Ga. Supreme Court rules on part of DUI law

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — Local police departments are bracing for changes brought on by a recent Georgia Supreme Court decision.

On Feb. 18, the court released a unanimous opinion that the refusal of a breath test for blood alcohol levels cannot be used against the driver in a trial. Doing so violates a person’s right against self-incrimination in the Georgia Constitution, the court said in the opinion.

“We acknowledge that the state has a considerable interest in prosecuting DUI offenses (and thereby deterring others), and that our decision today may make that task more difficult,” the opinion said. “[But], the right to be free from compelled self-incrimination does not wax or wane based on the severity of a defendant’s alleged crimes…

“This court cannot change the Georgia Constitution, even if we believe there may be good policy reasons for doing so;

Police arrest woman found with fake $100 bills ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a woman Feb. 11 after store employees realized she had attempted to purchase items with fake $100 bills.

Police arrived at the Jo-Ann Fabrics on North Point Drive after an employee called about a woman with a suspicious bill.

The woman was found in a nearby store, again attempting to use a fake bill.

The woman initially gave a fake name to police. She was later identified as 23-year-old Jeannie Pirkle of Norcross, who also had an active Gwinnett County warrant for forgery.

She was arrested for two counts of first degree forgery, giving a false name and on warrant.

The court decision stems from the prosecution of Andrea Elliot after a Clark County police officer stopped her for traffic violations and DUI. She refused a breathalyzer test and was jailed, after which her attorney filed to repress her refusal and was denied. Elliot then appealed to the Georgia Supreme Court.

Both the Alpharetta and Roswell police departments have said they are considering changes to their DUI arrest procedures.

“In light of the new ruling, we’re continuing to aggressively enforce our DUI laws to keep our roadways safe, and read the Georgia Implied Consent notice in its entirety,” said Alpharetta Sergeant Howard Miller. “The only change we’re making is that when we suspect a person of driving while intoxicated, we’re only going to request they take a state administered blood test.”

Employee loses $2,900 to boss impersonator ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a Feb. 13 incident in which a scammer, posing as a woman’s boss, convinced her to transfer $2,900 in gift cards.

The woman, who works at an architectural firm on Royal Boulevard South, received an urgent email that afternoon that appeared to be from her boss.

Following the email’s instructions, the woman went to two different stores to purchase several iTunes gift cards.

She realized it was a scam after one store employee suggested the email could be fraudulent. At that point, the woman had already sent the scammer $2,900 worth of gift cards.

Wallet stolen from car while parked at gym ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are looking for a man suspected of stealing a man’s wallet from the LA Fitness on Windward Parkway.

The victim parked outside the gym at

3 p.m. on Feb. 10 and placed his wallet and glasses in the center console of his car. He secured his keys in a gym locker.

An hour later, the victim saw his locker was open, and his keys were gone. His wallet was also missing from his car.

While talking to police, the victim received an alert that his credit card had been used at a nearby Target.

Police contacted the store and obtained security footage of a man using the victim’s credit card.

Company billed $1,600 for mysterious packages ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a Feb. 11 incident in which Ascenda BioSciences was billed $1,600 for several illegitimate overnight packages.

The company usually receives about 10 packages a night that contain medical samples for testing, an employee said. But that night, the company received four times the usual amount.

Alpharetta blasts legislators for ‘selling out’ to telecom companies State officials counter city failed to make case to exempt itself from bill

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta officials blasted state legislators for supporting a bill that would give utilities greater latitude in deploying fifth-generation wireless equipment in public right of way.

The pending legislation comes months after the city spent weeks and thousands of dollars in legal fees to draft an ordinance that would provide some protections against the industry’s installation of new 5G equipment. The fifthgeneration technology rolling out across the country is expected to be 10 to 100 times faster than the current LTE network and will allow for the connection density to support billions of devices. “[The legislation] basically shreds everything we did to protect our residents — and the right of way that they own,” a fuming Mayor Jim Gilvin said at the Jan. 18 City Council meeting. “I’m still baffled how the state has the gall to tell

us what we should be doing with right of way that our residents pay for and maintain.”

As part of its effort to promote economic development in rural areas of the state, the 2019 Legislature is considering a number of bills that would smooth deployment of 5G wireless technology.

Part of that legislation, specifically House Bill 184, provides the telecom industry with freer rein over where they can add the new equipment. That bill passed the House Feb. 14 by a vote of 170 to 1 and awaits action by the Senate.

Last fall, in an effort to protect itself in anticipation of the legislation, Alpharetta assigned a special attorney to study new federal guidelines on 5G deployment and to work with industry leaders to draw up new standards for placing equipment in the city’s public right of way.

Those standards, adopted by the City Council Nov. 12, allowed access to previously off-limits territory for the 5G deployment — street light or street light poles, for example. But the city was careful to prohibit adding equipment to pedestrian lights or any decorative poles.

It also drew limits on the dimensions for boxes and the length of antennas.

The city’s attorney on the issue, Scott Hastey said the House bill “pretty much” overrides everything the city adopted to protect itself.

“I’m very frustrated by this,” Gilvin said. “We asked our state representatives to represent our constituents’ best interests.”

The mayor added that rural areas should be given the opportunity to advance economic development through the 5G rollout. But, he said, cities like Alpharetta that have taken the initiative to craft their own guidelines to accommodate the industry should be exempted from the legislation.

Council criticism gets heated Councilman Ben Burnett said he saw this coming.

“I know how the special interest lobby works,” he said. “I know how people down there get elected. Unless you’re running for elected office and you need the support of your locally elected official…the only time you see them is if they’re running for Congress or on the back of a milk carton.”

Councilman Donald Mitchell was less diplomatic.

“I’m looking at one of our state repre-

sentatives (whom he did not name), last year alone, he received $700 from the Realtor PAC, $1,000 from the contractor PAC, the affordable housing PAC, $500, the building PAC, $500,” Mitchell said.

“This is no longer a state legislature that cares about the citizens of our state more than they care for the lobbying groups.”

State legislators respond Contacted following the meeting, Speaker of the House Pro Tem Jan Jones (R-Milton) said it was new federal guidelines that went into effect Jan. 14 that overrode Alpharetta’s ordinance.

