FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office deputies were placed on administrative leave after they were involved in a fatal shooting with a man who was reportedly armed. At 10:37 p.m. on Sept. 12, the Sheriff’s Office received a call about a dispute between two men on Grand Prix Street in northeast Forsyth County. Shots were also reportedly fired between the two.

When deputies arrived, one man was taken into custody. The other man was reported in a house across the street, and deputies ordered him outside. The man reportedly refused. The Crisis Negotiations and the SWAT teams arrived on the scene, and the man would intermittently come outside holding a firearm, then quickly retreat back inside. When the man came outside eventually, he confronted the deputies with a handgun and shotgun. He reportedly refused to surrender the firearms and pointed them in the direction

of the deputies. The deputies then shot the man because they “feared for their safety” and needed to “stop the threat,” according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies administered first aid to the man, and he was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died. Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigations conduct an independent investigation into the incident. The deputies involved have been placed on routine administrative leave.

Fentanyl-laced pills lead to Roswell death

ROSWELL, Ga. — A federal grand jury has indicted and arraigned an Atlanta man on federal charges related to the distribution of fentanyl, a powerful opioid, that led to a fatal overdose in Roswell. Edward Culton, 25, faces charges of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, seven counts of aiding and abetting the distribution of fentanyl and one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. In similar charges, a Roswell drug dealer allegedly supplied by Culton has pleaded guilty to distributing fentanyl. The alleged fentanyl distribution has resulted in two overdoses, one of which ended in death, said U.S. Attorney Byung “BJay” Pak. Culton had distributed pills laced with fentanyl that were disguised to look as Roxicodone tablets, Pak said. Between September 2017-February 2018, Culton allegedly supplied Hu-

bert Nathans, 29, a drug dealer in the Roswell area, with hundreds of fake Roxicodon pills. Nathans then sold a number of these pills to a man who died from an overdose on Oct. 3, 2017. Nathans then sold a pill to a woman who overdosed. “This counterfeit ‘pill peddler’ was a menace to society,” said Robert J. Murphy, the special agent in charge of the DEA Atlanta Field Division. “Pills in the underground drug market are often diluted with dangerous and deadly substances, as was the case in this investigation. Purchasing pills on the street is synonymous to playing Russian roulette, as there’s no quality control or efficacy in the process.” This case is presented as a part of Operation SCOPE (Strategically Combatting Opioids through Prosecution and Enforcement), an initiative launched by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to partner with federal and local law enforcement to fight illegally prescribed painkillers, heroin, and synthetic opioids. – Julia Grochowski

County funds drug intervention counselor for Gateway Academy By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — More than 70 percent of students who come to Forsyth County’s at-risk school, Gateway Academy, are there because of a drug or alcohol offense at their former school. Of the students at Gateway, more than 80 percent have said they use drugs or alcohol weekly. To help fight the addiction problem, the Forsyth County Commission voted Sept. 11 to approve a drug intervention counselor at the school. The recommendation comes from the county Social Services Committee, which suggested allocating $35,000 of its 2018 budget to fund the counselor. The Board of Education will be responsible for hiring, funding and commencing the position. The funding is contingent on the Sheriff’s Office allocating $10,000 of its funds for the position, making the total allocation $45,000, for a three-year trial that is renewable each year. Additionally, support groups will be offered twice per week, along with individual counseling. The counselor will facilitate and provide a group with a culture of positive peer support, on-going individual and group counseling, and drug-free activities. County Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said the board often talks about being proactive instead of reactive. The Social Services Committee was funding with a program like this in mind, she said. “We talk a lot about prevention,” she said. “This is a different kind of program, but it’s one I can’t think of any greater need. This is a program we believe will

have the greatest impact to keep kids from going into furthering themselves into drug or juvenile court or the jail. This will be a cost-saving measure to the county by investing into the kids right now.” The Academies of Creative Education in Forsyth County, including Gateway Academy, Principal Drew Hayes and Director of The Insight Program Matt Meyer spoke to the commission about the need for the counselor. Gateway Academy is for students who get in trouble at their previous school and are no longer able to continue there, Hayes said. In the 2017-18 school year, the academy served 204 students ranging from 11 to 19-yearsold. Students’ needs included English as a second language, homeless or attendance issues. The Insight Program provides drug abuse treatment for young adults. “The opioid crisis is huge news nationwide and has a firm stronghold here in Forsyth,” Meyer said. “We work with 18-25 year olds at our treatment facility in Roswell. The average young adult opiate addict in the Insight Treatment Program is approximately 22-years-old. A large portion of the young adults we treat come from the North Fulton and Forsyth County areas.” Meyer first noticed the growth in opiate addiction 10 years ago. A large part of the problem that led to the heroin epidemic came from the over prescription of opioids, he said. With few exceptions, most young adults Meyer works with who have heroin or opioid addictions began using alcohol and marijuana. “If they have that addictive trait coupled with the normal self-esteem is-

Also at the meeting, the commission:

• Approved 11 new school resource officer positions and a budget increase of $633,000 for 2018 in additional revenue to offset increased funding for the 2018 school resource officer program • Approved the use of a portion of grant funding for a $200,000 consultant transit study. A match of $50,000 is required and the study will occur in 2019. • Approved an award to Geaux Bikes for a bike share program on the Greenway at no cost to Forsyth County. • Accepted $10,139 for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Award. • Accepted the Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant for 2019-21 not to exceed $1,652,080 with a cash match not to exceed $1,026,968. sues that teenagers go through, they are highly susceptible to that drug problem progressing,” Meyer said. “This starts a cycle that is incredibly difficult to battle on the back end.” The most at-risk students in Forsyth County are under the supervision of Hayes, he said. “Over 70 percent of our students had a drug or alcohol offense at their school which means they came to school with alcohol or showed up high,” Hayes said. “Over 80 percent of our students admit

to weekly drug or alcohol use.” Early intervention is key to addressing the opiate crisis, Meyer said. “These kids are from all corners of Forsyth County,” he said. “They are high-risk kids who live and participate in every school. If we’re able to deal with an adolescent that has a moderate drug and alcohol abuse issue, I whole heartedly believe we can make a huge impact on the opiate crisis here in Forsyth County over the next three to five years.”

