Dear reader, Welcome to another edition of Medical Answer Book. We hope you find it to be a valuable resource throughout the year for local medical practitioners and services. Flipping through the pages, I am reminded of how lucky we are to live and work in a community as affluent as ours. It is affluent, in part, because of the high-quality medical care its residents enjoy. HANS APPEN Publisher The high quality medical care available here enhances our overall quality of life. When individuals receive timely and appropriate medical attention, they can recover faster from illnesses and injuries, reducing pain and suffering. Furthermore, it allows people to maintain their independence and enjoy a higher level of physical and mental well-being as they age. In addition, high-quality medical care is essential for economic and societal stability. Healthy individuals are more productive, contributing to a stronger workforce and economy. Moreover, it reduces the burden on public healthcare systems, ultimately decreasing the financial strain on governments and taxpayers. Lastly, high-quality medical care is in my opinion a fundamental human right. Access to it ensures that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, has the opportunity to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. It is the foundation of a just and equitable society, where the well-being of all its members is prioritized and safeguarded. I am grateful for these blessings here in metro Atlanta. Best,

Hans Appen, Publisher hans@appenmedia.com

Your journey to better hearing Brought to you by - Brooke Means, AuD, Doctor of Audiology

How do I know if I have hearing loss, and what causes it? Determining hearing loss can be quite challenging, and it’s difficult to grasp the full extent of what you might be missing. One common indicator is struggling to comprehend speech, especially in noisy or crowded environments. The most prevalent type of hearing loss results from prolonged exposure to excessive noise levels. Specific medical conditions can also damage the ear. The only surefire way to know is to undergo a comprehensive hearing assessment. Our team of Doctors of Audiology conducts thorough evaluations to identify the type of hearing loss you’re experiencing. The Academy of Doctors of Audiology recommends baseline hearing testing by the age of 55! Can hearing aids restore perfect hearing? Regrettably, they cannot. In my practice, I often convey to patients that even “normal”

8 | Medical Answer Book 2023

hearing is not flawless. However, hearing devices can be truly transformative. They make it easier to perceive sounds and employ cutting-edge sound processing to enhance the brain’s ability to understand signals. Moreover, an increasing body of research underscores the critical role of hearing in brain health. Actively using prescribed hearing aids can significantly reduce the risk of dementia. What hearing aid is best for me? The most suitable hearing aid depends on your specific hearing loss and your daily activities. An audiologist will suggest the optimal technology to meet your unique requirements. Additionally, you should consider the sound

quality you desire, keeping in mind that higher costs are associated with premium technological features that offer superior clarity and background noise reduction. Are hearing aids covered by insurance? While some insurance plans do cover a portion of the hearing aid cost, most do not. Our practice is in-network with Medicare and the majority of major insurance providers, and we file all diagnostic testing with insurance. We are more than happy to verify hearing aid benefits for our patients. How often should I repair and replace my hearing aid? Quality hearing aids can function effectively for an extended period with routine maintenance. Issues can arise from the accumulation of wax and moisture. At NGA, we educate our patients on proper care. Some opt to invest in a Concierge Service plan, which offers regular maintenance at our office every few months. Generally, hearing aids should be replaced after four to six years of use.

Common questions for the dermatologist Brought to you by Epiphany Dermatology

Q: Why Do I Need a Skin Exam? A: Annual skin checks are important — especially for patients with a personal or family history of skin issues or skin cancer. Patients with a history of melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or basal cell carcinoma may need a full skin check more than once a year. With regular appointments, your Epiphany provider can monitor issues closely and begin treatment if they notice a change. Some

10 | Medical Answer Book 2023

skin cancers progress quickly — particularly squamous cell carcinoma which can develop over weeks. Even if you haven’t previously received a skin cancer diagnosis, these checks are vitally important for patients with a history of tanning bed use, blistering sunburns, or a high number of moles. With an annual, onceover evaluation, we can catch problems before they develop into something more serious. Early detection of skin cancer leads to better outcomes. Q: What Should I Expect During a Skin Exam? A: Most skin checks begin with information

gathering before the patient gets undressed and then gowned. Our medical staff will go over your medical history, medications, family health, and sun-exposure history. When the patient is ready, an Epiphany Dermatology provider will examine the skin from head to toe. Many doctors begin with the scalp, looking and feeling for lesions, and precancerous or cancerous spots. We continue in this process, looking down the extremities towards the hands and feet — even in between toes and on the bottoms of the feet. Doctors may examine the genital area, particularly if there is a spot of concern, but this isn’t required. The full exam will take approximately ten minutes.

