Thieves invade home, assault elderly woman

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry were stolen June 25 during a home invasion where two suspects physically assaulted and tied up a grandmother.

Police received a distress call at 10:40 p.m. that two masked men with handguns had entered a house on Barnesley Lane.

One of the victims, a 25-year-old woman, told police that she had been in her room at 8:40 p.m. that night when a large, armed man burst in. She was directed downstairs, where she saw her two grandmothers already bound and lying on the floor.

Fake transaction stopped, 2 suspects arrested ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta police responded June 21 to the AT&T at North Point Mall after an employee called, saying that two men were attempting to use fake identification and transaction cards.

The two men had wanted to open up a phone account and buy new phones, but when they offered a driver’s license and credit card, the employee said that he could see they were fake.

One officer told the two suspects to sit down, but one did not. When the officer attempted to grab the standing suspect’s arm, the suspect tried to pull away, starting a struggle. Eventually, the officer’s K-9 bit the man on his lower leg.

During this incident, the second suspect attempted to flee, but was eventually captured.

All three victims were zip-tied before the suspects began ransacking the home, police said.

During the altercation, the suspects hit one of the grandmothers, who is 74 years old, in the face. She was treated on the scene for her injuries.

The men took a family safe, $86,000 in cash, and several pieces of jewelry, including a golden cross pendant, gold rings and a gold bracelet. They also took the keys to one of the victim’s 2017 silver Honda Accord and left with the car.

It was later found abandoned on Braceridge Road.

Once one of the women was able to free herself, she immediately called 911.

Both suspects are described as black men wearing dark clothing with face

masks that covered all but their mouth and chin.

One was described as skinny and the other as heavy-set. Both were wearing gloves, but the glove worn by the larger man on his right hand had the first and middle fingers exposed.

The victims’ family told police that one of the neighborhood’s security guards had been parking “very close” to and facing their residence over the past several months. They also mentioned seeing a white van parked nearby as well all day.

Police said they have “several strong leads” they are investigating. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call the Alpharetta Crime Stoppers Tip Hotline at 678-297-6307.

Quinton Oliphant, 30, of Stockbridge was arrested for possession of false identification document, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and financial transaction fraud. Dameon Meyers, 32, of Stockbridge was arrested for obstruction of a law enforcement officer and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.

Both were transported to North Fulton Hospital for injuries.

He had parked at 9 p.m. on the first level, only to return 30 minutes later to find that the passenger side window was broken open. A black book bag with some personal items and work materials was missing.

Car windows shattered at parking deck ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta police were called June 21 to the parking deck

by Alpharetta City Hall after two people separately reported that someone had broken into their cars.

The first caller told police that she had parked at the lowest level at 8 p.m., and when she returned an hour later, she saw that the driver side rear window was broken. Her laptop, valued at $500, was stolen.

While officers were investigating, a man walked up and said that a similar incident had just happened to him.

Employees detect counterfeit $100 bill ROSWELL, Ga. — Two employees from Wender and Roberts Drugs on Atlanta Street spotted a counterfeit $100 bill when it was passed during a transaction June 20.

The employees said that a man had come into the store at 2 p.m. and attempted to purchase a Coke using the fake bill.

The employee at the cash register, however, found that the bill was not legitimate after using a detection pen.

A second employee was called up and confirmed that it was fake.

The man who attempted to pass the bill said that he had just gotten it from the bank and left the store without arguing.

Deadline approaches to appeal 2018 property assessments County, state still battling over 2017 assessments

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The deadline to appeal 2018 property assessments is July 6, but homeowners may want to keep an eye on last year’s tax bill, too.

That’s because Fulton County and the Georgia Department of Revenue remain at odds over whether it was legal for the County Commission to throw out the new assessments on residential property last year and roll back values to 2016 levels.

The Department of Revenue argues that the Fulton County Commission overstepped its authority by throwing out the new appraisals. If the agency is right, that means local residents could receive an additional bill for 2017 property taxes.

On average, the updated appraisals amounted to a 13 percent increase in property values countywide. Some residential properties – particularly those in North Fulton – saw much greater increases. But, on average, county homeowners would see an additional tax bill of around 13 percent of what they paid last year.

A court hearing on the matter scheduled for late May was cancelled after Fulton County Attorney Patrise PerkinsHooker withdrew her petition to compel the Department of Revenue to accept the revised assessments it rejected last year.

So far, Fulton County has received just over 7,000 appeals on 2018 assessments, but that may increase as the deadline approaches this week.

Perkins-Hooker said her office can refile the petition at any time.

“There are several records and documents that need to be provided to DOR,” she said. “It is essential that all of the peripheral documents be provided and acknowledged before they advance the litigation on the main issue of the county’s use of its power to correct the tax digest. Once the all of the detailed backup documentation is provided, they will assess their options.”

County Commissioner Liz Hausmann said Fulton County has engaged former Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens to negotiate on its behalf with the Department of Revenue.

“I’m very hopeful we’ll be able to come to a resolution,” Hausmann said.

Meanwhile, property owners this year are facing the same sticker shock on appraisals.

The Assessor’s Office has estimated property values countywide have gone up more than 25 percent. If school and city tax rates remain the same as last year, it would mean higher tax bills.

Roswell and Alpharetta are set to adopt their tax rates this month. Johns Creek and Milton will set their millage rates later in the summer.

Fulton County Schools has adopted its 2019 budget and is in the process of

setting its millage rate.

So far, Fulton County has received just over 7,000 appeals on 2018 assessments, but that may increase as the deadline approaches this week.

Homeowners can take some solace, however, in the prospect that this year’s double-digit increase will likely be a onetime occurrence.