The legislation passed in the House, she said, strikes a balance between residents’ needs for next generation wireless broadband and cities’ desire to determine placement of equipment.

“Both matter greatly to me,” she said in a statement. “The overwhelming majority of Georgia cities support the bill because it allows local governments much more authority than recently enacted federal rules.”

Since February 14, Jones said, the city has been out of compliance with the new federal rules.

Fulton County approves spending for community programs

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County Commissioners committed $6 million to community service programs, divided by 82 nonprofits, at their Feb. 20 meeting.

Funding community service programs is the county’s primary avenue for providing social service programs.

Its plan targets five areas: children and youth services, disabilities, economic stability and poverty, homelessness and senior services.

Two Roswell-based charities were among the top recipients. North Fulton Community Charities, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting poverty in the north suburbs, and Home Stretch, which helps homeless families find housing, both accepted $100,000.

Other North Fulton recipients included Senior Services North Fulton, which received $90,000 for senior transportation and the Drake House, which received $97,000 to combat homelessness.

North Fulton Commissioners Lee Morris and Liz Hausmann both supported the community service funding but questioned the process for allocating funds.

“We increased the allotment this year, and we still have some agencies that do very, very good work in the community

that may have missed it by one point,” Hausmann said.

The current framework was approved in November 2016. Nonprofits apply in September and October and are scored on several factors, such as need and past performance, by two randomly assigned jurors.

In another decision, the commission also approved agreements with the Johns Creek Arts Center for $300,000 and with the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell for $700,000 — $200,000 for recurring education programs and $500,000 for capital projects.

Fulton official outlines future of county mental health services

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County Chief Operating Officer Anna Roach says Fulton County is striving to be a leader in mental and behavioral health services.

Speaking at the Roswell Rotary Club at Roswell Area Park Feb. 21, Roach laid out recent and upcoming changes that she said will help the county make greater strides.

The topic strikes close to home for Roswell Rotary. The club lost a member a few years ago because of mental health issues, said past President Bob Hagan.

“It’s so great to hear that Fulton County is doing something,” Hagan said.

“It’s the only county that’s doing something. I applaud our commissioners because it is a very, very serious situation.”

Mental and behavioral health issues don’t exist in a vacuum, Roach said.

They impact several aspects of people’s lives and Fulton County services.

“We feel the impact and burden on other services that we provide,” Roach said. “Our jail population and our criminal justice services, for example.”

She said that it becomes a vicious cycle — people with mental illness can become homeless, commit crimes because of their mental illness and get put in the criminal justice system. And when they’re let out, the cycle repeats.

“If we don’t get real serious about addressing mental health in Fulton County, we will feel those pressures and additional costs in other areas of the county,” Roach said. “The more we invest in mental health in Fulton County, the less pressure we will see on other services.”

The good news, Roach added, is that the Fulton County Board of Commissioners over the past few years has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to behavioral health.

In less than one year after implementing the new model, Fulton County doubled the amount of people served from 1,500 to 3,000 without any increase in funds, Roach said.

Fulton County has also consolidated behavioral health services provided by other government agencies into one.

The county has several plans in the works for future additions and upgrades to its mental and behavioral health services.

County leaders are currently looking at possible properties in the Roswell

area for a comprehensive health facility in North Fulton.

With this facility, the county hopes to consolidate primary and mental health care under one roof and expand services for a growing population, Roach said.

North Fulton is growing at a much faster rate than anywhere else in the county and is facing emerging issues like the opioid crisis, she added.

The facility could help address such issues unique to the area.

The county is also working to in crease advocacy and awareness about mental health at a state level.

Fulton County provides several avenues for mental health and addiction treatment services for all age groups, regardless of their ability to pay.

Walk-in services are available for residents who do not have insurance and are offered on a sliding scale fee basis that considers income and family size. Anyone interested is asked to bring a government-issued identification and mail as proof of residence; a wage statement from the Georgia Department of Labor or the two most recent pay stubs; a current list of medications with dosage and frequency; and a legal guardian if the person is under 18 years old.

Adult behavioral health services are contracted with River Edge Behavioral Health, while child and adolescent services is contracted with Chris 180.

“Behavioral health is one of those things that have been hush-hush at the dinner table for a very long time,” Roach said. “Thankfully, in the last several years, we’ve seen more conversations open up about individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues across the nation.

And we’re thankful for that.”

Georgia launches crisis app for mental health

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — The state of Georgia is now making it easier for teenagers and young adults to access resources of mental and behavioral health help.

On Feb. 14, the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities launched its Georgia Crisis and Access Line app. The app, now available in the Apple and Android app stores, allows people to text or call during a crisis and connect with licensed professionals. The help is available at all hours throughout the entire year.

Gov. Brian Kemp said the app was created after state officials met with teachers, administrators and providers to discuss the kinds of problems their students face. Time and time again, they cited mental and behavioral health concerns, he said.

“These students and school systems face everything from substance abuse and teen suicide to broken families and psychological challenges,” Kemp said.

“By providing an instant service to a child or young adult in need, I believe this app can and will save lives. Behavioral and mental health issues are prevalent and growing in our classrooms, and

I’m excited to work with DBHDD and the legislature to continue to tackle these very important issues.”

The app is unique in that it provides texting options. Most teenagers and young adults are much more likely to text instead of call, so the app will expand resources to those in need, said Judy Fitzgerald, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.

“We need these kids to know that it’s not bad to text somebody if you need help,” Kemp said. “It’s OK to do that. If you see something, say something, text something, so we know. We’ve got people who can help.”

Before the app’s launch, the Georgia Crisis and Access Line received over 1,000 calls a day from people in crisis or people calling on behalf of a loved one for help. That number is expected to

Orwell would love today’s marketers I get confused when I see certain words assembled into newly coined terms that mean almost the opposite of what they once meant.

In some cases these little nostrums are efforts to blunt pat Fox the pain of paying for Editor pat@appenmediagroup.com a product. Sometimes, they’re just someone’s attempt to be clever. In both cases, they’re just silly.

Let me give you some examples: Payment coupon — Back in the day, a “coupon” was a good thing, a piece of paper entitling you to a price reduction.

Coupons were desired — revered even.

