ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man Jan. 17 for allegedly shooting three times at a car during an altercation at a home.

The incident began earlier in the evening when a woman said she had lost her phone while using the restroom at a local restaurant. The owner of the phone returned to the restroom and inquired whether the next occupant had seen a phone in the stall. The second woman denied having seen a phone, but the owner became insistent, police said.

Both women carried the confrontation outside into the parking lot. When the second woman drove off, the phone owner, standing with friends got a photo of the car’s license plate and then called police.

While talking to police, the driver learned the woman’s address. She drove to the residence with two friends after police left the parking lot.

Man receives fake bills in exchange for iPhone ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a Jan. 22 theft by deception in which a man was handed 35 fake $20 in exchange for an iPhone 11.

Late that evening, the man said he had met up with the suspect in front of the Alpharetta Police Department for the exchange. The two had arranged the transaction earlier through an online ad.

After the suspect left with the iPhone, the man realized he had been given counterfeit $20 bills.

Man robbed at gunpoint by three male suspects ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are looking for three suspects connected to the Jan. 16 armed robbery of a man at the Extended Stay America on Rock Mill Road.

That evening, the victim said he had

on the door and yelled out. Soon after, a man pulled up to the house. Passengers in his car began yelling at the woman on the doorstep. One of the passengers allegedly displayed a gun.

The woman returned to her car, drove a short distance to another driveway, then called police.

The man pulled up to her vehicle as she was trying to get out of the neighborhood. As she pulled away she said someone in the man’s vehicle fired three shots in her direction. One of the bullets, she said, hit her car.

Police later located the suspect, who said his niece had been alone in the house when the driver arrived and knocked.

The niece, afraid, had called him, and he had arrived to warn the woman off the property, he said.

Police arrested the man, identified as 38-year-old Joseph Anthony Leftenant of Duluth, on three counts of aggravated assault–firearm and discharging a firearm near a public roadway.

At that point, the ex-roommate took out a gun and demanded the man give him his valuables. When the man refused to comply, the suspects hit him several times, grabbed his car keys and ran out of the room.

Video catches suspects entering store safe ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating the Jan. 21 burglary of the McDonalds on Old Milton Parkway.

Police and fire responded to the location at 2 a.m. in response to a fire alarm. Officers determined the suspects had entered through the glass window of the drive-through. They also found that the suspects had cut a small square hole through the safe.

Responding officers noted that there was still a burning smell in the air.

Security footage showed two suspects enter around 1:30 a.m. One served as lookout while the second opened the safe using a torch.

DUI arrests Solangel Tejeda, 39, of Springmonte Place, Cumming, was arrested Jan. 20 on Executive Drive in Alpharetta for DUI. Darryn Jovonn Fray, 30, of Walt Lane NE, Woodstock, was arrested Jan. 19 on Ga. 400 in Alpharetta for DUI, failure to maintain lane and speeding.

Heladio Solis-Tapia, 34, of Old Norcross Road, Tucker, was arrested Jan. 18 on Ga. 400 in Alpharetta for DUI, driving while unlicensed and failure to maintain lane.

Matias Juhani Lepparanta, 24, for Gardner Drive, Alpharetta, was arrested Jan. 17 on Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta for DUI and reckless driving first offense.

George Thomas Arnett, 48, of Par Court, Roswell, was arrested Jan. 22 on Mansell Road in Roswell for DUI, headlight violation and tag light violation.

Christopher Brian Brooks, 22, of Cloverhurst Court, Cumming, was arrested Jan. 25 on Ga. 400 in Roswell for DUI, speeding and reckless driving.

Roswell instates temporary moratorium on certain housing applications Transparency issues arise regarding agenda process

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell has placed a moratorium on conditional-use applications for multi-family housing units for the next 90 days. Only those multi developments with over 75 percent square footage devoted to non-residential uses are exempt.

City Councilman Mike Palermo said the moratorium was established to give the city time to close loopholes in the Unified Development Code.

The vote passed unanimously at the Jan. 27 City Council meeting, but only three council members voted. In a rare move, the remaining three — council

members Matt Judy, Matthew Tyser and Marie Willsey — abstained.

Judy said he abstained because consideration of the moratorium did not follow proper channels.

The item had been added to the City Council’s agenda late afternoon on Friday, Jan. 24 by Palermo, Judy said.

Because the item had not gone through a committee first, Judy said he was worried about the transparency of the process.

“This came straight to council,” Judy said. “If I would have brought something five months ago to this council in this manner, I would have been told I was not transparent. This is a huge decision for the City of Roswell.”

He added that the moratorium could be the right tool, but he simple did not know on such short notice.

This is not the first time an item has

been added to the agenda without first going through the city’s procedures. At the Jan. 13 City Council meeting, the council members had voted to reinstate unofficial transcriptions of certain city meetings, but the decision went to the City Council before it was brought up for discussion at a committee meeting scheduled for Jan. 14.

When City Council members continued to question the practicalities of reinstating transcriptions for over an hour at the Jan. 13 meeting, Judy said it was a prime example why agenda items should first go to committee.

This time, Judy chose to abstain from the vote until the item went through the proper channels.

“This is not transparent,” he said.

“People will hear this is a moratorium.

They won’t hear it’s a moratorium for 90 days… This is something that’s going to

be judged in the court of public opinion, not necessarily on the facts. Voting on this this evening is irresponsible and not transparent.”

Palermo said he wants the city to use the 90-day moratorium to improve the city’s code. Some of the problems it could potentially address is the lack of redevelopment and density.

“The purpose of a moratorium is to ensure that we have the best code that’s going to bring this city forward,” Palermo said. “If we do not have a moratorium, then what that means is basically… developers could put in an application under the current code and therefore the improvements to the code would not impact them.”

The city currently has no pending multi-family applications, according to Community Development Director Alice Wakefield.

Alpharetta to debate bond issue for big-ticket projects Homestead exemption hike may go to voters this fall

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta homeowners may get another break on their property assessments next year. But it may not reduce their tax bill.

The City Council was scheduled this week to consider a proposal to increase its local homestead exemption by another $30,000. That would be good news to homeowners, because homestead exemptions reduce the taxable value of their property.

Already, Alpharetta homeowners save close to $3 million in local property taxes through the current $45,000 homestead exemption. This latest measure would almost double that savings.

If approved by the Legislature and passed by voters in a November referendum, the exemption would be the city’s second increase in two years.

The homestead exemption has no effect on Alpharetta’s commercial property, which makes up about 62 percent of the city’s property value. Of the roughly $23.5 million the city will collect in property taxes this year, commercial property owners will pay about $14.5 million.

Alpharetta City Councilman Jason Binder introduced the proposal early last month, coupling it with a plan to raise some $30 million in cash through a local bond referendum. If approved by voters, the bond would primarily go to pay for a number of city transportation and parks projects that have stalled due to lack of adequate funding.

“As a council, we should be aggressively improving our residents’ quality of life to keep pace with the economic growth of our city,” Binder said in remarks before this week’s meeting. “This not only means improving our roadways to allow our residents to get home quickly but also improving our amenities that makes Alpharetta unique.”

Binder also suggested the city is go-

ing to face serious traffic challenges on surface streets when the Georgia DOT places an express lane interchange on Ga. 400 near Webb Bridge Road.

Binder appears to have gathered a coalition of at least three other council members to get the exemption-bond package approved. The remaining three council members have been more reserved.

