Wanted man arrested after tag violation stop JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested three men Jan. 6 for identity theft, failure to appear and other crimes.

While traveling on McGinnis Ferry Road near Medlock Bridge, a police officer noticed a black Jeep Wrangler with a tag that expired in 1992. The registered owner’s license was suspended out of state May 9, 2018, according to police reports.

The car parked near Chipotle, and the officer confronted the driver, later identified as Tyrim Brown, 26, from Norcross, as he was walking to the restaurant. Brown confirmed he was the registered owner and he was placed under arrest. The officer placed Brown in the back of his patrol car and went to

Overly friendly patron removes woman’s watch JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman called police Dec. 31. to report an incident in which a man allegedly took a Rolex watch from her wrist.

The woman said she arrived at The Derby sports bar Dec. 29 around 9 p.m.

While sitting at the bar she was approached by two white men. Both men talked to her and one asked to use her phone.

While one man was using her phone, the other began flirting by rubbing her left arm, she said. When she arrived home around 12:30 a.m. she realized her Rolex watch, valued at $10,775, was missing.

She described the suspect as a white man with tattoos up and down his arms.

Dispute over SUV keys sparks altercation JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek Police responded to a Dec. 31 incident in which a woman allegedly grabbed another woman’s arm.

While inventorying the car, another officer found on the passenger side floorboard a Pennsylvania license with a picture of other passenger, David Fernandez, 29, Norcross. The officers reported they found several other fake IDs. Brown and Fernandez were charged with identity theft.

The woman who called police said she was at work at Longhorn Steakhouse on Medlock Bridge when she was confronted by her ex-boyfriend. She said they started arguing about the keys and whereabouts of a white Ford Explorer they shared.

While the woman was sitting in another vehicle, the man’s current girlfriend walked up and demanded the keys. The alleged victim said the girlfriend reached in the vehicle, grabbed her left hand and twisted her wrist. She said she intends to file a temporary protective order against the other woman.

Thief makes off with phone employee left unattended JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman reported Jan.1 that her phone, debit card and identification had been stolen while she was working at Five Below on Carriage Park Lane.

The woman said around 1 p.m. she was working on a display and went to help her manager. She left her iPhone 7 plus on the display and when she returned he phone was missing.

She was later notified by her bank, PNC, that her debit card was being used at the Ross located in the same business complex. The victim and her mother went to Ross and spoke with the employee who tended to the customer using her card.

The Ross employee said a black woman with two young children at-

tempted to purchase gift cards, but the card was denied.

The victim said her phone was in a yellow Minions case that contained her debit card, Indiana driver’s license and college ID.

Police called to investigate fraudulent credit purchases JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police are looking into an alleged credit card fraud in which someone attempted to make $4,000 worth of purchases.

A man met with police Dec. 31 and said he received a notice from Wells Fargo Bank of possible fraudulent activity Dec. 28. Two purchases were made that day, one for $30 at Clippers in Lithia Springs and one for $20 at the QT in Lithonia.

Two other purchases were declined $3,132 at Lee Jewelers and $1,620 at Leo Jewelers, both on Glenwood Road in Decatur.

Planning Commission rejects proposed Shakerag subdivision

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Days after its petition to build a 280-unit subdivision in Shakerag was denied by Johns Creek planners, the developer has asked to withdraw the request.

The Johns Creek Planning Commission voted unanimously Jan. 8 to deny a petition from Ashton Woods Home to build the subdivision, consisting of 143 single-family homes and 137 attached units on 20 acres.

On Jan. 10, Ashton Woods Homes sent a letter to the city’s Department of Community Development essentially withdrawing their application. Under the city’s ordinance, because zoning public hearings must be advertised in advance,

once a case has gone to the Planning Commission, it must go before the City Council.

“It is clear at this point that the current application is not acceptable to the community and that there is no possibility of a modification to the application which would be acceptable to the community, owner and applicant,” the letter stated.

The proposal, RZ-18-002, called for an overall density of 1.36 units per acre.

The site plan went through several iterations since it was originally submitted in spring 2018.

The city staff recommended denial of the project because of the projected traffic impact and a lack of similarity to surrounding neighborhoods. Three residents spoke in opposition to the develop-

ment, with a few dozen in attendance to hear the case.

In other matters before the Planning Commission, the board approved a proposal to develop a RaceTrac convenience store and a request to allow a fencing academy in an existing office space.

The RaceTrac, to be built on Medlock Bridge Road, was approved with conditions developed by city staff that bind the developers to the plans presented in the rezoning process.

Marybeth Cooper, vice president of the Johns Creek Community Association, which opposed previous efforts to build a RaceTrac, spoke in support of the new development and praised the RaceTrac team’s cooperation this time around.

“They’re reaching out, they’re getting with us before they put plans in, making sure no one is going to jump up and down,” Cooper said. “As you can see, there’s no one opposing in the room that I know of. This is the right place, the right time, and the right plan.”

Commissioners also approved the fencing academy in Technology Park with the conditions that the building be limited to office space or dance, music and similar schools.

Two cases that would have gone before the Planning Commission in January were withdrawn by the applicant before the meeting: a proposal to build a 12-home subdivision on State Bridge Road near Jones Bridge, and a proposal for a 37-home subdivision with townhomes on Medlock Bridge Road.

