Flight field draws thousands Model airplane enthusiasts show support for club FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Georgia Model Aviators’ open house on Sept. 28 was a huge success, organizers say. The Georgia Model Aviators (GMA) in Forsyth County, which meets on a 65-acre Forsyth County property, has a membership of about 300 pilots from across North Atlanta. The airfield is located at 8250 Old Federal Road, Ball

Ground, in north Forsyth. “We welcomed several thousand visitors, many stayed all day long,” said David Roberts, a lead event organizer and GMA training coordinator. “The flight line was constantly active, so guests got an eyeful.” The event also raised about $3,000 for the Independence Fund to help buy a specialized wheelchair for a United States veteran severely injured in the line of duty. Drug awareness event calls on parents Goal to educate public, ‘help stop drug use, drive it out of community’ ALDO NAHED aldo@forsythherald.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Most children are pretty savvy about drugs, it’s the parents who are sometimes clueless about use and addiction. That’s the thinking behind a community drug awareness event taking place at 7 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center, 3410 Ronald Reagan

Boulevard. Community leaders will hold the free event aimed at parents. “We started talking about how many kids were on drugs and parents who didn’t have a clue and didn’t know which way to go,” said Cindy Jones Mills, a Forsyth County commissioner who is helping to organize the event. “We want to better educate the public and parents in particular, and

CUMMING, Ga. — A man called a woman and said if she did not pay $2,000 for a missed federal jury summons, she would be sent to jail, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. A woman in the 6000 block of Hendrix Road told deputies a man who identified himself as “Tom Wilson from the Forsyth County Courthouse” called her Sept. 26. He told her she had missed a federal jury summons and

Deputies chase down fleeing suspect CUMMING, Ga. — A resident in the 4000 block of Chestnut Springs Court reported two suspicious men in the area at about 6:30 a.m. Sept. 27. When Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found the two men sitting on a curb in the subdivision. One man lived in the subdivision and said they had just gotten back from playing cards all night. He gave the deputies a Georgia State Correctional Release identification card. The other man said he did not have ID and gave the deputies information that did not register in their database. While deputies reentered the man’s information, he stood up and ran into the backyard of a home. Deputies chased and followed the man as he jumped over a 6-foot fence. A deputy fell down a shallow embankment behind the fence and the suspect got

had a warrant for her arrest. He said she had three hours to settle the warrant by paying a $2,000 fine. If she did not, then he would send Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office deputies to her house and take her to jail where she would remain until her Oct. 23 court date. He said she could only pay with a debit card or a Green Dot card, and could not hang up the phone until the money was sent.

She said she went to two banks to transfer money and then to a convenience store to buy four Green Dot cards. All the while, he stayed on the phone with her. He said she could not tell anyone who she was on the phone with and that she needed to drive carefully. He said if she were pulled over, she would get arrested for the warrant. After she read the numbers off from the back of the Green

Dot cards, he said she had to report to him the next day. She called her family once she got off the phone with the caller and they said she had been scammed. The woman told deputies she had been struggling financially after her husband passed away and she suffered a broken leg. She said she was terrified and believed if she was arrested that she would lose everything.

away. Deputies began to clear the area, but were unable to relocate the suspect. Soon after, a 911 call came in about a man running around a home in the Copper Creek subdivision. Deputies found Xavier Sethea, 21, hiding under a porch and arrested him. Sethea was charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer and obstruction of criminal investigation, both misdemeanors, and was taken to Forsyth County Detention Center.

