Construction of the new courthouse in downtown Cumming is ongoing. The facility will be completed by the end of the year.
A look ahead at Forsyth County in 2014 Bright future for county, community in 2014 Chamber excited about new opportunities As we enter into 2014, it is a great opportunity to recall some of the many highlights of the past year for Forsyth County. Among those is certainly the fact that Forsyth County’s financial condition remains strong. The county’s 2014 operating budget was funded with no increase in the county’s property tax millage rate. In fact, Forsyth County has the same total millage rate for the fourth consecutive year. I think our county has done an outstanding job of keeping taxes low while still providing the quality services our citizens expect.

Selective burglar steals $6K in items CUMMING, Ga. — Someone broke into a home and took items totaling over $6,250, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. A man in the 2000 block of Brook Valley Drive told deputies he arrived home at about 6:45 p.m. Dec. 18 and found his back door unlocked, the window next it open and the screen knocked out. He said he went inside and saw drawers in the downstairs bedroom were opened, but nothing was missing. Then, he went upstairs to the master bedroom and saw the dresser drawers opened, but nothing was missing or out of place. In the master bathroom, the wall cabinets next to the sink were opened, but also nothing was missing. He said the jewelry box that sat on the corner of the dresser was missing along with his lose change bowl. The homeowner’s wife said her Tiffany’s pearl necklace was in the jewelry box, but nothing else of value was inside.
possibly the look out. He said he followed the suspect outside and he got into a black Dodge Ram. Officers were waiting in the parking and pulled over the truck. Officers said they told the suspect to stop, and he looked at the officer and took off running toward Market Place Boulevard. Officers stayed with the truck, because there was another person inside. The man inside the truck told officers his father was the one running. He said he had no idea what his father
Deputies said multiple electronics and other laptops, prescription medication bottles and other jewelry were overlooked. The thief sorted through the loose change bowl, picked out mint candy and left it on the dresser. The Christmas tree had several wrapped and undisturbed presents left under it, and deputies said the suspect was “very selective and neat during the theft.”
Citizen reports drugged man in car CUMMING, Ga. — A concerned citizen called 911 to report a man who had been sitting unconscious in his running car, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. At about 10 a.m. Dec. 18, someone shopping at Kroger, 2655 Freedom Parkway, told deputies there was a young man slumped over the steering wheel in a car in the front parking lot. The person told Kroger employees he had been in his car for about 20 minutes with the car running. When deputies arrived, they walked up to the silver Toyota 4-Runner and saw the man still slumped over the steering wheel. Deputies knocked on the window, and the man raised his head. Deputies saw a wooden cutting board in his

The father was found by the dumpsters behind Discount Tire, and he was taken to Northside Forsyth Hospital for medical issues. Donald Sullivan, 43, was charged with theft by shoplifting, obstruction and possession of tools used in a crime. Officers also said they found a glass pipe, possibly used to smoke marijuana.
lap with an uncovered syringe lying on it, the cap and a bottle top with a brown color substance inside it. Deputies opened the door and ordered the man to hold out his hands while they grabbed the cutting board. The man was shaking, sweating and seemed confused as he was ordered out of the car. The man said the substance was heroin, but the syringe belonged to another man who was there with him. Deputies saw no other person with him and did not find one. Cameron O’Reilly, 22, was charged with possession of a hallucinogen, a felony, and possession of marijuana under one ounce, a misdemeanor. O’Reilly was taken to Forsyth County Detention Center.
Homeless man steals from pastor CUMMING, Ga. — A homeless man was allowed to temporarily stay in a church’s basement, and several items went missing, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. The pastor of Spirit Baptist Church, 6910 Nix Road, told deputies he let a homeless man stay in the basement starting Nov. 1 “until he got back on his feet again.” About two weeks later, the

