Shots fired »
Drug deal goes bad CUMMING, Ga. — A man said someone shot at him, but he wasn’t exactly honest about why it happened, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s report. At about 10 p.m. Jan. 21, deputies were dispatched to a home in the 4000 block of Longmont Drive because homeowners in the Starcreek Forest subdivision heard shots fired. The victim told deputies he was driving home from a friend’s house inside the subdivision when he saw a truck driving at him in the same lane. They pulled beside each
other and exchanged a few words before the driver fired a shot at him. The victim said the driver followed him as he drove to his home. He said another shot was fired as he reached the home, and then the driver took off. The victim’s father was in the home and told deputies he heard the shot fired. Deputies said they found two pieces of a bullet with a copper casing inside the victim’s tire. While deputies removed

Congressman Jack Kingston and Senate hopeful stumps at the Republican Women of Forsyth County meeting.
Kingston campaigns at Forsyth GOP meet By ALDO NAHED aldo@forsythherald.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Republican Women of Forsyth County continued their series of introducing candidates to voters on Monday, Jan. 27, when a U.S. Senate hopeful addressed the group at the Norman’s Landing Restaurant. There are five GOP candidates vying for the U.S. Senate post being vacated by retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss. District 1 U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, who represents a 17-county area of southeast Georgia including Savannah, said he wants the country to be drilling its own oil and creating more jobs instead of expanding welfare programs. “I’m worried about the American Dream,” Rep. Kingston told attendees. “I’m worried
that big intrusive government is interfering with our lives, is running up our national debt and is going to steal our opportunities and our freedoms.” Republican Senate candidates also include Rep. Paul Broun; Rep. Phil Gingrey; Karen Handel, former gubernatorial candidate and Georgia Secretary of State, and David Perdue, former CEO of Dollar General. Michelle Nunn is running on the Democratic side. Nunn ran former President George H.W. Bush’s Points of Light Foundation. Julie Tressler, president of the Republican Women, has plans to hear from all of senate hopefuls before the May 20 primary. A runoff is expected to take place in July. For more information on the Republican Women’s group, visit www.rwfc.org.

Later in the day, Cumming Police investigators arrested a man also in connection with the marijuana bust.
Investigators arrested Knolton Albert Leaphart, 35, a manager at American Lube Fast in Cumming. This is an ongoing investigation and more details will be available at a later date, said Lt. Bryan Zimbardi with the Cumming Police Department.

State and county leaders are planning to put a Ga. 400 exit off McGinnis Ferry Road on the border of Fulton and Forsyth counties. this effort. “We believe this has a great potential to aid economic development in the county,” Dudgeon said. Some of the traffic in South Forsyth may soon be alleviated with a new south and northbound on and off ramp at McGinnis Ferry Road and Ga. 400. The new Ga. 400 interchange would create new exits between the existing Windward Parkway exit 11 and McFarland Parkway exit 12. While construction funding for a Ga. 400 interchange has not yet been determined, Geor-
gia Department of Transportation also plans to utilize federal funds previously earmarked for the project to begin preliminary design work this year. “Property owners came to us with the CID proposal and are excited about banding together to help fund the interchange,” said Rep. Mark Hamilton of Cumming. “We have worked with Georgia DOT and the governor’s office, and having this local funding mechanism will greatly expedite getting the project on the five-year state plan.” —Aldo Nahed

The Best Breakfast in Atlanta is in Alpharetta. ON WINDWARD PARKWAY
E
ating breakfast can be just a meal or it can be an event. It can be an event because the food is so fresh, so made from scratch, so healthy and savory that, well, it’s no longer just eating. It becomes an indulgence — a reward you give yourself.
You take your time and enjoy the conversation. You relish the meal. It’s like the difference between drinking Starbucks® coffee instead of convenience store coffee. Or as the famous commercial we all know says, using Grey Poupon® instead of mustard. Or drinking fresh squeezed orange juice instead of concentrate. The Original Pancake House turns your breakfast into an event that helps you get through the week – something that you can look forward to and enjoy instead of just having a meal. Enjoy our various breakfast courses, ranging from sausage and eggs to french crepes. All made from scratch. All fresh. All indulgently delicious.
The Apple Pancake: Our Apple Pancakes are a great
example of the quality and preparation that goes into all our breakfast courses:
We peel and slice fresh, tart and tangy Granny Smith apples. The apples are placed in an eight inch skillet and lightly sautéed in clarified butter. Next, the egg based German batter is added from a batch that was made fresh that morning. The skillet is then placed in a 200 degree oven for approximately 45 minutes. At this temperature the German batter will solidify, but will not bake. Then the skillet is removed from the oven and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, the pancake is flipped over and baked in a 450 degree oven. At this point the German batter will rise in the skillet as it bakes and the cinnamon sugar mixture on the bottom begins to caramelize. After approximately 15 minutes of bake time The Apple Pancake is flipped back over onto a plate, and served. The Apple Pancake is very large when it comes out of the oven, but after it is served, it will shrink on your plate right before your eyes as it cools. Even though it takes over an hour to prepare one of these pancakes, we are always baking one, so it should not be much more than 10 to 15 minutes before you can enjoy your fresh Apple Pancake after it is ordered.