People clipped them out of the Sunday paper. Children had their own scissors, sat with mom around the kitchen table, rescuing the family from ruin, ensuring solvency, driving bargains.

Now, the term “coupon” has become associated with pain, pain over the realization that I owe someone money.

Do you know what companies used to call these little slips of paper at the bottom of a bill?

Nothing.

Marketers have always taken liberties with the truth, often promising something more than they can honestly deliver.

They didn’t have a word. And everybody was happy. They kept their mouth shut, tore the stupid thing off and mailed it back with a check, then forgot about it.

Salad kit — This one really threw me when I first saw it on supermarket shelves, again back in the late 1990s.

Most people above the age of 20 associate the term “kit” exclusively with a model airplane or car one assembles from parts. It was a fun word when I was a kid.

But it wasn’t just toys.

I helped my dad assemble a tube amplifier kit when I was 8. I didn’t know what I was doing, because he hooked it up to a microphone, ran wire and speakers

into our upstairs bedrooms and used it to wake us up for school every morning.

There he’d sit, down in the kitchen, sipping coffee and howling on the microphone. Sometimes, he’d sing, accidentally stumbling on the ultimate cure for childhood narcosis.

Convenience fee — C’mon.

How does one chart the degree of insult in this term? I’d put it at a 10 on the Richter scale of effrontery.

I couldn’t come up with a better way to say: “Thanks for your loyalty, now here’s a little something extra on your bill for inconveniencing us.”

I pay my cell phone bill each month by driving to a retailer conveniently located down the street. I can either fork over the cash to a teller or use my debit card in an ATM-like machine in the corner. Either way, it’s a burden to them because they charge me $3 extra as a “convenience fee.”

Inactivity fee — A friend showed me his February bill for his home equity line of credit. It included a $50 inactivity fee.

He called the bank and, after several minutes, spoke with a “team member” who explained the charge comes when the customer goes a year without charging something against the loan. Each month, my friend pays the interest, plus

a little on the principal and forgets about it.

As he explained it to me, he took the loan to make home improvements. Since then, he’s been committed to paying the loan back — not adding to it.

After the “team member” explained the fee, here’s how the conversation concluded: Team member: “Is there anything else I can help you with today?

My friend: “No, I guess not, unless you can erase that inactivity fee.”

Team member: “Let me see what I can do.”

Guess what. The bank removed the fee with a stern warning that it would pop up again if the credit line wasn’t used within 12 months.

Small victory.

I look forward to the day when I receive a bill for an online order that says: “Thanks for purchasing our salad ingredients. Our cost was $5. Yours is $6.50.

A $1.9 million federal grant will fast-forward Fulton County Schools plan to replace diesel-powered buses with propane-powered school buses well ahead of schedule.

In 2017, the district set a goal to replace 300 of its nearly 760 large buses to propane power; saving thousands of dollars in maintenance and significantly reducing emissions.

“With this EPA grant and additional incentives, we’ll eclipse our five-year goal of 300 propane buses for our fleet when we open school next August,” said Sam Ham, executive director of the district’s Transportation Department.

The grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will help the school system replace 85 additional dieselpowered buses with propane-powered school buses. Proceeds from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax will cover the rest of the fleet.

EPA officials praised Fulton County Schools’ ongoing efforts toward energy efficiency.

“The Fulton County School System has shown its commitment to reducing the impact of diesel emissions with the early retirement of older dirtier school buses,” said EPA Acting Region 4 Administrator Mary Walker. “Combined with the clean school bus idle reduction policy, the school system has demonstrated a strong commitment to children’s health and the environment.”

In pursuing the grant, Fulton Schools received support from Roswell Transportation Director Steve Acenbrak; East Point Mayor Deana Ingraham and Johns Creek City Manager Warren Hutmacher.

During a presentation to the Fulton County School Board two years ago, Ham said both the environment and taxpayers are the big winners in the move from diesel to propane.

Propane-powered buses will save $3,500 in fuel annually per bus. The engines are also easier to maintain than diesel engines, saving even more on parts and labor.

“If you look at the numbers through the next five years of replacing 70 buses each year, you are looking at $5.5 million going back to the classroom over that period,” Ham noted.

The new buses cost about $6,000 to $8,000 more than diesel powered buses.

Developer sues Alpharetta for blocking extended stay hotel

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Developers behind a proposed extended stay hotel on Webb Bridge Road are suing the City of Alpharetta for denying their request for a conditional use permit for the project.

HOS Management, which operates about half a dozen hotels in southern Georgia and northern Florida, and the property owner, Krishan Gandhi, are asking the court to reverse a City Council decision denying a permit that would allow construction of a 4-story, 128-room Hyatt House hotel on Webb Bridge Road near Morris Road. The suit, filed Feb. 13 in Fulton County Superior Court, also seeks attorney’s fees.

The lawsuit stems from a Jan. 14 meeting in which the council voted 7-0 to deny the request.

It also comes amid recent discussions among council members that police are fielding a higher incidence of calls summoning them to hotels throughout the city.

The property at issue is currently zoned for office and institutional use and falls within the Preston Ridge Master Plan, which contemplates a 500-acre mixed-use development featuring office, multi-family residential, industrial, commercial and hotel uses.

The suit states that prior to 2015, the city’s Uniform Development Code nor the Preston Ridge Master Plan distinguished between traditional hotels and extended stay hotels. Those documents have since been revised to include a separate definition for extended stay hotels.

The suit claims HOS Management’s proposal had no facilities for self-serve laundry and thus does not fall within the definition for extended stay hotels.

It also notes that directly west of the property is approximately 4 acres zoned office and institutional where a Home2 Suites extended stay hotel is currently under construction.

There are currently 26 hotels operating in Alpharetta, eight of them extended stay, and four of them are within the Preston Ridge Master Plan area. Another half dozen traditional hotels are under construction representing 722 rooms.

And, while Alpharetta has several sites available for construction of traditional hotels, there are no sites approved for extended stay.

Data gathered from Alpharetta Public Safety shows that over the past 30 months, police received more calls for service to the eight extended stay hotels than to the 18 traditional hotels operating in the city, according to Michael Woodman, senior planner with the city.

Woodman told the council Jan. 14 that, based in part on the crime data, the city planning staff determined another extended stay hotel would adversely affect crime in the area and would negatively impact occupancy rates at other hotels in the city.