Johns Creek seeks input on the Bell and Boles corridor

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Plans for the Bell Road and Boles Road corridor are starting to take shape, with construction of a new roundabout possibly beginning by the end of the year.

Bell and Boles roads form a T, connecting the northeast corner of Johns Creek with three of the city’s major thoroughfares, Medlock Bridge, Abbots Bridge and McGinnis Ferry.

The corridor includes Shakerag Park, Shakerag Elementary, River Trail Middle School and 20 neighborhoods. The area is expected to grow over the next few years with the development of new subdivisions and creation of Cauley Creek Park.

With that in mind, operational and safety improvements to the corridor were among the top priority projects listed as part of the 2016 transportation sales tax referendum, or TSPLOST. The projects were initially estimated to cost $7 million.

The proposed corridor improvements have been broken down into five projects: the intersection of Bell Road and McGinnis Ferry, the intersection of Bell Road and Medlock Bridge, a roundabout at Rogers Circle, a roundabout at the entrance to Cauley Creek Park and replacing the bridge over Cauley Creek Tributary.

In addition, the Public Works department plans to extend the sidewalk trails from the Rogers Circle intersection to the existing sidewalk by Shakerag Elementary and to the entrance of the new park.

More than a dozen residents attended a public input meeting Jan. 9 to hear details about the plans.

Citizens had questions about the size and number of roundabouts planned for the corridor and the placement of sidewalks, but generally seemed favorable to the proposals.

Improvements to the McGinnis Ferry intersection and construction of a Rogers Circle roundabout are the closest to construction, with right-of-way acquisition planned for this year and construction possibly beginning by the end of 2019.

At the meeting, Deputy Public Works Director Chris Haggard explained that the department plans to use Rogers Circle as a detour while the bridge is replaced.

As a result, fixing the intersection at Rogers Circle must come first.

Currently, there are limited sightlines and safety concerns for southbound drivers turning from Rogers Circle to Bell Road. A roundabout will slow down cars and make turning safer, Haggard explained.

Once the Rogers Circle roundabout is on its way, the city will focus on creating a roundabout at Cauley Creek Park and the entrance to the Homestead subdivision. Both roundabouts will be about the size of the existing circle at Bell and Boles.

“We want to have the road in good shape so when the park is open, it’s open,” Haggard said. “We don’t want to open the new park and then immediately go in and mess up the entrance.”

Fulton County continues discussion on 2019 budget

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Disagreement over how much money commissioners should spend on travel dominated budget discussions at a Jan. 9 meeting of the Fulton County Commission.

Commissioner Bob Ellis asked to have his travel budget, which was recently raised to $50,000, cut by $45,000.

Commissioner Marvin Arrington opposed Ellis’s motion, saying that all commissioner’s travel budgets should be the same.

The dispute led to discussion over whether commissioners could reduce or redistribute the funds that go to their office.

The commission voted Dec. 19 to up individual travel budgets from 12,000 to $50,000 annually. That resolution stated that the travel budget could be used for staff training and that money could be transferred to other operating accounts in the commissioner’s office.

Ellis and Commissioner Liz Hausmann voted against the change.

“If I know I’m not going to spend it, I’d like to set it at a lower level. That’s all,” Ellis said at the Jan. 9 meeting.

County Attorney Patrise M. PerkinsHooker said it would require a vote of the board to remove the money from El-

lis’s budget or redistribute it to another area of the budget outside of his office.

Alternatively, any amount in the travel budget that the commissioners do not spend would be returned to the general fund at the end of the year.

In other business Jan. 9, commissioners decided to add an item to its legislative priorities in 2019, with sights set once again on tax relief for homeowners.

Commissioner Emma Darnell proposed a measure that would protect lower and moderate income neighborhoods from tax increases when large “mini-mansions” are built next door.

Darnell’s proposal received support from several speakers during public comment and from the board. There was some debate over the exact language of the proposal, however, with some commissioners noting that home appraisal problems do not just affect low-income neighborhoods.

“What is being described as happening here in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods is actually happening in every neighborhood at every income level,” Commissioner Lee Morris said.

The Fulton County Commission will consider adopting the 2019 budget at its next meeting Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. at 141 Pryor St. in Atlanta. The proposed budget can be viewed at fultoncountyga. gov/fcfd-budget-information.

Johns Creek Fire Chief retires JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek Fire Chief Jeff Hogan recently announced he will be stepping down from his position and accepting an appointment to become the State Fire Marshal in February.

Chief Hogan began his fire department career more than 35 years ago when he joined the Fulton County Fire Department.

After a career in which he held various operations, investigative, and supervisory roles, Hogan left Fulton County and joined the newly formed Johns Creek Fire Department in 2008.

After only a few years in Johns Creek he rose to become the city’s fire chief in February 2011.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The Northeast Spruill Oaks Library celebrates its 20th anniversary this month.

The branch has served the area that is now southern Johns Creek since January 1999. In those two decades, the library has added new classes, amped up its summer reading program and expanded its online materials. One of its biggest changes came in February 2008, when a teen center was created.

The library stocked 90,000 books when it first opened, but the inventory now stands at about 65,000, according to Karen Swenson, an adult services librarian who has worked at the Spruill Oaks Library for 11 years.

“We’ve done some weeding, recycling and giving to other book groups [like the Friends of the Northeast Spruill Oaks Library] to sell the books that we’re not circulating,” Swenson said.