CUMMING, Ga. — Londyn Lomax is a second grader at Daves Creek Elementary School who started a project to help create awareness in the community, solve problems and encourage fellow classmates to do good. As part of his Ultimate Black Belt Test, a 12-month process of achieving goals and overcoming obstacles, Londyn was asked to do a community project. Londyn launched a “Random Act of Kindness Cam-
paign” at his school that will take place during National Random Act of Kindness Week (Feb. 10 through Feb.16). “This [campaign] gives everybody a chance to do something nice for someone else,” Londyn said. Londyn is challenging all second grade classes to compete to see which class can perform the most random acts of kindness in a one week period. The winning class will get a pizza party, Londyn said. So far, three classes have agreed to participate. Londyn and his mom Tonika Lomax designed the cards
and plan to give the teachers a bunch of these to hand out to students if the teacher spots them doing nice things for other people. The students may not ask a teacher for a card and only unique acts per class will earn points. Also, the acts of kindness don’t require the use of money. “The students have to write down what they did on the back of each card and place them in a box to be counted,” Tonika said. “To encourage acts of kindness while away from school, students may also bring notes signed by adults stating what act was performed. At the end of the week, my son will tally up all cards and notes to determine the winner.”

Digital projects highlighted at Tech Fair Students from grades 3-12 now move to state competition By ALDO NAHED aldo@forsythherald.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Tech Fair showcased students excited to delve into the digital world. From computer programming and multimedia application design to robotics, the Jan. 25 event held at Whitlow Elementary School highlighted the direction schools are headed in the future, said Mike Evans, of the Forsyth County School System. “When we have third- and fourth-grade students programming computers, it says a lot about where we’re going as a system,” Evans said. Tom Lamb, who served as director of the Tech Fair for several years, headed the 40 volunteer judges who oversaw 147 projects created by 180 participants in third through 12th grades in public, private or home schools. Lamb is the state director and is a retired instructional technology specialist. Judges spent about 20 minutes with each participant or teams including Shiloh Point Elementary fifth-grader Abhay Kumar, 11. Kumar’s dad Manoj Appully said his son’s project in animated graphic design was created using PowerPoint. “We live in a high-tech world,” Appully said. “Hopefully, this keeps him interested in science and technology.” The event is along the lines
of Scholar Bowl, Science Fair and Science Olympiad, and allows students to build projects in 16 categories of technology. New this year is a mobile app design and a game design category. “A lot of times, they know a whole lot more than the judges do,” Lamb said. All first place winners in the Tech Fair advanced to the Georgia Educational Technology Fair competition to be held March 8 at the Macon campus of Middle Georgia State College and University. The first Forsyth County Educational Technology Fair was in 2001. It was the precursor to the Georgia Educational Technology Fair, which was started by Forsyth County Fair staff and was first held in 2002. Whitlow Elementary School’s Karen Daughtery, an instructional technology specialist and director of the Forsyth County Technology Fair, is also a regional director. There are 19 regions in Georgia, and Forsyth County is its own region in the state. “The Tech Fair is important in that it affords those students who are technologically inclined to participate in a regional and state level of competition outside of sports,” Daughtery said. A committee worked throughout the year to put the Tech Fair in Forsyth County together. For more information, visit http://www.gatechfair.org.

