FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — About 100 students from various Forsyth County Schools celebrated their winning PTA Reflections contest entries Nov. 16 at Riverwatch Middle School. Reflections, a national arts recognition and achievement program, invites students to submit original work to be judged in six categories — visual arts, photography, literature, music composition, dance and videography — according to Dick Workman, president of the Forsyth County Council of PTAs. This year’s Reflections theme was “Let your imagination fly.” Schools decide at the start of each year if they want to participate in the PTA program,
students turn in their work mid-fall, then professional judges select the winners. “Potentially there could be 120 number-one and numbertwo winners for the county,” Workman said. “Over 1,000 entries were submitted from the schools this year. The chosen entries will go on to the state competition. When the state gets it, it doesn’t matter if an entry was placed as a one or two at a council level. All entries are now at an equal footing.” The number of entries has stayed at around 1,000 for the past few years, he said, which could be attributed to many factors. “From the kids’ point of view, there’s a possibility of fame, notoriety, a certificate, a ribbon, having your name

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — On Nov. 17 at 11:53 a.m., deputies with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the intersection of McFarland Parkway and the Ga. 400 northbound onramp regarding a two-vehicle crash. One driver was found to be unresponsive with an obvious head injury. The investigation determined that a white 2006 Toyota Corolla, driven by Franklin Smith, 49, of Gainesville, was turning left from eastbound McFarland Parkway onto the Ga. 400 northbound onramp. A red 2011 Ford Mustang was traveling westbound on McFarland Parkway. The Mustang entered the intersection and struck the front passenger side of the Corolla. Evidence on scene indicated Smith had the green arrow to make the left turn onto Ga. 400. Smith was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He passed away from his injuries later in the afternoon. The crash remains under investigation by the FCSO’s crash investigations unit. Charges are pending. This was one of three crashes that occurred in the same area on the same date. Injuries were reported in one of the additional crashes. These accidents occurred within a three-hour span of each other.

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — After results were released recently of the FBI’s 2014 crime statistics, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is reporting Forsyth County has the lowest crime index in metro Atlanta. The chances of Forsyth residents being a victim of a serious crime are only 0.79 percent. According to the data, officers responded to a total of 1,876 crimes in 2014. That is broken down into 1,381 larcenies, 324 burglaries, 77 aggravated assaults, 62 motor vehicle thefts, 16 rapes, nine robberies and seven arsons. Other counties around Forsyth include Hall, with a 1.17 percent crime index, Cherokee is at 1.44 percent, Gwinnett’s rate is 8.82 percent and Fulton’s is 24.36 percent. “This number has decreased each year for the past couple of years, even with the population in Forsyth County increasing,” the FCSO wrote on its Facebook page. “Combinations of factors contribute to our improvements. Including, efficient deployment of resources, the involvement of our public through active communication and most importantly the hard work and diligent efforts of the men and women of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.”
the package, he found it contained two vacuum-sealed packages of marijuana and a rainbow-colored marijuana grinder. When looking into the name of the pizza delivery and suspicious package, officers found a 27-year-old man from Cumming with an arrest history, one of the charges being marijuana possession in 2007.