Shoplifter urinates in fitting room CUMMING, Ga. — A woman was caught shoplifting and admitted to urinating in the fitting rooms and on herself, according to a Cumming Police incident report. The lost prevention officer of Kohl’s, 1615 Market Place Boulevard, told officers a woman took six jewelry items and two fragrance items worth $454 and shoved them in her purse Sept. 27. The employee said she then stumbled into the fitting room where she urinated. She left the fitting room and continued to stumble around as others noticed her behavior. She attempted to leave the store without paying, but the

Liquor store burglarized, $1.7K stolen CUMMING, Ga. — Someone broke into a liquor store and stole $1,700 in cash and 15 cartons of cigarettes, according to a Cumming Police incident report. On Oct. 5, officers were dispatched to Beverage Depot, 2536 Atlanta Road, in reference to an alarm. When officers arrived, they saw the back door open and the power had been cut off. While clearing the store, officers said a ceiling tile was missing and the camera wires had been cut. Officers checked the roof and saw several boards missing from the gable area. Video surveillance did not show anyone, but the time stamp showed at about 1:40 a.m. the power cut off. The owner inventoried the office and said $1,700 in cash and 15 cartons of cigarettes were missing. Also, four bottles of high-end liquor may have

Angry neighbor fights back CUMMING, Ga. — After an ongoing dispute regarding damaged property, a man allegedly trespassed in his neighbor’s yard and broke off tree limbs, according to a Forsyth Sheriff’s incident report. A woman in the 9000 block of Preserve Trail told deputies her neighbor jumped the fence of her property and broke a limb from a tree planted in her yard on Oct. 3. The woman said her neighbor was upset that her landscape company cut down some plants that were allegedly in his property without permission. Two witnesses told deputies the neighbor cursed at the woman, and because she had damaged his property, he was going to damage hers, the report said. He allegedly broke about three limbs from her 2-yearold Redbud tree valued at about $200. When deputies asked the neighbor about the incident, he denied entering her property and damaging the tree limbs. Deputies told the neighbor not to take matter into his hands and call the sheriff’s office should another dispute arise.

Bowman said a Forsyth County Fire Department firefighter was injured Oct. 7 in an apartment fire, 225 Nancy Lane in Cumming, which killed a 78-year-old wheelchairbound man, identified as Allen Dean Boyd. Boyd was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. The Forsyth County firefighter was treated and released for smoke inhalation at Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The fire in Cumming was deemed accidental. adult males – 22 and 27 years old – have also died because of heroin overdose in the last year. “I think our timing is perfect,” Mills said. “We are doing something. We are not trying to sweep it under the rug and pretend that it’s not there. We want to bring light to it.” In the week of Oct. 21 through Oct. 25, schools throughout the county will take part in the Red Ribbon Week campaign that aims to educate youth about drugs prevention. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. School officials say they will do their part, but parents with children in the fourth grade and up should plan to attend the event on Nov. 5. “It’s affecting younger and younger kids,” Mills said. “I think this is way too important for the community… drugs are evolving so quickly.”

The new animal shelter will be located on County Way off Ga. 400 in north Forsyth County.

Animal shelter receives $20K boost for cat cages Humane Society, Friends of Animal Shelter donate $10K each By ALDO NAHED aldo@forsythherald.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The county animal shelter has received a $20,000 boost from the community that will add cat cages to the new facility. On Oct. 8, Forsyth Deputy County Manager Tim Merritt told commissioners two different groups donated $10,000 each that will enable

the county to add 24 cat cages back into the budget and into the project. The Humane Society of Forsyth County donated $10,000, and the newly formed Friends of Forsyth County Animal Shelter donated another $10,000. The new infusion increased the budget for the animal shelter. The new animal shelter will

be located on County Way off Ga. 400 in northern Forsyth County and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2014. It is estimated to cost the county about $690,000 the first year to operate the shelter, which includes a new truck. The approximately 13,700-square-foot facility broke ground in March and was designed by RKS Green

Consulting and Shelterplanners.com. The general contractor for the project is CRS Building Corporation. The new shelter will replace the current arrangement in which the county contracts out shelter operations located at 1904 Old Atlanta Road. Since the 1980s, the county has had an agreement with Dr. Lanier and Annette Orr, who have provided animal shelter services for the community. Forsyth County’s new

animal shelter construction is funded by the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII program. Heading the project is the Animal Control and Shelter Advisory Committee, a group formed to help ensure the project was undertaken in the most effective and efficient manner possible. The animal shelter committee will hold their next meeting Oct. 16.