Suicide summit explains ‘ripple effect’ in community By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Krista Wagner admits to feeling uncomfortable discussing her son Logan’s death, but she still took the stage at the second annual Suicide Summit Sept. 10 hoping to help others. “If I gently go over the details because it makes me uncomfortable, the killer suicide continues to win,” Wagner said to the crowd at the Forsyth Conference Center. “This killer feeds on our fears, relying on us to avoid the taboo topic. It relishes in our pain and thus gains more power. It whispers lies to its victims like a soothing mother. Suicide preys on our ignorance in order to continue this epidemic.” Wagner was one of several speakers at the Summit who spoke on the topic because she said she is “at war” with it after her son, who was a student at West Forsyth High School, died by suicide in 2016. Logan had reached out to his school counselor on a Thursday and was told the next available appointment was on the following Monday. But he took his own life that Fri-

day, Aug. 5, 2016. Wagner decided to tell her family’s story and explain how it created a “ripple effect” with others in hopes of helping parents see warning signs or reach out to those who are struggling. Education can be the first step. In Georgia, data from 2012 to2014 places suicide in the top 10 leading causes of death for individuals ages 10-64, said Suicide Prevention Director Walker Tisdale with the Georgia Department of Behavioral health and Developmental Disabilities. It’s the second leading cause of death for people ages 25-34 and third leading cause of death for those from ages 10-24. According to state data from the Georgia Department of Public Health, 1,274 people died from suicide in 2015. Warning signs of an impending suicide include: • Talking about wanting to die • Putting affairs in order, such as giving away belongings and saying goodbyes • Looking for a way to kill oneself • T alking about feeling hopeless, having no purpose, feeling

Students thriving in dual language immersion program By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Students involved in Forsyth County Schools’ dual language immersion program have been flourishing since the program launched this semester. The classes, already in place in middle and high schools, were dropped from the elementary school curriculum in 2010. But, the Board of Education approved reintroducing the program at interested elementary schools this fall. Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Fonda Harrison said starting in kindergarten, students spend half their day learning academic content, including math, science and target language literacy by an immersion teacher. The other half of their day, including English/language arts, social studies and literacy, will be taught in English by an English-speaking teacher. Three school principals indicated interest in implementing the program within the next few years, including Brandywine Elementary, Cumming Elementary and Kelly Mill Elementary. Kelly Mill is the only school doing one-way immersion for students because its population is primarily English-native

speakers. “If we expand in the future, we will have schools that will be on the one-way and two-way side,” Harrison said. “The goals are proficiency in English and a new language, academic achievement and intercultural competence. It will take a few years because they’re learning that math content in Spanish.” The program will not be a traditional world language class but an instructional model. Additionally, a team of two teachers will collaborate to teach all subject material. Kelly Mill Principal Ron McAllister said the principals have seen many positive aspects to the program across all three schools. Parent support has been strong, McAllister said, and professional development has helped teachers. “At Kelly Mill we’ve seen a broadened cultural awareness, not just in the target language of Spanish, but we had our morning news broadcast this week, which is run entirely by kids, in Greek,” he said. “Last week a student delivered it in Russian, and the one before was in Spanish. We have lots of languages represented and it’s been really cool to see their faces light up when they’re acknowledged and recognized.” Cumming Elementary Principal Lee

FORSYTH COUNTY SCHOOL/Special

Students at Cumming Elementary School enjoy learning how to speak another language through the dual language immersion program. Ann Rice said the program has been a “fabulous adventure.” One of the biggest accomplishments, she said, is seeing student confidence levels rising. “When we started, we have crying in kindergarten usually so I was worried we’d have even more when we’re speaking Spanish half the day,” Rice said. “But we did not. It’s been amazing to see how much the community and staff has embraced this. When the classes

are walking down the hall, teachers are trying to learn more Spanish so they can speak to the students and the teachers.” Brandywine Elementary Principal Todd Smith said his students are adjusting well to the transition. “We have a current wait list and ended up adding several from that list,” Smith said. “We are planning to have an observation day for parents over the next few weeks.”

Deal talks business, traffic and Forsyth County By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Over his nearly eight years in office, Gov. Nathan Deal has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. He has overseen creation of more than 675,000 private sector jobs, and Georgia has consistently ranked as one of the best states in the country for business. Now, in his last few months as governor, Deal is wrapping up his time in office and sat down with several local Rotary Clubs Sept. 12 to talk about business, traffic and Forsyth County. Rotary Clubs from South Forsyth, Lanier-Forsyth, Forsyth County, Johns Creek, North Forsyth 400 and Dawson County were in attendance. “Some of you have known me for a long time,” Deal said. “Most of you are new to this area, from my perspective. My first entre into elected political office started in the 1980 election cycle. At that time, the senatorial district I was elected to included about half of Forsyth County, all of Hall County and half of Jackson County. I have represented Forsyth County literally since I was sworn in as a state

senator in 1981.” From there to Congress, Forsyth County citizens continued to be Deal’s constituents while he represented the 9th Congressional District, and during his term as governor. “This county probably signifies the growth that is emblematic of our state, as good, if not better than any county in the state of Georgia,” Deal said. When Georgia was first named the No. 1 state for business in 2013 by Site Selection magazine, Deal said that was a first for the state. “We have maintained it every year since then,” he said. “That is indicative of an external observation about where our state is. We are very pleased with that designation.” But there have also been a lot of things that have changed since he’s been in office. When he was elected in 2011, the state, like many, was still in the grips of a major recession with an unemployment rate of about 10 percent. Today, the unemployment rate is at 3.9 percent. “The last time we saw a rate that low was in July of 2001, well before the recession hit,” Deal said. “Those new jobs are now in excess of 700,000 new pri-

Gov. Nathan Deal praised Forsyth County for its booming economic development. vate sector jobs in the last seven and a half years. It grows every day. Today, we announced 600 new jobs in Columbus, Georgia. We’re seeing those announcements virtually every day.” The world is starting to discover Georgia and Forsyth County, and he credits that to the reputation the state has for business, including maintaining the highest bond rating of AAA with the country’s three rating agencies over the past 21 years. Very few other states have achieved this, Deal said. Forsyth County has helped maintain that same stellar record, Deal said, due to its economic development and investment. “This is part of a region which has benefitted greatly from economic growth,” he said. “In this region, there have been some 244 economic development projects and created almost 12,000

new jobs in the last seven years.” Traffic is often at the forefront of Georgians minds, and on the morning of Deal’s talk in Forsyth County, he cut the ribbon for the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes, which created reversible express lanes along Interstate 75 and Interstate 575. “A robust transportation network is one of the most vital components for sustained economic development, and establishing solid infrastructure is essential for managing the transportation needs of our residents, business community and visitors,” Deal said at the ribbon cutting. “This corridor of I-75 has seen significant growth in the past two decades and while no one strategy can wholly eliminate traffic congestion, we are combining innovative transportation options like reversible express lanes to ensure more consistent and reliable trip times.”

Altrusa supports efforts to keep girls in school By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — For many young women in developing countries, getting their period isn’t an exciting time but a time to worry because most aren’t able to attend school due to a lack of resources. That’s where Days for Girls steps in to help by collecting feminine supplies to send to the impoverished to help them get back to school and work while staying healthy during their cycle. The group sends kits to other communities including underwear, pads and soap, and the local North Georgia chapter of Altrusa is considering donating their time, money and skills to the project. Altrusa is an international nonprofit focused on community service. North Georgia Altrusa President Mary Kirley said the group voted to support Days for Girls because it tugged at their hearts. “If you’re a girl, you get it,” Kirley said. “In our country we don’t get it. Gail, you get it, and hopefully now we can, too.” Since starting in 2008, Days for Girls have reached more than one million women and girls globally.

