This year’s selections look at stories at the local level that are helping to shape the cities of Roswell and Alpharetta. While there were more stories that didn’t

make this year’s “look back,” a brief compilation and review will help to quickly remind our readers of stories we presented this year and some that we’ll continue to follow in the New Year.

Missing boy, father found dead ROSWELL, Ga. – What began as a search for a missing boy ended late Friday morning, Dec. 20, after police found the body of a man and a boy in the woods near where the child was last seen. Four-year-old Jesus CARLOS Dominguez was reportDominguez ed missing Dec. 19. His father was suspected of kidnapping him. Both are believed to be the bodies that were found. Police responded to an Old Holcomb Bridge Way home at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 19 and found a woman unresponsive. “We found the mother in the bedroom brutally beaten,” said Roswell Police Spokeswoman Lisa Holland. Police are not releasing her name; however she is still in North Fulton Hospital in critical condition.

It was discovered the woman had a 4-year-old son who was unaccounted for, Jesus Dominguez. It is believed the father, Carlos Alberto Dominguez, 33, took him. “We knew he was missing and endanJesus gered,” said Holland. Dominguez Alerts were issued for the boy, and agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Natural Resources came in to help in the search of the surrounding area. Mid-morning Friday, the teams found two bodies – a man and a child – in the woods only a half-mile away. Holland said it appeared to be a murder-suicide. Final confirmation on the identity of the bodies rests with the county coroner. She gave him the bag and he demanded she move to a storage room in the back of the building. She said he raised his gun and directed her to stay in the storage room. The armed robber fled the gas station on foot. The employee said she did not know how much money the robber took.

Alpharetta halts some public events Moratorium to determine costs, benefits to downtown By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – This has been a busy year for downtown Alpharetta. Nearly every weekend, there have been events, parties, races and all manner of merriment to keep residents both happy and downtown. In total, there were about 120 events. Unfortunately, the sheer number of events is causing so much trouble for the city that it decided to stop accepting new ones for the next three months. Deputy City Administrator James Drinkard told the City Council Dec. 16 that the costs of hosting these events and the benefits are unknown to the city. “What we are talking about smaller events,” Drinkard said. “We cannot tell if they are having positive impact on the community other than being a fundraiser for an organization.” That is not to say they are

fees. Alpharetta has done none of this and Drinkard said nonprofits and community groups have taken note. “We are increasingly becoming the low cost location for events. That’s not necessarily a good thing,” he said. “If we are putting out resources and absorbing costs, that is taking away from other things we could do.” The City Council agreed. “Unless we are putting people in beds or people [downtown], I’m not sure I want to pay for it,” said Councilmember D.C. Aiken. “If somebody wants to make an event request and pay the freight, that’s permissible.” Councilmember Mike Kennedy agreed. “Every neighborhood and every charity would love to have an event and close the streets and have cops come out,” he said. “The choices are simple – you either staff and pay for it or don’t do it. We have only so many days and so many people.” The 90-day moratorium will encompass the first quarter of 2014.

The teenage driver sustained serious injuries in the early morning crash.

Teen hospitalized after early morning crash ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A 17-yearold boy is in the hospital with serious injuries Dec. 21 after running his car into a monument sign on Mid Broadwell Road, igniting his car. Police say the driver was the only occupant in a black Mercedes sedan and driving eastbound on Mid Broadwell from downtown Crabapple at 3 a.m. He failed to navigate the curve of the road and ran into the brick sign of the Briarfield neighbor-

hood. His car caught fire. When police arrived, they doused the driver with a fire extinguisher to keep flames off him until emergency crews could get him out, said Georgie Gordon, Alpharetta Public Safety spokesman. “It was bad,” Gordon said. An investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the crash, however police suspect high speeds was a contributing factor.

ROSWELL, Ga. – A body was discovered Dec. 19 near Morgan Falls Dam, in Sandy Springs. While confirmation has not come from police yet, authorities believe it is the body of a missing Roswell man. James “Gary” Morris, 71, of Sandy Springs, was last seen at his home Dec. 4 as he left for Roswell’s Don White Park Extension, on Riverside Road. According to his family, he routinely walked the park. His car was found about 1:15 p.m. that day, when he had not returned home. His wife went looking for him.

Police and fire personnel from around the region searched the river and surrounding areas for days, even lowering the morris water level of the Chattahoochee River to aid in the search. The search was hampered by heavy rainfall. The body was discovered by fishermen who found it near Overlook Park, which borders the Morgan Falls and the Chattahoochee River. It was taken to the county coroner for examination and identification. —Jonathan Copsey

Year in review »

City charter changes have long-range effect NORTH FULTON, Ga. –A littleknown legislative body reared its head this year and exercised heretofore unused power to assert control over Fulton County. The Fulton County legislative delegation, made up of Fulton’s elected members to the General Assembly, had for the first time a Republican majority, thanks to some fortuitous redistricting. The delegation was able

to bring legislation before the General Assembly that no city or the county had a say in. Most importantly to Johns Creek and Milton, the delegation allowed the amendment of the cities’ charters to make plain that the cities would be allowed to have bond referendums decided by a majority of residents casting ballots in that election. The original wording in both Johns Creek’s and

Milton’s charters required a majority of registered voters to approve bond referendums. Given the disarray of the Fulton Board of Elections, it would be hard to know how accurate such a roll would be. Never mind the fact it would be a rare vote in cities today that even brought a majority of the voters to the polls. Other actions taken by the legislative delegation sought to rein in the powers of Fulton

Radio towers popping up

the city and the radio authority decided the perfect location for one such 400-foot tower was across the street from their entrance. The radio towers are proposed to be scattered throughout North Fulton, from I-285 northward. Proposed sites are on Fouts Road, Cox Road (Fire Station 6) and the public works department on Hembree Road in Roswell; near Birmingham Park in Milton; Jones Bridge Road in Johns Creek; and Morgan Falls in Sandy Springs, the Riverwood building in Cobb County and Atlanta Fire Station 21 in Atlanta. The Verizon Amphitheatre is also a possible site.

