The only good thing about

CONCUSSIONS is that they can be

T R E AT E D . Knowing the facts could save your athlete’s life. Recognition and proper management of concussions when they first occur can prevent further injury or even death. Most athletes can safely return to play after a concussion, but must recover at their own rate. The Concussion Institute at Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth is the first facility of its kind in the Southeast, and its experts help athletes return to the field as quickly, and as safely, as possible. Letter from the publisher Welcome to our Relocation Answer Book – our best one ever! We included more local and custom maps than any of our previous issues. We love maps because they give you great reasons to keep the Answer Book on your coffee table all year. In addition to all of the maps, there is plenty of important information that new and longtime residents will find useful. In addition to the maps, we have content for all readers. Whether you’re looking to get outdoors, shop, redecorate your house or if you just moved to the area and are wondering how to get your Georgia Driver’s License, this edition can help you. We now create four different Answer Books – one each quarter. We publish the education edition, the relocation edition, the medical edition and the lifestyles edition, in that order. All of these editions are great resources for residents. They are also incredibly wise advertising values. They tend to have a long shelf-life so your advertising investment keeps working throughout the year. And did I mention that all of our Answer Books are also available on NorthFulton.com? That’s an audience of more than 100,000 print readers in addition

to our online audience. If you missed out on advertising in this Answer Book, don’t fret. Just call us today at 770-442-3278 to get information on the next edition. All of the editions are great advertising buys. If you have suggestions about content that we might want to include in the next edition, let me know and we’ll consider your ideas! My email is Ray@AppenMediaGroup.com. The Answer Books are available to most chambers of commerce, cities, homeowner associations and real estate companies. MILTON

IN NORTH GEORGIA?

COMMUNITY LEADERS FROM ALPHARETTA, FORSYTH COUNTY, JOHNS CREEK, MILTON AND ROSWELL GIVE YOU AN INSIDE LOOK ON WHAT’S HAPPENING IN NORTH ATLANTA.

R.J. (Pete) Amos Chairman, Board of Commissioners

FORSYTH COUNTY

Welcome to Forsyth County! Take a look around and it is easy to see all of the great progress taking place in our community. More and more people have come to find Forsyth County’s natural resources, businesses, schools and location make this county the perfect place to call home. In fact, Forsyth County continues to be one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. The quality of life available to Forsyth County residents is second to none. For three consecutive years, Forsyth County has been named the healthiest county in Georgia by the annual County Health Rankings by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute. Being fit is a component of a healthy lifestyle and Forsyth County Parks and Recreation offers a variety of ways to stay active including three recreation centers and more than 20 parks to enjoy. And residents in Forsyth County enjoy some of the lowest tax rates in metro Atlanta – all while taking advantage of the award-winning parks and being served by top notch public safety

services. Compared to taxes paid by residents of many neighboring counties, Forsyth County’s taxes are lower on homes of the same value. With the high quality county programs available to residents and a stellar school system, I believe local residents are receiving an exceptional value for their tax dollar. No matter where you look, progress is evident in our community. Forsyth County voters recently approved a transportation bond to ensure our community is taking the lead in advancing road projects to help improve the daily commute. Building permits issued for new residential units continue an upward trend. Plans for more parks and improvements to existing amenities are currently underway. From a recently-opened new courthouse and new animal shelter to a new playground at Central Park, Forsyth County continues to progress and be a place people want to live, work and play. The opportunities are endless, and I look forward to continuing to thrive together as a community. R.J. (Pete) Amos Chairman, Forsyth County Board of Commissioners

Opening late summer/early fall 2015 The $9.4 million expansion of Bell Memorial from a 12-acre park with four baseball fields to a nearly 30-acre multi-use facility with both passive and active recreation options is now underway. To view monthly updates of progress on the project, click here. The new park design will have four dedicated diamond (baseball/softball) fields with centerfield dimensions of 180, 200, 200 and 280 feet. There will also be two rectangular fields lined for football, soccer and lacrosse. The second field can also be set up as a 200foot, fifth diamond field. Programming between spring, summer and fall will vary the configuration of four diamonds and two rectangular fields versus five diamonds and one rectangular field.

Crabapple City Center

Opening April 2017, construction begins in late 2015 In late May 2014 Milton’s City Council approved the issuance of a $10 million revenue bond in order to fund City Hall in historic downtown Crabapple. The bond means Milton taxpayers will not have to levy additional taxes or fees to build the municipal complex, set to open in April 2017. Plus, city funds will no longer be used to lease property taxpayers do not own - an important step to ensuring the most value for resident dollars. The City Hall complex, which will be located between Crabapple Road and the existing Braeburn development, is slated to include offices, council chambers, meeting areas for residents and a town green for expansion of special events in Crabapple.

Birmingham Road/ Hopewell Road intersection

Construction slated to begin in late spring/ early summer 2015 Identified in the city’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan as needing improvement, construction on this intersection should begin soon. After a public involvement period and traffic studies, city engineers decided on a plan including a roundabout to relieve traffic and improve safety at the busy intersection. These are just a few of the huge projects Milton has on tap in the coming months. Visit our city Web site, www.cityofmiltonga.us, to see much, much more. Joe Lockwood Mayor of Milton