Legislation passed in March will allow North Fulton residents to vote on a law that will cap future increases on homesteaded property values at 3 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower.

The legislation also rolls back the values on homes to the lowest level over the past three years – probably 2016 – when the cap kicks in next year.

Roswell passes year-end budget amendments

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell City Council voted unanimously June 25, with council member Mike Palermo abstaining, to pass budget amendments to the 2018 budget amounting to $679,000.

This annual process makes adjustments to both the operating and capital budgets and are funded through a combination of increased recurring revenues, expenditure savings, and the use of fund balance.

Although there were over a dozen amendments introduced, the one change that drew the most attention from the council was a suggestion to transfer $160,000 from the general fund to the hotel motel fund to cover a remaining payment to the Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Some council members said that they wanted clarification as to why the bureau could not be paid directly from the

general fund instead of first transferring the money to the hotel motel fund.

“This is an accounting question,” said Harpreet Hora, the city’s budget manager. “The payment has to be made through the hotel motel fund.”

She added that payments to the bureau are made monthly instead of as one lump sum, and because projected revenues have fallen short, the city must transfer funds to make the payment.

Palermo said that he supports the “cash flow aspect” but that he doesn’t support transferring the money instead of directly using the general fund.

“Government accounting is already complex enough as it is,” he said. “We don’t need to be making it more complicated by taking extra steps.”

Palermo suggested deferring the topic, but that suggestion failed because the city’s fiscal year would end before the next meeting.

“There’s a good reason to transfer to the hotel motel fund.” said Councilman Matthew Tyser. “In future years, we can

go back and see that it came out of the general fund, we had a short fall, and we had to fund it from the general fund.

What the accountants are trying to do is increase the trackability for future years.”

Palermo ultimately abstained from the vote saying that he would have liked to have had further discussion on the process but understood the issue of timing.

Other highlights of the budget amendment include a $225,000 increase in the expenditure budget for legal fees, a $17,000 increase in the confiscated assets fund to purchase a new K-9, and an $823,000 increase for insurance claim reimbursements. The amendments likewise include a $350,000 reduction in T-SPLOST funds based on updated projections.

In other action, the council approved the 2018 Community Development Block Grant. The city was awarded a total of $466,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that

Alpharetta to host MARTA, state transportation workshop

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta city leaders will meet with transportation officials from the state and MARTA this month to discuss a proposal to provide rapid transit bus service along Ga. 400.

The meeting, scheduled for July 16 before the City Council, comes in the wake of the recent announcement by Gov. Nathan Deal that the state will commit $100 million to build four new bus-only interchanges along a 16-mile stretch of Ga. 400.

It is the largest infusion of state money into a single transit project and it is part of a $1.6 billion plan to establish managed lanes along the highly traveled highway.

Local officials say it could be a gamechanger for commuters, providing fast, express travel to the tens of thousands of commuters who pass through North Fulton each day.

“It’s good they’re putting dollars toward this, the managed lanes and expansion of MARTA,’’ said Alpharetta City Councilman Jason Binder, one of the most outspoken watchdogs on transit issues on the council. “I believe myself and others on the council will be look-

ing to make sure that the selected [bus interchange] sites work for Alpharetta.”

Rapid transit bus service along Ga. 400 was one of a number of initiatives proposed in Fulton County’s 2018 countywide transit plan. Cities outside Atlanta agreed in principle on a $4.9 billion plan that concentrated on rapid transit bus service along Ga. 400 and Holcomb Bridge Road in North Fulton and along Ga. 29 and South Fulton Parkway in South Fulton. It also included arterial bus rapid transit along some arterial corridors, such as Old Milton Parkway.

Binder said the state funding for the Ga. 400 bus interchanges is huge, but he is more interested in the “ripple effect” of adding rapid transit to the area.

“As we expand the transit line along Ga. 400 the main thing we have to get answered is how are we going to help improve our roadways, the last mile of connectivity, the shuttle buses, the bus services that will connect people from those new stops … to places they want to go, our retail centers, Avalon or North Point, our business centers, our top employers,” Binder said.

District 1 County Commissioner Liz Hausmann, who represents much of North Fulton, agreed there are other issues that need addressed beyond the

“I think this is a big first step,” she said.

“I don’t think it’s the final product. I feel strongly that in order for this to be utilized, it needs to go where people need to go.”

The commissioner said she thinks rapid transit service needs to extend be-

yond North Springs in Sandy Springs. It must also connect with Perimeter Center and eventually tie into I-285 to connect with Cobb and Gwinnett Counties.

Legislation passed this year allows 13 metro counties to hold referendums on whether to add a penny sales tax that would help fund transit. Fulton and DeKalb counties have been paying a penny sales tax to fund MARTA for the past 47 years. Clayton County joined the system in 2015.

Hausmann said she wants to see how far the current penny can stretch transit before proposing another sales tax in Fulton County.

Already, she said, MARTA has committed to the operation and maintenance of the rapid transit service up Ga. 400.

That’s an annual cost of about $8 million, she added.

Other funding sources from the state and federal government may also be tapped, Hausmann said.

Based on the state’s $100 million commitment to the Ga. 400 transit project, there is some reason for optimism, she said.

“It’s significant in that the state has not previously invested in transit until this,” she said. “It’s really historic they’re investing this much.”

Roswell Rotary bids farewell to past president Lisa Carlisle

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell Rotary Club leadership is changing hands, and the future looks bright.

The club met June 28 to say goodbye to outgoing President Lisa Carlisle, honor Rotarians who have made significant contributions and introduce incoming President Becky Stone.