Restore Your Vision. Refresh Your Appearance. By Kiran Sajja, M.D.
Our eyelids play a vital role in the normal function of our eyes and maintenance of clear vision. First, the eyelids are a physical barrier that shields the eye’s surface from the damaging environment. Second, the motion of the eyelids allow for the even spread of the tear film over the surface of the eye providing a smooth surface necessary for optimal Kiran Sajja, MD. visual clarity. And finally, the Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon eyelids define the overall aesthetic of the face and convey your emotion and mood. Excess skin of the upper eyelids, referred to as dermatochalasis or “baggy eyelids”, can significantly affect an individual’s peripheral and, at times, central vision. Also, the redundant skin may become increasingly irritated associated with redness, swelling, itchiness, and discomfort. The prominence of the excess skin often gives an unintended tired, angry, or aged appearance to the face. Patient Concerns You may often complain of heaviness or puffiness of the eyelids which makes it difficult to see – this is referred to as dermatochalasis or “baggy eyelids”. Patients often remark having to lift their forehead, tilt their chin up, or manually hold the skin in order to see. This is most common when driving or reading with worsening complaints over the course of the day.
Patient Experience You can be seen at any of our five North Atlanta offices for consultation and preoperative scheduling. Surgery may be performed at our Cumming, East Cobb/Marietta, Canton, or Buford offices. During your consultation, I will perform a comprehensive facial and eyelid evaluation with visual field testing and digital photographs. I will discuss the various medical and surgical options and potential for insurance coverage based on your examination and testing. If you do not have significant subjective complaints, do not meet the requirement for functional visual field impairment, or digital photographs do not demonstrate significant dermatochalasis you would be considered for cosmetic upper blepharoplasty. You may be able to complete preoperative scheduling immediately following the consultation based on availability. Medicare and self-pay cosmetic patients may be scheduled as soon as the next day and non-Medicare patients may be scheduled within 2-6 weeks based on preauthorization approval.
30 minutes, I give you and your family/friend postoperative care instructions and you are taken home.
On the day of surgery, patients are greeted and checked into the surgical facility. I discuss the surgical plan with you and make skin markings on your eyelids in preparation for surgery. You will meet with the nurse anesthetist and nursing staff and be escorted to the operating room. You will be sedated and your eyelids will be anesthetized. During the procedure, you will be mildly sedated and experience no eyelid pain or discomfort. The procedure lasts approximately 45 minutes. After the procedure, you will be escorted to the recovery area and given a light snack and cold compresses are applied over your eyelids. After
Dr. Kiran Sajja is a Board-Certified ophthalmologist who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of the eyelids, face, orbit and lacrimal system.
After the surgery, I inform patients that swelling and bruising may worsen over the first 2-3 days. Patients are instructed to continue cold compresses for the first 24-48 hours and apply antibiotic ointment to the eyelid wounds. I will contact you by phone 2-3 days after surgery to answer any questions or concerns and review the postoperative care regimen. You will return in 1 week for suture removal. Conclusion The treatment of dermatochalasis or “baggy eyelids” with functional or cosmetic upper blepharoplasty is an effective and relatively pain-free procedure. Upper blepharoplasty serves to improve peripheral vision, eye comfort, and provide a more youthful and natural appearance. Referral to an eyelid and ophthalmic specialist will ensure the highest level of care with the attention to detail to give you the optimal result functionally and aesthetically.
He earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and completed his internship at Northwestern University, followed by an ophthalmology residency at the Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Sajja was chosen to pursue a highly selective two-year fellowship in Oculofacial Plastic Surgery at the Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary.

Little Ridge Cove, Sanders Road repairs begin Both damaged as a result of Lake Alice Dam breach CUMMING, Ga. — Work began this week to clear out excess sediment from Little Ridge Cove and to repair to Sanders Road. Both the cove and the road were damaged as a result of a breach of the Lake Alice Dam that occurred in May of 2013 after an unusually heavy rainfall event. Since that time, the dam breach has led to several thousand cubic yards of excess silt and sediment moving into nearby Little Ridge Cove. In August, the Cumming City Council approved a contract with River Sand, Inc., in the amount of $247,440 for removal of some 7,200 cubic yards of sediment. River Sand employees have brought in several different types of excavators for the project, and will be creating a temporary roadway for the sole purpose of hauling away the excess siltation. Based on the contract that was approved by the City Council, the total project is expected to be completed

in as a result of excess water moving underneath, through an undersized culvert, after the dam breach. The road has been closed since then. In September, the Cumming City Council approved a measure in which the City would pay half the costs of the repairs, while Forsyth County would pay the other half. Recently, Forsyth County Commissioners also signed off on that agreement. Martin Contracting workers will be replacing the inadequate 60-inch culvert with a new 8x8 box culvert, which has a much greater capacity and will be capable of handling any future flooding issues. Martin Contracting will also be repairing the road itself, which will allow the road to be
reopened to traffic. The Sanders Road project is expected to be complete by Dec. 31, 2015, at an estimated cost of $434,000, which will be divided equally between the City of Cumming and Forsyth County. Mandates issued to the Mashburn Family Trusts, who owned the Lake Alice Dam, and the City of Cumming by the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) concerning remediation of the Little Ridge Creek and Cove area will be fulfilled after this work is complete. The area around the Lake Alice Dam breach has been returned to its natural state prior to the construction of the dam, some 80 years ago. —Zenzele Price-Richardson

