ecember is the peak season for giftgiving, and many will spend the weeks leading up to Christmas or Hanukah scrambling from shop to shop, searching for that perfect gift. Vanessa Schepis, owner of Alpharetta’s The Red Hound, understands that people are looking to give their loved ones a unique present — something they can’t find in big box stores or online — and stocks her shop with gifts you won’t find anywhere else. The Red Hound’s inventory of home décor and gifts, from candles and bath goods, stemware to artwork and more, includes the work of more than 30 local artists and collections, like Houston Llew’s “Spiritiles.” And when you find that perfect gift, The Red Hound offers complementary gift wrapping. in Alpharetta City Center, the shop has been around for nearly two decades and Schepis has been the owner since 2013. The prime new location is helping Schepis reach new heights. “When I bought the store, I could envision what I wanted it to look like,” Schepis said. “I could imagine everything from the flooring to the light fixtures, and I could envision people wandering in. Now, that has come true.” Surrounded by restaurants, bars and other shops, The Red Hound has attracted more foot traffic and new customers. It’s one of the things Schepis loves about being in Alpharetta City Center. Another is that everything is owned locally, giving the downtown a friendly hometown feel, something the big box stores don't. All the big chain stores feel the same, nothing special to their decor or product lines. With the big chains, when you’re in one of their stores, you often can't tell if you’re in Alpharetta, Atlanta or Texas, Schepis said. “Here, everything has a unique feel,” she said. “When you come in, you’ll usually see me. I have kids that go to your schools, I've served on local PTA's, I’m a part of this community. By shopping at the City Center, you’re not just supporting local businesses, you’re also supporting many female-owned businesses. The Red Hound, Hemline, Never Enough Thyme, Core 57, Dress Up, Exquisite Living and Anna Bella are just a few of the many women-led businesses at Alpharetta’s core. “What used to be a small percentage of women in business, it now seems like everywhere I turn, there’s more and more,” Schepis said. The high percentage of women-led businesses makes for a supportive business community. Women tend to be better listeners, empathizers, consensus builders, she said. In practice, she said this means the Alpharetta City Center business owners are often looking out for one another and finding ways they can partner on events and share ideas. They share what shoppers are saying. “The better everyone else does, the better we do,” Schepis said. “The more people who visit the City Center, the more people who will stumble into our store. It’s a totally different feel from my old location. I'm really happy to be here!” For its part, Alpharetta offers a never-ending parade of events to attract shoppers to City Center. Just this month, the city will host its official holiday kickoff Dec. 6, with live music, photos with Santa and a tree lighting. The following week, the Alpharetta Chamber will host Sip, Shop and Stroll on Dec. 12. With all the holiday cheer, Schepis said it’s a special time to own a gift shop. “It warms my heart when I think about how many gifts we wrap and how much joy we bring to people during the season,” Schepis said. “So many gifts come from our small store.” ■ 8 | northsidewoman.com | december2019

oswell just got a little sweeter, thanks to a new bakery that bears the name of its owner and cookie decorator, Canita Allen. Located near the Roswell historic district, I Canita Cake is more than just a clever name – it’s a confection destination. With its fan base well-established prior to opening in May, I Canita Cake’s assortment of delicious treats satisfies a sweet tooth and always offers something unique to discover. If you’re in the mood for savory, a warm

ham and gouda or chorizo and pepper jack scone will hit the spot. A sweet craving calls for the maple-bacon cinnamon rolls or whoopie pies, Happy Sprinkle cookie sandwiches, gooey praline blondies, Majestic brownies made with Ghirardelli’s finest cocoa, or their newest menu item – cake bites in delectable flavors like Funfetti, dark pumpkin spice, coffee with espresso cream and red velvet. (Scones and cinnamon rolls are only available on Fridays and Saturdays). By far, their most popular confection is the signature chocolate chip cookie, which a

follower and fan described in a recent Facebook comment as, “The best chocolate chip cookie I have ever had.” The bakery’s second most popular treat is its pie bar, which comes in seasonal flavors like strawberry rhubarb, apple pie, sweet potato praline and pecan. For the holiday season, you can expect to find cookie cake Christmas trees and the signature baker’s choice decorated Christmas cookie assortment – available for $35/dozen, beginning the first week of December. Customers can see the latest weekly and monthly menu items or check out new