Fraxel & the magic of Microtreatment Brought to you by - Brent Taylor, MD, Premiere Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta

Imagine that you are ten years old, returning from recess and running up the stairs with a sharp stick you found on the playground. Your best friend Susie-Lou distracts you. You trip, and the stick pierces your arm. You are upset, but Susie shares her bubble gum, and the school nurse cleans and dresses the injury and makes you feel better. In the months that follow, you develop a scar at the site of the injury. Next, imagine you’re at the pediatrician, and you receive a shot. The same basic circumstance happened. A sharp object pierced your skin. However, in the months that follow, no scar develops where you had the shot. The tiny needle leaves no mark. Why is that? A large injury in normal skin heals with a scar. A tiny injury in normal skin heals with no scar. But now for the twist: What do you imagine will happen if you make a tiny injury in scarred skin? Will it heal back into the same scar that it was before? Will the scar get worse? Or will magic happen? Amazingly, if you pierce a scar with a small enough injury, your body will actually replace some of the damaged scar with normal skin. All this assumes proper sterility and technique, but you read that correctly…. Poke normal skin with a large sharp object and you get a scar. Poke a scar with a small enough sharp object, and you get normal skin. If you just poke a scar with a single small needle, the improvement in the scar will be too small to notice. But what if you could introduce microinjuries on a larger scale? A hundred

12 | Medical Answer Book 2023

vaccine needles entering a scar? Well, if you pack those small injuries too closely together, then your body perceives the small injuries as one big injury, and you still get a scar. But if you separate the needle injuries enough in a sterile manner with no complications, then the body will perceive the injuries as separate and distinct and heal in such a way that scar gets replaced with normal skin. This discovery underlies multiple amazing treatments in dermatology. When I was in San Diego at my fellowship at Scripps Clinic, we participated in a collaboration with the naval hospital to treat veterans with burns. Scripps owns a very powerful laser that can cause microscopic burns to be introduced into the skin of patients with very thick burn injuries. The laser beams were “fractionated” – separated into individual beams so that the body perceives them as individual injuries instead of one large injury. Similar to hundreds of small needles in our thought experiment, these microscopic laser beams enter the skin, create microinjury zones, and replace scars with normal skin. My mentor shared with me that beams must be separate enough that the most scarred tissue that you can hope to replace in any one session is about 5%. More aggressive treatment could actually be counterproductive because some of the beams of light would be too close together and be perceived as one large beam and worsen a scar. But 5% turns out to be enough. Veterans with burns underwent one treatment per month for ten to twenty months. I witnessed patients whose scars tethered their heads to their shoulder gradually gain mobility in their necks as the skin became soft and pliable instead of hard, rope-like and restrictive. These treatments restored not only a more normal appearance but also range of motion and function.

Fractionated lasers repair damaged/ wounded skin. Wounded skin can take on many forms such as burns and thick scars from injury but also common damage from a lived life: aesthetic attributes such as discoloration, acne scars, wrinkles, and laxity. All of these are merely visible damaged skin. Fraxel® is a brand of fractionated laser that is an effective solution for many aesthetic concerns. Fraxel® uses small laser beam injuries to replace damaged or aged skin with skin that is healed and improved. Collagen formation, skin tightening, and blemish elimination occurs during wound healing after fractionated laser treatment. The Fraxel® DUAL in our office utilizes a shallow wavelength of light to address superficial cosmetic concerns such as freckles and brown spots while simultaneously using a second wavelength to treat more deeply, reduce wrinkles and assist with skin tightening. For most cosmetic applications, one to three treatments can produce very satisfying aesthetic results. Fractionated laser treatments really are magical. I still marvel at the fact that large injuries scar, but small enough injuries heal. Is Fraxel® right for you? In our practice, Kathryn Filipek, PA-C performs cosmetic treatments including Fraxel®, microneedling, Excel V laser treatments, filler, Botox®, sclerotherapy and more. If you are interested in learning more about these and other exciting treatment options, please call Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta. We are a full-service dermatology practice with true expertise in Mohs surgery, general dermatology including skin exams and aesthetic treatments. We hope that you enjoyed this peek into laser technology and fractionation. It is our privilege to take care of you.

