Can Strength Training Reduce the Risk of Osteoporosis? Yes. Doing strength training exercise can increase bone density and help prevent osteoporosis. Numerous scientific studies have shown that weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise performed regularly can dramatically reduce the risk of fractures and increase bone density. In her book, Strong Women, Strong Bones, Miriam E. Nelson, PhD, of Tufts University, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, explains that women who walk for exercise have stronger bones than women who don’t exercise at all. But, she says, “…the gentle stimulation of walking takes decades to produce effects.” On the other hand, Dr. Nelson’s own research showed that “...strength training just twice a week dramatically cuts the risk of fractures for postmenopausal women. After a year, participants gained bone in their hip and spine; they became stronger and their balance improved.” During weight-bearing exercise, the muscles and related tendons place tension on the bones as muscles contract to lift the weight. This action stimulates the body to lay down more bone.

be solid, they actually have a porous, honeycomb-like structure. Healthy bone is about 65% mineral, primarily calcium, and bone tissue is in a continuous cycle of breakdown and remodeling. In growing children and young adults, the bone-building process is happening faster than breakdown, resulting in a net increase in bone mass. However, this balance begins to shift at around age 25, after which we tend to lose bone mass faster than it is rebuilt. As bone density decreases, the spaces in the honeycomblike structure become larger. If too much bone is lost and these spaces become too large, there is a greater risk of breaking a bone from a minor accident or fall. Although women, especially postmenopausal women, are at greater risk for developing osteoporosis, this bone disease is not gender specific. Men are at risk, too. If you think you are at increased risk for osteoporosis, it is important to discuss this with your doctor and develop a plan of action. Whatever your age, you can take steps to improve your bone health.

Bones and Osteoporosis According to The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), “Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It happens when you lose too much bone, make too little bone, or both. As a result, your bones become weak and may break from a minor fall or, in serious cases, even from simple actions, like sneezing or bumping into furniture.” Although bones appear to

What is Tinnitus? By AMY LEDBETTER, Au.D. Nearly 36 million Americans suffer from tinnitus or head noises. It may be an intermittent sound or an annoying continuous sound in one or both ears. Prior to any treatment, it is important Conger to undergo a thorough examination and evaluation by your otolaryngologist and audiologist. Tinnitus is commonly defined as the subjective perception of sound by an individual, in the absence of external sounds. Schettino Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but a common symptom, and because it involves the perception of sound or sounds, it is commonly associated with the hearing system. One of the preventable causes of Schottenfeld inner ear tinnitus is excessive noise exposure. In some instances of noise exposure, tinnitus is the first symptom before hearing loss develops, so it should be considered a

warning sign and an indication of the need for hearing protection in noisy environments. Tips to lessen the severity of tinnitus • Avoid exposure to loud sounds and noises • Get your blood pressure checked. If it is high, get your doctor’s help to control it • Decrease your intake of salt • Avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea, cola, and tobacco • Exercise daily to improve your circulation • Get adequate rest and avoid fatigue The physicians and audiologists at North Fulton ENT can evaluate your tinnitus and discuss your treatment options. Let us be your solution for better hearing, sinus and sleep health!

Don’t Miss a Beat

Take control of your hearing and your life Hearing loss and balance disorders are not just age-related. Other medical conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, infection, and primary disorders of the ear can be the cause. If left untreated, people with hearing loss are up to five times more likely to suffer from dementia. Studies have shown that hearing amplification can drastically improve patients’ quality of life.

Dry Eyes and Dry Eye Treatment Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a condition in which there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. People with dry eyes either do not produce enough tears or have a poor quality of tears. Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults. The eye depends on the flow of tears to provide constant moisture and lubrication to maintain vision and comfort. Tears are a combination of water (for moisture), oils (for lubrication), mucus (for even spreading), and antibodies and special proteins (for resistance to infection). These components are secreted by special glands located around the eye called meibomian glands. When there is an imbalance in this tear system, a person may experience dry eyes. When tears do not adequately lubricate the eye, a person may experience: • Pain • Light sensitivity • A gritty sensation • A feeling of a foreign body or sand in the eye • Itching

• Redness • Blurring of vision • Excessive tearing (aqueous tears instead of lipid tears) There are several treatment options for DES including preservative-free artificial tears, punctal plugs to help conserve some of the tears in the eye, prescription medications to help increase tear production, and medicated scrub solutions to help decrease inflammation of the meibomian glands. Recent advancements in technology have helped our patients discover longer lasting relief of DES with the introduction of a new non-invasive procedure. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) has helped our patients improve the function of their meibomian glands. Many of our patients have reported their eyes feel better and their vision has improved after IPL therapy. Performed in our office, IPL is a painless procedure. First, the doctor applies IPL shields to protect the eyes from the light. Then a thin layer of cooling gel is applied to the treatment area. Next, a small handheld device is used to administer pulses of light to the eyelids and surrounding area. After the initial treatment,

the majority of our patients report improvements in their symptoms. In general, most patients need 4 treatments over 4 months, and then treatment as necessary. It is recommended to our patients that they have maintenance therapy at least once a year. If you suffer from any of these symptoms and have not found relief, please contact our office for more information at 770-2921999.