recipes they’re serving up in the bakery by following I Canita Cake on Facebook. Allen has a restaurant and catering background, but she inherited the baking gene from her mom and grandma. As child, she shared the kitchen and the mixing bowl with the family matriarch. When a friend asked her to make a Barbie Island Princess cake for a party 14 years ago, she posted the finished product on Facebook. It was the beginning of a successful and fulfilling custom cake and cookie baking career. By opening the retail space, Allen now has the opportunity to expand her menu and her business, showcase favored staple items and unique, seasonal products and test new recipe varieties with the public. The freedom to incorporate unique ingredients and play with flavor combinations with her lead baker Josie Spain, who also happens to have a background chemistry, is both fun and rewarding. “We have a ton of fun coming up with unique recipes that you just can’t get anywhere,” Allen said. The busy wife and mom has a staff of 11 that includes her husband Howard, who despite

having his own career, jumps in to make the dough for the bakers and helps run the retail section. Her oldest daughter, whom Allen describes as her “right hand,” mixes colors and makes icings for the cakes and cookies, and her youngest daughter, a Milton High School senior, also helps prep, bake, and helps decorate cakes when needed.. Allen admits that customer reactions to the final product keep her smiling these days. “One of my favorite things is when a kid brings in a picture that they’ve drawn for a custom cake or cookie cake that they want me to make and their reaction when the final product looks like their picture,” she said. The new year looks even sweeter for I Canita Cake. With plans to begin mini-cake and cookie decorating classes, the bakery is filling a niche in Roswell. “A customer made me feel so good when she came into the bakery recently and said, ‘Roswell has needed a bakery like this for so long – a bakery that offers unique baked goods that are consistently good,’” Allen said. “It makes me feel like we’re doing something right.” ■ december2019 | northsidewoman.com | 11

Historical fiction

Jessica Handler’s new novel, “The Magnetic Girl,” takes place in rural North Georgia two decades after the Civil War. Suspense thriller

“Watch What You Say” is the latest award-winning novel from Roswell’s George Weinstein. Weinstein, president of the Atlanta Writers Club, weaves the plot of his fifth book around a colorful phenomenon called chromesthesia, experienced by web-radio personality Bo Riccardi. "King of the Southern Diamond" by Bradsher Hayes spotlights Arthur Bradsher, nicknamed the “King of the Southern Diamond” by the legendary John Heisman after he started the 1904 Trinity College baseball season hurling 25 consecutive no-hit innings. “Bradsher had pinpoint control, movie-star looks and cum laude intelligence,” Hayes said. “One newspaper reported, ‘Every woman in the South wanted to marry him, and every baseball boss in the country wanted to own him.’” The creative nonfiction work depicts Bradsher’s escapades on the field and his romance with fellow Trinity student Lizzie Muse, written by a grandson about the grandfather he never met. “Coffee Hour in Flensburg: Stories of War and Peace, of Adventure and Love” by Erika Passantino, a retired art historian, is “a memoir, a love story and a tale of adventure, written by the only child of a German-American couple.” Detailing wars, migration and loss played out over three continents by a family who survives through strength and love, the Canton resident’s book “explores the questions and reasons surrounding a return to Germany in the early 1930s. “Beau’s Bayou Treasure” is the latest title from motherdaughter writing duo Rosalind and Maggie Bunn. Rosalind, a teacher at Marietta’s East Side Elementary School, is the author of seven children’s books. The title is the second for Maggie, 30. In their new release, Beau receives a treasure map from his grandfather to explore the bayou. He meets and talks with animals along the way, who tell him "There is treasure to be found” and “Keep rowing, Beau. I taught her to raise money in about five minutes. Smart tips to save money on Christmas By ALLISON BAINES Contributing Writer

t’s very easy to overspend going into the holiday season, when our spirits and attention focus on things like gift-giving and giving back to charity. To keep your budget happy, consider these tips before you shop. It will help to save money on your gifts this season. • Stick to a gift budget. I am a huge fan of establishing dollar limits for family members. The benefits are twofold; it’s easier to pick gifts if you must stay under a certain dollar amount, and it keeps all family members on a level playing field, no matter their income. Drawing names can aid in this as well. That way, you only have one family member on which to spend a lot of money, while the rest get smaller gifts. • Budget charitable giving. During the height of the giving season, it’s tempting to pay it forward to each and every charity you come across. This is not a bad thing at all, but before you know it, you could spend more money on charities than you do on gifts for your family. Set a budget at the outset of the holiday season to determine exactly how much you want to give to each 16 | northsidewoman.com | december2019

