Roswell finalizes Big Creek Parkway alignment plans By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com
Partnership with GDOT Also at the Sept. 9 meeting, the Roswell City Council unanimously agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding with GDOT for improvements at the Holcomb Bridge Road and Ga. 400 interchange. The agreement, which includes upgrades to increase traffic flow on Holcomb Bridge, became possible thanks to a redesign of the original Big Creek Parkway alignment plans that saved the city $12 million. As outlined in the memorandum, the City of Roswell will contribute $15 million, or 40 percent, to the improvement project. GDOT will be responsible for the remaining 60 percent, or $23 million, of project costs. The city will also provide bridge aesthetic plans for the project by the end of 2019 and will pay all costs for the bridge aesthetics on top of the $15 million.
ROSWELL, Ga. — After months of consideration, Roswell has nailed down plans for the final leg of Big Creek Parkway. The proposed alignment, with a price tag of just over $44 million, is one of Roswell’s largest transportation projects to date and will create a new east-west connector over Ga. 400. Funding comes from the transportation sales tax passed by voters in 2016. The Roswell City Council unanimously approved the new alignment plans at its Sept. 9 meeting. Councilman Marcelo Zapata was not in attendance. Big Creek Parkway was proposed nearly 10 years ago as an alternative east-west route across Ga. 400 that would relieve pressure along Holcomb Bridge Road. Since then, the city has had to adjust to changing plans for Ga. 400 by the Georgia DOT, said Deputy Director of Roswell Transportation Rob Dell-Ross. Plans for Big Creek Parkway were initially set in two phases: Phase 1 to primarily widen Warsaw Road and add turn lanes, and Phase 2 to create a route from Warsaw Road east over Ga. 400 and then connecting to Holcomb Bridge Road. Phase 1 is already underway with construction set for spring.
The new Big Creek Parkway alignment includes Phase 1, in yellow, and Phase 2, the blue and green lines, along with potential future upgrades and connection, depicted in dashed lines.
An opportunity arises Earlier this year, the city approached GDOT about a potential partnership —including funding — to redesign and replace the interchange at Holcomb Bridge Road and Ga. 400 as part of the state’s new express lane project on Ga. 400. The interchange redesign incorporates new measures to improve traffic on Holcomb Bridge through the area.
GDOT’s express lane project is moving forward at a fast pace, and state officials asked Roswell to come to a decision by Sept. 9, Mayor Lori Henry said. To free up money for the partnership, Roswell devised a plan that could save millions on Big Creek Parkway. Those savings would then be funneled into the interchange project with GDOT. It all hinged on a redesign of Big

Creek Parkway. What the city has decided on is a plan that modifies the original design with a longer, less-direct route from Warsaw Road, east over Ga. 400, to Old Alabama Road. The route would still support about the same amount of traffic as the earlier plan, and is estimated to save the city $12 million. Those savings can now go to support the interchange collaboration. The modified Big Creek Parkway route, approved Sept. 9, would also reduce wetland impact and residential displacement. More importantly, the revised plan also includes a project to connect Warsaw Road to Old Holcomb Bridge Road. That spur comes with a $5 million price tag, most of it for property acquisition. Dell-Ross said the department is actively seeking grants to reduce costs to the city. Henry reported that GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry said he was committed and confident he can help Roswell find funding for the Warsaw connection. “We do have other funding opportunities for Warsaw Road,” she said. “The state of Georgia has been a very, very good partner in this project.” The City Council vote combined what had been Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the same project. Dell-Ross said work on Phase 2 is already underway. Hausmann praises vote Fulton County Commissioner
Liz Hausmann, who represents East Roswell, thanked the City Council for considering the alignment changes and urged the city to pass it. “This is an important, generational decision that affects not only Roswell but the entire region,” she said. While some citizens agreed, others were not happy with the plans. Keith Goeke, along with other residents, said the new plans will break citizens’ trust of their city because they vary too much from the plans presented to voters in the sales tax referendum. “You encouraged citizen action and engagement,” Goeke said. “The citizens voted for the original project, but somehow, you’ve chosen not to listen to them in that regard and change the focus of the project. How does that foster or promote citizen engagement?... What happens the next time you put a project in front of the citizens to vote on, but they have no confidence that you’ll even listen?” Other residents criticized the longer, less-direct path of the new alignment. The mayor responded that the scope of the project has always been to relieve congestion on Holcomb Bridge Road. She said that while the path has been adjusted because of a new situation, the project still achieves that goal and saves money that could be used to work with GDOT to improve the Ga. 400 interchange. “In all honesty, I will tell you that it would be criminal for this council not to look at the new situation that we have on our hands,” Henry said. “That’s what we’ve been looking at. We’ve been working very hard with GDOT to come up with a solution.”

Task force makes 24 arrests on sex crime charges By DENISE RAY denise@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga.—Twenty-four people were arrested as a result of an undercover investigation coordinated by local authorities. “Operation Just Cause” was a four-day operation directed by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office High Technology Crime unit that began Sept. 5 and resulted in the arrest of 23 men and 1 woman on sex crimes including computer or electronic pornography and human trafficking. Two of the individuals were registered sex offenders. According to the sheriff’s office, additional charges may be forthcoming. “The goal of Operation Just Cause was to arrest persons who communicate with children online and then travel to meet them for the purpose of having sex,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said. “Additionally, the operation targeted those that are willing to exploit children by purchasing sex with a minor.” Thirteen additional law enforcement agencies participated in “Operation Just Cause” as members of the Georgia ICAC Task Force. The agencies assisting in the operation included: Johns CreekAlpharetta-Forsyth County Drug Task Force, Alpharetta Police Department,
Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Floyd County Police Department, GBI, GBI-Georgia Information Sharing and Analysis Center, Gwinnett County Police Department, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Johns Creek Police Department, Lilburn Police Department, Roswell Police Department and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Online child predators visit chat rooms and websites on the internet, find children, begin conversations with them, introduce sexual content and arrange a meeting with the children for the purpose of having sex. Over the course of the operation, a number of cases were established that met the threshold for arrest, and 24 resulted in arrests. Those arrested ranged in age from 19 to 65, traveled from areas around north Georgia and other states with the alleged intent to meet a child for sex, officials said. One of the individuals that was arrested was in possession of suspected illegal drugs. Thirty-one mobile phones were seized as evidence during the operation. One person identified in the operation was a current state prisoner in the Department of Corrections system using an illegally possessed phone smuggled inside the prison, according to the statement.
During the multi-day operation, investigators had numerous exchanges with subjects on various social media or internet platforms. In many of the interactions, the subject initiated contact with someone whom they believed to be a minor (but who was actually an undercover agent) and directed the conversation toward sex. In some of those cases, the subject introduced obscene or lewd content, often exposing the “minor” to pornography or requesting the child take nude or pornographic images for them. Although some websites promote themselves as being for “adults-only” it is not uncommon for law enforcement to work cases in which children access these sites, establish profiles claiming to be older, and then find themselves vulnerable to victimization. Several subjects were identified as communicating simultaneously with multiple investigators posing as minors, according to the sheriff’s report. The suspects arrested and charged in Forsyth County were: Robert Harley Martin, 38, Dahlonega; Erik Delgado, 26, Gainesville, Ga.; Alan Thomas Bryant, 40, Murrayville, Ga; Kyle Alexander Williams, 32, Stone Mountain; Roger Kyle Nicholson; 44, Gainesville, Ga.; Jacob Perry Yeamans, 61, Madison, Wisc.; Rene Mauricio Posada; 29; Marietta; Jackson Cain Butler, 20, Calhoun,
Ga.; John Andrew Odell, 40, Cumming; Michael Keith Coker, 29, Augusta State Prison; Richard Edward Hazelwood, 49, Roswell, Ga.; Johnathon Dale Butler, 25, Palmall, Tenn.; Mackenzi Faye Stinson, 19, Palmall, Tenn., Mahesh Kumar Saroj, 35, Alpharetta; Christopher Scott Taylor, 29, Cumming; Joseph Ryan Lisnock, 22, Gainesville, Ga.; Dylan Blair Nessmith, 23, Johns Creek; Austin Wayne Rhodes, 22, Alpharetta; Daniel Dennis Rogan, 47, Witchita, Kan.; Jason Lee McIntyre, 35, Gainesville, Ga,; Gavin Austen Peppers, 21, Bowman, Ga; Jimmy Webster Roy, 21, Gainesville, Ga.; Anthony Christian Ceja, 23, Lawrenceville; Steven Charles Vinnenberg, 65, Cumming. The Georgia ICAC Task Force is comprised of over 230 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, other related criminal justice agencies and prosecutor’s offices. The mission of the ICAC Task Force, created by the U. S. Department of Justice and managed and operated by the GBI in Georgia, is to assist state and local law enforcement agencies in developing an effective response to cyber enticement and child pornography cases. This support encompasses forensic and investigative components, training and technical assistance, victim services, prevention and community education.

