Car dealership reports vehicle stolen from lot CUMMING, Ga. – A 2019 Dodge Challenger was reported stolen after it was driven off the property of the Troncalli Chrysler dealership at 818 Atlanta Highway March 22. The salesman tending the male suspect said the man test drove multiple Dodge vehicles for hours before the incident. The suspect went under the false name of Traylane Portor. Because he claimed to not have his license with him, he remained in the passenger seat during each test drive. The salesmen said when they returned to the dealership, the suspect excused himself to use the bathroom while the salesman placed the keys to the Challenger in his desk drawer before leaving his cubicle. Upon returning to his desk minutes later, the salesman saw no sign of the customer, then discovered the keys missing from his drawer. After reviewing security footage, it was determined that the suspect had taken the keys from CDAR Member SWIFT Code: GMCBUS3A

Complaints spark county response to Holi festival BY PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A weekend event at the Atlanta Cricket Fields that drew thousands of people raised the hackles of Forsyth County commissioners after they received a flood of complaints from neighbors. At the board’s regularly scheduled work session March 26, commissioners began discussions on how to address potential situations similar to the March 23 Holi Festival of Colors, after nearby residents notified them of loud music, improper parking and traffic snarls. County Attorney Ken Jarrard said residents complained parking was a “significant concern” among those who complained, and there were unconfirmed reports that sanitation may have been an issue. “I will tell you I’m a little concerned there was no special event permit pulled that might have been an appropriate check on this activity that would have put some protocols in place to capture some of these issues,” Jarrard said. Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said she started receiving calls from residents Saturday morning “before the avalanche of calls” came in that evening. “I didn’t know the event was even going to take place,” Mills said, adding “The complaints just went on and on and on.” Established in 2016, the Cricket Fields occupies 58 acres along Keith Bridge Road in northeast Forsyth. The privately owned sports complex includes seven sporting fields for a variety of activities ranging from cricket to soccer.

Residents sent county officials a string of photos chronicling some of the parking problems they witnessed at the March 23 Holi Festival of Colors held at the Atlanta Cricket Fields March 23. County commissioners are expected to tighten parking restrictions at the venue during their regular public meeting this week. It was permitted to operate under a conditional use permit for commercial outdoor sporting events, and the parking calculations are based on that use, according to Tom Brown, Forsyth County Planning and Community Development director. Brown said that his department doesn’t even have a permit that can be issued for an event like the Festival
of Colors, an Indian cultural celebration marking the beginning of spring. Though attendance figures for this year’s festival were not available, estimates from last year placed attendance at around 4,000. “It was never designed for that,” Brown said. Mills said she recalled a number of public meetings were held when the site was permitted three years ago. She said noise studies were performed and the owners followed all the requirements the county had sought to ensure the operation would not interfere with surrounding properties. The issues, Jarrard said, are whether the festival is an allowable use at the site in the first place and, if so, whether the facility has adequate parking to hold the event. Commissioners agreed to amend its zoning code to require that adequate parking is provided for events at the site. Meanwhile, they directed staff to contact the facility owners about what uses are allowed on the property based on the conditional use permit. In other action at the March 26 work session, commissioners directed the county attorney to draw up revisions to the county’s solicitation ordinance to address recent concerns among residents about strangers entering their property in the guise of peddling products. The current ordinance does not prohibit such practices, even in neighborhoods with “no soliciting” signs posted. Commissioners said they want the ordinance to prohibit “sales-related” visits onto private property where a “no soliciting” signs are posted. This will apply even in cases where the vendor simply leaves a leaflet at the door.
Forsyth School Board approves revised calendar By ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. – The Forsyth County Board of Education approved modifications for the school calendar, adding professional learning days that will shorten the first semester by one day for each of the next two years. At its March 19 meeting, the board added a professional learning day, set for July 24 this year, and moved the end of the first semester for the 2019-2020 school year to Dec. 19. The original calendar called for first semester classes to end Dec. 20.
The calendar for the 2020-2021 school year was also amended to add a professional learning day on Aug. 5, 2020. That moves the start of first semester classes from Aug. 5 to Aug. 6. Board members also gave unanimous approval to safety upgrades in the vestibules at Forsyth elementary schools. In all, the modifications will be made at 18 elementary schools and are scheduled to begin May 24 with completion projected no later than Jan. 3. The schools effected include: Big Creek, Brookwood, Chattahoochee, Chestatee, Coal Mountain, Cumming, Daves Creek, Johns Creek, Mashburn,

Board members also approved a major construction project that calls for the addition and modification for 20 classrooms at West Forsyth High School. “Essentially, it would just be adding a wing onto West Forsyth High,” board member Kristen Morrissey said. Work on the project is scheduled to
begin at the end of classes this spring. The board also voted to appoint Morrissey as its delegate to the Georgia School Board Association’s business meeting in Savannah later this year. Members have two opportunities each year to propose changes to the GSBA legislative positions. The Governmental Operations Committee, appointed by the GSBA president, reviews the positions and proposals submitted by local boards and makes the appropriate recommendations to the Delegate Assembly during their annual business meeting. The board plans to discuss legislative topics and other corresponding issues at a later meeting.

