Four caught for credit card fraud ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Four people were arrested Dec. 10 for allegedly trying to use fake credit cards at the Best Buy on North Point Drive.

Employees said three men and a woman were all trying to use fake cards to buy items. Jonesha Z. Arnold, 19, of Decatur, had a credit card denied when she tried to buy two computers. The card came

All four were arrested for credit card forgery. Diggs, a convicted felon, was found with a handgun in his pocket and was also charged with felon in possession of a firearm.

Would-be thief rides MARTA ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Using MARTA as a getaway device is not the smartest of moves when trying to escape police.

Employees of the Marshall’s store on North Point Parkway told police a man tried to leave the store with a bag full of sweaters Dec. 9. When he was confronted by staff, the suspect allegedly threatened them with a knife with a red handle and fled the store.

Police found Cedric Lamar Jackson, 47, of Chamblee, at a nearby MARTA bus stop, identified through physical description and because he was allegedly breathing heavily, as if he had recently run. He was in possession of a knife with a red handle as well as several new bottles of perfume, for which he would not give receipts or say where they came from.

Videos, cameras taken from Walmart MILTON, Ga. – Two people were arrested Dec. 8 after allegedly trying to steal dozens of DVDs and cameras from the Windward Walmart.

Store employees told police that two men ran out of the store after they were confronted about possible theft. One man was seen driving away in a silver Grand Prix with New York tags.

Police found such a car at the Windward and Ga. 9 traffic light. Inside were three people.

The driver, Jalen R. Shelton, 20, of Atlanta, was identified as one of the alleged thieves.

The second alleged thief, whom Shelton named as “DJ Randy Third” was not found. Several cameras and 45 DVDs were found in the car, all in their Walmart packaging, along with an open bottle of wine.

Shelton was arrested for theft by shoplifting and driving with an open container of alcohol. When reviewing security footage, one of the car’s

Blotter: Missing boy, father found dead

ROSWELL, Ga. – What began as a search for a missing boy ended late Friday morning, Dec. 20, after police found the body of a man and a boy in the woods near where the child was last seen.

Four-year-old Jesus Dominguez was reported missing Dec. 19.

His father was suspected of kidnapping him. Both are believed to be the bodies that were found.

Police responded to an Old Holcomb Bridge Way home at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 19 and found a woman unresponsive.

“We found the mother in the bedroom brutally beaten,” said Roswell Police Spokeswoman Lisa Holland. Police are not releasing her name; however she is still in North Fulton Hospital in critical condition.

It was discovered the woman had a 4-year-old son who was unaccounted for, Jesus Dominguez. It is believed the father, Carlos Alberto Dominguez, 33, took

Mid-morning Friday, the teams found two bodies – a man and a child – in the woods only a half-mile away.

Holland said it appeared to be a murder-suicide.

Final confirmation on the identity of the bodies rests with the county coroner.

MILTON, Ga. – A Dunbrody Drive resident reported $2,055 worth of jewelry stolen Dec. 8.

The victim told police she had hardwood floors installed in the days before the jewels were reported missing. She suspects one of the workers.

The stolen goods included a Swarovski watch with rectangle face, Swarovski “Tonight” necklace and pendant, Swarovski crystal hoop earrings and a white gold diamond ring with four rows of diamonds. The jewels were in a blue Swarovski box, which was also taken.

At about 11 p.m. Dec. 10, deputies were dispatched to Texaco, 740 Atlanta Highway, because of an armed robbery.

When deputies arrived, the employee told them she was sitting behind the counter when a man, who looked about 30 years old, came in wearing a light blue ski mask, a dark hoodie and blue jeans.

He then pulled out an automatic firearm and demanded money from the cash register.

The employee took out the cash and placed it into a plastic bag. She gave him the bag and he demanded she move to a storage room in the back of the building.

She said he raised his gun and directed her to stay in the storage room. The armed robber fled the gas station on foot.

The employee said she did not know how much money the robber took.

Thief nabbed, found with pills ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A Duluth man was arrested Dec. 8 after allegedly trying to steal a jacket and was found to have dozens of pills on him illegally.

Police were called to the Macy’s store in North Point Mall where employees said they saw Rashad Charles Conner, 22, of Duluth, walk behind a sales counter and take a

hooded jacket. He walked to the exit while allegedly ripping off the tags and security sensors.

Police arrested Conner for the theft and, while searching him, found a matchbox containing 41 pills of various kinds. Conner had allegedly taken some prior to his arrest.

While he contended he needed them for personal use, officers arrested him for possession of drugs with the intent to distribute.

$17K in lawn equipment stolen CUMMING, Ga. — Someone entered a business and stole about $17,600 in lawn and construction equipment, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report.

