Michael Greene, director of tennis at Fowler Park’s tennis center, plays a match with Carl Davis.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Michael Greene, director of tennis at the Fowler Park Tennis Center, knows what it takes to be a great tennis player. “Having some natural ability is part of the formula, but having that internal drive, that desire is important,” Greene said. “I like to teach, without even saying it to people, the love of the game first.” Greene, who has about 25 years of experience teaching tennis, said depending on where players are on the spec-

trum of skill — physical and mental — he’d like to coach them and meet the players’ goals. Fowler Park’s tennis center is the county’s latest private lesson program, launched in the fall last year. The tennis program, although in its infancy, has come under a lot of criticism, according to Forsyth County commissioners. Commissioners Todd Levent and Cindy Jones Mills have said emails complaining that charging to use the tennis courts at the county park are “double taxation.” “It was a shock for people,” Levent said. But Greene said he’s offering much more to county resi-

The plan is to continue making this a strong national event with top teams from each region represented, said Krista Judge, a spokeswoman for the event. Anna Taylor Barlow, director of tourism for the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, said organizers were thrilled with the parks in the area on a recent visit. “I have been pursuing them to come to a site visit for quite a while and they finally came and loved it,” Barlow said.

Organizers of the Triple Crown/USA Nationals were also happy with the area’s proximity to Atlanta as people from all over the country will be traveling here for the tournament. Other locations the tournament has taken place at include Lake Tahoe/Reno, Nev. and New York. This year, the teams will be playing at 32 fields in Forsyth County, eight fields in Alpharetta and eight fields around Lake Lanier. The top 100 18U teams

Parked truck hit by stolen truck CUMMING, Ga. — A woman heard a truck strike her vehicle while she was inside her home, but the driver fled the scene by the time she went outside, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. At about 8 p.m. Jan. 1, a woman in the 5000 block of Hedge Brook Drive told deputies she heard a truck hit her 2000 Toyota Tundra while she was inside her home. A neighbor told the woman she did not see who was driving, but the truck looked like the one owned by a man she knew. Deputies went to the man’s home, but he did not answer. About three hours later, deputies got an anonymous call from an acquaintance of the man. The caller said the man had just woken up and saw his truck had been stolen from his garage. At about 2 a.m., Jan. 2, the man called 911 to report his stolen truck. When deputies arrived at his home, they saw his garage door closed, which meant the thief took the time to close the garage door from the outside before leaving the

When she returned, she also found her rear passenger window shattered. The only thing she said was missing was a white bag that contained recycled bags. Two other women said their unlocked parked cars had items taken. One woman

Thief steals $67K in valuables from car CUMMING, Ga. — Someone broke into a car and made out with about $67,190 in valuables, according to a Cumming Police incident report. At about 6 p.m. Dec. 23, officers were dispatched to Los Rios, 580 Atlanta Road, because someone broke into a man’s 2012 Cadillac Escalade. The rear window was shattered and a duffel bag, briefcase and the vehicle owner’s manual were missing. The man said the duffel bag contained two watches totaling $65,000, $200 headphones, $200 sunglasses and two Rolls Royce keys valued at $500 a piece. The $200 briefcase contained his diabetic bag with his insulin needles, blood monitors and various medications totaling $600. The man said he saw a white sport utility vehicle pull up next to his Escalade while he was inside the restaurant, but he was unable to give the make or model of the car. Officers saw blood on the

The other woman said she realized when she got home that her $1,200 purse and $200 iPhone were taken. “We have increased our patrols,” said Forsyth County Deputy Doug Rainwater. “The problem is that this crime takes under 20 seconds to commit.” The sheriff’s office urges people to keep their valuables out of sight.

Angry father issued ‘warning’ CUMMING, Ga. — When a woman failed her driver’s test, her father became upset and drove off enraged, according to a Cumming Police incident report. At about noon Jan. 4, officers were dispatched to the Department of Driver Services, 400 Aquatic Circle, because a man was honking his horn and behaving inappropriately. A DDS employee told officers the man’s daughter had failed her driving test after she came to a sudden stop on the road and was almost rear-ended by another car. After she failed, the father grew angry and loud, the report stated. Then, they got into their car and drove away. The father was behind a car being driven by a woman taking her driver’s test and a DDS tester. The DDS tester said a man in a white car got behind them, followed very closely and started honking his horn. He continued to follow them while on the road test and almost “side-swiped them.” The man finally passed them, and the DDS tester indentified the man as the angry father. As he passed, he gave them

“the finger” and drove away. Officers later located the father, and he admitted to giving them “the finger” and being upset at DDS for failing his daughter. Officers issued him a criminal trespass warning.