Girl Scouts awarded high honors By CAITLYN WALTERS walters@northfulton.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Several honorable leaders of tomorrow walked away Oct. 6 with the highest awards Girl Scouts can offer. Forsyth South Service Unit held a Court of Awards ceremony at Sharon Elementary School, 3595 Old Atlanta Road in Suwanee, for members in six Girl Scout troops who received the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. “We hope that all the girls here will continue to have a great time, and they will learn so many things,” said Troop 1389 Leader Kathy Howard. “We hope that you stick with Girl Scouts as long as you can and go for the gold.” Howard said Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta will hold a more formal ceremony at the Fox Theater in March for the Gold Award recipients, but invited those Gold Award winners back to talk about their projects to younger Scouts. “These older girls are fantastic role models for the younger girls,” Howard said. “They should all be proud of their efforts working within Forsyth County to help make the world a better place.”

Bronze, Silver and Gold Award winners stand together to conclude the ceremony. This year, Girl Scouts awarded Amanda Smith of South Forsyth High School its highest scouting honor, the Gold Award. Smith researched, designed and installed a butterfly garden at Fideles Christian School. The school plans to use it as an outdoor classroom and incorporate it into the science curriculum for students. “Learning to not take rejection as defect is easier said than done,” Smith said about her project. “But if I am

standing here today, there is definitely proof that even I can get over rejection and make something happen.” Girls Scouts honored the Silver Award to seventh- and eighth-graders from two troops. Clara Kovacevich of Troop 14222 partnered with the Forsyth County Humane Society by collecting old lines, working at pet adoptions and socializing with the cats. Makenzi Petrin of Troop 13839 hosted a holiday cel-

ebration for children from Supporting Adoption and Foster Families Together (SAFFT) House where the kids made crafts and cards for their foster families. Aubrey Howard, Tara Patterson and Catherine Anne Organ of Troops 14222 and 13839 created an etiquette program for young girls teaching good manners through the use of puppetry, songs and crafts. Troops 13730 and 10806 won the Bronze Award, which is typically for fourth- and

fifth-graders. Troop 13730 created a Fairy Trail at Sawnee Mountain Preserve to encourage young children to use their imagination, enjoy nature and get exercise. Troop 10806 created a read-along audio library paired with copies of the books that they donated to a literacy program. The program participants will use this library to read bedtime stories to their children.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Residents who have been holding off on registering their boat might not want to hold out much longer. Georgia boat owners with expired registrations are encouraged to renew their boat decals before Oct. 24, when a new state law adding a $10 late fee for registration renewal after expiration will be implemented. “The 2013 legislature passed a new law that encourages timely registration,” said Dan Forster, director of the Wildlife Resources Division. “Often boat owners put off registration until just before July Fourth or other major summer holidays, and the resulting rush creates a backlog for all wishing to renew their registrations and for persons trying to register a new boat to use for the holidays. “This new law will help encourage boat owners to register throughout the year, resulting in better service for all,” Forster said. Boat registrations are good for three years and expire on the last day of the owner’s birth month in the third year of registration. The new law adds a $10 fee if the registration renewal is mailed or completed by

telephone or using the online registration after the expiration date. This requirement will be enforced beginning Oct. 24. In an effort to notify boat owners about their expiring registrations, the Wildlife Resources Division mails a renewal notice the first week of the month before expiration (approximately 55 days in advance). Registration renewal notices mailed Sept. 1 for Oct. 31 boat expirations will have a notice about the new late fee. Transferring ownership of a vessel? This law additionally allows new owners of used boats that have an existing Georgia registration to receive three full