Roswell approves new Hill Street apartments By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A new development, directly across from City Hall, promises to be Roswell’s densest apartments-peracre project. The Roswell City Council voted 3-1, with Councilman Mike Palermo opposed, to approve conditional use for a new multi-family development at 25 Hill St., on the corner with Ga. 9. Current businesses at the site include Kell’s Furniture Restoration, Hicks Automotive and Expedite Passport Experts. Councilman Marcelo Zapata was not at the meeting. The item had been deferred twice, at the June 10 and Aug. 12 City Council meetings, to determine how the development would fit in with new information about the city’s developing Historic District Master Plan. During that time, the applicant made some changes to the project to meet requirements. According to Planning and Zoning Director Jackie Deibel, the applicant successfully altered the development so it would fit within the North Alpharetta/ Atlanta Street character area as outlined in the master plan.
The proposed development includes 96 units — 47 one-bedroom units and 49 two-bedroom units — and nearly 10,100 square feet of commercial space. The project is vertically integrated, with commercial at the bottom and residential at the top, and with a maximum height of four stories. It was approved with 11 conditions recommended by staff. The conditions include inter-parcel connectivity, coordination with GDOT for intersection improvements, and additional roadway and pedestrian street lighting if a lighting analysis deems it necessary. The number of units in the development is not guaranteed, thanks to a condition passed by the City Council. The applicant may lose units based on compliance with staff and Historic Preservation Commission requirements. Ed Tate, representing the applicant ADM Realty Partners, said the project will improve walkability in the area and provide housing for young adults as well as aging populations. “If you want to reduce the number of cars in your Historic District, you have to let people live where they can walk,” he said. While the City Council was favorable
to the most recent changes to the project, Palermo questioned why the city should approve a development with recordbreaking apartment-per-acre density. That question was at the core of several comments made my residents, who were likewise concerned about the project’s density. They said that it could set a dangerous precedent for other developments. Other residents urged the City Council to vote for the project to add more business, life and growth to the area. Councilman Matt Judy applauded the applicant’s redesign for meeting and exceeding requirements, codified and non-codified, by the city as well as addressing residents’ concerns that the development would become a second version of the controversial Vickers apartments on the corner of Canton Street and Woodstock Road. “This is not Vickers,” he said. “This sits on a state highway. It does not abut a residential neighborhood. It’s vertically integrated already… How many more bars can we set?” Judy added that excessive conditions would make Roswell look unattractive for people looking to live or do business in the city.
Palermo noted that several people had commented at the meeting that the project was not perfect but should be accepted to avoid scaring off other developers. “Roswell should not be settling,” he said. “What leads us to settle is when people make it out to be black or white, that someone is for development or against development. That’s not really what’s going on in the community… It’s not either we have to say ‘yes’ to a record-breaking amount of apartments, or we have to say ‘no’ to all development.” Palermo added that precedent does matter and that before this development, Vickers was the densest residential development in the city. “Now, we’re almost about to beat that by double the amount,” he said. “That’s not something that is good for the longterm planning of our city.” He proposed to approve the development with all staff recommendations, but he added a condition that the residential density not exceed 32 units per acre. His motion failed for lack of a second. Judy said that from a legal perspective, this decision would not create a precedent.

Community Conversation focuses on suicide prevention By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Suicide is a difficult topic to discuss, but it is absolutely necessary to have the conversation. That was the emphasis of “Suicide: A Community Conversation” held at Milton City Hall on Sept. 10, where a panel of experts tackled the issue of suicide before a packed room of adults and teens. The event was put on by the city and Summit Counseling. Though the popular belief still remains that discussing suicide can lead to people taking their lives, the panel stressed the importance of breaking that stigma. “If Milton is to be the best place to call home, we have to be able to discuss difficult topics like suicide,” Mayor Joe Lockwood said. “Talking is the first step toward prevention.” The same message was shared by Lauralyn Mustaki and Britt Beene, who both lost teens to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death for teens according to the CDC. Mustaki’s daughter, Ivey, took her own life in March 2018 at the age of 18. Beene’s son, Reagan, took his life in 2013 while a freshman at Cambridge High School. Each parent shared their stories, and they highlighted the differences that can lead to a teen choosing to take their own life, whether it is due to a longstanding trauma or a reaction to a distressing occurrence. While there is not a catch-all for suicide prevention, the panel did discuss signs that can serve as possible warning signals. Megan Barfield, a therapist at Summit Counseling, said parents should be on the lookout for a disconnection by their son or daughter, or if their teen feels they are a burden on their family. Teens should also be mindful of changes to their friend’s behavior. “If you see a friend who is acting different, or maybe you are just worried about them or they said something that is worrying to you, acknowledge that you hear it and that you are there for them by caring for them, and then tell someone,” Barfield said. Ron Magat of Summit Counseling said kids and teens do not have the same maturity that adults might place on them, and parents should not dismiss the stress or trauma they may be experiencing. It is also vital parents take seriously any language that suggest self-harm. “What I see a lot in my office is parents coming in and saying [their kids] just want attention or they are saying that to give their cell phone back…that’s
Though the popular belief still remains that discussing suicide can lead to people taking their lives, the panel stressed the importance of breaking that stigma. a very dangerous precedent to have,” Magat said. Chelsea Montgomery, Fulton County Schools executive director of counseling, psychological and social work services, said schools take any such comments seriously. She added that teens can take advantage of the Text 4 Help program, which connects students with a licensed physician through text, and parents or friends can use an anonymous tip line if they have concerns about a student. The school system also has mental health partners trained in suicide prevention. Fulton County Medical Examiner Jan Gorniak also spoke on the panel after recently completing a study on suicide myths. She said major myths include that most people who take their own lives do so by purposeful overdose. Most suicides, she said, involve a firearm. She also said that suicide is not exclusive to those with depression, or that suicide rates increase around the holidays. Kids can also take their own life, Gorniak said. She once had a case in which an 8-year old had died by suicide. Beene also shared how people can help others who have been traumatized by suicide, even when it may feel difficult to do so. “Don’t be strong for me, cry,” Beene said. “I can’t tell you the overwhelming peace it brought me to see all the people coming and crying for me. It was a true, honest, genuine thing. I felt they were trying to take some of my pain away from me.” Sean Curry of Stonecreek Church said it is okay to acknowledge how heartbreaking suicide is, and people should “lean in” instead of pulling away from someone who has been impacted by suicide. “I think we need to be people who can laugh with them, cry with them, hurt with them, hug them and be there for them,” he said. “Suicide: A Community Conversation” is archived on Milton’s website and can be viewed any time.

Final papers signed to begin Eastside Community Center By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Residents on Alpharetta’s east side should soon begin seeing signs of an amenity they’ve waited years to enjoy. The City Council signed an agreement with the Ed Isakson YMCA on Sept. 9 to form a partnership in construction of a $3.1 million community center. It will be the city’s first indoor activity center east of Ga. 400. Plans call for converting the existing teen center into a community activity, wellness, summer camp, program and meeting space by adding a second floor to the facility. There are no plans to increase the height of the building but merely to install
a second floor to the existing structure. Overall, the project will add five community spaces to the existing building. Construction is set to begin this month, and completion is scheduled for May 2020. Under terms of the agreement, the city will provide $2.5 million in funding for the project. That funding was made available through a bond referendum passed by voters in 2016. Earlier this year, the city amended its agreement with the YMCA to establish a collaboration between that organization and the city’s director of Parks and Recreation to develop and schedule community activities at the facility. Morgan Rodgers, director of Parks and Recreation for the city, said the city

A seniors advisory committee will be formed to assist in selecting suitable activities, he said. “The programming for these spaces will be based on mutual understanding of the community needs, and we’re going to work collaboratively with the YMCA to program that space,” Rodgers said. “There will be no overlapping or competing programs.” City Council members said they were pleased to see the project launched, but they want to ensure the city’s interests will be recognized when program scheduling is drawn up. Councilman Donald Mitchell said the project spans two city councils, and he wants to guarantee that the community center will be used for the greater Alpharetta community. “We’re spending $2.5 million,” he said. “I think it’s important that we have
something in writing that assures us of future [use].” Rodgers said the city’s revised agreement with the YMCA, adopted in January, spells out specifically how the collaboration will work for the Eastside Community Center. He said the document was drawn up in collaboration with the YMCA governing board and the Alpharetta Recreation Commission. “It was a well-thought-through document,” Rodgers said. In a related matter at the Sept. 9 meeting, the City Council unanimously approved a design plan for Mid Broadwell Park. The 4.1-acre park was added to the city’s park’s inventory recently as part of the $52 million bond passed by voters in 2016. Plans call for a small parking lot, a restroom, small picnic area, kids nature play area, open space and trails. The woodland area that currently takes up a large portion of the park, will remain.