Under Carlisle’s leadership, Roswell Rotary was one of the few clubs to fulfill the requirements for all 25 citations released by Rotary International for strengthening clubs, increasing humanitarian service and enhancing awareness.

The club will be honored for this milestone in lieu of being recognized once again as the Rotary Club of the Year, because that award was discontinued.

“I think in some ways this is an even bigger honor,” Carlisle said. “Because it was no one’s opinion on what we did.

We literally met the Rotary International standards for our projects and the way we conduct our business as a club.”

Over the past year, the club has strengthened ties with other local Rotary Clubs and has held multiple fundraising, community service and memorial events. The club has worked this year with the Drake House and End Human Trafficking Now and has helped host the annual Honor Air Flight and Memorial Day services.

New this year, the Rotary has formed the Rotary Opioid Awareness Task Force to raise awareness and provide resources for opioid addiction.

But not everything was smooth sailing for Carlisle. Just two months after her installment, the city was buffeted by multiple storms, including the remnants of hurricanes and several ice storms.

Those incidents may have altered the club’s plans, but they also showed the heart, brains and courage of the club’s members by supporting the community at large during those trying times, Carlisle said.

“Everything works out in the end,” Carlisle said. “We’ve had to make many adjustments. But some of those adjustments were what we needed all along.”

“Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve the best Rotary Club in the world.”

Several Rotary members were honored during Carlisle’s farewell speech, including the outgoing board. This year’s Rotarian of the Year, Lynne Lindsay, was also named.

“You cannot ignore this member – she is just that good,” Carlisle said. “She

has stepped in so many ways that there are just too many to list.”

Carlisle said she is proud of how the club has grown over the past year and she is looking forward to seeing how it with change in the coming months.

Incoming president Becky Stone said it is an “incredible honor” to take up her new role and that she already has several plans in the works.

Some of the upcoming projects include a new mentoring program, partnering with North Fulton Community Charities to open a warming shelter and working with Roswell High School on a new program to help students learn about post-graduation options outside of college.

The last project in particular is her passion, Stone said.

The new president said she also plans to emphasize additional resources to members, especially after guest speakers meet with the members. Some of the upcoming guest speakers include a Rabbi, who will speak about the Holocaust, a Frenchman, who will speak about WWII battlefields, a former NFL player, who will speak about discrimination, and local politicians, who will speak about transportation issues.

“I want to engage the entire community, including areas where we are not currently aware of or we haven’t served,” Stone said. “We have people of all kinds of backgrounds, with a lot of different thoughts and ways to accomplish our goals that we can share with our community. I hope to encourage our club to reach out beyond ourselves and touch the lives of everybody.”

Small business owner gains reprieve for zoning mistake

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It doesn’t come up often, but a small auto repair shop on Maxwell Road has been granted a variance to allow for a small building that extends within two feet of the property line.

The unusual circumstances surrounding the June 18 City Council action is that the building, a small garage, is already built.

Few cities guard their appearance as much as Alpharetta, and businesses are required to follow strict codes for building structures, including materials and signage.

The business owner, David Kahn, appeared before the City Council requesting the variance after he was notified he had improperly constructed the building without a permit and that its placement violated the 15-foot setback required of structures in the area, which is zoned for light industrial.

Members of the City Council said they were uncomfortable being placed in a position of granting “forgiveness” and would rather follow regular protocols for allowing permission before buildings are constructed.

unprecedented in Alpharetta. The last time was back in 2015 when a home at 255 Clipper Bay Drive was constructed within the side building setback due to a surveying error, according to city staff.

“I made an honest mistake,” Kahn told the City Council.

Kahn added that he constructed the building a little over a year ago after having moved his small repair shop from Roswell to Alpharetta. He said he has been operating out of a two-car garage on Maxwell Road and needed the small shed, about 400 square feet, to store some of his equipment.

As part of the council action, Kahn had to provide the city with statements from neighboring property owners that they had no objections.

Kahn must also obtain all proper permits and install landscaping to obscure the cinderblock structure.

“I do think people make mistakes, and if they move here they don’t always realize our city is really steeped in codes, so we can keep the beauty of our area up,” Councilman Donald Mitchell said.

“We don’t allow cinderblock buildings.

We don’t allow butler buildings per se any longer in our code. Let’s just use

this as a lesson to every homeowner and business owner: before you build, call our Community Development Office, ask them what our restrictions are and what they need to do to comply with our codes.”

The City Council was careful to state the variance should in no way be construed as a precedent that will allow others to build first, then seek relief.

“This wouldn’t be a close call if any adjoining neighbor had objected,” Councilman John Hipes said. “As a shot across the bow to anyone who thinks this is a precedent, it is not because they would be operating at their own risk of building something, and if anybody objected as an adjoining neighbor, for me it wouldn’t be a close call.”

Following the vote, Kahn said he was nervous going before the City Council, but is relieved to have the issue resolved.

“I’m small time,” he said. “I don’t have the cash flow some of these other businesses have.”

In the end, though, he said he was impressed with how he was treated.

“I’ve got to say, I made some mistakes, but the City of Alpharetta has been nothing but professional with me, and they’re really working to stick with the small businesses.”

Matilda’s property owner: Any issues from music venue will be addressed

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The property owner of Matilda’s Under the Pines is assuring nearby residents that he will address any issues that may arise from the popular music venue when it opens this summer.

The Milton City Council approved variances last month, allowing the business to set up shop at Hickory Flat Road and Birmingham Road after more than 15 years in Alpharetta.

Matilda’s incorporates a “hen house” building that serves as a stage for amplified acoustic performances on the weekend where patrons can set up tables, chairs and bring their own food and drink.