Left Lane Review:
2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback have predicted it this way, how it has turned every teenager into a robot that only has three audio responses, two of which are grunts. Of course, Asimov was no perfect soothsayer. Unsurprisingly he also penned many forecasts that greatly missed the mark. Asimov said appliances would be powered by radioisotopes and the United States would likely have one or two experimental fusion power plants by 2014. Even five years after that, it looks as if such technologies are still far, far away from reality. I wish this one were true, but Asimov foretold of homes where ceilings and walls glow softly in a variety of colors that will change at the touch of a button. And in case you forgot this is a car review (or is supposed to be, anyway), Asimov predicted the way we would get around. Like his other forecasts, the writer was accurate in some regards but wildly off in others. The raised, moving sidewalks he predicted would become a staple in urban areas are seemingly only found in airports, used by people who suddenly
Isaac Asimov issued many predictions in a New York Times article highlighting the 1964 World’s Fair and what such a fair would be like in 50 years. Some of his JOE PARKER predictions turned Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com out to be fairly accurate. The author and biochemistry professor prophesied the world’s population would double by 2014, which it did, plus another few hundred million. He predicted that machines would outperform humans in many routine jobs, and that “mankind will therefore have become largely a race of machine tenders.” In a way, Asimov predicted FaceTime, Skype and video calling, stating “Communications will be sight-sound, and you will see as well as hear the person you telephone.” He also foretold of computers being “much miniaturized that will serve as the brains of robots.” Extremely precise when you consider the smartphone and, though he may not

forget how to walk while upon them. His prediction of vehicles traveling on a bed of compressed air is only accurate if you consider hovercrafts, which I imagine are not too easy to navigate in traffic. Nothing has come of what Asimov described as “one of the city’s marvels” — compressed air tubes that would carry goods and materials to specific locations. Amazon is trying something similar with its drone delivery, but even with people ordering toilet paper online, I don’t think it is quite up to the scale Asimov presumed. But he was spot on for his prediction of the engineering of driverless cars. “Much effort will be put into the designing of vehicles with ‘robot-brains,’ vehicles that can be set for particular destinations and that will then proceed there without interference by the slow reflections of a human driver,” Asimov wrote. That brings me to the 2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback (Editor: Finally!), because it shows us how technology once
thought of as the makings of sci-fi is now commonplace, while simultaneously proving that some things are better left unchanged. Despite testing the base, SE Corolla, it still included loads of “robot brains.” The Corolla hatch comes standard with a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, radar guided active cruise control, lane departure alert that will give the wheel a nudge to keep you in the white lines, and automatic high beam headlights. New for 2019 is a Lane Tracing Assist which supplements the dynamic cruise control by providing “steering assistance” when no lane makers are present. Toyota has also added Road Sign Assist which identifies certain road signs and displays visual and audio warnings if, for instance, you are about to roll through a four-way stop. That is a lot of technology banking that “robots” can do routine tasks better than humans. The Corolla hatchback

COMMUNITY
Cumming mourns loss of local ‘Man of Music’ Bob Russell co-produced ‘Georgia Senior Follies’ By ADAM DARBY adam@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — The City of Cumming mourned the loss in recent weeks of renowned musician and local theater/ entertainment proponent Bob Russell. His influence on music and theatrical entertainment within the community struck a chord with an astounding number of local residents. Russell passed away Feb. 28 at the age of 90, just two weeks prior to the opening of the final show for his longestablished passion project, the “Georgia Senior Follies.” As the show experienced its closing performances, residents continue to reflect on the impact of his career in the arts. “Everyone was in shock because he was loved by so many people. He touched so many lives throughout his career,” said Kathleen Russell, his wife and longtime professional partner. “After his memorial here, we’re going to have another one in California…he’s touched thousands of lives…it was never work for him because he loved music so much.” Bob Russell fell in love with music at the age of 6 when he first began
tapping the keys of a piano. His teachers and parents quickly took notice of the talent and the passion behind it all before lending their support. Continuing to play through his formative years, he was soon sent to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he refined his skills. Realizing his talent, he began to form swing bands of his own and immediately began touring and playing clubs throughout Las Vegas before he was even old enough to be admitted entry on his own. As he continued to grow and immerse himself in the world of music and the performing arts, he attended San Jose State University where he attained a master’s degree in conducting and arranging. It was there he would spend the majority of his professional career spreading his admiration for musical expression with younger generations as a teacher for the next 47 years. That’s not to say he didn’t still tap the keys himself in a band of his own simply known as the Mood Swingers. However, it was his friendship with film actress Annette Bening and her family that sparked his interest in contributing to local theater and entertain-
ment in Georgia. Bening’s mother was a member of the “San Diego Follies” and decided to show performance footage to the Russells one night in 2008. It was then that Bob and Kathleen decided to bring something similar to the South. Bob and Kathleen formed BK Productions to create the “Georgia Senior Follies” as a means of attracting local senior performers who shared a love of stage and music. “Very talented seniors don’t always have the opportunities to perform…the older you are, the harder it is to find roles in local musicals or plays,” Kathleen said. “So, that’s why we wanted to focus on [the senior market]…we created our own show and showcased people over 55.” The pair quickly found a home at the Cumming Playhouse. Having made the move from California to Georgia, they began regularly attending shows at the Playhouse before contacting the executive director at the time, Linda Heard. Not long after, BK Productions was born, and the “Georgia Senior Follies” as well as Broadway plays and musicals were created for performers of all ages. “He was possibly the single most influential force in the refinement and professionalism of the Playhouse,” Heard
said. “With years of experience in California, he brought to us a higher level of performance than we had known … It was always a part of his conversation; talking about the tremendous talent in this area and the great need for a place for it to develop.” The “Georgia Senior Follies” rapidly gained traction in its focus to enable older actors and actresses to perform in musical entertainment. Each year, the production had a different theme, from Broadway to Hollywood musicals, from the birth of rock n’ roll to a country jamboree. Meanwhile, BK Productions was also putting on productions of acclaimed Broadway shows such as “Fiddler on the Roof,” “White Christmas” and “Gypsy.” “First year it was so successful. We had so many people audition and we sold out,” Kathleen said. “We started out just doing two weekends and people were calling the Playhouse disappointed they couldn’t get tickets. So after the first two years, we decided to do three weekends, and since then it has been a huge success.” But, the hustle and bustle of stage production finally convinced the couple they should make this the last season for the Senior Follies. The final theme, “Rewind,” would highlight the favor-