JOHNS CREEK

E

As a young city of less than a decade, Johns Creek lives by our tagline, “Be the Exception.” People choose our city because of the exceptional quality of life it offers. Our nationally recognized and award-winning schools make our community highly desirable, attracting great citizens that add to a diverse culture. Johns Creek offers a supportive business climate that invites innovation and nurtures an entrepreneurial spirit. Our wealth of activities and facilities, such as nationally recognized golf and tennis clubs, youth sports fields, river access and interconnected greenways promote a healthy lifestyle. Our Johns Creek Veterans Memorial Park, Park Place senior center, and even a nationally recognized dog park all reside alongside an outdoor amphitheater, walking trails and playgrounds where generations can lead an enriched life. A robust and growing local arts and culture community enriches our citizens with creative expression and enjoyment. Our Johns Creek Symphony, Johns Creek Art Center, Autrey Mill Nature Preserve, local

arlier this year, our pastor asked us “what breaks your heart?” And, while there are a number of things that do, one that has defined the last nine years of my life is this: some who lives here but does not yet love it here. One of my biggest fears is that Alpharetta becomes a city where people live rather than a city that people love; a city of neighborhoods instead of neighbors; of houses, not homes; a place with a big box rather than quaint shops. The problem is that when a city is not loved, properties are not maintained; histories are lost; children grow up, leave and don’t come back. We stop investing in people and in places. Given enough time, hope fades and a community decays. Here in Alpharetta, we are so blessed to have great schools, safe neighborhoods, high paying jobs and beautiful streets. So many cities would crawl over broken glass for what we have the privilege of taking for granted. But these things, as amazing as they are, do not foster a love of place. If you doubt me, think of the cities you love, the cities to which you want to return. What makes them special? What etches them in your memory? It’s not safety, jobs or education. Those are the practical. Rather, love of place comes from the depth of the experience. It can be felt in the food, the architecture, the music, the intriguing walks, the stories

dance and performance theater programs help define our community’s character. Our streetscape sets us apart from surrounding cities, thus creating our own identity. Above all, protecting the health and wellbeing of our citizens is our primary responsibility. Our Johns Creek Fire and Police Department combined boasts one of the best safety records in the nation. Just over the last few years, we have been deemed the 2nd Safest City in Georgia, 6th Safest City in the USA, 10th Best Place to Live in USA, 14th Best Small City for Families…and the list continues. It is our commitment to maintaining a city that is founded on exceptional standards while continually building on our principles and vision of what is yet to be achieved. We invite you to join with me as we create a legacy for our children and grandchildren built on integrity, purpose, determination and the spirit of exceptionalism in all of us. Mike Bodker Johns Creek Mayor

and the history. That is what makes you love a place, a community, a city. What I want so badly for our city is for those who live and work in Alpharetta to love Alpharetta. It’s really the driving force behind my belief that a great community cannot exist without a great and irresistible downtown. You cannot be a connected community without a place to connect and to do life together. Looking now at the big picture, we have before us an historic opportunity in the life of our city. When you consider Avalon with its high-end retail and restaurants; then add the Thompson Street corridor to the west, which promises an old southern neighborhood fronted by a linear park, connecting Avalon to the new City Center with foot and bicycle; then add City Center with its new five-acre park, garden, square, City Hall, and its promise of a more casual dining and shopping experience; and then add the historical downtown with its down-to-earth charm and its present revitalization efforts; we will have over 515 acres of a unique, walk-able and experiential space. It will be the kind of place that draws you in, connects you to your neighbor and creates the picture in your mind of where you belong. It will be the kind of place that might just bring your kids home again. It will be a city for which you might fall in love. David Belle Isle Alpharetta Mayor

110 feet in five seconds. ■ Per Georgia law, no person under the age of 16 years shall operate or be a passenger on a bicycle on a highway, bicycle path, or sidewalk under the jurisdiction or control of this state or any local political subdivision thereof without wearing a bicycle helmet.

The Big Creek Greenway continues to be a resource for the residents of Alpharetta, Roswell and Forsyth County – whether it’s for walking scenic routes, going on a bicycle ride or spending time with pets. In Fulton County, the Greenway’s sidewalks run alongside Big Creek for about 8 miles in Alpharetta from Marconi Drive to south of Mansell Road. The south end extends to Roswell trails that connect to Big Creek Park. The last part of the Alpharetta Greenway, from Webb Bridge Road to Marconi Drive was completed three years ago. The Forsyth County portion runs 6.8 miles from Bethelview Road to McFarland Parkway, with paved portions as well as raised

boardwalk on the trail. There are plans to cross Ga. 400 and merge the two parts of the Greenway as well as connect to and expand existing community trail systems.

Greenway expanding in Forsyth Outdoor enthusiasts will have a new place to walk, run or bike in Forsyth County this spring. The Big Creek Greenway is a linear park with open green spaces for people, as well as natural areas for plants and animals. Most use the space for exercising without having to go to the gym. The Greenway is a 12-foot wide concrete and boardwalk path through the woods along Big Creek. Tim Merritt, deputy county manager for Forsyth County,

Phase 4 construction contract was awarded to CRS Building Corporation in the amount of $2,874,579.87 on Oct. 17, 2013.” Currently, the Greenway has three phases located in Forsyth that span from McFarland Parkway to Bethelview Road for approximately 6.8 miles. “The additional phases are being constructed generally north of the existing trail,” Merritt said. “The intent is to get to Sawnee Mountain.” The Greenway in Forsyth County will be about 16.1 miles when Phases 4 and 5 are completed, Merritt said, with approximately 6.8 miles contained within Phases 1, 2 and 3.

Milton planning trail connection Milton is looking to expand its trail system as part of a regional project with the city of Alpharetta and the North Fulton Community Improvement District. A concept plan is being developed to connect paths in Milton to the Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway and the Greenway in Forsyth County. “The idea was if we could get to some of these existing trail systems, we could expand that on a regional basis,” Milton Public Works director Carter Lucas said. “When we started looking at a regional system, we felt like the opportunity to fund those from a federal standpoint was ultimately going to be more successful because we’d have more people involved.” Proposed 10- to 12-foot multiuse paths run from Cambridge High School at Bethany Bend and Cogburn Road, along Deerfield Parkway and Marconi Drive, on Webb Bridge Road to Big Creek Greenway and on parts of McGinnis Ferry. Eventually, they hope to connect the Milton trails to those east of Ga. 400, via a bridge or a tunnel.