FAQ – Bladeless cataract surgery What is a cataract and what is cataract surgery? Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 and today cataracts affect more than 22 million Americans age 40 and older. At some point in our life, we will all develop a cataract. The natural lens of the eye yellows and becomes cloudy with age as a result of biological changes of the proteins inside the lens. The function of the human lens is to focus incoming light onto the back of the eye. As your lens ages, light from the outside worlds be-

comes more and more distorted as it enters your eye. Difficulty reading, needing more light to read, experiencing glare and haloes at night and, even poor sleep patterns can be explained by cataract formation. The treatment for cataracts involves an almost painless, 10 minute surgery to remove the “clouded lens” or “cataract” and replace it with a man made intraocular lens implant. It is the most common surgical procedure in the US and around the world and is considered to be an extremely successful and safe procedure

with a success rate approaching 99.5%. What is laser cataract surgery? With traditional cataract surgery, all the steps of the surgery are customarily performed “manually” by the surgeon using handheld tools. Laser cataract surgerythe next evolution of cataract surgery with the Ziemer Z6 laser generally offers a greater amount of precision, predictability and safety to these steps leading to potentially improve visual outcomes and

more precise targets. With the Ziemer Z6 Laser System, your surgeon has the potential to offer you unmatched accuracy and a more predictable and customized cataract procedure. Based on your medical history and pre-operative evaluation, you and your surgeon will discuss the options available for your desired visual result. Together you can discuss a treatment plan which may include using the LDV Z6 to create the laser incisions in the cornea along with an advanced lens implant that may allow for improved near, intermediate or distance vision. This tailored treatment may reduce your need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery. How is laser cataract surgery different from traditional cataract surgery? In traditional cataract surgery, incisions in the cornea are made using handheld instruments including blades to access the cataract. Your surgeon will then use a surgical device to manually create a circular opening in the lens capsule of the eye that holds the cataract. The Ziemer Z6 laser can be used to make the corneal incisions precise and the opening in the lens capsule as circular as possible, in the right location, and sized to fit the replacement lens. Your surgeon can also use the laser to break up and soften the hard cataract. Softening the lens with the laser enables your surgeon to then remove the cataract more gently and with significantly less ultrasound energy than is used in traditional manual cataract surgery. What are the benefits of laser cataract surgery? • A highly customized treatment • A treatment with little or no discomfort • A potentially more precise and predictable treatment • By and large, a gentler and easier cataract removal • Generally, a more rapid visual recovery due to reduced inflammation • The opportunity to receive tailored treatment with advanced technology multifocal lenses, which may reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery Am I a suitable candidate for laser cataract surgery? Your surgeon and you will decide whether you are a suitable candidate based on your eye anatomy, type of cataract and type of lens implant that you desire. Most patients are candidates for having some of the steps of cataract surgery performed with the Ziemer Z6 laser.

How long has the procedure been performed? Thousands of cataract procedures have been successfully performed using femtosecond laser systems, and femtosecond lasers have been used in eye procedures for decades. The most familiar use of femtosecond laser technology is LASIK. Femtosecond lasers represent an advanced standard in precision laser cataract surgery and the Ziemer Z6 platform was FDA cleared in 2013. What should I expect on the day of surgery? Your day in surgery should be no different than a routine cataract case. The Ziemer Z6 laser is positioned next to the surgeon and is utilized seamlessly during the cataract surgery process. You will be given mild IV sedation that will likely keep you pleasantly unaware of the goings on in surgery. Not only is it potentially painless, there are no needles or stitches as part of the procedure. What should I expect after surgery? After surgery, you can generally expect your vision to be improved within 24 hours. Generally, patients experience no pain after surgery. Slight scratchiness of the eye is common and they prescribed eye drops will help with any of these symptoms. Many patients return to work or normal activities the next day and even drive themselves to their post-op day one appointment! How long does the procedure take? You can expect to be at our center for about 2 hours, and you will be in the procedure room for only 20-25 minutes. Please call 678-688-4575 or visit our website at milaneyecenter.com for more information on how to schedule your Cataract evaluation at Milan Eye Center where compassion meets excellence in eye care.