Nearby residents voiced concerns over bringing the concert venue to the generally quiet and rural area at a June 18 City Council meeting. Many who live close to the site said the business would bring unwanted noise, traffic, safety concerns and other potential quality of life issues.

Curtis Mills, the applicant and owner of the venue’s new location, is pledging any issues that arise from the Matilda’s relocation will be addressed.

council, and by proxy, the city, was our interest was to do nothing but bring Matilda’s to Milton and not create some transferrable, gargantuan music enterprise.”

Mills added he and the venue owners showed compromise and their willingness to cooperate with the council’s requests. One concession included that the special use permit would only be applicable to Matilda’s as it currently operates.

The council set parameters on the operation, including a limit on the number of events during a year, the months concerts can be held and the amount of attendees permitted at each show. Mills said these limits do not allow for a seamless transition to the

city, considering Alpharetta had no caps, but he is still pleased with the results.

The City Council also said it would review the permit later this year to evaluate whether it is operating without detriment to the area. The council also granted a variance to delete a required review every three years.

“I proposed that we accelerate the review and if it’s not working we’ll fix it or close it,” Mills said. “I felt that was good for the community to remove the risk that something could be disruptive.”

Once concerts begin, Mills hopes residents will find their concerns are quelled.

“My hope and expectation is that once we start up, everyone will realize it is a non-issue,” he said.

However, if complaints do arise, he vowed to make the proper changes.

“I’m sympathetic to those concerns,” he said. “I will keep an open line of communication with anyone who has a concern, question or problem. We want this to fit and work in the community. We’re excited about the outcome and looking forward to remaining open and sensitive to those opposed and will address any issues.”

Phone scammers target grandparents

By CARSON COOK carson@northfulton.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Police say a series of phone scams has recently targeted senior residents of North Fulton by claiming to be grandchildren in need of help.

There have been at least five incidents of this type of scam reported across North Atlanta from February through June. The dollar loss to residents has ranged from around $4,000 to $90,000.

In these incidents, the scammer called the target claiming to be a granddaughter or grandson that has been in an accident and needs money to get out of jail. In some cases, the caller pretended to be an attorney helping the grandchild.

This is a relatively new scam to the North Fulton area, according to Milton Police Capt. Charles Barstow.

“Agencies are receiving more and more reports of this specific criminal activity. We would anticipate the number of victims to increase if the scam were to become more widely utilized by criminals,” Barstow said.

This scam is unique in that it specifically targets grandparents.

“Past scams haven’t been limited to a specific group of persons, and victims can come from all walks of life and backgrounds,” Barstow said.

Other phone scams seen recently in North Fulton involve scammers pretending to be police officers calling to collect a fine for missed jury duty or a failed court appearance. In Fulton County, jurors who do not report for duty or call ahead to excuse their absence can be subject to fines. However, the court would not collect these fines over the phone.

Regardless of the type of scam, potential targets can take steps to protect themselves.

“The most important thing anyone can do to protect themselves is to verify the information being offered to them,” Barstow said. “Although this may be difficult at times, simply trying to make contact with the family member or loved one may frequently help them to determine that person is not in jeopardy. If unable to make contact or making contact proves to be too difficult, they can contact local law enforcement to assist them.”

tempted to con an Alpharetta woman out of $4,500, but the woman called her grandson to confirm he was not in jail in New Jersey and thwarted the attempted scam.

Another Johns Creek woman lost $4,200 in Sam’s Club gift cards to a woman claiming to be her granddaughter and a man pretending to be the granddaughter’s lawyer. The scammers tried to convince her to send an additional $3,000 but the woman called her granddaughter, realized it was a scam and reported the incident on May 16.

In recent incidents of this con, scammers start by asking for a few thousand dollars, but may ask for more money after the initial payment is received. A Johns Creek woman reported on March

19 that over several weeks she had sent $90,000 in gift cards, wire transfers and cash to a woman claiming to be her granddaughter.

On May 23, an Alpharetta woman received a call from a man claiming to be her grandson and another man who called himself “Walter.” They convinced the woman to send $8,000 in cash, and later another $9,500. They later asked for an additional $6,000 which the woman could not pay. She later reported the scam to the police.

Most recently, a Roswell man reported on June 20 that he paid $4,200 in Sam’s Club gift cards to a man claiming to be a Fulton County Court attorney trying to keep his granddaughter out of jail.

Alpharetta to lose key staff position ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Peter Tokar, who presided over Alpharetta’s unprecedented business boom over the past decade, has announced he will resign as the city’s Economic Development director at the end of July.

Tokar, who headed the department for six years, said he is taking a position as president and CEO of the McKinney Economic Development Corporation in McKinney, Texas.

“This was certainly not an easy decision for me to make as Alpharetta is an amazing and flourishing city, but this is the right move for me and my family and I am excited for the next chapter Tokar in my story, even if it may involve boots and a Stetson,” Tokar said.

Matthew Thomas, recently hired as Economic Development manager, will serve as head of the office until city leaders determine how to fill the vacancy.

I recall listening to the news reports and hearing that one of the journalists managed to run outside the office but was followed by one of the assailants who finished him off on the sidewalk with a burst from his assault rifle. I have this image in my mind that I don’t think will ever leave.

Yesterday, June 28, 2018 — An angry man shot five journalists who worked for the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. The shooter appears to have harbored a grudge against the paper for publishing an accurate news story about him years ago.

Journalists being killed or impris-

oned is not something that is seen often in this country but is much more common in many other countries where the press is often persecuted and vilified by the ruling government.

Often in those countries, the press is one of the last remaining institutions defending the rights of those who are governed.

On the surface, these deaths happened in vastly different circumstance.