Better CALL PAUL Paul Martin brings experience, style to local homes By KATHLEEN STURGEON

People who have just moved or who are considering relocating to the North Fulton or Forsyth County area may find themselves in need of professional design assistance to make their new space their own. Cumming interior designer Paul Martin may be able to help. Style, creativity and experience are three things Martin provides his clients with when decorating their home or business. With over 20 years running his own business, Martin’s interior design experience wasn’t built overnight. “I always loved furniture growing up,” Martin said. “I went to college and earned a degree in interior design and color. Then I had an internship with Ethan Allen Furniture and stayed with them for 10 years. I later moved to Atlanta and worked for a year, then went out on my own. “It was always my dream to have my own store and be my own boss,”

he said. “When you’re starting out, you think, ‘well I can’t do this, it takes lots of money.’ And you think ‘how can I do it?’ Well, you just have to take the leap of faith and do it.” And that is just what he did. Martin opened his own interior design business at 405 Peachtree Pkwy., Suite 135 in Cumming, in 2006. Today, Paul Martin Interiors represents over 250 different companies that provide products for interior designing. Some of these brands include Taylor King, Wesley Hall and Hickory White. Martin said when homeowners or businesses are decorating a new space, it’s important for them to get with a good design firm that knows how to help pick out fixtures, flooring and everything else. “They need to know how to bring your taste and lifestyle into your house and turn into a home,” Martin said. Staying in touch with trends is something Martin strives for. That means knowing what’s in right now, what’s about to be in and what is on the way out so he can help his customers make the right decision for their home or office. “The current trends in this area are a very straight line, sofas with and without skirts,” Martin said. “It’s all a preference of what your style is. That clean cut line everyone wants is in right now. Light wood furniture, grays, bleach gray to blonde wood are very trendy. It’s in and people want it.” But there could be a price to pay with trendiness, Martin said. “I think three years from now somebody’s going to be sick of it in the family and will say they’re ready to get rid of it,” Martin said. “People need to be careful. Sometimes the husband might say they just bought it, while the wife says they need to get rid of it. “You have to be very careful when

doing a home or buying furniture as far as what you select to go in it, because what’s in today won’t be in next year. It changes,” he said. “You want to use traditional styles that are around forever.” Martin brings renderings of his clients’ space with pictures drawn to scale of exactly how a room will look. He also creates detailed plans of all areas including lighting, wall colors and furniture. “People hire a designer to take their dream and vision and turn that into a reality beyond what they are able to achieve on their own,” Martin said. “Clients want to be able to use every room

in their house, and I want to deliver that for them.” Martin said being a people person is what sets him apart from his competition. “You have to work with someone you’re comfortable with and who knows what is in and out,” Martin said. “I think sometimes when people go online, that can be a big mistake because you get so confused. A lot of people will order something online and won’t like it and send it back. When you’re working with a true designer, they know what’s right for your house.”

“I

was recommended to see Dr. Patel for my cataract surgeries by a friend. I was scared

and he calmed my fears and explained every step of the procedure. I loved Dr. Patel from the first time I met him because of his honesty and confidence that my sight would be greatly improved. His staff was so professional and kind. He had an unbelievable bedside manner that just made you confident and not afraid. The first thing I remember after the surgeries was everything was so bright and clear. I always thought my walls were cream colored but after surgery the walls were white! I thank you Dr. Patel for my new eyes! I have and will continue to recommend you to anyone who needs cataract surgery.” – M.O.

Historic Roswell Experience the authentic story of the American South By Sheila Sillitto Roswell is home to three historic homes, collectively known as A Southern Trilogy, that together tell a Southern story with their rich, dramatic collection of facts, ideas, myths and mysteries. The three houses speak volumes about the history of Roswell, Georgia from 1839 to present. Roswell is a mill village that was co-founded in 1839 by Barrington King and his father, Roswell King. After discovering the water source of Vickery Creek, the Kings invited several of their friends from coastal Georgia to join them in an exciting venture into the Georgia wilderness. Barrington Hall was built for Roswell’s co-founder Barrington King in 1842, and remained in the same family for over 160 years. A wealth of family

furnishings, possessions, and stories await on your tour of Barrington Hall. The seven acres of grounds contain the only pre-Civil War gardens in Metro Atlanta that are open to the public. Also included on the grounds are two wells, a barn, a smokehouse, and an ice house. Bulloch Hall is a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture. It was built in 1839 for Major James Stephens Bulloch and his family. On December 22, 1853, Bulloch’s daughter “Mittie” married Theodore Roosevelt Sr. in the dining room. Their son, Theodore Roosevelt, became the 26th President of the United States. The grounds include a reconstructed slave quarters, garden wells, privy, trail and Museum Shop. Smith Plantation was built in

For 100 years, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has been 100 percent dedicated to kids Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is the only health care system in Georgia that has improved the lives of children by providing the special care they need – for 100 years. The Children’s heritage began in 1915 when an orthopaedic surgeon named Michael Hoke decided to donate services out of two rented cottages with 20 patient beds in Decatur, Ga., establishing the Scottish Rite Convalescent Home for Crippled Children. The system’s humble beginnings also feature the establishment of Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children in 1928, which pioneered programs in pediatric care; and Hughes Spalding Pavilion in 1952, which served African Americans and provided a training facility for African-American doctors at a time when no such hospital existed in Atlanta. Through the generosity and vision of many physicians, staff and community members, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta now has three hospitals and 25 neighborhood locations throughout metro Atlanta, including Marcus Autism Center, serves kids from all