Shoplifter puts up fight CUMMING, Ga. — A woman caught shoplifting would not go down without a fight, according to a Cumming Police incident report. The loss prevention officer of Home Depot, 1000 Market Place Boulevard, told officers they had a woman in their office because she was shoplifting. The woman put a plastic yellow bag that already contained several items inside a shopping cart. She was seen on video surveillance in the plumbing section and paint section putting items in her cart. She was seen going to the return desk where the line was very long. Officers said it looks as if she got tired of waiting and went to the garden section. She made her way to the front where she retuned the shopping cart to an employee. She took out her yellow bag that contained the items she selected from the store. The two prevention officers stopped her outside the store.

Discount prescription savings program offered Could save residents 75 percent over retail price By ALDO NAHED aldo@forsythherald.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — County residents looking for affordable prescription drugs can now enroll in a program that can save up to 55 percent annually on more than 60,000 brand name and generic drugs. “With health care costs on the rise, prescription drug discounts will help ease some of the financial burdens individuals and families are facing at a time when they need it the most,” said Forsyth County Commission Chairman Pete Amos. “There are no eligibility requirements so the prescrip-

tion card is expected to have a sizeable impact on uninsured residents or residents facing high insurance deductibles. “If a particular drug isn’t covered under a person’s health plan, they can use the card to save on those prescriptions.” The Coast2Coast Rx discount card, which is accepted at major chains and many independent pharmacies, could provide a resource that can save up to 75 percent on a single prescription off the retail price of the drug. The card, which is distributed free of charge, also offers discounts on dental,

vision, hearing and veterinary services, diabetic equipment and supplies, lab and imaging services as well as discounts on most pet prescriptions. Cardholders save on both brand name and generic drugs, and all family members can use the card. The Coast2Coast Rx card will allow all county residents, regardless of income, age or health status to participate in the program and save on the cost of their medications. This program will come at no expense to the county. The card will be available for residents at most par-

ticipating pharmacies and various county government offices and facilities, including the County Administration Building, libraries and health facilities. Residents will also be able to print the prescription card and view the nearest participating locations at www.coast2coastrx.com/ counties/ga/forsyth.

This newly extended center turning lane will help improve traffic flow on Ga. 20 in Cumming. Work concluded Dec. 31, 2013. “We widened SR 20 to create an additional 600 feet of center turning lane. This new area will improve the overall operation of SR 20 by allowing left turners to get out of the traffic flow, eliminating backups in the immediate area. I believe it will make a big difference to the people who use the roadway daily,” said Rudy Bowen, GDOT board member. Bowen, of Suwanee, represents the 7th Congressional District including southern Forsyth County on the State Transportation Board.

The quick response program allows low cost, operational improvements to be made to the state route system. Projects are identified by GDOT engineers or city/ county staff, and then managed through the Office of Local Grants. This improvement cost $59,510.35. “Small changes can make a big change in your commute. The quick response program is a tool specifically for work typically costing less than $200,000,” said Bowen. “As we work to improve the state route system in northeast Georgia, please share your ideas with us by using our website, www. dot.ga.gov.” –Aldo Nahed

Tennis: Continued from Page 1 dents and so far, many have taken notice. About 70 yearly memberships, or about 80 families, have already signed up at Fowler. Greene said in addition to managing the 12 courts, they also re-string tennis rackets and offer lessons. “People have been telling us they are really happy we are here,” Greene said. The county entered into the three-year agreement with Knoxville, Tenn.-based Annacone Tennis last year. There are no costs to the

county to run the programs at Fowler Park; however, there are revenue streams that will be bounced the county’s way when it comes to lessons and camps. The county gets 50 percent on guest fees, memberships and court rentals, while also making 10 percent on lessons and 5 percent on junior camps. Yearly memberships, which are not mandatory, run $50 for a junior player to $200 for a family pass. Seniors pay $100 per year and all members get to bring a guest 12 times. The court fees are $2.50 per person per hour for non-members. The courts are open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday

Annacone has since renewed their commitment to the county, invested thousands of dollars in improving the courts and have more recently changed their pay structure to allow more free play to county residents. Before and after pro-shop hours (before 9 a.m. and after 9 p.m.), the courts don’t cost anything and all day Friday, players who walk up can check in and if there’s a court available, they will play at no cost. “We are trying to demonstrate to the community that we are here and that we are a partner with them,” Greene said. “We are tennis players,