The county has begun upgrading its system; however there are still questions as to how the two systems will mix and what services will overlap. North Fulton’s system will cost about $16 million to build, with the cost divided amongst the four cities based on number of radios used by public safety departments and by total size of the city.

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – This was a good year for North Fulton’s cities and their emergency radio network. The cities north of Atlanta banded together to form their own emergency radio network, which police, fire and emergency medical services use. The county’s system is outdated and frequently fails. While this may not typically worry residents, the new system needs radio towers to operate. Because the cities cannot use Fulton’s towers, they have to build their own. For the residents of the Twelvestones neighborhood on Fouts Road, this proved frustrating in September, as

Saying goodbye to longtime joints

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Residents of Roswell and Alpharetta had to bid goodbye in April to two long-serving eateries – the Southern Skillet, just off Canton Street, and Dockery’s, just north of Old

County. Not all of the legislative delegation’s proposals were signed into law, but it does bode for a proactive delegation to continue to use these newly minted powers to impose its will on the county. One new result has been for a renewed effort to incorporate South Fulton into one city. Organizers say it is to prevent North Fulton from having too much say in the government in their district.

A crowd of about 30 people – the so-called “Skillet Folks” – used to meet every day at the Southern Skillet for breakfast and lunch. Milton Parkway. With its iconic frying pan logo, the Southern Skillet opened in 1980 at 1035 Al-

pharetta Street, just a stone’s throw from modern Canton Street and City Hall. Almost since it opened, resi-

18 at a special meeting before the public and Alpharetta City Council. The 25,000-square-foot building is planned to be two stories, with extensive gardens and green space. Members of the library board and staff said they expect it to fit in with the forthcoming City Center project. Construction is expected to begin in early 2014 and take a year to complete. Both libraries are part of a 2008 bond referendum that was passed to build eight new libraries in Fulton County and renovate a further two.

Mitchell beats DeRito, Roswell keeps status quo

The new Alpharetta Public Library is to break ground in early 2014 and take a year to build. It is incorporated into the new City Center project. dents of Roswell would meet at the Southern Skillet on a daily basis. Since the restaurant closed in 2011 – just a few days after New Year’s Day – a group of about 30 people moved to Slope’s BBQ on Crossville Road to carry on the friendships and camaraderie they formed while eating at the Skillet. The building is planned to be demolished to make way for a supermarket. Dockery’s, which served

a similar function for Alpharetta’s residents, closed to make room for the City Center complex that will house a new library, City Hall and parking deck. Being just across the parking lot from City Hall, Dockery’s became a favorite lunch spot for the city workers for many years. In fact, the cafÊ used to be located inside what is now City Hall. It moved in the mid1980s.

Two libraries move forward

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The East Roswell Library broke ground in August for the new 15,000-square-foot library serving East Roswell. It sits at the corner of Holcomb Bridge Road and Fouts Road. The grand opening of the East Roswell Library is expected in the third quarter of 2014. Plans for Alpharetta’s new library were unveiled March

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – In what can only be described as a nail-biter, incumbent Alpharetta Councilmember Donald Mitchell defeated Doug DeRito by a meager seven votes in November’s election. DeRito had previously held the post Mitchell currently occupies. He gave it up two years ago after nearly a decade to run for mayor. He lost to David Belle Isle. Mitchell ran and won the seat and was on council for the remainder of what would have been DeRito’s term. On election night, the votes came in of a very poorly attended election. Only seven

votes separated the contenders. DeRito challenged the vote, and a week later it was upheld. Also running in this year’s elections were Alpharetta Councilmembers Chris Owens and Mike Kennedy, who ran unopposed, and Roswell’s Nancy Diamond, Jerry Orlans and Kent Igleheart, who all kept their seats against heavy opposition. Roswell’s election essentially came down to who was for or against the upcoming Unified Development Code changes. Diamond and Orlans are for it, and Igleheart is generally opposed. Their opponents took the opposite views. In very tight races, all three incumbents held onto their seats.

Alpharetta greets City Center

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – After years of false starts, Alpharetta finally broke ground in April on a new City Hall, part of a multi-million dollar City Center project that includes a public library and parking deck. The roughly $30 million project on 25 acres on the east side of Main Street is expected to rejuvenate and energize downtown Alpharetta, which has already seen a large uptick in events. This

Roswell grapples with UDC

ROSWELL, Ga. – The upcoming implementation of Roswell’s Unified Development Code (UDC) had residents riled up in 2013. The UDC aims to consolidate the city’s zoning codes that have been cobbled together for the past 40 years, leading to developer and resident confusion over what is allowed. By simplifying the code, the goal is that everyone has a clear understanding on what is expected of them and their property. However, the public process of the update has been met with confusion and anger of residents, who feel they have been left out of the discussion. Many of the residents fear that new zoning would allow higher density and could spur greater apartment construction. Rumors and emails have circulated claiming high-density homes could be built without going through the normal zoning and public

hearing process. Mayor Jere Wood and the city were quick to allay those fears, saying apartments would still have to come through the public hearing process and council approval. Even those residents who said they understand the need for the UDC still raised concerns both about the speed at which the process was moving and how public input was handled. Some advocated slowing down instead of pressing for an endof-year approval. Wood said the document is not finished and that public discussion of an incomplete document is unproductive. Final approval of the document was pushed back into 2014 in response to the fears and to allow the public more time to view and respond to changes that may be coming.