159 counties in Georgia and has more than 850,000 patient visits each year. Today, it is recognized as one of the top pediatric health care institutes in the country. While other health care facilities might offer a pediatric department, pediatrics has been their only focus for 100 years. Their history is one of breakthroughs, milestones and achievements that have positioned the organization as a national leader in pediatric care. Offering access to more than 60 pediatric specialties ranging from sports medicine and radiology to cardiac and transplant services, Children’s has achieved national recognition through groundbreaking clinical firsts, research and advancements. The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center, one of the top pediatric cancer facilities in the country, includes the nation’s largest pediatric sickle cell program. And the Marcus Autism Center is one of three National Institutes of Health Autism Centers of Excellence in the United States. Everything about Children’s is

designed just for kids, but there is more to treating a child than pediatric specialties and superior clinical care. In the early 1900s, Children’s was among the first hospitals to directly involve parents in their child’s care, beginning with a policy of allowing parents to spend the night. Children’s healing environment cares for the entire family by offering family-centered care and support services like chaplains, child life specialists, family libraries, onsite teachers and even therapy dogs. Since 1915, patients and their families have impacted the lives of Children’s physicians, nurses and staff. The team of caregivers at Children’s shares in the joy of every milestone reached by their patients. Children’s is dedicated to making kids better today and healthier tomorrow. Community wellness campaigns, like Strong4Life, highlight their commit-

ment to help Georgia families develop lifelong, healthy habits. As they mark a century of caring for kids, Children’s is just beginning. Their aim is to ensure children have access to the specialized care they need to make them feel better faster – and ensure a healthy future for generations to come. To reach this goal, Children’s is expanding and bringing together community pediatricians to build a system of integrated care, just for kids. Their history is more than dates, buildings and administrative decisions. At its core, the organization is about the kids and families they treat, the donors and volunteers who provide support, and the dedicated staff, doctors and nurses. Since 1915, no one in Georgia has cared for more kids than Children’s. To learn more about the historic moments that make up Children’s history, please visit choa.org/100years.

Roswell’s Southern CULTURE By HATCHER HURD When visiting Roswell, Ga., you have the opportunity to visit three of the most startlingly preserved antebellum homes anywhere in the Southeast. It is a bold claim but true. Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall and the Archibald Smith Plantation have deep roots to Roswell’s historic past, yet all three were still private residences well into the 20th century. Today, they are owned and preserved by the city of Roswell and they are lovingly called Roswell’s Southern Trilogy. Each home is a chapter in the city’s history. Barrington Hall on Roswell’s square, is the ancestral home of the founding family of the city, Roswell King. The city is named for him and his son Barrington gave his name to the palatial mansion that sits on a 10-acre site. Bulloch Hall is the “presidential” sister mansion less than 100 yards away. It is the home Mittie Bulloch Roosevelt. She married Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and is the mother of the 26th president of the United States. Officer Amanda Clay shows off one of the bike trails in Alpharetta.

ROUND AND ROUND WE GO Bicycling around Alpharetta now easier

For those who want a more environmentally friendly way to get to work or the city’s hot spots, the City of Alpharetta is making bicycling around town easier with its new bike loops. The city first implemented the loops in April 2014, but this May the loops will be officially open. There are four loops, each color coordinated and different lengths to let cyclists know how far their path is, said Pete Sewczwicz, director of Public Works for the city. “We have several loops on the east, west side, middle of city and one encompassing the whole entire area combing all the loops into one,” Sewczwicz said. “We have signs out there now letting people know what color it is and how many miles it is. If you see a purple sign with 16 on it, you’re on the 16 mile trail. We range in loops on sizes from just under five miles to nearly 20 plus.” The loops allow cyclists a safe way to ride into the city or go around the town to run errands or meet up with friends. They were an initiative by David Bell Isle, mayor of Alpharetta, Sewczwicz said. “He wanted to have bike loops on both sides of the city as well as one encompassing the middle of the city,” Sewczwicz said. “He wanted one to help you get downtown.” Getting downtown isn’t the only destination for the loops. Officer Amanda Clay is with the Bike Patrol Unit for the City of Alpharetta Police Department. She said the loops also help connect riders with the Greenway, but the Greenway isn’t dedicated solely to cyclists, like the bike loops are. “In Alpharetta we don’t have a ton of solely dedicated bicycle trails,” Clay said. “They’re multipurpose paths. The greenway itself is 12-foot wide and made for users in both directions. Down the center it has striping just like a roadway. It happens to be open to cyclists and they do use it often. We encourage them to use it that way. The

trails in the cities are multipurpose.” Although some of the loops are near a Greenway entrance, they do not specially connect, Clay said. “You have to get on a bike lane and go on the road a few miles where you’ll usually hit a park and find a Greenway,” Clay said. While traveling on the bike paths to whatever destination, cyclists still have to obey the same laws motorists do, Clay said. This is what makes the lanes safe to ride in. “As long as More info they’re following To learn more the laws, evabout the Greeryone is safe,” enway that has Clay said. “It’s more bike trails, just like a vego to page 10 hicle. If someone chooses to run a red light rather than stop, then everyone is unsafe. It’s not a matter of what vehicle you’re in. You’re still unsafe no matter what happens if you break the law. I don’t perceive them as being unsafe, but I wouldn’t recommend taking your young children on it.” The loops are great for older kids learning the rules of the road, Clay said. “Using the bike lanes is a safe way to teach that even bicyclists stop at stop signs and have to yield,” Clay said. “Just like a motor vehicle, there are no exceptions. They follow the exact same rules as the road. If you set up lights on your bike, wear your helmet and bright colors and obey the rules of the road, you’ll be good to go.” Whenever work is being done on the road, the city goes ahead and adds in a bike lane, Clay said. “If we’re already doing the work, we might as well restripe with the bike lane,” Clay said. “If you have a place you like to go and there’s not a bike lane yet, chance are at some point when we restripe it there will be.” As for the future of the lanes, Clay said they are working on getting the Big Creek Greenway connected with Forsyth Greenway and then cyclists will have even more miles to bike.