His ultimate dream was to see a performing arts center develop in Cumming so that a larger space could be devoted to bringing the best in community entertainment for the residents. “He really wanted to see a performing arts center here; a cultural arts center,” Kathleen said. “Forsyth is such a fast growing and wealthy county that we have everything except a performing/cultural arts center, and that’s something he always dreamed about. Unfortunately, he didn’t live long enough to see that dream come true here, but hopefully that will happen…I just would like him to be remembered for his enormous love of music and equally his love for people.”

Local 6 year old wins international piano competition By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com
Julie Wang and Todd Zhang/Special
William Zhang, 6, won first place and the Judge’s Distinction Award at the 2019 American Protege International Piano and String Competition.
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — William Zhang’s parents knew their son was pretty good at playing piano when they entered him in his first competition. What they weren’t expecting was for their 6-yearold to win first place in the 2019 American Protege International Piano and String Competition. And it didn’t stop there — William also earned the Judge’s Distinction Award across all age groups. His parents, Julie Wang and Todd Zhang, said they are still reeling from the accolades. “The day when we received the notice about William’s winning, he did a little dance on the floor,” Julie said. “He was over the moon.” This year saw a record number of musicians apply to the American Protege International Piano and String Competition. Participants applied from 17 countries, including the United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Israel, China, India, Australia and New Zealand. All instruments, including voice, could enter. Judges evaluated performances for

four groups, based on age. As a grand winner, William was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall on March 31, where he performed the first movement of Mozart’s “Piano Sonata No. 16 in C Major,” K 545, one of the very pieces William played to win the competition. “Music is very rich media,” Julie said. “Music can express the unexpressed. There are many different facets of elements in music. When music plays, there are beautiful images and heart-touching poetry. All these invoke the imagination in kids. What is the most important to us is that music has the magic to talk to the heart in the language of love. Other than any practical benefits of music education — such as improving motor skills, coordination, and boosting selfconfidence, etc. — we feel the foremost important benefit is that music teaches kids about love.” William first showed a keen interest in music when he was 2, and he began to take serious music lessons at age 4, Todd said. He is currently homeschooled so he can take half days for piano lessons from internationally-renowned concert pianist and professor Raffi Besalyan at Georgia
State University. Aside from music, Julie said William also enjoys reading, drawing and swimming. But for the immediate future, William will continue to focus on his piano studies. “One of the most important reasons we encourage William to learn music and piano is because he is always so happy when he plays the piano,” Julie said. “We would love William to perform for the community to bring music to more people and share his happiness about music.” She added that the family also wants to help reach out to local communities to promote music education. When William’s win was first announced online, Julie recounted that she heard a comment: “Sad that you’ll never see this in the black community.” “This comment broke our heart,” Julie said. “We want to reach out to the communities where music education resource is scarce and do what we can to help with the music education there.” Videos of William’s winning performances and future endeavors can be viewed on his YouTube channel at bit. ly/2FzziJl.

SCHOOLS
Students take the stage at local TED Talk By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Thirteen middle and high schoolers from Johns Creek and Forsyth County shared their “ideas worth growing” at Lambert High School’s annual TEDx event. TED Talks, which stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, is a media company that shares short lectures for free online. Speakers are given a maximum of 18 minutes but free range to talk about anything from technology and environmental science to fashion or social issues. Lambert High has had a TEDEd club, a program that helps students hone their public speaking and storytelling skills, since 2015. “I wanted to give them a platform to share their ideas,” said Simran Malhotra, a senior at Lambert and founder of the club. “It wouldn’t just have to be through public speaking. It could be animation, writing, poetry.” “This club is for students who feel like they don’t have a platform at our school,” Malhotra went on to say. “High school can be a tough place for some people, and so can middle school. People are still trying to figure themselves out,
and this platform really helps them find who they are.” The club holds public speaking workshops for students at Lambert and around the area. Malhotra said 75 to 85 people audition for the club each year, but only about 20 are accepted. “We like to look for creativity and uniqueness in their talk, something that isn’t too cliché and will actually make a difference in this world,” she said. “Then, we look at how their public speaking skills are. We’ve been working with each person for a year, so we do expect their public speaking skills to show. We’ve been teaching them how to speak and how to find their own style.” March 22, the club held its third annual TED Talk event. Around 200 people attended, with more watching online through a livestream. The theme was “sprout,” and speakers talked about how they grew from different life experiences. “One person talked about Minecraft,” Malhotra said. “His story was pretty humorous. Another person talked about their medical journey and how homeopathic medicine changed the world.” This year’s speakers from Lambert High School were Aravind Natchiappan, Jesse Tu, Lane Banta, Maria John
Special
Students from area high schools held their own TED Talk on March 22 at Lambert High School. Britto, Naheen Ali, Nikhila Alavala, Noor Khan, Ramya Gullapalli and Sripushkar Julapally. Additional speakers were Bisan Malhotra, Riverwatch Middle School; Nicholas Roncal, Alliance Academy; Ravnoor Gujral, Taylor Road Middle School and Tarun Ramesh, Riverwatch Middle School. “I always get very, very proud at the event,” Malhotra said. “When you see
them on stage and you see the difference from when they came and auditioned.” “These are kids who are 12 years old, some of them are 15 or 16, giving their own TED Talk,” she added. “They show to the world that you can do anything no matter who you are or how old you are, and that you can learn from people older than you and younger than you.” To learn about upcoming TEDEd events, visit lhsteded.ga.