In The Interest Of Others
Good intentions are not good deeds By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor After Hiroshima, it was said: “The world now accepts the miracle of the chain reaction that creates an atomic explosion; but we still refuse to accept the Chadwick miracles of the human heart - and the chain reactions that are made possible by using that power.” I believe this is still true. We greatly underestimate the power of GOOD. But nowhere is the evidence more undeniable than the 75-year legacy of Heifer International. How did it begin? In 1938, at the end of the Spanish Civil War, a relief worker, Dan West, started his movement “Not a cup – but a cow!” His real success came from the understanding that hope is not a strategy, and people must unify to create abundance instead of competing for limited resources. Once individuals achieve success, they never choose the insecurity of the past. This creates a common language of change that permeates a region and stabilizes it. In South Korea, for example, the Korean Ministry of Agriculture estimates that 50 percent of all poultry in South Korea today are descended from 70,000 hatchlings supplied by Heifer after the Korean War. In Cambodia, Heifer has spread to half of the country, partnering not just to provide livestock but guidance and encouragement through their “cornerstones.” This new doctrine empowers women greatly. The farm-to-market project has found that alcoholism, domestic violence and disability can no longer hold back the women there. Given a few seeds, a piglet or some business training, a powerhouse network of matriarchs is building a decidedly better future

for their families as well as creating a healthy local food system. The majority of my own philanthropic efforts are intentionally domestic; intended to alter the opportunities of the less fortunate in America. But, I believe that the most enduring way to influence peace in the world is by fostering true Independence here — and abroad. Heifer has a unique payit-forward “contract” that puts all local participants in the position of bringing their own neighbors out of poverty. If the local program is to raise say....chickens, the first hatchlings born to a member are given to a neighbor, then his first to a neighbor, and so on. This is done in a very public ceremony. All recipients then enter into training together which
fosters real friendships as well as the unanimous application of best veterinary practices. This new interdependence continues without any U.S. involvement stabilizing locations experiencing desperate circumstances that could otherwise grow into social chaos and the need for people to migrate to survive. When the llama population in Peru was declining seriously due to overbreeding, Heifer helped introduce a new breeding stock able to thrive on indigenous vegetation. This practice completely revitalized herds to full vigor in less than 5 years. Without llamas, life in Peru is not sustainable for at least 40 percent of the population. It has been proven that a rapidly expanding prosperity model eventually

yields local funding for schools, homes, medical care and expanded sustainable feeding projects. What has quietly been accomplished in the 75 years Heifer has operated is nothing short of spectacular! Starting with community groups of 25, the work now reaches into the many thousands. My favorite example is of a Kenyan community where Heifer came in to help boost milk yields to the dairy farmers. This community ended up creating a co-op producing butter to sell to local markets and hotels. As a result of that success, education has really taken off, and the first medical doctor has risen from a community where 25 years ago no one could read. Ranjana Shrestha, another project participant, has risen to become an officially elected member of the parliament in Nepal. In 2002, Heifer celebrated the “passing on the gift” ceremony of their 3 millionth animal. When people anywhere are given an opportunity to learn and put that education into practice, transformation takes place. Small scale farmers can feed the world and build stronger communities in a way that is permanent. Heifer’s value-based leadership mentors and inspires to dramatically impact every area of life when they enter a region. My interest in their work has continued to grow through my life and has affected my understanding of what is truly possible in the future of our small planet.

Roswell remembers fallen on 9/11 Speaker encourages community volunteering By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Sept. 11, 2001 started off just like any other day. “On 9/11, more than 2,000 people woke up and said, ‘I’m going to go to work today,’” said Col. Mark D. Gelhardt. “Those 2,000 plus individuals started a day just like today 18 years ago and never finished.” Gelhardt was this year’s speaker at Roswell’s annual 9/11 ceremony, held each year at the Mike Gann 9-11 Memorial at Roswell Area Park by the City of Roswell and Roswell Rotary Club. Dozens of people gathered at the memorial for Claude Michael Gann, a Roswell resident who lost his life during the Sept. 11 attacks, to honor and remember the lives lost during the 9/11 attacks. “It feels impossible to watch the killing of 2,974 people and more than 400 first responders and not somehow be changed,” said Roswell Mayor Lori Henry. “We all experienced the horror and grief as we watched our fellow Americans perish and our freedom challenged.” Gelhardt, retired army officer with 22 years of active commissioned service and now volunteer firefighter, said that the ceremony was held not to dwell on the deaths but to recognize the individuals who died and who served. He reminded everyone that in the hours and days after the initial attacks, volunteers came together and helped one another to make their community better. Volunteers, he said, are often the first ones on the ground after a natural disaster like a hurricane. And volunteers can continue to improve their communities every day. “You can help in your community by volunteering, by providing service,” Gelhardt said. “What are you going to do today that will make today better for you, your family and your neighbors? What are you going to do tomorrow to make that day better? How are you going to use the life that you have to improve you community, your society?” The high school students that will graduate this year, 18 years after 9/11, were not even alive during the attacks, Gelhardt said. “They are learning about the World Trade Center and Pentagon through history books,” he said. “I would challenge you and ask you to think about teaching our children what our real life means and what it costs.” He additionally encouraged people to teach the younger generations about

that history along with service, volunteerism and patriotism. “You have a precious life,” Gelhardt said. “Use it to provide service and volunteer to do something that is for someone other than yourself or your family. Help others, and we will all grow stronger.”

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The Chattahoochee River is one of Roswell’s beloved assets, and soon, local volunteers will spend an afternoon tending to its health and cleanliness. On Sept. 28, Keep Roswell Beautiful will host its annual Rivers Alive Cleanup. The tradition was started statewide by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources back in 1993 to clean litter in and around Georgia’s rivers. Roswell’s event will focus specifically on the roads and trails surrounding the downtown Roswell area as well as removing litter in the Chattahoochee River. In addition to litter cleanup, volunteers will be removing the invasive privet shrub from Riverside Park. “We aim to create awareness of our local water resources and instill a sense of community pride by coming together to
CITY OF ROSWELL/Special
Volunteers annually clean the Chattahoochee River area during the statewide Rivers Alive Cleanup event. keep our natural environment clean and beautiful,” said Environmental Education Coordinator and Keep Roswell Beautiful Executive Director Vicki Culbreth. The benefits of keeping Roswell’s rivers and water sources are numerous, she said. The Chattahoochee River and Big Creek are the sources of our drinking water, so it’s definitely in our best interest to keep them healthy and clean,” Culbreth said. “Plus, here in Roswell, we love using our streams and rivers for recreation. Year-round, you see people boating, paddle boarding, swimming and
fishing. Clean water is a major component of human health as well as the health of the local flora and fauna.” Storm water pollution, when rainwater washes pollutants into waterways, is especially prevalent in suburban cities like Roswell, Culbreth said. She added that some of the most common pollutants include dog waste, which can cause bacteria spikes; fertilizers, which can cause algae blooms and decreased oxygen; pesticides, which can harm aquatic animals; and litter, which can harm wildlife and is often an eyesore.
Cleanup, however, can help to reduce such damage. Last year, more than 150 volunteers helped with cleanup efforts, and organizers are hoping to pull in even more this year. This year’s cleanup starts at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Riverside Park, 575 Riverside Road, Roswell. Volunteers can help with road cleanup, storm drain marking and privet pulling. Those interested in waterway cleanup should bring their own watercraft. People of all ages can volunteer in the road cleanup, but there are some age restrictions for other activities. Although the Rivers Alive Cleanup is once a year, citizens can take small steps to help keep rivers clean yearround. Culbreth outlined some options. “We should remember that anything we put on the ground will likely end up on the river at some point,” she said. “We encourage people to apply only the minimum amount of fertilizers and pesticides in their yards and carefully read instructions before doing so. Picking up after your pets, even in your own yard, is crucial. Keep your vehicles in good repair, so they aren’t leaking motor oil or other chemicals. And perhaps the most obvious solution is don’t litter.” People can sign up to volunteer for the 2019 Rivers Alive Cleanup and sign waivers online at roswellgov.com. The registration deadline is Sept. 20.