However, at the end of the day both are identical — journalists being killed doing their jobs, protecting the public just like our law enforcement and our armed forces that also die sometimes — just doing their jobs.

Just doing their jobs.

In news coverage of the shooting in Annapolis one thing that struck me – that made my lips quiver and caused me to have to blink back tears — was the deference and reverence — lets just call it “respect” — given to the dead journalists, as well as the newspaper, by the police, by the citizens interviewed and by elected officials.

If you watched any of the coverage, most of you heard what I am talking about here.

They get it.

‘We are putting out a damn paper’ The morning after the shooting at an Annapolis newspaper, my mom asked if my own paper receives threats.

“Of course we do,” I replied. “All the time. We aren’t doing Kathleen Sturgeon our jobs well if we don’t have haters.”

Editor kathleen@appenmediagroup.com These threats we receive usually aren’t anything to lose sleep over because they’re mostly just threats against our character, validity and intelligence. So we share the email or letter around the newsroom and move on.

But every once in a while, we do receive more sinister phone calls or emails that don’t necessarily spell out how the person would like to inflict harm, but instead just blanket threats telling us to keep our mouths shut. However, those are few and far between and typically go

away, at least to our knowledge.

And just like the reporters at the Capital Gazette, we continue on with our work because we know democracy dies in darkness, as The Washington Post eloquently puts it.

Our mission is a beacon of light shining brightly on corruption, whether the reader or subject in question likes it or not.

When I heard about the shooting, it didn’t surprise me to learn that the shooter had a vendetta against the newspaper, according to the local police.

I haven’t studied history enough to be able to say “we’ve never been as harsh on the media as we are now,” because I am sure there are times in our past where journalists were treated worse than being bombarded by tweets with poor grammar.

But that doesn’t downplay the consistent anti-media rhetoric we hear continually. I’m a bit more sensitive to it, of course due to my profession, but also because I am a strong proponent of the

First Amendment.

I won’t blame any specific politician, because we do have a right to our beliefs and opinions, whether I agree with them or not. It’s easy to point the finger at one political party or the other and their leaders, and then argue with your friends and family members because you can’t seem to agree to disagree.

Collectively, we need to realize what we spout may plant a seed in someone’s mind to think the right thing to do is kill four innocent reporters and a sales assistant, simply for doing their jobs.

Although I’ve never met them, I can bet those five loved the smell of fresh newsprint and lived for the high of getting a scoop out before their competitor, just like I do.

They are five mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, children, and friends, human beings who will never be able to go home again and hug their loved ones.

We need to remember those five individuals but also their colleagues.

They care so much about our industry and getting the facts out to their beloved community, that they printed a newspaper the next day. One beacon of light in the tragedy that unfolded was a reporter with the Capital Gazette who tweeted, “I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow.”

And on the opinion page of the next day’s paper, it said “tomorrow this page will return to its steady purpose of offering our readers informed opinion about the world around them, that they might be better citizens.” The opinion page was left chillingly blank aside from 56 words including the reporters’ names.

You don’t go to work every day thinking you may never leave, but for Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiassen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Wendi Winters, they won’t get the chance to go home.

So in their honor and memory, Appen Media Group will continue to write.

Dennis (Denny) Warren Potts was called home to heaven on June 18, 2018, to join “Bud and Shirley”. Denny was born the first of the eleven “Potts” clan on February 14th, 1951, in Dubuque, IA. He loved larger than life his two daughters and three grandchildren.

Denny’s career was spent working at his construction business in Florida and in Alpharetta, GA where he most recently resided. He would like to spend some of his free time hunting on his land in Alabama with his two brothers.

North Point revitalization receives regional assistance

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Plans to revitalize Alpharetta’s North Point Retail District will get some help, thanks to an offer from the Atlanta Regional Commission to provide critical planning services designed to improve the area’s long-term viability.

The Atlanta Regional Commission will partner with the city to develop guidelines for creation of public spaces and the installation of public art in the area around North Point Mall.

The project was one of 13 selected for support through the Atlanta Regional Commission’s new Community Development Assistance Program. The program will bring Atlanta Regional Commission staff and groups like the Urban Land

Institute, Georgia Power and Georgia Tech into partnership with the local community.

“We were greatly impressed with the diversity of projects submitted,” said Mike Alexander, Director of Atlanta Regional Commission’s Center for Livable Communities. “Collaborating with local communities is a key way ARC is helping move the region forward.”

The partnership comes just months after city leaders signed off on a Livable Centers Initiative for the North Point Area. The initiative was developed over a six-month period that began in September 2017. That effort engaged those who live, work and frequent Alpharetta to achieve a future vision for the district that reflects what those most likely to spend time there truly want.

Eric Bosman, designer and planner with Kimley-Horn consultants, told the City Council in January that surveys of residents and patrons suggest creating an environment that includes future investments in parks, sidewalks and infrastructure to make the North Point area more lively. These investments could include public art, more greenspace, or anything to add to the experience, Bosman said.

Four key ideas surfaced: • Create a “park once and walk everywhere” environment for people to enjoy a network of green spaces programmed with events and public art.

• Create multi-modal connections parallel to North Point Parkway closer to existing retail centers.

• Encourage redevelopment of large areas of surface parking to support

a grid of new streets lined by streetfronting buildings.

• Improve the area’s retail balance to offer a mix of destinations and quality retailers to draw day and night visitors.

With the news of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s initiative, city officials say they can move forward with revitalizing North Point.

“We are very excited to continue to engage Alpharetta’s citizens to advance the vision they created through the North Point LCI process,” said Kathi Cook, Alpharetta’s director of Community Development. “The assistance we will be getting from the ARC brings to bear resources that would typically cost local tax payers thousands of dollars that can now be allocated to other needs.”