It only seemed right that because Milton and Alpharetta partner in so many things that the ABA and MBA should also partner. Sharon Mays, Milton Business Alliance chairwoman 14 | Forsyth Herald | April 4, 2019
Milton, Alpharetta business groups connect By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Though Alpharetta and Milton are two distinct cities, they are still intertwined in the North Fulton community, and the partnership with the Milton Business Alliance and Alpharetta Business Association furthers that connectivity. That was the message given by each organization’s leader at the joint meeting between the groups March 28 at Office Evolution in Alpharetta. The annual joint meetings began three years ago, and have been a boon for connecting businesses in the neighboring cities. “It only seemed right that because Milton and Alpharetta partner in so many things that the ABA and MBA should also partner,” said Milton Business Alliance Chairwoman Sharon Mays. “We’re trying to build businesses and help them thrive, and we can do it better together.” Peg Hussing, chairwoman of the Alpharetta Business Association, said the partnership also made sense. “They are a small business association just as we are, so we are very clearminded, we just love doing it and always have a good turnout,” Hussing said. The neighboring organizations do vary in some aspects. Both groups concentrate on networking, but the ABA also puts on its annual farmer’s market and Brew Moon Fest while the MBA is more partnership-based and supports local charities and offers scholarships. Both groups also have a wide array from businesses, with Milton comprised mostly of smaller companies. However, the networking between the

The event was the third joint meeting between the business organizations. two separate entities benefits the North Fulton business community as a whole, Mays said. “This brings the whole business community together,” she said. “We can always get new ideas. In the first year it was such a hit we thought we should make it an annual thing. Everyone liked seeing new faces and new businesses partnerships were formed. It gives everyone a chance for more business exposure.” Building the local business community is also a priority for the ABA. “Alpharetta has its Chamber of Commerce, and often we are asked the difference the chamber and the ABA,” Hussing said. “The answer is the ABA is more community-minded, just like the MBA. We take care of our own. I think they are both great organizations.” The community mindset is particularly important for Milton, which has
three distinct businesses areas — downtown Crabapple, the Deerfield Parkway area and the Birmingham Crossroads. “With Milton having three commercial zones, it’s really important to get the business community to connect because they are not physically connected,” Mays said. “We need to play more of an active role to help them stay connected and draw attention to all businesses in Milton.” Both organization leaders also outlined upcoming events for their respective groups, including an outdoor event for the MBA at The Green near Milton City Hall, and the ABA’s farmer’s market which begins April 13. “We already have 80-something vendors signed up, and it’s going to be a great event,” Hussing said. The art of creating successful communities The development scene in Atlanta has come a long way since back in the 1980s, when we were just blasting off into what many called the era of “suburban sprawl.” Business was booming and Geoff smith people were moving to Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com the metro area from all over the world. Hundreds of large neighborhoods were built up and down I-85 and I-75 throughout Cobb and Gwinnett Counties, then up and down Ga. 400 throughout North Fulton. There was so much demand for goods and services that almost any commercial development that was built became immediately successful. Our level of expectations for the development that surrounded us was not nearly as high as it is today. Most of the cities and counties were thrilled to swell their tax base. It was a land-grab, and our level of sophistication when it came to community planning was comparatively low. Early in the 2000s, the term “mixeduse” started to become popular. Folks that had been here started looking around their communities and they began wanting more. City planners with better expertise took positions, and people began wanting to have more of a sense of place in the areas where they lived. They wanted a town center feel. The term “strip malls” became an ugly phrase. We started to see things like Atlantic Station, and people liked that. Suwanee, Duluth and Woodstock began construction on town centers that have since attracted hundreds of new residents, businesses and private-investment development. And we were moving into an era of a new kind of development and everyone wanted mixed-use. Then the bottom fell out with the crash in 2008. We emerged into a system where
There needed to be a new model for mixed-use development. And that new model was Avalon. banks demanded more from their developers. Banks wanted to see proof of a project’s long-term viability. No longer was it good enough for a builder to put different uses next to each other and call it “mixed-use.” The developer had to show how those uses played well off of each other, each adding to the area’s micro-economy. As such, there needed to be a new model for mixed-use development. And that new model was Avalon. I was lucky last week to host on my radio show Lamar Wakefield. His firm, Wakefield-Beasley, worked with Mark Toro’s North American Properties to develop Avalon. The project led to Wakefield-Beasley designing The Battery at Suntrust Park, Halcyon in Forsyth County, Revel in Gwinnett County and town centers all across the metro area and Avalon-like projects in areas across the country. It was a fascinating conversation and I encourage you to listen in at atldevelopments.tumblr.com. For a quality designer and planner like Wakefield-Beasley, there is a significant amount of research that first goes into understanding a project’s surroundings those who live there. He does a specific study to understand everyone in a 3-mile, a 5-mile and a 10mile radius. Some retailers, like a pizza restaurant for example, will only draw from people within a 3-mile radius. Others, like a Whole Foods, might bring people in from a full 10-mile radius. In
the case of Avalon, the 10-mile radius around it was the most affluent 10-mile radius anywhere in the country at the time of construction, Wakefield said. It was important for them to understand the shopping tendencies of the people in each radius so they could figure out which retailers they wanted to pull into their project. When a developer is betting hundreds of millions of dollars on a development, this kind of information is critical. My conversation had me wondering if city planners take into account the same information when they look to approve single-use, or smaller-scale variances in their cities. Most of those developers are building with the intention of selling the project after construction is complete. And there should be more pressure on the city planners to determine the project’s economic viability, as well as its economic impact on the surrounding areas. Citizen groups all over the metro area are being formed to try to determine what residents would like to see developed in their towns. But shouldn’t the first order of business really be to first understand what kinds of development their towns can support? They need the critical information and data that folks like Wakefield collect. They need an expert to understand that data. And they need an artist to show how that data can be incorporated into the development of a site in a way that makes their city better. HOW
As a small business owner, what are your top challenges? Every month I talk or meet with hundreds of small business owners, and lately the list of their top challenges have been pretty consistent. Here is a list dick jones of the top four: Founder & President Jones Simply Sales Number four on the list is the ability to build, develop, deploy and provide additional products and services. Small business owners view this priority as a vehicle to open up additional revenue channels to compliment their core business offerings. Attracting and retaining customers is next on the list. Customers, particularly those who do repeat business, are the lifeblood of small business. The cost of acquiring new customers is far more expensive than retaining existing customers; so small business owners are going out of their way to ensure they don’t lose current customers, and are always trying to attract new ones. The next on the list is attracting and retaining reliable and hard-working employees. With the influx of the “millennial” generation, the ability to hang on to top talent has become more challenging than ever. Believe it or not, it is not just about the money you pay your employees, but their overall experience and freedom to enjoy life as well. At the top of the list is business growth. With a strong U.S. economy, small business owners are citing growth as their top priority and their access to working capital as being a critical success factor to enable this. There are hundreds of other issues, challenges and priorities facing small business owners today, but these four are