The library sits on property once owned by Stephen Spruill. The location of his home site is marked by four gray pillars in front of the building.

The 25,000-square-foot, glass and steel building was designed by architect George Hornbein. Swenson said the building, along with the people who work there, make her job special.

“It’s a modern building, so we have a lot of open windows where we can see out over the wooded area,” she said.

“We have a natural habitat, a certified natural habitat that’s maintained by our Friends, and you’re able to walk over

there and see the children walk over there with their parents.”

At the front entrance there is a glass etching of a poem entitled “Looking forward, looking back,’ created by Deanna Sirlin and Philip Auslander. The themes of change and history are also reflected in colored panels hanging inside that depict scenes from old North Fulton.

“That’s the theme for the 20th anniversary, ‘looking forward, looking back,’” Swenson said. “Because even though some things are gone in the Johns Creek area or with the library, we still can look forward to all the things to come.”

About 70 people were on hand at a ceremony Jan. 13 marking the 20th anniversary. Attendees included former staff, members of the library board and founding members of the Friends of the Northeast Spruill Oaks Library.

The Johns Creek High School Orchestra, under the direction of Young K. Kim, performed at the celebration.

Kim directed the Centennial High School Band at the opening of the library 20 years ago.

Swenson especially wanted to thank volunteers and the Friends of the Northeast Spruill Oaks Library for all they had done to support the branch. The organization has given more than $400,000 in donations and countless hours of volunteer labor, she said.

“To see the community be so involved has just been heartwarming for us,” she said. “We’re responsive to the needs of the community and we appreciate their patronage. They’ve helped to make us who we are today.”

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Five of the Alpharetta area’s state legislators provided city leaders with a glimpse of what they expect to be hot-button issues when the 2019 General Assembly convenes this week.

Appearing at the opening of the Jan. 7 City Council meeting, State House Speaker Pro Tem Jan Jones (R-Milton) said she expects one of the most controversial items coming before the Legislature this year will be in the area of hospital expansion. In particular, she said, lawmakers will review the process by which certificates of need are issued to hospitals to locate or expand services to certain areas of the state.

The certificate of need process has become a major issue for rural communities where the number of hospital facilities have been shrinking. At the same time, many urban-based hospital systems have fought liberalizing the process to guard against a glut.

State Rep. Chuck Martin (R-Alpharetta) said he expects school safety will doubtless draw a lot of the attention.

“I don’t know a single legislator, regardless of party, regardless of tenure at the Legislature, that is not going to walk in that building on the 14th at 10 o’clock and be focused on anything more than school safety and how we can keep our kids safe,” Martin said.

Also within the education spectrum, Martin said he will pursue efforts to fix the funding mechanism for the Teacher Retirement System to ensure educators receive the full benefits promised to them. Right now, he said, the system is seriously underfunded, and the state is obliged to honor its commitments to current and retired teachers. At the same time, he said, a healthy pension system will assure new teachers of a stable retirement.

“It will not be easy to do,” Martin said. “It will involve conversations with our educators and with our employees, and it will cost money.”

State Rep. Mary Robichaux (DRoswell) said that as a newly elected member of the House, she plans to listen and learn. She said she has a long background in healthcare management, including serving as a quality and efficiency expert with the American Heart Association for more than 10 years.

Robichaux said she does plan to keep one ear on the constituents in Roswell and Alpharetta to ensure their concerns are being addressed by lawmakers.

State Sen. Brandon Beach (R-Alpharetta) said he remains focused on the expansion of broadband as a means of fostering Georgia’s powerful economy.

“I look at broadband and 21st century technology just like a road or bridge,” he said. “We have to have it now. Everybody in the state needs it, and we need to make sure we’ve got the right fiber in the ground here in Alpharetta, the right small cells, the right technology so we can be on the cutting edge for the 21st century jobs in technology.”

As chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, Beach said he wants to focus on improving operations for the Port of Savannah. Right now, he said, 17 percent of the freight coming out of the port is on rail. The rest leaves on trucks.

He said he wants to work on a system that increases the portion of distribution to 35 percent rail.

Such a measure, Beach said, will help relieve some of the 18-wheeler traffic that chokes Metro Atlanta freeways.

Beach said he also plans to appeal to Congress that a share of the federal gasoline tax remain in the state in which it was collected.

“Right now, every time you put a gallon of gas in the car, you send 18.4 cents to Washington,” he said. “When we get that money back, there could be as many as 22 different hoops you have to jump through to spend that money when it’s a federal dollar.”

Beach said he’s proposing Georgia keep 10 cents of the tax and use it as state money to be used without federal regulatory strings.

Avid runner cleans up during daily excursions

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Local running enthusiast Laura Stalemark has turned her morning jogs into a crusade against littering, and she wants to encourage others to help.

“I’ve been running consecutively for 619 days,” Stalemark said. “It started as a weight-loss journey, but I started really enjoying the loop that I go on. It’s all sidewalks around Johns Creek and Alpharetta, but I realized that there was a lot of litter and trash.”

Stalemark always tried to pick up litter when she could, but in the last few months she has made a conscious effort to pick up as much trash as she can.

Once a week when she takes a walk, she brings bags with her to clean up whatever she finds.

“I thought since I enjoyed the sidewalk so much it would be nice of me to give back by cleaning up,” she said.