Selling your neighborhood on the Fourth It’s easy to buy a house. It’s hard to buy your neighbors.

I was talking to a client last week who is looking to buy a house. They are about to start their search and wanted to narrow it down, not Geoff smith just to a zip code or Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com school district, but to a number of neighborhoods. This will be their third home and they learned a lot on the first two.

The first neighborhood they moved into was right after they got married.

The neighborhood was filled with people their age and was what sounded like a rolling party. Saturday night’s plans during the summer always started at the pool. Every holiday, or something close to a holiday, was a reason for neighbors to get together. They lived in a cul-desac, and he said if they were bored, they would just go out on the sidewalk and sit in chairs and people would start showing up.

It was a great experience, and after they had their second child and needed more room, they assumed their next neighborhood would be the same way.

They found a house in a neighborhood where they saw playsets in almost every backyard.

So they moved in ready to go through the required hazing and proving ground that would lead them to becoming a thread in the simple social fabric their neighbors already had in place – or at least thought they had in place.

After they move in, there was no welcome. The HOA president only reached out to let them know where they could send their annual dues and to tell them about the penalty for being late. When they went to the pool and told people that they were the newbies, most people only seemed mildly interested, and others seemed a little bothered.

They went through a number of feelings, first thinking that they did something wrong, then later thinking that the neighbors were a bunch of snobs with a tight clique. After a couple years of talking to people, they finally found out that there wasn’t any of that. There was no social organization. There was no “cool kids” group. This revelation was a huge relief. It wasn’t their fault, it was just that, for whatever reason, the neighbors kept to themselves.

So the next Fourth of July, they opened their house and invited their neighbors to stop by with the only draw being his pulled pork and free beer.

To their surprise, the party was a hit.

Neighbors who initially said they could only stop by for an hour, stayed all day.

One neighbor went back home and came back with his hand-crafted cornhole sets and that became a thing. My clients were actually introducing neighbors to other neighbors. The children got along because children always find a way to get their fun in. That one party, he told me, transformed the neighborhood. And now they are sad they have to leave it.

long. So they want to move to North Fulton or Forsyth County and have narrowed their search to a handful of neighborhoods. Their theory is that if a neighborhood is outgoing, it’s going to be outgoing on the Fourth of July. So their plan is to drive around this Fourth to each neighborhood and get a feel for what’s going on there.

“I really don’t care about what my neighbors do for a living – you know?” he told me. “We all work hard. I just want to chill when I come home.”

So if you live in a outgoing neighborhood in North Fulton and Forsyth County, and you would like a fun family to move in, step it up on the Fourth.

Manage your time to get things done Are you finding that you don’t have enough time to get things done while running your small business? Don’t worry; you are not alone in this regard.

We can’t create dick jones additional time in Founder & President Jones Simply Sales each day, but we can manage how we use the precious time we have.

Allocating the appropriate amount of time to complete your most important tasks and activities is critical to your success as a small business owner.

There are a number of things you need to eliminate from your daily schedule to manage your time. The first is procrastination. Waiting until the last minute to complete a task is not the best idea.

The second is over-committing.

Filling your calendar and to-do list with too many things each day will not help you adequately get things done.

The third is excuses. I’ve written about this before, and it’s a major reason why things don’t get done in your small business.

Setting goals, reasonable deadlines and holding yourself accountable is a good starting point for getting things done. Being honest with yourself on how much time it’s going to take, and prioritizing the most important activities will help you.

Minimize the distractions when working on projects with deadlines. Let the phone go to voicemail and don’t check your emails when you are working on tasks with deadlines.

Planning, prioritizing, preparation and persistence are all great things, but if you don’t manage you time, you probably won’t get things done!

Forsyth Chamber: Economic development on the rise in county

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce says economic development in the county is doing pretty well.

Speaking before the Forsyth County Commission June 28, Chamber President James McCoy said there was a 40 percent increase in new jobs in the county from 2016 to 2017. This year, there has already been 21 new project announcements, $79.7 million in new capital investment, 607 new jobs added, project inquiries are up 96 percent and project announcements are up 62 percent from this time in 2017, he said..

He said capital investment is down slightly by 12 percent from this time last year. However it is 13 percent higher for all of 2017 over 2016.

McCoy said the purpose of giving a presentation to the Forsyth County Commission is to provide accountability.

“The Chamber is an outsource vendor for economic development for Forsyth County,” he said. “There was a discussion last February about getting focused around revising how we do economic development and being more aggressive about that.”

Additionally, McCoy said the board established a definition of a Proactive Development Authority role, and reestablished the Economic Development Stakeholder Group charged with developing an interim plan, recommendations on creating a new five-year plan and on the economic development tool box.

“The purpose of all of that is so that we have a tax digest that we consider to be in balance and sustainable and one that requires greater growth of the commercial portion of the tax digest,” McCoy said. “That way homeowners will not continue to maintain as heavy of a burden as they have. The overall goal is to reduce that tax burden on homeowners and achieving an overall strong investment in the economic development program.”

The growth vision for economic development employment projected six announcements of new businesses coming to the county in 2017, but in actuality there were 55 that said they were coming to Forsyth.

That’s a 40 percent increase in new jobs announced in Forsyth County from 2016 to 2017, McCoy said.

Then from June 2017 to May 2018, there were almost 80 project announcements and nearly 1,300 jobs. Additionally, there was $159 million in new capital

It is very difficult to find anywhere in the state in any department of economic development that is seeing anywhere close to this [growth].”

James McCoy Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce President investment, which saved homeowners $1.8 million in taxes.