The lawsuit alleges the city’s denial of the permit was arbitrary, capricious, lacked any rational basis and constituted a “manifest abuse of discretion” that unreasonably restricts the property’s development. portunities for employment to aid in the transition to stable housing.

The firm makes a financial gift and will hold a fundraiser later this year to generate additional funds. Lawyers and staff will also volunteer.

In addition to choosing one nonprofit partner, MMMPact has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to nonprofits over the years.

South Fulton students disciplined for drug-laced edibles 28 children sent to hospital after Valentine’s Day incident

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com Five Sandtown Middle School students face punishment over a Valentine’s Day incident that sent 28 students to the hospital after marijuana-laced food items were distributed at the school.

Because of privacy laws, no information about the students was provided.

Fulton School System officials said the investigation continues and other students may face charges for violating the district’s drug-free policy. It has not been determined if the students will face criminal charges by outside law enforcement authorities.

All five students have been charged with consumption, possession and/or the distribution of illegal substances. Punishment falls under “Tier IV: Serious Acts of Misconduct” of the district’s Student Code of Conduct, which carries the highest level of consequences.

“These acts may be grounds for expulsion and automatically result in a mandatory 10-day suspension with [possible] long-term suspension, expulsion and/ or assignment to an alternative education program,” said Cliff Jones, chief academic officer for Fulton County Schools.

Last week, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed THC (a chemical compound of cannabis/

marijuana) was found in initial tests of food items collected at Sandtown Middle School on Feb. 14.

The incident report from the Fulton Schools Police Department described the items as “heart shaped lollipops and Rice Krispie treats.”

The GBI crime lab will continue to test all 46 items collected from Sandtown, and the results will be made public.

Jones noted not all 28 children transported to area hospitals on Feb. 14 may have ingested the tainted items. Any student reporting to the school clinic that day complaining of illness was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

“It is possible that not all students who were transported ingested illegal substances,” said Jones, noting only four of the 28 students were kept overnight for observation.

The incident report from the Fulton School Police said some students were complaining of “disorientation, hallucinating, red watery eyes….and crying” around noon on Feb. 14.

As a result of the incident, the Fulton County School System is preparing a district-wide campaign on the issue of drug safety and dangers of accepting food items from unknown sources.

Why “edibles” pose a new danger to kids Recreational use of marijuana is now legal in 10 states and the District of Columbia. A total of 33 states allow the use of medical marijuana.

In Georgia, medicinal marijuana is legal for those with certain medical ailments. The current law does not allow medical marijuana to be grown or transported in the state.

The trend toward decriminalizing marijuana has led to a booming industry of cannabis-infused edibles – many of which mimic kid-friendly items like gummy bears, lollipops and chocolate bars.

Statistics show a sharp uptick in the number of emergency room visits for children mistaking “weed candy” for real candy, with serious consequences.

According to officials with the Children’s Hospital of Colorado, where marijuana has been legal in the state for five years, marijuana ingested as an edible can have a stronger and prolonged effect in children because of their body size.

The primary concern is dosage. One pack of cannabis-infused gummy treats can contain 100 milligrams of THC — potentially 20 times the recommended dose for the casual marijuana user.

Laws restrict advertising that would appeal to children, such as using cartoon characters, but the onus still relies on parental supervision.

North Fulton March for Babies kicks off campaign

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The North Fulton March for Babies has kicked off its drive to raise funds and awareness for healthy babies and mothers.

On Feb. 20, dozens of people gathered at The Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta to celebrate the beginning of the campaign, which will culminate on Saturday, April 27 with the North Fulton March for Babies walk at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Alpharetta.

March for Babies is a part of March of Dimes, which works to research, advocate, support and educate to improve pregnancy health and preterm birth prevention.

March of Dimes currently rates Georgia with a grade D for preterm birth rates, the largest contributor to infant death and long-term health problems for children who survive. The state also has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the nation.

Fulton County also holds a grade D, with an 11.2 percent preterm birth rate that has worsened since last year.

To help combat the problem, some of March of Dimes’ top legislative priorities in 2019 include funding newborn screening, funding for perinatal levels of care and preventing maternal mortality.

“It takes every single one of us to really make a difference in this community,” said North Fulton March for Babies Development Manager Victoria Stamps. “Today is about inspiring each other to launch this season and make this the best year ever.”

million over 300 communities.

This year, the North Fulton branch has set its fundraising goal at $475,000, and the theme is “Small Town Georgia.”

“One thing that I truly love so much about North Fulton is how passionate our families and volunteers are,” Stamps said. “You all are truly the heart and soul of this community.”

This commitment and passion can be seen in some of the top family teams for 2018, Stamps added. The teams include Jake’s Journey and Sawyer’s Strides, Jay Birds and Team Zac. Jake’s Journey and Sawyer’s Strides alone raised over a quarter of a million dol-

lars over the 10 years it has participated in March for Babies.

The ambassador family for this year is the Broughton Family.

“Through my 40 years of working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Northside Hospital, I have met so many incredible families, the little warriors who I have seen fight and some not make it to go home in their mother’s arms,” said Linda Kelly, the 2019 North Fulton March for Babies chair. “I have been blessed to have been able to see and meet so many incredible little heroes and their families. That is what drives me to continue our fight for helping babies and helping moms.”

This year’s local sponsors include Northside Hospital, Synergis and E*Trade Financial.

March for Babies will hold a special mini-golf event on March 30 at Aurora Cineplex in Roswell. The campaign will finish with its signature walk on April 27 that will follow a three-mile route starting at 2200 Encore Parkway in Alpharetta.

Police charge man with shoplifting shirts ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man on Feb. 11 for shoplifting shirts from the Macy’s on North Point Circle.

The man entered the store that afternoon and allegedly took several shirts into the changing room. He then exited without any of the shirts, the loss prevention officer said. None of the shirts were in the changing room.

The man then paid for an item and was stopped by the loss prevention officer after leaving.

The man, later identified as 53-yearold Andre Flow of Marietta, had three shirts hidden on his person and was arrested.

The incident was caught on security cameras.