Timeless kitchen trends for North Atlanta Between expensive appliances, beautiful cabinets, and costly countertops, we spend a lot of money on our kitchens. In fact, according to John Hogan of Remodeling Expo Center, the median spend on a kitchen remodel in North Atlanta was $43,000. To protect against falling into the “trend trap”, the trick is to incorporate timeless design elements that won’t soon go out of style. By choosing kitchen features that can stand the test of time, you’ll save yourself money (and the work of remodeling) down the line. Remodeling Expo Center in Roswell is the largest remodeler in North Atlanta and Mr. Hogan spends many hours offering clients advice on “timeless vs. trendy” design. Here are some important elements to consider. Neutral Paint Colors The classic white kitchen is sometimes critiqued for being a little boring—but there’s one solid reason to opt for this color in the kitchen: It will never go out of style. According to Remodeling Expo’s Kitchen Trend Report, a whopping 43 percent of renovating homeowners opted for white cabinets. Not sure which shade of white to go for? The designers at Remodeling Expo have their favorite warm variants to the classic white that everyone has in mind. Shaker-Style Cabinets Known for their simple design and recessed-panel doors, Shaker cabinets have been in-style for more than 100 years. Shaker cabinets are popular in farmhouse kitchens, but they will also work with a variety of home decor styles. If you haven’t shopped for cabinets lately, you’ll find over 20 different variations of the traditional Shaker Cabinet door style. Drawer and Cabinet Organizers Organization will never go out of style. What’s hot now is creatively hiding small appliances like toasters, coffee makers and blenders, in updated cabinets that rest upon the countertop. Features like built-in baking sheet dividers and pull-out cabinet drawers haven’t been around for that long, when hidden
behind unfussy, timeless cabinet fronts, these functional features will never be outdated. Built-in Appliances A skilled cabinet maker can make most appliances appear to be built-in , when they’re actually standard counter depth models. The built-in look will always be high-end and timeless. Will the stainless steel appliances ever go out of style? The designers at Remodeling Expo Center all agree, “Don’t hold your breath waiting for this to happen!” Choose Natural Materials Adding in natural materials like wood and stone will ground the space and keep it classic. If you want a timeless look, resist the urge to create an ultramodern kitchen full of shiny stainless steel and engineered materials. Instead, incorporate some natural surfaces like distressed wood on the side of the island, floating shelves or an accent wall with some wood grain and earth tones. White Marble or Butcher Block Countertops White marble will always be an elegant choice for kitchen countertops, but if the maintenance and potential for staining has you worrying about its longevity, consider butcher block. The go-to choice for farmhouse kitchens, butcher block will wear beautifully over the years and you can prepare food directly on it. Subway Tile Subway tile is not only versatile enough to work with many different decor styles, but you probably won’t get sick of it in five years (after all, the look’s been around for over 100 years). While it may be tempting to go with a trendy backsplash, like metallic tiles, sea glass, or bright geometric tiles, opt for something a more simple, if you want a backsplash with staying power. A homeowner doesn’t need to do all these things but working in a few of them usually suffices. To learn more about timeless kitchen design, contact The Remodeling Expo Center at 404 910-3969 or stop in the Design Center at 48 King Street, Roswell, GA 30075. RemodelingExpo.com