Nydia Tisdale indicted on multiple charges Charges for refusing to leave last year’s political rally By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Selfproclaimed citizen journalist Nydia Tisdale was indicted by a Dawson County Grand Jury Nov. 16. The indictment results from charges related to her refusal to leave and stop videotaping a political rally Aug. 23, 2014, at Burt’s Pumpkin Farm. The three counts include criminal trespass, a misdemeanor, and two counts of obstruction of an officer, both a misdemeanor and a felony. At last year’s rally, Tisdale was filming the multiple Republican candidates and lawmakers including Attorney General Sam Olens and Gov. Nathan Deal. She was asked to stop recording by Johnny Burt, owner of the farm, or to leave. When she refused, Dawson County Sheriff’s Capt. Tony Wooten then tried to escort her off the property. She then reportedly
kicked and fought with him, which resulted in her charges. Tisdale has said she did nothing wrong and wants the charges dropped and an additional $550,000 and a public apology. She said while she has to defend herself against criminal charges from Dawson County, she also has given them notice she intends to file a lawsuit in the civil court against them. “It’s still ongoing and it’s compounded. It’s malicious prosecution,” Tisdale said. “The traumatic event that occurred at the pumpkin farm is prolonged by this prosecution.” However, Olens is heard in Tisdale’s recording addressing the situation. “If we stand for anything as a party, what are we afraid of having a lady with a camera filming us?” he said. “What are we saying here that shouldn’t be on film? What message are we sending that because it’s private property they shouldn’t be filming it?”

Freeman announces campaign for Sheriff Court of appeals CUMMING, Ga. — Twenty-six year veteran of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and longtime Forsyth resident Ron Freeman announced his candidacy for Forsyth County Sheriff recently, promising better resource management and increased public safety. “My primary motivation for running for sheriff is to make Forsyth a safe place to live and raise a family,” Freeman said. “We don’t have an officer in Forsyth elementary schools, and keeping our children safe should be our absolutely highest priority, because school safety is not an area we can ever afford to be complacent.” Freeman started as a deputy for the FCSO in 1987 and worked his way through the
ranks to become commander of the south precinct. After two years as Deputy Chief of Police setting up the police department in Brookhaven, Ga., Freeman is currently teaching criminal justice courses to aspiring police officers in Forsyth. Freeman said that improving operational efficiencies and better management of resources are the key to improving public safety and the quality of life in all of Forsyth County. “Traffic is probably the number one quality of life issue for people who live in Forsyth, and while the sheriff’s office can’t solve that problem directly, we can deploy officers and specialized programs to manage traffic incidents
faster, and dramatically minimize any delays caused by traffic accidents,” he said. Freeman also pledged to restore the national accreditation to the FCSO, and to make all operating expenses available to the public. “Forsyth homeowners pay a lot of property tax, and they deserve the best Sheriff’s office,” said Freeman. “We were nationally accredited before, and we will be again. “As taxpayers, we have a right to know how any government agency is spending our tax dollars,” he said. “Being transparent is how you keep the public’s trust, and I’ll make our spending records available online for anyone to review.” —Zenzele Price-Richardson