Typically, she fills three grocery bags, or about the equivalent of one regular trash bag, on a 4-mile route that includes Kimball Bridge, Jones Bridge, Buice Road and Old Milton Parkway.

“These are suburban areas,” she said. “These aren’t some country road that no one ever picks things up on.”

Stalemark said she typically finds bottles, cans and waste from fast food.

She was surprised at how frequently she finds alcohol bottles.

“I felt like this isn’t a good thing for our community if someone comes from out of town and the first thing they see is all these mini-alcohol bottles,” she said.

Sometimes she finds lost items, like wallets and keys, and so far she has been able to return them to their owners. A few times, she’s found cash. There are oddities she’s come across, like a drone, which she was able to return to its owners, and a bag of cocaine, which

she turned over to the police.

“I’ve saved a couple turtles,” Stalemark said. “I get to see deer. You get to see nature and you get to see things you haven’t seen before. It’s really nice to get out and get to enjoy the area.”

Stalemark said she appreciates the work the city has put into beautifying neighborhoods but knows they can’t do it alone.

“We have to participate in not littering and picking a few things up as we see them, as long as they’re not dangerous things,” she said. “I feel like if we’re going to enjoy the area, you can help take care of it as well. It takes a village.”

Stalemark shares photos of the things she finds on her Instagram, roadrunadventures, where she also encourages people to stop littering and to help clean up. She said some of her friends, some from across the country, have been encouraged to follow suit.

“I would just really like to see people littering less and taking better care of their community,” she said.

Local artist displays work at hospital

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Local artist Ruth Jones is debuting her first solo show at Emory Johns Creek hospital from Jan. 12 to April 19.

“It’s very exciting,” Jones said. “I’m turning 65 in a few weeks. It feels like I should have done this before … I am really humbled and really thankful for this opportunity.”

The exhibit features acrylic on canvas paintings of landscapes and flowers in an impressionist style. The show is titled “Reflections.”

“When I paint, I just try to reflect God’s glory,” Jones said. “I just am so inspired every day. My husband laughs at me. Almost every single morning I’m like ‘turn the kitchen lights off; you have to look at this sunrises.’”

Most of the art was painted from photographs: some of the beach, some from when Jones lived in New Mexico.

Many of the paintings depict sunrises or sunsets.

“I paint just about every single day,” Jones said. “When I wake up in the morning I think about what I’m going to paint that day.”

The paintings in the show were made over more than five years. Jones said she can easily tell which ones are newer because her style has become more impressionistic and “looser.”

“The color palates have stayed almost identical,” Jones said. “I use a lot of blue — I do a lot of skies — and it’s a lot of earth tones. It’s browns, golds and oranges.”

Jones graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in painting and drawing. She has been a member of the Johns Creek Arts Guild for several years. The Arts Guild supports the Johns Creek Arts Center and other visual arts projects around town, such as the shows at the hospital.

“The Arts Center is such a wonderful piece that I feel is oft overlooked because people don’t realize how important art is,” Jones said. “The guild exists to help put the word out in the community about the Arts Center.”

There was an opening reception Jan. 12 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. hosted by the Art Guild. See the show downstairs at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, 6325 Hospital Parkway. All artwork will be available for purchase during the show.

Developer unveils latest plans for upgrade to old Sears site

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Few projects have garnered as much buzz in Alpharetta lately as the proposed plans to redevelop the abandoned Sears property in North Point Mall.

Last fall, the mall owner, General Growth Properties, submitted plans to the city to convert the 14-acre property into a mixed-use development. The plans, which include converting the parking lot, call for 328 multifamily units with restaurant space and green space.

On Jan. 9, city officials and developers met with residents at the Community Zoning Information Meeting at City Hall to answer questions and present updates on several projects.

So far, the public response to the Sears site development has been favorable, said Community Development Director Kathi Cook.

“I’ve received mostly positive comments,” Cook said. “We’ve had some people we heard that are concerned about the density that goes with residential. We also have some that are very excited to see something happen to a failing retail center, Sears.”

As part of a Livable Centers Initiative last year, the city surveyed the public about what they wanted to see happen at North Point. The response, Cook said, was to add more green space, add mixeduses, add park space, take out some of the parking and make more connections.

The plans under consideration now try to incorporate these requests, she said.

One of the updates is to upgrade the sidewalks and infrastructure with more pedestrian-friendly connections.

“A lot of them said that they go to the [Big Creek] Greenway anyway when they’re on their lunch hour. So, to have better access to that was very exciting.”

This project will be a part of the Alpha Loop, a growing network of multiuse trails that will connect City Center and Avalon with the city’s existing parks.

“The goal is to get the Alpha Loop to join Encore Parkway, cross the street, go down Encore, and then join the greenway,” Cook said. “It will all be tied together.”

There hasn’t been a project of this size in Alpharetta before, Cook said.

will go through the Planning Commission next on Feb. 7 and, if it moves forward, it will go before the City Council on Feb. 25.

Staff is currently in the midst of writing up their recommendations, Cook said.

The Jan. 9 meeting also provided updates on other city projects, including renovations to Bailey-Johnson School, which would add a food hall and culinary school, and a 159-home development, dubbed the Ecco Park, proposed by The Providence Group on North Point Drive.

Community Zoning Information meetings are held every month at City Hall so project applicants can talk to residents about their plans before they go before the City Council.