pastor noticed his Black and Decker drill, 200-piece drill bit set and a leather jacket were missing. The items totaled $300 in value and belonged to the pastor and not the church. When the pastor confronted the man, he denied taking them. On Nov. 24, the pastor asked the man to leave, and he did. The pastor said he looked for his items at pawn shops, and found his drill and drill bit at a pawn shop in Dawsonville. The pawnshop attendant said it was pawned on Nov. 11.
$4K in clothes shipped to house CUMMING, Ga. — A woman found three boxes of women’s clothes totaling $4,112 sitting on her doorstep, but she never ordered them, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. The woman told deputies that FedEx delivered the expensive clothes at about 10:30 a.m. Dec. 12, but she never ordered them. Her sister told her she recently gave the address to a man she met on an online dating service. He said he wanted to send information about an envelope-stuffing job she could do from home. it a strong player on the global stage. The Chamber acts as an avenue to channel the incredible collective resources of great business people to create economic opportunity for everyone. That opportunity is what makes this community remarkable and sets it apart from so many places around the world. In the coming year the Chamber plans to expand the reach of its economic development efforts and provide additional support to the fastest growing industry in the community: health care. Forsyth Co. libraries expand operating hours FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Public Library is announced that all four of the library branches will offer expanded operating hours beginning Jan. 5. The hour changes were made possible by a funding increase from the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. The Cumming branch, Post Road branch, and Sharon Forks Libraries will be open until 8:30 p.m. three nights a week rather than two, and the Hampton Park Library will be open until 8:30 p.m. a second night a week. In addition, the Hampton Park Library will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays rather than 1 p.m. Prior to 2010, the library’s two branches at the time were open until 8:30 p.m. four evenings a week. In January of that year, open hours were decreased at the Cumming and Sharon Forks Libraries in order to help provide enough staffing to open the Hampton Park Library. In May 2011, the library was able to restore some of the hours that had been cut. All branches were open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on

SoundLab Music Studios gives musicians a place to rock out By RYAN PIERONI ryan@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — No more garages, basements or noise complaints for bands just trying to practice now that SoundLab’s around. SoundLab Music Studios, 2190 Brandon Trail in Alpharetta, provides 24-hour rehearsal space for bands and musicians in the Atlanta area. Bob Stewart, the owner of SoundLab and a musician himself, noticed the absence of a professional rehearsal studio north of Atlanta, and took the initiative. “You’re in people’s basements, you’re carrying your gear in and out; it’s a very uncomfortable situation.” said Stewart, who went on to describe the different units in the studio. The building has a multitude of units that can be rented out by bands for rehearsal, from rooms for hourly rehearsals to spaces rented monthly
with 24-hour access. Additionally, there is a larger showcase room where bands can set up in preparation for a stage performance. All rehearsal spaces at SoundLab are sound treated. SoundLab also has a recording studio in the building operated by Octagon Studios. The studio has hosted rehearsals for several professional bands, including Atlanta natives Cartel, Spanish metal band Ángeles del Infierno and Richard Smith of the Celebrity All-Star Band. “It’s a great room for us, real convenient. We can back the trailer up through the big bay door and unload everything,” said Smith, referring to the setup in which he and his band were rehearsing that day. SoundLab will be holding an open house Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. for musicians to come and check out the space and listen in on other bands’ jams. Their website is www.soundlabatlanta.com.

That helps them comply with their regiment and makes their overall health better for them. Dr. Jacob Varghese of Kaiser Permanente

Technology creeps into the medical world, one app at a time By KATHLEEN STURGEON news@northfulton.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Diabetes? There’s an app for that. Blood pressure monitoring? There’s an app for that. Electrocardiograph? Yes, there’s even an app for that. With the increase of technology, the use of technology in medicine is increasing as well. Doctors around the country are embracing the technological world of applications, or apps for short, and using them for the greater good. There are thousands of apps that smartphone users can download and use for their own benefit, whether good or bad. Dr. Jacob Varghese of Kaiser Permanente is a local doctor for Family Medicine in Forsyth County who is cautious when recommending apps to patients. “There are medical apps that I use that I wouldn’t want a patient using, mainly because sometimes patients get a little bit of information and they can misconstrue it the wrong way,” said Varghese. “There are apps like blood pressure apps and monitoring sugar, where they can monitor and keep track of things, which I like. There’s fitness ones that I like where I can tell patients to use where they can enter their weight and keep track of things.” Varghese sticks to recommending general health apps just to make patients’ lives easier, and tries to stray away from apps that tell patients how to live. “There are apps like Epocrates where I’d worry if a patient used it, because they’d come back and say ‘oh I read this online that it could mean this,’” said Varghese. “Then it goes down rabbit trails, which may not be applicable to them, but they don’t realize that involves a different level.” Epocrates is mainly for doctors to use to figure out how much of a dosage to give patients, or choose which prescription would be best for them.
“There are apps that I use to help me with clinical diagnosis and medical information, pharmacology, those kinds of things that help make my diagnosis and assessment of patients easier,” said Varghese. “It’s nice to not have to worry about keeping everything straight when the tools can help us make better decisions.” Deciding which apps to recommend to patients takes Varghese a lot of time to decide. “The ones I recommend are ones I’ve heard from other doctors or patients who’ve used it and I’ve seen it firsthand how it looks like,” said Varghese. “I’m always weary to the apps that are out there. You have to vet it to some extent
that it is a useful one.” Varghese said the apps are useful for helping patients remember to write down their blood pressure or sugar intake if they need to because they usually have their cellphone on them, but not a piece of paper. “If they’re on a medication reminder program, it beeps at the prescribed times for them to help them remember to take their medication,” said Varghese. “That helps them comply with their regiment and makes their overall health better for them.” Making patients healthy is Varghese’s main goal, and he said he can understand why apps are becoming so popular.
“My hope is down the road, technology will be even better and there’ll be better products out there for patients to use,” said Varghese. “Anything that a patient can improve taking medication and improve their health is a useful tool.” Non-technologically savvy patients may find it difficult, confusing or hard to use apps. Varghese said he works with his patients and can usually tell if apps will work if they say they don’t use email. “If we still have to use some of the ‘older’ methods, like writing down their blood pressure,” said Varghese, “ultimately it’s work with the patient that’s most relevant for them.”