Happiness is a Resident reflects on Veterans Day grateful heart With Thanksgiving just days away, it’s natural for us to be thinking of all the things we’re thankful for, like our families, jobs, houses, food, health and freedom. But with the recent terrorist attacks, natural disasters and general uneasiness all around us, it seems to get harder and harder every year to maintain a joyful attitude. It seems like everywhere we turn we see images of another bloody body or hear people saying they’ve given up on the world. And, at times, I’m right there with them. As a journalist, I have to keep up with local and world news daily, but sometimes I have to just turn off the TV or radio, put my phone away and stop reading about the madness surrounding us. Times like these are hard for someone like me, someone who strives to be positive. That’s why I love covering local news. There’s usually a silver lining to turn to and brighten whatever dreary situation is playing out. I’m a firm believer that a positive mind creates a positive life. While I’m not bubbly and happy all of the time, I do try to maintain a sunny outlook to help those around me. And I think everyone else can, too. My mind just doesn’t allow darkness to creep in, and for that I’m thankful. Not everyone has that ability so, for those of us who do, we need to be a beacon of hope, a light from the lighthouse, a shoulder to lean on and offer smiles to brighten our world. There are so many things to be thankful for and we need to hold on to those and be mindful of our many blessings. However, there are still evil, scary and dark realities out there that we can’t deny. I’ve heard time and time again that this world we live in is horrible and that people have given up hope for humanity.

While I’m not bubbly and happy all of the time, I do try to maintain a sunny outlook to help those around me. And I think everyone else can, too. My mind just doesn’t allow darkness to creep in, and for that I’m thankful. But, honestly, why? Doesn’t it bring you joy to hear children laugh, see puppies play or watch a sunset? A recent video of an elderly man helping a younger man tie a necktie went viral because it reminded people of the goodness in most people’s hearts. These are the things we need to hold on to and keep at the forefront of our minds. Without positivity and happiness, we will, in fact, fail our society. But I believe we can change that. With the upcoming holidays just around the corner, try to keep happiness and positivity in your life and you, too, will have a grateful heart. There is so much good left in this world. We need to continue spreading it around.
Since the Declaration of Independence, driven by duty and values, our sons and daughters left families and friends, jobs and careers, hopes and dreams to travel off to a new life of service to America. Many bled and died for freedom. On those uncertain mornings of their leaving, they looked back over their shoulders and thought, “Remember me. Till then, when all the world … free … please wait for me.” On a cold, rainy November morning in 2015, dampness cuts to the core of older bones with every unexpected blast of north wind. On this gray, sunless Sunday morning in Milton, Georgia, volunteers assembled to remember veterans who served in past wars. We teamed up to place crosses and American flags along sidewalks around City Hall and down along busy roads on the west side of Milton. For a time, crosses and flags will stand at attention as a reminder of ultimate sacrifices. I offered to help one of my Knight of Columbus friends put Veterans Day memorial crosses out this year. In the corner of the lot, I can see a large, white trailer surrounded by orange, red and yellow fall leaves backed up against a wall of green shrubs. On the trailer hangs hundreds of crosses. Each cross bears the name of a fallen brother or sister. No one has arrived yet. Alone in the parking lot, I walk over to the ranks and ranks of crosses and page through them, looking at the names. At first, I feel the cold separation of personal anonymity. Who died here? For whom do we pause here? Who, I wonder, were Arthur H. Lusk and Franklin P. Lusk, and Irving Lusk, Elmer F. Lusk and Sidney T. Lusk, all from one family, all with
Milton Councilmember Bill Lusk prepares to put out crosses for the Veterans Memorial in Milton.
Several hundred crosses have been made since the creation of the city to honor and remember those who have fought and died for our country. crosses here and all who have died and who have served my country? I am reminded by the poem not to ask for whom the bell tolls. These crosses are somehow me. I never knew them personally but somehow joined we are. Maybe, it is the way we value life, dignity and personal freedom that inexorably links us to the living and the dead. Each of these lives gives expression to the American values found in our heritage documents and daily lives. Values we still defend to the death.
In the corner of the lot, I can see a large, white trailer surrounded by orange, red and yellow fall leaves backed up against a wall of green shrubs. On the trailer hangs hundreds of crosses. Each cross bears the name of a fallen brother or sister.
As I touch these crosses, I feel these brothers and sisters in arms here. They literally died for my freedom and the freedom of others across the globe. The memory of their sacrifice moves my heart. Deep warmth fights the November morning chill. I am grateful for their contribution to my freedom. The cross and the flag are both fitting symbols of salvation. God and the American soldier have bled and died in compassion for the good and freedom of others, in lands all over this world. It is uniquely American to act in mercy and compassion to better the plight of others. Freedom is in our DNA. When you finish your coffee and take a ride down Deerfield Road to Home Depot one of these mornings, slow down a little. Take a closer look at the names on the crosses and, maybe, just say a little prayer for the ones they left behind. One day your love, too, may be called to bleed for freedom. Please remember these veterans and those who love them. –Bill Kelly, Milton