Gail Tyree volunteers with Days for Girls’ Atlanta chapter and spoke to at the Altrusa meeting on Sept. 11. There are thousands of groups worldwide who make and deliver the kits to the girls, Tyree said. “When my grandmother was growing up, they used rags,” she said. “But these ladies don’t even have rags. They’re using corn husks, moss and anything they can think of. If they don’t have anything, they’re missing school. The girls are missing a whole week of school a month. Eventually they fall behind in their studies and have to drop out. After a girl drops out, then they’re ready to get married and start a family.” That represents one in 10 girls in sub-Saharan Africa, 113 million adolescent girls in India and 30 percent of girls in rural Brazil who would have to miss school without the kits. More than half the kits go to Africa. “When 10 percent more girls go to school in their country, the gross national product increases by 3 percent,” Tyree said. “So if you can raise the woman up, you raise the whole country up.” Another aspect of Days for Girls is health education and in 2017, they reached more than 244,000 people. “They don’t know what’s going on

We educate what the changes are and that they’re normal. We tell them, ‘you are wonderfully and beautifully made.’ Without women we would not have next generations. In a lot of the societies where we go, it’s the men, boys, cattle then the women. So we tell them they have a purpose, this is what it’s for, it’s beautiful and natural.” The group has to be aware of the cultures in the countries they visit so they don’t clash with their standards. In In-

dia, for example, Tyree said during their periods the girls are segregated from the boys, especially in the rural areas. “We try to empower the girls and educate them as to what’s going on and how to take care of it,” she said. “We also tell them about safety and what’s going on at night to be in groups and that they do have the right to say no. They’re trying to educate the whole society.” To donate to Days for Girls, visit daysforgirls.org. James A. Johnston was 19 years-old when he and his regiment began their 600-mile march to Gettysburg in 1862. And he was 95 when he returned there Chadwick for the 75th Commemoration of that battle in 1938. It seems impossible to think that James and 2 year-old John McCain could have both attended that event. When I realized that my sister (who is still living) had been bounced upon that man’s knee, it made that ancient Civil War something brand new and very real to me. My mother‘s grandfather - a freer of slaves. What could have made him go? How did the issue of slavery have real relevance to him or to his community? And then, what about the other 360,000 northern soldiers who lost their lives in the interest of others. Imagine the negative impact of leaving families made up of women and children to face the natural dangers of a world without any convenience; with real vulnerability to much worse. This choice was made purposefully. Was it actually undertaken to gain the freedom of strangers? People whose welfare had no direct impact on these men or the lives of those they loved. I have come to understand that they were defining the nation they wanted America to exemplify: A country built on

freedom. This was a time of nation building - by farmers and teachers and blacksmiths and barbers. Justice and righteousness were the tools of a people determined to create a civil society. Their intention was to create individual sovereignty unlike the monarchies of Europe and the rest of the world. So how is it possible to have a conversation about race in America that is not informed by the sacrifice of those 360,000 mostly white men given to gain the freedom of slaves? I once felt like a revolutionary when I boarded buses to walk in Washington DC with Dr. King, but I was not; not anymore than those who choose now to take a knee. In a world where we are all hungry for evidence of wisdom, or even commonsense - for compassion and natural virtue, I offer this column. It will be about how human experience is altered by those serving ideas or ideals beyond their own personal needs. How real transformation is possible when communities of people join to build solutions to inequality. You will be inspired by their insight, but I also hope you’ll be empowered by them to join in building a more civil and inclusive society. “Do not despair of our present difficulties. We believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here.” John McCain, 1936-2018. Be a part of the conversation: lee@real-altruists.com www.real-altruists.com

It takes a village… and good transit Kathleen Sturgeon Editor kathleen@appenmediagroup.com

One of the best parts of being a journalist is getting to meet many different types of people from all walks of life. I love getting to hear why people are passionate about their community, their family’s history and how they’re working to make their hometown

a better place. But with that comes the gloomy stories of houses being torn down due to new development or homeless children who stuff food into their pockets during school lunches to bring home to their younger siblings. That latter story is one I heard last week while I was covering a fence installation at Fill Ministries in north Forsyth. Fill Ministries grows the food used by Meals by Grace which feeds thousands of hungry kids in our community ever year. It’s a noble effort, and I enjoyed seeing the community rally around Fill Ministries Founder Stephen Daniels and his farm to help future families. But that’s not the story that stuck out to me the most. Years ago, Daniels and his wife were at church one Sunday giving out bags of food to the hungry. He felt good about his efforts until the end of the event when plenty of bags were left. At first, Daniels said he was shocked to see all this food sitting there not being picked up. He quickly learned the real reason was so many people in the community don’t have reliable transportation. These are people who truly need just a little bit of help in the form of food or other necessities who are unable to even reach the help being offered. That’s what inspired Daniels to create Fill Ministries. His story got me thinking. When will we decide as a community enough is enough? I’ve lived in Alpharetta basically my entire life and I’ve been involved as a professional journalist for nearly four years, so I’ve heard plenty of pros and cons regarding MARTA moving north. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, most of the anti-transit rhetoric is frankly ridiculous. We have families, children and workers who can’t make it to a job, school or a church to pick up food because they don’t have a car, or it broke down, and

When I was in Boston a few weeks ago, I quickly mastered the train system, traveling to Salem for a day trip, and taking it all over town to explore. When I was in Boston a few weeks ago, I quickly mastered the train system, traveling to Salem for a day trip, and taking it all over town to explore. It was so easy, quick and affordable, we mostly opted to use it rather than Uber or Lyft. So why can’t we figure it out here? For anyone thinking, “it’ll bring crime here!” Let me stop you right there. I read hundreds of police reports every week from Forsyth County and I consistently see the same issues regarding burglaries, fights and domestic violence. I hate to break it to you, but crime is already here. With the community growing bigger by the day, it is inevitable “bad people” will come, too. But there have always been people looking to do harm. Giving them access to a station won’t increase the chances you see someone stealing a big screen TV onto a MARTA train. For starters, where would they even hide it? But that shouldn’t deter lawmakers from making a far larger scope of people have an easier and better life. It’s time we start to see how much potential our area and its people have and let them show it by giving them the option of better transit. Maybe then we won’t have to create charities to deliver basic necessities to hungry kids because we’re “too scared” of what reliable transportation will bring.