years of registration at transfer and eliminates the transfer fee. This transfer provision also begins Oct. 24. “This new transfer provision giving three full years of registration at transfer will save money for most boat owners,” said Forster. How to renew, transfer or register a new boat New boat registrations and transfers of ownership for boats with existing Georgia registrations may be done by mail or telephone (1-800-3662661). The late fee does not apply to ownership transfers or new Georgia boat registrations. Boat registration renewals may be returned with renewal form by mail, or done by tele-

phone at 1-800-366-2661 or by visiting the online sales site at www.GoBoatGeorgia.com/ boating/registration. Owners of Georgia boats must notify DNR within 15 days if their address changes from that shown on their boat registration card, or if they sell their boat. Address changes and notification of boat sale may be done by calling 1-800366-2661. Boat owners can also change their address by logging into their customer account at www.GoBoatGeorgia. com/boating/registration. For more, visit www. GoBoatGeorgia.com/boating/ registration. -Aldo Nahed

Ernst & Young volunteers work on improving Sawnee Mountain Preserve trails.

Volunteers at Sawnee Mountain Preserve help repair trails FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — About 18 volunteers from several metro Atlanta offices and divisions of Ernst & Young spent several hours on Friday, Sept. 20 volunteering on the Indian Seats Trail at Forsyth County’s Sawnee Mountain Preserve. The volunteers helped

reroute and build approximately 500 feet of new trail and rehabilitate another 1,000 feet of trail. Due to the heavy rains this summer, several sections of the trail needed to be either rerouted and rebuilt or rehabilitated. This work was planned to

be undertaken later this year, but the volunteers enabled it to be completed much sooner. “Now our trail visitors have an improved trail route through that area,” said Matthew Pate, outdoor division manager. “The volunteers’ assistance was greatly appreciated.” —McKenzie Cunningham

Central’s ‘Macbeth’ promises scary good time

Maggie Baxter, a freshman at Lambert High School, is enjoying her first year of fencing and says her favorite part is the adrenaline rush she gets at tournaments.

Fencing tournament at Centennial draws hundreds JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Centennial High School hosted the Georgia High School Fencing League Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 28. The six-hour event hosted about 100 fencers from eight different schools. The schools represented at the tournament included Pope, Johns Creek, Centennial, Roswell, Lambert, South Forsyth, Pinecrest and Milton high schools. “I enjoy the fact that fencing is more of a thinking sport, and I like that it’s

very individual,” said Jordan Hirsch, a freshman at Milton High School “You don’t have to depend on anyone but yourself.” Shivani Bhagat, a sophomore at South Forsyth, added that the atmosphere and people at fencing tournaments are interesting and kind. “One of my favorite parts about fencing is getting to meet the awesome competitors,” Bhagat said. In addition to the 7 p.m. performance on Halloween, the show also runs at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24 and 6:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25 at the school, 520 Tribble Gap Road. Although the play typically runs more than two hours, Central’s production is condensed to a one-act, onehour show. The school plans to perform this at the Georgia

People are attracted to this community because of its diversity in spacious home designs, upscale interiors, low-maintenance care and the walkable lifestyle it provides” KELLY KENTON FINK, vice president of marketing and online sales

Business booms for homebuilder Providence Group sees Fulton, Forsyth as prime locations By CAROLYN ASPENSON carolyn@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Atlanta natives Pete and Warren Jolly have been busy building homes across both Fulton and Forsyth counties. Their business, the Providence Group of Georgia, was ranked by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as the sixth largest builder in the state and has doubled sales since last year. “This year has been an amazing year of growth for us with over 400 sales so far,” said Kelly Kenton Fink, vice president of marketing and online sales. “Our success has been due to many factors including our wide variety of community locations, home designs, styles and price ranges,” Fink said. The Providence Group builds both single-family homes and garden homes along with townhomes and condos at prices ranging from the $100,000s to $600,000s. “We offer something for everyone,” Fink said. Fink said Atlanta has seen a significant shift in homebuyer demand this year. “The market has improved and people are buying homes again,” she said. One of the keys to the builder’s success, Fink said, is their stock of spec homes and