Mayor Jim Gilvin is one.

“If you accept the idea that we have too many unfunded projects and have to increase taxes on some property owners to pay for them, [then] I cannot understand the logic behind cutting taxes for

others who would benefit without paying for it,” he said.

Gilvin came out of the starting gate opposed to the measure, saying he cannot support shifting the tax burden for quality-of-life improvements to business and commercial property owners.

At the annual City Council retreat held Jan. 26 and 27, Councilman Ben Burnett, who supports the bond and homestead exemption proposals, said he’d like to reach an accord with all his colleagues.

“I would like to get to a place where the seven of us can live in agreement that these are the right things for our city,” he said.

Alpharetta maps out extra $8 million in capital improvements for this year

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — While Alpharetta prepares to draft a spending plan ahead of the 2021 budget, officials are considering a late slate of projects, totaling more than $7 million, available for funding in the current budget.

At the City Council’s annual retreat last week, Mayor Jim Gilvin unveiled his list of major capital projects to be added to the city’s mid-year budget for 2020. Those proposals were also set for further discussion at the council’s regular meeting on Monday.

Alpharetta operates on a fiscal year that runs from JulyJune, and the city’s budget regularly includes some money set aside for one-time improvements late in the year.

Latest figures show the city still has about $1.6 million in unallocated capital funding available. Money is also available from the city’s collection of impact fees on new construction, through the hotel/motel tax and from other sources.

The slate of new projects includes close to $8 million in spending.

Capital projects are one-time expenses, like new vehicles, street improvements or roof replacements.

“I’m identifying projects that I think are priorities for me and for the group and finding sources for those projects,” Gilvin said.

Top of the list is acquisition of more parkland. Gilvin has proposed committing another $5 million to the effort this year.

In the wake of heavy development the city has undergone the past decade, Alpharetta officials say they want to secure enough park space to maintain a high quality of life as the city grows.

“The challenge is finding and acquiring the land,” Gilvin said. “I think once we have the land, then we can identify revenue sources to make improvements. But if we don’t have funding available when opportunities arise, then those opportunities are gone forever.”

City officials are also considering a host of other projects the mayor has proposed for late-year funding. They include: • Pedestrian improvements at Marietta Street and Ga. 9 — This shovel-ready project includes installation of a Hawk Signal and provides other street modifications.

Price: $200,000.

• Hopewell Road and Vaughn Drive roundabout — Projected cost: $1.5 million.

• Lily Garden Extension — This is the design portion of a plan to connect with Cumming Street across Ga. 9.

Price $785,000.

• Restrooms at public parks — In all, four sites will be affected, including new facilities at the Big Creek Greenway trailheads at Haynes Bridge Road and at Marconi Drive, and upgraded facilities at Wacky World at Wills Park and at the quad in North Park. Total projected cost: $900,000.

• Converting the Town Green to artificial turf — Projected cost: $100,000.

• Renovation of athletic fields – Plan calls for renovating the fields at Innovation Academy for use by the city.

Projected cost: $250,000.

Roswell begins automated school zone speed limit enforcement ROSWELL, Ga. — On Feb. 3, the Roswell Police Department began a 30-day warning period to help drivers adjust to automated enforcement of school zone speed limits. The initial school zone cameras are installed in the Vickery Mill Elementary school zone on Ga. 9.

During the warning period, the city will mail warning notices to drivers. New signage alerting drivers of the increased enforcement have already been installed.

The program was instituted after a nationwide spike in pedestrian fatalities over the past decade, in which Georgia became one of the five deadliest states for pedestrians with the seventh highest fatality rate. Automated enforcement is endorsed as a safety tool by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, AAA, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Safety Council.

The Roswell program will target the most egregious speeders who exceed speed limits by more than 10 miles per hour. The speed cameras will operate from one hour before school until one hour after school, only on school days.

A sworn officer reviews and approves each citation before it is issued.

The new program will be fully operational and issuing citations on March 3.

Lunches for Learning expands program reach

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — For many students living in rural Honduras, it comes down to choosing between education or going hungry.

“Survival is what you’re focused on every day,” said Phil Dodson, executive director for Lunches for Learning.

As they grow older and become stronger, children are often tasked with searching or working for food, he said.

“Kids start dropping out,” Dodson said. “Of the kids who start kindergarten in Honduras, 30 percent of them will not make it to first grade. And another 30 percent drop out before second grade.

And the numbers just decline.”

Lunches for Learning works to break the cycle of poverty in rural Honduras by providing healthy lunches to students so they can complete their education.

Dodson joined others in the organization in a Jan. 23 talk at the Roswell Rotary Club meeting at Roswell Area Park.

Roswell Rotary Club itself is one of 40 sponsors for schools in Honduras through Lunches for Learning. The sponsorship provides each student with a free lunch each day for a year. Food is shipped to the schools to prepare. In some cases, Lunches for Learning helps build a basic kitchen for the school to prepare meals.

For some students, that one lunch is a lifeline. It may be the only meal of the day and may make the difference of whether or not they go to school that day.

“We provide lunches in school, and that’s it,” Dodson said. “In this part of the world, kids drop out of school to go look for food.”

That doesn’t mean the lunches are

a free handout, he added.

“They take so much pride in their community and their families,” Dodson said. “They’re so proud that these kids are able to remain in school.”

Lunches for Learning started in 2004 in Alabama by Ron Hicks when he saw the poverty first-hand during a visit to Central America. The organization has since expanded and is now based in Roswell.

Over the past year, Lunches for Learning grew by five sponsored schools, and its staff is prepared to do the same again this year, Dodson said.

Roswell considers illuminating Scott Road near Centennial

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Students walking along Scott Road to Centennial High School in near darkness could have some light shed on their situation if a new proposition before the city holds up.

The City Council discussed the possibility of creating a streetlight safety project for Scott Road at the Jan. 29 Community Development and Transportation Committee. Ultimately, the proposition was moved to a future committee meeting to discuss after city staff finalizes options, including funding, for the project.

The driving initiative behind the project is pedestrian safety, especially for students crossing the road.

“If any of you have been there at night or early in the morning, you know that it’s pitch black,” said Scott Brunner, city traffic engineer. “It’s completely dark. There’s no streetlights along the frontage of Centennial High.”

Brunner noted that there are five streetlights farther away along the western edge of Scott Road and one at the intersection of Eves Road, but not near Centennial High School where students frequently cross.

The initiative was brought to the city’s attention by a letter Police Chief James Conroy sent regarding public safety concerns along Centennial High School and Esther Jackson Elementary School.

Both schools are located on dimly lit, curved roads, Conroy stated in the letter.

And, Councilwoman Marie Willsey also noted that the wide lanes and relatively low traffic on Scott Road in particular

Roswell Citizens’ Police Academy registration opens ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Police Department is inviting Roswell residents and business owners to participate in the winter session of the Citizens’ Police Academy. The free program is designed to introduce members of the public to various functions of police work.

During the seven-week academy, participants will learn about the police department through a combination of classroom lectures, demonstrations and hands-on exercises. Students will receive instruction in the functions of the K9 unit, SWAT team, traffic enforcement

It can be a dangerous mix of conditions for pedestrians.

“Students are parking across the street and walking across five lanes of roadway in order to get to their school,” Conroy said. “Additional lighting would significantly improve safety for these students.”