“It is very difficult to find anywhere in the state in any department of economic development that is seeing anywhere close to this,” McCoy said. “You’d be seeing maybe 4 or 5 or as much as 10 percent, but what this communicates is

the plan is working and it’s working well.

We’re excited about the outcome of that.”

McCoy said original projections called on the commercial portion of the tax base to increase by $910,000, but it was closer to $1.8 million. The decrease in homeowners’ tax obligation was projected to be at .25 percent, but it was much closer to half a percent.

“A lot of that is truly dependent on what they actually build,” McCoy said. “In reality, what we’ve found historically is that what they actually build has a slightly larger impact on the tax digest than what is initially thought. There are lots of reasons for that, but I say that to say this number might be a little (under).”

In total, the return on the investment for the county in the projects for the one year is 338 percent when considering the total amount invested in operations for economic development by the county, he said. McCoy expects that to be closer to 900 percent by the end of a sevenyear period because of the cumulative nature of those businesses that stay and continue to pay taxes.

Of the project announcements so far in 2018, the majority are retail, followed by service/office and technology and manufacturing comprising large chunks as well.

All kinds of animals!

The big news at our house this week is that the grandkids have moved a lot closer. Up until last Sunday, they called Illinois home.

But now their address is in North Carolina and many, STEVE HUDSON many hours closer.

Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net That’s a really great thing. Getting to Chicago to see ‘em was quite an undertaking. It’s a long way from 30009 to the far side of Chicago, and as you can imagine how that distance put a damper on getting to do things that grandparents and grandkids like to do.

Now though, they’re just a relatively quick hop, skip and jump up the road.

So I’ve been making plans.

Specifically, I’ve been looking at places through the “fun-with-thegrandkids” lens. I’m finding all sorts of possibilities. I’d like to tell you about some of the places I’m finding, too, and I think I’ll start with what went down at Haw Creek Park.

Haw Creek Park is a Forsyth County park located off Ga. 20 and Echols Road just a few miles east of Ga. 400.

Getting there is a piece of cake. Take Ga. 20 east to Echols and turn left, go around a couple of curves (one to the right and one to the left) and you’ll see the park’s entrance on your left.

There’s a second entrance off Samples Road. However, there’s no parking at the Samples Road access point. Instead, it’s just a trailhead for a spur which connects to the park’s network of more than three miles of multiuse hike-and-bike trails. If you live in the immediate area and are accessing the park direct from home, it’s good to know about this alternate entrance.

Otherwise, you’ll need to park at the main entry off Echols Road.

Haw Creek Park first caught my eye because the word “creek” is in its name.

You know me – always looking for another place to fish. So the other day I set out to try to check out the creek access situation. My plan was to hike the trails and, in the process, try to find out if the creek was accessible.

But I never got that far.

The thing that stopped my forward progress was a bunch of deer.

By “bunch” I mean about a half dozen.

When I spotted them, they were about 25 yards ahead of me, standing in the woods just off the edge of the trail.

A deer stops to take a look at its surroundings at Haw Creek Park. hopped from branch a few yards to my left. Somewhere nearby an unseen a woodpecker hammered out a riff on a tree. But none of that distracted me because I was concentrating on the deer.

Deer, of course, are not unusual hereabouts, though it is a bit out of the ordinary to get really close to them. In this case, and no doubt thanks to my great patience and extreme ninja skills, I was eventually able to ease up to within just a few yards of the nearest.

Here’s how I did it. The deer would drop its head to nibble on some tasty vegetation, putting a tree between its eyes and me, and I’d advance a foot or two. Then the deer would jerk its head up and eyeball me again. I’d freeze. After a while, the deer would lose interest and go back to grazing, allowing me to ease up another few feet. But then soon it would jerk that head up again, I’d freeze, the deer would lose interest, and so on over and over.

We continued this game of hide-andsneak for quite a while. Eventually I was able to get within just a few yards of the nearest deer. Apparently my ninja skills are that good. Or maybe the deer had simply decided that a balding and somewhat overweight middle-aged guy carrying a notebook and a cellphone really didn’t offer much of a threat. Yeah, I guess it could be that.

Anyway, by the time I’d gotten within hair-counting distance of the deer, my available time was about gone.

Shucks. The creek would have to wait till next time. So, still thinking about the wild creatures I’d gotten so close to, I turned to take the trail back to the parking area.

And that’s when I saw the giant roly

poly.

It was a good three feet long, and it was looking straight at me. I looked back – and behind it was (what else?) a patch of giant pink mushrooms. With white spots.

And near the mushrooms was a huge gray and red millipede curled up on a rock.

I blinked a couple of times to clear my eyes and looked again. That’s when I noticed the three-foot-tall pinecone.

Looking around some more, I spotted two giant acorns. Beyond them I saw bears – a big one and a couple of little ones – and all the while the giant rolypoly was just sitting there…watching.

I absorbed all of this in a span of about two seconds, and I promise you that no pink-and-white mushrooms were involved.

You know how it is when you get really focused on something? I’d been zoned in on the deer. And then I saw all the rest of it. For an instant it didn’t make sense.

Then I realized what I’d found: a set of play areas (the county calls ‘em “playground pods”) at Haw Creek Park, each done up in a woodland wildlife theme. They’re really very close to the main parking area, and they even sport benches where the rest of us can sit and watch while our kids or grandkids have a field day and imaginations run wild.

Deer, squirrels, birds, bears, multicolored millipedes and a giant roly poly, too.

There are all kinds of animals at Haw Creek Park, sure enough.

I can’t wait to show this one to the grandkids!

Summer is here — and for many of us, that means that it is home improvement season!