presale options. “Many builders in Atlanta could only offer presale options,” Fink said. “Combined with our key locations, we’ve seen great success.” Fink said the builder has more than 10 upcoming communities planned to open for sales within the next three months to a year. “Some of our communities are in the early stages of development and some, like Crabapple Crossroads in Milton, are almost finished,” she said. Fink said that community has sold quickly. “People are attracted to this community because of its diversity in spacious home designs, upscale interiors, low-maintenance care and the walkable lifestyle it provides,” she said. Fink said the builder has an additional community in the works for Milton. “The Reserve at Providence is an upcoming gated community with home sites on over an acre of land,” she said. Ruth’s Farm, one of the builder’s Alpharetta communities at the intersection of Mayfield and Bethany roads, is still in the development stage with plans to begin home construction later this year. “All home designs were developed for Ruth’s Farm specifically,” Fink said.

The Providence Group will build homes similar to these in Alpharetta and Forsyth County. She said the community will offer homes with up to five bedrooms and some will have optional third-level bonus rooms and additional space for media or exercise rooms. Their other Alpharetta location, Bethany Commons, only has four home sites left. The final phase of their Johns Creek townhome community, Arlington Pointe, is under construction and presales are available. Bellmoore Park, a luxury home community in Johns Creek will be a gated community featuring an amenities-focused lifestyle with over 600 homes. “Development on this community is planned to begin later this year with actual home construction sometime in mid-2014,” Fink said. Fink said the Roswell townhome community, New Haven Walk, only has two homes left.

She said that their newest Roswell community, Nesbit Reserve, would soon offer luxury homes with new home designs. The Providence Group also has single-family homes, garden homes and townhomes in Jamestown, located in Forsyth County, and will be a major player in the 400-home com-

munity Traditions to be built on Ga. 9 and Majors Road next year. “We are very excited to have so many wonderful locations in the area to offer homebuyers,” Fink said. For more information on the Providence Group, visit www.theprovidencegroup.com.

Gwinnett Tech readying Alpharetta campus By CAITLIN WAGENSEIL caitlin@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Gwinnett Technical College will soon begin construction on a campus in Alpharetta that officials say could accommodate up to 10,000 students when completely developed. The 25-acre North Fulton campus will be at the intersection of Old Milton Parkway and Ga. 400, across from the Avalon development. David McCulloch, vice president of economic development for Gwinnett Tech, said that while the construction schedule is still being decided, it’s expected to begin in mid-2014. McCulloch said that there’s no doubt the addition of the new campus will generate positive impact and begin a ripple of positive effects for the community. “The presence of a highly skilled workforce attracts new business and industry, and supports the expansion of current enterprises — an additional economic impact to the community and residents alike,” McCulloch said. The college’s operations spending and payroll will also be a plus to the area, McCulloch added. And the addition of a technical college campus in Alpharetta will bring many benefits to students in the area. “For individual students, the new campus will make college and career

Gwinnett Tech also offers dual enrollment options for high school students, which McCulloch said has been eagerly embraced in North Fulton. While initial course offerings for the new campus are still being determined, officials expect programs to

4 tips to surviving a home inspection It can be very stressful to have an inspector come in and tell you everything that is wrong with your home. A good inspector will set expectations with the buyers, and sellers if present, to point out that every item on the list isn’t necessarily a major point of concern. But prior to getting the inspection report, there are several things a seller can do to help “survive” the ordeal:

Robert Strader

Local Realtor Keller Williams Realty

Set your expectations in advance It’s the inspector’s job to find things wrong. If your home is more than a few years old, there will be items wrong with your home. It’s no big deal, no matter a 10 item or 50 item list.

Have your home pre-inspected It may seem like double the work, but having it pre-inspected and repairing those items in advance will prevent anything of concern showing up on the buyer’s inspection report and may save a lot of heartache down the road.

Preventative maintenance Perform all of your normal maintenance before you list your home, if you haven’t already. Change air filters, clean vents, check for wood rot and fix doors that don’t latch properly. Walk the entire interior and exterior and be critical.