4 real estate New Year’s Getting off to a fast resolutions to consider start in the New Year As you ‘re reading this column, we are transitioning into the New Year, that time each year when we all say to ourselves that we’ll exercise more, lose weight, maybe read more. It’s right before we grab a beer, a bag of chips and sit down on the couch to watch a movie, right? I have four real estate resolutions to consider this year and they’re easy to do: 1.If you’re selling, remove the wall paper and then paint. Sellers like to avoid doing this because it’s a pain, tending to think that painting is something easy a buyer can look past. But buyers think the same way, so take this simple fix off the table. 2.Buyers should get qualified and locked in on a mortgage rate. The Fed is tapering, slowing their purchases of mortgage backed securities and treasuries. This won’t result in an immediate jump in interest rates, but it most assuredly means rates will be rising this year. 3.Sellers should be surgical with

their pricing. Inventory and competition will start early, the goal when going on the market is to get the next offer made. 4.Buyers, there will be a lot of new construction out there this spring. It’s easy to get mesmerized by the “shiny and new.” New construction may be the right choice, but don’t overlook resales that might need updates. You can get a lot for less. In the end, you could wind up with a better lot and more space for the same price after those updates.
Now that the holiday season is over, it’s back to work for small business owners. Are you prepared to get off to a fast start in the New Year? Have you established all of your goals and objectives? Getting off to a fast start is very important for most small business owners to reach their annual objectives. So how do you start fast in the New Year? Hopefully you’ve spent the past few months putting together your plans for next year. If not, now is the time to do that! An overall plan should outline your annual objectives and strategies for achieving them, and also allows you to define what needs to get done now and what can be done later. Getting off to fast start is all about what can be done now! In other words, what are your goals for January? Do you need to contact all of your existing customers? Is it more important to schedule meetings with new prospects? Is the time right to an-

nounce new products or services you are offering? Everyone, including you, should have very specific objectives for the first month of the year. And for every objective, there should be a list of tasks and activities to make them happen. The beginning of a new year isn’t about planning, it’s about executing. It’s about getting things done and gaining momentum that will build through the first quarter and set the tone for annual success. Getting off to a fast start in the New Year is key to having a great year for your small business.