Reclaimed furniture (especially custom vanities) Over the past few years, reclaimed wood and metal have become fashionable materials for creating unique items like dining room tables, coffee tables and workstations. Lately, the idea has taken a natural next step toward using one piece of furniture for a different purpose.

Highly popular this year, for example, are converted vanities — finding old chests of drawers, cabinets, consoles, etc. and converting them into unique, rustic bathroom vanities. Not only does this process add texture to your home and create a conversation piece, but repurposing furniture also helps the environment.

2. “Working wall” in the kitchen As more of us look to free up space or “minimize,” the trend is toward making the most use of existing space.

One-way homeowners are doing this is to dispense with excessive cabinetry throughout the kitchen (often placed out of reach) and create a single “working wall” where all the items are stored, giving the rest of the kitchen a clean, open and uncluttered feel.

3. Matte appliance finishes Stainless steel is still a design standard, as are counter-depth fridges and “hidden” appliances with facades that blend into the décor. But forwardthinking designers are now starting to incorporate matte finishes into new appliances, creating a warm, nonintrusive look. (Runner-up: if you want to head the opposite direction and add bold colors, take a look at the new 1950s-style retro fridges that are coming out in bold reds, oranges, blues, etc. This is also a popular trend.)

The Rule of 1.5. When a prospective buyer assesses the value of your home they will apply the Rule of 1.5 to any room that requires remodeling, that is if they don’t just pass on your home. For example, if they believe a new kitchen will be $40k, they will discount your home by $40k times 1.5 or $60K. Same goes with the master bathroom. So you can see how brutal the Rule of 1.5 can be for the homeowner. This really hits home when offers come in very low or the realtor suggests successive listing price drops.

So what’s the answer? First and foremost, don’t postpone remodeling to when you’re about to sell, because you won’t get to live and enjoy it. Secondly, remodel the rooms that will show the strongest return on your investment and thirdly, do it in a style that most people would enjoy.

Exterior shutter trends for 2018 Exterior Shutters plays an important part in the overall look and feel of your home. Let’s explore some of the popular trends we see for 2018.

Simplicity: Try using simple shutters for a pure, uncluttered effect to allow other beautiful features on the outside of your home to shine. It is in line with minimalism, where you incorporate clean, refreshing looks, while adding a nice touch to your decor.

To follow this trend, use shutters with sharp lines, minimal details and neutral colors. Here we will propose something like a flat panel shutter, and/ or a shutter with one large single panel, or even a board and batten style with no battens (horizontal pieces).

Lighten up: Color plays a big role in the overall appearance of your home, and while exterior shutters are typically dark colored, we’ve seen an uptick in lighter colored shutters. This works especially well when trying to modernize the look of an older building. Light colored walls, combined with shutters in a slightly darker hue seems to be the norm. Whites and greys works very well and is a trend that will be with us for a while.

Stick with the basics: Exterior shutters should never overpower the look of your house and not all homes lend itself to the exotic. There’s nothing wrong with some traditional Raised Panel style shutters or even Louvered shutters to give a traditional, formal house a neat and tidy look. Board and Batten shutters works well on a house

with a mix of exterior surfaces (brick and stone, or siding and shingles). For Raised Panel style shutters, make sure the panels mimic the windows, for Louvers you can try a wider slat, and with Board and Batten shutters we see a trend to use more, but narrower Boards (vertical pieces).

Add flair and personality: Another subtle way of giving you home a oneof-a-kind appearance is to add custom cutouts to your shutters. Let your home’s personality shine with just about any shape you can imagine, from stars and crescent moons to palm trees and hearts. Go bold and traditional with a full cutout, or subtle and interesting with only a small relief cut on the outside corner. This obviously only works on paneled or Board and Batten style shutters.

Jordan Yates commits to Georgia Tech Milton quarterback signs entering senior season

“It’s a great feeling to know I’ll be going to a school like Georgia Tech, not just for the football program but also academically” Yates said. “The school has a lot of history and I’ll be able to play in one of the best conferences in the country. I’ll also be close to home so my family can come see games and I can travel back and forth.”

Yates compiled nearly 3,000 total yards in his 2017 junior campaign where he started all 12 games for the Eagles. He averaged 168 yards passing per game, racking up 2,011 yards with

A witness was able to video part of the incident after she heard the woman screaming.

The video showed the man jumping into a red Honda Civic and head southbound on Jones Bridge Road.

The suspect is described as a white man in his late 20s wearing Khaki shorts, a red shirt and a red baseball cap. The woman said he was tall and had blond hair and possibly a rough beard.

The woman’s purse was a green and gray “REI” bag with shoulder straps that contained her phone and wallet.

When the woman called the number provided, a man told her that she had a “bad virus” and had to buy a $750 gift card and read off the number to purchase a virus protection package.

She did so, but the man said the card’s number was invalid and persuaded her to buy another.

In all, the woman bought and read off the numbers for three $750 cards before realizing it was a scam.

Police find naked man sleeping in parking lot MILTON, Ga. — A man sleeping naked in a parking lot was cited for indecency on June 24.

While patrolling a shopping center on North Main Street in Milton, an officer spotted a white van with its side door completely open. He noticed a man in the back of the van lying on a mattress.

According to the police report, the man was sleeping naked on top of a blanket and his genitals were completely exposed. The officer woke the man using verbal commands. When the man awoke he “seemed startled” and pulled the blanket over himself, the report said.

The man told the officer he went to an AA meeting the night before and decided to sleep in the van instead of going home because he was tired. He said he removed his clothes and opened the door because he was warm.

The man was cited for indecency and was advised not to sleep on the property, “clothed or not,” without permission from the owner.