MINUTES A WEEK — IN SHAPE FOR LIFE SuperSlow Zone is the original slow motion strength training program offering personalized fitness based on each client’s goals. Our time-efficient personal strength training sessions enable a total body workout in about 20 minutes, once or twice a week. SuperSlow Zone training protocol was developed with the help of scientific research as part of a $3.2M osteoporosis study at the University of Florida, School of Medicine. The technique, which targets every muscle fiber, is the most effective, safe way to stimulate muscle growth and increase strength. Each exercise requires a slow, fluid weight lifting movement of 10 seconds up and 10 seconds down. The goal of the slow-motion repetition is to reach total muscle fatigue in 1.5 to 3 minutes per muscle group. Thus only about 20 minutes is required to get a total body workout that effectively stimulates the body’s muscular growth mechanism, helping you to achieve the strength and toned muscle definition you desire. After a SuperSlow Zone workout, your body needs 72 hours to rest, rebuild and increase lean muscle, which in turn helps to boost your metabolism, endurance and stamina. The SuperSlow Zone workout requires focus, so we create an atmosphere where clients can concentrate, receive one-on-one attention, and not feel intimidated. The temperature, set at 68 degrees in the training area, helps keep clients comfortable during the workout, so they don’t have to be inconvenienced with showering and bringing a change of clothes. SuperSlow Zone uses Nautilus One medical-grade, state-of-the-art equipment that is designed specifically to facilitate our slow-motion protocol. All instructors are SuperSlow Zone Certified and accredited by IACET. Our instructors work individually by appointment with each client to develop and customize an exercise program to fit their unique needs and fitness levels. The SuperSlow Zone workout is ideal and beneficial for all ages and abilities—for those who are looking for a sustainable strength training program, those who want to complement a weight loss plan, or get strong in spite of minor medical challenges. We understand that it’s hard to make time to work out, so we help remove the barriers. SuperSlow Zone provides an effective workout in just 20 minutes, so you can get in, get out, and get on with your busy life.

Notable Excerpts from National Media Arthritis Today – “Gaining more strength in less time and with fewer repetitions appeals to everyone, but offers more to people with arthritis: more control of motion through the entire movement, causing less pressure on the joints and preventing pain.” April 2006 Vogue – “As the weeks rolled on, my routine grew easier to manage. I dropped a size, and . . . I can bend and turn freely without reflexively bracing myself first. Best of all, the back pain has disappeared.” April 2006

Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness published study results that the SuperSlow® method resulted in 50 percent greater increase in strength compared with regular, faster and momentum-aided weight training. 40 • Relocation Answer Book™ 2015 • Sponsored Section

Men’s Health – ”The Body You Want In The Time You Have,” SuperSlow® enables you to exercise specific muscle groups slowly, but effectively. It isn’t the speed that tones your muscle; it is what you do to it. SuperSlow® is a lot safer for the injury-prone, since many exercise strains and pains occur within smaller stabilizing muscles that become over-worked when you’re handling heavier loads of weight.” November 2007

Ron Cioffi

JOHNS CREEK

A Johns Creek resident for nearly 20 years, one would think Ron Cioffi is a fairly busy man as Director of communications for the U.S. Tennis Association Southern Section which accounts for 25 percent of the membership. But as they say, if you want to get something done, give it to a busy man. Cioffi is such a man. He has always been drawn to athletics and in the city sat on the Ocee 2006-07 Ocee Baseball Board. He has coached both baseball and lacrosse feeder teams, even taking on the thankless task of webmaster collecting all the teams’ statistics.

42 • Relocation Answer Book™ 2015

But his true passion has been to bring the arts to Johns Creek. He was the founder and first president of Arts on the Creek along with Edouard Charles, Noelle Simon, Tina Sadler and Lisa Keith. It grew out of a Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce Arts & Culture Committee. The committee was tasked to introduce more art and culture into the community as a way to add to the quality of life in the community. “When I was growing up my aunt and uncle were well known artists back in their hometown of Milford, Pennsylvania. And they ran an art show in their home,” Cioffi said. “I just loved the idea of putting on an art show here in Johns Creek.”

But they decided not to do just a show but a festival that included fine art, music, and children’s activities and included business partners. That led to the first 2007 Johns Creek International Music & Arts Festival. That first festival served notice on residents and neighboring cities that Johns Creek was going to be a true city and that meant a true community. That first festival morphed the committee into its own entity, the Art on the Creek Board, and became its own entity separate from the chamber. That is when the festival became the Art on the Creek Festival for two years. The festival itself has since morphed again to be the Johns Creek

5 Arts Festival run by the city. “I’m proud of the fact that it has grown and continued to blossom under the city,” Cioffi said. “But Arts on the Creek is still in operation, we just don’t have that one big event every year. We still support the arts locally.” Art on the Creek is still an independent nonprofit and has worked with the Johns Creek Art Center and held juried art shows as part of JCAC programming. It was a way to partner with JCAC and add another show to that organization’s events. Cioffi continues volunteer and serve his community. In addition to still serving as vice president of Art on the Creek, he is a current member of

the city’s Arts and Culture Board, the Georgia Piedmont Youth Orchestra. — Hatcher Hurd