Roswell looks to outsource courts

ROSWELL, Ga. – Longtime Roswell Municipal Court Judge Maurice Hilliard resigned suddenly Aug. 19 after 32 years on the bench. He will be the final elected judge in Roswell. Sitting on the bench, he was known to be fair and dispassionate, and attorneys said they knew the case would be tried on the law. But Hilliard said the time had come to step down.

This year, Roswell Municipal Court Judge Maurice Hilliard, left, resigned. Following suit, Alpharetta Judge Jim Matoney, right, retired. After Hilliard’s resignation, Roswell’s City Council decided he would be the final elected judge in the city. While the city charter requires an elected judge, state law allows for an appointed one, chosen by the council. Roswell was the last city in the state to elect its judge. Alpharetta was the secondto-last city in the state to elect its judge. This year, longtime Judge Jim Matoney retired.

Like Hilliard, he will be Alpharetta’s final elected judge. Alpharetta will also appoint its judges. Unlike Matoney, Hilliard left with a bang. His trademark fiery attitude was leveled at the council that they were violating the town charter by choosing to appoint rather than elect judges. In Hilliard’s wake, in November the city was the subject of a lawsuit from two

of its court clerks, alleging the solicitor had interfered with their work. Linda Spencer, the chief clerk of the court, and Patti Lane, the deputy clerk, have filed suit against the city, alleging that City Solicitor Krista Young, in her duties as solicitor, interfered with their own duties and improperly withheld and impeded documents needed to run the courts. In particular, they allege Young removed 250 criminal warrants without authority or documentation. The city denies the allegations. All this comes as Roswell is looking at outsourcing many of the duties of the city court. Many of the clerks and their workload would be offloaded onto a third party that already does such work with the city of Sandy Springs.

FSA HS drops state charter school application Fulton County provides ‘better choice for now’ By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Just days after receiving approval from the Fulton County Board of Education, the governing board of the Fulton Science Academy High School (FSA HS) has opted to suspend its pursuit of becoming a state charter school beginning in the 2015-2016 school year. Under state rules, existing charter schools must receive a waiver from the local school board to apply to become a state-commissioned charter school. FSA HS still has nearly

18 months remaining on its charter contract with Fulton Schools. During the Fulton School Board’s Dec. 12 meeting, the waiver request from FSA HS was approved unanimously. However, after discussion at a meeting on Dec. 18, the governing board of FSA HS opted not to proceed with the application. In a letter to parents outlining the decision not to pursue state charter status, Principal Namik Sercan said there were numerous factors that led to the decision. “While there are good arguments for and against seeking a state charter, the FSA HS Governing Board elected to withhold our application for a state charter this year,” he wrote. “In weighing the pros and cons, it became clear that

keeping our charter with Fulton County is the better choice for now. Ultimately, we will have to make a decision on our charter next fall.” The high school currently has an enrollment of 173 students. During the first month of its recruitment for students next year, Sercan said more than 150 students have submitted applications. The relationship between the Fulton School System and FSA HS has been a rocky one for the past few years, although Sercan noted it is improving. “We have worked hard to bridge our differences with the school district and are grateful for their willingness to work with us,” said Sercan. “It’s too soon to know where things will end up, but progress is being

made.” Last December, the Fulton Board of Education voted to terminate the school’s charter based on what it perceived as operational and financial deficiencies. After six months of deliberation, the State Board of Education – the ultimate authority in terminating local charters – opted in June to send the issue back to Fulton Schools for additional information. Since then, FSA HS has continued to operate as a Fulton charter school and is actively recruiting students for the 2014-2015 school year. For its part, the Fulton School Board has opted not to take any further action toward a

termination, and will apparently allow the charter school to continue its final two years of operation under the current charter. Moving forward into its extended future, FSA HS has two options before it. It can still apply to become a state-commissioned charter school or work to renew its charter with the Fulton County Board of Education beginning in the 2015-2016 school year. A spokesperson for Fulton Schools indicated FSA HS must submit its request for renewal by September in order to be considered for a renewal. The state charter application has a separate timetable.