Printers were a mistake Just don’t print things. It’s not worth it. For the past few weeks, without fail, when I’ve gone to print something, the printer fails on me. Think of a printer Julia Grochowski error, and I’ve probably encountered it. Reporter julia@appenmediagroup.com Paper jam? Check. Low toner? Check. Streaks making text illegible? Check. Some combo of “toner,” “spool,” “tray,” and “error”? Check. No magenta? Can’t print a black and white document now. No paper? Well, actually, there is. The tray is overflowing in abundance. “I’ll just take some out,” I say, foolishly. “Or better yet, spoon feed it one page at a time.” But it’s not enough. No amount is good enough to register for the printer. No lowly document you have is good enough for the printer to deign to acknowledge, let alone print. The printer knows you’re in a hurry when you press “Print.” It knows you’ve got something important in the queue. It knows your handwriting is so awful that you need to print out anything you write so people, yourself included, can actually read it. It smells desperation. And. Thrives. On. It. Guttenburg had his heart in the

right place, creating the printing press – a beautiful marvel of a machine. It helped create books, after all, one of my favorite things in the world. And don’t forget the paper this is printed on right now. No, commercial printers are off the hook. I’m talking about the home printers and office printers, the ones that always laugh when you send them a document, print off half of it, and then eat the rest with a horrible mechanical grinding noise. That half of the paper that sticks out tauntingly during a paper jam always looked like the printer was sticking its tongue out at me. “You almost had me,” it says. What’s the solution? I don’t know. Maybe it’s the printer’s way of trying to become green in a more ecoconscious world. You can’t litter if you can’t even print off the litter first, after all. Maybe it’s the printer’s way of trying to gently stage an intervention. “You’re really becoming too reliant on paper,” it might say. “It’s starting to become a problem. I mean, just look at how many papers surround you at any given moment. You really need to tone it down a bit.” Or maybe, the printer is just lonely. Maybe the printer errors are just its way of saying that it wants me to slow down in life and spend more time with it, so it’s warm, mechanical whrrrrs can lull me to sleep. I’m sure there’s a life lesson in here somewhere. When I figure it out, I’ll be sure to print it off for you.

West Forsyth earns first win of season over Peachtree Ridge By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com West Forsyth 28, Peachtree Ridge 7 West Forsyth posted its first win of the season Friday night by downing Peachtree Ridge in a battle of winless teams. A touchdown reception from Garrett Woodall put West on top early, and the Lions responded with their sole touchdown of the game before the half. West scored on its opening two possessions of the third quarter, including a long touchdown run set up by an interception by the Wolverines defense. West’s defense kept the Lions off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest to earn its first win since last October. In the two programs’ only other meeting, the Lions knocked West out of the first round of the 2015 playoffs. West Forsyth faces Tennessee powerhouse McCallie on Sept. 21 in its final non-region game. Kennesaw Mountain 48, North Forsyth 47 (OT) Kennesaw Mountain prevailed over North Forsyth Friday night in an offensive shootout and heartbreaking loss for the Raiders. Both teams put on an offensive showcase, exchanging blows throughout. However, the ultimate decider came with special teams play. With the score tied at 41, North Forsyth missed a potential game-winning 45-yard field goal in the final seconds of regulation. In overtime, Kennesaw Mountain rushed for a score. While North responded with a touchdown, the PAT was no

The Danes fell to Class 3A’s Dawson County in a battle of undefeated teams. Denmark and Dawson were tied at 14-14 after one quarter, but Dawson scored two touchdowns and hit a field goal to lead by three scores at the half. The Danes (3-1) were held to a single score, a Ben Whitlock pass, late in the fourth quarter. Denmark will now focus on its challenging Region 7-AAAA schedule which begins Sept. 21 against Chestatee. Whitefield Academy 20, Pinecrest Academy 6 Pinecrest Academy dropped to 0-2 in region play with a loss to Whitefield Academy on the road Friday night. Whitefield held a 10-point advantage at the half and extended their lead late in the fourth quarter to deny Pinecrest a comeback

attempt. Pinecrest (1-3, 0-2) will be on the road again Sept. 21 against Walker. Fellowship Christian 41, Stratford Academy 14 Fellowship Christian earned revenge over Stratford Academy, who ousted the Paladins from the 2017 playoffs, Friday night at home. The Paladins remained unbeaten (4-0, 2-0) in their final matchup with a non-region opponent. Fellowship scored the opening 34 points of the game which included an 84-yard touchdown rush from sophomore Murphy Reeves and a touchdown pass from Brooks Bryant to Jordan Brewer. After Stratford scored early in the fourth quarter, Reeves had another long touchdown rush of 71 yards. The Paladins return to region play Sept. 21 against defending Region 6-A champions Mount Paran. Mount Paran 42, King’s Ridge 7 King’s Ridge came up short against defending Region 6-A champions Mount Paran in the Tigers’ region opener Friday night. The loss puts King’s Ridge at 0-3. Mount Paran scored five first-half touchdowns, including three in a fourminute span in the second quarter, to power their win. The Tigers’ lone score came on a rush from quarterback Braxton Chadwick who ran in from 35 yards late in the fourth. The Tigers continue region play on the road against Mount Pisgah on Sept. 21. Alpharetta 26, Pope 14 Defending Region 7-AAAAAA champions Alpharetta began their region slate with a win over Pope in Marietta Friday

night. The Raiders’ victory was their third straight over the Greyhounds. Kevin Watkins put Alpharetta on the scoreboard with a 24-yard rush late in the first quarter before Pope tied the game late in the second period. Another touchdown rush from Watkins put the Raiders back in the lead, but the Greyhounds took advantage of a Raiders fumble to knot the game midway through the fourth. Alpharetta responded quickly with a 92-yard pass from Will Gerdes to Austin Frazier, but the PAT was missed, making the score 20-14. After forcing a punt on Pope’s ensuing drive, Alpharetta took valuable minutes off the clock and iced the game with a touchdown rush from Dylan Merrell with just over a minute remaining. With the win, head coach Jacob Nichols now has the most wins (35) among Alpharetta head coaches. Alpharetta (2-1, 1-0) will be on the road again Sept. 21 against Dunwoody. Centennial 69, Cambridge 35 Centennial set a program record for most points scored in a game with an offensive showcase and 69 points Friday night against Region 7-AAAAAA opponent Cambridge. The Knights scored 35 points in the first half, and Cal Dickie rushed for four touchdowns. The victory gives Centennial a 2-0 record to start their region schedule. Their last region loss came in the region opener against Alpharetta last season. After a bye week, Centennial faces Alpharetta on Sept. 28. Cambridge dropped to 1-1 in region play and travels to face North Atlanta on Sept. 21.

