Business expo draws crowds By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Business owners from throughout Alpharetta turned out Aug. 29 to fill the Marriott Hotel on Windward Parkway for the Alpharetta Business Association’s inaugural business expo. Seventy vendors each had booths and spent the day mingling with their peers,

trading business cards and making connections. One vendor, Kathleen Hughes, runs the local franchise of “Juice Plus,” a business that takes fruits and vegetables and turns them into easy-to-eat, healthy pills. “I heard about this from the Alpharetta Farmers Market,” Hughes said. “I’m making some good contacts here and I’ll be sure to come back next year.”

Gerry Burge, owner of Allenbrooke Interiors, had her booth decorated with dozens of paintings and photos. “This is the first one I’ve been to,” she said. “I’m getting lots of good feedback.” For more about the Alpharetta Business Association, visit them online at www.alpharettabusinessassociation.com.

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – After a week of qualifying, North Fulton’s races are now set. All incumbents have signed up to return next year, although only a few races are contested. In Alpharetta, all three incumbents are running for their seats - Donald Mitchell, Mike Kennedy and Chris Owens – with one race contended. Jumping back into the ring is former Alpharetta Council member Doug DeRito. He qualified Wednesday, Aug. 28 to run against incumbent Donald Mitchell. Mitchell is filling in DeRito’s unexpired term. DeRito had to give up his seat two years ago to make a bid for mayor. Now, after some time off, DeRito wants to get back into the mix. “I’m looking forward to getting back in,” DeRito said. “I’ve been in politics since I was 18 years old. It’s something I love to do.” During his two years off, DeRito has focused on family and his work, he said. But now he wants to sit again in the seat he held for 10 years.

“It’s a good time to get back into the fray,” he said. Mitchell, for his part, said he was excited for the change ORLANS to win a term that would be his own. “I am very excited about this upcoming campaign,” Mitchell said. “In the past two years, the City of Alpharetta has built a substantial amount of momentum and I am proud to have been a vital part of this effort. My campaign is all about moving this momentum forward. I am confident that our message of economic development, downtown revitalization and community improvement will continue to resonate with the voters and I’m looking forward to getting back out on the campaign trail. “Considering our Council has accomplished so much in the past two years, I