Remcoe Brommet ROSWELL

When someone in North Fulton has an issue that may be mental healthrelated, where do they go? If Remcoe Brommet has his way, they will come to him for answers. Brommet has started a non-profit for all of North Fulton, The Hub Family Resource Center. The Hub Family Resource Center is an independent non-profit connecting families in North Fulton County to resources that meet their mental and emotional wellness needs in partnership with public and private entities, and working to increase societal awareness of the pressures on today’s families. “We live in high-end suburbs,” he said. “That brings with it a lot of stress and performance pressure” on both children and adults. These pressures can lead to mental issues, such as depression. “It comes out of my work as a citizens advocate, which entailed connecting and referring citizens in crisis to appropriate recourses, usually of a mental health nature,” Brommet said. “I kept hearing on a regular basis people telling me they need help but don’t know what help or where to find it or trust.” Brommet hopes the Hub will be the first step. People referred to the Hub will be interviewed to determine what help they need and put in connection with the appropriate resource. “We are partnering with police departments in the communities, courts, probation officers, hospital and Fulton County Schools,” he said. The Hub is seeking fundraising and employees and Brommet hopes to open the doors in the late summer. For more information visit thehubfrc.org. — Jonathan Copsey

Diane Cooley ALPHARETTA

Hair is one of those things many of us take for granted. However for some, it is a luxury. That’s where Diane Cooley

comes in. Cooley’s daughter, Jenna, now 15, has a rare disease called Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. It can be minor – eye lashes or spots on the head – or severe, causing complete baldness. Understandably, in women and girls, this can be devastating to self-image. Jenna has at one time or another lost all her hair or just spots. She has lost one eyebrow or one eye’s lashes. The loss is seemingly random. “When she was younger, it affected her affected worse than now,” Cooley said. “As she got older, she was better about the hair loss. She understands it. I can imagine if she lost all of her hair at once, it would affect her more.” Cooley, her friends and family began It’s Just Hair, now in its ninth year, to collect ponytails from the community to be made into wigs by Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides high-quality hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children with long-term medical hair loss, often alopecia, but also cancer. It’s Just Hair’s strength is in its simplicity – give some hair, help the needy. Through Cooley’s work, hundreds of people in need of hair have benefitted. “I hope they get out of it how you don’t have to open your wallet to help others. You can give your time or your hair,” Cooley said. “It feels good helping people by doing such a simple act.” — Jonathan Copsey

Sheriff Duane K. Piper FORSYTH COUNTY

After being in law enforcement for over 26 years, including 15 with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Duane K. Piper was elected sheriff of Forsyth County in 2012. He began his term Jan. 1, 2013. Piper moved to Forsyth County in 1993 for the same reasons so many people have flocked to this little county north of Atlanta. “There are two top reasons why I came here and stayed here and what I want to keep going in this county,” Piper said. “The reasons are the extremely low crime rate and the outstanding school system. There’s a great quality of life in general.”

There has been a significant drop in crime in his first two years as sheriff, Piper said, compared to the 2012 crime numbers. He attributes that to his officers. “The most positive aspect is my deputies, the ones who work here and serve the citizens of this county,” Piper said. “They’re committed to keeping the county safe and working with the community, rather than working against the community.” That type of policing is a community-based policing model, Piper said. “Our deputies are involved with the

FORSYTH COUNTY Sheriff Duane K. Piper community and the folks they serve and protect, rather than being apart from them,” Piper said. “We try to be as involved in our citizens’ lives as they want us to be without being intrusive. We’ll help them with anything they need.” As far as giving new Forsyth County residents advice, Piper said he would rather give them a pat on the back. “I wouldn’t give them a tip,” Piper said. “I would congratulate them by making an outstanding decision on where to live. All around, this is the best county in the state of Georgia to live in.” — Kathleen Sturgeon

Wayne Boston MILTON

Wayne Boston has worked with Better Together, Milton’s volunteer committee, for four years – since the group was first created. For two of those years, he has been the face of

the organization and the city’s part-time community builder. “I didn’t have a chance in my working career to do community type events, so I had it in mind to do that when I retired,” Boston said. “I wanted to give back to the community.” Better Together gets citizens involved in community programs like Adopt-a-Stream and Earth Day, and partners with North Fulton Community Charities to give everyone a better quality of life. They also offer newcomer’s guides to new residents as well as educational workshops. One event, an Alzheimer’s symposium, raised awareness about the disease and directed residents to local resources. “Dr. Angelo Sambunaris talked about the latest Alzheimer’s research and invited people to a free memory screening at his office,” Boston said. Better Together hopes to offer similar programs for addiction therapy and a workshop for veterans. The organization also hosts business connection events for new entrepreneurs. “The first event was at Nothing Bundt Cakes, and we had about 130 people,” he said. “The lady who owns the business said it certainly helped her business not only that day, but continuing afterward.” Business connection events help not only the owner, but the neighborhood as a whole, he said. “That helps them become more aware of their neighbors and friends,” he said. The next project is Milton Literary Group, which Boston said helps authors with the “nuts and bolts” of writing. “There was a lot of interest in forming a literary group. We’ve had local authors come and speak on editing and research,” he said. “We’re hoping all this will lead to having perhaps the first literary festival.” Boston said with Better Together, it’s about the people. “I like meeting new people,” he said. “It gives me an opportunity to meet new people and do something totally different from what I did in the work environment.” — Shannon Weaver

Barrington Hall 535 Barrington Drive, Roswell 770-640-3855 Barrington Hall is the surviving ancestral home of the Roswell King family. Built by King’s son, Barrington King, in 1842, it is a quintessential Greek revival antebellum home. Roswell and Barrington King founded the city in the 1830s that bears the elder King’s name. Originally a Connecticut Yankee, Roswell King recognized the water power in Vickery Creek and founded the mills that spurred the city’s economy until the last one closed in the 1970s. The main gate faces directly up Mimosa Boulevard where so many of the proud homes of the founding families and their churches are located. It remained in the family’s hands until