On Dec. 7, an employee of Forsyth Exterminating, 1107 Atlanta Highway, told deputies he arrived at work at 8 a.m. while two crews were getting their equipment ready. The crew members told him their truck was open and their backpack blowers and weedeaters were missing. The employee said he looked around and saw the $14,000 Bobcat and its trailer missing. The generator was taken from the outbuilding.

Deputies said all the entrances were not forced because they were left open.

MILTON, Ga. — Milton City Council approved in a 5 to 2 vote to rezone a 9-acre agricultural lot on the northeast corner of Bethany Bend and Cogburn Road for the development of 27 single-family homes.

On Dec. 16, the rezoning was approved with several conditions. Several Milton and Alpharetta residents told councilmembers the development was too dense and needs to be taken “back to the drawing board.”

“This model is a good compromise between developers and citizens with one exception, the density,” said Milton resident Laura Rencher. “It’s just too much.”

Over the years, the council has received applications to transform the agricultural lot into a church, then, senior facility and homes, and now a single-family home subdivision.

The council had to extend

the public hearing portion of the meeting to hear all four voices in support and 13 voices in opposition.

Residents said they want to see the land developed, but not if it is going to devalue their homes and the Milton standards.

“It just flies in the face of what I thought was one of the principles for the founding of the city of Milton and part of the justification of not wanting to become just another element of North Fulton County,” said Milton resident Roger Cubler.

“It seems to me that it’s all about the money as opposed to what the city claims is an underlying objective.”

Community Development Director Kathleen Field said the developer originally wanted 28 units, but was talked down to 27 in order to build the park, buffers and fencing requested in earlier meetings.

Councilmember Bill Lusk motioned to approve the homes, and Councilmember Matt Kunz seconded it.

Councilmember Rick Mohrig and Councilmember Burt Hewitt were opposed.

“Four or five years ago, we passed a sewer map, and this lot wasn’t included on it,” Hewitt said. “I supported that map in the past, and when there have been others that have come forward, I haven’t supported those.

“For that reason, I won’t support this one either, and I do think it’s a little too dense,” he said.

Milton to see housing boom in 2014 Grapples with population, development growth

By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@northfulton.com MILTON, Ga. – Anyone driving through Milton’s back roads may have seen an unusual amount of building activity.

According to the city, this construction will continue and expand in the coming year.

According to numbers provided by Kathleen Field, Milton’s community development director, there are 896 new homes either under review, under construction or seeking rezoning.

Most of the properties seeking rezoning are along Milton’s southern edge, especially Ga. 9 These numbers for new homes to be completed in 2014

are triple 2013’s numbers. In all of this year, there were 279 residential permits given. That number is in itself nearly three times the number of permits given in 2010 (103).

With these new homes, the city expects the population to jump from 34,588 this year up to 37,008 next year, an increase of nearly 2,500 people.

“It’s because of the depression we had,” said Field. “There has been a pent-up demand.”

People want to come to Milton, she said, and now they have the chance.

This should come as no surprise. Milton is frequently touted as a rural, restful community of horse farms and quiet country roads. It has one

of the highest median home prices in the Atlanta area.

Milton was named “best quality of life” in Georgia and ninth highest in the Southeast by the Business Journals’ On Numbers Survey.

“This kind of honor just fuels the desire of people wanting to move here, as we all have chosen to do so at some point,” wrote Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood in a recent letter to the community.

However, the city cannot simply close its borders to all newcomers, nor can it forbid residents selling their land for new development. The trick is finding a way to make sure the developments coming in conform to what Milton wants to be in the future. With all the open space replaced with single family homes, what happens to that “rural” feel that drew people in the first place?

Part of the problem, said Lockwood, was that properties that meet all the legal requirements do not have to go through the same public scrutiny or come before the City Council. If land is allowed to have 50 homes built on it, it can. And the builder does not need to tell his neighbors about it.

Field says there is an array of options to help mitigate the issues. The city could require setbacks from the road to be

increased, limiting the views of endless houses, replacing that view with trees and shrubs.

Conservation subdivisions are another option. Developers would set aside a portion of their land as green space. That green space could be required to be at the entrance of a neighborhood.

There are no conservation subdivisions in Milton.

The transfer of development rights is also an option. This gives developers the chance to trade density in one area of the city for another. Instead of building 60 homes on Birmingham Highway, they might be able to build apartments along Ga. 9, saving the rural parcel.

The issue with conservation subdivisions and the transfer of development rights options is they are voluntary. The city cannot force builders to use them.

Field said the city needs to find ways to better promote and encourage developers to use these options.