The best time to have a birthday When is the best time to have a birthday? I’m fairly certain the answer is not in January. At least, not for me.

But alas, the fates have cursed me by placing the anniversary of my birth in this winter month.

I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. It’s always nice to celebrate surviving for another journey Carson Cook around the sun, regardless of Reporter carson@appenmediagroup.com which way Earth’s axis is tilting when you reach that milestone.

But there’s just not much fun to be had in January, at least relative to other months.

One of my sisters was born in early May — she could have pool party birthdays — my other sister was born in late October, so naturally her celebrations had a Halloween theme.

As a movie buff, it would be easy to plan a cinema outing to celebrate my birth, but January is notorious for being one of the worst months for movie releases.

May kicks off the summer blockbuster season, and October is prime time for horror flicks. You can expect family friendly fare at Thanksgiving, Oscar bait in December and romantic comedies around Valentine’s Day. But my birthday falls in a dead zone between the cinematic seasons.

Even if one manages to plan something great, there’s a chance your plans will be canceled because of snow. Well, maybe not here, where yesterday I

spent an hour outside without a jacket, let alone a winter coat, and felt great.

But I grew up in the thin belt of the nation where snow happens just often enough for it to be a problem, but not enough for there to be the infrastructure in place to handle it.

In my hometown, everyone hates driving in the snow, either because of the snow or because of the people who don’t know how to drive in the snow.

Thus, canceling plans in late January due to weather was a real possibility growing up.

Then, one has to consider the proximity to Christmas. This might not apply to everyone, depending on their religion, heritage and family traditions, but for me, Christmas and my birthday were the only giftreceiving holidays.

My dad’s birthday is exactly six months after Christmas. He really gets to space out his gift receiving, but mine has to happen back-to-back.

Those who have birthdays in December have it even worse. Their special days are often overshadowed

by Christmas, and I extend my most sincere sympathy to them.

As a get older, I suppose planning a fun birthday party matters less. In a few decades, I may be hoping people ignore my birthday altogether.

For now, I’ll keep fantasizing about the good times I’d drag my friends into if I were born in April or August.

I do share the same birthday as Oprah Winfrey, so I guess it’s not a total bust.

Nice to meet you, here’s all my germs I don’t say “bless you” when someone sneezes. I refuse to utter the phrase for many reasons, chief of which is the fact that I don’t believe sneezing leaves someone susceptible to demonic possession, having their soul stolen or that it wards off the Black Plague.

Secondly, I believe that it is very strange to acknowledge a natural JOE PARKER function of the body. Saying “bless Reporter you” after someone sneezes and joe@appenmediagroup.com singing “Hello, Dolly” after someone breaks wind is the same in my eyes.

While saying “bless you” following a sneeze is not a practice to which I adhere, it does not bother me.

However, I take issue with another customary act — shaking hands.

So we’re meeting for the first time? Let me awkwardly place my hand into yours to signify that yes, we now have in fact met. And nothing says “Nice to meet you” like two unknown people spreading all their germs to each other.

And why, when someone accomplishes something, is it seen as perfectly normal to thrust out your hand and expect the other person to do the same? “Congratulations on the birth of your child! To signify well wishes, feel how sweaty my palm is!”

Alpharetta’s new Economic Development director grabs reins Thomas sets goal to strengthen ties with local business

A decade later, Thomas finds himself studying conditions at the opposite end of the spectrum, this time at the local level.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It’s a little like grabbing the reins of a charging horse, taking over as Alpharetta’s director of Economic Development.

From Avalon to the new City Center, few cities in Metro Atlanta have seen the explosion of economic growth that has taken place over the past five years.

“We’re growing so much so fast,” said Matthew Thomas, who was appointed Alpharetta Director of Economic Development last June. “Right now, we’re faced with a matter of how we want to engage with business. It’s a good problem to have, as important as going out and getting new business.”

Thomas, 29, came to Alpharetta after five years as head of economic development for the City of Canton. Prior to that, the Dalton native served internships with the Metro Atlanta Chamber and the Chattanooga Chamber, both exposing him to the ins and outs of economic development.

He graduated with a degree in economics from the University of West Georgia during a time when the nation was entrenched in its worst recession in generations. It provided him a tangible perspective on how economies work.

“We were literally studying the depth of how things like supply and demand work in consumer economics, how Federal Reserve interest rates impact how banks and private and public institutions are intertwined,” he said. “We were

That’s a lot of new business and new development, and Thomas said it’s his job to connect with these people.

“So much of the development here is new,” he said. “In a lot of communities you have development that’s been there for 40-60 years. A lot of the bricks here in Alpharetta, they go back 20-30 years maybe. A lot of our office parks are fairly new.”

A major part of his role, as he sees it, is to open channels with these investors and find out how the city can help them remain strong and grow.

To that end, Thomas said he has reached out to all the various business organizations in the area — the Alpharetta Business Association, the Alpharetta Chamber, the Greater North Fulton Chamber.

“We’re going to operate better when we know business better,” he said. “[We want to] create an environment that sustains vitality and expansion of their business. The fruit of that is expansion, more jobs and a more favorable place for new businesses.”

One concern raised with the recent boom has been the erosion of Alpharetta’s small-town image, an image many residents want to preserve.

Alpharetta Economic Development Director Matthew Thomas says it’s his job to keep the city connected to new businesses and investors to guide future growth.