You gums are the gatekeeper to the health of your teeth, their roots, and the internal systems of your body. Current research is showing a strengthening relationship between gum health and heart disease. Age Researchers have found that older people are more at risk for periodontal disease. Nearly 70% of people over the age of 65 are reported to be affected in some way by periodontitis (gum disease). The causes of gum disease can come from various sources including genetics, medications, smoking or tobacco use, poor nutrition or obesity, or stress. Direct oral causes include poor oral care at home, not brushing or flossing regularly, the lack of routinely scheduled dental office hygiene appointments, or grinding and clenching. The main goal of treating periodontal disease is to control the infection. This can be accomplished by beginning a program with your dentist and hygienist of routine periodontal maintenance appointments. Depending of the severity of infection a deep cleaning

Research shows that changes in body and brain can begin years before symptoms of disease appear - up to two decades, in the case of Alzheimer’s disease. “Fortunately, what’s good for the body is good for the brain,” said Jan Boatright, Belmont Village executive director. “Our programs and activities are integrated to support a purposeful, whole health lifestyle for our residents.”

Belmont Village’s Top Five Tips for Healthy Aging: 1. Eat Right – High fiber, low fat foods rich in anti-oxidants combat diseases like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and cognitive decline. Processed foods high in carbohydrates and bad fats cause inflammation, joint pain and tissue damage. 2. Exercise Every Day – Include cardiovascular and strength training; best activities work mind and body together – like

dancing. 3. Increase Brain Gain – Build cognitive reserve by learning something new or doing something that’s a mental stretch each day. 4. Be a Social Butterfly – Social interaction has real benefits for physical, emotional and cognitive health. 5. Maintain Purpose – Setting goals and engaging in meaningful activities are what gets us up in the morning. hen susan shaw graduated from the University of Georgia over 30 years ago with a degree in graphic design, she probably never imagined that at age 53, she would be waking up with the chickens (literally) every day, pulling on a straw hat and a pair of overalls and teaching kids how to paint pigs inside a bright red barn. And yet when you set foot on Morning Glory Farm in Hickory Flat, it’s hard to imagine “Farmer Sue” anywhere else. Striding across the barnyard in her signature straw hat, Shaw is followed by her trusty dog Rose and a chattering group of young children, all here to experience “art, animals and agriculture” during a weeklong summer camp. Ten-year-old Katie Draper of Milton leads the way, carrying a clucking white chicken in her arms. Katie has been coming to The Art Barn for four years and this year brought along her younger sister and two cousins. “It’s Katie’s absolute favorite summer camp,” says her mother Laurie Draper. “She gets to gather eggs, feed, groom and play with all the animals, go on hay rides and enjoy really fun and creative art projects. She loves it!” The same farmyard charm and relaxed rural pace that attracts the kids today also attracted Shaw 13 years ago. After years of owning her own graphic design firm and catering to big name corporate clients in Atlanta, Shaw felt the need for a change of pace and scenery. She left the city and headed to Hickory Flat, “just above Alpharetta and

just below Canton,” to settle on a small farm. The plan was to turn an old barn into a freelance graphic design studio where she could do her work without the stress of rush hour commutes and crowded urban life. She soon learned that country life has a way of seeping into your soul – and that

the farm had different plans for her. Shaw celebrated her 40th birthday with an open house for friends at her new farm and noticed how people, young and old alike, enjoyed the “quirky, rickety crickety-ness of the place.” A table covered with art supplies kept the kids happy during the party and soon

the adults were joining in. Then friends began asking if their kids could have birthday parties at “Sue’s Art Barn,” and a new idea began to grow. Shaw continued her graphic design job while working overtime to spruce up the farm, bringing in more animals, planting gardens and creating a “magical space” for children and families to enjoy. After three years, she was able to close her design business and focus entirely on The Art Barn at Morning Glory Farm. Shaw walks over to a flower-covered wooden arch leading into a small garden. A sign hanging under the arch reads “Wish It. Dream It. Do It.” “I call this my magic wishing arch,” she said. “Here’s where it all began. This is the first thing I built on this farm and I know it works.” Shaw’s father helped her build the arch years ago, and chuckled when she stood under it and made a wish with closed eyes. “What are you thinking?” he asked. “Build it and they will come?” “Something like that,” Shaw replied with a smile. Two years ago, Shaw married Pelham Wilder, a retired businessman who was not so sure about “this country thing.” Shaw convinced him to stay on the farm and live in her little yellow house with the bright blue shutters for one year, just to give it a chance. As she hoped, Morning Glory Farm worked its magic on him and when the year was up, Wilder realized he didn’t