If the project goes through, it would cost the city approximately $375,000 to install 28 streetlights along Scott Road and a portion of Eves Road. City staff has developed a two-phase concept for the project, in which the 14 most critical streetlights would be installed during the first phase.

No poles or underground infrastructure that the city could use for streetlighting currently exists at the location, Brunner said. The city would be starting from scratch.

Funding is currently not available for the project, but according to city staff, the city is expected to gain approximately $130,000 in savings at the end of this fiscal year from an earlier initiative to convert streetlights to LEDs. That money, Brunner said, could go toward the Scott Road Streetlight Safety Project.

Staff recommended using the savings to install at least five or six streetlights at the most critical crossing points as soon as possible to address the urgent safety need.

Councilman Marcelo Zapata asked city staff to look into the possibility of partnering with Fulton County Schools to share costs.

The City Council was supportive of the idea and instructed staff to look into the most financially feasible and timely options. and 911 Communications Center as well as learn how criminal cases are investigated.

Upon completion of the course, participants will take part in a graduation ceremony. The reception will be held Tuesday, March 31.

The Academy will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 18. Classes will be held every Tuesday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Roswell Police Department, 39 Hill St., Roswell.

Applicants must be 21 years or older, pass a background check and must be a Roswell resident or business owner.

Roswell breaks ground on Oxbo realignment project

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Relief is on the way for travelers around the Ga. 9 and Oxbo Road intersection, especially for those looking to turn left onto Oxbo Road.

Dozens of city staff and elected officials met at the intersection Jan. 27 to celebrate the official start of construction for the Oxbo realignment project. The goal is to eliminate the staggered intersection at Ga. 9 and convert the portion of Oxbo Road near Mimosa Boulevard into a twoway street. It will also provide new turning lanes on both Ga. 9 and Oxbo Road along with a new traffic signal.

“The project solves a list of safety and mobility problems,” said Director of Transportation Muhammad Rauf. “This intersection has been in the city’s top five high crash intersections for a very long time.”

One such upgrade is to convert Pleasant Hill Street into a two-way with a less steep incline. Other improvements include extending Elm Street to the intersection of Oxbo Road and Pleasant Hill Street.

“This connector street provides a desperately needed safe access point into the Mill Village area for the residents, business owners and visitors,” Rauf said.

There are no left-turn bays on Ga. 9 at Maple Street, Sloan Street or Mill Street. Because of the area’s historic resources, traditional widening and intersection improvements are not feasible at those three intersections, Rauf said.

cept first began in 2009 and is funded through the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax approved by voters in 2016. This is the city’s second TSPLOST project, behind Rucker Road improvements, that has begun construction.

The project’s total design cost comes in at $629,000 and its construction cost at $5.9 million. Construction is expected

The city partnered with design firm Clark Patterson Lee and contractor E.R. Snell for the project.

Annual homeless count highlights challenges of addressing poverty 2019 Point in Time Homelessness Findings

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY — Volunteers took to streets and shelters Jan. 23 to get a clearer picture of Fulton County’s homeless population.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires that local governments conduct this Point in Time count each year. The count provides communities with an understanding of the demographics of its homeless population — age, race, veteran status or history of mental illness — and determines how federal funds will be allocated.

“The purpose of it is to try to get as much data as possible around the issue of homelessness,” Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis said. “What does the homeless population look like? Is it families, children, adults, male, female?

So we can try to figure out the best ways to approach the challenges of homelessness as a community.”

The rate of homelessness in Fulton County dropped significantly between 2010 and 2018 but remained far higher than similarly sized communities, according to a county report. Fulton County is paradoxically one of the wealthiest in the nation, but it also ranks high in

Fulton County partners with nonprofits like North Fulton Community Charities, the Drake House, Home Stretch, Family Promise and Community Assistance Center to provide temporary housing and other services to families in crisis.

“Those organizations have done a good job working together to try to meet the needs that emerge from within the North Fulton footprint,” Ellis said. “I don’t think that the best solutions are going to come from a government entity attempting to work on its own. I think that’s it’s going to be something that’s in partnership with many organizations.”

Ellis said by volunteering for the count over the past few years, he’s gained a better understanding of the unique challenges of suburban homelessness.

“In North Fulton and suburban settings in general, the look and feel of it has trended to be families and older individuals, who often times have jobs yet find themselves in stretches of temporary homelessness,” Ellis said.

These individuals often are living out of a car and finding a public bathroom to clean up each day, which may be because there are not as many options for shelters in the suburbs, Ellis said.

Milton Business Council forms under regional chamber banner

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton Business Alliance is steering a new course under new leadership.

The group announced this month it will join forces with the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce to create the Milton Business Council.

The new entity falls under the umbrella of the GNFCC and will be managed by business leaders within the city.

The move to connect the two groups began last year when the Milton Business Alliance, which began as a volunteer organization in 2009, realized about half its members were also associated with the GNFCC. Leaders with the group decided the Milton Business Alliance could have a farther reach and could better support the city’s business community with the merger.

“I am extremely excited to work with Milton business owners and Milton city leaders to form a business council that creates real value for its members,” GNFCC President Kali Boatright said. “I am also humbled that MBA leadership is willing to put their 10-year history of good work into our trust. We are committed to the success of the Milton Business Council as we move into the new decade.”

John Herbert of Herbert Legal Group will serve as the first chairman of the Milton Business Council. Herbert, who has been a member of both organizations, said the Milton Business Alliance has done well over the last 10 years in its mission of promoting Milton businesses. He said he thinks the group can

“As a volunteer organization, we felt like [the MBA] had hit a turning point, and we took it as far as we could take it,” Herbert said. “We got to 100 members last year, and we felt like it needed an injection of a structured organization and key leadership, and that’s the opportunity we saw with the chamber. We thought it would be a great fit with our cheerleading [Milton businesses] and our

message, and the ability to amplify what we are able to do.”

Sharon Mays, chair of the former Milton Business Alliance, shared that sentiment.

“We believe the partnership with the GNFCC and the valuable leadership it provides will enable the Milton business community to move to the next level, offering our members more support and services,” Mays said.

The merger will allow Milton business

owners the opportunity to promote their companies across all of North Fulton County versus the limited confines of the city’s borders.

“What we are able to do through the chamber is provide a spotlight through the GNFCC on Milton and its businesses,” Herbert said. “We can use the GNFCC megaphone to talk about what’s going on in Milton.

Compared to the other larger cities under GNFCC’s umbrella — Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, Sandy Springs — Milton is unique in that only about 15 percent of the city is zoned commercial, and those areas are divided into three districts: Downtown Crabapple, Birmingham Crossroads and Deerfield Parkway. The Milton Business Council becomes the first group under the Greater North Fulton Chamber banner that will focus on a specific municipality. Herbert said the council is determined to show the parent organization that it is successful.

Still in its infancy, the council has already fostered a connection with the city, Herbert said.

“The city has been great supporters of ours,” he said, adding that both business organizations have close ties to the city.

“To me, it’s what will make this new organization work,” Herbert said.

As the business community grows in Milton, Herbert said he is looking forward to what the future holds for the council.

“We feel like the involvement of the Chamber and the concentrated base in the city of Milton is going to create a receptacle big enough to handle and enhance the growth of Milton businesses in the next 10 or 20 years,” he said.