FCHS places third in state one-act competition By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — After winning first in the Georgia High School Association’s 7-AAAAA regional one-act competition Oct. 24, Forsyth Central High School placed third in the state championship’s AAAAA division Nov. 7. “I am proud of our thirdplace standing in a competitive state competition,” said Colleen Quigley, director of Forsyth Central’s theater department. “For two years in a row we have placed at state and taken home best actress in state. In addition, three of the 12 all-star cast recognitions were from Forsyth Central.” At the championship, Nicole Sablowski won best actress in state, while Dane Croxton, Austin Cowart and Connor Holtz snagged three of the 12 all-star cast recognitions. In addition, Forsyth Central was the only school from Forsyth County to go to the state championships. “We really just dug through what the show is about,” Quigley said in an interview with the Forsyth Herald earlier this month. “It’s a pretty deep show for high schoolers. They tackled it beautifully.” In addition to winning their

man), Nicole Sablowski, senior, won best actress for Mrs. Kendal and Dane Croxton, senior, won best supporting actor for Dr. Frederick Treves.
“That was the moment I kind of freaked out a little because I was so proud,” Quigley said. “The growth of the students is so much fun to watch
from the beginning rehearsal to the final product. As a teacher and director, that’s my reward; to see their growth and pride in their work. And to see them get those acknowledgements was huge. It shows that hard work and dedication pays off, and that’s something we try to teach.” In order to win, however, the actors must know their character. Holtz said he watched the movie to prepare for his winning role. “I was moved by it myself so I tried to take into perspective how important a good connection with the audience is,” Holtz said. “I didn’t try to question too much, I just became him. It feels like I’m doing him a justice by taking on this role seriously. I can deal with two hours of being uncomfortable with a sore back if a man is like that his entire life.” Sablowski said she watches a lot of historical British dramas on television, so she has practiced the accent before. “The show was beautiful with a phenomenally written script,” Sablowski said. “It’s unusual to see kids in our age group taking material of that caliber to competition.” For information, visit forsythcentralstage.com.

Cumming man with Down syndrome takes legislator to work CUMMING, Ga. — On Tuesday, Nov. 17, Jordan Huffman began his 6:30 p.m. shift at Rosati’s Pizza with a little added pressure. At Huffman’s invitation, Rep. Mike Dudgeon (R-District 25) joined him at the popular sports theme eatery to observe him in action as part of “Take Your Legislator to Work,” sponsored by Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities in collaboration with Employment First Georgia. The purpose of the initiative is to educate policymakers and improve public perception about the capabilities of individuals with developmental disabilities and the skills and talents they bring to a job once given the opportunity. Rosati’s owner, Matt Smith and Jordan’s Mom, Kathryn Junod were on hand, to support Huffman and the idea that most people with developmental disabilities can and want to work. Huffman, 20, has Down syndrome and, in addition to working at Rosati’s, is an usher at AMC theaters. He is very social, active in sports and volunteers in his community. Huffman competes in Special Olympics equestrian, basketball and flag football. He is a senior at Lambert High School where he has managed the varsity basketball team for the past four years. An Employment First policy benefits Georgians with disabilities who get real jobs based on their abilities, talents and passions. Huffman is currently in the process of applying for admission to Clemson University where he wants to study business. He is motivated to live independently and have his own apartment or home. He aspires to owning or co-owning a business one day and getting married. –Zenzele Price-Richardson