Why 2019 is a great time to sell your Atlanta home Brought to you by –BILL RAWLINGS Senior Vice President & Managing Broker, North Atlanta Office Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty The Atlanta real estate market has been hot over the past several years, so if you’ve been considering whether to list your home for sale this year, there may be no better time to do so than right now. Here are several reasons why 2019 is an excellent year to sell your Atlanta home. It’s a Seller’s Market Increasing demand paired with lower inventories has made the Metro Atlanta market a seller’s in the last months. This means that if you, as a seller, price your home competitively with fair market values, you’re more likely to sell quickly with your asking price. In some cases, if more than one buyer wants your property and they begin a bidding war, you may actually get more than your asking price. Sellers definitely have the advantage in current market conditions. More Home Buyers are Flooding the Market Last year, Atlanta became the third fastest-growing metropolitan area in the nation, growing by nearly 100,000 people between 2016 and 2017.
As this trend continues, a fair number of incoming buyers will be looking to purchase their first Atlanta home, adding to a large number of prospective homebuyers already on the hunt. Listing your home this year could put you in Rawlings front of hundreds or thousands of prospective buyers. Interest Rates are Starting to Climb We have enjoyed historically low mortgage interest rates for several years, but as the economy grows, those rates are now starting to climb. This can reduce the number of people eligible to buy homes in your price range. As of early 2019, the rates are still low and favorable to home buyers, but as they climb, 2020 may tell a different story. If you have been sitting on your home while your equity builds, now may be a good time to cash in on that equity before interest rates start reducing your pool of buyers. The experts at Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty can work with you to price your Atlanta home competitively and market it effectively to an eager market. The ‘Round TUIT’ By Michelle Wilson Wilson Legal, PC
When I was growing up, my mom had a round white magnet on the fridge with the letters T-U-I-T on it. When she’d ask us if we had done a chore and we Wilson responded that we’d get it done when we got around to it, she’d take that magnet, slap it on the table in front of us and say “here’s your round TUIT now get up and do it” in her best first grade teacher sing-song voice. Her words would get stuck in your head and we began forcing ourselves to avoid the phrase “when we get around to it” so that we wouldn’t give her a chance to use the magnet on us. We knew the chore needed to get done and Mom wanted it done sooner rather than later. It is really easy to put off chores – especially ones without reminders. Updating your will, your power of attorney, your healthcare direc-
tive are chores that slip your mind. The reminders come when you or someone you know has a bad life event. Often it’s more expensive or too late to help after something bad happens. Don’t wait for a crisis. Find some help to review your documents today. Wilson Legal, PC 407 East Maple St., #105 Cumming, GA 30040 (770) 205-7861

Choosing a shutter style Exterior Shutters can really make or break the exterior of your home and plays a vital role in the overall curb appeal. One of the items to consider is the STYLE of shutter that will look good on your home and give that final touch to complete the picture. Dupbel Millworks Inc. is set up to create unique custom styles while offering a variety of standard styles to choose from. Let’s discuss some of the standard styles most commonly used. Board and Batten Shutters A shutter typically composed of three to five vertical boards that are connected using two or three horizontal battens. These shutters inspire a country or cottage look and have grown in popularity in the last few years. The latest trend is to have multiple narrow boards to create a cleaner, more sophisticated look. This style lends itself to adding additional interest by adding diagonal pieces or even strap hinges. Paneled Shutters This traditional style consists of panels within a frame. This shutter style’s popularity during the last number of decades has firmly entrenched it as the “traditional look.” Especially with the panels you can select a number of styles based on your preference. We can start off with a Flat panel, giving a very smooth and minimalistic look. Or you can do the very traditional Raised panel, providing a more three-dimensional appearance. Our Shaker Raised panels gives you even more depth while keeping it very classic and stylish. The Mission style panel is another option, where it is incorporating design elements from the Board and Batten style, but with a much more sophisticated look. The size and placement of the panels will typically follow the window design, but lately we’ve seen a lot of deviation from the traditional to jazz it up a little bit. We can incorporate a small panel in the center, make them single panels, or even 3 equal panels, all depending on the look the home owner wants to create. Louvered Shutters. Louvered styled shutters are the original “classic standard,” found on period buildings such as Antebellum, Colonial, Williamsburg, Georgian and Federal styled houses. Louvered shutters create an additional architectural element to enhance the house’s façade. Louvered shutters can also be the right choice for Contemporary styled buildings wishing to create a more traditional appearance. For a slightly more modern look you can make the slats wider to give a cleaner, less busy appearance. Dupbel Millworks Inc. manufactures exteriors shutters using only weather resistant materials. This is especially important in Georgia’s hot, humid conditions. We have a series of standard shutters styles, while fully equipped to help you design a custom style specifically for your house. We are a full service company, and can help you from the design phase to installation. Our business is located in Alpharetta, GA and we are proud to serve the residential and commercial market of North Georgia. We are small enough to provide you with personal attention, yet strong enough to handle complex designs.