Household incomes show no growth in 2018 A recent article in the Wall Street Journal kind of shocked me when it stated that American incomes remained essentially flat in 2018. Our unemployment rate is at a historically low level, and Geoff smith as employers fight for Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com quality employees, it should make good sense that wages would be going up. But they are not. The median household income was $63,179, according to the article. That’s up only 0.9 percent over the prior year. It’s hard to swallow, because the unemployment rate has hovered at or below 4 percent, which economists figure is what they would consider full-pool. This means everyone who wants a job, has one. With unemployment so low, early last year economists were concerned with how our economy was going to grow. If there are no workers to add to your company, how can you produce more of your goods and services? Historically, when this happens, necessity becomes the mother of invention, and we’ve had advances in technology that have made our companies and our workers more productive. One worker is more able to produce more goods or services. In the late 1800s, the idea of assembly lines and using machinery to build things propelled how many units a worker could produce in a given day or hour. In the very late 1900s, computers and software enabled workers to organize and be incredibly more efficient, and businesses more organized. In just the last 15 years, smart phones have made all of us way more productive in some ways (and unproductive in other ways — monitoring your Facebook probably isn’t helping your company). The thing about smart phones is that you can essentially do everything that your computer can do from almost anywhere in the world. And for many, they
The median household income was $63,179, according to the article. That’s up only 0.9 percent over the prior year. have extended the work day as workers now carry about their computers with them in the evening and weekends. So when a new technology is invented and woven into the workforce, to increase production, companies tend to spend more on integrating that technology and less on increasing wages. Last year, according to Carl Tannenbaum, chief economist for Northern Trust, employers were faced with the prospect of having few workers to pull from, so instead focused on integrating better, existing technologies and improving efficiencies within their organizations and industries. From most accounts, employers are certainly working harder to attract employees away from other companies, and they’re spending more on making their work environment seem more attractive than their competitors. Around Atlanta, companies are happy to pay higher rents to be in offices that are located in more walkable neighborhoods with restaurants and shops close by. They are spending more making their offices more entertaining and hospitable and fun. A commercial realtor told me that employers are finding that the millennial workforce seems to be more attracted to companies that have more compatible work environments than they are to companies that offer higher wages. The conundrum in the housing market is that you have a situation where wage growth was relatively flat last year, but home values increased by over 5 percent. So while wages are staying the same, the cost of living is going up, and residents are having to put a larger percentage of their take-home earnings toward living expenses. This will mean less
money to go toward shopping, eating out, putting money toward savings, and more usage of credit cards and equity lines. According to a Bloomberg report, U.S. credit card debt closed out 2018 at a record $870 billion. Normally, if you believe in the free market always balancing itself out, you would expect to see fewer people going out and buying homes, which would slow the increase in home values. And eventually wage increases would outpace home values. But the issue here in Atlanta is that our economy is so hot, we are still creating over 60,000 jobs a year, and more than 80,000 people a year are moving here. So they’ll still be buying houses, if they can find any. I have no idea where we are headed. If I did, I’d be retired and traveling the world with my family and a very impressive entourage of happy helpers. The market will invent something to stave off this trend, or the problem will exacerbate and employers here will increase wages to get above the local trend, or nothing will be invented and employers will not do anything to increase wages and something else will happen. Either way, here we are. Geoff Smith is a mortgage banker with Assurance Financial focusing on residential home loans for refinances and home purchases. Would you buy your own business? Have you ever thought about selling your small business? A lot of small business owners fail to maximize the money they can make from their business when dick jones they sell it by Founder & President Jones Simply Sales not “staging” it well before they want to sell it. Staging in this context is synonymous with preparing in advance to get the most amount of money you can when you sell your business. A good question to ask yourself during this process is “would you buy your own business?” If you ask this question to yourself and the answer is “no,” then you most likely aren’t going to attract a lot of buyers. Conversely, if the answer is “yes,” then you probably are going to get a lot of buyers very interested in buying it and sell it for a top dollar price. Potential buyers want to know a lot about your business before making you an offer. Their list could include information about your customers, suppliers, employees, operations, financials, revenue, cash flow, expenses and many other things. How prepared are you to answer these questions in a positive way and back up the answers with data and examples? Keep in mind that if you would buy your own business, you’d probably make the decision on similar criteria and would want to know all the facts about everything you can. When selling your small business, put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. If you would buy your own business, you’re probably going to attract a lot of buyers and make a lot of money selling it.

Patient centered, state of the art women’s healthcare available in Alpharetta at Avalon, Johns Creek and Cumming With no time to be sick, in pain or have surgery, the providers of Modern OBGYN know that educating women with different options for surgery is important. Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim, Dr. Stacey Pereira, and Dr. Christy Kenkel understand that one way of helping women in this busy world is through minimally invasive surgical options via robotic surgery and in-office surgical procedures. “There are so many great options for women,” Dr. John Reyes said. “It’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times.” Minimally invasive robotic surgery allows the physicians at Modern OBGYN to operate through just a few small incisions. Featuring a high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist, da Vinci enables them to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control.

As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, husband and wife team Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes know some common issues that can be addressed with robotic surgery are hysterectomies, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain and heavy bleeding. Striving to do their best for the women in the community, Dr. John said, “It’s a blessing to be able to do minimally invasive and robotic surgeries on patients suffering from longstanding issues such as infertility from endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic adhesive disease.” Established in 2010, Modern OBGYN has three convenient office locations in Johns Creek, on the Northside Forsyth campus in Cumming, and their newest office location in Alpharetta at Avalon. Along with compassionate care for patients and their needed surgeries, Modern OBGYN strives to give expecting mothers the support they need by making sure that the mothers personally
know their provider. Modern OBGYN has a highly experienced team of Certified Nurse Midwives who work alongside each physician to provide well-rounded, patient-centered and personal obstetrical care. You’ll always know us, and we’ll always know you,” Dr. John said. “No surprises when it comes time to deliver!” Dr. John says the best part about building provider-patient relationships is, “We can help them become pregnant, and come full-circle to care for them during their pregnancy and delivery. It’s the full spectrum of caring for what’s so important to a woman’s life—her health and her family.” Modern OBGYN also provides routine annual exams, Pap smears, HPV testing, irregular cycles, menopause and other common women’s issues. The physicians perform robotic surgery at both Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. Alpharetta Business Association celebrates 25 years of serving local businesses Back in 1994, a group of downtown Alpharetta merchants banded together to promote their shops and restaurants in an effort to draw customers to the area. Now, 25 years later, that determination has paid off. That small group of business owners has transformed into the Alpharetta Business Association and Alpharetta has become one of the best cities to live, work and play in Metro Atlanta. The Alpharetta Business Association was originally known as the Downtown Alpharetta Business Association (DABA) created 25 years ago. Today, the Alpharetta Business Association continues its commitment to the historic Alpharetta area as it continues to grow, change, and provide unlimited opportunities. The Alpharetta Business Association’s reach now extends beyond downtown to every corner of Alpharetta. The organization welcomes all businesses in Alpharetta and the surrounding areas to join. Alpharetta Business Association membership includes
dedicated business professionals who work together to improve the business climate in Alpharetta. The Alpharetta Business Association is the presenting organization of many local events and projects, including: • Downtown Alpharetta Farmers Market – award-winning market featuring nearly 100 vendors every Saturday from mid-April to the end of October. • Alpharetta Business Expo – one of the largest business expos in North Fulton County. • Brew Moon Fests – spring and fall events featuring live music, food, and of course brews. • State of the City Address and Mayor’s Breakfast – annual event for the Alpharetta Mayor to deliver the outlook for the City in the coming year. • Alpharetta Guidebook – comprehensive magazine that provides information about the City. • Monthly morning and evening networking meetings.

Morrow Family Medicine: bringing care back to healthcare Morrow Family Medicine is an independent family practice that uses state-of-the-art technology combined with old-fashioned care to produce the best outcomes for our patients. Having practiced in Forsyth and North Fulton since 1998, Dr. Jim Morrow founded the practice in 2011 in Cumming. Morrow Family Medicine expanded into North Fulton with a location in Milton three years ago. Currently with seven providers, Morrow Family Medicine practices with a concentration in chronic disease management, episodic care and preventive medicine. Patients are able to be seen “same-day” by utilizing the morning walk-in hour that guarantees that no patient has to wait for the care they need and deserve. Patients are able to communicate online, via a smartphone app or traditional telephone to accomplish their healthcare goals. Return communication from the practice is prompt and useful, resulting in healthier outcomes for our patients. Morrow Family Medicine is the originator of the Forsyth BYOT Benefit. With two fund-raising events a year, the charity has donated over $300,000 to Forsyth County Schools to improve
the use of technology in the classroom and at home by providing devices and home Internet for those without it. At Morrow Family Medicine, we know that you have many choices for healthcare, but we will strive to be the best choice for you. We are a technologically advanced, yet “old-fashioned” family practice. If you are looking for people who care, you have come to the right place. We believe that you will find a home with Morrow Family Medicine. That’s why we are …bringing care back to healthcare.