City further refines code for future North Point development Plan sets theme for revitalization within district By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A framework for major revitalization of Alpharetta’s North Point area could be in place within the next two months. Alpharetta city leaders met with TSW design consultant Caleb Racicot Sept. 11 for a special workshop to hammer out final details of revised zoning and building requirements for the district. With two massive mixed-use developments completed over the past 10 years, the city is now turning its focus to North Point, which has suffered sizeable losses recently with the closures of Sears and Toys ‘R’ Us retailers. “We’re focusing now on the North Point corridor much like the city focused on Avalon and City Center in the past,” Mayor Jim Gilvin said. Avalon, which opened four years ago, and the nearly completed City Center already have established momentum as commercial and residential attractions. “We want to continue to make sure that City Center turns out like it needs to and downtown continues to grow and prosper,” Gilvin said. “We still want to make sure Avalon keeps its crown as being a dynamic location. But they’re in different stages now. They have their momentum, while we’ve got to get that momentum started in North Point.” The focus of the workshop was to put the final touches on codes governing the size, uses and makeup of developments

for North Point. Much of the discussion revolved around development requirements that fit into a designation for an ecodistrict — an urban planning method that integrates sustainable development and reduces the ecological footprint of projects. Racicot presented a slate of suggestions governing allowable uses and building sizes for construction in the district. Suggestions included, for example, setting percentages for the amount of space a building should set aside for community or amenity space. Plans also call for limiting residential-use building sizes to a maximum footprint of 50,000 square feet. Racicot said the residential codes were meant to fit between the allowances provided at Avalon and at City Center for residential. The code also suggests limiting density to eight units per acre in most cases. Most of the discussion at the workshop focused on requirements for open space. Racicot said the plan is set up with open space requirements in the zoning and the overlays within the district. Our initial proposal to exempt smaller sites from open space standards may have been too extreme,” Racicot said. For a non-residential development would be required to have at least 5 percent amenity space, things like outdoor dining or a rooftop patio. City Councilman John Hipes suggested that sliding back the scale for open space requirements on smaller developments might encourage developers to pursue more small tracts to circum-

Community Development Director Kathi Cook said she doubts anyone would take that approach because each property is governed by setback requirements, and that would deter developers from taking a piecemeal approach to building. Though there was no general consensus among council members, one idea was to apply a uniform percentage devoted to civic or amenity space to all developments, possibly 15 percent. One suggestion was to give smaller properties leeway in how the open space is used, whether for private or public access. Other areas addressed at the workshop included determining block sizes, which are, for now, set with a perimeter of 1,600 feet. Following the workshop, the mayor

stressed that property owners will ultimately determine what’s to be built at North Point. The city, he said, is trying to provide some guidelines that follow the North Point Livable Centers Initiative. “I think the general consensus is we want to be an area at North Point that is walkable, does have the same type of mixed-use development that’s in Avalon or City Center but with a focus more on technology and greenspace – actual living things like trees and grass where people can relax and get away for a little bit,” Gilvin said. Barring any snags, the updated codes and overlay for the district should be ready to go before the Alpharetta Planning Commission in October, then be considered for City Council approval the following month.

Sandy Springs eyes north end redevelopment Knowing when Task force suggests economic incentives Sandy Springs has put together a task force charged with coming up with a residential and retail strategy for the north end of its city – namely that stretch of Ga. 9 that runs from Abernathy Road Geoff smith north to Roswell’s Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com southern border on the river. This long stretch of state highway could very well be one of the most nondescript developed roads in North Fulton. The area was mostly developed in the 1980s when strip malls and contemporary condos were in fashion, and when there was no City of Sandy Springs and every developer with half a pulse got approval for projects from a very distant Fulton County government in downtown Atlanta. Growing up in Roswell, the only time we really went south of the River on 9 was when my Pop Warner football team traveled to play those Sandy Springs Saints. When I got to high school, because I lived on the East Side of Roswell, I got to attend Crestwood High School. The school was just south of the river and east of Ga. 9. It was built in the 1970s and put out of its misery in 1991. If you ever saw Crestwood, you’d know what I mean. (The fact that the building was mostly demolished after only 20 years of existence should say something.) It was rebuilt and today is a much-improved Sandy Springs Middle School. There were great memories there. Our football team could very well have been the most conditioned team in the state. We didn’t win a whole lot, but there was a huge hill surrounding most of our practice field. And if you would have

Before every game, we’d get in the buses and head over to a nearby Steak and Ale for steaks and potatoes. Today, that restaurant is the North River Tavern. There are many reasons to know about the North River Tavern. But for some of you, it is the place on the other side of the river that you go to after Canton Street shuts down. It kind of reminds me of the bar in the old movie “Footloose” that they’d go to just outside the city limits so they could dance. If you are not Ubering to the North River Tavern after midnight, the other reasons you might head down this stretch of road is to avoid Ga. 400 traffic, or to get your tag or driver’s license renewed. A select few of you might also be heading from the Ferrari dealership in Alpharetta down to the Lamborghini dealership. The area has been largely ignored. Since becoming a city in 2005, Sandy Springs has had its hands full with organizing a government that suddenly had oversight of more than 105,000 residents and a workforce that includes the headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies, numerous regional headquarters and more than 5,500 businesses. But by a wide margin, most of that is south of Abernathy Road. There is a huge difference between north and south Sandy Springs. According to a report the city published earlier this year, the median in-

come of residents living in the southern part of the city is $102,960, while those living on the north end earn $57,595. In a recent article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul said he appointed members of the nonprofit community to the task force to ensure this area remains affordable for those on the lower end of the income ladder. These include “people who work in the restaurants and retail stores, and in landscaping and other jobs that we collectively call the essential economy,” he said. “People working at the hospitals, teachers, police and firefighters, and middle managers in the corporate realm.” One member of the task force said it will look at ways to incentivize redevelopment that will “change some of the retail development patterns.” The article mentioned Tax Allocation Districts, Community Improvement Districts and new transit improvements that could have a significant impact on this stretch of road. A key success factor for small business owners is knowing when they need help. Do you reach out internally and externally to others when you think you need help? dick jones Assistance Founder & President Jones Simply Sales from others can make a big difference in getting things done, and not having to learn something from scratch if you can get help from someone else. When you start a new small business, it seems like you need to learn a million new things. Well, maybe not a million, but it’s a very lengthy list of things you’ll either need to learn how to do, or get help from someone else. For example, small business owners are responsible for their operations, sales, financial and risk management, hiring and retaining staff, information technology, taxes and many other things. No small business owner knows everything about everything. If you’re running a small business, think hard about what your core competencies are. Equally important is knowing when you need help. With the areas you lack competence in, you have two options: learn how to do it yourself; or hire someone or use an outside contractor who has the skills you don’t. There is no problem trying to learn new skills and being able to do more on your own, but the compromise is the time that it takes. Knowing when you need help will ultimately help you run your small business more successfully.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The haunted house on the corner of South Main Street and Wills Road is making way for a new senior housing community. The old House on Horror Hill building, a Halloween favorite among residents, was recently demolished to make way for construction on the Village at Wills Park. The Alpharetta City Council approved the 130-unit project last June on the seven acres that formerly housed the haunted house, a place of worship and a barn. The project is being developed by

Village Park Senior Living, which has existing branches in Peachtree Corners and on Morris Road in Alpharetta. The new Wills Road location will offer a “unique, farmhouse-style senior living community” made up of assisted living and memory care. The developer’s plans include a main building and several single-story cottages and duplexes, as well as an independent living portion. As set forth by one of the conditions, the exteriors of these buildings will be made up of at least 40 percent stone or brick. A bus shelter will likewise be built near the development. Five oak trees within the property will be preserved.