2003 and contains many of the original King furniture and possessions. Bulloch Hall - 1839 180 Bulloch Ave. Roswell, GA 30075 678-639-7500 Bulloch Hall, built by Stephen Bulloch, is the Roswell antebellum home touched most by history. Bulloch’s daughter, Mittie, married Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and is the mother of President Teddy Roosevelt. Her brother James Dunwoody Bulloch was a U.S. naval officer, but during the Civil War was the Confederacy’s secret agent in Europe. Federal authorities called him “the most dangerous man in Europe” because headed the South’s blockaderunning activities. He is said by some to be the model on which Margaret Mitchell based her character Rhett Butler in “Gone with the Wind.” Archibald Smith Plantation – 1845 935 Alpharetta St, Roswell 770-641-3978 The Archibald Smith Plantation Home is on 5 acres in Roswell’s City Hall complex. Built in 1845, it served as the household for a 400-acre farm. The home was built by one of Roswell’s

Archibald Smith Plantation founders, Archibald Smith, and housed three generations of his family. Today, it is one of the most complete examples of an antebellum home because all of the furnishings and artifacts are from the family’s belongings, down to the black-and-white television belonging to the last generation (it was occupied into the 1990s). Today docents lead tours of the home, the grounds including a guest house, slave quarters, cookhouse, carriage house, barn, spring house and well. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Wills Park Recreation Center 11925 Wills Road Wills Park in Alpharetta is the oldest and one of the most used parks in North Fulton. The 100-acre park was the legacy of Quilliam “Quilly” Wills, a former mayor of Alpharetta. He bequeathed it to Fulton County to be a park. Later purchased by Alpharetta in 1995 for $2 million, the city promptly poured $8 million in new improvements to make it one of the city’s jewels. It is certainly one of the most versatile parks anywhere, with baseball fields, tennis courts, indoor gym, outdoor basketball courts, a disc golf course and the Alpharetta Equestrian Center. It has a 1-acre community-built children’s playground called Wacky World complete with castle, fort, train engine and rocket ship, plus swings, and climbing obstacles. It has a dog park called Waggy World so it is pet friendly. The huge public pool offers low, medium and high diving boards. Walking trails wend their way around the park so you see the horses, watch a little baseball and play some tennis all in one spot.

48 • Relocation Answer Book™ 2015 • Sponsored Section

Things to Consider prior to your Interior Design Consultation: COLOR: What are your preferences? Go through magazines or Houzz and see what inspires you. Are the rooms varying shades of one color or are you drawn to contrasting or complimentary colors within one space. STYLE: Are you willing to let the Designer guide you entirely or do you have strong opinions about how your home should be decorated? Do you prefer big, overstuffed chairs, or more formal, smaller pieces? Are you comfortable with lots of embellishments or do you prefer a sleek, clean look? Do you prefer traditional wood finishes or distressed or painted pieces? TEXTURE AND PATTERN: Do you enjoy lush, heavy velvets, crisp linens or elegant silks? Are there certain patterns you do or do not like? Do you prefer muted tones with texture or bold and colorful patterns? MATERIALS: Do you prefer traditional architectural materials such as stained wood, porcelain tile, stone and brick or more unexpected materials like cork, marmoleum, painted con-

crete and quartz? HOW DO YOU LIVE? Determine how you use each room and utilize the areas within each space. Children and pets are important considerations. In a Family Room, do kids gather with friends or is that restricted to a play area? In a bedroom, do you read or watch TV in bed or do you require a separate seating area for these functions? If you frequently entertain, how many guests are typical? Are they formal or informal gatherings? Lastly, do you have “wasted spaces” that require a transformation such as turning a library into a music room or a sunroom into a playroom, a spare bedroom into a home gym? PRIORITIZE & DETERMINE A REALISTIC BUDGET: Your designer understands that you may not know the exact cost of properly and professionally designing your space, however it is important for you to consider beforehand an amount you are willing to invest to best achieve your shared goal.

Fresh from the farm Discover your local farmers market

By MARLA PRINCE In an effort to improve their diets, many Americans are rediscovering local farmers markets, which give consumers access to locally grown, farm-fresh produce that is often organically grown. Locally grown offers many benefits to the consumer including fresher food, seasonal food, food that is transported fewer miles, food that has less refrigeration and food that has spent less time in storage. Locally grown also means food that isn’t loaded with toxic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, fungicides or synthetic hormones. But farmers markets don’t just help Americans eat healthier, they also help communities lower their carbon footprint since the food is not transported as far as when it is shipped to grocery stores. Locally grown food also helps the economy by helping farmers stay in business. Farmers markets can also reflect local culture by selling items other than fruits and vegetables. At some markets, you might find locally raised honey, grassfed meat, apple cider, free-range eggs, home-baked goods and even arts and crafts. A visit to your farmers market is also a fun family outing where you can chat with farmers, gardeners, bakers, bee-keepers and soap-makers. Northside residents have their pick of weekend farmers markets including the following:

Losing to Win:

Center for Weight Management at Gwinnett Medical Center Changing Lives Weight-related health problems are epidemic in the U.S. More than a third of our population is considered overweight, and the South is leading the nation with the highest rates. Losing weight and living healthily is not always easy—sometimes you need a jumpstart. The Center for Weight Management (CWM) at Gwinnett Medical Center now offers a comprehensive, non-surgical approach to weight loss through the new Medical Weight Loss program. “The Medical Weight Loss program at GMC uses a multi-disciplinary approach to obesity and recognizes it as a disease,” says Eileen Javellana, MD, medical director for the program. “For most of our patients, it is not a simple equation of too many calories in and not enough calories out. “This program is a starting point for those who have tried to combat their weight alone or have experienced weight loss in the past only to regain. It sets itself apart by providing specialists in obesity—physicians, nurses, dietitians, exercise therapists, psychologists—who are all very passionate about helping people feel better.” The program is made up of three phases to encourage participants to make changes toward