Benefits of using a REALTOR® when going through the home buying and selling process Brought to you by – BILL RAWLINGS Senior Vice President & Managing Broker, North Atlanta Office, Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty is honored to have been chosen as the 2019 Best Real Estate Brokerage of North Atlanta by APPEN Media Group for the fourth Rawlings year in a row! We pride ourselves on creating relationships with our clients and successfully helping them find the homes of their dreams. Our focus is on our clients, as we provide million-dollar marketing for homes in all price ranges and believe that service defines the Sotheby’s International Realty® brand, not price point. There are numerous benefits to using an agent when you are in the market to buy a new home, as this can be a stressful and intimidating process. Having a licensed professional to help walk you through the buying process can help to relieve the pressure and make your experience more enjoyable. Especially for a first-time home buyer, an agent will be by your side to answer your questions and concerns and prepare you for potential obstacles that may arise while professionally marketing your home to prospective buyers. Finding the right home for you: Once you deter-
mine what you are looking for, the next step will be for your REALTOR® to book appointments and walk you through potential homes. These appointments can help narrow down your criteria and determine what you truly desire in a home. Your REALTOR® will have the knowledge to explain the area, neighborhoods, schools and valuable information you will need to know before making a final decision to purchase a home. Negotiating an offer: Your agent will advise you on an acceptable offer price, while also helping you to negotiate a deal that could save you money. This is such a crucial part of buying a home, and it allows your REALTOR® to use their expertise in the negotiation process. Professional recommendations: There are so many aspects to buying a home and professional resources are always needed. Agents make suggestions on reliable sources they have used in the past, from a trustworthy mortgage broker to home inspectors – just another way a real estate agent can help to relieve stress during the process of finding a new home. Overcoming obstacles: During the due-diligence period, new issues can arise and a real estate professional can help counsel you toward a solution. This is a time when negotiation is key and it is extremely helpful to have someone on your side who is knowledgeable, experienced, calm and in control, should a situation occur.
Please keep Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty in mind next time you are in the market to buy a new home. Our trained sales professionals are the perfect guides to walk you through the buying and selling process. Best DERMATOLOGIST
An interview with Dr. Taylor By Alyssa McNamara I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win and again this week after his 3rd consecutive Best of win to talk about his continued success. The following is a compilation of both interviews. Last year’s interview took place while Dr. Taylor held his newborn son Broderick or “Bodi.” As we discussed his practice’s progress, he laughed at the “happy chaos” that is his home life. Even without a newborn in his arms, he is as I remember him – warm and likeable. I looked back at my notes from my last interview and my observations still apply: “After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown. He is warm, instantly calming, respectful and shockingly intelligent. Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and surgical ability are well established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician.” Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Atlanta yet again! You must be proud. It is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone several years in a row! To what do you attribute to your success? Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much! You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade. I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons. Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me. I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patientcentered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them. Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe that the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated
into improved processes within my own practice. But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff! We have the same amazing staff that we did last year with one excellent addition. Given that, we are a small practice with only 8 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients. We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We have been open over two and half years now and are constantly trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence. Is there something that you feel sets you apart? Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care. And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule. Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred to other specialists or simply not be handled, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and board-certified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with a lab that allows me to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques. Could you please comment on your background and experience? Dr. Taylor: I believe my experience is notable given my number of years in
practice. Surgeons gain experience and perfect their skills through research and practice. As a result of training at very busy institutions then working for some of the busiest practices in Florida, I have performed over ten thousand dermatologic procedures. I completed my fellowship 5 years ago. Having been a Mohs surgeon at the University of Florida and also working in private practice in Florida before moving to Atlanta to be closer to family, I was lucky enough to take care of a great many patients who had extremely large cancers and required extensive reconstruction. As you might imagine, Florida residents need considerable dermatologic care. I am honored to take care of people with genuine need and am lucky to have been prepared by
outstanding mentors who trained me. Upon starting my own practice here in Alpharetta, I already had the volume of experience usually found with a Mohs surgeon who has been in practice much longer. Anything else you’d like to say? Dr. Taylor: I really just want to say thank you very much! Thank you to our staff: you are valued and wonderful and we wouldn’t be continuing to excel without each and every one of you! Also thank you so very much to all of our patients and our community! Your confidence and support is greatly appreciated and rewarding. I look forward to continuing to strive to provide patients with exceptional care.

Exquisite Living – Honored to be voted Best Furniture/Home Décor of North Atlanta 2019! Exquisite Living owner, Zaina Wuest, and her team, are honored to be voted Best Furniture/Home Décor in the 2019 Best of North Atlanta contest. In just a few short years, Zaina Wuest has transformed her side gig as an interior designer to a thriving furniture and home design business. Exquisite Living opened its doors in 2016 with a store on Atlanta Highway. The space has since more than doubled from 3,200 square feet to 8,200 square feet. In 2017, Wuest left her corporate job to run the store full time. This year, Exquisite Living opened its second location in Alpharetta City Center, right across from City Hall. The stylish furniture and elegant décor are right at home among the boutiques of the downtown. Wuest credits her company’s fast growth and success to its superior customer service and the bonds she forms with her clients. “It’s about the relationship and not feeling like you’ve gone somewhere and somebody just tried to sell you something,” she said. Exquisite Living employs four consul-
Wuest credits her company’s fast growth and success to its superior customer service and the bonds she forms with her clients. tants with an educational background in interior design. “It’s one of the things we do differently, which is the reason our design side has done tremendously,” Wuest said. “Most furniture stores offer complementary design service, but that’s just a sales person going in there and seeing what inventory they can pull out of the store.” The designers work with the sales team and the client to help the homeowners come up with a plan for their space. “We discuss with the client what their priorities are, their budget,” Wuest said. “We’re really big on respecting budget and timeline.”
When she set out to build Exquisite Living, Wuest studied the factors that usually prevent someone from hiring a professional designer. Many shoppers feel pressured by sales people who put artificial deadlines on the design process, she said. Wuest then set out to eliminate those hang-ups from her business model. “The client can take a look at [the plan] and say ‘Today I have budget for two rooms. Six months down the road when my husband gets his bonus, I can do upstairs,’ and so on and so forth,” She said. “I think that’s a big differentiator for us. No one feels pressured.” The designs give homeowners confidence in how their rooms will turn out. “Once they get the plan they feel comfortable because they can visualize what their home is going to look like and now the decision is up to them when they want to do it and how much they want to spend,” she said. This strategy of putting service before sales has proven fruitful, with many clients returning to Exquisite Living for multiple rooms or even multiple houses. Wuest said developing trust with the
homeowners is the most valuable currency for her. With a new location in the heart of Alpharetta, Wuest is looking for new ways to have Exquisite Living be involved with the community. She is researching ways the business can help local philanthropic groups. “I really want to decorate for those children that suffer from cancer and have just a few days left, where they can be in a room that they enjoy and the room that they always wanted,” she said. Another way the company is getting involved in the community, Exquisite Living recently partnered with Appen Media Group to hold a room makeover sweepstakes. One lucky Herald newspaper reader won a $5,000 room redesign. “Every business ought to do something like this, especially when you’re such a neighborhood kind of business,” Wuest said. “I’d like to continue finding opportunities like that to do more.” Exquisite Living has stores at 374 Commerce Street and 6225 Atlanta Highway. For more information about its services, visit exquisitelivingatl.com or call (770) 807-0675.

Isn’t my home worth more money? My neighbor’s home sold quickly and for more than asking price, but not mine. John Hogan, owner of Remodeling Expo Center, says “I’m confronted with this question all the time.” At Remodeling Expo Center we’re in the business of making our customer’s home investment grow. Mr. Hogan emphasizes. “It’s both an art and a science”. People can debate about how much, or what to remodel but the core answer is – “Remodeling is an investment, not an expense”, and because it’s such a large investment, professional advice should be sought. I general, people who do not ever remodel their homes, and believe that their homes will naturally appreciate are the people who are the most disappointed with their home values. The fact is that, the value of a home is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it, and as time passes, the desirability of the elements of a home change (closet size, stainless appliances, etc.). It’s analogous to a stock market investor rebalancing their portfolio over time. These days people move around a lot, due to schools, jobs etc. “My favorite customers are the one who have made significant profits because we’ve remodeled 2 or 3 homes for them” says Mr. Hogan. “We know what the new home buyer wants, and we adapt homes to have these features, designs and colors, so they sell fast and for maximum price. We know where and how much money to spend. We advise homeowners to spend only “Smart money”.
At Remodeling Expo Center we’re in the business of making our customer’s home investment grow. Home owners who profit on the sale of their homes have a savvy investor attitude and just like the stock market, if you don’t invest, you don’t profit. And just like the stock market, over time, it only goes up. With your home, invest in the right amounts and in the right places” your home value will increase impressively. Here are some examples of easy ways to improve home value: open up the kitchen to the family room, make room for a big single level island, paint the house something other than beige!, remove all the cultured marble in the bathroom, get rid of all the gold/brass fixtures in the bathroom and lastly install recessed can lighting to brighten the house up. To learn more about how to boost your home value, contact The Remodeling Expo Center at 404 910-3969 or stop in at 48 King Street, Roswell, GA 30075. www.RemodelingExpo.com

The best breakfast is here! Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants. There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market. For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene. The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised. Just a few examples: We squeeze orange juice every morn-
ing. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice. We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all. Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on. We are very proud to be once again voted Best Breakfast in The Best of North Atlanta and we want to thank our loyal clientele who obviously appreciates our uncompromising commitment to serving the same menu year after year after year without changing a thing.