Seeks more local control, less federal intervention By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@northfulton.com ROSWELL, Ga. – Roswell educator Kira Willis has announced her candidacy for state school superintendent, running on a platform willis of increased flexibility for local schools and a “just say no” stance when it comes to federal funding and oversight. This is Willis’ second run at the state’s top education job, having run in 2010 as the Libertarian candidate when she garnered 125,000 votes statewide. Despite the Libertarian banner three years ago, Willis said her views on education remain aligned with the conservative majority in Georgia. “I was conservative in 2010 and I’m even more convinced that conservative values of increasing school choice and prioritizing spending are the keys to improving Georgia’s education system,” said Willis, who will run in the Republican primary in May 2014. A new superintendent will replace current officeholder John Barge, who surprised many when he opted to run for governor instead of seeking re-election. Willis has been an educator in the Fulton County School System for nearly two decades

and is currently the graduation coach and response to intervention (RTI) coordinator at North Springs Charter High School. She previously taught at Woodland Middle School, Centennial High School and Roswell High School. Though the election is more than a year away, Willis has very clear ideas of what is working, and what is not, in Georgia education. She dislikes the limited options for parents when it comes to school choice based on street address alone, believes there is too much control from the federal government over local schools and supports allowing kids to test out of courses once they have mastered the material. The state is, however, moving in the right direction when it comes to some aspects of education reform, said Willis. “We are finally moving away from the excessive testing that we have had in the past, [and] the class of 2014 is the last class to sit for the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT),” said Willis. She also supports the new Teacher Keys (TKES), which provides a mechanism to evaluate the effectiveness of classroom teachers. “Although I believe it needs a bit of work, as the implementation seems to be more punitive than it should be, teachers want the chance to shine,” said Willis. What she would seek to jet-

tison, if elected, is the relatively small percentage of federal education funds that come to the state, yet bring with it significant intervention in local school operation. “It’s a very simple plan: Say no to federal money,” she said. “With federal money come federal mandates that far outweigh the amount ‘awarded’ to Georgia.” She cites the $40 million awarded to Georgia to implement the Common Core Curriculum and the assessments (PARCC) that came along with the curriculum. In comparison, the state outlay for education is more than $7 billion annually. Willis believes she brings a parent and teacher perspective to a political position, and can build bridges between the Department of Education and elected officials. “I am not a seasoned politician, and I think that is one of the reasons why I am a candidate who [can] go to the state department and talk about education from a practical and level-headed standpoint,” she said. “We must keep the children in the forefront of our mind when making any educational decisions.” Willis, 45, is certified as an educational specialist in curriculum and instruction and has a master’s degree in education leadership from Kennesaw State University. She and her husband, Todd, an assistant principal at Elkins Pointe Middle School in Roswell, have two children.

ROSWELL, Ga. – Roswell Mayor Jere Wood was the latest Republican official to host a fundraiser for Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle’s re-election, with one eye on 2014 and the other on what Cagle may do in 2018. While Cagle roundly insists his eyes are only on re-election next year, he is widely considered to be the frontrunner for governor in 2018. Wood made no bones about it in introducing Cagle at his home Dec. 10 to well-heeled Republicans of old Roswell. “We like the job Casey Cagle is doing for us in the Senate as lieutenant governor, but I’m looking ahead to the governor’s race [in 2018],” Wood said. “I didn’t think Roy Barnes could be beaten, and Sonny Perdue showed he could. “And I backed Karen Handel because she was a friend and our hometown girl. I want to be on the winning side in the next [2018] election,” Wood told his guests. Cagle was quick to say he is concentrating on his 2014 re-election, but he did nothing to quash the notion of a run at the top job in the following election. He has also worked with

North Fulton legislators to move the bills they are interested in through the Senate. This makes them successful back home and likely to maintain that relationship should Cagle move into the “big house” on West Paces Ferry. Cagle brings a message that resonates with North Fulton residents and business people. It is a message that extols what separates Georgia from the rest of the Deep South, and its ability to do business and anticipate what it needed to do to become not only a national player but an international player. That included the vision of Atlanta to build an international airport that is today Hartsfield-Jackson, for Gov. Zell Miller to promote Savannah to be one of the important ports on the Eastern seaboard and for Fulton County Commissioner Michael Lomax to pioneer Ga. 400, which became the road to dot.com businesses, corporate headquarters, upscale housing and schools of excellence. “[North Fulton] made the significant infrastructure investment upfront to ensure its success,” Cagle told the Republican faithful gathered

Fashion show raises money for Marcus Autism Center By HATCHER HURD hatcher@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Local women took to the runway to show maternity wear can be fashionable as well as practical, all to raise money for children with autism. Izzy Maternity at North Point Village has an annual holiday fashion show – this is their seventh – that not only previews the new holiday look, but also raises money for charity. This year, the recipient was the Marcus Center for Autism, a part of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Hannah Vahaba, the daughter of the founder of the company, said what makes their fashion show special is they use their customers as models. “We want to show the holiday look, but we want to put it on a real woman’s body. So we try to get women of all shapes and sizes and let women see what it really is going to look like,” Vahaba said. “We’ve found women really like to shop this way. They say, ‘Oh I love that on her, I want that.’” Nineteen model/customers participated in the event, wearing everything from casual party attire to ball gowns. “We do everything from business casual to all the dressy stuff,” Vahaba said. The women get a kick out of getting dressed up to walk down the runway. Often it is a family event with husbands and children in the audience watching mom be a model. The company chose Marcus Center for Autism this year in part because Vahaba once worked for Children’s Health-