Learn How To Live Pain Free. Don’t Miss These Great Presentations at the Expo! Title Sponsor – JOHNS CREEK PHYSICAL THERAPY
Johns Creek Physical Therapy is pleased to be this year’s Title sponsor for Appen Media Group’s 55+ Lifestyle Expo. We invite you to join us for three great Educational Seminar presentations:
11:00 Understanding Back Pain and Sciatica. Low back pain is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States and affects millions of people every year. Many times people look to get an x-ray or an MRI to explain “why” they are hurting. But recent research has suggested that the findings on your MRI may not explain why your back is actually hurting. In fact, one of the most common causes of low back pain is not even seen on MRI. If it’s not seen, then it’s usually not treated. At the presentation we will discuss the top three common causes of low back pain and sciatica. We will also discuss why the finding on your MRI may have nothing to do with why you’re having low back pain. Finally, we will show you a few simple things that you can do to relieve your back pain naturally, without medications, injections, or surgery.
12:00 Neck and Shoulder Pain. Shoulder pain, especially pain coming from the rotator cuff, is a common problem as we approach our retirement years. A loss of flexibility, overuse, and repetitive trauma are often to blame for most shoulder injuries. But sometimes shoulder pain can be coming from a problem in the neck. At this presentation we will explain the most common causes of neck and shoulder pain and how a problem in one area can cause pain in the other. You will also learn how to determine where your pain is likely coming from. If you only treat your symptoms, you may never fully address the problem and find complete symptom relief. Most orthopedic surgeons have their patients try physical therapy first for the treatment of neck and shoulder pain. At this presentation, we’ll explain why.
1:00 Understanding Foot and Heel Pain. Many times foot and heel pain is rather easy to diagnose. That searing pain in the bottom of your foot with the first steps of the day is normally diagnosed as plantar fasciitis. Pain in the back of the heel, especially with increased activity, is often diagnosed as a problem with the Achilles tendon. It doesn’t take a medical degree to know this. But how do you treat these two stubborn problems? In many cases, even though the pain might be in your foot, the real problem is likely somewhere else. If you don’t treat the actual source of the problem, you will find yourself constantly chasing your symptoms. At the Foot and Heel Pain discussion, we will share with you why treating only the foot is not likely going to resolve your pain. We will also discuss how you can find the real source of the pain, treat that problem effectively, and get back to being active again.

Roswell Funeral Home & Greenlawn Cemetery Roswell Funeral Home has been providing funeral services to the community since 1839. The Roswell Manufacturing Company was founded that same year and later became known as the Roswell Mill. Unassembled caskets were sold at the Roswell Mill Store, which led to the store’s opening of a funeral home. In 1935, Roswell Funeral Home built a new location on the historic Roswell Square. After the current location on Mansell Road opened in 1989, a partnership between Roswell Funeral Home and Green Lawn Cemetery, which was incorporated in 1960 was created to become the only true funeral home and cemetery combination in the area. And it still is to this day. We began with a commitment to a high standard of service, and
throughout our history we have continued to lead and innovate. Green Lawn Cemetery is 58 acres of rolling hills, water features, and two lakes with 28 separate gardens. The first mausoleum was built in 1963 and subsequent mausoleums have followed to serve the needs of the expanding community. Our newest and fifth mausoleum is now under construction and is set to be completed in spring of 2019. Today, we’re proud to be a member of the Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers. We are committed to exceeding expectations and delivering a standard of service that is 100 percent guaranteed. 950 Mansell Road—Roswell, Georgia 30076—770-993-4811
Pre-planning is the ultimate gift of love you can give your family.
Regular exercise is important to the physical and mental health of everyone, and becomes increasingly essential as we age. Physical fitness not only produces longPRADO term health benefits but also boosts energy levels, improves mood and increases confidence. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends adults 65 and older get at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intense aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days per week. While that may seem like a lot, it only amounts to 20 to 30 minutes each day and even can be broken down into three, 10-minute sessions. “Although many adults in the 50-plus age bracket may think it’s too late to be physically active, it’s important to realize that you can benefit from even small bouts of movement,” said Dr. Lilly Pham, Medicare medical director for Humana’s South Region. If you need motivation, find an exercise buddy or join a class at your local fitness center. Not only can an

Dr. Pham notes it’s beneficial to check with your health insurance provider to see if they offer discounts or free classes in your area. For example, health benefits company Humana teams up with the SilverSneakers Fitness Program to provide Humana Medicare Advantage members with free memberships at participating fitness centers throughout Georgia. Make sure you have a wellprepared retirement plan Providing for health care is a key part of retirement planning. For most Americans age 65 and over, Medicare, and its various components, provides most of the resources to take care of a typical retiree’s health care needs. One health care need that is only minimally covered by Medicare is that of long-term care (LTC). LTC is the term used to describe a variety of maintenance or “custodial” services required by individuals who are chronically disabled, ill, or infirm. LTC may include nursing home care, assisted living, home health care, or adult day care. Long-term care is expensive. In 2018, the national median cost in an assisted living facility was $48,000 per year; the national median cost for a semi-private nursing home room was $89,425 per year. The problem, then, is how to plan for an expensive need that may, or may not, occur. One answer has been that of a standalone, LTC insurance policy. Should the need arise, a LTC policy can furnish some or all of the resources needed to pay for care. LTC insurance can be expensive and most policies allow for the possibility of future rate increases. Plus, if few (or none) of a policy’s benefits are
used, there is a sense that the money was not well spent. One alternative to a stand-alone LTC insurance policy is a “combination” policy that links an annuity with a tax-qualified, long-term care benefit. If LTC services are later needed, the accumulated value inside the annuity is withdrawn first to pay LTC expenses. If on-going LTC expenses exhaust the funds inside the annuity, additional, tax-qualified LTC coverage may be provided by the insurance company through a LTC “rider” to the base annuity. If LTC services are not needed, the annuity value can be used to either provide additional income, or, at the owner’s death, can pass to named beneficiaries. One key part of a well-prepared retirement plan is looking ahead to the possible need for long-term care. The advice and guidance of trained financial and insurance professionals, in sorting out the various options for meeting this need, is strongly recommended. I will be at Appen Media’s 55+ Lifestyle Expo and would love to meet you and set up a time to talk about this or any other need you may have in preparing for retirement, or if you are already there, making sure you don’t out live your money.