better health. Using the support of the CWM team, participants are guided to turn those changes into a lifestyle. Reducing “So many of our patients have been on every diet out there with little to no success,” says Jackie Berkovich, dietitian for the program. “In this phase, we take the focus off of choosing foods by providing meal replacements, while working on fitness and eating behaviors. Our team works to help participants develop strategies to live a healthier lifestyle. We want to inspire them to make healthier choices and plant the seeds for change.” The details: These patients spend 12 weeks or more with a structured and medically supervised meal replacement program, as well as weekly group classes designed to begin replacing old habits with new ones. Adapting “Medical weight management can be an ideal option for those who are not interested in bariatric surgery but need support,” says Rebecca Gomez, Psy.D., clinical psychologist and behavioral health coordinator at CWM. “With this program, you are supported by medical staff, other program profes-

sionals and a community of peers who are in the program with you.” The details: This is a four-week reintroduction phase. A structured meal plan is provided to help gradually reintroduce food so the body can adjust, both to eating solid foods and to new habits. Maintaining “This program is about attaining a healthier weight that can help either improve or prevent further disease, not just about getting to an ideal body weight,” adds Dr. Javellana. “We all battle weight on a daily basis. This program empowers individuals and provides the tools necessary to keep excess weight off and stay healthy.” The details: At this point, no meal replacements are used and stability is the key in their new lifestyle. Participants have the option of attending classes and meeting with providers. Change is hard. It’s cliché, but with the right tools and support, you can transform a change into a lifestyle. KATIE VANBRACKLE/STAFF

Ciao, Blueberry!

Adrianna Coppola

Italian lady in Johns Creek wins 2015 Flavor of Georgia Award

By KATIE VANBRACKLE What happens when a sweet, fresh-off-the-farm Georgia blueberry crosses paths with sophisticated, tangy Italian vinegar? Instant chemistry – and an award-winning flavor. Italian-born Adriana Coppola, who now lives in Johns Creek, was recently named winner of the 2015 Flavor of Georgia contest for her A&A Alta Cucina Italia Balsamico al Mirtillo, a blueberry balsamic vinegar reduction. The sweet and tangy concoction not only won in its category (salsas, chutneys and condiments), but went on to sweep the entire competition, being named overall winner out of more than 100 entries. The Flavor of Georgia competition, hosted annually by the University of Georgia Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, is designed to spotlight market-ready food made in Georgia and featuring Georgia ingredients, innovative qualities, commercial appeal and originality. Coppola was surprised to walk away with top honors, aware that her small business was competing against much larger Georgia food companies. But she agrees that her creation is something special. “Our blueberry balsamic is the perfect blend of white balsamic and blueberries,” Cop-

pola said. “I use white in order to not overwhelm the delicate and sweet flavor originating from the blueberries, and also the beautiful rich dark blue purple hue. The balsamic vinegar adds a nice tartness to the berries while making the flavor a little more complex. It’s an exquisite and unique flavor.” Coppola says the product is a “luscious accompaniment” to any dish, and can be used as a salad dressing, paired with cheese, served with duck, pork or lamb or drizzled over ice cream, frozen yogurt or cheesecake. Coppola created the blueberry balsamic to honor “both of her hometowns, in Italy and Georgia.” Her family is originally from the Campania region of southern Italy, specifically Sorrento and Capri, where young Adriana learned to cook by watching her mother and zia (aunt) Sonia at work in the kitchen. “Since I can remember, I always helped in the kitchen – rolling the handle of my Mom’s old-fashioned Imperia pasta maker, which she gave to me when I got married,” she said. “My favorite dishes that Mom made were cannelloni ripieni di ricotta al sugo fresco, gnocchi al

burro e salvia, ravioli alla caprese, eggplant parmigiana, carciofi ripieni (stuffed artichokes), pastiera (a dessert made only in the Napoli area) and chicken alla cacciatora with polenta that my aunt Sonia made always for me. “What I miss the most about Italian cuisine is the freshness of the ingredients (we usually cooked from what was available that day at the farmers market), and also the lightness and simplicity, but at the same time flavorful dishes. Especially in the south of Italy, we cook with a lot of vegetables and do not use many creamy or heavy sauces. I also miss the grana padano, espresso taken in ceramic little cups at the coffee shop, and the cornetto (croissant), for me always stuffed with Nutella.” When Coppola was 14, she lived with an American family in the U.S. as an exchange student, an experience her parents wished her to have in order to learn a new culture and language. America was, she says, “always present on my mind.” In later years, after a divorce, Coppola moved with her two children to Johns Creek where she had previously vacationed for several years. It was an area that was not only familiar, but which she liked very much. At first, she contented herself with keeping the flavors of Italy alive for her children, cooking favorite dishes at home such as Montanara (a fried pizza typical of Napoli). Now she shares her talents with a wider audience through her Italian gourmet foods company, named A&A Alta Cucina Italia by blending the first initial of her own name

with that of her sister, Angelina, who died nine years ago. “When I knew I wanted to launch my food product line here in the U.S., I struggled so much with its presentation, how to pack it, how to wrap it, to label it, the colors, everything,” she said. “It was a nightmare since I had the products ready and people were demanding them. “So I talked a lot in my thoughts with my sister,” she said. “She was an architect with a great gift for decorating and designing, so I started to think, if I was able to talk to Angelina… what would have been her suggestions? So I started using her colors (terra colors) and tried to visualize everything as she would have done it. I decided to call my company A&A, not only so Angelina will be there always to inspire me, but also to honor her, and it’s a way to be together on earth.” A&A Alta Cucina Italia products can be found in several local stores – visit altacucinaitalia.com for a list. Or head to the Alpharetta Farmers Market on Saturday mornings to meet Coppola and sample her artisan Italian products such as infused extra-virgin olive oils, tomato sauces, pestos, balsamic jams and seasoning salts. Don’t forget to ask for a sample of her delicious blueberry balsamic, that award-winning flavor that is a bit like Adriana Coppola herself – firmly rooted in Italian tradition while embracing the best Georgia has to offer.