There’s a momentum through the marketplace ... We are seeing signs that the economy is moving. Paul Bowers, Georgia Power’s President and CEO
JOIN TODAY: 770-993-8806 • www.gnfcc.com
Ga. Power president talks economy, education, energy Bowers shares insight at Rotarian meeting By ALDO NAHED aldo@northfulton.com CUMMING, Ga. – With every segment of the economy touched by electricity, it’s easy for Paul Bowers, Georgia Power president and chief executive officer, to gauge strenght of the economy. The economy, education and energy were key points Bowers addressed at the Lanier-Forsyth Rotary Club meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 28. At Georgia Power, Bowers has a unique vantage point. “We see every segment of the market; we see what is happening in residential, commercial and industrial segment,” he said. The industrial segment includes steel, chemical and paper industries, plus Bowers serves in the federal bank’s energy council and he is constantly updated on what’s happening in the economy. For a perspective, Bowers said that from 2000 to 2008, Georgia Power on average added 45,000 customers per year. “You felt that, the boom was happening; you had houses built all over the place, commercial were going gangbusters, you had strip malls and different activities in the state,” he said. In 2009, after the great recession started, the company only added 4,000 new customers.

Georgia Power’s President and CEO Paul Bowers speaks at the Lanier-Forsyth Rotary Club on Tuesday, Jan. 28. In 2010, there were 7,500 customers added and in 2011, for the first time in the company’s history, there were customers lost. “Jobs were not being created and households were being consolidated and people moved back home,” Bowers said. “We saw the children that were out come home and make a consolidation.” In 2012, the company began to see an uptick by adding 16,000 customers. In 2013, it had 21,000 new customers. “There’s a momentum through the marketplace,” Bowers said. “We are seeing signs that the economy is moving.” But Bowers said there’s still work to be done to affect un-
employment in the state, which hovers around 7 percent. “We have a marketplace, entrepreneurs starting to take off. We are seeing a new opportunity for our kids,” Bowers said. Bowers was named Georgia Power president and CEO in December 2010. Georgia Power is the largest subsidiary of Southern Company. Prior to his current position, he was chief financial officer of Southern Company Bowers also serves on the boards of Nuclear Electric Insurance Ltd., the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, AFLAC and the Georgia Historical Society. He is chairman of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, past chair of the Georgia Partnership for Excel-
lence in Education and vice chair of the Georgia Department of Economic Development. Energy When it comes to energy, Bowers said, it’s critical to project 20 years to 30 years into the future. “We have to have affordable, reliable, dependable, sustainable energy,” Bowers said. Decisions made now, along with the Public Safety Commission, will affect prices. Energy consists of more than just electricity – it’s also coal, gas, hydro, solar, oil and nuclear. While coal plants, which used to produce 70 percent of the energy in the state and now produce 30 percent, have been closed around the state
because of more stringent environmental compliance standards, Bowers said the state has moved to a gas-dominant utility. About 50 percent of the energy produced in the state is coming from gas, he said. Renewable energy such as solar serve more as a supplemental source, Bowers said. Two additional nuclear units are being constructed at the company’s Plant Vogtle, located south of Augusta. The company expects to complete the plants by 2018. “It produces energy at 1 cent per kilowatt hour for the next 60 years,” Bowers said. “In America, there are four nuclear plants being built – two in Georgia and two in South Carolina.” Worldwide, there are 65 nuclear plants being constructed – with China building 29 nuclear plants, 10 in Russia, seven in India, four in South Korea and four in Turkey. Education Bowers called on Rotarians to set higher standards for education. While some who work for Georgia Power can make about $25 to $30 an hour, about 50 percent of applicants can’t pass a basic employment test. “We should be ashamed at the state; we’ve got to be engaged,” Bowers said. “We’ve got to be advocates and set the standards. “We as business leaders, me in particular, I want to make sure that every school in the state understands what we are looking for and hold them accountable for the output of the product.”

Condo and townhome sales remain solid Condominiums and townhomes, what we refer to in real estate as residential attached, remain in high demand and are often a great option for many types of buyers. For instance, they are a perfect option for young professionals or single buyers who don’t want the outside maintenance and lawn care. A townhome may be the most affordable way to get into a particular school district. Townhome and condo communities run the gambit, from small entry-level units with open parking to larger properties with one- or two-car garages, gated communities and luxury threelevel homes. Last year, there were 913 units sold in North Fulton, an increase of 25 percent, and 287 were sold in Forsyth County. The demand and number of sales has led to very low inventory in our area. Based on what is currently on the market, there are only 1.8 months of inventory for North Fulton and 2.5 months of inventory in Forsyth

County. The low inventory has a large and direct impact on prices. So it is no surprise that comparing year-over-year sales for December, we have experienced a huge increase in the average sales price in our area. In North Fulton, the average sales price was $205,183, which represents a 34 percent increase. In Forsyth County, the average sales price for December was $196,897, which was a jump of 28 percent over the previous year.