By MCKENZIE CUNNINGHAM news@forsythherald.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A local doctor and her 9-yearold twin sons have published a children’s book, “War of the Gods.” The authors, Dr. Justine Borrego, an internal medicine physician at Northside Hospital-Forsyth, and her sons, Juan David and Marco Antonio, also illustrated the book. The mythology-filled book follows young Justin as he gets into a chimera box, a plain cardboard box that enables someone to travel wherever and become whomever they want. “Justin is transformed into a Greco-Roman warrior and needs to find the hero within himself, perform several difficult tasks, slay monsters and save the trapped gods from Zeus and Jupiter,” Justine Borrego said. The Borregos have been writing short stories and paragraphs together since the boys were 5 years old. “My sons mentioned to me at an early age that they wanted to write a book,” Borrego said. “This short story just continued and turned into a book.” “War of the Gods,” which can be purchased for $10.99, is a 60-page tome and the first in the Chimera Box Series. Cornerstone School actors put twist on classic tale of ‘Cinderella’ CUMMING, Ga. – The Cornerstone School drama club in Cumming recently performed two fractured fairy tales based on the classic tale of “Cinderella.” The first performance, “Spiderella,” portrayed Cinderella from a bug’s world. These charming characters acted and danced their way through the rainforest and concluded with a happy bug ending, Spiderella and the Cicada Prince. “Bubba the Cowboy Prince,” written by Helen Ketteman, took a real Texan twist of Cinderella. This western setting used real cowboys and even a fairy god cow. Music and dancing were

Cultivating the Desire to Learn

Deputy of the Year awardees celebrated By CAITLYN WALTERS walters@northfulton.com CUMMING, Ga. — After a smooth transitional year, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office wanted to celebrate with staff, family and friends to honor deputies who produced a year’s worth of exceptional work. On Jan. 9, majors, deputies and administrative staff gathered at Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center, 3410 Ronald Reagan Boulevard, and reminisced about the year. “There have been a lot of changes,” Sheriff Duane Piper said. “But that change could not have been possible without all of you.” Chief Deputy Michael Giordano said the office is proud that everyone came together during the transition, and looks forward to the future. In addition to honoring Deputy of the Year awardees, Giordano said this was an idea to bring tradition to the sheriff’s office. After the meal and the presentation of colors, Maj. Matt Hester, Maj. Mark Hoffman and Maj. Rick Doyle presented Deputy of the Year awards to deputies in each of their divisions. “The drive and support I got from every particular division that worked for me was amazing,” Hester said. “They truly accomplished miracles.” Hester honored Deputy Brandon Keenan with Sheriff’s Services Deputy of the Year award. Hester said Keenan’s professionalism during a multi-car accident stood out. Hoffman honored Cpl. Brandon Wiley with the Uniform Patrol Section Deputy of the Year award. Hoffman said Wiley has worked for the office for over 10 years and has worked in several positions. This year, Wiley has been recognized for a total of 118 arrests, 32 DUI arrests and 30 drug arrests. “Wiley is looked up to mentor deputies in the office since he has been assigned to the case unit,” Hoffman said. “He has become a valued member and leader.” Doyle honored Deputy

It was a play on the family name, and it said our company goal — to render a service to our customers. Ron Redner, CEO of Render Ad Service

Family-owned business into third generation Roswell’s Render Ad Service celebrates 40th anniversary By HATCHER HURD hatcher@northfulton.com ROSWELL, Ga. – In 1974, Bill Redner and his wife Betty sat down in their kitchen to start a new advertising business. Forty years and three generations later, Render Ad Service not only survives — it thrives. Render Ad deals in promotional products and has a catalog of 1 million items that can bear a client’s logo, website and contact number. From Madison Avenue to the local newspaper, the essence of all advertising is to keep clients in the public’s consciousness. One of the best ways is to put a logo on coffee cups, apparel, hats, plaques, trophies, calendars – the list is endless. Render provides these as well as other services. On the website, Render Ad has what it calls its Idea Center that gives customers ideas on what can work best for them to put their name in front of customers and keep it there. And while Render Ad began in 1974, that wasn’t the beginning of its story. “My dad was the regional vice president of the company he worked for, but it was bought out by a bigger company, and he had decided he did not like the direction it was going in,” said his son Ron Redner, who is the chief execu-

HATCHER HURD/Staff

The Redners, staff and family gather at Bulloch Hall for a celebration of Render Ad Service’s 40th anniversary. The advertising company has been one of Roswell’s most successful family businesses. tive officer today. So literally in his kitchen, the elder Redner plotted the future of the Redner family. “My mom loved to do crossword puzzles, and she came up the name for the company, Render,” he said. “It was a play on the family name, and it said our company goal — to render a service to our customers.” In those early days, calendars were a big part of the business. Salesmen sold the order and got their commission. But the calendars sold all year would only be paid for on delivery, usually in December. “Dad had enough savings and was able to get a loan from the old Roswell Bank. That was

paid off in the second year,” Redner said. While the elder Redner started his company in 1974, he began working in advertising in 1946. So he was able to take many loyal customers when he started his new company. He also brought along loyal sales people as well. This includes Bob Fitzgerald, who became vice president of the company. When Bill Redner retired in 1996, son Robert took over as CEO. In 2006, he retired, and son Ron became CEO. Grandson Troy Redner, Robert’s son, took up the vice president position when Fitzgerald retired. “Our brother Rick didn’t

stay with the company. But all my brothers and sisters went through that gate before going on to other careers,” he said. Now, the third generation is stepping up ready to keep Render Ad going forward. Render Ad is about ideas as much as about products. Ron Redner won a national award for designing a campaign to introduce Ted Turner’s Cartoon Network to cable execs. His first idea was a polyester barrel gym bag with each end having a film reel to maintain the shape and filled with cartoon characters and other related items. Turner rejected that idea because his then-wife Jane

