What type of car insurance is important from a Personal Injury Attorney’s perspective

I love being part of the Dunwoody community and helping those injured by someone else’s negligence or recklessness. This year, I wanted to highlight how you can protect yourself before you are injured in a wreck by explaining two key types of insurance you need. Oftentimes, people shop for car insurance based on the price rather than on the type of protection provided. We have cases where someone is severely injured, but the other driver has a “minimum limits” policy which does not even cover a fraction of the medical bills.

Here are two types of insurance that you need to protect yourself if someone else injures you in a wreck:

(1) Underinsured Motorist (“UM” or “UIM”) Coverage. This is insurance that protects you if the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.

There are two types of UM insurance: “Add-On” and “Reduced-By.” You always want to have “Add-On” insurance coverage because it goes on top of the at-fault driver’s insurance. I recommend that your UM coverage match your liability coverage, which is the insurance that protects you if you cause a wreck.

(2) Medical Payment Coverage (“Med-Pay”). This is insurance that covers medical bills if you are injured in a car wreck. If you have health insurance, this can be used to cover your co-pays, deductible, and co-insurance. I recommend that you have at least $10,000 in Med-Pay coverage.

Corporate consolidation of independent veterinary hospitals has been a

huge issue for several years. We are the oldest independently owned veterinary hospital in Dunwoody and are proud of our thirty-three years of service.
