. Originally from Romania, Dr. George is licensed to practice dentistry in both the European Union and the United States. Dr. Cesar, originally from Peru received the Humanitarian Award for his outstanding care, veracity, and integrity towards his patients. Photodynamic Therapy HALT Stress (PDT) — A Blue Stop Management Sign for Skin Cancer I I SPONSORED SECTION
t’s a given. We all have stress. Somedays we are pretty good at managing it. Other days we are not. Whether we damage ourselves or those around us, whether the damage is immediate or sneaky & slow, the clincher is identifying that you are stressed out before you act crazy. Here is a quick and easy acronym to help you see the yellow flag before it becomes red: HALT. Hungry. Angry. Lonely. Tired. Hungry: Oh yes, we all know this one and can spot it in friends who are normally nice but just blew their top over something small or manageable. If you are hungry, do not make important decisions or quick assessments until you’ve eaten something. Angry: Yep, let’s check that one on the list too. Did you know that when you are angry, it is biologically difficult for your brain to process rational thought? It’s as if those nerves bypass the many filters we have and have a short cut to regretful words and actions. Lonely: This one is surprisingly common. If your life feels like a hurricane, then you are probably lonely sitting in the eye. It seems calm, but you feel empty. It’s difficult to make decisions at this point because your perspective becomes warped. Go to the park and walk around. Say hi to everyone you meet. Smile at the children. Then make your decisions. Tired: Zzzzzzz, good morning Sunshine! Did you not get enough sleep last night? Our brains needs sleep to process our thoughts and activities of the day. Without sleep, the information in your head is like a computer in need of defragment. Islands of information are just floating around with no logic to tie them all together. The next time you are stressed. Recognize HALT conditions and refrain from decisions and comments. Try it once. Then go and give yourself a reward - something you don’t normally allow yourself. Then try HALT again, and again. ■
t is often after a patient’s first Mohs surgery that I am asked a very important question: What can I do to prevent future skin cancer surgeries? Besides jumping into a DeLorean and convincing your adolescent self to use sunscreen and wear a hat, one of the best options for resolving much of your sun damage lies in none other than more exposure to light! But sun worshipers need not get too excited – this is not the light of more sun exposure or of indoor tanning beds but rather photodynamic therapy (nicknamed PDT or blue light therapy). The question of whether someone has skin cancer is not always black or white. Often, there are shades of gray. Yes, many moles are simply healthy, and a few other growths prove to be melanoma. However, for most people and for most concerning growths, skin cancers progress through early “precancerous” stages when they can be more easily treated and can be addressed noninvasively and non-surgically. Many squamous cell carcinomas begin as a “pre-cancer” called an actinic keratosis or “AK” – a rough or discolored area that usually arises in an area of
sun-damaged or sunexposed skin. Often, a heavily sun-damaged individual will have ten or twenty actinic keratoses. AK’s typically grow slowly with perhaps 1-2% progressing to skin cancer per year. To put TAYLOR it simply, if you have 10 AKs on your body, you have a 10%-20% chance per year that one will develop into a skin cancer. This slow growth rate means that there is time to treat AKs before they become skin cancer. If individuals with red or rough sundamaged skin address their sun damage now, they will have less reason to regret their fun summer memories later. Active individuals such as the residents of our area enjoy family time outdoors, golfing, going to the pool, and outdoor exercise. These minutes clocked under the sun add up. Luckily, a single PDT treatment can erase 75% of precancers in a single area in just one treatment. So what exactly is PDT? During PDT, a nurse or physician applies a liquid medicine called ALA to