“All three of my children are ELP graduates from 2017-2019. As high school juniors facing college decisions, ELP helped expand their understanding of our North Fulton community and its structure which helped guide their career interests. The contacts made with fellow students, parents and community leaders have already proven beneficial for each of them.”

Emerging Leaders (ELP) is a yearlong high school program for students who wish to develop leadership skills, identify and address community issues and interact with local leaders. Students will enjoy a combination of interactive lectures, discussions, site visits, community service, and networking opportunities.

Alpharetta continues to feed on its own success The sun came up today. Politicians are fighting. And Alpharetta is getting a new $50 million project.

Right on the heels of completion of its City-Center, and within months Geoff smith of completion of Assurance Financial, Avalon’s new ofgsmith@lendtheway.com fice tower, Greenstone Properties announced plans to start construction on a new six-story, 128,000-square-foot office building estimated at $50 million. The building will be on their property on the southwestern corner of Old Milton Parkway and Ga. 400, right across the street from Avalon and Alpharetta’s planned multiuse trail project called the Alpha-Loop.

One aspect that should not be taken lightly on this project is that it is what real estate professionals call a ‘spec’ project. That means they are starting construction without any tenants signed. While this has become a little more common intown Atlanta, it is very rare outside the perimeter. The developer, and the banks lending them the money to build the project (in this case Federal Capital Partners) have to have a strong confidence in an area to build a spec project there. And there seems to be plenty of confidence in Alpharetta these days.

He said that’s just not feasible.

The same goes for this spec, Class-A office building in Alpharetta. The confidence in the project is in place because if you are a company that needs to be in Class A office space, why wouldn’t you want to be within walking distance to Avalon? Or right off the exit of Ga. 400? Or right along a multi-use trail that takes riders and walkers 5 miles throughout the city from the new City Center, through Avalon and throughout the changing North Point Mall area?

Success breeds success. Alpharetta planted a flag back in the 1990s when Jim Cowart convinced local officials it was the right thing to do to build the first gated community in the metro area in Country Club of the South. That brought in CEOs who didn’t want to drive to downtown Atlanta, so they moved their offices to Alpharetta. Someone had the bright idea back then to line Winward Parkway with fiber-optic cable, making the desolate roadway the most connected roadway in

the country back then. That drew in data centers, regional headquarters and headquarters from across the country.

And on and on it goes. Now the uses are all playing off of each other, making each other more successful. With the new City Center, Alpharetta added a significant amount of retail. The thing about retail is that it needs customers to survive. So, all around the City Center are new residential developments that will supply customers on weeknights and on the weekends — and new office buildings that will supply customers on weekdays. The office-buildings are there because the retail provides a vibrant and fun atmosphere for employees to get to be in. Unemployment is low and businesses are doing everything they can to draw in top talent. Being located near an Avalon, or Alpharetta City Center, or the Beltline in Atlanta, give those businesses a huge advantage. A recent study showed that many of today’s employees are willing to take less money to be in an office that is in a walkable and vibrant environment. That’s good because that office space is getting more expensive.

A completion date has not yet been set for the new office project.

However, it is not too late to make resolutions to enhance your most valuable asset – your home!

According to data collected by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), an increasing number of homeowners are staying in the same residence for a longer period; therefore, it is important to understand which projects will make your home more functional and livable daily. These four resolutions will be well worth your investment by making your home more comfortable and valuable.

Start with the Basics The NAR compiled a report detailing the top return-on-investment projects

homeowners can complete for their property. A new roof, newly installed hardwood floors and refinished hardwood floors were the top three projects on the list, allowing at least a 100 percent recovered value. On top of renovating these foundational parts of your home, maintenance is also a key factor.

Check both your foundation and roof for cracks, settling or movement, and have an expert properly assess these areas to help prevent interior damage from leaks or weather elements. For hardwood floors, perform routine cleaning and clean spills immediately with a slightly damp cloth rather than a wet or steam mop, which will damage the finish over time. Long-term maintenance includes renewing and recoating your hardwood floors every three to five years, as well as sanding and refinishing them every few decades.

Increase Efficiency Save on your monthly utility bills by scheduling inspections and maintenance service calls for your HVAC system, plumbing and electricity. These inspections will ensure your systems are operating effectively and efficiently.

If costs are still high, you may need to add more insulation to your attic and

behind the walls, especially for the colder months.

Additionally, updating your electric panel and wiring will help you avoid possible electrical shocks and fires caused by short circuits or lightning. Plumbing systems occasionally leak and produce extra moisture, which can result in backups and other problems. Repair leaks and drips to allow drainage to work properly.

Freshen Up Another score calculated by the NAR’s report was a Joy Score, a number determined by the homeowners’ happiness after completing each renovation, for interior projects, which was based on a scale of one to 10. The projects with the highest three Joy Scores were a kitchen renovation (10), closet renovation (10) and full interior paint job (9.8).

If a kitchen or closet renovation sounds daunting and expensive, a change of paint is a basic, fairly cost-effective way to freshen up your home’s interior. Also,

simple changes in décor, such as throw pillows or rugs, can make your living spaces feel like new.

Give Your Landscaping a Makeover Weather permitting, you should give your lawn a makeover before the spring season arrives. Allow plants and flowers to blossom easily by laying fresh mulch as well as trimming dead branches from trees and shrubs. This will provide fresh, clear space for new life to flourish. Also, you should remove and replace any dead plants and consider enhancing your landscape with patio pavers and other outdoor additions.

Choosing the right material for your Exterior Shutters Shutters can make or break the curb appeal of a house and it is important to consider the different materials that shutters are made of. Prices will vary considerably between the different materials and each will have its own positives and negatives. Let’s take a look at the 4 main ones.

Wood: Very traditional and good looking. Could be pricey depending in the wood species that is used. Stay away from cheaper woods like Poplar or pine that will rot, twist and split within a short period of time. Good species are Western Red Cedar and Cypress. Make sure you add some sort of a cap to the top of the shutter to prevent splitting and make sure your provider seals the wood effectively to prevent rot. Easy to customize size and styles. Easy to repaint depending on the paint used, and special care should be taken to ensure the paint seals the product completely.

Vinyl: Cheapest option you can get, but then it will also look like that. The summer heat can play a trick on these where the shutters became brittle with color fading over time. These shutters are typically hollow and not very strong.

Its recommended that they are mounted flush against the wall, although some service providers sell hardware kits to mount them on hinges. Vinyl shutters are typically 3 times cheaper than wood or composites, but remember you’ll have to pay for installation 3 times. Limited options available for size, style and color.

Difficult to repaint effectively.

Composite Wood: Pricing is comparable to wood, and although you get the look and feel of wood, you don’t have the issues that comes using wood. No rotting, swelling, twisting and if it is the right material, no insect damage. There are different composite materials available and not all are rated for extended exterior use, so make sure your provider uses the right stuff (and can prove it).

Very long lasting and in some cases you even have environmentally friendly/safe options available. Easy to customize and a good provider should be able to create unique designs and styles perfect for your home. Similar to wood it will need repainting in a few years, but generally easy to do. Can be mounted on hinges or direct to the wall.

PVC: Pricey, so shop around. This stuff will last almost forever and moisture have no effect on it. Heat does play a role and it’s prone to cupping, bending and warping, so make sure your provider adds some form of additional strengthening. Seems that the indus-

try standard is to add metal bracing on the back to prevent some of the issues.