Radiant eye health after 40: A brighter future awaits

Georgia Eye Partners shares what you should know Brought to you by - Dr. Goldstein, Georgia Eye Partners

As we age, our bodies experience changes, and our eyes are no exception. The process of aging can give rise to a range of eye-related issues, including difficulties with close-up vision, alterations in visual perception, and increased dryness. Once we cross the threshold of 40, age-related eye problems tend to become more prevalent, particularly if there’s a family history of eye conditions or a prior need for eyeglasses. The good news is that most of these issues are manageable with the right care. Common eye issues that often affect individuals aged 40 and above include: Refractive Errors: These conditions,

14 | Medical Answer Book 2023

leading to nearsightedness and farsightedness, frequently manifest before the age of 40 and may worsen over time, necessitating the use of reading glasses, regular eyeglasses, or contact lenses. Cataracts: Characterized by the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, cataracts can impede clear vision. Although they can’t be prevented, measures like wearing sunglasses, controlling blood sugar, and avoiding smoking can slow their progression. Surgical removal, often performed with laser technology, provides precise treatment options. Glaucoma: Marked by increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma can lead to vision loss. Treatment approaches may include eye drops, laser surgery, or incisional procedures. Dry Eye Disease: Resulting from insufficient or low-quality tears, dry eye disease presents

with symptoms such as burning and blurred vision. Prevention strategies encompass environmental control, dietary considerations, and regular exercise. Treatment options range from over-the-counter drops to prescription medications and minor procedures. For those aged 40 and older, regular eye screenings are vital to detect early signs of these issues. Individuals with diabetes, systemic medical conditions, or a family history of such conditions may require more frequent screenings. Preserving good eye health is a proactive step towards safeguarding your vision as you age. At Georgia Eye Partners, we are dedicated to helping you achieve optimal eye health. You can schedule your appointment online by visiting gaeyepartners.com or by calling 404-531-9988. Our team is eager to help you improve your vision!

Improving Specialist in cancer treatment Integrative Oncology Brought to you by - Jonathan Stegall, MD, The Center for Advanced Medicine

Q: How is cancer treatment different today than it has been in the past? A: The field of oncology is changing rapidly. We now have more tools in our tool chest than ever before, ranging from chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation to hyperthermia, mistletoe, nutrition, supplementation, and stress reduction therapies. The art of cancer treatment today is to choose which treatments are best for each patient on a case-by-case basis, in order to maximize treatment effectiveness and minimize side effects while enhancing overall health. This field is known as integrative oncology, and I believe it is the best way to treat cancer.

Cancer Treatments Including: Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Nutrition Supplementation

Q: How do you choose which cancer treatment(s) to recommend for each patient? A: I view each cancer case like a fingerprint – no two are exactly alike. Each patient’s internal environment is a unique culmination of his or her specific cancer diagnosis, genetics, lifetime environmental exposures, and even emotional stressors. Every detail matters. Using a combination of advanced diagnostic and lab testing, as well as a thorough understanding of each patient’s unique history, a personalized treatment plan is developed. This is contrary to the one-size-fits-all approach many oncologists today are still using. Q: What advice would you give to patients investigating cancer treatment options for themselves or a loved one? A: Knowledge is power! I encourage patients (and their families) to do their research and not feel rushed into a decision. Oncology can be a very fear-based specialty if we aren’t careful, and I find that approach to be counterproductive. Choosing which treatments to pursue is a huge decision, and patients should feel confident in their decisions. However, spending too much time trying to find the perfect treatment is likely to be detrimental, not only because many cancers are aggressive, but also because there is a lot of bad information out there (especially on the internet!). Q: How can patients get more information? A: The best way is to visit my website, drstegall.com, where I share a wide range of helpful information in a variety of formats, including videos as well as links to other resources. These include my bestselling book, Cancer Secrets, now in its second edition, as well as my new book, Fasting from Cancer. These can be purchased on Amazon in paperback and Kindle formats. My award-winning podcast, The Cancer Secrets Podcast, can also be accessed on the site or through iTunes. Finally, there is also information about my online cancer course, Cancer Secrets University. My goal is to provide as much information as possible for cancer patients and their loved ones. For those individuals looking for an integrative cancer treatment approach, my office number is (770) 5512730, and my practice website is tcfam.com.