charity. Use rewards points. If it comes down to taking on credit card debt versus using rewards points you already have built up, use the points. It will make more sense in the long run and can act as a Christmas savings account you didn’t realize you had. • Go with a theme or product area. One of the ways we get into trouble is by wandering the whole store and frantically grabbing items off the shelves because it’s Christmas Eve and you haven’t bought enough gifts. Sound familiar? Consider sticking with a theme or product area. For example, some of my family members gave everyone kitchen-themed gifts a few years ago. It will be easier and cheaper to shop one area of the store at the last minute than aimlessly wandering. • Don’t buy for yourself. Do you ever walk into a store to Christmas shop and leave only with gifts for yourself? Me too. Make a deal this year to only buy gifts for others, and save the personal gifts for after Christmas. Festive holiday makeup trends

winkling lights, flickering candles and festive metallic decorations create feelings of celebration, and remind us of fond memories of past holidays. Be a part of the shine and shimmer. This holiday season, makeup is all about glamour and glitter. Local beauty experts agree that gold glittery eye shadow and false eyelashes are a must this season. “The holidays are a perfect time to step out of your comfort zone,” said makeup artist Deborah Fawaz, chief executive officer of DD Faces at www.ddfacesbydeborah.com. “Do not wear your everyday look to holiday parties. Take a risk. Be memorable!” Fawaz advises highlighting your face’s best feature. If you want your eyes to be dazzling this season, she suggests a smoky eye with glitter eyeshadow. If you have enjoyed decades of holiday cheer, use a navy or plum eye color instead of black for a softer effect. Always pair this look with a minimal lip. Red eyeliner on the upper lash line is also trending this holiday season. Look for colors such as burnt orange, cherry red or burgundy. The winged eyeliner is still popular. For a new twist, try royal blue liquid eyeliner instead of black. To highlight your lips this holiday season, Fawaz said matte lip colors in deep berry or red wine are very popular. For darker skin tones, use a matte cocoa lip color. For more seasoned celebrants, she suggests a waterproof lip liner for staying power, and applying lip gloss on the “kisser” for a juicier look. This season, Alexandra Gault, makeup

artist and esthetician at Aura Hair and Makeup in Sandy Springs, emphasizes a good skincare routine. “Makeup only looks as good as the skin underneath,” said Gault, who suggests using a heavier moisturizer in the winter. To achieve the look of glowing skin in the winter, she incorporates beauty oil into liquid foundation. The makeup goes on easier and looks smoother, she said Gault’s favorite holiday makeup product is the dark red glitter lip by Lip Kandy, a threestep kit. “I rock it every holiday season,” she said. “It looks festive and lasts all night. The glitter doesn’t transfer when I kiss someone. It doesn’t bleed into the creases above the lip. Every time I wear it, everyone from 17- to 70-year-olds ask me about my glittery red lips. “Do subtle eye makeup if you are rockin’ the red glitter lip,” she said. As a makeup artist for photoshoots, Gault also applies a bit of white or light-colored eye shadow in the inner corner of the eyes. For darker skin tones, she suggests using a bit of yellow eye shadow. This creates the illusion of more open-looking eyes in photographs. She also suggests adding a little more blush to your cheeks for holiday pictures. “It’s not so much for contour,” she said. “It’s to add color to cheeks that may seem paler in the winter.” Cumming resident Jocelyn Langford is a freelance makeup artist who specializes in special occasion makeup and is the owner of PrimroseHMUA.com. “Let yourself be a little more glamorous during the holiday,” Langford said. “Apply a bold eye or bold lip, not both. Pair shimmery gold eyeshadow with a smoky eye and nude

lip.”

A nude lip doesn’t mean a naked lip, she said. Use a color similar to your own natural lip color, not the color of your skin. Matte or shiny lipstick is up to you. “Warm up your face with blush,” she said. “For darker skin tones, gold shimmer looks incredible as a highlighter across cheeks and brow bone.” And don’t forget your eyebrows, she said. “Everyone should be filling in their eyebrows,” she said. “Most women have a few sparse areas in their eyebrows. Fill in these areas using an eyebrow product with a fine tip. Use small flicks of the wrist, creating little strokes that look like eyebrow hairs.” False eyelashes are key to completing the glamorous holiday look. Langford suggests demi-lashes placed on the outer corner of the upper lash line to add a little drama. Her tip for easier lash application is to wait 30 seconds after applying the glue to the lashes. It makes the lash glue tackier and stick more readily to the lash line. Remember to use mascara, even when using false eyelashes. Final tip Never sleep in your makeup. If you are too tired to do your nighttime routine after an extra-long night of holiday festivities, keep pre-moistened facial cleansing cloths in the nightstand and use them to cleanse your face. ■