Royal Scottish Country Dancers to perform at library CUMMING, Ga. — Hearts and feet will pound in rhythm with traditional Scottish music at the Cumming Library as dancers from the Atlanta branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society perform on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2:00 p.m. The performance is part of the Forsyth County Public Library’s ‘One World Forsyth’ cultural programming and will include a dance demonstration and traditional Scottish treats. Patrons will also have a chance to design their own clan tartan. All ages are welcome at the event. The event is free and advance registration is not required. Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom and barn dancing of Scotland. Most of the dances were devised in the 18th century and have been preserved through the efforts of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS)
headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland. “Unlike the folk dances of most other countries, Scottish Country Dance doesn’t seem to have been confined to one grade of society only,” said Bob Messner of the Atlanta Branch of the RSCDS. “Tenants and crofters participated in these dances just like their lairds or landlords.” Lessons in Scottish Country Dance are available and popular among people all over the world. RSCDS has 160 branch groups spread across Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Africa and Australia that offer classes, dance events and demonstrations of this living art form. “These dances are fun and there are only five basic steps to learn,” Messner said. “We encourage families to come out and watch the demonstration and give the dances a try.” –Zenzele PriceRichardson

Forsyth renews contract with Lake Lanier Association By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Since 1966, the Lake Lanier Association’s mission has been to protect Lake Lanier and its watershed, ensuring a clean, full and safe Lake Lanier that enhances the lake’s economic value to Georgia. And now they’ve been granted the opportunity to continue their partnership with Forsyth County for another year. On Nov. 10, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners voted 4-0, with Jim Boff absent, to renew the agreement for 2016 and to provide $20,000 for the cause. This past year was one of the best for the association, according to Val Perry, president. Many of the programs
were highly successful, including Shore Sweep, which was held on Sept. 26 and is a massive community service cleanup day. “From Shore Sweep, collecting more than 40 tons of trash in the lake with at least 15 tons of that from Forsyth County, and that was in spite of it raining all day,” Perry said. “We’ve also done a thing called rip-rap, which is putting rocks on islands that are eroding into the lake. The first one was in Forsyth County and is a $55,000 to $60,000 job.” Another project the association does is removing large objects from the lake, including 12 items removed this year, six of which were from Forsyth County, Perry said. “You all have been the leader in
supporting and investing in our organization,” Perry said. “You all helping us may convince the other surrounding counties.” Brian Tam said he thinks the association has been a great asset to the area and community. “Some of the projects you’ve undertaken, including improving hazard markers, are really something that was needed out there,” Tam said. “It’s hard to say
Surveying your customers With the end of the year coming up, do you have plans to survey your customers? Getting feedback from your customers can help you identify what you are doing well, and where you may need to make improvements. Surveying your customers can also help improve your relationships as it provides an easy vehicle to identify ways to serve your customers better. There are many low-cost survey “systems” available for you to use to facilitate this process. Survey Monkey and Constant Contact are two examples of easy-to-use systems that you can use to not only create the survey, but also distribute it via an email and also tabulate the results. Your survey should include both multiple choice questions, such as rating your company’s products or services, and also open-ended questions requesting written feedback. You’ll want to keep your survey short to maximize the responses you get. If the survey has a lot of questions and it takes more than five minutes to

complete, you probably won’t get a lot of feedback. The most important part of surveying your customers is doing something with the data you collect. If the survey identifies that you are not meeting their expectations, it’s a great opportunity to improve in areas that are identified. Year-end customer surveys are very commonplace with large corporations, but many small-business owners don’t take advantage of this. Surveying your customers, and improving your small business from what you learn, is a great way to continue to grow your small business!