The 29-year-old came to Alpharetta in June after five years with the City of Canton.

“You’ve got to pay homage to where you came from,” Thomas said. “I think a lot of that is captured in corridors like Downtown Alpharetta that does have a pretty dense mix of the older and historic structures. I think we’ve done well so far to preserve those structures.”

At the same time, Thomas said the city is capable of creating its own history witnessed by its foresight in attracting the technology sector.

“You’ve got 600-plus technology com-

panies,” he said. “Those are innovators.

Those are thinkers. They make their living by being on the cutting edge, and it’s that same mentality for a lot of people who call Alpharetta home or who have invested here.”

Rates’ last hurrah below 5 percent The tumbling stock market has brought with it one last hurrah to capture low mortgage interest rates.

Since hitting an all time low of around 3.34 percent in late 2012, the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage according to MortgageNewsDaily had steadily fought to get back above 5 percent. It finally did early last November.

Then suddenly, investors got nervous about the thought of an impending recession, and about trade deals with China, and the stock markets freaked.

Most ended the year lower than where they started.

Mortgage interest rates are loosely pegged to the 10-Year Treasury Yield.

That yield, and mortgage interest rates, go up when investors are buying stocks instead of Treasury bonds. And they go down when the opposite is true. As the stock market sank, investors ran to the

Before the drop, homebuyers and homeowners were having a hard time getting used to the idea of a 5 percent-rate. For roughly the last six years, they had been used to rates under, or near, 4 percent. Many of my younger clients didn’t believe me when I first told them. They thought I was nuts.

My older clients were different. The 5 percent-rate still paled in comparison to the above 10 percent rates they had to deal with throughout most of the 1980s. Freddie Mac’s average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage peaked in October 1981 at a whopping 18.45 percent!

We have certainly enjoyed historically low rates lately. When rates dropped below 5 percent in January of 2009, it was the first time in recorded history they had ever done that (aside from a very brief time during WWII when no one was buying homes).

Because of that, it is easy to think that the 4.6 percent average rate that we are enjoying right now, isn’t here to stay very long. It dropped quickly since last November, and it could very easily

When he is not working on economic development for the city, Thomas is settling in to home life with his wife, Keona, whom he married in September. He also likes to spend time with his other passion, playing jazz piano.

If the survey has a lot of questions and it takes more than 5 minutes to complete, you probably won’t get a lot of feedback.

The most important part of surveying your customers is doing something with the data you collect. If the survey identifies that you are not meeting their expectations, it’s a great opportunity to improve in areas that are identified.

Customer surveys are very commonplace with large corporations, but many small business owners don’t take advantage of this. Surveying your customers, and improving your small business from what you learn, is a great way to continue to grow your small business!

Small businesses need to invest in these four technologies (NAPS) — Because they operate on razor-thin margins, small-business owners and managers may be tempted to put technology expenses near the bottom of any priority list. After all, small businesses have many fires to put out—and investing in a new technology tool can seem like a problem that can wait.

But technology is a double-edged sword: Used correctly, it increases productivity, brings savings and gives you a competitive advantage. Ignored, it lets your competitors use it against you. And it’s worth remembering that business software is the driver of technology value; without it, your hardware is useless.

Software can be a thicket of specialty areas and product names: Which tool should be purchased now and which can be put off? Capterra recently surveyed small and midsize businesses (SMBs) and asked them about their 2019 and 2020 purchasing intentions and budgets for business software.

The 2019 Capterra SMB Spending Survey illustrates four clear software categories that small-business leaders are prioritizing and can help other companies understand the competitive landscape and prioritize technology investments.

1. Finance and Accounting: This is the standout tech category, with 53.6 percent of respondents budgeting for it. If you don’t correctly handle your accounts receivable, accounts payable, sales taxes, income taxes, reporting and audits, you’ll derail your business—it’s that simple.

Among businesses investing in this technology, banking and construction lead the way, with over 60 percent of respondents budgeting for finance and accounting software. Transportation and wholesale industries have the highest average spend at $56,330 and $53,850.

More findings include: • Transportation and wholesale businesses should expect to budget between $50,000 and $55,000 for finance and accounting software in the next 12 to 24 months.

• Media, government, manufacturing, banking and retail should consider budgeting between $30,000 and $40,000 for finance and accounting tools.

• Other businesses should consider budgeting between $10,000 and $30,000 for finance and accounting software.

2. Cloud Computing: This year,

cloud software is the second most prevalent technology, with 47.8 percent of businesses surveyed budgeting for it. It delivers all the power of FAMGA (Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon).

Cloud-enabled Software as a Service (SaaS) gives small businesses subscription-based access to robust business software and data storage technology.

Industry experts suggest: • Insurance and transportation businesses should expect to budget between $40,000 and $50,000 in the next 12 to 24 months for cloud computing technology.

• Businesses in the services, communications, manufacturing, health care, banking and education sectors should consider budgeting between $30,000 and $40,000 for cloud business software.

3. Data and Information Security: Over 40 percent of all industries budget for data security. Research shows cyberattacks can cost small businesses $84,000 to $148,000 per incident and that 60 percent of SMBs that are hacked go out of business within six months.