Appen Media welcomes interns ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Two Milton High School seniors are taking on the role of intern with Appen Media this school year. Jillian DiMarco is from Alpharetta and hopes to go to Auburn University next year to DiMARCO study journalism and mass communications. DiMarco is involved in the National Honors Society, student council and is the girls varsity tennis captain. She said she plans to use her communication skills at her internship, while she masters AP Style and learns techniques that will help her in college and at a future job. “I wanted to intern with a newspaper because I love to write and wanted to get the hands-on experience,” DiMarco said. “I chose Appen because I live down the street from their office and wanted to be able to have people I know read my

A DIY Best Practice for Planning

Don’t risk your financial goals

And you DON’T need a lawyer.

How much risk are you willing to take to achieve your financial goals? You might think you can handle a lot of risk – but during a market downturn, if your investments decline in value, your risk tolerance will be tested. If you find yourself getting upset over short-term drops, you may need to lower your portfolio’s overall risk level. On the other hand, if you think you have a low risk tolerance and you start off investing quite conservativeBURNS ly, you might find that you’re taking on another type of risk – the risk of not reaching your objectives, such as a comfortable retirement. So, you may need to add more growth-oriented investments. And your risk tolerance can change over time. When you’re starting out in your career, you have time to overcome losses, so you can possibly afford to take on more risk. But when you’re retired, you may need to shift some of your more risky, growth-seeking investments into more conservative, income-producing ones. Become familiar with your own risk tolerance – it can play a big role in your investment decisions. This is Chris Burns, your Edward Jones financial advisor in Cumming, GA. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call, 770205-1579.

By Michelle Wilson, Wilson Legal, PC Verifying your beneficiary designations for your accounts is a critical step in maintaining your estate plan. Companies and employers are not always organized and sometimes lose records or are victims of data theft. In today’s environment, even hackers can get away with your important information. I had a case that lasted three years because an employer lost the change of beneficiary form for the husband’s life insurance. Husband wanted to leave the life insurance to his second wife and reduced the amount to cover the mortgage and his truck. We had the canary copy of the three-ply change form with his signature. The court, however, decided against us

even though we were right on the facts and right on the law. The wrong decision was made and there was nothing I or any other attorney could do to fix it. This case almost made me quit the practice of law. Now, I help families do this one chore that you do not even need an attorney to do. I encourage my clients get confirmation of their beneficiary designations on company letterhead from each financial institution. Encouragement is not enough. We are introducing our beta version of our continuing care program this spring and beginning to enroll clients so that we can help them confirm the beneficiary designations periodically. We are super excited about this new program. Call today to request information about enrolling. Wilson Legal, PC 407 East Maple St. #105 Cumming, GA 30040 (770) 205-7861

Championing Community Champions Local banks succeed as their communities succeed. American Commerce Bank in Johns Creek makes it a priority to champion community efforts as well as the needs of its business and personal banking customers. Carlos Laverde, ACB’s Atlanta market president, is proud of the bank’s ongoing involvement. “Community events are a dynamic part of the North Fulton lifestyle, and it’s a privilege to support these efforts. We want to be aligned with the priorities of our customers.” Bank staff posed proudly with a plaque received recently from the Johns Creek Police Department. The plaque recognized ACB as a key sponsor of the 2018 Law Enforcement Torch Run held earlier this year. In addition to the sponsorship, several bank employees participated as runners. “We are contributors”, says Soraya Kenney, branch manager, “and it’s exciting to support the efforts of our thriving North Fulton communities.” ACB is also a proud supporter of the 2018 “Y IT MATTERS” campaign. The Isakson Alpharetta Family YMCA provides social support across North Fulton with after-school programs, youth development and wellness initiatives. ACB

is highlighting support for the “Y” in its 2018 advertising. American Commerce Bank offers commercial and personal banking services to the North Fulton markets from its branch in Johns Creek. The bank offers customized lending solutions and SBA loan programs as well as highly convenient on-line banking and treasury management services. The bank’s experienced staff pride themselves in knowing their customers by name and in meeting the needs of businesses and their employees. ACB’s participation in the nation-wide CDARS network enables it to offer FDIC deposit insurance on balances well in excess of the standard $250,000 limit. By providing such services, ACB “brings big banking products down to the community banking level”, according to Kenney. By catering lending and deposit services to the specific needs of business and consumer customers, ACB provides industry-leading solutions to support the growth and success of our communities. For more information about American Commerce Bank, stop by the branch located at 10690 Medlock Bridge Road, or visit www.AmericanCommerceBank. com

Thank you for voting us Best Burger BurgerFi is incredibly grateful to have been voted Best Burger for the FIFTH year in a row. It is truly inspiring to see our love for fresh all-natural food echoed in our community. Not only honored to be named Best Burger, but to also receive Best Family Dining, and runner up in Best Date Night and Best Dessert… We’re blown away. Of course great recognition only comes from cherished customers like you, so we thank you for encouraging us and supporting us! Why do we Taste so good? It’s pretty simple – our Angus Beef is 100% AllNatural, free-range, humanely treated, NEVER exposed to antibiotics, growth hormones, or steroids. We also believe fresh is best, so chopping, dicing and mixing is an everyday event in our kitchen. From the BurgerFi Sauce, Garlic Aioli and Tomato Bacon Jam to the fresh VegeFi patty (a solid crowd favorite) Hand Cut Fries and double battered Onion Rings - all are crafted here daily. BurgerFi is dedicated to always serving high quality food, so you can feel good about providing healthy, fresh food to your family. You’re welcome. What’s new you ask? The Beyond Burger, a vegan-friendly, plant based protein, that’s hormone-free, antibioticfree, GMO and soy free, with zero cholesterol. We offer The Beyond Burger in two ways: traditional style with onions, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese, or vegan green style either wrapped in lettuce or served on a vegan bun. You’ve been asking and we’ve heard you! Our next newbie is a Grilled Chicken Sandwich, another free-range,

no-hormone, no-steroid luxury with a tangy Honey Mustard BBQ sauce sure to please. Coming soon will be a signature Fi’ed Chicken Sandwich, it’s a delicately battered, crispy masterpiece we’ve perfected with Honey BBQ sauce, pickles, lettuce and tomato. Love avocado? Heard again! Recently introduced Fried Avocado (adding a unique crunch factor) is here to stay definitely don’t see this style everywhere! Just think of the delicious possibilities when you add avocado to your favorite burger. Tasty healthy choices for you to enjoy more variety each time you visit. Hey you can come at least twice a week now! Food is a huge part of what we do, but we’re committed to serve so much more than food. Your support enables us to continually increase our charitable giving, outreach and fundraising efforts. This year we are privileged to sponsor The Drake House, Pathways2Life, Foster Care Support Foundation, Homestretch, No Longer Bound plus numerous other groups with fundraising. Giving back to help others in our community is one of our greatest joys. THANK YOU for partnering with us on these efforts! Come see us soon and taste for yourself what all the fuss is about! Be sure to order some frozen custard so you’ll know which flavor is your favorite when voting BurgerFi for The Best Dessert again next year. 5475 Windward Pkwy, Alpharetta, GA 30004 On the go? Laser therapy comes to Johns Creek Class IV Laser Therapy is the most advanced pain relief technology available to the public and it’s now available right here in Johns Creek. Laser therapy uses a process called photo-bio-modulation to enhance your body’s ability to heal itself. Laser Therapy works by flooding the tissues with photons, energizing the damaged cells and increasing circulation to the painful area. Treatments are fast, painless and don’t require any down time but the therapeutic effect continues to soothe and heal long after you leave the office. Laser Therapy is FDA cleared to treat pain, inflammation, arthritis, and muscle spasms and are a great alternative to medications and injections. Laser Therapy can treat a host of conditions including rotator cuff injuries, post operative pain and soreness (for any surgery), frozen shoulder, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, neck pain, muscle strains, low back pain, migraines, and can even be used to relieve pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. Johns Creek Physical Therapy is the only medical practice in the area to offer Laser Therapy technology. “In the fourteen months we’ve had the Laser, I