GDOT calls for public comment on I-285 express lanes project

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Transportation is wrapping up a series of public meetings for input on its plans to bring 18 miles of express lanes to the top end of I-285.

The project, originally estimated at $5 billion, would build barrier-separated express lanes in each direction along I-285 from Paces Ferry Road on the west to Henderson Road on the east, with connections to I-75, Ga. 400 and I-85.

Express lanes would also be built on Ga. 400 from south of Glenridge Connector to the North Springs MARTA Station.

GDOT held a series of public information meetings in January and will accept feedback online at majormobilityga.com/ projects/topend/ until Tuesday, Feb. 25.

GDOT says the express lanes will reduce commuter delay by more than 6,000 hours each day and provide more reliable trip times. GDOT officials point to the success of its existing express lanes on I-85 and I-75.

In its first year, the Northwest Corridor in Cobb County saw its rush hour period decrease by one hour in the morning and evening, according to GDOT reports. Travel times are 20

percent faster for the 27,000 trips in the express lanes each day. Drivers in the traditional lanes see a benefit too, with travel speeds up to 20 miles per hour faster than before the express lanes.

The impact of the I-285 express lanes could be even greater because they’ll run both ways, GDOT Communications Director Scott Higley said.

Preparing for population growth The express lanes are needed not only to relieve existing traffic but to prepare for the region’s future, Higley said.

The metro area’s population is expected to grow by 2.4 million over the next 20 years, according to estimates from the Atlanta Regional Commission.

“If we build more lanes, they just fill up,” Higley said. “We’ve done that for decades. and you just end up with a wider traffic jam.”

By setting pricing based on demand and allowing bus riders and approved vanpools to use the express lanes for free, the project will encourage people to think differently about their commute, he said.

This enthusiasm for the project is not shared by all. A Change.org petition opposing the project has garnered 1,400 signatures, including Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch and City Council mem-

“I would like to see the whole 285 Managed Lane Project reevaluated for effectiveness and value added,” Deutsch said in a recent statement. “I believe that there are better strategies to reduce traffic congestion on the Top End. There is a huge need to mitigate the impacts this project is going to have on the communities abutting the interstate.”

Residents near the project have raised concerns about noise, air pollution and property taxes. Dunwoody’s Georgetown community, just north of the highway, could be heavily impacted.

In response to concerns, GDOT has promised to evaluate noise barriers as part of the project. As the environmental field work and roadway design moves forward, nearby property owners and renters will be notified of the opportunity to participate in noise barrier discussions.

Higley also emphasized GDOT only exercises eminent domain after exhausting all other remedies to settle with property owners.

Another common criticism of the express lane project comes from those who would rather see the money go to public transit or would like to see the designs incorporate bus rapid transit (BRT).

Higley noted GDOT’s hands are somewhat tied by the state constitution, which does not permit gas tax revenue to be spent on transit, and that the express lanes will benefit transit riders, as buses will enjoy the benefits of faster travel times.

State Sen. Sally Harrel, speaking before the Dunwoody Homeowners Association on Jan. 26, said she was unhappy with the express lane project and would be looking into a constitutional amendment to unlock transit funding.

“The more I see it, the more I don’t like it,” Harrel said. “Granted, we have got to do something. The reason we’re going with toll lanes is because … by the Georgia Constitution, GDOT cannot spend money on transit, so I will be filing a bill for a constitutional amendment to change that, because I believe our Georgia Constitution is holding us back.”

Harrell acknowledged it probably will not happen this year but said it was time to start the conversation.

Project timeline pushed back The Top End Express Lanes Project is still in the early conceptual stage.

GDOT recently announced it would be pushing back the timeline by a few years and splitting up construction into separate projects.

Before construction of the express lanes, GDOT plans to complete three smaller projects: adding westbound collector lanes between Chamblee Dunwoody Road and Ashford Dunwoody Road, changes to the interchange of I-285 and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and extending the auxiliary lane between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive.

These projects would be completed between 2021 and 2024 and lay the groundwork for the express lanes. The east segment of the express lanes, from Ga. 400 to south of I-85, is slated to go to construction in 2023 and open to traffic in 2028. The west half would begin construction in 2026 and open in 2032, according to the latest timeline.

Current plans place two lanes in both directions between I-75 and I-85 with single lanes on either end. GDOT is in the process of determining where the access points will be located along the route.

The $11 billion Major Mobility Investment Program, which includes the I-285 Top End Express Lanes, is a separate project from Transform 285/400. The Transform project is focused on the interchange at I-285 and Ga. 400, including new flyover ramps, new collector lanes, bridge reconstructions and a new diverging diamond interchange at Abernathy Road.

Transform 285/400 began construction in February 2017 and is slated for completion late this year.

The festival was held Jan. 17-19 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. The Junior Theater Festival Atlanta united 7,000 students and educators from 128 educational musical theater groups representing 31 states, as well as Australia, New Zealand and the U.K. Mill Springs Academy’s Warner Jones and Calista Craig; Off Broadway Children›s Theatre’s Noah Squires and Maddie Dupree; Northwestern Middle School’s Justin Mikels and Valeria Calderon, CYT Atlanta’s Will Jordan and Wesley Engstrom, and Forefront Arts’ Avery Britt and Cady Walls, were named to the Junior Theater Festival All-Stars.

ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Fire Department was recently awarded the 2020 Car Seat Mini-Grant by the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Injury Prevention Program.

Through the mini-grant, Roswell Fire and Safe Kids North Fulton work together to provide car seats and education to financially eligible families in Fulton County. The program is funded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to help ensure Georgia’s children are safe while riding in motor vehicles.

Since 2007, the education, car seats and booster seats provided through the mini-grant prevented serious injury or death and saved over 300 of Georgia’s children who were involved in crashes.

Safe Kids North Fulton educates parents and caregivers on how to properly install and use car seats, offer car seat inspections and provide car seats and booster seats to financially eligible families.

Homeless: Continued from Page 11 “They’re working, they’re sending their kids to school, but for a variety of reasons — whether its loss of job, break up of marriage, a health issue — they’ve found themselves in a temporary state of homelessness,” Ellis said.

Though families experiencing temporary homelessness is more common in the suburbs, Ellis said he also sees examples of chronic homelessness, usually related to a chronic mental illness or substance abuse.

“Homelessness is a complex topic,” Ellis said. “People find themselves in situations of homelessness for many different reasons. There’s definitely not a one-size-fitsall solution to eliminate homelessness.”

This year, Fulton County will take the first step on a project that could address chronic homelessness in a big way, Ellis said.

Charities group offers free tax prep, filing assistance ROSWELL, Ga. — North Fulton Community Charities is partnering with the Internal Revenue Service and United Way to bring the Volunteer Income Tax program to North Fulton.

The program provides free tax preparation and filing assistance to families with moderate-to-low incomes. Taxes are prepared in-person by IRS trained and certified volunteers. NFCC is currently booking appointments for the free service. Appointments begin the first week of February and run through April 15. Visit nfcchelp.org to book an appointment.

“One thing we have lacked as a county is a place outside our jail setting for a person with mental health challenges that are manifesting in behavior that is lawbreaking or highly disruptive,” Ellis said. “If they wind up in a jail setting, many times it just causes the problem to get worse.

While we’re trying to deliver behavioral health services within that setting, it’s not what it’s designed for.”