The Apple Pancake: Our Apple Pancakes are a great

example of the quality and preparation that goes into all our breakfast courses:

We peel and slice fresh, tart and tangy Granny Smith apples. The apples are placed in an eight inch skillet and lightly sautéed in clarified butter. Next, the egg based German batter is added from a batch that was made fresh that morning. The skillet is then placed in a 200 degree oven for approximately 45 minutes. At this temperature the German batter will solidify, but will not bake. Then the skillet is removed from the oven and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, the pancake is flipped over and baked in a 450 degree oven. At this point the German batter will rise in the skillet as it bakes and the cinnamon sugar mixture on the bottom begins to caramelize.

After approximately 15 minutes of bake time The Apple Pancake is flipped back over onto a plate, and served. The Apple Pancake is very large when it comes out of the oven, but after it is served, it will shrink on your plate right before your eyes as it cools. Even though it takes over an hour to prepare one of these pancakes, we are always baking one, so it should not be much more than 10 to 15 minutes before you can enjoy your fresh Apple Pancake after it is ordered.

“But they were a jumping off place, too,” he said. “Often, it was an Irish pub like Sorley’s in New York that put up newly arrived immigrants and gave them a job and a room until they could launch themselves into America.”

Meyers explores the richness of life these pubs bring into a community that is unique to the Irish pub alone.

And then there are the recipes that make an Irish pub distinct as well. With each richly made photograph comes the personal story of each pub, shaped and shaping the communities in which they sit.

But really, an Irish pub in Honolulu? Wallace says there is not one, but two, and they are on opposite corners near the city’s Chinatown.

MILTON, Ga. – The new book on Irish pubs by local author/ photographer Robert Meyers has been much anticipated, but only now has become available locally because of ice storms in the Midwest.

“Irish Pubs in America: History, Lore and Recipes” came about as an idea by Meyers and friend Ron Wallace to explore the phenomenon of Irish pubs and their effect on American culture.

That led to their sojourn from Boston to Honolulu visiting more than 100 pubs, which were culled down to 52 in the book.

“These pubs were a stopping off place for communities,” Meyers said. “They stopped off on their way home from work, after athletic events, weddings and funerals – all of the events of their lives.

And often, they were the only cheerful place they had.

Milton Library gets a name Construction starts early 2014

By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@northfulton.com MILTON, Ga. – 2013 was the year Milton found a name for its forthcoming public library, to be located at the corner of Mayfield Road and Charlotte Drive, in Crabapple.

The property was chosen in part because of its proximity to several schools and its road visibility. It will be the city’s only library.

Milton’s 25,000-square-foot building, to be placed on the old Dinsmore Farm property, is part of 10 new or renovated libraries that were approved

in a 2008 regional referendum worth $275 million.

The library has since received plenty of community support. A “Friends of the Milton Library� group has formed, to help raise money for the library and galvanize support for it. A $20,000 donation was made to this group to help move one of the historic barns on the property to save it from demolition.

A group of residents formed a naming committee this year and settled on “Milton Library� as the official name.

Construction on the Milton Library is expected to start in early 2014 and take about a year.

Along with the Milton library, construction on Alpharetta’s new library should be started in early 2014. East Roswell also got a new library, on which construction has begun.

Freedom Park is the newest park in Milton, opened on Veterans Day and dedicated to those who have served their country.

Milton’s parks grow in 2013

By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@northfulton.com MILTON, Ga. – Milton’s parks program laid a lot of groundwork in 2013, which should lead to 2014 being a banner year for the city. “We’ve done quite a bit of work,� said Parks and Recreation Director Jim Cregge.

A new park, Freedom Park, opened on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Local veterans raised nine flags representing the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, POW/MIA, the state of Georgia, the United States and the city of Milton. Exercise equipment is also scattered along a path in the park.

The city and the school system recommitted to share park space at Friendship Community Park, next to Northwestern Middle School, for a further five years.

Big things have been happening at Bell Memorial Park, as it was

approved for expansion in October.

A new building will be constructed featuring concessions, scorekeeping equipment and restrooms. A one-mile walking path will also be built. Four new baseball fields and two rectangular multi-purpose fields will also be built.

Construction will begin in 2014, after the baseball season, and will take about a year. The park will be shut for this time.

Cregge said the entire park will be rebuilt. “It’s going to be spectacular,�

Cregge said.

As far as sports programs are concerned, this year proved there is a huge demand in the city. Cregge said last year, boys’ lacrosse was offered for the first time and had less than 50 applicants. This year, there were 190.

Residents will see plenty of movement in the parks and their programs in 2014.

Milton’s animal preserve owner wins expansion, dies

By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@northfulton.com MILTON, Ga. – Dean Riopelle, owner of an exotic animal preserve on Hopewell Road won his case with the city to both accept his use of land but also to expand it. However he died in September before he could accomplish his goals.