am constantly amazed at what it does for our patients,” says Marc Stewart, PT, owner at Johns Creek Physical Therapy.

If you are experiencing any type of pain, Call 770-622-5344 to schedule your Free Consultation.

Voted Best Sports Organization for 2018 Doug Yearwood, President Alpharetta Ambush Soccer Club Alpharetta Ambush Soccer Club is located at Webb Bridge Park, 4780 Webb Bridge Rd., Alpharetta and been serving the community for more than 19 years. We are grateful for the thousands of players and families who have made this possible. When we opened our Club in Alpharetta in 1999, there were less than 75 players in the club. Best Physical Therapy Practice of North Atlanta Johns Creek Physical Therapy What does it take to be voted “Best Physical Therapy Practice of North Atlanta?” It takes several things.

WINNER 2018

Best Of North Atlanta Presented By

First, you must have a great staff with a helping attitude! Everyone at Johns Creek Physical Therapy excels at their role within the practice. From the greeting at the front desk, handling your insurance, to the actual therapy experience, we have the best in the business. Office manager Holly Casey leads the front office while Marc Stewart, PT (Physical Therapist), Mona Mistry, MPT (Master’s Degree of Physical Therapy) and Archana Jayan, DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy), evaluate and treat a host of orthopedic conditions. Supporting the therapy staff is Laura Ainley, PTA (Physical Therapist Assistant) and Denise Kuechenmeister, ATC (Athletic Trainer Certified). Our team brings a helping attitude with one goal in mind, and that’s your recovery. Second, you must have a commitment to customer service and a vested interest in helping your patients achieve their goals. 15 years ago when this practice was started, the slogan “The Way Therapy Should Be!” was adopted. This motto drives our commitment to our service. The staff at Johns Creek Physical Therapy knows the value of a customer! Too many times in health care people complain about feeling like they are just another number. We believe you should get first class personal service every time you come in. Our team is genuinely concerned with your well being and your success is our mission. Just listen to this testimonial from Roberta Goldberg:

“The staff at Johns Creek Physical Therapy is simply the best! Each staff member, from the front office staff to the therapists to Marc himself showed genuine interest in helping me completely recover from the condition and pain which brought me to their facility. I highly recommend Johns Creek Physical Therapy.” Third, you must have skilled Physical Therapists and offer the latest treatments and technology. The therapy team brings over 40 years of combined experience. This experience means there is not much we haven’t seen. It also means we can develop a plan of action that can resolve your problem quickly and easily. Every patient receives a customized plan of care tailored to their diagnosis. We treat a variety of orthopedic conditions from neck and shoulder pain all the way down to foot and heel pain and most everything in between. If you have had surgery, we can help with that too. We are the only practice in the area to offer Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Therapy. Laser Therapy is the most advanced form of pain relief available to the public and has been a great addition to our office. Also available are services like Trigger Point Dry Needling and manual therapy. There are a number of treatments and services available to help treat any condition.

Archana Jayan, DPT

For the past two years we have hosted a monthly educational seminar as part of our Health and Healing Seminar Series. These events can be found on our

Marc C. Stewart, PT

Johns Creek Physical Therapy, LLC

website at johnscreekpt.com and topics rotate each month. The topics covered include: Neck and Shoulder Pain, Back Pain and Sciatica, Hip and Knee Pain, as well as Foot and Heel Pain. These seminars are always informative and offer a lot of information on why you might be hurting. Finally, what makes Johns Creek Physical Therapy great? RESULTS! A friendly personality and a warm environment only go so far. You must get results for the patient. And results are what we are known for. Countless times our patients say, “My doctor couldn’t believe how much better I was doing!” We wonder why you would you ever expect anything less? Most of our patients are blown away at how quickly they recover. If you are currently doing physical therapy somewhere else and you’re still looking for answers, or maybe you went to the therapy “down the hall” from the doctor because you thought it would be convenient, but you’re not getting the results you were hoping for, give our office a call and come experience “The Way Therapy Should Be!” We’re so confident you will notice a difference, we will even offer you a FREE consultation with mention of this article. No physician referral is required unless specified by your insurance. Johns Creek Physical Therapy 4060 Johns Creek Parkway Suite H Suwanee, GA 30024

State of the art medical, robotic surgery experts for women The field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim, Dr. Stacey Pereira and Dr. Christy Kenkel of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day convenient in-office procedures that require no downtime and can be done in the office. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fast-growing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital

stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced

leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid

An interview with Dr. Taylor By Alyssa MacNamera I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win to ask him about his recent success. As we sit in the bright, clean, welcoming waiting room of Premier Dermatology, Dr. Taylor is holding his newborn son, his third boy, only 15 days old. He apologizes for the squeaks of the sleeping baby and smiles apologizing when those squeaks interrupt our interview. After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown. He is warm, instantly calming, respectful and shockingly intelligent. Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and surgical ability are well established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician. Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Atlanta! As a new practice, it is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone winning Best Vein Specialist 2 years in a row. To what do you attribute to your success? Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much! You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade. I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons. Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me. I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patient-centered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them. Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated into improved processes within my own practice. But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff! Given that we are a small practice with only 7 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients.

We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We’ve been open 18 months now and are constantly Dr. Taylor trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence. Is there something you feel sets yourself apart from the other physicians in the area? Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. (With a laugh) Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care. And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule. Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred out to other specialists, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and board-certified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with the ability to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques. Anything else you’d like to say? Dr. Taylor: I really just want to say thank you very much! Thank you to our staff: you are valued and wonderful and we wouldn’t be continuing to excel without each and every one of you! Also thank you so very much to all of our patients and our community! Your confidence and support is greatly appreciated and rewarding. I look forward to continuing to strive to provide patients with exceptional care.