Fonda wanted something more eco-friendly. So Redner came up with the idea incorporating the Road Runner cartoon character of Wile E. Coyote. He would exchange the polyester bag for a wooden box stamped with the iconic “Acme Co.” logo that contained so many of Coyote’s ill-fated gadgets. The box filled with 100 percent cotton T-shirts and other goodies inside received Fonda’s OK and won Redner his award. Looking to the future, Redner is banking on their Web store acting as the drop-ship point of contact. That allows for just-in-time inventory and fast delivery.

Growing your small business North Fulton home sales end year on strong note It’s a new year, but the No. 1 one priority for small businesses is still the same. Growing revenue is still at the top of the list for the majority of small business owners. So what are you doing to ensure that you achieve your growth goals? Have you evaluated different options you can utilize to generate more business? Now is the time to plan, document and execute new revenue generating initiatives! A good starting point is to focus on your existing customers. What are your plans to retain them and expand the amount of business they do with you? Do you have new products or services you could offer? Getting existing customers to buy more than they did last year will provide some great impetus to revenue growth. What about new customers? How are you attracting new customers to your business? What are your marketing plans? Have you scheduled events or meetings to build

relationships with potential customers? Attracting new business is also essential to revenue growth. What are you doing to make your sales process more effective and efficient? Closing business faster, selling larger transactions and beating the competition more often will help you reach your sales goals quicker. Ensuring that your sales team has well-defined goals and fully understands your growth strategy is also very important. While small business owners have a lot of challenges on their mind, achieving revenue growth continues to be a top priority for the new year.

It is that time of year where we tend to look forward, making predictions on what will happen in the coming months. It’s also valuable to look back at this time to see where we have been and how things have improved – or in the case of years past, how things have declined. There is no surprise here that real estate values in our area have improved, but the amount of improvement is very encouraging. Comparing home sales data for the fourth quarter of 2013 to 2012, you can see the number of sales was basically

price was up 8 percent from one year ago. When you have sales prices rise at a higher rate than asking prices, it means properties are selling closer to asking price. Low inventory helps with that. Homes were taking 40 percent less time to sell on average and, while it isn’t reflected in the chart below, North Fulton had approximately four months of inventory at the end of 2012 compared to three months at the end of last year. Next week, I’ll share the sales data for Forsyth County.

Costco plans cause fervor, Walmart – not so much With Costco Wholesale moving forward with a Cumming location, social media lit up with enthusiasm. Local realtors, loyal shoppers and those looking for a place to work rejoiced with hundreds of shares and comments. In my years covering community news, I have never seen a retail store cause so much excitement. On the other hand, when plans for a third Walmart location in south Forsyth County were announced last year, the joy was not as fervent. What makes a Costco so much more desired than a Walmart? Even though both retailers offer customers low prices on merchandise, I think there’s a lot to be said about employee satisfaction (and free samples). While Costco is the secondlargest retailer in the U.S. behind Walmart, workplace happiness at Costco remains high; while Walmart keeps

making national headlines with workers asking for better pay and more benefits. Costco’s hourly workers average $21 an hour, and starting pay is about $11.50 per hour. Walmart has said the average wage for its full-time employees in the U.S. is $12.67 per hour, with starting pay at about $8.50. The state’s minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Some Wall Street analysts have said Costco is overly generous, not only to customers but to its workers as well. But in the last five years, Costco has grown 39 percent and its stock price has doubled since

Even though both retailers offer customers low prices on merchandise, I think there’s a lot to be said about employee satisfaction (and free samples). 2009. Craig Jelinek, Costco’s chief executive officer, told Bloomberg News last summer that people need to make a living wage with health benefits. “It also puts more money back into the economy and creates a healthier country,” Jelinek said. “It’s really that simple.” I don’t think Jelinek is saying minimum wage should be $18 per hour, but paying a higher wage can be a good business model, history has shown.

In 1914, Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company, started an industrial revolution by more than doubling wages to $5 from about $2.38. A mere $5 in 1914 had the buying power equal to $116 in today’s market, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator. The first cars Ford had built in number, the 1903 Model N, cost about $3,000, or $70,000 in today’s money. Henry Ford saw the advantages of paying a high wage for productivity, and yes, sales.