Each week for the next 40 weeks, we will publish a profile showcasing one of these individuals. Visit NorthAtlanta BusinessPost.com for more info. At-Large Selection Age: 22 Title/Company: Founder & Director of Sheltering Books Inc. Mackenzie Bearup has lived in Alpharetta for most of her life. At 10 years old, she was diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome, which she described as one of “the most painful and least known neurological disorders known in the medical world.” The only way to distract herself from the pain was by escaping into a great book. Taking that lesson, she had the thought at age 13 that other children needed to read and have similar escapes, which is how Sheltering Books Inc. was created. “If I don't have a book in my hand,
I'm probably reading an iBook on my phone or Ipad!” said Bearup, who has two younger brothBEARUP ers. Since then she has collected and donated over 350,000 books for children and young adults in homeless shelters, hospitals, schools and orphanages all over the world. With the success of Sheltering Books, Bearup became the youngest recipient of the CNN Hero award at age 16. “CNN chose me from over 25,000 applicants to be their hero,” she said. “They flew a film crew and producers out and filmed with me for three days. My story was featured on ‘Larry King Live’ and played on CNN every hour or so for about two weeks.” When not reading, Bearup enjoys photography, and even has her own photography business, Mackenzie Bearup Photography. She also loves crafts. “From painting to sewing to adding my own personal touches to nearly everything I own, I'm always figuring out ways to creatively improve things and make them prettier,” she said.

Hearing with your brain? By Dr. Deborah Woodward Johns Creek Audiology Hearing affects EVERYTHING between your ears. If you’re like most people, you’re used to thinking of hearing as something that happens in your ears. What people often don’t think about is what happens between their ears, in the hearing part of their brain. That’s where sound becomes information that has meaning. Your brain has to work hard to make this happen. When the sound signals from your ears are compromised, your brain has to work even harder to fill in the gaps. This extra effort can take its toll. In fact, studies have shown that, over time, hearing loss can lead to isolation and depression. That’s why it makes sense to take care of your hearing health the same way you care about the rest of your health: There’s a lot more riding on it than just your hearing. What happens when you have a hearing challenge? The natural relationship between your ears and brain is disrupted. This is why it takes so much more effort to follow what is being said and why you may feel so much more tired at the end of a
busy day. It’s your brain that hears - Not your ears. Your ears and your brain work together as a system, with your brain doing most of the heavy lifting. Give your brain exactly what it needs to hear. Your hearing is as unique as your fingerprint. And because no two are quite the same, no one else’s hearing profile is quite like yours. The right devices professionally selected and fit to your individual needs can: Be virtually invisible Allow you to hear in “3D” so you can follow conversations that come from different directions in a room. Automatically select the best directional mode giving you clearer more natural sound - even in difficult hearing situations. Wirelessly connect to your Cell phone, tablet, TV, and car Along with award-winning service, the Johns Creek Audiology and Hearing Aid Cen-
ter offers revolutionary pricing with initial costs often 30% to 40% less than typical because patients can choose to pay only for the hearing devices and not the 3-5 years of services “bundled” into the price. Complete diagnostic testing is provided along with tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo, and ear wax management. All major insurance plans are accepted, and no-interest finance plans are available. Contact Johns Creek Audiology at 770-814-1260 to schedule your life changing appointment. www.YourHearingLink.com

published at school or in the paper or having your artwork on display at the High Museum of Art,” Workman said. “In some of the schools, they treat some of the categories as a required assignment to do it for class.” But, candidly, he said Reflections provides an opportunity for students to express their creativity, which is why he wanted to help with the program. “I want to do the best and most that I can to see that everybody in the school has
the opportunity to participate and that we fairly judge the entries,” Workman said. “We’re here to award, but don’t forget all the children here, everyone who participated, is a winner because you won at the school and grade level or your art wouldn’t be here. To me, that’s important. This program has been around for many years and it’s always a very popular program. I think it’s wonderful.” For information on the Reflections program, visit forsyth.k12.ga.us/ Page/46277. PHOTOS BY DICK WORMAN