Riopelle’s operation came into the light last year when he decided he wanted to expand the preserve he had operated for more than a dozen years.

Housing mostly primates, he cared for them all, giving many of them names like pets.

Neighbors voiced their opposition to his plans, claiming the animals were loud and posed an environmental hazard, being near a body of water.

Riopelle won his case with the city in late March, albeit with restrictions on what and how many animals he could keep. In September, Riopelle slipped into a coma after suffering a heart attack. He died a week later. He was 53 years old.

He was a football coach with the Alpharetta Youth Association and friends say was actively involved in helping children with cancer. He was also the owner of The Masquerade music venue in downtown Atlanta.

Dean Riopelle had hoped to expand his animal preserve, housing more exotic animals off Hopewell Road. He died unexpectedly before he could accomplish this.

Milton’s RISPA shines at national competition MILTON, Ga. – One of Milton’s own performing arts troupes swept the competition on a national stage in July. The RISPA School for Performing Arts, located on Ga. 9 in Milton, has performed for eight years. After sweeping this year’s Atlanta competition, they moved on to the national challenge.

At the Access Broadway national competition in Hershey, Pa., the group of more than 100 performers faced off against 2,500 finalists who were the best of the best.

RISPA came away with dozens of individual and group awards and enough points to take home the best over-all Broadway Cup for Best Performing Arts School.

This was RISPA’s first time at nationals, and many of the performance schools had been there before, so RISPA was the new kid on the block.

“But by the second day, people started to ask about us and wanted to know who we were,” said owner Georgina Louchiey.

Players of Year not among top recruiting targets Efforts of Grauss, Biondich lauded by coaches

By MIKE BLUM news@northfulton.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The 2012 North Fulton high school football Players of the Year were both heavily recruited by elite Division I schools and spent their freshman seasons playing extensively for a pair of teams in the SEC. The 2013 North Fulton high school football Players of the Year are not being heavily recruited by Division I schools, with one of them more likely to play lacrosse in college after he graduates in 2015.

You might not find Northview receiver Matty Biondich or Alpharetta linebacker Bryce Grauss near the top of any football recruiting lists, but the two players were hard to miss when playing for their respective teams this past season.

Biondich and Grauss are the North Fulton Players of the Year, with Grauss earning defensive honors and Biondich the area’s top offensive player.

Grauss, a senior, was the

Defensive Player of the Year in Region 6-AAAAAA and spearheaded the defensive effort that led the Raiders to an undefeated region record and a victory in the first round of the state playoffs.

Although he was slowed by an injury late in the season, Grauss continued to play defense from sideline to sideline, making tackles all over the field, causing fumbles, intercepting passes and generally causing havoc for opposing offenses.

“If what you’re looking for is production and an impact on the game, I don’t think there’s been a better football player in North Fulton the last five years,” Alpharetta coach Jason Dukes said of Grauss.

In the Raiders’ playoff victory over South Gwinnett, Grauss did a little bit of everything despite having to come out of the game more than once due to a knee problem.

He had multiple quarterback sacks, forced a fumble, blocked a punt, made a long interception return and simply would not allow Alpharetta to lose, with the Raiders coming away with the first playoff victory in school history.

“He made everything go,”

Dukes said of the impact Grauss had on the Alpharetta defense.

Despite his efforts during the season, Grauss has not been a target of recruiters at the highest levels of college football, unlike 2012 Defensive Player of the Year Carl Lawson of Milton, who played extensively at defensive end as a freshman at Auburn.

“But as far as actual impact on a game – causing fumbles, pressuring the quarterback, making tackles in the backfield, you’d be hard pressed to find any defensive player more productive than Bryce was,” Dukes said.

At least Grauss (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) looks like a football player.

Biondich is all of 5-foot-7, 155 pounds and is likely to play lacrosse in college at West Point, having already committed to the U.S. Military Academy. Army, which rarely throws out of its triple option offense, would not have much use for Biondich’s football skills, which are impressive despite his slight stature.

Milton High School lacrosse hosts Run for Cover 5K MILTON, Ga. – The Milton High School boys’ lacrosse program is presenting its sixth annual Run for Cover 5K run. This year’s race will start at the Milton High School parking lot, 13205 Birmingham Highway in Milton, at noon Jan. 11, 2014.

The Run for Cover 5K benefits North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC), a nonprofit agency dedicated to preventing homelessness of individuals residing north of the Chattahoochee River in Fulton County.