Hire it out Once you have the needed list of repairs agreed upon, hire a handyman or contract to do the punch out. Selling your home and moving can be a stressful and time consuming thing. Don’t add to your stress by thinking you’re going to replace that rotted wood and paint.

include computer information systems, logistics, accounting, business management, marketing management, patient care technician, early childhood education and more. The first classes are anticipated to begin at the Alpharetta campus in January 2016, and in its first year, should serve approximately 1,500 students. “This is great for our community

because it offers opportunities for our young people to get certification and training in different fields to prepare them for quality, high paying jobs,” said state Sen. Brandon Beach. “We need to constantly be on the cutting edge of technology, and this campus is going to do that for us.” For more information, visit www. gwinnetttech.edu or call 770-962-7580.

Attracting millennials to your small business Do you have plans in place to recruit millennials to your small business? Have you thought through how you are going to attract this “Gen Y” type of talent? Baby boomers are retiring. In fact, over the next five to 10 years, the U.S. will lose 30 to 40 percent of its workforce due to the retirement of this segment. If you don’t have plans to attract millennial talent, you may have difficulty staffing your business. Attracting millennials requires a whole new approach. Big companies like IBM and Deloitte are spending millions of dollars recruiting this segment. Getting in the game requires you to go where the millennials are. Running ads on Career Builder simply won’t cut it. Having a presence on Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and other social sites are much better places to attract millennials than traditional job search sites. Your message to millennials also needs to be different. They value a work-life balance and enjoy spending time with family and friends. If you don’t position your company’s philosophy on this the right way,

Dick Jones

Founder & President Jones Simply Sales

you won’t get many job applications. Boomers and Gen X employees wouldn’t ask for flextime until they were working for years. Today, the Gen Y crowd demands this on day one. Millennials want to be part of the action in the company, not some “gopher” that does all the menial tasks. Expressing to them that they will get plenty of face time and mentoring with management and the opportunity to make a difference will appeal to them. Attracting millennials is key to ensuring your small business has a strong talent pool. Doing it the right way requires you understand this generation, what they expect and how you can best deliver this.

Life-long passion for dance becomes career Life-long dancer Niki Jernigan-Watkins had a dream of turning her passion and talent for dance into a teaching career and bringing the magic of dance alive for others. Driven by her passion and talents, Miss Niki as she’s fondly known by students, is realizing that dream for a sixth year running as the owner and artistic director of Cumming Dance Academy. A tasty way to promote reading (NAPSI)—While a good breakfast can help kids get a great start to the day, books can help keep their minds active all day long. Yet more than two-thirds of children living in poverty don’t have any books at home1. To help support childhood literacy, Frosted Mini-Wheats and other Kellogg’s brands are joining with Scholastic to help families earn free books and put 200,000 books into the hands of children in need through the charity Books for Kids. Recently, children’s book author, actor and father Taye Diggs demonstrated his support by creating a public service announcement to raise awareness about childhood literacy. Diggs explains how families can earn free books for their home libraries and provide books to kids in need. “This is such an important cause for me, especially as a dad, because I know the impact that reading can have on young minds,” said Diggs. There are two ways to support children’s literacy: 1. You can collect the Great

Greek Festival takes place in Cumming Oct. 18-20 By ALDO NAHED aldo@forsythherald.com CUMMING, Ga. — For the ninth year, the Cumming Greek Festival will celebrate the taste of the Mediterranean and bring a slice of Greece to Cumming and North Georgia. The Cumming Greek Festival starts Friday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. and goes to Sunday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Greek Orthodox Parish of Cumming sponsors this annual event at their 16-acre property, 3074 Bethelview Road. New this year is a 5K Run/ Walk dubbed “the Toga Trot” to build even more fun and fellowship into this familyfriendly annual event. Each year, a portion of the monies raised goes to local charities in Forsyth County such as The Place of Forsyth County and Jesse’s House. “Our parish is committed to our local community and helping those in need,” said Johnny Melts, one of the event organizers. All of the crowd favorites are back. Homemade Greek pastries, along with authentic Greek food like gyros, souvlaki, pastitsio, dolmades and lamb are on the menu. There’s even a baklava sundae that is always a big hit with children. Music and period-costumed Hellenic dancers will perform various traditional Greek dances throughout the threeday event. Shops with art, jewelry and other Aegean items will complement the culinary offerings and entertainment. Shopping for merchandise from Greece and local vendors will offer something for everyone, Melts said. Also back this year is the children’s area featuring a petting zoo. One of the highlights of the