Your go-to burger joint After 1 million branded-bun burgers, we are so very grateful to be your go-to burger joint for good times and great food! THANK YOU for choosing BurgerFi as BEST BURGER for six years in a row! THANK YOU for voting us winner of BEST FAMILY RESTAURANT! THANK YOU, for BEST PATIO DINING runner up! We are humbled and privileged to be honored with this kind of love & support from you, our community! Often, we are asked, what does “BurgerFi” mean? BurgerFi is abbreviated from “BurgerFication”, meaning ‘changing the way people eat burgers.’ BurgerFi changed the operational model burger chains have used for decades; the biggest change is in the quality of meat we serve. Our meat is superior to any other quick serve restaurant; here’s how we know how our quality stacks up: BurgerFi Scores “A” Grade BurgerFi was identified as one of the TOP two national brands in the burger industry having the highest standards for our beef. We received an «A» grade on the 4th Annual Chain Reaction Scorecard released by six major consumer and environmental organizations. Of 25 brands tested, BurgerFi received
“A”, next brand was «D minus», ALL remaining 22 brands scored an «F». Serving responsibly raised, antibioticfree, American Black Angus Beef has ALWAYS been the BurgerFi business model, delivering clean, fresh food plus the good practices that stand behind it. You know our great taste, now you know we serve you the highest quality beef out there! What’s NEW? Fi’ed Chicken tenders! Chicken Breast Tenders, served with your choice of dipping sauce: Fi Sauce, Bacon Jalapeño Ranch, Honey Mustard Barbecue, Memphis Sweet Barbecue or Garlic Aioli. You’ll love ‘em, sauce up! Tenders are on our kids’ menu too & they eat free Monday nights! All chicken offerings are cage free, no hormone, antibiotics, chemicals or additives, ever! Or our Fi’ed Chicken Sandwich with its crispy, oh my goodness is topped with Honey Mustard Barbecue sauce! Another newbie is our plant based Beyond Burger, zero cholesterol, no soy or gluten yet great taste & texture Vegan and Vegetarian friendly with 20 grams of protein! Enjoy A Frozen CUSTARD! Let’s face it, sometimes you just need
a little something sweet. So, bring the family and hang out on the “Best Patio” to create some moments to remember. We suggest having a MILKSHAKE party to celebrate the end of summer. Vote for your favorite flavor: Red Velvet, Vanilla, Chocolate, BlacK-and-White, Strawberry, Oreo, Coffee Mocha or whatever combination you want us to make for you! We love this community! Our passion? Serving you, in store or catering on site and partnering with you to give
back to over thirty of our community centered charities such as No Longer Bound, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Drake House. If you haven’t visited us yet, we invite you to join us this week. In a hurry? Download our ap to order pick up or deliveries. Thank you again, we are proud to serve you! — BurgerFi Team Alpharetta, BurgerFi.com
Your pet deserves the best We are truly honored and extremely grateful to have been selected as the First Runner Up for Best Veterinarian North Atlanta 2019, thank you to those who voted for us. In our 45 years serving the North Atlanta communities, we can always attribute our success to three things: our doctors, our staff, and our CLIENTS. If it weren’t for our amazing clients entrusting us with their pets and allowing us to build long-lasting
relationships with them and their pets, we wouldn’t be who we are today. We are so very grateful for our incredible staff who show up daily and love your pets as much as you do, and work tirelessly to provide them with the best care. And we feel so very blessed and humbled to be your top choice... we don’t take that lightly. Thank you so much for choosing Alpharetta Animal Hospital!

Fulton Science Academy Private School Recently named the most diverse high school in Atlanta and ranked as seventh overall by Niche.com, Fulton Science Academy Private School (FSAPS) is one of Alpharetta’s most unique educational institutions. Nestled in the heart of Alpharetta near downtown, FSAPS is accessible and strategically located. With the student population approximately 675, FSAPS emphasizes small classes and an intimate student-teacher ratio. This classroom model allows for personalized, learning-focused preparation and enhances the overall citizenship of students. In addition to a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum, FSAPS is STEM and AdvancedEd accredited. This means students pursue advanced content for core subject areas, including high school offerings of AP courses. For two years, FSAPS has produced semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Although it is emphasized, academic excellence is only part of the equation. Students are guided by acclaimed, published, and nationally recognized experts in math, social studies, science, and robotics. The academic teams at FSAPS have been honored to represent the state of Georgia not just nationally, but also internationally. These competitions
have included Math Counts, Science Olympiad, and more. Students also have opportunities to participate in national honor societies and leadership groups. They are supported closely by advisors, who work with them in small groups to accomplish leadership and service-oriented projects that significantly impact their communities. Our mission statement reads: “To establish an educational framework designed to achieve the highest academic results and instill enduring strength of
character by leveraging innovation and STEAM curriculums for college preparedness and lifelong student success.” These words convey the objectives not only of the institution’s outstanding students, but also of the faculty. At FSAPS, students are encouraged to think outside the box, to practice and apply critical thinking, and to understand the impact of their actions and innovations on the greater community; more important, students are encouraged to practice supporting others and their initiatives.
At the 2019 graduation ceremony of FSAPS’s first senior class, the collective diversity of volunteerism, leadership, academics, athletics, and creativity were evidenced as the driving force behind the graduates. It was not one characteristic of any individual, but the collective aspects of an FSAPS education coming together to produce a complete student, prepared and ready to thrive in the outside world. Graduates from this class have gone on to pursue honor programs at some of the nation’s top universities, including: Brown, UC Berkeley, Purdue, UNC Chapel Hill, and Georgia Tech. As an organization that combines academics with professionalism, community involvement and partnerships are pivotal. As a member of the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG), students here have access to resources that help build life skills. Many students have been accepted into the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce (GNFCC) Young Leaders Program annually, and more have participated in events hosted by the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce. These relationships cement for students the truth that they are more than just individuals, but integral parts of a greater community with important roles.

Home Helpers of Alpharetta is honored to once again be voted the Best Home Care for Seniors in North Atlanta. Marking our third year in a row, we’d like to sincerely thank everyone who voted for us! “It’s been so rewarding to be trusted by our clients and their families as we partner to help them maintain their independence as they age in place in the comfort of their own home” say Hilary and Greg Eldridge. “We feel that through it all, it’s our commitment to a truly personalized approach that makes the difference between good and great care. As our clients have needs that change, we fine tune their care and do everything we can to help them thrive.” Hilary and Greg built this business as a tribute to Hilary’s father, and set out seven years ago to raise the bar for in-home care. “I saw what a difference truly personalized care made in my Dad’s life and always strive to provide the kind of care he’d be proud to have inspired”, says Hilary. “His youthfulspirit perspective is the cornerstone of our commitment to recognize that despite the passing years, each of our clients has a youthful spirit. Engaging that lets us share in the richness of their lives, both past and the present.” Our caregivers and supervisory team are key to our success, and you’ll quickly recognize that this is more than a career for them, it’s a calling. Their heart-centered approach to caregiving is apparent when you see them connect with a client to not just bring a smile, but help bring confidence and joy to face the day. We go through a careful caregiver and client matching process, with screening and training programs that recognize not just their skills, but their personality and spirit. We’re there when you need us - from six hours a day, several days a week to 24/7 care.
A Home Helpers caregiver has the skills to assist with all personal care, help around the house, safely speed up recovery from surgery, or provide specialized care for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc. “One of the biggest changes we’ve seen this year is the growing realization on the part of our clients and their families that as physical and emotional needs become more complex, live-in care is an alternative that can be an ideal choice”, says Greg. “The continuity of care and totally customized service is a major benefit for your loved one. With typically two caregivers involved, the reliability and constancy can be very calming. A heart-centered Home Helper caregiver lives in a home for four days a week, with another caregiver completing the weekly schedule. They provide all the support needed and sleep there, so they are available for minimal quick assistance at night or when emergencies happen. As long as they can get five hours of uninterrupted sleep and eight hours total for a good night’s rest, it provides a safe and secure environment in the comfort of home. With a daily versus hourly fee, it can also be sound economically.” For a free in-home consultation to create a customized plan to help your loved one live life to the fullest, please call Home Helpers of Alpharetta at (678) 430-8511.

Milton football travels to California for ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton football made history Sept. 14 by becoming the state’s first high school football team to play in California when the Eagles took on California powerhouse JSerra Catholic in the Trinity League vs. USA showcase at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif. While the result did not go the Eagles’ way — they fell 17-14 in a contest that went down to the wire —the experience was unlike any other in the realm of high school football. “You could not have scripted a better three days,” head coach Adam Clack said. “Watching the team grow and spend time together and share a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can’t put a price tag on that or manufacture that experience. To see them form those bonds, it was awesome, and the kids behaved so well.” There were certainly logistical challenges related to transporting 82 players, an entire coaching staff, support personnel and parents through airports, bus rides and hotels, but Clack said there were no issues. “From airport customs, loading buses and being on a super tight schedule, the kids were always on time,” he said. Outside of their football contest,

Just a few hours before most Atlanta area teams were huddled in locker rooms away from the severe weather that delayed or postponed most Friday games, the Eagles were enjoying their time in the sun and on the sands of Venice Beach. And for a few minutes, they had the unique experience of running play walk-throughs with the Pacific Ocean providing background. “The experience of something like that really tied together where we were and what this trip was about,” Clack said. “We were at the Pacific Ocean to play a football game and to have the

Thousands of seniors and Americans with disabilities across Georgia depend on high-quality, cost-effective skilled home health for post-acute, rehabilitative and chronic care services. Despite the value of home health, recent policies have put access to this essential health sector at risk. The Partnership thanks Congresswoman Lucy McBath for leading efforts in Congress to ensure seniors and individuals with disabilities are able to receive care in the comfort of their own homes, where they can remain independent and be close to loved ones. We applaud Congresswoman McBath for recognizing the clinical value of home health and the key role it can plan in achieving savings, improving our nation’s healthcare system, and securing Medicare for the future.