the area to be treated: often the face, scalp, neck or décolletage undergo therapy, but other areas such as the arms may also be treated. The ALA incubates and sits on the skin for one to four hours. ALA is absorbed by unhealthy cells during the incubation phase. A blue light specially designed to activate ALA is then applied for about fifteen minutes. Blue light of 410-420nm in wavelength activates the ALA, causing it to damage the unhealthy cells and allowing them to be eliminated and replaced by healthy skin. Blue light therapy is selective -- it causes the destruction of precancerous cells without significantly damaging surrounding healthy cells. After PDT treatment, a patient should completely avoid the sun for at least 48 hrs, as the treatment will mimic a moderate sunburn. It takes roughly 4-6 weeks for patients to see the overall improvement in their skin but depending on the degree of sun damage, the effects can be dramatic! An added benefit of PDT is an overall healthier complexion, more even skin tone, reduced acne (PDT treatments are also used for acne issues), and a more youthful appearance. Usually covered by insurance, PDT is an excellent treatment option for someone looking to eliminate pre-cancers and decrease the chances of future skin cancers. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we are proud to offer BLU-U, the gold standard in PDT treatment. Visit www.PremierDermAtl.com to learn more about PDT, Dr. Brent Taylor or Premier Dermatology’s other treatment options. ■

Five Myths And Facts About Cholesterol H igh cholesterol is a known risk factor for heart disease and stroke and is estimated to cause nearly 2.6 million deaths annually. Yet, a survey from the American Heart Association shows that nearly two-thirds of people who have high cholesterol don’t think they’re at high risk for a heart attack or stroke. “My Cholesterol Guide” is a new, online tool that provides information, practical tips and downloadable resources to help the more than 94.6 million Americans living with high cholesterol. The guide is the latest offering from the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke. What it is Cholesterol is a waxy, fatlike substance found in all cells of the body. Elevated levels of blood cholesterol can create blockages in the arteries and is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. “People with high cholesterol usually don’t have symptoms, so unless you get tested, you may not realize you need treatment,” said Ann Marie Navar, M.D., Ph.D., a volunteer member of the Association’s Cholesterol Advisory Committee and an Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the Duke Clinical Research Institute in Durham, N.C. “Even though we have a lot of evidence about the benefits and safety of cholesterol-lowering treatment, the challenge is that cholesterol remains underdiagnosed and subsequently undertreated.” What to do The best way to manage high cholesterol is a multipronged approach, including diet, exercise and medication if cholesterol levels remain elevated, she said. The challenge is that many people don’t recognize their risk due to some of the following misconceptions
about cholesterol. Myths and Facts Myth 1--High cholesterol isn’t a concern for children. High cholesterol can be hereditary. Familial hypercholesterolemia is a genetic disorder that can cause early heart disease. If someone is diagnosed with extremely high cholesterol or familial hypercholesterolemia, it’s important that all family members get tested, including young adults and children, so that treatment isn’t delayed, Navar said. Myth 2--You don’t need a cholesterol check until you’re middle-aged. Getting your cholesterol checked starting at age 20 and talking with your health provider to ensure you understand what it means is crucial because getting treated early can play an important role in reducing the
risk of heart disease. “For every decade your cholesterol is high in your 30s and 40s, you increase your risk for heart disease by more than 30 percent,” Navar said. Myth 3--Thin people don’t have high cholesterol. Overweight people are more likely to have high cholesterol, but even people who maintain a healthy weight and regular exercise can have high cholesterol. “Since genetics does play such an important role, some people may be doing everything right and still have high cholesterol,” she said. Myth 4--If the nutrition label shows no cholesterol, a food is “heart healthy.” Nutrition labels can be helpful, but you should read beyond the amount of cholesterol a food contains. “It’s important to look for saturated fats, trans fats and added sugars because these all affect our heart health and cholesterol levels,” Navar said. Myth 5--Only people with “high” cholesterol need medicine to lower their cholesterol. “Even people whose cholesterol falls within what we would call ‘normal’ range can benefit from having cholesterol-lowering medication if they have other risks for heart disease or stroke,” Navar said. “Beyond just your cholesterol numbers, knowing your overall risk of heart disease can help determine if you need to be on treatment.” Where to learn more The American Heart Association’s Check.Change. Control.Cholesterol initiative, supported by Sanofi and Regeneron, has information and resources for identifying and managing your cholesterol and other cardiovascular risk factors. Are you looking for Assisted Living? Do you need quality Home Care? Who will Pay for the Costs?
We have the Answers . . .