The three phases of buying Are you trying to get new customers to buy your products or use your services? Does the process of acquiring new customers take too much time? Do some potential customers never buy anything? New customers go through three phases of buying before they actually become customers, and knowing these phases will help you to accelerate the process and acquire new customers faster. The first phase in buying is that a potential customer must be aware that your business offers specific products or services. If no one knows what you do, and what products or services you offer, you’re probably not going to attract them to become a customer. Advertising, marketing, social media and word-of-mouth can help build awareness. The next phase is generating interest on the part of a potential buyer. To generate interest, your product or service has to appeal to the buyer in a way that they will want to learn more, see more and even try your product or service. Generating interest requires that you demonstrate the value your product or service can provide. No one
Dick Jones
Founder & President Jones Simply Sales
will want to spend their money unless they get something in return. Once awareness and interest are generated with a potential customer, the final stage of buying is motivating them to buy. This is best done by succinctly articulating the benefits of having your product or using your service. If a potential customer understands the value and benefits of your product, they will be much more likely to buy. Buyers typically go through these three stages of buying. They become aware, then interested, then motivated. Marketing and selling your product with this in mind will help you to acquire more customers faster!

Homeownership help
twitter.com/forsythherald
(NAPSI)—According to a survey by Harris Interactive, 75 percent of military families believe that owning a home is one of the most important things to service members upon returning from active duty. The reasons include a desire to have their own residence (73 percent), establishing a household (43 percent), and financial security (36 percent). In addition, the majority of veterans (88 percent) said that owning a home makes them feel safer. While one roadblock that veterans face in the pursuit of homeownership is securing steady employment, they display a generally positive attitude in regard to potential employers and positions. • More than two-thirds believe that employers appreciate their unique skills learned in the military, while the same 67 percent believe employers are eager to hire veterans. • It’s important to note, however, that nearly half agree that their skill set does not match the requirements for many available positions. • Only one in five considered opening their own business when they returned home from the military.
All totaled, finding a suitable home and employment and assimilating back into civilian life are challenges many veterans and their families face. Fortunately, services for veterans, including employment, mental health programs, housing and other special care services, are available. For example, Easter Seals provides direct services to the new and unmet needs of tens of thousands of service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and “Recruiting America’s Heroes,” offered by Century 21 Real Estate LLC, the franchisor of the world’s largest residential real estate sales organization, provides returning veterans who are interested in becoming real estate agents with specific benefits to make a smooth transition. Former military personnel get special training programs and continuing education courses, discounts, and waived annual global conference registration fees. Anyone interested in learning more about the resources available to active and retired service members can call the Easter Seals Community One Source Hotline, (866) 423-4981, e-mail veterans@easterseals.com or visit www. century21.com/aboutus/.

People are cool, not cold I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have experience driving in the snow. I found this out three years ago when our area was hit hard by something dubbed Winter Blast 2011 that apparently everyone forgot about last week. So it’s time to revive Twitter hashtags like snocation, snopocalypse, snomaggeddon, snOMG, Cluster Flake 2014 and Hoth-lanta (in the Star Wars movie, Hoth is a remote world covered in snow and ice). It’s all pertinent, and some hilarious people posted witty comments about an eerily familiar situation. A failure to put down rock salt was quickly mixed with commuters’ fear, and everyone froze on the backstreets, highways and intersections.
Even when most people with a television set knew there was a snowstorm coming, Tuesday morning looked so beautiful that there was no way anyone knew that by noon all hell would break loose. Hundreds of cars crashed or were abandoned, as 30-minute commutes became ninehour-long hell rides. Two people died, and one baby was born in traffic. For those who survived this, I want to remember the
good in people. Through social media, we were able to keep people posted on the latest. But some went beyond, like Michelle Sollicito, who created the SnowedOutAtlanta Facebook page after she was able to connect one friend with the husband of another who needed help. Soon, hundreds of people were being helped and paying it forward. When employees of the Target in Milton saw a school bus locked in traffic, they brought water and food for the students. There was a friend’s neighbor who kept going out to give complete strangers a hand, and some opened their shops and even their homes to complete strangers. One recurring storyline this time around that we didn’t