There we were, sitting inside in relative warmth, while outside it was cold and windy and rainy too. The sofa was cozy, the hot chocolate was hot, and the puppy curled up beside me was doing STEVE HUDSON a good job of keeping Get Outside Georgia, my feet warm. aa4bw@comcast.net I don’t like cold weather because my feet get cold, and I hate having cold feet. Maybe that’s why God created puppies, especially soft and fuzzy ones like Ellie the Miniature Schnauzer. Soft and fuzzy puppies are excellent foot warmers.

There’s another thing you should know about Mini Schnauzers. They do not particularly like water, especially when it’s of the cold and wind-driven kind.

“We don’t like water much at all,” Ellie said, looking at me with those brown puppy eyes, “unless it’s served chilled in our water dishes. We definitely don’t like it when it blows on our delicate puppy ears. So I’m okay with sitting here for as long as you want, or at least till the mail truck comes down the street and I have to get up and bark for a while.”

Ellie and I have conversations like that all the time. This looked like it was going to be an interesting one, too, and I’m sure that’s how it would have gone had it not been interrupted by the ringing of Wife of Mine’s cell phone.

“Hello?” she said, answering. She listened intently for a moment. Then she turned to me and held out the phone in my direction.

“It’s for you,” she said. “It’s your mom.”

I took the phone and said “hello” myself, but rather than the usual pleasantries I got a question instead: “You’re gonna do what???”

Uh oh, I thought.

“Hi there!” I said to my mom.

Again came the question: “You’re not really going to do that, are you?” The words were delivered in that unique tone that only a mom who thinks one of her kids is contemplating something truly dumb can use.

“Yep,” I replied. “Afraid so.”

Ellie looked up at me and rolled her doggy eyes, as if to say, “You’d better listen to your momma. She knows things.

But you probably won’t, will you?”

Probably not, I thought in Ellie’s direction.

“And you’re going to do it anyway, aren’t you?” Ellie added.

Probably so.

About that time my daughter walked through the front door. She was visiting us and had just gotten back from the store.

“Hi Dad!” she said. “Can you help me bring in groceries? And did you call the scuba place?”

Yes, scuba. As in underwater.

So the rumor is now public, and it’s true. Here’s how it happened.

Among the presents awaiting me under the Christmas tree a couple of months back was a stack of boxes to me from my daughter, all tied up in a neat ribbon. The idea was to open them one at a time, from the top of the stack down, and as I unwrapped each one, a theme began to emerge. An underwater slate…a set of neoprene dive gloves…a mask…a snorkel…fins…

And there was a certificate too, an elegant piece of paper announcing that, yes, I’d been gifted with a complete and comprehensive scuba class. All I had to do was to call and sign up for one of the classes.

“So did you call, Dad?” my daughter asked. “We have to get you signed up, you know!”

Ellie looked at me again and said, clear as day, “Scuba involves going underwater. Underwater is for fish. You are not a fish.” Yeah, but I’m teachable! I replied. It’ll be a great adventure!

The fact is that I’ve been enamored with the idea of scuba diving ever since, as a child, I spent untold hours watching “Sea Hunt” on the black-and-white Philco TV by the window in the den. Yes, black and white. Can you imagine such a thing? It was primitive, all right. But those grainy, low-def images sparked the youthful adventurer in me. Someday, I remember saying, I’ll have to try that scuba thing myself.

Now, about five decades later, “someday” had arrived.

“Are you really going to do that?” my mom’s voice asked yet again over the phone.

Yep, I probably am.

“No ‘probably,’ Dad!” my daughter said. “It’s a definite go. In fact, I’ve made us an appointment to go over to the scuba place on Saturday for your orientation!”

Yes, when that one makes up her mind … So we went. I got fitted for my mask and fins, and I upgraded to the snorkel that’s said to keep the water where it belongs. I scheduled my class dates, too.

This particular adventure will unfold over the next few months. I’ll keep you posted and let you know how it goes.

“The vision behind LoveLifts Village is to create an environment that fosters a sense of community for area nonprofit organizations in search of flexible, affordable office and co-working space in a professional work setting,” said Shane Jackson, president of Jackson Healthcare. “In this environment, they can continue to advance their missions of serving others in a space that enables them to collaborate, share ideas and best practices, and grow in community with other like-minded organizations.”

Leases for LoveLifes Village last for a minimum of six months and include reception, parking, cleaning, security and internet services. Anyone interested in applying must be a registered 501(c)(3) organization.

“We want LoveLifts Village to be a thriving hub for nonprofits in North Fulton,” said Jackson Healthcare vice president of Community Impact Keith Jennings. “We believe that by bringing these organizations together under one roof, it can foster collaboration, best-practice, and idea-sharing and innovation. The more successful nonprofits can become, the greater the impact they will have on communities locally and around the world.”

LoveLifts Village is Jackson Healthcare’s latest addition to its LoveLifts initiative to help the community through volunteerism, business mobilization, supportive partnerships and corporate giving. The village is part of that social mission and is the brainchild of President Shane Jackson, Jennings said.

“Given our organization’s active support of hundreds of nonprofits over the years, Shane was aware that many struggle to find dependable, flexible office space,” Jennings said. “With our recent campus expan-

While LoveLifts Village was created primarily to provide space for nonprofits, it also serves a critical function by providing more visibility for the nonprofits, Jennings said.

“Another key part of the vision for LoveLifts Village is having our associates intersect and interact with these nonprofits on our campus,” he said. “Our hope is that this brings ‘lift’ to both our associates and these organizations through volunteerism, knowledge sharing and support.

Other amenities at LoveLifts Village will include a

breakroom with coffee and tea as well as conference and meeting spaces. Tenants will also have access to the restaurants and fitness center on the Jackson Healthcare campus for purchase.

The first tenant has already moved into the first office space available. Jackson Healthcare is in the process of moving out of the building, and the full space is expected to be available this summer for other nonprofits to use, Jennings said.

They have already gotten a lot of strong interest in the space, he added.

Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Q&A

By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta As a Mohs surgeon, my primary job is treating the three most common skin cancers – basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carciDr. Taylor noma, and melanoma.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the skin cancer that often causes the most confusion, partially because it shares the name “squamous cell” with other squamous cell cancers that do not arise from the skin. Recently, patients have asked questions about cutaneous (skinderived) SCC, and their questions and answers are worth repeating given how common this cancer is and how many readers are likely either affected by it or have a loved one with cutaneous SCC. Q: Is squamous cell of the skin the same as squamous cell of the lung?