Jordan Orthodontics thanks you By Dr. Jeff Jordan Wow! We just celebrated our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to help so many patients “Love your Smile!” My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives! Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years. We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last five years! You don’t win many awards after high school, so it is

a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 22,000 new patients over the years, so we have a little head start. Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. With the help of these visual aids, we can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options. Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation. No thank you list would be complete without thanking my mom and dad who helped me start my practice. Also, a large shout out to my office manager, Laurie Stinger, who has been on board from day one. Orthodontics is a team effort and at Jordan Orthodontics we have been blessed with great patients and a great team over the years! Thanks again!!! Dr J and team

Remodeling Expo Center North Atlanta’s remodeling powerhouse

This company has solved North Atlanta’s “Builder Grade” kitchen and bathroom problem for over 500 homeowners. And they’re just getting warmed up. Remodeling Expo Center was created over 18 years ago by Peter Schnieper and John Hogan, both former “Big Six” consultants, private equity partners and real estate developers. Impressive at first glance, but their real strength is building businesses through the recruitment of solid management and service delivery teams. Hogan speaks the language of a former venture capitalist using terms like scalability, ERP and design excellence, while Peter, who handles the installation department, speaks the language of building code compliance and manufacturers installation procedures. Remodeling Expo Center was created to offer cost effective and awesomely gorgeous remodeling solutions to the 30,000+ homes in North Atlanta, built in the 1980’s and 90’s with low grade or “builder grade” finishes. “We offer a rare combination of design, visualization, engineering and general contracting to homeowners. So they can know what

they can do, how much it will cost and using 3D Renderings, what it will look like. In about 4 days”. A “one stop shop” so to speak. Since openness and connectivity is the prevailing home design movement “can we move or eliminate that wall? Is the question we hear most frequently” says co-owner Peter Schnieper, “and the answer is always yes. We’re real general contractors and we have the electrical, structural, and carpentry resources to move any wall” The company uses a staff of certified designers to render the reinvented home with state of the art, mini super computers. “It’s so wonderful to see the homeowner’s eyes light up when they see the re-designed space” says John Hogan, “it’s like they get validation of what they’ve been imagining for the past 10 years”. They never proceeded with the project because no company could show them that it could be done. Hogan continues “homeowners get so excited about how beautiful it’s going to look and they’re even more excited about how easy it was.” To deliver this enormous amount of inspiration and design support to hundreds of homeowners per year, Remodeling Expo Center built an impressive Design Center where customers can interact with the company’s profession-

als, see kitchen and bathroom vignettes, and select form the awesome variety of granite, quartz, cabinetry, tile, plumbing fixtures, etc. The company’s Design Center is in downtown Roswell at 48 King Street. Business is expanding so rapidly that they are ing a second location in Alpharetta soon. Currently, their service area includes all of North Atlanta including Sandy Springs, Roswell, Marietta, Johns Creek, Norcross, Alpharetta, Brookhaven, Buckhead, Cumming, Woodstock, Dunwoody, Smyrna, Milton and other adjacent areas. Remodeling kitchens, bathrooms, basements or the whole house can be significant sums of money, so we are accustomed to answering a myriad of homeowner questions; how much should I spend?, what design should we do?,

should we remodel all 4 bathrooms? As the largest remodeler in North Atlanta, they’ve become the authority on homeowner guidance. We help homeowners understand that their homes are an investment, not an expense, and with the proper maintenance and periodic re-investment (remodeling), significant appreciation is virtually guaranteed. “It sold in 24 hours for over asking price”, this isn’t neighborhood folklore it happens every day to Remodeling Expo’s customers. As Remodeling Expo has come to dominate the remodeling market, they’ve also had the chance to record their fine work in a large library of before and after videos and photos for all to see at RemodelingExpo.com or call 404-9103969, 48 King Street Roswell GA 30075.

Beautifully livable interiors Creating an environment that infuses the wants, needs, vision and unique personality of my clients is how I approach each design. All of my designs are completely different from the other…because my clients are. A house is a homeowner’s sanctuary, their retreat and personal space in this big world we live in. I want my clients home not only to be beautiful but highly functional and to age gracefully….a place to create the best memories! My client-focused approach, personalized service and ability to weave modern elegance into traditional spaces allows for functional daily living for today’s busy families. Capturing the personality of the space and client then merging both makes each of Kat Nelson Design’s projects unique. Kat Nelson Designs has over 12 years of experience as a full service design firm based in Atlanta, Georgia our projects exist from West to East coast with many repeat clients. Here’s what some of her customers have said: “Kat has worked with me in two different homes, and I highly recommend her. She has a gift for creating liveable, cozy, and sophisticated spaces. She has helped to create homes that I am proud and happy to live in daily. I receive compliments frequently about my lighting and design features. Kat gets all the credit! Can’t wait to work on my next project with her.” “What an eye for color!! I met Kat for some ‘living room drapes’. It snowballed into my whole house. By our first meeting, she had learned my style then presented options that totally fit my vision for my house. She has a knack for mixing patterns, colors and textures that feels layered and collected rather than matchy or trendy. I would highly recommend Kat and her team!” “Katrina worked with us in decorating our newly built house as well as provided great tips in the final design. She was creative and extremely knowledgeable with bringing together our personal style, comfort, and a “wow” factor! We loved what she did and loved working with her personally!”

The Original Pancake House Alpharetta Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants. There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market. For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene. The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised. Just a few examples: We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice. We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all. Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on. We are very proud to be voted The Best of North Atlanta and we want to thank our loyal clientele who obviously appreciates our uncompromising commitment to serving the same menu year after year after year without changing a thing.

County judge recognized for saving toddler’s life FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Magistrate Court Judge Phill Bettis was recently recognized by the members of Cumming Chapter 1030 of the Vietnam Veterans of America for saving the life of a 2 year-old boy in July. Bettis, who has practiced law in the community since 1981, heard a call in mid-July about a missing toddler and sprang into action. Bettis knew of an unoccupied home with a backyard pool in the area where the child lived. Acting on a hunch, he went to the home, found the toddler floating in the pool and jumped in to save the child’s life. At its Sept. 4 meeting, the veterans’ organization presented Bettis with its first-ever “Distinguished Citizen Award.” In making the presentation, Chapter President Gary Goyette saluted Bettis for what he called his “quick, decisive and selfless deed.” In accepting the honor, Bettis said he grew up in the 1960s and 1970s and that he always had a great love and affection for the sacrifices of those who fought in the Vietnam War. He added that while he is grateful and humbled by the recognition, those who served in Vietnam and other wars are the true heroes.

From left, Gary Goyette presents Judge Phill Bettis with an award honoring his actions that saved a toddler earlier this year.

Board of Commissioners Suwanee campers present food honor Treaty of Paris Day donation to Meals by Grace FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga — During their meeting on Sept. 6, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Sept. 3 as Treaty of Paris Day in Forsyth County in honor of the 235th

anniversary of the treaty’s signing. The treaty, signed on Sept. 3, 1783, marked America’s independence following the American Revolutionary War.

SUWANEE, Ga. — On July 18, summer campers from Carrington Academy in Suwanee presented a donation of food to Meals by Grace, a food charity organization.

From June 25-July 13, campers held a food drive and lemonade stands to raise money to purchase additional food donations.