Alpharetta mulls convention center in Avalon Retail 90% leased By HATCHER HURD and JONATHAN COPSEY hatcher@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A new wrinkle in the $600 million Avalon mixed-use project going up at Ga. 400 and Old Milton Parkway could include a fourstar hotel and a 47,000-square-foot convention center. Alpharetta and North American Properties are in discussions to partner in building the convention center pending a study on costs. Phase one is already on schedule for an October 2014 grand opening that includes nearly 400,000 square feet of retail, 250 multi-family units, 101 single-family units and 83,000 square feet of office space. Mark Toro, managing partner at North American Properties and the developer of Avalon, announced the project is 90 percent leased with many leading national retailers and restaurateurs having signed on. North American Properties is the same real estate company that turned around Midtown’s Atlantic Station. In 2011, it paid $22.8 million for what was then called Prospect Park, an ambitious suburban luxury shopping center and mixed-use development that went south when the recession hit. North American called the new project Avalon. Alpharetta had issued in March an “indication of interest,” asking for ideas and proposals for a convention center. Avalon was chosen by the city as the better of the two responders. The idea for a hotel and convention center has been pushed by Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle, and Avalon was always on the city’s short list of sites. The City Council took the first steps in partnering with Avalon at its meeting last week.

Avalon by the numbers • 40,000-plus dump truck loads of dirt will be moved on site (50,000 cubic yards) • 87,000 linear feet, or 16 miles, of underground piping • 20,000 tons of recycled concrete from demolition reused in the construction • of Avalon • 250 luxury apartments • 101 Monte Hewitt • single-family homes • Total project is 2.4 million square feet NORTH AMERICAN PROPERTIES

The city has anted up $60,000 for a predevelopment design and cost analysis, with North American picking up the rest of the cost. It is estimated the convention center would cost in the neighborhood of $25 million. The city and the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau will split the cost of the city’s end. Belle Isle said if the convention center could be brought in for that amount, the city could pay for the revenue bonds to build it through an increase in the Alpharetta Convention and Visitors Bureau tax on hotel beds. “That is the only real potential source to pay for those bonds that this council would consider is through an increase in the hotel-motel tax,” Belle Isle said. It is conservatively estimated that moving the tax from 6 percent to 8 percent would raise more than $24 million. The proposal at Avalon calls for 300 hotel rooms in a full-service hotel along with up to 47,000 square feet of convention space, but the agreement is not binding. “Once the study is done, then the council will have to decide whether to pursue it. The only thing that has been

definitively decided is that we want to learn more,” he said. Belle Isle says he likes the idea of a convention center in Alpharetta because it would be an asset that would allow Alpharetta to continue to lead the area economically. “It would provide many of the com-

with 13,000 square feet of space. “Within 10 miles of here [downtown Alpharetta], there are 63 hotels,” said Jim Stormont, with Stormont Hospitality Group. “Almost every single one of them is limited service and the only full-service hotel is the Marriott, which doesn’t have a lot of meeting space. There is a huge need for meeting space in this market, and we see a big opportunity.” Stormont has partnered with Avalon on the hotel, and has a history of building highend hotels, most recently the Marriott at Hartsfield-Jackson

Dan Ross and his wife, Crystle, owners of Atlantic Express Seafood, with daughters Cammie and Sophia (baby).

Airport. He said the hotel and conference center would be placed in the Avalon project along the Ga. 400 side and feature prominently in the designs. The benefits, he said, would be many. There could be as much as $42 million in total economic benefits to the region, with 210 jobs created directly. Hundreds more would be created indirectly and supported by the center. By the third year of operations, Stormont said there would be $1.5 million in taxes generated each year by the convention center.

November sales for North Fulton and Forsyth County. Comparing sales year-over-year for the month of November unit sales dropped a modest 4 percent in North Fulton, but went down a whopping 22 percent in Forsyth County. The seasonal shift to lower unit sales was expected but it is interesting that the numbers varied so much between the two areas. The good news though is that sales prices are still showing a solid increase over the same period last year. The average sales price in Forsyth County is up 12 percent over last November to $277,116 and up 13 percent in North Fulton to $411,218. Additionally, the average days-onmarket is down 35 percent in Forsyth County and 38 percent in North Fulton. So, on average homes are selling for more than last year and selling more quickly. Sales prices have shown strong improvement all year and will continue to

make gains next year, but those gains will not be quite as robust with the additional inventory we’ll see from new home building and with more sellers having crossed over the negative equity threshold into positive territory. Ultimately this will be a good thing as a balanced market is a healthy market. Bob Strader is a local realtor with the NORTH Group of Keller Williams Realty. Tax changes and expiring tax breaks to be aware of before end of 2013 Throughout the year, I often discuss taxes with my clients – including the tax changes that affect them as small business owners and the expiring tax breaks that they face on their individual returns. Here are some important changes to keep in mind. Tax changes for corporations and sole proprietors in 2013: Health care tax credit. Small businesses that employ fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees may qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit. To do so, the employees’ average annual wages cannot be more than $50,000, and the business must pay at least half the premiums for employees’ single health insurance coverage. The maximum credit is equal to 35 percent of the premiums paid by the business. The credit can be claimed in tax years 2010 through 2013 and for any two years after that. Hiring qualified veterans. Businesses that hire veterans who have served our country can receive certain tax credits. In 2013, the maximum credit for hiring qualified veterans at a for-profit business is $9,600 per worker, while tax-exempt organizations can claim a $6,240 credit per worker. Deduction for equipment purchases. The Section 179 expense deduction for equipment purchases for 2013 is $500,000 of the first $2 million of certain business property placed in service during the year. For qualified property that exceeds the threshold amount, the bonus depreciation is 50 percent.