Dragon Boat Atlanta: Powered by breast cancer survivors Local team paddles for exercise, camaraderie GAINESVILLE, Ga. — On a recent sunny day in September, a large group of bright yellow dragons were spotted plying the waters at Lake Lanier’s former Olympic rowing and paddling venue during the 18th Annual Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival. Each 39-foot racing boat featured a brightly painted, fierce dragon head at the prow and a tail at the stern. Manned by 20 paddlers, 10 on each side, the canoe-like boats also held a navigator in the back and a drummer in the front, pounding out a steady rhythm to keep the paddlers in sync. Dragon boating is an ancient Chinese cultural tradition which is quickly becoming a popular international sport, especially in the Unites States, Canada and Europe. This year’s Atlanta Dragon Boat Festival drew a very diverse crowd of thousands who cheered on a wide array of collegiate, corporate and recreational boating teams. A splash of pink amid the paddlers made it easy to spot Dragon Boat Atlanta, a team of breast cancer survivors and supporters---men and women hailing from all over North Georgia. Captain Linda Evans led her crew to the water, a big smile on her face, a colorful dragon tattoo curling over her left arm----yes, it’s temporary, but still cool. Did I mention that Evans is 70 years old? She is one of several seniors on the team. But don’t let the white hair fool you---these women are strong survivors, wicked fast on the water and in it to win. Three other teams, from Home Depot, State Farm and Pepsico, soon joined Dragon

Boat Atlanta at the starting line for the 250-meter race. A roar went up from the crowd as the signal was given and the teams leaped into action. It was a very fast and close race, with each team covering the distance in just over a minute. The Home Depot Orange Dragons crossed the line first, followed less than a second later by Dragon Boat Atlanta. Overall, Dragon Boat Atlanta placed 17th out of 40 teams. “That’s pretty darned good for a group of old women!” said one team member. “Dragon boat racing is a sport you either really love or don’t want to do at all,” said Evans. “It requires a lot of effort and practice to learn the proper technique. But the best part is that you must paddle in harmony, as a team.”

Though the thrill of racing makes the long hours of practice worthwhile, Dragon Boat Atlanta’s paddlers never forget the real reason their team was formed in 2004---to raise awareness of breast cancer and prove that survivors can be fit and active long after their diagnosis. Team member Joann Moore of Johns Creek feels a responsibility to share her cancer story with as many women as possible. Moore’s diagnosis came as a complete shock at age 54, only six months after her most recent mammogram. After noticing some tenderness and swelling under her left armpit, several biopsies led to a staggering diagnosis: Stage 4 breast cancer. The cancer was aggressive and invasive and surgery was not an option. “I was stunned,” admits Moore. “But there was no time to wait. There was already cancer in every vertebrae of my spine.” Thankfully, she responded well to chemotherapy and radiation and after nine grueling months, her cancer was under control. “I’m happy proof that Stage 4 doesn’t always mean terminal,” she said. “But looking back, I see how ignorant I was about my body and about the disease. Mammograms are not the only option. Women should talk to their doctor about other screenings such as sonograms or breast MRIs,” she said. Moore won her battle with cancer, but intense radiation on her spine left her unable to run, jump or do anything jarring to her back. After discovering a flyer for Dragon Boat Atlanta, Moore thought upper body paddling might be just the thing for her. She was hesitant about attending her first practice at