experience of building a team through shared moments.” After touring UCLA and holding a tailgate party, the Eagles strapped up for their contest against JSerra, ranked in the top-50 nationally by MaxPreps and High School Football America. After falling to Georgia powerhouse Buford on Sept. 6, the Eagles took another close, frustrating loss. Milton took a 14-7 lead into halftime behind a touchdown rush from Ahmad Junearick and a Jack Nickel score on a fake punt, but the Eagles couldn’t close the game out in the second half. “The defense played really well in the first half, and the offense was moving the ball well,” Clack said. “We had a lot
of good things going for us, but we came out in the second half and couldn’t pick up where we had left off. In the first half [JSerra] was looking tired, they flipped that on us in the second half.” The Lions opened the third quarter with a long drive but came away scoreless. But after both teams exchanged several possessions, JSerra broke through to tie the game midway through the fourth. The Eagles opted to go for fourthand-short in their own territory on the ensuing drive. While Clack said they were confident in the play call, the Lions forced a turnover on downs. JSerra took advantage with a field goal to take its first lead of the contest with around two minutes remaining, leaving Milton in need of a quick scoring drive. “We orchestrated a nice drive and got it down to [JSerra’s] 20-yard line, and we wanted to take one shot to the end zone with one time out and about 10 seconds left,” Clack said. “Unfortunately, we gave up a sack and it moved the ball backwards and knocked us out of field goal range.” With one second left on the clock, the Eagles went for the game-winning Hail Mary, but their dramatic comeback hopes were dashed with an incompletion. “I definitely think we represented ourselves and our state well, but it’s tough because we really would have liked to have represented with a win,” Clack said. “We have come up short two weeks in a row, but we have fought hard in both games. We are still growing and learning, and we have areas we can improve on. We talk about some of the little things that make a difference after these close loses, and once we address those, we’ll come out with hard-fought wins in these close games.” Despite the disappointing loss, Clack said he and the team are forever grateful for the experience. “I have to give a huge shout out to our booster club and parents and fan support we had along the way for helping us make this possible,” he said. “It stings we had a loss, but at the end of the day this is a lifelong memory for these kids, and it will grow the team, the program and the community. We appreciate all the love and support.”

Storms wreak havoc on local football games By JOE PARKER and ZACH SHUGAN joe@appenmediagroup.com
More coverage online Several local games were played Monday, Sept. 16 after press time. For results, visit northfulton.com/ sports.
NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Thunderstorms and lightning delayed, postponed or canceled several local high school football games Sept. 13. Only two local games, Blessed Trinity vs. Benedictine and South Forsyth’s matchup with South Gwinnett, were completed. Matchups between West Forsyth and Roswell, Forsyth Central and Denmark, and Lambert versus Peachtree Ridge were all cancelled due to weather. Because these games are non-region matchups, they are not required to be played to completion. However, region games must be played under GHSA rules, which postponed most local contests. All Region 7-AAAAAA games were delayed. Three games — Dunwoody vs. Cambridge, Centennial vs. Pope and Chattahoochee vs. Northview — were played Saturday, Sept. 14. Centennial played an early afternoon game and fell to Pope while Cambridge and Chattahoochee fell in Saturday night contests. Johns Creek and North Atlanta decided to reschedule their matchup for Monday, Sept. 16. All Class-A Private local games scheduled for Friday were postponed until Sept 16. Those games include Fellowship Christian vs. Walker, Mount Pisgah vs. Whitefield Academy, St. Francis vs. Lakeview Academy and Athens Christian at Pinecrest Academy. The following games were played to completion over the weekend: South Forsyth 35, South Gwinnett 28 South Forsyth took down South Gwinnett for the second straight year and improved to 2-0 on the road this season. South Forsyth took an early lead with a double pass touchdown throw to Tre Green on their first possession and added another score before the end of the first to lead 13-0. The Comets responded with two unanswered scores in the second quarter to take their first lead of the game, but the War Eagles scored a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to reclaim the lead with under five seconds left in the first half. South gave up a long score on the Comets’ opening possession of the second half, but the PAT failed. A Cameron Schurr touchdown grab pushed the score to 28-20, and with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, South Forsyth put its lead at two scores with another trip to the end zone. After a weather delay, play resumed with under four minutes remaining. South Gwinnett ramped up the excite-
Both teams continue their Region 7-AAAAAA schedules Sept. 20. Dunwoody (2-1, 1-0) will take on Northview at North Dekalb Stadium, while Cambridge (1-2, 0-1) goes on the road against Centennial. Pope 48, Centennial 28 Centennial fell to Pope in a rare Saturday afternoon game Sept. 14 after Friday’s weather pushed back the start of the contest. Several first half turnovers from Centennial allowed Pope to build a 27-14 lead at the half. The Greyhounds added two long touchdowns in the third and a rushing touchdown early in the fourth to push the lead to 48-14. Though Centennial found the end zone twice in the fourth, Pope’s lead was too much to overcome. The Knights were led by Julian Nixon and Richard Shaw who both had two touchdown receptions. Centennial (0-3, 0-1) will look for their first win of the season at home Sept. 20 against Cambridge (1-2, 0-1).

Chattahoochee’s Andre Banks (9) runs into a Northview defender Sept. 14. Northview took a 42-35 dramatic win in the crosstown rivalry game, which was postponed Sept. 13 due to lightning. ment with a touchdown with around two minutes remaining. After forcing a War Eagles punt, the Comets were back on the ball looking for the tying score, but South Forsyth held on for the win. South Forsyth (3-1) has a bye before its final non-region game against Hillgrove on Sept. 27. Dunwoody 21, Cambridge 19 Dunwoody took a tight win over Cambridge in both squads’ Region 7-AAAAAA opener. A touchdown rush from Phillip Michael Collins gave the Bears an early 6-0 lead, but the Wildcats scored three unanswered touchdowns to take a 21-6 lead into the half.
Collins led Cambridge’s comeback with a touchdown midway through the third, but the PAT was blocked, leaving the Bears trailing 21-12. Collins again found the end zone with five minutes remaining in the game to set up a thrilling finish. Cambridge’s offense was back on the ball in the final minutes looking for the go-ahead score, but a field goal attempt with under two minutes remaining was no good and the Wildcats held on. Dunwoody quarterback Davis Ledoyen led the Wildcats with 333 yards passing with two touchdowns. Tyler Eith had 14 receptions for 213 yards with a touchdown. Cevon Mitchell added a rushing score for Dunwoody.
Northview 42, Chattahoochee 35 Northview prevailed in a thrilling backyard brawl over Chattahoochee Saturday night to open its Region 7-AAAAAA slate with a win. The Titans led 28-7 at the half behind two touchdowns from quarterback Beau Lark, but Hooch fought back in the second half to set up a dramatic finish. Chattahoochee quarterback Jahmal Smith threw a long touchdown pass early in the third quarter and cut the margin to one score with another scoring throw early in the fourth. Northview responded with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Lark to push the lead to 35-21, but Hooch was back in the end zone quickly with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Jordan Palmer. Hooch knotted the game at 35 with four minutes remaining with a touchdown rush from Palmer, but Northview ended the dramatic second half with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Lark to Samuel Babadele. Chattahoochee (1-2, 0-1) will battle another intra-city foe Friday when the Cougars return home to face Johns Creek. Northview (2-1, 1-0) will go on the road to face Dunwoody.

A stranger’s discourse on modern trucks 2019 Ford Ranger The man waiting for his new tires to be installed was in a talking mood. Punctuated by the yelping of impact wrenches, he talked at length about what is wrong with the modern truck marJOE PARKER ket. You see, he said, Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com the issue is that new trucks are way too big, technological and expensive. But he knew how to address the problem. All that was needed to get affordable, new trucks into the hands of his blue-collar brethren was a company — of his creation — to manufacture a basic rolling chassis and body. These would be sold directly from the factory, no dealerships whatsoever, he said proudly. Buyers could then paint the body whatever color they wanted, spruce up the interior with whatever amenities and materials that tickled their fancy