A: No, SCC of the skin and SCC of the lung are not directly related. The reason that they share the word “squamous” is because in both locations, these epithelial cells look similar under the microscope. Cells in these locations overlap one another similar to how scales of a fish or shingles on a roof overlap, and “squama” is latin for scale. SCC of the skin and lung differ markedly in terms of what causes cancer (for example, ultraviolet damage vs smoking), how they are treated, and prognosis.

Q: Why, then are cells growing in such a similar fashion in the skin and the lungs?

A: In both locations, squamous cells come in contact with air, and the overlapping design of squamous cells allows them to decrease evaporative water loss and protect underlying tissue from damage caused by outside air or irritants. In the case of the lungs, the “outside” air happens to be inside our bodies while we breath, but the same principle applies.

Squamous cells offer protection and a more limited exchange of “outside” influences with deeper body tissues.

Q: Is squamous cell of the skin as serious as squamous cell of the lung?

A: In general, no. Because SCC of the skin arises on the skin, we usually notice it when it is not advanced, and patients and dermatologists can typically catch SCC of the skin very early. Approximately 1 million SCCs of the skin are diagnosed each year, and only about

15,000 deaths occur. In contrast, about 25-30% of lung cancers in the US are squamous cell carcinoma. According to cancer.org, there will be about 225,000 new cases of lung cancer in 2019 and about 140,000 deaths.

Mohs surgery for squamous cell carcinoma of the skin offers a higher than 99% cure rate for small squamous cell carcinomas. Often, the squamous cell carcinomas of the skin that result in death are either long-neglected and allowed to grow or occur in an immunocompromised patient such as a transplant patient who may have an SCC grow so quickly that it is able to spread before it is eliminated.

Q: Are there other treatments besides Mohs surgery for squamous cell of the skin?

A: Yes, for a shallow SCC called “squamous cell carcinoma in situ”, patient may often choose between Mohs surgery, a wide excision and even topical creams.

Invasive squamous cell carcinoma is often best treated with either surgery or radiation. If an SCC has already spread, a multidisciplinary approach including chemotherapy and/or radiation may be necessary and will require the assistance of an oncologist.

Check your eligibility Depending on your filing status and income level, you may qualify for a nonrefundable credit of up to $1,000 (or $2,000 if filing jointly) on your federal income taxes for that year when you contribute to a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) or similar retirement plan, or IRA. To be eligible, the maximum Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for single filers is $31,500 in 2018 and $32,000 in 2019.

For the head of a household, the AGI maximum is $47,250 in 2018 and $48,000 in 2019. For those who are married and file a joint return, the AGI maximum is $63,000 in 2018 and $64,000 in 2019.

You must be 18 years or older by February 1 and cannot be a full-time student or be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return.

2. Save for retirement Save for retirement in your employer’s retirement plan, if offered, or in an IRA. In general, for every dollar you contribute to a qualified retirement plan or IRA (up to the lesser of the limits permitted by an employer-sponsored plan or the IRS),

you defer that amount from your current overall taxable income on your federal tax returns—and you may also qualify for the Saver’s Credit. After-tax contributions, such as those made to a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k), are also eligible for the credit. You have until April 15, 2019 to make a contribution to an IRA for tax year 2018.

3. File your tax return and claim the credit When you prepare your federal tax returns, you can claim your Saver’s Credit by subtracting this tax credit from your federal income taxes owed.

Workers who are eligible to claim the Saver’s Credit are also eligible to take advantage of the IRS Free File program for taxpayers with an AGI of $66,000 or less. Twelve commercial software companies make their tax preparation software available through the Free File program at www.irs.gov/FreeFile.

Mardi Gras Ball to benefit two local nonprofits

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Voila Foundation’s fourth annual Roswell Mardi Gras Ball will take on an Italian flare this year and will benefit two local organizations aimed at inclusivity for all.

For the second straight year, the event will benefit Children’s Charities, a nonprofit serving North Fulton and Forsyth County. The volunteer organization focuses on children with special needs and is currently funding an all-inclusive playground for children of all physical abilities which will be constructed in Milton.

The ball will also benefit the Kyle Pease Foundation, named after Kyle Pease who was born with cerebral palsy and competes with his brother, Brent, in athletic events including Ironman competitions and long-distance running races. The brothers became just the sec-

Roswell boys soccer capitalizes on Chattahoochee miscues

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — For 62 minutes, Roswell and Chattahoochee were deadlocked in a battle featuring strong defensive play and both squads bending without breaking. However, in the heavyweight battle, Roswell took advantage of two Chattahoochee errors to down the two-time defending Class 6A champions.

With 18 minutes remaining in the second half, a low Chattahoochee clearance was taken by Roswell’s Daniel Ramirez who stood alone 40-yards from the net. Cougars’ goalkeeper Joe Johnson was caught off his line and Ramirez sailed a shot over the keeper into the back of the net for his first career varsity goal.

Seven minutes later, Roswell used a heads up play to put their lead at 2-0 on an indirect free kick.

The Hornets were awarded the kick when Johnson fielded a pass from a teammate with his hands. CJ Ryan quickly placed the ball at the spot and passed to Christian Quintana who scored on the empty net.

“We were aware of our surroundings and we were able to take advantage of it,” Roswell head coach Gabriel Chapman said. “It really shows the game intelligence these guys have.”

Though Chattahoochee had two scoring chances in the final minutes, including an impressive run from Ryan Rigsbee which was thwarted by Hornet defenders, Roswell held on to become just the third team to shut out Hooch since 2016.

“I’m really proud of these guys,” Chapman said. “We played our game and our boys were really quick on the counter. What’s beautiful is that we were in the game the entire time.”

Chapman said beating the two-time defending state champions is “absolutely” a confidence boost.

“These boys know they are good, and today we proved we can hang with the best,” he said. “Everything is in front of us now.”

The Hornets looked poised to take an early lead when the ball careened inside the box and found CJ Ryan with a direct shot on an empty net. However, a Chattahoochee defender intercepted the shot and cleared the ball.