NFCC assists families with basic needs such as food, rent and utilities, clothing and adult education classes during short-term emergencies. All race participants are asked to bring an article of winter clothing and/or non-perishable food items for donation to the NFCC. “Our Run for Cover is a wonderful event that rallies our community to help those

that are in need,” said Tom Dell, Milton boys’ lacrosse coach and assistant athletic director.

Last year’s event saw 225 runners who donated more than 60 winter coats and several bags of food items for NFCC. Plans for this year’s race look to exceed these numbers.

Milton District promotes new Eagle Scouts

MILTON, Ga. — The Milton Boy Scout District, which covers the cities of Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Milton, announced its newest Eagle Scouts, who passed their Board of Review on Dec. 4.

Leland Grass’s project was the design and construction of an enclosed octagon wooden structure for the purpose of playing the game Ga-ga at Camp All-America at Perimeter Church.

He also constructed a metal instruction board listing the rules to play Ga-ga.

Preston Krah’s project was the design and construction of an 8-foot-tall pergola with a swing for Camp AllAmerica at Perimeter Church.

Nathaniel Davis’s project was the design and construction of a three-sided wooden shelter for a herd of horses at Save the Horses Rescue Center.

Joshua Gautier’s project was the design of a collection of food items for the North Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry. Although his goal was 1,000 food items, he surpassed it and collected 1,100 food items.

construction of a nature trail for Camp All-America at Perimeter Church.

Duncan Hensley, of Troop 2000, was sponsored by Johns Creek Presbyterian Church. For his Eagle project, Hensley landscaped and enhanced a butterfly garden at Dolvin Elementary School.

He removed the existing landscaping of a tree and a few bushes and then replaced it with a paved seating area, a tree in the middle of the area and a plant bed. He also put in a paved walkway lined with hedges up to the seating area.

Darren Craddock, of Troop 69, was sponsored by Alpharetta First United Methodist Church. His project was the design, construction and renovation of the Ocee Elementary School wildlife area. Craddock’s project included replacing the pump for the fishpond, planting new shrubs and plants and the construction of a bench.

Colin Wahl, of Troop 10, was sponsored by St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. His project was the improvement of the picnic area at Sloppy Floyd State Park. Wahl designed and built an 8-foot picnic table and a new fire ring.

James Barnard, of Troop 69, was sponsored by Alpharetta First United Methodist Church. His project was the design and construction of a hand railing on a set of stairs on the St. Aidan’s nature trail.

Alpharetta development vestige of prominent families Ruth’s Farm part of Spence, Wills, Peevy history

By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – At the corner of Mayfield and Bethany roads, on the border of Alpharetta and Milton, sits a 22-acre parcel of land, one of the few remaining large parcels in the area. Sitting just outside downtown Crabapple, it will soon become a neighborhood called “Ruth’s Farm,” but it was once farmland belonging to one of North Fulton’s prominent families.

Ruth’s Farm will feature 49 homes with one entrance on Bethany Road. The houses to be built inside will be all brick and start at about half a million dollars each. It is owned

by KM Homes and developed by the Providence Group.

“I got them to name it after [Ruth],” said Jack Peevy, the only son of Ruth Spence Peevy Wills, the former owner of the land. “The houses will look nice. They will be all-brick with three-car garages. Whatever is on that pasture land will reflect my mother.”

Ruth died in 2007.

The land belonged to Peevy, a retired colonel with the Army, and descendent of the

Peevy and Spence families.

Both have a rich history in the North Fulton area. Peevy sold the family land while keeping two historic family houses on it preserved. Peevy’s grandparents, Bascom and Oma Spence, purchased the farm in 1918, he said. Scotch-Irish descendants, they ended a spate of progressively moving south, from Forsyth County to Bethany Bend to Mayfield Road. The house long predated their purchase, however.

“Parts of one house date back before the Civil War,” said Connie Mashburn, a local historian. “If you look under the house, some of the beams are tree trunks, with the bark still on them. I don’t know how far back that type of construction goes.” Both houses on the land were donated by Peevy to the Alpharetta Historical Society in 2012. They sit on a few acres along Mayfield Road. All the land around them will be developed with houses.

The Spence family has been in the area since the Civil War. “My great-grandfather went into the Civil War and was shot in the jaw,” Peevy said. “He was sent home to die. That was the practice at the time. But

The house eventually passed down to Bascom and Oma’s daughter, Ruth Spence.

Ruth Spence Peevy Wills married Hoye Peevy in the 1930s. He was a Fulton County deputy marshal.

“Like everybody her age, she got married right out of high school,” Peevy said. “She went to work at the Fulton County Courthouse.”

From there, her career took her into education. She became a secretary at a school in Sandy Springs where they encouraged her to go to college and where she eventually

earned several degrees.