(my words), chose their own wheels and tires and make all the necessary connections. In just a short while, you can have a brand-new truck, mostly of your own creation, that will get the job done without breaking the bank. I still have no idea what spurred the man into talking about his idea, maybe it was the rubber fumes, but his sentiments do have merit. After all, trucks these days are big and full of tech. Of course, that makes new models expensive and beyond the means of the average working man. However, I can see more than a few holes in his plan to address the issue. So, while we wait for his kit truck company to get off the ground, those wanting a midsize truck will have to turn to the established market, which again includes the Ford Ranger, pronounced dead in 2011 but now back in the fray. Mr. Tire Shop Man would likely not be happy with the price of the new Ranger. The SuperCrew (extended cab) in Lariat trim starts at over $38,000, and my tester had several options, including the Lariat technology, trailer tow, sport appearance and FX4 off-road packages, putting the grand total at nearly $44,000. And that is the territory of the Ranger’s big brother. An F-150 Lariat SuperCrew starts at just a few hundred dollars more. But of course, not all will want the added size of a half-ton. The Ranger is easy to park in crowded lots, it never felt cumbersome while traveling along city thoroughfares and most people will be able to fit it in their garage, a sphincterclenching process in an F-150. That is not to say the Ranger is miniscule. Whether a SuperCrew or SuperCab (short cab), the 2019 Ranger is seven inches longer, 14 inches wider and around four inches higher than the biggest 2011 model. Of course, in the 2002 Ranger XLT I once owned, you had to sit sideways on a pullout seat that was about as wide as a single buttock if you wanted to sit behind the front row. The 2019 model is far more accommodating in the rear, though calling it comfortable would be a stretch. The backrests sit straight upright, and the cushions rise sharply to the front and sit low to the floorboard. Sitting in the rear made me feel like I was standing at attention from the waist up and in the fetal position south of my belt. Comfort increases exponentially in the front where there is plenty of room to wiggle and the seats are cozy, but the ride is a bit jarring. My tester came with aforementioned FX4 off-road package, so the all-terrain
SPECIAL
tires, tuned suspension and off-road shocks could be to blame. If so, you will be sacrificing road comfort for ability off the paved paths — my Ranger bounced around town and over even the most insignificant road imperfections. Ford recently announced an FX2 package which adds some of the same amenities for two-wheel drive models. At this point Mr. Tire Shop Man would likely be huffing at my complaints over the rear seats and springy ride. Trucks are meant for work, not comfort, he’d likely say. For that, the Ranger does fit the bill for those who need to do some hauling but do not need the capability of a halfton truck. But don’t get the assumption it is a slouch. The Ranger’s bed can handle between 1,560-1,860 pounds with an extended cab providing 43-cubic feet of cargo space and the short cab offering nine more cubic feet. All models can tow up to 3,500 pounds but opting for the trailer tow package ($495) increases that figure to 7,500, which is actually more than some full-sized trucks depending on the engine under the hood. On the topic of engines, there is only one option for the Ranger, but it is a gem. The 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline four dishes out 270 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. The Ranger’s power plant is 30 horsepower in the negative compared to the Chevy Colorado’s 2.5-liter inline four, but it blasts the 152-horspower Nissan Frontier’s four-banger and is not far off from the ponies offered by the V6-powered Honda Ridgeline and Toyota Tacoma. No matter the comparison, the EcoBoost is silky smooth while providing quick acceleration and plenty of grunt. Around town it’s mostly quiet and buttery in its power delivery and is highly responsive to acceleration input. The
EcoBoost is paired with a 10-speed automatic that is generally unnoticeable but can stumble in stop-and-go driving. Although it would likely be deemed superfluous to Tire Shop Man, the base Ranger’s interior is pretty barebones. You get the same 2.3-inch infotainment screen and “productivity” screen in the instrument cluster that came in my wife’s 2014 Fiesta, vinyl floor covering and a legally required backup camera. Most buyers will want to opt for the mid-level XLT trim which adds a Wi-Fi hotspot, cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind spot monitoring, automatic high beams, a USB port, dual zone climate control and an 8-inch touchscreen. Lariat trim adds a B&O sound system, adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, leather-trimmed seating and other features. While the Ranger’s exterior is rather handsome, the interior look evokes a hearty “meh.” Though some controls and buttons are small for those with sausage fingers, the layout is intuitive, and switching from two to four-wheel drive can be done on the fly with a turn of the consolemounted dial. The same knob controls Ford’s Terrain Management System that tunes the Ranger for driving on mud, sand, snow or other surfaces. In its first year back, the revitalized Ranger can have a ride bouncier than a Baywatch babes’ chest, its backseat is best suited for contortionists and the price tag can balloon quickly to half-ton money in higher trim. But the Ranger also has a fantastic engine, good midsize capability, respectable MPG figures, and ample overall size without being a behemoth. But it is nowhere as memorable as Tire Shop Man’s tirade.

GET’s ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ sizzles with Southern drama Williams’ classic mix of sex, family, money still crackles today By HATCHER HURD Special ROSWELL, Ga. — Georgia Ensemble Theatre’s choice to open its 2019-20 season with the sultry Tennessee Williams’ classic “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” shows it still remains true to its tenet of bringing quality theater to the exurbs. And it succeeds. Williams’ play of Southern gothic family dysfunction sips at family politics, sexual politics, greed and “mendacity” like a tall cool mint julep out on the veranda. A warm evening breeze passes through the red oak trees draped in Spanish moss as it tries to cool family passions coming to a boil at Big Daddy’s 65th birthday party. Big Daddy thinks he has returned with the news that he doesn’t have cancer just a “spastic colon” and has many more years to preside over his near feudal estate of $10 million and “20,000 acres of the richest land this side of the Valley Nile.” But the family has lied to him and now are preparing to break the news that he is dying. But who will have control of this vast empire? Older brother, the dutiful Gooper (Topher Payne) and his dutiful wife May, affectionately known as Sister Woman (Kelly Criss), hope that the five “no-necked” offspring they have produced will cement Gooper’s place as heir to the empire. Big Mama (Karen Howell) has her own
ideas on that score. Favorite younger son Brick (Joe Sykes) is indifferent to it all, finding all his solace in a whiskey bottle. But then there is Brick’s wife, Maggie, Maggie the Cat, (Kate Donadio MacQueen) who has the biggest stake of all. She has the biggest fight of all, reclaiming the love of her husband and ensuring his share in the estate. The Beverly Hillbillies they ain’t. GET Associate Artistic Director James Donadio said he was delighted to have “Cat” open GET’s 2019-20 season because not only is it Williams at his best, it was a chance to dig deeper into the original play – or plays. Written and set in the 1950s, Donadio said there were no less than five iterations of the drama, not to mention Hollywood’s somewhat timid and “uplifting” ending. How could Paul Newman not make up with his unfaithful wife if she is Liz Taylor? “And of course Hollywood at the time censored most of the references to homosexuality alluded to in the play,” Donadio said. “This play is an amalgamation of the texts from those five plays, plus the screenplay.” This play is ambivalent concerning whether Brick reciprocated in kind to his best friend’s feelings. It is left deliberately ambiguous. What is not ambiguous is how “Maggie the Cat” will fight for her husband, her marriage and her place in this family. Indeed, it is Maggie’s play. According to the notes, the first 29 pages are almost all Maggie’s lines. So it is well that Kate McQueen returns to the GET stage to possess it so completely. She stalks, she flashes her claws and she purrs with a defiance and sense of purpose of a

For Maggie is a survivor, and MacQueen gives her the spark that illuminates all that comes after. Sykes as Brick does a superior job of making the hopelessly alcoholic Brick a sympathetic character, one who is tortured by the betrayal of both his best friend (for dying – one may presume suicide) and his wife for sleeping with him (if only once). Maxwell as Big Daddy brings a force and a presence on which much depends. For much of the play, his is a role of force and vigor but only alluded to offstage. Once he arrives, he possesses that stage. In all, it is Tennessee Williams at his best. And while in today’s times not quite so shocking as in the ‘50s in which he wrote it, the play is still arresting.

Alpharetta Legionnaires send 10,000th care package to troops ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta American Legion Post 201 recently dispatched its 10,000th package to troops overseas. Each package contains items such as non-perishable foods and snacks, magazines, books and toiletries. The chairman of the post’s package program, Steve Olesnevich, said the special handling packages are expensive to mail, running about $19 each. Alpharetta softball eyes playoffs after blowout win BY ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta softball made it look easy Thursday night against region opponent North Atlanta. The Lady Raiders cruised to a 16-1 victory at home with the game called in the bottom of the third inning due to the run rule. Megan McCullough and Becca Parham combined for nine RBIs while Alexis Lopresti struck out two batters and gave up no earned runs in the shortened contest. “It’s a good fire starter for us heading into next week,” said Alpharetta head coach Edward Francis. “It was good to see us clicking on all cylinders. We have
a really good offense from one to nine as long as we work together as a team. We kind of saw that a little bit tonight which was fun.” North Atlanta (8-7, 3-6) struck first, scoring a run in the first after the leadoff batter reached base on an error. After that, the Warriors were unable to produce any offense or stop the barrage of hits from the Lady Raiders’ offense. The Raiders scored six runs in the home half of the first inning, including a bases-loaded triple off the centerfield fence from Parham. Lopresti went three up, three down to start the second inning, and Alpharetta added three more runs to take a 9-1 lead going into the third. The
Lady Raiders continued their offensive attack in the bottom of the third inning until they reached a 15-run lead to seal the win. With Thursday’s win, Alpharetta moves to 8-5 on the season and 6-3 in region play, which puts the Raiders on the right side of the playoff bubble. The Raiders’ goals entering the season included a trip to the playoffs. While they are currently in position to achieve that goal, they have set their sights higher. “If we continue the success we’ve had in the first round of region play, we should at least make it into the playoffs as a four seed for sure,” Francis said. “But we’re shooting for that three seed. That’s our next goal.”