Ryan put another shot on goal minutes later with a high, sweeping shot, but Chattahoochee’s Holden Tracy made the save.

Chattahoochee had a prime offensive opportunity with Alek Ivanov slicing Roswell’s defense to go one-on-one with Roswell keeper Matthew Mullin, but Mullin made an impressive save to keep the game scoreless.

The Cougars came up empty on another chance after a deflection opened much of the net for a shot, but the Hornets’ Chase Foxman intercepted the shot and cleared.

Roswell used an impressive passing sequence in their offensive third to set up Emanuel Artega with a close, direct shot, but Johnson made a dive to his left to make the save. However, Roswell found the net four minutes later with Ramirez’s goal.

The Hornets (3-2) will begin region play against Cherokee on March 1.

Chattahoochee (3-1) kicks off its Region 7-AAAAAA slate against crosstown rival Johns Creek the same night.

Roswell girls soccer squad continues undefeated star

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — With nine returning starters from last year’s state quarterfinals squad and added depth, the Roswell girls are poised for another strong season. The Hornets showed their prowess by downing Chattahoochee 4-0 at home Friday night to kick off the season with a 5-0 record.

“We have big goals for this year,” said Roswell head coach Katie Snyder.

“They have come very close the past two seasons in winning big games, and I feel like this is the season they finally get over the hump. A lot of members of this same group were here for the sweet 16 in 2017 and last year in the elite eight.

They are hungry and ready for more this season. I believe that these girls are good enough to win it all.”

The Hornets returned their entire backline of Grace MacDonald, Kate Archambault, Kaylee Barckhoff and Abby Consoer from last season. Snyder said the defensive back has made a significant difference so far this season.

Along with the defensive core, Snyder said midfielders Elise Baron and Caroline Claveau have been crucial.

Roswell dominated possession and held Chattahoochee’s attack at bay throughout Friday’s contest, including from Hayden Hammerman who intercepted a bevy of the Cougars’ passes.

While a hard, cold rain wreaked havoc on the playing surface late in the first half, Snyder said her squad was not settled in the first frame. However, the Hornets took a 1-0 lead into the break after Mairead Clark netted her first varsity goal with a shot inside the box with 11 minutes left in the half.

“We had some poor decision-making, but we were able to sort it out and take some better chances on goal in the second half,” Snyder said.

After ringing shots off the crossbar and the left post in the first half, Mallie McKenzie broke through for the first of her two goals four minutes into the second frame. The senior found the back of the net again 15 minutes later with a shot to the lower left corner.

Despite some impressive saves from Chattahoochee goalkeeper Gabriella Graham, the Hornets added their fourth goal midway through the second half. A ball loose in the back deflected out in a scrum of players to the awaiting right foot of Meghan Connelly who scored.

“It’s going to be just as competitive this year,” Snyder said. “We know Walton and Lassiter are going to be great games, but we can’t count out any other team in this region.”

Snyder said the focus heading into region play is putting together the identity of the 2019 squad, which should include confidence.

“Like any team, this is really the time to cement who we are,” Snyder said.

“To lose to Milton last year (in the state quarterfinals) on penalty kicks, they’re not going to forget that. But I hope if we are in that situation again we play more confidently and put those balls in the back of the net.”

Seven local wrestlers capture state championships

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MACON, Ga. — Dozens of wrestlers from North Fulton and Forsyth County schools competed in the GHSA traditional wrestling state championships Feb. 13-16 and seven won state titles in their respective weight classes.

Two local wrestlers, Blessed Trinity’s Vincent Baker and Cambridge’s Gavin Kane, won their third state titles.

Baker won the Class 4A 182-lb. title by a technical fall to complete a 41-0 record in GHSA competition. Kane completed a 46-0 run and won the Class 6A 160-lb. championship by fall.

Mount Pisgah’s David Bertrand was the top qualifier and earned the 160-lb. state title in Class A with a 2-1 decision.

Milton sophomore Ben Williams earned a 13-1 major decision to capture the Class 7A 132-lb. title. Also in Class 7A, North Forsyth’s Paul Watkins took the 145-lb. championship.

This year’s state meet was the first to field girls brackets, and North Forsyth’s Sophie Egilan became the first local girls state champion by capturing the top spot on the podium in the 146-lb. class.

Fellow Forsyth County wrestler Mark Metz of Pinecrest Academy secured the state Class-A 106-lb. championship.

In addition to seven state champions, 32 North Fulton and Forsyth County competitors earned top-six finishes to place on the podium.

In Class A competition, Mount Pisgah placed three wrestlers on the podium.

Josh Noble placed third in the 106-lb. class, Catherine Grace Bertrand was fourth in the 113-lb. bracket and Noah Swift placed fifth in 182-lb. competition.

Saint Francis’ Troy Beasley and Andrew Whitesides stood on the podium in their respective classes. Whitesides finished sixth in the 195-lb. class and Beasley captured fifth by fall in the 285lb. class.

Joe Metz of Pinecrest Academy placed fourth in the 145-lb. bracket.

Blessed Trinity placed fourth in Class 4A in team scores, led by Baker’s state title and six total podium placements.

Gunner and Jackson Filipowicz each placed as state runner up. Gunner lost a 13-8 decision in the finals match of the 132-lb. class and Jackson earned second in the 220-lb. class, dropping an 8-2 decision in the finals.

Patrick Riordan placed fourth in the 126-lb. bracket, Alex Poma was fourth in the 160-lb. class and Kevin Daniels won the 120-lb. fifth-place match by fall.

Cambridge’s Kyle Romano placed second in the 132-lb. bracket, falling short of the state title by a 12-4 major decision.

Also representing Cambridge, Connor McHugh placed fifth in the 182-lb. class and Evan Kurtz (170-lb.) was sixth.

Centennial’s Josh Siegel placed as state runner-up in the 138-lb. bracket.

Thomas Isaiah earned fifth in the 152 lb. class and Leroy Macon lost a 1-0 decision to Cambridge’s McHugh to place sixth in the 182-lb. bracket.

Chattahoochee was led by a thirdplace finish by Daniel Gladwell in the 182-lb. bracket. Fellow Cougar Stephens Marcus placed fourth in the 170-lb. class.