“She went ‘cafeteria-style,’” Peevy said. “She took a course here and a course there.”

She and Peevy divorced in the 1950s. Ruth then married Ed Wills, the nephew of Quilliam “Quilly” Wills, the mayor of Alpharetta, who sold what is now Wills Park to the county.

Ed ran a successful cattle feed store on North Main Street.

One of Ruth’s relatives, Bill Spence, was a prominent lawyer in the area, head of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and also mayor of Alpharetta. He won a race against Quilly Wills, which surely provided interesting

“He called Quilly a damned Republican, and he beat him,” laughed Peevy. “That was probably the last time a Democrat beat a Republican up here.”

At the time, Democrats were considered the conservative party. Now, the Spences and Willses have all died out or moved off. That is why he sold off the family land. Money from the sale of the land went to the University of North Georgia, where he says he wants to build a military museum.

“I felt that preservation was more important than money,” Peevy said. “I’m not done with doing good deeds.”

MILTON, Ga. — The Cambridge High School community was in shock Monday, Dec. 16, after learning of the suicide of one of their own.

Reagan Austin Beene was a popular 14-year-old freshman, described as funny and sensitive by family and friends.

Beene’s friends called him a prankster who loved to listen to country music, especially Carrie Underwood and Toby STUDIO 7 Keith. In the morning of Dec. 16, half of the student population at Cambridge High walked to Stonecreek Church and many checked out after that.

“It’s a day of remembrance and grief,” Smith said, after checking out of school and spending Monday afternoon at Alpharetta North Park.

Smith and other members of the school’s lacrosse team said they needed to “blow off some steam.”

Cambridge Principal Ed Spurka sent word out to parents over the weekend about the loss.

“We express our deepest sympathy to the Beene family; our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of grief,” he wrote. “Tonight and in the coming days, I encourage you to talk to your children about their feelings and experiences and encourage them to seek support from our counseling staff if appropriate.” Social media sites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter were filled with many posted remembrances and sympathy to the family.

“The biggest smiles hold the most pain, and he had one hell of a smile. RIP Reagan Beene,” tweeted fellow Cambridge student Remy Johnston.

In addition to his mother, Reagan is survived by his father, Jeffry A. Beene; older sisters, Anderson “Ace,” 20, and Mallory, 17, and younger brother, Travis, a seventhgrader at Hopewell Middle School.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 3 p.m. at Stonecreek Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Stonecreek Church, 13540 Ga. 9 N., Milton, Ga. 30004 in the name of “Reagan Austin Beene.”

Teen party broken up by police

By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@northfulton.com MILTON, Ga. – Police broke up a teen party Dec. 13 that included nearly a dozen 14- and 15-year-olds who were allegedly drinking alcohol. The boy who held the party, Reagan Beene, was found dead the following day.

According to Milton Police, they received a call of a party on South Heron Run Court, in the Crooked Creek neighborhood. The caller said teens were drinking and smoking marijuana in the front yard.

When the responding officer arrived, he wrote in his report that there was no evidence of a party. As he was walking back to his car to leave, he overheard a teen talking on her cellphone. Approaching her, he said he saw a can of beer on the ground beside her. She allegedly admitted others were inside the home, drinking.

The officer reported seeing several teens closing blinds and windows in an attempt to avoid the police, even going so far as to jump out a bedroom window and flee across the nearby golf course.

Ten teens were found in the house, along with “numerous empty cans of beer.”

Milton Police Spokesman Capt. Shawn McCarty said officers have discretion of how they handle incidents like this.

“It depends on the situation,” McCarty said, adding that in this case, “all the children were 14 and 15 so the officer felt the most appropriate course was to write a ticket and release them to their parents.”

The Milton rumor mill took over after the bust, with teens saying kids were kept in “paddy wagons” or arrested. McCarty said that was not true.

“We don’t own any paddy wagons,” he said.

Nine of the kids were kept in the house until they could be turned over to their parents. Beene was turned over to his older sister. All teens were cited for underage consumption.

Alpharetta mulls convention center in Avalon Retail 90% leased

By HATCHER HURD and JONATHAN COPSEY hatcher@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A new wrinkle in the $600 million Avalon mixed-use project going up at Ga. 400 and Old Milton Parkway could include a fourstar hotel and a 47,000-square-foot convention center.

Alpharetta and North American Properties are in discussions to partner in building the convention center pending a study on costs.

Phase one is already on schedule for an October 2014 grand opening that includes nearly 400,000 square feet of retail, 250 multi-family units, 101 single-family units and 83,000 square feet of office space.

Mark Toro, managing partner at North American Properties and the developer of Avalon, announced the project is 90 percent leased with many leading national retailers and restaurateurs having signed on.

