Fulton County Schools Officer Joy Myrick speaks to a class of fourth graders at the Ocee Elementary career day, Sept. 26.
Ocee Elementary shines spotlight on careers By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Third to fifth graders at Ocee Elementary School had an opportunity to think about their future Sept. 26 during a career day that featured 24 parents and community members. Speakers came from a wide range of industries, including civil engineers, an orthodontist, software developer, flight attendant and museum curator. The
professionals used a mix of presentation and Q&A to engage students, with some speakers asking trivia or giving away company swag. The event was part of the school’s college spirit week, which also included a day for teachers to talk about their college experience and a day to wear college sports gear. Ocee has hosted career days before, but this year saw increased community involvement, said Support Specialist Karin Kraker.
“We’re really excited we had such a great turnout,” Kraker said. “It’s a whole community effort to include as many careers as we can.” Some may think elementary school is early to be thinking about a career, but Kraker said it’s not too young to show students how their curriculum can be applied in the world. “We really want to instill that love of learning and seeing how far they can go with what they’re learning,” she said.