As part of the 2020 budget, the county will spend $275,000 on a behavioral health comprehensive plan, which will include a feasibility study for constructing a crisis stabilization center. The goal of crisis centers is to provide emergency support for individuals experiencing mental illness or substance abuse and divert them from incarceration.

Milton boys enter postseason as top seed with 21-4 record

By ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com The Milton boys basketball team entered the 2019-20 season with some of the highest expectations surrounding the program in recent history. The season isn’t over yet, but by most measures, the Eagles have lived up to those expectations.

The Eagles wrapped up the regular season with a 21-4 record overall, going undefeated in region play and losing only one game to an in-state team, Grayson, the consensus No. 1 team in the state and one of the top 10 teams in the country.

The Eagles played Grayson in the second game of the season and lost by one point.

“For us playing a team of that caliber that early in the season, and honestly we were up double digits most of that game, it gave us a lot of confidence,” Milton head coach Allen Whitehart said. “We discussed that throughout the season that we feel like we can play with anybody. We discussed that we only had one loss in-state and the other three were out-of-state. We have a lot of stuff to work on, but we have a lot of confidence as we go into this playoff run.”

Other than the loss to Grayson, the Eagles fell to teams from New York, Kentucky and Ohio. They defeated teams from Wisconsin, Alabama, North Carolina along with in-state basketball powerhouses Kell and Wheeler.

The Eagles undoubtedly impressed in their non-region schedule, but the record they compiled within Region 5-7A carries much more significance for their postseason hopes.

Milton went 10-0 against region opponents during the regular season, winning by an average of 17.9 points per game.

“As we were goal-setting going into

the season, [going undefeated in region play] was one of our goals,” Whitehart said. “We talked about it going into the game, and we talked about it after. It’s a good sign for us to take care of business within the region.”

Several Milton players were recognized for their standout play during the season with the recent announcement of the 2019-20 AllRegion team.

Sophomore guard Bruce Thornton earned Region Player of the Year honors, as announced by the region’s coaches on Feb. 1, and three other Eagles made the All-Region team, senior Evan Hurst and freshmen Kanaan Carlyle and L.T. Overton.

When the Region 5-7A tournament tips off this week at Forsyth Central, the top-seeded Eagles will be resting at home. As the top team in the region, Milton earned a bye during the first round of the region tournament and has technically guaranteed its spot in the state tournament.

The Eagles open up play in the semifinals of the region tournament on Feb. 5 against the winner of the No. 4 seed West Forsyth and the No. 5 seed Forsyth Central. If Milton wins, it would move on to the region championship game on Friday, Feb. 7.

Because the top four teams in the Region 5-7A Tournament advance to the 7A state tournament, the Eagles are guaranteed to make it into the state tournament.

Still, the Eagles still have plenty to play for in the region tournament.

Besides bragging rights, their finish will determine their seeding for the state tournament. A top finish would give them a high seeding in the state tournament.

By ZACH SHUGAN news@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Blessed Trinity boys basketball outclassed West Hall in its final game of the regular season, although the match was a tale of two halves.

After an evenly matched first quarter, Blessed Trinity held a 17-14 lead, but West Hall’s bench caught fire in the second to give the Spartans a 30-27 lead at the half.

Blessed Trinity came out of the locker room and looked like an entirely different team in the second half. The Titans began the third quarter on a 23-2 run and outscored the Spartans 44-15 in the second half.

“We’re a team right now that has peaks and valleys,” Blessed Trinity head coach Mark Moses said. “It’s an intensity thing, and that was the difference in the second half. We clamped down in the second half. We didn’t make any adjustments with what we did, really.”

Senior Justin Zimmer led BT’s offense early with 11 points in the first quarter on senior night. But it was the lone nonsenior in the starting lineup who stole the show in the second half. Junior point guard Jax Bouknight led all scorers in the game with 22 points, 10 coming during the Titans’ explosive third quarter.

“He’s really good,” Moses said. “He’s our offense. He’s averaging about 19 points per game for us. And when he gets motivated to play defense, that’s when you have to watch out.”

The Titans erased West Hall’s lead in the third to take a commanding 53-35 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

All momentum belonged to the home team at that point, and the Titans made sure they kept it that way.

The Zimmer twins combined for 25

points, with Justin scoring 19 and Joseph netting six. Senior forward James Bryant added 11 points and pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.

Blessed Trinity’s win improves their record 15-8 overall and 10-2 in region play, ensuring them the No. 2 seed in the Region 7-AAAA tournament. Both of the Titans’ region losses came against No. 1 Denmark, who finished undefeated in region play.

But the team that took the floor Friday night for the Titans is a vastly different one than what was seen earlier this season. Bouknight has returned from a concussion that sidelined him in the beginning of the season, and Bryant returned from his duties on the Titans state-champion football team in late December.

Before they reach a possible rematch with the Danes, Blessed Trinity will have to get past a couple of opponents. The Titans take on Flowery Branch (0-23, 0-12) in the first round of the region tournament.

“We’ve just been focused on defense and getting stops,” Moses said. “We’re trying to keep teams in the 40s and be in the 50s on offense. Like I said, we’re a peaks and valleys team. If we’re in the valley, it’s going to be a tough game. If we can peak and stay there, I like our chances.”

GIRLS: BLESSED TRINITY 51, WEST HALL 40 The Blessed Trinity and West Hall girls got off to a fast start, but neither had much offensive success. Both teams started the game in a full-court press, resulting in a fast-paced first quarter with plenty of turnovers.

Boys Region 7-6A basketball tournament preview

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The boys Region 7-AAAAAA tournament tips off this week at Chattahoochee. Nine teams will vie for the region title, and the top four teams will earn berths in the state tournament.

No. 1 Chattahoochee Chattahoochee compiled another strong regular season to capture the No. 1 seed with a 13-3 record against region opponents. The Cougars are the only 7-AAAAAA team to carry a top-10 ranking in Class 6A entering the tournament.

Junior AJ White and senior Region Player of the Year Cameron Sheffield continued to lead Hooch offensively this season. Both guards have strong outside shooting, and 6-foot-6 Sheffield is a formidable presence in the paint.

The Cougars enter the tournament averaging 67 points per game in region play and were second in fewest points allowed.

Hooch’s three regular season region losses were all by fewer than seven points.

Chattahoochee could be poised to reach its first region tournament finals since the 2012-13 season, falling just

short last year with a 72-70 loss to North Atlanta in the semifinals.

Hooch will be chasing its first region title since the 2011-12 season.

In earning the No. 1 seed, the Cougars have an automatic bid to the state tournament. They will take on the winner of No. 4 Johns Creek and No. 5 Centennial in the semifinals.

No. 3 Cambridge Defending 7-AAAAAA champion Cambridge remained among the region’s top teams this year despite losing a talented senior class following the 2018-19 season. With new talent emerging this year, the Bears have continued the program’s rise to prominence from a bottom-dweller to championship contender. Cambridge compiled an 11-5 region record in the regular season for the No. 3 seed.

The Bears closed out their regular season Jan. 28 with a 68-50 loss to No. 1 seed Chattahoochee.

The Bears have focused on playing better defensive this year, and it has paid off with the team entering the tournament having allowed the fewest points in 7-AAAAAA play. Cambridge has beaten its opponents by an average of 20

points per game in their region wins.

The team has seen significant contributions from several players, with senior forward Sola Adebisi, senior wing E.J. Smith, senior guard Cole Bearden and junior guard Davis Sager leading the way.