CHRIS SMITH CB Smith & Associates Tax breaks for individuals set to expire on Dec. 31, 2013: Energy-efficient appliances. Taxpayers can get a 10 percent tax credit for eligible items such as pellet stoves or a newer water heater. IRA distributions for charitable contributions. One way for those who are 70.5 years or older to reduce income and take advantage of other tax provisions is to donate their mandatory minimum IRA distributions to charity, up to $100,000. Small business stock. Now is an ideal time to invest in small businesses. For stock that is purchased before Dec. 31 and held for five years, 100 percent of the capital gains can be excluded. Electric vehicles. A tax credit of up to $7,500 is available for fourwheel electric vehicles, ranging from Ford to Fiat to BMW and more. It is important to note that the tax credit for electric vehicles do not technically expire in 2013 because it phases out after 200,000 vehicles are built by the manufacturer.

With the holiday season already started, what plans do you have to recognize your employees? Are you planning on doing something to show your employees that you really care about them? Even though the holiday season is a busy time of year, small business owners shouldn’t miss the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements by their employees.A little can go a long way in creating a work environment where your employees know you care about them. So what are some of the options you have to recognize your employees? Allow them to take a few hours off to do some of their holiday shopping. Offer flexible work schedules to allow them to move their schedules around to accommodate family time. Plan a luncheon to celebrate the season and build morale by conveying your thanks. Hand out gift certificates or cards. These are all low-cost options that go a long way in saying “thank-

you” to your employees. The holiday season is also a great time to hand out bonus checks and announce promotions to those who were high contributors. And for small business owners who don’t have the resources to do what is suggested above, a simple hand written and personalized note can go a long way in conveying your thanks. Recognizing your employees during the holidays is a great opportunity to demonstrate you care about them, and will go a long way in improving morale in your small business.

Will it feel like their home How will your loved one’s next home feel like their home and keep them safe? Finding the right mix of “peace of mind” and economic value for the services rendered to a frail loved one, can be a difficult situation. Do you know their needs? Really? How will you speak on your loved one’s behalf if they are not able to do so themselves? Good questions. Experts recommend that you actually take a month (or two) and stay with your loved one in their current home so

you can know what daily needs are required to keep everyone in the best quality health. Additionally, during your month, take some field trips to the possible Assisted Living Communities around making sure to pay attention to their “Open Door” policy, their staff (and any turn over in staff), the mobility of the residents, etc. If you are still comfortable after 4or5 visits, then take your loved one with you. The time spent in the research is worth it… Think about how they carefully chose your first school, car or college.

Now it is your turn. Hearthstone Personal Care Community prides itself on easing this process by providing peace of mind and financial certainty for our families thru transparency of care at one simple all inclusive rate. From the time that you enter our doors, you will feel the warmth and compassion that is an integral part of daily life here. Players of Year not among top recruiting targets Efforts of Grauss, Biondich lauded by coaches By MIKE BLUM news@northfulton.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The 2012 North Fulton high school football Players of the Year were both heavily recruited by elite Division I schools and spent their freshman seasons playing extensively for a pair of teams in the SEC. The 2013 North Fulton high school football Players of the Year are not being heavily recruited by Division I schools, with one of them more likely to play lacrosse in college after he graduates in 2015. You might not find Northview receiver Matty Biondich or Alpharetta linebacker Bryce Grauss near the top of any football recruiting lists, but the two players were hard to miss when playing for their respective teams this past season. Biondich and Grauss are the North Fulton Players of the Year, with Grauss earning defensive honors and Biondich the area’s top offensive player. Grauss, a senior, was the Defensive Player of the Year in Region 6-AAAAAA and spearheaded the defensive effort that led the Raiders to an undefeated region record and a victory in the first round of the state playoffs. Although he was slowed by an injury late in the season, Grauss continued to play defense from sideline to sideline, making tackles all over the field, causing fumbles, intercepting passes and generally causing havoc for opposing offenses. “If what you’re looking for is production and an impact on the game, I don’t think there’s been a better football player in North Fulton the last five years,” Alpharetta coach Jason Dukes said of Grauss. In the Raiders’ playoff victory over South Gwinnett, Grauss did a little bit of everything despite having to come out of the game more than once due to a knee problem. He had multiple quarterback sacks, forced a fumble, blocked a punt, made a long interception return and simply would not allow Alpharetta to lose, with the Raiders coming away with the first playoff victory in school history. “He made everything go,” Dukes said of the impact Grauss had on the Alpharetta defense. Despite his efforts during the season, Grauss has not been a target of recruiters at

the highest levels of college football, unlike 2012 Defensive Player of the Year Carl Lawson of Milton, who played extensively at defensive end as a freshman at Auburn. “But as far as actual impact on a game – causing fumbles, pressuring the quarterback, making tackles in the backfield, you’d be hard pressed to find any defensive player more productive than Bryce was,” Dukes said. At least Grauss (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) looks like a football player. Biondich is all of 5-foot-7, 155 pounds and is likely to play lacrosse in college at West Point, having already committed to the U.S. Military Academy. Army, which rarely throws out of its triple option offense, would not have much use for Biondich’s football skills, which are impressive despite his slight stature. The 2012 North Fulton Offensive Player of the Year, Alpharetta’s Joshua Dobbs, ended this past season as the starting quarterback at Tennessee. Northview coach Chad Davenport needed only one word to describe the kind of season Biondich had for the Titans. “Unbelievable,” Davenport said. “He does not drop anything.” Biondich, a junior, compiled a highlight reel’s worth of amazing catches throughout the season, finishing with 75 receptions for 1,225 yards and 13 touchdowns, with his yardage total second in the state and first in AAAAA. Even though opposing defenses knew the ball was going to Biondich in key situations, he managed to make one big catch after another, frequently down the field against double coverage. “He runs very good pass routes, has great speed Chad Davenport and tremenNorthview Coach dous concentration,” Davenport said. “And he’s a smart receiver. He knows how to break off the route if he has to and make an adjustment.” Biondich had at least one touchdown reception in each of the Titans’ last nine games, and had at least 100 yards receiving seven times in 2013. Biondich also had a punt return for a touchdown and handled the punting duties for