The average budget spend on data security takes a tiered shape for business size. Larger businesses with more data, more customers and more employees will need more software licenses and greater functionality. Expert findings include: • Government agencies (and those that work closely with them) should plan on budgeting between $40,000 and $50,000 for data security in the next 12 to 24 months.

• Those in the education industry should anticipate a $40,000 spend.

• Retail, construction, health care and wholesale should expect to budget close to $20,000.

• Other sectors may gain competitive advantage with a data security budget between $30,000 and $40,000.

4. Digital Marketing: This year, 45.1 percent of SMB respondents plan to budget for digital marketing campaigns and tools. This is natural, given that ROBO (research online, buy off­line) buying behavior is now the norm. Up to 88 percent of buyers do online research before purchasing in a store.

The survey uncovered that digital marketing spend tracks with business size. At 60 percent and 50 percent, media companies and retail businesses

have the highest percentage of smaller firms investing in digital marketing.

Most industries are between 40 percent and 50 percent. More findings include: • If you’re a smaller business in the media or retail sector, plan to spend $10,000 to $25,000 on digital marketing over the next 12 to 24 months.

• If you’re a midsize business in the media or retail industry, plan to spend $35,000 to $45,000 on digital marketing over the next 12 to 24 months.

• If you’re in another industry (especially insurance), you may gain a competitive advantage with a digital marketing budget between $20,000 and $40,000.

Local rescue saves hundreds of cat, kitten lives

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — For All About Cats Rescue & Adoption Founder Kristy Grieco, it all began with Coco.

Coco was a stray neighborhood cat abandoned after his owners divorced and left. He began showing up at Greico’s house for food and warmth and, before she or her husband knew it, they decided to adopt Coco.

“Neither one of us had ever had a cat before Coco,” Greico said. “Both of us realized how affectionate he was and that cats provide great companionship.

You could say he opened our eyes to the world of cats.”

Greico’s organization was born soon after in 2013 once she realized the lack of cat rescues in the area.

“I knew how dogs were always being rescued and that people were always opening their homes to take them in, but it’s not the same for cats,” Greico said.

“People often think that cats can fend for themselves. So, if someone sees a dog on the street, they are far more likely to stop and help it than to help a cat.”

All About Cats Rescue & Adoption consists of 30 volunteers with eight foster homes and is located at the Roswell

PetSmart store at 625 Crossville Road.

Before starting the nonprofit, Greico had almost a decade of experience working with other shelters and rescue organizations.

“Our mission is to save the lives of abandoned, homeless cats and kittens in need,” Greico said. “They will be provided proper care with food, shelter, medical treatment and the attention they deserve. We will seek out the best possible forever homes for these cats and kittens through a network of opportunities and leads.”

Adoptions are held during the week by appointment and on weekends between 1-6 p.m. Greico said the rescue is always looking for more volunteers or fosters to help with cleaning, fundraising events, website maintenance, taking pictures and transportation.

In 2018 alone, All About Cats Rescue & Adoption rescued 202 cats and adopted out 168.

Volunteer Pam Bell said it was Greico’s tireless enthusiasm and commitment to rescuing cats that convinced her to join.

“Kristy has so much passion for the cats and doing the right thing to make sure they are cared for,” Bell said.

“That’s why we volunteer with her.”

All About Cats Rescue & Adoption members and volunteers raised $6,000 last October at the Whiskers & Wine Fundraiser, their most successful yet. organization. Her most recent foster, a 10-year-old cat who was an owner surrender, has now been adopted by Bell.

Greico said there are several benefits to adopting a cat of any age, including that they are quiet, relatively easy to take care of, offer great companionship, are great pets for small places, can ease stress and lower blood pressure, and can help their owners live longer.

The largest expense the rescue deals with is the vet bills. Many of the cats they see come from shelters or from the streets and require additional medical attention along with routine spaying/

neutering, shots and testing. These medical issues can range from upper respiratory infections to dental cleanings, which can cost anywhere from $20-$800, Greico said.

The rescue’s next fundraiser will be held all day Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Alessio’s Restaurant & Pizzeria on 640 West Crossville Road. A portion of all food sales, when attendees tell servers why they’re there, will go to All About Cats Rescue & Adoption.

Chattahoochee High stages ‘Mamma Mia!’

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Audiences can dance, jive and have the time of their lives at Chattahoochee High School’s production of “Mamma Mia!” The show runs Jan. 17 to 19 at 7 p.m., with a matinee Jan. 20 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $15 and available at chattahoocheemusicaltheatre.com.

Chattahoochee is one of the first schools in the state to put on the musical, which features 22 ABBA songs. The romantic comedy follows a young woman trying to determine which of three men is her father before her upcoming wedding.

“The best word to describe it is sing-

able — not that it’s easy to sing,” said Cameron Kreitner, one of the play’s leads. “It’s accessible. There’s something for everyone: a love story, drama, even a little mystery.”

The show is helmed by Jennie Fabianski and Jan Jensen, with Lori Bu Lori Buonamici conducting, Mitch Haber leading set design and choreography by Allison Polaski. Students played a large role in putting the play together, with 65 teens acting, working crew or performing in the orchestra.

Chattahoochee is one of few schools in the area that has a full orchestra pit as part of its stage, and the live music will make the difference in the performance, Jensen said.

“We want them to dance with us,” she said. “You can dance much more in the aisle of a live theatre than a movie theatre.”