Because of its Biblical name and Christian significance, Bethlehem is always the scene of special activity around Christmas time. A live nativity scene is held each year in the town square.

hat do you want for Christmas?” That’s the question that’ll soon be asked far and wide. Answers will likely include all the usual things — TV sets, cellphones, new sweaters, microwave ovens. Ho hum. But what if you could give something really unique — and really, really tied to Christmas? What if you could give a gift from Bethlehem itself? Well, thanks to the post office in a little Georgia town between Lawrenceville and Athens, you can do just that. You can give a postmark from Bethlehem. Located in Barrow County, the town of Bethlehem, Ga., (population 650, plus or minus) was incorporated in 1902. Historians note that the town was named for Bethlehem Methodist Church, established there in 1796. With a name like Bethlehem, it’s no surprise that this is one town that’s big on Christmas. The town’s website describes it as “The little town under the star,” a reference to the large star that stays up over the town square all year long. Many of the town’s street names reflect the Bethlehem theme too. You’ll find Joseph Street and Mary Avenue, for instance, and Angel Street and Shepherd Street and Wise Men Lane and more. City Hall is located on Manger Avenue, not to be confused with Manger Circle. That’s where Mayor Sandy McNab and other city leaders work to keep things running smoothly. I decided to go straight to the top and called the mayor to learn more about the town. After three rings, the phone was answered with a cheerful “Hello!” and for the next little while, I enjoyed talking with a mayor who

answers his own phone. Sandy has a been part of his community’s government for a good while now, having first served for 24 years on the city council before becoming mayor. He’s been in the mayor’s chair now for eight years. “We’re a little different than everybody else,” Sandy said. A few minutes later he added, “We try and take care of people.” We discussed various things, including the state of barbecue in the Bethlehem area. On that particular subject, by the way, Mayor Sandy mentioned Poor Boys Barbecue in Winder and Eddie’s Barbecue in Statham. Mayors tend to know these things, and it’s always good to have the inside story where barbecue is concerned. We talked about the town’s live nativity, too, held under the big star on on the town square on Dec. 22 and Dec. 23. “The big star stays up all the time,” he said, providing a focal point for the live nativity, sponsored each year by the First United Methodist Church of Bethlehem. The town sets up the nativity scene, and the church provides the people. Afterwards, according to the town’s website, “refreshments are enjoyed in City Hall.” Soon, though, we were talking about what may be Bethlehem’s biggest claim to fame — that coveted Bethlehem postmark on Christmas cards. “Yes, our post office is a busy place from about Thanksgiving on,” Sandy said. How busy? Bethlehem postmaster Calvin Mansfield is the expert on that one. The number of Bethlehem postmarks each Christmas is huge, he said. Last year, in 2018, his post office postmarked more than 120,000 pieces of Christmas mail. Calvin has been with the U.S. Postal Service for 27

years and has been postmaster at Bethlehem for three years — and that Bethlehem postmark has grown more popular each year. “We start the week after Thanksgiving,” he said, explaining that people bring their Christmas cards to the post office to get the special mark. In addition to the postmark, Calvin explained, “We have a stamp that says ‘Season’s Greetings from Bethlehem.’” In the background is a nativity scene. Post office patrons can use that stamp to further decorate their mailings. “We have people coming in from all over the state,” Calvin said. “Folks come from neighboring states too.” What if you can’t make it to Bethlehem? In that case, Calvin added, “we will do it for them.” He explained that some folks who can’t get to the post office in person will bundle up their stamped Christmas cards and send them to the Bethlehem post office for that special holiday postmark. (“Address the box to ‘Postmaster,’” he said.) Yes, it’s extra work, Calvin added. But you can tell from his voice that he doesn’t mind at all. “We get them done!” he said. So if you’re looking for something truly unique this holiday season, consider making the drive to Bethlehem to mail your Christmas cards. You’ll find the post office at 820 Christmas Avenue in this great little Georgia town where, in some sense or other, it really is Christmas all year long. ■

’Tis the season to be … stressed

he holiday season is known for many things: cheerful décor, music, holiday fun, religious observances and family gatherings, just to name a few. But this special time of year doesn’t only bring “Joy to the World.” For many of us, it also brings stress. Shopping, cooking, entertaining and juggling conflicting obligations can push anyone into the stress zone. In her wonderful book on sexuality, “Come as You Are,” Emily Nagoski identifies two kinds of people based on their sexual reactions to stress: red-liners and flat-liners. Nagoski says red-liners are people who want more sex in times of stress, as a stress-reliever, while flat-liners are people whose interest in sex disappears completely when they are stressed. Not surprisingly, these two types of people are often married to each other.

