Serving up the heat Alpharetta Chili Cook-off helps Public Safety By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Here is a riddle for you: what is hot and cold at the same time? Give up? Alpharetta’s Chili Cook-off. The fifth annual event in downtown Alpharetta drew police and firefighters of the Public Safety Department to the stove Nov. 1 as they served up homemade chili of all sorts – chicken, beef, turkey, spicy, mild and more. At the end of the event, judges declared winners of best chili. The heat of the chili was needed that day, as high winds and bitter temperatures put a chill on attendees, with everyone bundled up warm. Jeff Garreau with Fire Station No. 1 helped

present a warm chicken chili. He said his team had won several times in the past four years, taking home three awards. This year, he hoped for another win. It was not to be, as the best chili award went to Brian Turner of Fire Station No. 5. During the judging, a large screen and seating were set up to show the annual University of Georgia versus the University of Florida football game. All proceeds from ticket sales went toward the Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation, a nonprofit group dedicated to maintaining world class public safety for the citizens of Alpharetta. The Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation is comprised of volunteers that represent local businesses, churches and community programs and organizations. The foundation directly supports the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety and its personnel. For more information on the APSF, visit them online at http://www.apsfoundation.org.

ROSWELL, Ga. — The city of Roswell began implementing new security measures at City Hall, Monday, Nov. 3 for visitors to the building. All visitors are now required to pass through a security screening as they enter City Hall. Visitors will be asked to empty their pockets and security will visually inspect purses, briefcases and bags. The city has contracted with private security firm Dynamic Security to provide the screening at the public entrances to City Hall. The company has contracts with local, state and federal facilities, including the Georgia State Capitol Building. The company is contracted to provide the security for $62,946 annually.

Security officers will be stationed at the public entrances to Roswell City Hall, which include the grand staircase entrance and the south entrance on the ground level. The city is implementing the screening in response to House Bill 60, the Safe Carry Protection Act of 2014, which requires security to screen visitors as they enter government buildings that ban weapons. City Manager Kay Love said the city opted to use a private company rather than Roswell Police officers as a matter of flexibility. “Using an outside firm to staff the security screening points allows greater flexibility in scheduling and providing needed coverage for evening meetings and staff member absences for sickness or vacation,” Love said. “It is more cost effective.”