Pearson back next season, the Titans’ opponents in 6-AAAAAA will have a new pass threat duo to deal with after the graduation of all the region’s collection of standout receivers from the 2013 season.

Coach of the Year Sharing honors as North Fulton Coach of the Year are Mount Pisgah’s Mike Forrester and Blessed Trinity’s Tim McFarlin. Forrester helped guide the Patriots to the semifinals in the Class A private school division, where they lost 17-16 to Aquinas, which won the state title the next week with a 27-7 victory. Coming off a 6-5 season and a first round playoff loss in 2012 to the top-ranked team in the 16team bracket, Mount Pisgah finished with a 12-1 record in Forrester’s first season as head coach. McFarlin led the Titans to a third straight playoff berth in Class AAA, with BT capturing a region title against some very tough competition. The Titans, who faced

Be kind »

You never know what others are going through “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind.” Someone posted that on my Facebook wall, and I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since – not that I necessarily want to. When I first saw it, I immediately started processing how true it was – how many times the idea hit close to home. I thought of the kids in our community who took their own lives this year and the pain endured by the friends and family of those kids. I thought of the principal and the teachers who taught at the schools where those kids went and the herculean efforts they made to prevent more tragedies. And I imagined the indescribable pain and frustration when despite their efforts, it continued. I thought how hard it must have been and how brave and heroic it was when those administrators showed up at school – or back home every day – and somehow managed to slip on masks of positive attitudes, smiles and engagement with those around them. I thought of the people I know who lost jobs, who lost careers in mid-stream, out of the blue and who didn’t know what to do. I thought about what it felt like to pretend that everything was OK, that their

Ray Appen

pride really wasn’t hurt when they stayed unemployed or when they took jobs that maybe their kids would have qualified for. I thought about the frustration and emptiness they must have felt when they couldn’t provide for their family. I imagined one of them in front of me at a traffic light a bit distracted and not noticing that the light was green – and my hand moving toward the horn. When I saw that Facebook post, I thought about my kids growing up in this Internet age where all personal information is public and where all secrets are found, and where kids are surrounded by pressure and stress from corners of their lives to which we parents are oblivious. I imagined how hard it is to be a kid today – or a parent, and I wondered if the short tempers, the ugly comments, the seemingly self-centered behavior that seems to permeate our lives today might somehow be related. Everyone you meet is fight-

ing a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. I thought about the single moms struggling to support their children, hold down jobs, pay bills and still try to have a life. I thought of the ministers carrying the burdens of their congregations silently on their shoulders and working more hours than they would ever admit to and never complaining. I thought of those holding two or three jobs to try to make ends meet and how that might look on their faces when they were in line at the grocery, in the bleachers at the ball game, sitting in a restaurant or watching others complaining about the difficulty of finding a court or chatting on their phones at the red light in a hurry to get to lunch at a local watering hole. Be kind. Walk in their shoes. At least try. One of the hardest things for a parent to teach a child is the concept of empathy. Being the center of attention is how we are born and what is hardwired into us, and it does not necessarily go away as one grows older. It has to be unlearned. One of the best ways is to be exposed to someone who has unlearned it. Children’s and adults’ behavior is learned; it is modeled. That is,

Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. we learn by example. My daughter Amelia has been babysitting recently for a single mom. The woman holds down a modest-paying job and is raising two young foster children. She recently took on a third foster child because, I suspect, no one would take the child because she is older. The mom never stops. Between her job and trying to raise those kids, I don’t know how she finds time to sleep. But Amelia is not babysitting for this woman to give her a break. She is babysitting for her because the woman is organizing – on her own – a mom’s night out for all the other foster moms so they can have a break. She is coordinating babysitters. She is finding a place and a way to entertain and “sit” all these foster kids, all in her “spare” time and with her “extra money.” This mom is fighting a battle that few would be aware of or consider, and she does

so willingly and with love. She deserves your patience, your admiration and, yep, your compassion and empathy. I think that most of you, if you knew what she is doing would gladly give her a helping hand or, at a minimum, not be mean or impatient with her in daily life. But here is the rub: “she” is everyone. She doesn’t wear a label that says she deserves or needs your understanding or support. You just have to have faith that “she” needs you – and you need her. And, no, my daughter is not charging her. In the case with our family, I have probably learned more by modeling my children – and my wife – than anything else during my 59 years on this planet. Be kind, and even when you can’t be kind, be kind anyway. At the end of the day, making someone else’s world a little better in some way is making everyone’s world a little better – including your own.