So, how to maintain a sexual relationship and avoid sparking conflict during the holidays? First, acknowledge that although flatliners are more common than red-liners (especially among women), wanting sex or not wanting sex are both perfectly normal and reasonable responses to stressful situations. There’s no reason to fight about different natural responses. Second, realize that it’s healthy for everyone to find a way to relax in times of stress, so be sure to build in some healthy relaxation into your holiday plans. If you can find a way to do that, both red-liners and flat-liners might find they are in the mood for some sexy times, too. ■

one of my poultry patients are ever likely to require a presidential pardon to avoid ending up on the holiday table. Most are kept for eggs and truly become pets. I see a lot of chickens and ducks, with a smattering of turkeys and guinea fowl. Many are aging hens with names like Fiona and Reese, who haven’t laid eggs in years. Chickens are entertaining, cute, have remarkably individual personalities and definitely have pet appeal. If a small backyard flock appeals to you, be certain to buy chicks from a reputable source that vaccinates for Marek’s disease, and be sure you comply with all laws and covenants in your area. According to world-renowned poultry expert David Bland, 70-80 percent of all chicken health problems are related to husbandry and management. Chickens require space to prevent crowding stress and disease concentration and transmission. Coops, which can be purchased anywhere from Walmart to Williams and Sonoma, should allow two to three square feet per bird. They should be well-ventilated to prevent build-up of ammonia gases from droppings, bacteria and viruses. Windows should be screened to prevent access of diseasecarrying rodents and wild birds. Shavings, straw, sawdust or rice hulls are soft absorbent beddings that provide insulation and cushioning to help prevent foot problems. Chickens have a hierarchy (pecking order), and sufficient feeding and watering stations, nest boxes and perches should be provided to allow the lowest status hen to have a place. Thorough cleaning and disinfection should be done frequently. Outdoor runs should be made predator-safe and prevent digging in or out. This can be accomplished by burying wire on both sides of a fence. In North Atlanta, wire or net may need to be placed over the run to discourage hawks and owls. Adequate watering stations should also be present in the yard. The appropriate feed for chicks from birth to six weeks old is a starter diet. From six weeks until they begin to lay eggs, hens should be fed a grower or pullet diet. During laying, they should be transitioned to a layer diet. Layer diets can be toxic to younger chickens due to very high levels of calcium and energy. Scratch feeds and corn, which chickens love, are imbalanced diets and should be fed sparingly. Chickens are avid foragers and will consume plants and insects in the run. They will also eat household scraps eagerly as a part of the diet. A source of roughage, such as alfalfa or rolled oats, should be provided to promote a healthy gut. Egg production is influenced by multiple factors. If they are gaining weight and the length of daylight is increasing, hens will begin to lay at 17 to 24 weeks. In commercial settings, they can