North American Properties is the same real estate company that turned around Midtown’s Atlantic Station. In 2011, it paid $22.8 million for what was then called Prospect Park, an ambitious suburban luxury shopping center and mixed-use development that went south when the recession hit. North American called the new project Avalon.

Alpharetta had issued in March an “indication of interest,” asking for ideas and proposals for a convention center.

Avalon was chosen by the city as the better of the two responders.

The idea for a hotel and convention center has been pushed by Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle, and Avalon was always on the city’s short list of sites.

The City Council took the first steps in partnering with Avalon at its meeting last week.

The city has anted up $60,000 for a predevelopment design and cost analysis, with North American picking up the rest of the cost. It is estimated the convention center would cost in the neighborhood of $25 million.

The city and the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau will split the cost of the city’s end.

Belle Isle said if the convention center could be brought in for that amount, the city could pay for the revenue bonds to build it through an increase in the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau tax on hotel beds.

“That is the only real potential source to pay for those bonds that this council would consider is through an increase in the hotel-motel tax,” Belle Isle said.

It is conservatively estimated that moving the tax from 6 percent to 8 percent would raise more than $24 million.

The proposal at Avalon calls for 300 hotel rooms in a full-service hotel along with up to 47,000 square feet of convention space, but the agreement is not binding.

Comparing sales year-over-year for the month of November unit sales dropped a modest 4 percent in North Fulton, but went down a whopping 22 percent in Forsyth County.

The seasonal shift to lower unit sales was expected but it is interesting that the numbers varied so much between the two areas.

The good news though is that sales prices are still showing a solid increase over the same period last year.

The average sales price in Forsyth County is up 12 percent over last November to $277,116 and up 13 percent in North Fulton to $411,218.

Additionally, the average days-onmarket is down 35 percent in Forsyth County and 38 percent in North Fulton.

So, on average homes are selling for more than last year and selling more quickly.

Tax changes and expiring tax breaks to be aware of before end of 2013 Throughout the year, I often discuss taxes with my clients – including the tax changes that affect them as small business owners and the expiring tax breaks that they face on their individual returns. Here are some important changes to keep in mind.

Tax changes for corporations and sole proprietors in 2013: Health care tax credit. Small businesses that employ fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees may qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit. To do so, the employees’ average annual wages cannot be more than $50,000, and the business must pay at least half the premiums for employees’ single health insurance coverage. The maximum credit is equal to 35 percent of the premiums paid by the business. The credit can be claimed in tax years 2010 through 2013 and for any two years after that.

Hiring qualified veterans. Businesses that hire veterans who have served our country can receive certain tax credits. In 2013, the maximum credit for hiring qualified veterans at a for-profit business is $9,600 per worker, while tax-exempt organizations can claim a $6,240 credit per worker.

Deduction for equipment purchases. The Section 179 expense deduction for equipment purchases for 2013 is $500,000 of the first $2 million of certain business property placed in service during the year. For qualified property that exceeds the threshold amount, the bonus depreciation is 50 percent.

IRA distributions for charitable contributions. One way for those who are 70.5 years or older to reduce income and take advantage of other tax provisions is to donate their mandatory minimum IRA distributions to charity, up to $100,000.

Small business stock. Now is an ideal time to invest in small businesses. For stock that is purchased before Dec. 31 and held for five years, 100 percent of the capital gains can be excluded.

Electric vehicles. A tax credit of up to $7,500 is available for fourwheel electric vehicles, ranging from Ford to Fiat to BMW and more. It is important to note that the tax credit for electric vehicles do not technically expire in 2013 because it phases out after 200,000 vehicles are built by the manufacturer.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell city leaders welcomed the expansion of 64 new suites at the Tapestry House assisted living facility.

A groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the occasion took place Friday, Dec. 13 at 9212 Nesbit Ferry Road in Alpharetta.

Milton L. Cruz, owner of Insignia Senior Living, was in attendance along with Dean Peacock, principal of Peacock Construction.

Invited guests included Maria Rose of the Johns Creek Chamber of Chamber, Roswell city leaders, Julie Vickers, executive director of the Tapestry

House, Zee Jennings, executive director of Tapestry House, and Tracie Kolody, executive director of Carlton Senior Living in Sandy Springs.

All three of these senior living facilities are owned by Milton L. Cruz.

The health care real estate and investment group last year opened the first assisted living and memory care facility in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The latest project, a 64-suite addition to Tapestry House Senior Living and Memory Care will offer studio and one-bedroom apartments with assisted living amenities as well as medication manage-

ment.

The facility will also accommodate a 30-day rehab stepdown program from hospital discharge.

Construction for the expansion is expected to be completed by the end of September 2014.