Congratulations to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta for their 6th straight win for Best Dermatologist of North Atlanta! Brought to you by – Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta

practice back to fully usable again! Dr. Taylor: Thank you, Alyssa.

In years past, I have sat down with Dr. Taylor to learn a bit more about him as a dermatologist and a Mohs surgeon. This year, with his office finishing construction, we gathered to discuss the changes Premier Dermatology has undergone and the gratitude he has for his patients.

At Premier Dermatology, Brent Taylor, MD, and his team offer transformative, personalized care using state-of-the-art techniques. With expertise in Mohs surgery and in reconstruction after skin cancer removal, Dr. Taylor helps patients achieve cancer-free results while optimizing aesthetic outcomes. What truly sets Dr. Taylor apart as a surgeon is his commitment to addressing a patient’s skin cancer in a holistic manner. He does not consider his job complete just because a skin cancer has been successfully treated. He prides himself on following through with patients. He employs multiple technologies such as lasers and microneedling to assure that scars and reconstructive results are optimized. He helps patients explore preventative methods ranging from blue light therapy to oral medications to avoid future cancers. “Dr. Taylor doesn’t just help patients treat the skin cancer of the moment. He helps them avoid the skin cancers of tomorrow.” Dr. Taylor’s practice is a full-service dermatology clinic. Full body skin exams are available with either a male or female provider. The clinic is proud to provide a wide array of treatments for medical and cosmetic sun damage, from blue light therapy to chemical peels and laser photofacials. Aesthetic treatments include Botox®, fillers, chemical peels, sclerotherapy, Fraxel and Excel V laser and more. For exceptional care that goes beyond skin-deep, look no further than Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta.

Alyssa: Hey Dr. Taylor. Wow there’s a lot going on here. It looks the same but different. I heard you had a flood? What happened and what has happened since? Dr. Taylor: Yes, we did! Well, it was Christmas Eve at 6:30pm. My family (including myself) were all in Christmas pajamas. I was picking up our traditional to go Chinese food when my wife called and said that the police had called to inform her that the motion sensors were going off in the practice. My wife and I jumped into the car, still in our Christmas pajamas and headed to the practice with police on the way. When we entered the parking lot, water was rushing out from the front doors of the bottom floor of our building. Two firemen met us at the front door and said “It’s bad.” As it turns out, all of the prepping for the cold snap that we did in our floor of the building did not prevent the sprinkler line from rupturing in the attic. The flood was extensive. Roughly 75% of our practice was damaged, leaving us to rip out and rebuild! It’s been a long, slow process, partially because so many houses and buildings experienced floods that there was a wait list for insurance claims and for every step of the demolition and reconstruction process. The

20 | Medical Answer Book 2023

Christmas Eve cold snap last year really hit us hard. Alyssa: Well, it looks beautiful again. It must be such a relief to be back in an attractive and functional space. How has working during this time been? Dr. Taylor: Honestly, it’s been fine. Not ideal but fine. My staff is amazing. Truly! They never complained. We kept everyone’s hours and we just made do with the one section of the practice that was still usable. Thank goodness my Mohs laboratory and five patient exam rooms were undamaged, so we were still able to take great care of patients. Also, my patients are truly the best! They were all so genuinely concerned for us and understanding of our situation. We live in an area where great care is abundant, and people have options in who they see for healthcare. I am so fortunate to

Dunwoody attempts to shorten ambulance response times By HAYDEN SUMLIN Appen Media / November 2023 Local governments across Georgia struggle with slow ambulance response times, which has motivated Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch to focus on addressing the spillover effect from the COVID-19 pandemic. The City Council unanimously approved a contract Oct. 30 with DeKalb County and American Medical Response for one dedicated Advanced Life Support ambulance for the City of Dunwoody. The cost is $129.38 an hour, or $566,684 a year. The City Council had previously budgeted funds from the American Rescue Plan Act for this purpose. The 5-year contract signed in November 2019 allowed for local jurisdictions to contract with AMR directly for additional services. City staff said they believe one ambulance staffed with a paramedic, an emergency medical technician and operated from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. will make a significant impact on response times and quality of service. However, a rise in ambulance response times plagued Dunwoody residents before the COVID-19 pandemic. DeKalb County’s contracted provider, American Medical Response, has been the subject of concern for Mayor Deutsch going back to her first year on the City Council in 2012. DeKalb County and the City of Dunwoody entered a memorandum of understanding related to emergency medical services in June 2013, which outlined service response times and other requirements of the county. American Medical Response is a private