Don’t go it alone… By AMY HENTSCHEL
T
he phone rings at work, and you learn from your brother that mom is at the hospital again. Thankfully, she has avoided breaking anything from this recent fall, but she needs therapy. After a few weeks, the social worker at her rehab informs you that her doctor is recommending assisted living instead of going home. You have less than a week to find, choose, and move your mother before she is discharged. You start by calling the community that the rehab recommends, but no one calls you back. You drive across town to tour a facility that a friend at church suggests, only to find that they are above your budget. Another 2 hours wasted and the clock is ticking. Your brother looked online and has a “list” of places to go tour. The first place you go has no availability; the second assisted living is nice but can’t manage your mother’s insulin. Your phone is now ringing off the hook from sales people! How did they get your cell number? You are feeling overwhelmed, the social worker just left you a message asking for a decision, and you panic as you realize that you forgot to pick your daughter up after school!
With all the decisions that you have made in your lifetime – choosing a college, job opportunities, buying a house, nothing has prepared you for finding care for a parent. You feel HENTSCHEL completely alone, BUT you are not. A senior care consulting agency, like Senior Provisions LLC, believes that you should not be alone on this journey. Our local advisors are knowledgeable of all care options, costs and only recommend communities that match your family’s personal circumstances. We believe that your privacy is important and will never share your contact information with sales people without your permission. Our local advisors know every community, their track record of care, strengths and weaknesses and can provide references from families that have lived there. Within 24 hours, we will narrow down your options to 2-3 communities that best meet your mom’s needs, guide you through your decision, and help with the transition. Don’t go it alone, you don’t need to. ■

t doesn’t matter if your glass is halfempty or half-full: Drinking water is always good for your health. Our bodies are made of 60% water, and staying hydrated helps your system distribute healthy nutrients, gets rid of waste, gives your skin a healthy glow and keeps your muscles moving. Sipping water is also one of the best things you can do for your teeth – especially if it’s fluoridated. Read on to find out why water is always a winner for your dental health. It Strengthens Your Teeth Drinking water with fluoride (called “nature’s cavity fighter”) is one of the easiest and most beneficial things you can do to help prevent cavities. A modern-day tale of two cities shows what a difference fluoride makes, especially in community water systems. In 2011, the Canadian city of Calgary stopped adding fluoride to its water. Curious about the impact, researchers compared Calgary second graders with kids in the same age group in Edmonton, a Canadian city that has had fluoridated water since 1967. Their research, published in the February 2016 journal Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, found children in non-fluoridated Calgary had more tooth decay than children in the city with uninterrupted fluoridation. It Keeps Your Mouth Clean Drinking juice, soda or sports drinks may help you wash down your dinner, but they can leave unwanted sugar behind on your teeth. The cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth love to eat sugar and produce acid that wears away enamel, which is the outer shell of your teeth. Many of these drinks also have added acids (phosphoric, citrus or malic acid) to make them taste less sweet, but those acids also eat away at your teeth. Water, however, cleans your mouth with every sip. It washes away leftover
food and residue that cavity-causing bacteria are looking for. It also dilutes the acids produced by the bacteria in your mouth. You’ll still need to brush twice a day for two minutes and clean DR. REMALEY between your teeth, but drinking water through the day will go a long way toward keeping your smile cavity-free. It Fights Dry Mouth Saliva is your mouth’s first defense against tooth decay. It washes away leftover food, helps you swallow with ease and keeps your teeth strong by washing them with calcium, phosphate and fluoride. When your saliva supply runs low, dry mouth may put you at risk for tooth decay. Drinking water can help cut your risk as you and your dentist work to find the best long-term solution for you. It’s Calorie-Free Sweetened drinks that are high in sugar and calories, create a perfect storm that puts you at risk for cavities and other unhealthy consequences like weight gain. In fact, studies have shown that drinking water can actually help you lose weight. So the next time you need a drink, go guiltfree with water to take care of your body and your smile. Recently voted Best Dentist of North Atlanta in “The Best of the Best” contest, Roswell Dental Care can help you maintain that healthy smile for a lifetime. Dr. David Remaley has been treating patients like family for over 30 years in Roswell and the North Atlanta area. We will be happy to offer a COMPLMENTARY evaluation if you orany family member is experiencing any dental complications or oral discomfort. We always welcome new patients and are available for same day dental emergencies. Give our office a call at (470) 375- 9244 to schedule an appointment. ■

This sets me far and away, above the average permanent makeup artist. My clients and patients are very selective. They expect only the highest quality artistic design in a safe, medical setting.