You never know what others are going through “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind.”

Someone posted that on my Facebook wall, and I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since – not that I necessarily want to.

When I first saw it, I immediately started processing how true it was – how many times the idea hit close to home.

I thought of the kids in our community who took their own lives this year and the pain endured by the friends and family of those kids. I thought of the principal and the teachers who taught at the schools where those kids went and the herculean efforts they made to prevent more tragedies. And I imagined the indescribable pain and frustration when despite their efforts, it continued. I thought how hard it must have been and how brave and heroic it was when those administrators showed up at school – or back home every day – and somehow managed to slip on masks of positive attitudes, smiles and engagement with those around them.

I thought of the people I know who lost jobs, who lost careers in mid-stream, out of the blue and who didn’t know what to do. I thought about what it felt like to pretend that everything was OK, that their pride really wasn’t hurt when they stayed unemployed or when they took jobs that maybe their kids would have qualified for. I thought about the frustration and emptiness they must have felt when they couldn’t provide for their family. I imagined one of them in front of me at a traffic light a bit distracted and not noticing that the light was green – and my hand moving toward the horn.

I’ve been on the side of musty mountains. And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard rain gonna fall.

When I saw that Facebook post, I thought about my kids growing up in this Internet age where all personal information is public and where all secrets are found, and where kids are surrounded by pressure and stress from corners of their lives to which we parents are oblivious. I imagined how hard it is to be a kid today – or a parent, and I wondered if the short tempers, the ugly comments, the seemingly self-centered behavior that seems to permeate our lives today might somehow be related.

Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind.

pay bills and still try to have a life. I thought of the ministers carrying the burdens of their congregations silently on their shoulders and working more hours than they would ever admit to and never complaining. I thought of those holding two or three jobs to try to make ends meet and how that might look on their faces when they were in line at the grocery, in the bleachers at the ball game, sitting in a restaurant or watching others complaining about the difficulty of finding a court or chatting on their phones at the red light in a hurry to get to lunch at a local watering hole.

Be kind. Walk in their shoes. At least try.

One of the hardest things for a parent to teach a child is the concept of empathy.

Being the center of attention is how we are born and what

is hardwired into us, and it does not necessarily go away as one grows older. It has to be unlearned.

One of the best ways is to be exposed to someone who has unlearned it. Children’s and adults’ behavior is learned; it is modeled. That is, we learn by example.

My daughter Amelia has been babysitting recently for a single mom. The woman holds down a modest-paying job and is raising two young foster children. She recently took on a third foster child because, I suspect, no one would take the child because she is older. The mom never stops. Between her job and trying to raise those kids, I don’t know how she finds time to sleep. But Amelia is not babysitting for this woman to give her a break. She is babysitting for her because the woman is organizing – on her own – a mom’s night out for all the other foster moms so they can have a break. She is coordinating babysitters. She is finding a place and a way to entertain and “sit” all these foster kids, all in her “spare” time and with her “extra money.”

This mom is fighting a battle that few would be aware

But here is the rub: “she” is everyone. She doesn’t wear a label that says she deserves or needs your understanding or support. You just have to have

faith that “she” needs you – and you need her.

And, no, my daughter is not charging her. In the case with our family, I have probably learned more by modeling my children – and my wife – than anything else during my 59 years on this planet.

Be kind, and even when you can’t be kind, be kind anyway. At the end of the day, making someone else’s world a little better in some way is making everyone’s world a little better – including your own.

Northview coach Chad Davenport needed only one word to describe the kind of season Biondich had for the Titans.

“Unbelievable,” Davenport said. “He does not drop anything.”

Biondich, a junior, compiled a highlight reel’s worth of amazing catches throughout the season, finishing with 75 receptions for 1,225 yards and 13 touchdowns, with his yardage total second in the state and first in AAAAA. Even though opposing defenses knew the ball was going to Biondich in key situations, he managed to make one big catch after another, frequently down the field against double

coverage.

“He runs very good pass routes, has great speed and tremendous concentration,” Davenport said. “And he’s a smart receiver. He knows how to break off the route if he has to and make an adjustment.”

Biondich had at least one touchdown reception in each of the Titans’ last nine games, and had at least 100 yards receiving seven times in 2013.

Biondich also had a punt return for a touchdown and handled the punting duties for Northview, kicking a field goal in his only attempt.

With both Biondich and quarterback D.J. Pearson back next season, the Titans’ opponents in 6-AAAAAA will have a new pass threat duo to deal with after the graduation of all the region’s collection of standout receivers from the 2013 season.

The Titans, who faced playoff teams in all four of their non-region games, ended with a 9-4 record, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to state finalist Washington County.