produce up to 300 eggs per year. Longer hours of light exposure promotes egg production. Artificial light in the coop (14-16 hours per day) can be used to stimulate egg production. Hens should be allowed time each year during which the period of light is shortened and they can rest from making eggs and molt. Eggs should be collected frequently enough that they are still warm. They should be washed immediately to prevent contaminants on the shell from entering the egg’s interior. This helps decrease the possibility of transmitting diseases like listeria, mycobacterium, salmonella and campylobacter to humans. Chickens with white earlobes lay white eggs; those with brown earlobes lay brown eggs. Easter Eggers (Americana, Araucana and hybrids) lay blue to green eggs. In a May 2019 report, the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation examined causes of death in backyard chickens and found that 42 percent of chickens died of cancer. Of these, 63 percent had infection with cancercausing viruses (Marek’s disease or leukosis/ sarcoma virus). Another 42 percent had bacterial disease generally of the respiratory or gastrointestinal systems. Parasites, both gastrointestinal and skin, were the cause of 28 percent mortality. Viruses, other than Marek’s and leukosis, were involved in 7 percent of death losses. Of the chickens with parasitic bacterial and viral disease, 69 percent had infection with two or more organisms. These co-infections cause challenges in both diagnostics and treatment. Most commonly, I treat poultry for reproductive issues (egg yolk peritonitis, cancer and ovarian cysts), respiratory infections, diarrhea and parasites. Diagnostic testing and treatment are definitely possible. Sadly, many chickens come to the veterinarian late in disease, when options may be limited. All procedures and tests in live chickens, even those done at the Georgia Diagnostic Lab, are attendant with cost. If a chicken dies and owners are willing to take the body themselves to the state lab, a necropsy (animal autopsy) and all further testing are typically free of charge. This is often the most beneficial course of action for your flock’s health. Poultry, even when kept as pets, are regarded by the federal government as food animals. This limits drugs that can be used legally and imposes mandatory medication withdrawal times. The doctors at Loving Hands Animal Clinic are available to see all of your poultry pets. inecrest Academy sophomore Kate O’Rourke knew from age 3 that she wanted to be a singer, and with her recent original debut album release, this teenager is on her way to fulfilling that dream. In 2017, O’Rourke’s vocal talents had already taken her to an Atlanta Braves game, where she sang the national anthem before the crowd. It was so well received that she was invited back last summer to sing the anthem again. Then in October, O’Rourke released her first extended play album, “I’m Good with Me,” at The Vinyl at Center Stage Theater in Atlanta. “My album release is the most exciting thing that is happening in my life at the moment,” O’Rourke said. “I never imagined that my dream would become a reality. This experience has helped me mature and realize the possibilities in life if you persevere and give 100 percent in everything you do.” Produced by BSE Productions, O’Rourke’s album contains four songs and was released with a music video featuring her parents and brother Patrick, along with Pinecrest teachers Denise Jordan and Katherine Tropea, and Pinecrest parent Margaret Boudreaux. One of the songs on the album, “Just Don’t,” features vocals by Pinecrest students and alumni, including sophomores Natalie Jennings and Aryn Spain, and alumni Anne Marie Doxtader and Maddie Ettmueller. “Music is the food for the soul,” O’Rourke said. “It can be so moving and emotional. I like the fact that I have the ability to either make

someone cry or make someone smile… All four of my songs have to do with what I was going through in my life at the time. They mainly resonate with teenagers.” But anyone of any age can still enjoy her music, O’Rourke said. “I made my music personal for me,” she said. “However, I also made it so that anyone can somehow relate to some part of the songs. I wanted my songs to be raw and true. I wanted to pull at heartstrings. I wanted to put a smile on someone’s face. I wanted to make someone dance for joy.” O’Rourke has trained with Erin McGraw, musical theater teacher at Pinecrest Academy, and currently trains with Amy Little of United Music Studios. “Working with an emerging young artist like Kate O’Rourke is a thrill for our team,” Little said. “Kate has an incredible natural gift as a vocalist, and she’s always willing to grow, stretch and collaborate… From the beginning, she had a clear focus in direction of style, topic and vibe for her music. Kate’s debut EP is fun, sassy, personal and powerful. We are so excited for the world to hear her voice and her message.” O’Rourke said that while she would love to continue making albums, she knows it can be a difficult career path. She is currently planning to go to college to study nursing and minor in music. “It all depends on where life takes me,” O’Rourke said. “I can be certain, however, that music will always be a part of my life.” O’Rourke’s album is out now on all platforms. Your pap smear is abnormal…now what? By DR. ANNIE KIM, MD, FACOG

ervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent, with regular screening tests and follow-up. There are currently two screening tests that can help prevent cervical cancer or detect it early. The Pap smear looks for precancerous changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if not treated appropriately. The HPV test detects the human papillomavirus that can cause these cellular changes. The Pap smear is recommended for all women between the ages of 21 and 65 years old, and this test can be done in your doctor’s office. If your Pap smear is normal, then routine follow-up is recommended as recommended by your doctor. An abnormal Pap smear is one in which the laboratory interprets the cellular changes to be different from those normally seen on a healthy cervix. Although an abnormal test result can be worrisome, it does not necessarily mean you have cervical cancer. Of the 3 million women who receive an abnormal result from a Pap smear each year, only about 10,000 are actually cases of cervical cancer. There are a few conditions that might cause an abnormal Pap smear result, including HPV, which is the most common cause. HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection, and most sexually active individuals have been exposed to at last one of the more than 100 known strains of HPV. Other sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea and chlamydia, as well as vaginal inflammation from bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection can also cause changes on your Pap smear. If you have an abnormal Pap smear, your doctor will probably ask you to come back for a follow-up appointment for a procedure called a colposcopy. Colposcopy is an outpatient procedure where your doctor takes a closer look at the cervix using a special instrument called a colposcope, which combines a bright light and magnifying lens. If abnormal cells are seen, then a biopsy is performed and sent to the lab to determine whether these cells are cancerous or precancerous. The type of cells that are found on biopsy will dictate the treatment. Moderate to severe precancerous cells need to be removed by procedures such as conization or loop excision, but if the biopsy is completely normal, then more frequent Pap smears would be recommended. The most important thing to know about an abnormal Pap smear is that as long as you follow-up with all of the recommended testing, you are not likely to develop cervical cancer. Therefore, it is crucial to be proactive about your health and schedule well-woman visits with your gynecologist every year. Modern OBGYN has three convenient office locations. Albedo & Altitude: What you need to know for winter sun safety

hat is the safest time to be outdoors? It turns out that this is not as easy a question to answer as you might think, and part of the reason is something called “albedo.” The term albedo is defined as the percent of DR. TAYLOR sunlight that is reflected off a surface. Fishermen have higher rates of skin cancer than our average outdoorsmen because of sun not only reaching them from above but also because sun bounces off the water and strikes their skin from below. We often say that this gives them a “double dose” of radiation and sun damage. But is the damage really double? Albedo, the percent of light bouncing off a surface, varies by a number of factors including the type of surface the sunlight is hitting and the angle the sun is at relative to the surface. For example, when the sun is at angles of 40 degrees or higher in the sky relative to the horizon, the albedo of water is fairly constant at around 5%, meaning that only 5% of the sun is bouncing up and

potentially hitting you. As the sun drops below 40 degrees, the albedo of water increases dramatically with about 50% of sunlight bouncing off of water when the sun is at an angle of ten degrees and almost 100% of sunlight reflecting off the water when the sun is just above the horizon at an angle of zero degrees. For many latitudes in the northern hemisphere in the winter months, the sun spends all its time below 40 degrees, so a large amount of light is reflecting off surfaces at all times. In Atlanta on Christmas, the solar elevation angle only reaches 32 degrees at noon. Snow is a different beast all together. We love snow because it is pretty and sparkly… but are those sparkles in fact sinister? (Cue alarming music now). If you are an avid skier who doesn’t want skin cancer, it is useful to know that ice has a higher albedo than water, and snow has an even higher albedo than ice.

In fact, snow reflects as much as 90 percent of solar radiation. Some of the worst sun burns that I have ever seen have come after ski trips. We might not think about sun damage in winter months figuring that the sun is less intense. However, many ski trips are in late spring at low latitudes and high elevations, so the snow persists even though the sun is now high in the sky. When it comes to skiing, you really can receive a double dose of UV radiation due to albedo and elevation. The general rule of thumb is that with every 3000 feet increase in elevation, UV radiation increases by 10%. So what is the safest time to be outdoors? The dermatologist would say that it is safest to ski between 6pm and 6am. The orthopedic surgeon might disagree. The real answer is to protect your skin from light from above and below with proper clothing and sunscreen. Have fun this winter! This reduces treatment ambiguity. The process for undergoing a CBCT x-ray is surprisingly simple. The patient stands upright as the x-ray machine rotates around their head producing a three dimensional (3-D) image that allows the dental professional to diagnose the problem one section at a time. Radiation exposure from CBCT is up to 10 times less than that incurred from medical CT scanning, which exposes a patient to a dose of approximately 400 to 1000 µSv. How does this compare to other forms of radiation? The average effective dose from background radiation is about 3 mSv per year. The adult effective dose from a CT exam of the abdomen is roughly equivalent to the adult effective dose from roughly 400 chest X-rays. CBCT units delivering the lowest doses are nearly equivalent to the dose of the panoramic exam, allowing dental professionals to benefit from the power of 3-D while limiting the risk associated with radiation exposure. By comparison, 2-D images show only the length and breadth of the anatomy with distortion. CBCT adds depth, thus giving the clinician multiplanar views of the volume.