Bulldogs shut down region leaders Milton By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Forsyth Central baseball handed Milton its first Region 5-AAAAAAA loss of the season March 27 and took the second contest of the threegame series March 29 with a 3-1 win on the road. Bulldogs’ starter Jacob Ryan earned the win with an impressive performance. The senior pitched six innings, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts and four walks. Central head coach Kevin McCollum said a turning point in Ryan’s performance was his ability to get the team out of a tough spot in the bottom of the second. Milton’s Tyler McLoughlin and Josh Carrico singled to open the frame, and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Ryan responded by throwing a full-count strikeout. The Eagles scored on a sacrifice fly from Mitch Landon, but Ryan picked off Carrico at second to end the inning. “[Ryan] worked his way out of it only giving up one run, that was huge,” McCollum said. “By then we took a little better approach at the plate and put some more balls in play.” A costly error by Milton allowed the Bulldogs to respond with a run in the top of the third. With one out, Chase Hillenbrand hit a slow grounder to Milton second baseman Curt McDonnell, who threw the ball beyond the reach of his first baseman trying to get the force out before Hillenbrand ran out the play. Hillenbrand later scored on a sacrifice fly from Mitchell Gross. Ryan helped his own cause in the top of the fourth when he hit a two-out, RBI single with a slow chopper over the mound to score Luke Owens. “The guys are seeing the results with putting the ball in play,” McCollum said, “just playing small ball and seeing what

Milton stranded a runner at third in the bottom of the fifth, and Central stranded its potential insurance run in the top of the seventh to keep the score at 3-1. Ryan’s impressive night came to an end in the bottom of the seventh after he walked Carrico to open the inning. Will Robbins relieved Ryan and earned two strikeouts and forced a flyout to secure the Bulldogs’ win. Milton starter Cole Stupp pitched six innings with four hits, two earned runs and nine strikeouts. Sam Ellis threw one
inning and allowed no hits and earned a strikeout. Tyler McLoughlin led the Eagles offensively batting 2-3 with a double and run scored. Despite the loss, Milton (15-4, 8-2) retained its lead over the Region 5-AAAAAAA standings heading into spring break. Central’s win and North Forsyth’s 13-7 win over West Forsyth Friday puts the Bulldogs (11-6, 7-3) and Raiders (13-7, 7-3) a game behind the Eagles. Following the break, each Region 5 squad will battle the other, with the top four earning playoff berths. “It’ll get interesting here with the next five games,” McCollum said. “Three of us are bunched up, and any teams down below us can make a run.”

But the Corolla is not all pills replacing meals or daily flights to Mars, it also gives us a glimpse of where we came from. And I mean that in the best way. For starters, it’s a hatchback, and that is a designation that slowly seems to be dying amid the flood of crossovers and SUVs. I happen to be of the mindset that hatchbacks are, in many important ways, superior to crossovers. A hatch provides all the space, convenience and practicality of a crossover while typically offering a better ride, far superior handling characteristics, more efficient fuel economy and, often enough, better looks. While the hatchback in 2019 may seem a thing of the past, nothing harkens to yesteryear more than the way our tester Corolla changed gears — a manual transmission. Not a dual-clutch, not a CVT, no, a good old fashioned clutch pedal and a lever in the middle of the car. Although, calling the Corolla hatchback’s third pedal a clutch gives the wrong impression. It implies it must be pushed down to engage, when in fact,

the Corolla’s clutch is easier to depress than Eeyore. With its easy-to-shift transmission, the Corolla serves up silky smooth gear changes and adds a bit of fun to the hatchback. It’s not something you often hear connected — Corolla and fun — but the hatchback does provide an enjoyable drive. It doesn’t hit the mark of a hot hatch, however. The 168-horsepower fourcylinder is initially sprightly but runs out of steam around 4,000 rpm, and the Corolla’s steering is a bit feathery and it suffers from understeer in corners. But its small stature and peppiness does make for a not-so-boring commute. That diminutive size does come into play where room in the hatchback is concerned. While things are spacious for those in the front seats, it’s cramped for adults in the rear. The Toyota provides 18 cubic-feet of storage space with the rear seats erected, which goes against my aforementioned argument that hatches are just as accommodating as most similarly-sized crossovers. Sure, it’ll haul home the groceries, but hauling bulky items like large strollers will be a challenge. The Corolla sports the angular, trapezoidal styling of new Toyota’s, but unlike other offerings, it seems to fit well on the hatchback. While there are not many frills to the interior styling, it’s simple, clean and user-friendly. The interior also features an 8-inch

infotainment panel, USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa connectivity (sorry, Android users), LATCH anchors for the rear seats and a leather steering wheel as standard on the base SE trim with added amenities in the XSE level. While the Corolla hatch is not powered by radioisotopes, it won’t cripple your wallet while filling up with old-fashioned gasoline. Estimated fuel economy is 31 combined mpg in the SE with a manual transmission and 36 combined in the automatic. Unlike Asimov, I’m not one for making predictions. However, if you are in the market for a small, affordable, not too frilly but well-equipped and peppywithout-being-a-hot-hatch hatchback, I’ll forecast your approval of the Corolla.