Transportation Summit spotlights upcoming projects ATLANTA — The Georgia American Council of Engineering Companies Georgia, the Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Transportation Alliance and Georgia Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2015 Georgia Transportation Summit Nov. 10 at the Georgia World Congress Center. The summit was attended by more than 700 of Georgia’s engineering, transportation and public policy leaders. GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry kicked-off the morning’s general session by sharing information on the department’s upcoming and future project plans. McMurry also stressed the significance of the Transportation Funding Act of 2015 and its impact in creating sustainable state funding for transportation projects. Meg Pirkle, GDOT’s chief engineer, also spoke on the importance of the new legislation and cited specific projects now in the pipeline due to the additional funds generated. U.S. Congressman Rob Woodall delivered the event’s keynote address. “For the first time in over a decade, Washington is on the verge of implementing long-
term legislation that provides the certainty our states, communities and job-creators need to move forward,” Woodall said. Additional general session panelists focused on the need for transit investment; infrastructure’s role in economic and community development; plans for the expansion of freight and commuter mobility across the state and future transportation technology. The general session concluded with the annual Georgia Partnership for Transportation Quality Preconstruction Design Awards Ceremony, which recognized nine of Georgia’s leading transportation projects for innovation and excellence. Marietta-based Heath & Lineback Engineers, Inc. took top honors as the Grand Award for its work on the first phase of the PATH400 project. Afternoon breakout sessions featured public policy, transportation and engineering leaders, including Georgia Senator Steve Gooch, Georgia Representative Christian Coomer, Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chairman Charlotte Nash as well as MARTA General Manager and CEO Keith Parker.
Milestones: Continued from Page 1 10 in the state, coming in at No. 10 with an average score of 89.90. Georgia Milestones assesses student learning along four levels of performance, compared to three, as was the case for the CRCT, according to gadoe.org. These designations aim to shift the focus away from just test scores, instead capturing the progression of students’ learning from beginning, developing, proficient and distinguished learners. Students in grades third to 12th began taking the test during the 2014-15 school year. “These results show a lower level of student proficiency than Georgians are used to seeing, but that does not mean Georgia students know less or that teachers are not doing a great job – it means they’ve been asked to clear a higher bar,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “Our previous assessment, the CRCT, set some of the lowest expectations for student proficiency in the nation, and that cannot continue. Georgia Milestones sets higher standards for our students and evens the playing field with the rest of the nation – and that’s essential if our students are going to succeed in college and their chosen careers, both of which are nationally competitive arenas. We will continue to increase our supports for both students and teachers to ensure this test is more meaningful for all involved.” Visit bit.ly/1MmvoQY for the schools’ scores. There will be three parent sessions to discuss Georgia Milestones: • Jan. 7, 2016: Otwell Middle School, 6:30 p.m. • Jan. 12, 2016: Piney Grove Middle School, 6:30 p.m. • Jan. 19, 2016: North Forsyth Middle School, 6:30 p.m.
Topics discussed spanned construction, transit, safety, project delivery improvement and a 2016 legislative preview. “The Georgia Transportation Summit has been successful for decades, but our partnership with the Georgia Transportation Alliance and Georgia Chamber has elevated this program to be the premier transportation event in Georgia,” said Michael Sullivan, president and CEO, ACEC Georgia. —Zenzele Price-Richardson
U.S. Congressman Rob Woodall keynoted the 2015 Georgia Transportation Summit, attended by more than 700 of Georgia’s engineering, transportation and public policy leaders.

Blotter: Continued from Page 2 at the thrift store, the woman said she was getting gas, then said she was picking up a beverage that spilled so she pulled over, then changed her story one more time to say she was donating items. The officer was unable to see any spilled beverage but did see a bicycle in the back seat with a price tag on it. The officer told her about the cameras in the parking lot and the woman admitted to taking the bike. No other items were taken. The woman was charged with loitering and prowling. The officer said he will check with Family Haven to see if they want to pursue charges for theft by taking. A second police report regarding the woman said she came back into the station to say her doughnuts had been eaten by cops after they towed her car. She then said it may have been the wrecker driver who ate them. The wrecker driver said he did not eat any of the doughnuts and the video and audio from her arrest did not show any of the officers eating her doughnuts. This report was closed due to no evidence showing that a theft occurred.