Fans of the 2008 movie, or the 2018 sequel, are sure to enjoy the live show,

though they should expect some changes from the adaptation.

“There’s no Pierce Brosnan,” joked Kreitner, who shares Brosnan’s role of Sam Carmichael.

“Just fall in love with it all over again,” said Devi Peot, the show’s other star.

Peot said she enjoyed putting her own spin on the character of Donna Sheridan.

“She’s just an everyday person who’s going through a lot of things,” she said.

“You can relate to her.”

Whether fans of the movie or newcomers, the cast and direction team assured everyone leaving the theatre will have a good time singing and dancing along to the iconic music.

“It just so much fun, and everybody needs a little more fun right now,” Jensen said.

“Don’t miss your chance to see it,” Kreitner said. “I believe theatre is one of the best ways to escape the real world, and this show is going to give you an opportunity to put away everything that is troubling you in life and have some fun.”

County calls for water, soil testing at Lanier Golf Club

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County is pursuing soil and water tests at the former Lanier Golf Course which is the site of a residential development.

At a Jan. 8 work session, Assistant County Manager Garrin Coleman said based on recent discussions with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, it is recommended the county moves forward with an initial one-time test of surface water for arsenic and pesticides.

The decision stems from action in November when county commissioners voted to request the state Environmental Protection Division’s Watershed Protection branch to perform water quality and soil testing on both the North Cove development phases at the former Lanier Golf Club.

directly into Lake Lanier and Haw Creek, a tributary of the Chattahoochee River.

“When it rains, storm water collects pollutants from the land as it runs off toward a nearby waterway,” Coleman said. “This pollution that results from our everyday lives and land uses is called non-point source pollution. It includes litter, lawn chemicals, auto fluids, erosion, pet waste and any number of other substances.”

As per federal regulations, Forsyth County is required to maintain a permit for municipal separate storm sewer system discharges, Coleman said.

“Forsyth County’s storm water management plan is designed to prevent harmful pollutants from being washed or illegally dumped into storm drains and discharged into a local waterway,” he said. “The requirements are regulated through the Georgia Department

of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division.”

The county has set requirements based on its storm sewer permit, including overseeing post-construction storm water, and protection of stream channels and overbank flooding.

Coleman said the county routinely samples storm water when illicit discharges occur for things like fluoride, bacteria and temperature. The county also conducts long-term monitoring at 14 locations along impaired streams throughout the county.

Now, Coleman said county staff recommends a test of surface water for arsenic and pesticides.

The sample would be collected by Jacobs Engineering staff and billed under the Department of Engineering’s Watershed Services contract.

The results would be compared to the Georgia Water Quality standards. Based

on the findings, additional sampling could be required.

Last year, the Georgia Mountain Regional Commission performed a Development of Regional Impact Summary that said the project site has been used as a golf course and therefore potentially hosts various chemicals and toxins within the soils.

“It has also been suggested portions of the site have been used for illegal dumping,” the summary said. “As such, land disturbance on the site will require strict adherence to erosion and sedimentation controls and should be coupled with soil testing to determine the extent and potency of any potential contaminants.”

Further, the Regional Commission said storm water management will be critical for the project site given the projected volume of impervious surface and the lay of the land.

Roswell exhibit highlights local black history Roswell Research Library and Archives open to public The Roswell Historical Society/City of Roswell Research Library and Archives, which was established in 1994, is open year round to the public and is located on the second floor of the Roswell Cultural Arts Center at 950 Forrest St. People can drop by at any time Mondays and Thursdays, 1-4 p.m., as well as Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-noon.

The archives contain a plethora of historical information and items specific to Roswell. It contains over 5,000 photographs, 2,000 volumes of historical texts, jewelry, textiles, and audio/video interviews with residents. One of the oldest items in the collection is an 1818 journal by Barrington King detailing a trip to Savannah.

The collection is so robust that the facility is running out of space to house it all, said archivist Elaine DeNiro.

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — The City of Roswell is often prized for its history and dedication to preserving that history, and residents now have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of its depths.

Through January and February, the Roswell Cultural Arts Center at 950 Forrest St. is hosting an exhibit on “Black Heritage: The Unsung Heroes of Roswell.”

The exhibit covers a rich side of history that isn’t as well known or often explored in Roswell, said Elaine DeNiro, archivist for the Roswell Historical Society/City of Roswell research library and archives.

“We really want to get the message out that Roswell’s black history dates back to when Roswell King came,” DeNiro said. “It’s as important as the history of the homes and the history of the mill. And, with recent development, the traditionally black neighborhoods in Roswell are disappearing. We want to draw attention to that.”

The exhibit focuses specifically on the everyday stories from heroes in Roswell’s black community, stretching from Antebellum days to the Civil Rights movement. It’s a pared-down version of a larger exhibit that was previously shown at Roswell City Hall.

“We use photographs from here, from people who have donated photographs to the archives,” DeNiro said.

“It’s all to spotlight black history that is specifically local.”

All of the items and photographs come from the city’s Research Library and Archives, which is open to the public and is located on the second floor of the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. used in the past to put on exhibits about the Civil War in Roswell, textiles and the King family that have been located at Barrington Hall and Bulloch Hall.

Future exhibits may include Roswell’s more modern history, DeNiro said.

The festival is one of the largest and most comprehensive celebrations of black culture and history in the state, with events, performances and exhibits put on throughout the month of February.