A year after earning the program’s first region title, the Bears will look to repeat as champs this week.

Cambridge takes on the winner of No. 6 North Atlanta vs. No. 9 Dunwoody.

The Bears and North Atlanta met in the last two 7-AAAAAA tournament finals, splitting the series.

No. 4 Johns Creek Johns Creek is already enjoying one if its best seasons in program history and will look to make some noise in the 7-AAAAAA tournament.

The Gladiators compiled a 16-8 overall regular season record and enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed with 10 wins in region play.

Region 7-6A girls basketball tournament preview

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The girls Region 7-AAAAAA tournament tips off this week at Chattahoochee. Nine teams will vie for the region title, and the top four teams will earn berths in the state tournament.

The top four seeds for the region tournament were all decided on tiebreakers. Alpharetta and Cambridge tied for the top spot, while Johns Creek and Pope tied for third.

No. 1 Alpharetta The Raiders needed no adjustment

period under first-year head coach Rickey Jordan or the loss of significant players to graduation. Alpharetta charged to a 14-2 region record in the regular season.

The Raiders have one of the region’s top-scoring offenses led by a trio of underclassmen. Sophomores Jodi Goins and Simone Lett each average over 11 points scoring, with Njeri Lewis and junior Mary Grace Durham each netting eight per contest. Goins also leads the team in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks per game.

Alpharetta and Cambridge jostled for the lead in the region standings much of

the year, split their regular season matchups, and each finished at 14-2 in region play. The Raiders earned the No. 1 seed through the third tiebreaker, the number of region road wins in the regular season.

The Raiders will open against the winner of No. 8 Chattahoochee and No. 9 Northview.

If Alpharetta earns a state tournament berth, they will look to end their streak of three straight losses in the opening round.

No. 2 Cambridge Cambridge has already had its best season in program history, and the

Bears hope to continue their success with a run in the region tournament and a berth in the state playoffs.

The Bears compiled a 14-2 region record to secure the No. 2 seed, their only losses coming to two of the region’s top teams, Johns Creek and Alpharetta.

Cambridge has the second highest scoring offense behind Pope in regular season games and averaged 57 points a contest. Much of that offense has been generated by standout freshman Jordynn Dudley, with several other players, including sophomore Angelina Confran-

If the Gladiators are to capture the program’s first region title, their defensive play will need to improve. Only Dunwoody and Centennial allowed more points in region play during the regular season.

At the very least, Johns Creek will look to earn the program’s first playoff bid since the 2015-16 season by placing among the top four teams in the region tournament. The Gladiators open play against No. 5 Centennial with a berth in the state tourney on the line. With a win, Johns Creek could then pursue its first-ever win in the state playoffs.

No. 5 Centennial Centennial is looking to end its state tournament appearance drought this week. The Knights enter the tournament with a 9-7 mark against its 7-AAAAAA foes in the regular season. They tied with North Atlanta for the No. 5 seed

and won tiebreakers.

The Knights’ balanced offense and defense has been led by guards Mansir Williamson, Logan Turner, Kaleb Jordan and forward Julian Nixon. Centennial was fifth in points per game and seventh in points allowed during regular season region games.

Though they enter the region tournament in the middle of the pack, the team has shown it can down top opponents.

Centennial took down Chattahoochee 89-85 in overtime Jan. 10.

The Knights take on Johns Creek to open the tournament. Centennial dropped its two regular season matchups with the Gladiators, including a tight, 75-71 loss on Jan. 31 in the regular season finale.

No. 7 Northview Northview has been competitive in region play despite their 5-11 record, but those close losses have relegated the team to the No. 7 seed. Five of Northview’s region losses have been by eight points or fewer.

However, the Titans are entering the postseason on a high note. Northview held Johns Creek’s high-caliber offense to 50 points Jan. 28 to down the Gladiators 54-50 before closing out the regular

season with an 18-point win over Dunwoody.

The Titans have been led by sophomore guard Ivoryon Cuffee and senior guards Eric Hattings and Jaylen Stewart. The trio combined for 45 of Northview’s 54 points in the team’s 54-50 win over North Atlanta Jan. 21.

Northview is seeking its first region tournament win since the 2011-12 season and face No. 8 Alpharetta in the first round. The teams split their regular season meetings with Northview winning 70-57 on Dec. 6 and Alpharetta taking the Jan. 17 matchup, 60-50.

No. 8 Alpharetta With several new starters, Alpharetta has had its frustrations this season.

But, the Raiders will look to shed those troubles this week.

Led offensively by 6-foot-5 senior guard Jayden Stephens, the Raiders averaged 56 points per game and 62 allowed per game in regular season region play.

Despite just three wins against 7-AAAAAA opponents, the Raiders have been competitive in most of their region tilts. Eight of the Raiders’ 13 losses have

been by eight points or fewer, including both of their matchups with No. 1 seed Chattahoochee.

The Raiders take on No. 7 Northview in the first round after the teams split their regular season meetings.

Alpharetta will need two wins to return to the state tournament after its seven-season streak of earning a state berth ended last season.

No. 9 Dunwoody If Dunwoody is to win a region game this season, it will have to be in the 7-AAAAAA tournament. The Wildcats went 1-21 overall in the regular season, including 16 losses in region play.

The Wildcats enter the tournament averaging a region-low 50 points per game and are last in points allowed in 7-AAAAAA play.

Dunwoody has not won a region tournament game since finishing as the 7-AAAAAA tournament runner-up in the 2016-17 season. The Wildcats will look to end that streak when they take on No. 6 North Atlanta in the first round of the tournament.

North Atlanta won both regular season matchups, 68-42 and 60-53.

The Bears will be seeking the program’s first region title this week, a year after the boy’s program won its first.

Cambridge will take on No. 7 North Atlanta in the first round. The Bears won the regular season matchups between the teams, 54-30 and 62-23.

Cambridge is chasing its first appearance in the state tournament.

No. 4 Johns Creek After a strong regular season, the Gladiators enter the region tournament with a 12-4 mark against region opponents and a three-game win streak. The Gladiators tied with Pope in the final region standings, but the Greyhounds took the No. 3 seed through tiebreakers.

The Gladiators have been led offensively by guards Ahmia Childs and Carson Tanguilig, with significant contributions from Kate Powers, Samantha Breslow and Jillian Davis. Johns Creek averaged 55 points per game against region opponents.

Johns Creek had a challenging slate of games in the final weeks of the

regular season that included matchups with Pope, Alpharetta and Cambridge.

Though the Gladiators took the opening games of their regular season matchups with Pope and Cambridge, both squads beat Johns Creek in the second meeting, and Alpharetta swept its season series over the Gladiators.

Those results put Johns Creek in a third-place tie with Pope after the regular season finale.

Johns Creek earned its first state tournament berth in the 2017-18 season and returned last year under fourth-year head coach Kirk Call. In both seasons the Gladiators were the No. 4 seed from the region.

Johns Creek opens against No. 5 Dunwoody and will secure a state tournament berth with a win. The Gladiators won both regular season games between the teams.

No. 5 Dunwoody Dunwoody (11-10, 8-8) hopes to end a decade’s long streak of missing out on the state tournament this week. The Wildcats enter the 7-AAAAAA bracket as the No. 5 seed.

The team been led on both sides of the court by senior guard Adrien Lawrence, who averages 14 points per game.