Lake Lanier, but after meeting the other women and feeling their genuine welcome, she decided to give it a try. “I was very tired in the beginning, and the others had to carry my weight in the boat at first, but they assured me that this was okay and soon I became a full member of the team.” Moore also paddles with Dragon Boat Atlanta teammate Nancy Crawford as part of a United States breast cancer team, “International Pink Sisters,” in regattas and dragon boat festivals all over the world. In May, they traveled to Italy for the Vogalonga, a worldfamous rowing event. As their pink breast cancer dragon boat floated through the canals of Venice, Moore recalls the emotion on faces of people in the crowd. “People were crying and tossing flowers to us,” she said. “They recognized us as survivors. The Pink Sisters are a symbol of hope wherever we go.” Kathy Cunningham of Cumming, who joined Dragon Boat Atlanta in 2005, calls the discovery of dragon boating the ‘silver lining’ to having had breast cancer. “Paddling is my power. It is my victory over that ugly cancer monster. When I am in a dragon boat gliding over the water, I am empowered and at peace. I am visible to all who see me as a survivor.” Kerstin Spalla of Alpharetta

is Dragon Boat Atlanta's newest and youngest member. In her 30’s, she is a supporter, not a survivor, but she never fails to be inspired by her teammates. “There have been days where I just want to curl up under my blanket and forget about everything that’s troubling me, but I’ll go to practice and be reminded that these women have endured the worst that can be thrown their way. Not only have they endured all the pain that comes with a cancer diagnosis, but they’ve survived and continued to thrive. And I am so very proud to be a part of these women’s lives as a supporter on this team.” Dragon Boat Atlanta is always accepting new members and you do not have to be athletic to paddle. South Forsyth HS celebrates 25 years Reunion gala to be held on Oct. 19 CUMMING, Ga. – When South Forsyth High School welcomed students on Aug. 8 for the first day of school, it did so for the 25th time. The school opened for its inaugural year in 1989 and its first senior class graduated in 1990. Johns Creek ES fun run raises $28K Parking: Continued from Page 4

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — On Sept. 27, the excitement coming from Johns Creek Elementary could be heard half a mile away with their Fun Run. Physical education teacher Kim Autry designed the course for the event while David Krosner, the music teacher, served as master of ceremonies. Krosner played music while students ran laps, one grade at a time. Each class chose a nickname and submitted types of fun laps to do for the event such as the “scream and run lap,” “act like a cat,” “moon walk” and “monster walk.” Many classes made banners to show their class spirit. Leading up to the event, Fun Run volunteers greeted parents and students during morning carpool to remind them to collect sponsorships and to build excitement. They also held a pep rally complete with Fun Run cheerleaders to

motivate students. Students earned prizes for collecting sponsorships for the run, and there was a friendly competition among classes to see who could raise the most money for the school. JCE PTA collected about $28,000 for the school during this event. This event was managed completely by JCE’s parent volunteers, led by Fun Run committee members Cheri Proels, Sandra Caviness and Kelli Bercik. The volunteers set up tents, manned the water station, made sure that school mascot Jaggy made an appearance and helped clean up afterward. Because the event was organized 100 percent in-house, the profit will go directly to the school. JCE PTA plans to use the money raised for grants, programs and school enhancements, which include an outdoor classroom space. —McKenzie Cunningham

The event will be held as a part of the school’s homecoming weekend and will involve alumni and former staff members to celebrate the school’s history, recent achievements and future direction. On the evening of the gala, attendees are being asked to wear blue and silver. A tour of the South Forsyth campus, 585 Peachtree Parkway, is also planned for attendees.

Since the first class graduated in 1989, South Forsyth HS has grown from 580 students to about 2,500. South Forsyth is also home to more than 200 faculty members, staff and administrators. Most recently, South Forsyth was ranked 160 in Newsweek’s 2013 list of America’s Best High Schools.
