Before I say another word about this year’s Best of North Atlanta results, I first want to take the opportunity to extend a hearty congrats to the entire business community for not only bouncing back from a COVID economy, but thriving in the time since.

I suspect one of the reasons is that we all learned how to dig a little deeper to make ends meet. We all had to figure out new and creative ways to meet our customers where they are, engage with our staff, and work efficiently to deal with supply chain interruptions and limited resources.

Perhaps one challenge that proved particularly difficult was continuing to deliver a level and quality of product/ service that our customers had come to expect in a busi ness environment where that was sometimes near impossible. This meant that we witnessed businesses reinvent themselves on the fly. I suspect that for many of them, they made structural changes to their businesses they’d been putting off for years but were now essential to staying open. We learned what had to get done immediately, and what could wait another day.

We retained many of those lessons learned, even when we no longer needed to use them, and for that I believe our business community is stronger and bet ter.

It is certainly more resilient.

Now, onto the results. After 107,000(!) votes were cast in this year’s con test, we are thrilled to present the winners in this week’s editions of our Herald newspapers.

To our winners, take pride in this great accomplishment. There is no higher praise than willingness of a customer to go online and cast a vote to hopefully help you win your category. Many posted links to their social media accounts, emailed their friends and family asking them to support you, and returned mul tiple times to the ballot to maximize their impact on the results! You’ve got a lot of fans out there.

We hope to celebrate each of you in person at the awards gala in October –the first time we’ve been able to host the event in three years. It is going to be a lot of fun, and we hope you take the opportunity to enjoy yourself, take a break, and appreciate your accomplishments.

A father and son story

The Six Bridges story starts with a father-son dream of teaming up to own and operate a craft brewery, determined to create world-class brews that everyone can enjoy.

Charles (the father) is a Georgia Tech Chemical Engineering graduate, whose love for beer started in the foothills of Colorado. Brewing beer is right in the wheelhouse of chemical engineers, so it was a natural fit. He learned to brew beer at home while he kept his day job and was thrilled when his son also took up home brewing.

An Atlanta-area native, Clay followed in

his dad’s footsteps, but not as an engineer. He moved to Colorado to be a ski bum by day and an adventurist by night, includ ing learning the art and science of brewing beer. Clay moved back to north Georgia and became a firefighter, enamored by the smoke jumpers he met out west. He also honed his skills in brewing beer.

When the time came, both father and son threw caution to the wind, and com mitted to fulfilling the dream, an effort of love and passion. Each day starts with a challenge and ends with a reward. Here we are living the dream, the first craft brewery in Johns Creek, GA, and now a second location in Crabapple.

As in years past, I decided to sit down with Dr. Brent Tay lor to get his take on his success and to learn a bit more about him.

Alyssa: Hey Dr. Taylor! Thanks for meeting with me again. Winning the Best Dermatologist and Best Vein specialist for five years in a row means you must be doing something right! In the past, we have discussed some of your personal interests, but this year I thought we would hear some more anecdotes about your professional lives, experiences and accomplishments. First off, do you have a patient care moment or a diagnosis of which you are exceptionally proud?

Dr. Taylor: Thank you! It is abso lutely our goal to deliver outstanding dermatologic care. Regarding diagnoses that I’m proud of, the first instances that come to mind involve catching a disease that is technically outside my specialty. For example, a patient looked a bit yel low, and I ordered a liver function test and caught acute liver failure. I helped another patient discover that one of his ureters had been accidentally cut during a surgery at the hospital.

Within my own specialty I’m often most proud of how simply being thorough can be critical to a patient’s care. By be ing thorough, I have caught melanomas on the scalp and bottom of the feet of patients who were sometimes surprised I asked them to take out a hair tie or take their socks off. Likewise, photography helps us monitor moles for change, and just last month we caught a melanoma early because a slight change from a pre vious photo prompted an early biopsy.

Alyssa: Do you have any uncomfort able or funny moments you’ve experi enced during training that you’re willing to share?

Dr. Taylor: When I was training dur ing my fellowship in San Diego, a patient brought his pet horned lizard to sit in his shirt pocket during surgery. He told me not to make it feel threatened or it would shoot blood at me from its eyes. I looked it up later. Sure enough, that is one of the horned lizard’s self-defense tactics!

Alyssa: Has a patient or teacher or

coworker ever asked you out on a date?

Dr. Taylor: (Laughs) Yes they have. Sadly, the number of patients in their 90s who have asked me on a date is higher than the number of non-patients who ever asked me on a date before I was married.

Alyssa: Is there a funny medical fact that you have learned?

Dr. Taylor: Actually I have a good one! An ENT professor in medical school told us that as men age they lose the ability to hear higher pitch sounds, and, as women age, their voices increase in pitch. Thus, men naturally lose the ability to hear women with time. So the next time your wife accuses you of ignoring her: blame biology, not the football game!

Alyssa: Do you have a pet peeve of which patients or staff are guilty?

Dr. Taylor: I really don’t get frus trated easily. I understand that every one has a life and everyone’s lives have struggles about which we often know little. If someone is being rude, I usu ally chalk it up to unseen struggles. That being said, I do wish that certain patients would realize what a marvel Mohs surgery really is. My primary pet peeve is patients mistreating my cowork ers. Sometimes, patients get frustrated waiting on their tissue to process during a day of Mohs surgery. And they some times take it out on my medical assis tants, who are wonderful and caring and are in healthcare for the right reasons.

There is a comedian who has a bit on youtube called “everything’s amazing and nobody’s happy.” He talks about how upset people get on airplanes when just a few hundred years ago a trip across the country was like the video game Oregon Trail – the journey took months, and half of the wagon party died of cholera on the way. Like air travel, skin cancer treatment nowadays is miraculous. Prior to Mohs surgery, far more skin cancers routinely caused disfigurement and even death. Now, Mohs surgery offers a cure rate of 99% for most skin cancers, and the aesthetic results are often outstanding. Mod ern skin cancer care truly is fantastic. Unfortunately, the same day shipping world in which we live has made people expect immediate results, and they sometimes take out their frustrations on my coworkers. The world can always use a little more kindness, patience and grace.

Summer’s end marks the perfect time to update your curb appeal be fore the arrival of the holiday season. Although morning temperatures might be slightly crisper, your home’s ex terior doesn’t need to look as though winter has already arrived! There is still enough time before Thanksgiv ing to complete an upgrade or two. If you’re looking to elevate your home’s attractiveness, here are a few tips for an on-point facelift this year:

1. Neutral Color Palettes

If you are considering giving your home a fresh coat of paint or siding, earth tones, shades of black or gray, green hues, neutrals and soft whites are the ones to beat. Adapting beauti fully to varying levels of light and har monizing perfectly with natural sur

2. Assorted Materials for Texture

Finally, a top curb appeal trend for this year is the creation of spaces that allow a seamless transition between a home’s indoor and outdoor living areas. Decks, porches, patios and ga

zebos are popular ways to accomplish this, and many homes already have the basic structures in place, but the most successfully linked indoor and outdoor spaces are those that view them as extensions of one another. Incorporating similar design elements like colors, textures and materials, adding canopies or screening to out door areas, populating indoor areas with plants and using lighting strate gically are a few ways to coherently tie those areas together.

Roswell native Nancy Tolbert Yilmaz opened her dance school in 1979 to a handful of students in a tiny house on Canton Street.