O Tannenbaum, where art thou now? I know I am not breaking new ground when I bemoan the commercialization of Christmas. Many have trod that path ahead of me. But when Christmas lights go up in stores the day after Halloween, well it is a sign of the times. What I am bemoaning as I turn the final corner before Christmas is the fate of that iconic emblem of Christmas – the tree. Their cost can easily run to three figures. Once home, it is likely to be “themed” with all-white ornaments, or all Duck Dynasty, or whatever. It will have no personality. What about the Christmas tree of yore? Yes, that sylvan emblem embossed with tinsel, lights and brilliantly speckled ornaments that once stood sentinel by the fireplace. It awaited only the arrival of that Jolly Old Elf to complete his mission of joy, while those visions of sugar plums danced in our dreams. The decorating of the tree was a festive occasion, yet laden with traditions. It was a family affair in which even I,

Hatcher Hurd

Executive Editor hatcher@northfulton.com

the youngest, was allowed to participate. Later on, I would attend the selection of the tree, an equally serious event although quite exciting as it was always done at night after my father got home from work. Rituals performed at night heighten the senses and take on an aura of portent, even if your brother keeps poking you in the side. And it involves a transaction, also a sign that this is more than just frivolity. But once the tree is erected in the house, cradled in its stand and barren of all adornment save the emerald green needles endowed by God, it becomes a canvas. Boxes stored a twelvemonth are unearthed and brought into the living room to begin the transformation.

Many of the glass balls – these were the treasured decorations brought into the family like a dowry – I was not allowed to handle. I could be trusted to hang some of the more newly bought globes. But those imbued with tradition, with memories, with that auld lang syne, those, I could not touch. I had not earned the right to place those. Some were made of cardboard. They were left over from World War II when you couldn’t use materials that were needed for the war effort. One decoration had my name on it, and that was for me alone to place upon a bough. And what lights we had on our tree. We didn’t trifle with those penny-ante twinkly blips that pass for tree lights these days. We had real tree lights. I am talking war-surplus searchlight lights. You had to place aluminum reflectors around the business end of them before screwing them in to protect the tree from the heat they emitted. My cousins had these really fancy lights that were tubes filled with liquid that bubbled

when they heated up. They made the tree look like it was moving. They were really cool, but not really, well, traditional. When all the decorations were up, the last was the tinsel. That was my favorite. First, you couldn’t break tinsel, so it was a safe bet I wasn’t going to get into any trouble. Except that I would because I would try to throw it as high as I could to see what branch I could reach. This exasperated my mother who would patiently place single strands of the silvery ribbons until they were all gone. But I wanted the effect to look as if it were snow, and snow just falls from above, right? Finally the tree was done, and now all that was left was to wait for the presents to accumulate beneath it – as if all that waiting was something tolerable. It was quite a chore too, checking each morning and evening to see if any new arrivals had my name. I don’t check the packages anymore. I don’t get many gifts anymore. Not that I have been a naughty boy all year, but I am of an age where I enjoy the

giving rather than the getting. And it is not much of a tree anymore. Years ago, we gave over to the “Made in China” tree. So rather than the anticipation of finding the right Christmas tree, it was a lonely plod down to the basement to bring up the same one for assembly. This year, it was not even the big tree, just a little brother, it too made of plastic. I just put a plastic bag over it in situ last year and carried it down. This year, I brought it up and pulled the bag off like a magician, and voila, instant Christmas tree! It’s just not the same. But no worries. Early on Christmas morning, My Lady Wife and I will get up, gather up breakfast casseroles and drive 10 minutes to the kids’ house. There, two little boys will have been up for an hour but banished from the downstairs until our arrival. Then at last unleashed, we will sit back and watch the awe, the excitement and the wonder as they roam for plunder under their Christmas tree. And that will be enough.

Triplets: Continued from Page 13 prior to moving to Georgia in 2008. That success followed them to Dynamo Swim Club and, later, to Chattahoochee. Of the 11 records listed on Chattahoochee’s swim and dive website, eight belong to at least one Litherland. All three are four-year lettermen as well as senior team captains. All three have been named team MVP. The brothers, swimming for Dynamo, qualified for the 2012 London Olympic Team Trials. Each is well-rounded in every stroke, but each has his own specialty. Not surprisingly, they have their sights set on Rio in 2016. What’s more, they could each swim for a different country if they so choose. As U.S. citizens, they naturally can swim for the United

States. Or they could swim for the homelands of their Japanese mother and New Zealander father. Right now, the brothers are focusing on their last high school swim season and the dream of a 6A state championship bid for Chattahoochee. That would be a fitting close to their long list of accomplishments as the Litherlands enter UGA next fall. Jay, a member of the U.S. National Junior Team in the individual medley events, was the bronze medalist in the 400 individual medley at the Junior Nationals. He came in sixth in the 400 individual medley in the World Junior Championships and was seventh in the 400 individual medley in the FINA World Cup. With two state records and three high school marks, Jay is ranked No. 2 in the 400 individual medley, No. 4 in the 200 individual medley and

holds top-10 rankings in the 1,000 freestyle and the 200 backstroke. Kevin, another member of the U.S. National Junior Team in the 1,500 freestyle, was the bronze medalist in the 800 freestyle in the U.S. Open and in the 1,500 freestyle at the Junior Nationals. He holds the country’s top time in the 800 freestyle and has top-15 national rankings in the 400 and 1,500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley. Kevin set two state records and two high school marks. Mick, a finalist at the Junior Nationals in the 200 butterfly and the 400 individual medley, set one state and three high school records.