Therapy dog helps school children to read Roswell woman visits schools with rescued pup By JADE RODGERS jade@northfulton.com ROSWELL, Ga. – Outside of a classroom setting, most people would not consider reading to be a group activity, but on Nov. 6, Roswell resident Gail Goldberg proved that notion wrong. Goldberg, a retired kindergarten teacher, is now a volunteer for Therapy Dogs International. TDI hosts a program called Tail Waggin’ Tutors that promotes literacy in children by allowing kids to read books to therapy dogs. Paired with her Great Pyrenees partner, Biscuit, Goldberg helps children throughout Georgia to improve their reading abilities. Learning to read is a challenge for many children, and the stress of reading aloud in a classroom can be counterproductive to a child’s self-esteem. “For a child to have the opportunity to sit beside a warm, fuzzy, calm dog and show the dog their book and read it to them, has been shown to give that child an activity to look
Roswell resident Gail Goldberg and her Great Pyrenees partner, Biscuit, reads to children, helping them learn how to read themselves. forward to and relish,” Goldberg said. “As the child reads or shares their book with a dog such as Biscuit, the teacher can observe where the weaknesses are and target them in her lessons. It’s just a win-win all the way around, and the dogs really enjoy visiting with the children.” It takes a special kind of animal to be a therapy dog,
and Biscuit’s story is an inspiring one. Biscuit was abandoned in the back of an apartment building in Tennessee at the tender age of 4 months. She was tied to a tree and left with little food and water. A neighbor heard her cries and called animal rescue services. From there, Biscuit went on to live in different foster homes throughout Georgia before
residing with Goldberg and her husband; the couple instantly noticed Biscuit’s loving and magnetic personality. Goldberg had a professional U.S. Customs canine trainer work with Biscuit for seven months before submitting her for the therapy dog test at Therapy Dogs International. Biscuit passed with flying colors and joined Goldberg in her
mission to help children with their confidence in reading. Goldberg and Biscuit accomplished quite a goal when they visited Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family Center in Marietta Nov. 6. Handler and dog went to each classroom full of children, acquainting the students with the colossal canine that weighs in at 140 pounds. Despite her intimidating size, the Great Pyrenees is an incredibly gentle giant. Biscuit inspired smiles amongst the children as they approached to pet her. This visit in particular was distinct for Biscuit because it marked her 150th therapy visit within two years. In honor of this accomplishment, the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy donated 150 books to Sheltering Arms in Biscuit’s name. Goldberg and Biscuit distributed the books, some of which included Goldberg’s own book, “Animals A-Z: Poems for Early Readers.” Together, Goldberg and Biscuit make a wonderful team and will continue their mission of improving child literacy. Irish pub book arrives after blizzards’ delay Midwest storms held up copies By HATCHER HURD hatcher@northfulton.com MILTON, Ga. – The new book on Irish pubs by local author/ photographer Robert Meyers has been much anticipated, but only now has become available locally because of ice storms in the Midwest. “Irish Pubs in America: History, Lore and Recipes” came about as an idea by Meyers and friend Ron Wallace to explore the phenomenon of Irish pubs and their effect on American culture. That led to their sojourn from Boston to Honolulu visiting more than 100 pubs, which were culled down to 52 in the book. “These pubs were a stopping off place for communities,” Meyers said. “They stopped off on their way home from work, after athletic
events, weddings and funerals – all of the events of their lives. And often, they were the only cheerful place they had. “But they were a jumping off place, too,” he said. “Often, it was an Irish pub like Sorley’s in New York that put up newly arrived immigrants and gave them a job and a room until they could launch themselves into America.” Meyers explores the richness of life these pubs bring into a community that is unique to the Irish pub alone. And then there are the recipes that make an Irish pub distinct as well. With each richly made photograph comes the personal story of each pub, shaped and shaping the communities in which they sit. But really, an Irish pub in Honolulu? Wallace says there is not one, but two, and they are on opposite corners near

Standby generators can increase home resale value (NAPSI)—For the first time in a long time, home remodel costs are trending in a positive direction for homeowners looking to add value with cost-effective projects. According to a recent study by Remodeling, the average cost-to-value ratio has increased to 60.6 percent.
Recouping On A Remodel
twitter.com/forsythherald
The Remodeling report also said, regarding the national average for midrange home remodeling projects costing less than $12,000 that still recoup at least half of their cost: • A steel entry door replacement increases resale value by 85.6 percent of its cost. • A garage door replacement increases resale value by 75.7 percent of its cost. • A fiberglass entry door replacement increases resale value by 65.9 percent of its cost. • A wood deck addition increases resale value by 77.3 percent of its cost. • A vinyl window replacement increases resale value by 71.2 percent of its cost. • A wood window replacement increases resale value by 73.3 percent of its cost. • A backup power generator increases
resale value by 52.7 percent of its cost.
Why Remodel Meanwhile, you and your family can enjoy the comfort and savings that these improvements provide. For example, the backup power generator, also known as a standby or home generator, can offer your family peace of mind during emergencies and natural disaster. During a power outage, standby generators provide a seamless supply of power using a transfer switch and power management system. This lets you run appliances such as sump pumps, air conditioners, heaters, refrigerators, clothes washers, dryers and lights. “Any time a homeowner can choose a remodeling project that increases the home’s livability while also recouping a large chunk of the project investment it’s a great idea,” said Amanda Grandy of Briggs & Stratton, one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of home standby generators.