She also leads the team in rebounds and steals. Jordan Strozier, a 6-foot-2 center, is a formidable presence in the paint and averages two blocks per game, while sophomore Gabby Litvak is one of the region’s top three-point scorers.

Dunwoody enters the tournament with three wins in their final five games.

The Wildcats were swept by the region’s leading teams but notched 2-0 records against Centennial, North Atlanta, Chattahoochee and Northview.

Dunwoody will battle Johns Creek in the opening round. The Wildcats dropped both regular season meetings between the teams, 51-46 and 53-37.

No. 6 Centennial Centennial will look to break away from the middle of the pack in the region tournament and secure its first postseason trip since the 2015-16 season.

The Knights enter the tournament after a challenging slate of games to close out their regular season. After dropping a 39-37 heartbreaker to region leaders Alpharetta, the Knights took down North Atlanta but fell to Pope and Johns Creek in lopsided affairs.

Centennial has been without standout Divine Guthrie for much of the season due to injury, but seniors Bailey Hebermehl and Grace Dulion and junior Amina Akosa have contributed significantly.

Centennial was sixth in scoring average per game against region opponents (34) and sixth in average points allowed (42).

The Knights take on Pope in the first round of the tournament with a berth in the state tourney at stake. The teams met three times this season, twice in region play and in a holiday tournament.

No. 8 Chattahoochee Tournament hosts Chattahoochee (321, 2-14) notched just two region wins in the regular season, both against Northview.

The Cougars, under first year head coach Lorenzo Withrite, began the season with a non-region win against Berkmar but have since fallen on hard times.

Hooch has played Centennial close this season, losing the two matchups by a combined seven points, but the Cougars dropped their other 12 region games by at least 10 points.

The Cougars will be seeking their first region tournament win since 2017 when they take on Northview in the opening round. The winner of that contests faces No. 1 seed Alpharetta.

No. 9 Northview It is not looking promising that threetime defending 7-6A champs Northview will raise the region title trophy again this season. The Titans enter the tournament 0-16 against region opponents in the regular season and with just one victory overall against Lassiter, another team with a lone win.

After losing a talented core of players to graduation or transfers and former head coach Chris Yarbrough leaving the program, the Titans have struggled with an all-new lineup and a new head coach in Michael Martin.

Gatorade names Blessed Trinity athlete Girls Runner of the Year

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Blessed Trinity junior Hannah Miniutti added to her list of accomplishments Jan. 27 when she was named the 2019-20 Gatorade Girls Cross-Country Runner of the Year, earning her the designation as the top female runner in the state for the athletic year.

“I never expected it, and it’s really special to me,” Miniutti said. “I’ve been doing everything I can possible to be the best runner I can be, and getting to run with these incredible people around me has pushed me to my limits. In Georgia, there are so many incredible runners, and it’s cool to have those people around me pushing me every race.”

After struggling with injuries the last two years, Miniutti is now back to full strength, and her Gatorade Runner of the Year award adds to her growing list of accolades over the last few months.

In December, she was named the girls Runner of the Year by the Atlanta Track Club. She also paced the field in the 2019 GHSA cross-country state championship meet to capture the girls Class 4A state championship in November. Her state meet time of 18:51.49 bested the previous BT girls program record by over 34 seconds.

She also took the top spot in the Region 7-AAAA championship meet and the Meet of Champions Tournament.

Miniutti was the only girls runner from Georgia to compete at the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Region championships where she finished 7th overall with a personal record of 17:46.7.

That result allowed the BT standout to qualify for the Nike Nationals in December where she placed 75th out of the country’s top 201 girls runners.

“Competing at nationals was so special, I never could have seen myself getting there at the beginning of the season,” Miniutti said. “I had watched YouTube videos of people talking about their experience at nationals, I thought how much of a dream it would be to compete there.”

As the cross-country season progressed, Minuitti’s coach said she could potentially qualify for nationals. While she believed that might not be a strong possibility until next season, as the year went on she saw her goal of reaching the pinnacle of high school girls cross-country become a reality.

“The experience was unreal,” she said.

“They go all-out for the athletes. I got to meet so many new people and connections in the running world, and it is inspiring to have those runners by you.”

Mr. Estrada was born in Sapporp, Japan to his parents, Thomas and Joan Lowe Estrada, Sr. Mr. Estrada worked as Communication Coordinator for Cobb County, he served his country honorably and faithfully in the United States Navy. Blessed Trinity junior Hannah Miniutti

For all her success, Miniutti is quick to thank Greg Johnson, the Blessed Trinity girls cross-country head coach, and the support from her teammates.

“Being with Blessed Trinity has been absolutely incredible,” she said. “Coach Greg Johnson is the best coach I could

ever ask for. He cares so much for the runners, and he focuses on individualism and creating a training set for one person that is best for them. And my teammates and I always push each other. They are sisters to me. I couldn’t be more thankful to have that atmosphere.”

Miniutti will now turn her attention to track and field where she competes in the 1600- and 3200-meter races. She will also continue to seek out a program to join at the collegiate level. She has had unofficial visits to Georgia Tech and Georgia and will soon visit Furman University. A focus for the junior will be finding a program where she feels like a part of a second family, which is how she feels at Blessed Trinity, she said.

In winning the Gatorade award, Miniutti can bestow a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of her choosing. She is also now in the running for the Gatorade National Girls Cross-Country Runner of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.

Miniutti is the third North Fulton female athlete to earn the award in recent years. Lindsay Billings of Northview took the 2015-16 award, and Fellowship Christian’s Emma Grace Hurley was named runner of the year for the 201415 season.

Titans: Continued from Page 28 Blessed Trinity’s offense began finding its groove in the second quarter, and the Titans ended up taking the lead before halftime. Titans senior Erin Hynekamp led all scorers with 7 points, and junior Emma Jacobs finished with 10 rebounds in the half.

The Titans extended their lead after halftime with a 22-point third quarter.

Hynekamp, the lone senior on their roster, put on a show on senior night. The lefty couldn’t seem to miss, scoring 14 points off seven baskets in the third period.

The Titans led 39-26 after three quarters, and they were able to hold on to the lead in the fourth to earn a victory in their regular season finale.

Hynekamp put the finishing touch on her senior night with a few rebounds in the fourth to finish with a double-double

(23 points and 10 rebounds). Jacobs finished the game with nine points and 15 rebounds.

“It was great for Erin to step up and play big for her team,” Blessed Trinity head coach Tim Rountree said. “Being our lone senior, this was her moment to shine tonight. She really stepped up as a leader and captain and played tremendous for us. I’m just so proud of her. To get a win on senior night in her last time playing in Titans gymnasium, we’re really happy for her.”

For Blessed Trinity, the win over West Hall could end up improving their seed in the region tournament.

The Titans finished 8-15 overall and compiled a 3-9 record in region play, tied with Denmark. A tiebreaker, which Rountree said might end up being a coin toss, will determine who gets the fifth seed and who gets the sixth seed. West Hall finished winless in region play and will be the seventh and lowest seed in the upcoming region tournament.

Already, this season has been one that Whitehart and Milton likely won’t forget any time soon.

“This group’s just a fun group to coach,” Whitehart said. “It’s fun to come to practice every day. When you talk to wins, there’s that culture of comradery. And we definitely have that. I think that’s a big part of our success is the fact that they play for each other.”