In Class 7A competition, Forsyth Central placed five wrestlers on the podium.

Steven Messer claimed fifth in the 113-lb. class with a 12-0 major decision, Abraham Perez was fourth in the 120-lb. bracket, and Mikel Stowers and Keaton Placed fifth in the 132- and 195lb. classes. Central’s Ashlee Rice placed sixth in the girls 106-lb. bracket.

West Forsyth’s Hailey Patrick placed fifth in the 176-lb. girls bracket.

Also from West, Dylan Fairchild placed fourth in the 285-lb. bracket, Ethan Rickert placed fourth (145-lb.) and Creston Lorenzo placed fifth in the 170-lb. bracket.

AJ Riner led South Forsyth with a third-place finish in the 126-lb. class with Trevor Patrick placing sixth (220-lb.).

North Forsyth’s Tate Bissel was fifth in the 138-lb. class and Roswell’s David Cartier was third in the 132-lb. class.

Blessed Trinity swimmer finds stride in water ROSWELL, Ga. — With more than 40 state team championship banners hanging in its gym, Blessed Trinity has proven to be one of Georgia’s top athletic programs over the past 20 years. But it was not until senior Dillon Downing stood atop the podium twice at the GHSA Swim and Dive State Championships Feb. 9 that the school captured its first boys swimming individual state title.

Downing raced his way to the title in 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle and set the fastest times of all classifications in both events. His time of 19.73 seconds in the 50-yard event was just 0.1 second behind the state record and was the 38th-quickest time nationally for high school swimmers, according to USA Swimming.

Even more impressive, Downing has only been swimming full time for two years.

Downing swam during elementary school but said he did not enjoy it and quit. While running cross country with the Titans his freshman year, he decided to give swimming another try that winter.

“Dillon was a very good swimmer his freshman year, but in his sophomore year, he had some tremendous time drops and placed fourth at the state meet in the 50-free and sixth in the 100free,” BT swim coach Chuck Oliver said.

“He beat many swimmers who are training year round and were getting looks from colleges. To be swimming the times he was while only committed to swimming for a few months out of the year showed me how much upside potential he probably had.”

Oliver suggested a year-round regimen, and Downing took the dive, splitting his time with coach Andy Griffin at Swim Atlanta and Oliver with BT. “I was definitely weaker than I wanted to be going from cross-country, but the endurance aspect helped a lot,” Downing said. “I was able to put in laps and not feel so drained. And since, my start and turns have gotten much better.”

While his cross country days saw Downing competing over long distances, he was drawn to the sprint races of the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events.

“I like how fast it is,” he said. “It focuses on strength. The other strokes require a lot of technique, and freestyle does as well, but it’s a lot of strength.”

with me and watching me progress,” Downing said. “Obviously the work they put in to help me get better paid off.”

Downing not only caught the eyes of his coaches and competitors, he impressed college recruiters. The new state champion accepted a scholarship offer from UGA where he will continue his swim and academic career.

“Honestly, the whole process was a surprise for me since I only recently started to swim,” Downing said. “I didn’t expect to be recruited.”

Downing said he is excited for the opportunity to join the Bulldogs and believes he will be able to contribute to the sprint program as a freshman.

“I feel like UGA is getting a diamond in the rough as Dillon’s upside is just now beginning to scratch the surface,” Oliver said. “Dillon’s body is in great shape, and mentally he is hungry. I expect him to add strength in college as his body can handle it. I fully expect to see Dillon in the 2024 Olympics if not the 2020 Olympics.”

Downing has set high goals for himself at UGA, where he aims to set the school record in the 50-yard freestyle and earn a spot in the NCAA finals.

“I’m still fairly new, and I want to see how far I can go,” he said.

Remember the world of Anne Frank March 5

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A multi-media performance depicting the hidden children of the Holocaust is coming to Roswell.

“And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank” will play on Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Ensemble Theatre on 950 Forrest St. in Roswell. The play follows two childhood friends of Anne Frank, Eva Schloss and Ed Silverberg, who recount their authentic stories of survival in video interviews while professional actors portray them as teenagers on stage. The production has been presented annually for 22 consecutive years by the Georgia Ensemble Theatre.

One of the most striking parts of the show is its level of intimacy with the audience, said director Erin Bushko Smith.

“After each performance, we have a talkback with the audience — a chance to ask questions, share stories and learn together,” Smith said. “That personal time is very revealing. We have had audience members share their own story of survival. They feel it is a safe and appropriate place to finally speak. Eva’s story is incredible. She is still an incredible woman, travelling the world to share her life and experience. That gives people strength and hope and courage.”

The play travels between several different locations and settings, including a large theatre, classroom, gymnasium and library corner. Video interviews with Schloss and Silverberg play interspersed throughout the story.

“For me, being able to see how they still react to remembering those experiences is life changing,” Smith said. “The things that were painful, things that brought them joy — it is a true human moment. These were and are real people who actually lived through these events. History brought to life through the survivors. It’s incredible.”

Several historical photos are also used throughout the performance to set scenes.

“Much of the show is about moving or being moved quickly,” Smith said. “I feel like the videos and photos help relate that very well.”

The play is also taken on tour to several local schools and is generally geared toward middle school students. The team connects with teachers, principals and parents to find ways to integrate the material into what students are already learning about the time period, Smith said.

“This way, they are hearing the material from many different perspectives in many different ways,” Smith said. “We hope this helps to engage the children, whatever their learning style.”

For many of the children, and even some teachers and parents, “And Then They Came for Me” is one of the first times they’ve interacted with any sort of Holocaust story in depth, Smith said.

“This might be their first exposure to any type of theatrical experience, or even their first exposure to the Holocaust and the personal stories of survival,” he added. “We are honored to be that part of their life…

I hope that building a generation of kids who cares, starting at an early age, one-on-one with each other, they will grow into adults who can treat the world in the same way.”

Roswell High Drama receives several awards ROSWELL — The Roswell High School Drama program has recently received multiple accolades.

The Roswell Fine Arts Drama Troupe was invited to perform at the 2019 Georgia Thespian Conference in Columbus from Feb. 8-9 after winning Region Four, 7a One-Act Play and coming in fourth place in State through the Georgia High School Association.