company from Colorado, which collects fees from clients, insurers, Medicare and Medicaid. State regulations give DeKalb County the regional license for ambulance services and prevent Dunwoody from operating their own EMS. In May 2018, the City Council voted unanimously to declare an “EMS emergency,” after years of complaining to county officials about AMR’s response times. The Region 3 EMS Council, a division of the state Department of Health, created a subcommittee to review DeKalb’s EMS system countywide and consider Dunwoody’s request for its own ambulance zone in August 2018. Ultimately, the subcommittee said the county had made significant improvements to ambulance response times in Dunwoody and dismissed the request for Dunwoody’s own EMS zone. DeKalb County’s first contract with AMR ended on Dec. 1, 2018. In 2019, the City Council sought intervention from state health authorities to create a new EMS zone for the city. Dunwoody officials then argued DeKalb County violated the MOU in July 2019 because of slow response times. The MOU did not result in shortened response times, despite AMR conducting their shift changes at the Dekalb Fire Stations within city limits, Mayor Deutsch said. While AMR was fined more than $2 million by DeKalb County for consistently failing to meet contractual standards, the county signed a new contract with American Medical Response in 2019. Following the DeKalb Commission’s

unanimous approval of the contract, AMR Regional Director Terence Ramotar said the new agreement was “completely different than it was for the past five to six years.” The 5-year contract signed in November 2019 allowed for local jurisdictions to contract with AMR directly for additional services and created required performance standards. While Mayor Deutsch said response times had improved throughout 2019, the pandemic made a bad situation worse for Dunwoody residents seeking emergency medical services. Earlier this year, Mayor Lynn Deutsch asked the DeKalb County legislative delegation to support standards for emergency service providers and to give some control of EMS to local municipalities. While two pieces of legislation giving cities in Georgia flexibility to contract their own ambulance services failed to pass in the 2022 legislative session, the bills will be on the agenda in January 2024. Speaking to the City Council in August 2022, DeKalb County Fire Chief Darnell Fullum reported that the struggle to find ambulance staff and respond to emergencies is happening throughout the state. At the City Council meeting Oct. 30, Chief Fullum assured council the city’s agreement will not affect the MOU with DeKalb and Dunwoody or the number of ambulances currently assigned to the city. So, Dunwoody has secured an additional ambulance to serve residents, without sacrificing ambulances contracted by the county. “I appreciate your willingness to work with us and to look outside the box for solutions for everyone dealing with this,” Mayor Deutsch said. “This is a really big challenge that’s going to get tougher. Thank you.” CITY OF DUNWOODY/PROVIDED

he widespread fear of going to the dentist is nothing new. Fortunately for patients of all ages, North Atlanta Family Dentistry understands this anxiety and prioritizes comfort when providing specialized patient care. Before moving forward with the necessary treatments, skilled doctors and hygienists focus on calming the nerves of anxious patients with a soothing environment where no questions go unanswered. “It’s a very common fear. We hear it every day,” said Dr. Liliana Rios, one of the practice’s associate doctors specializing in cosmetic dentistry. “I think our biggest goal is to restore patients’ confidence in dentistry.” North Atlanta Family Dentistry has remained a trusted practice for more than 22 years. Creek, the practice quickly grew and expanded to a second location in Cumming, where they could care for more patients and extend the practice’s outreach. She attributes the success to the people surrounding her each day, with many patients remaining loyal since the practice first opened. “We have wonderful patients, and our staff is very extraordinary, capable, and talented,” Dr. Vargas said. “We treat everybody as a family. It’s very patient-oriented. We try to make sure the patient is comfortable…People have been with me for 20 years. They don’t trust anybody else.” One of the biggest ways the practice provides peace of mind for patients is ensuring that they remain well-informed about treatments and procedures every step of the way. Rather than assuming patients’ trust, they earn it from those experiencing any

fears or uncertainties. Dr. Vargas notes the common issue with many practices involves treating the patient while they “don’t know why” certain procedures are being done. “We educate [patients] on their dental health and explain why we are doing whatever needs to be done. We educate them on their dental treatment,” Dr. Vargas said. “We try to make sure that the patient is involved and that they own their treatment.” Being strongly aware of previous dental experiences for many patients, the practice offers sedation dentistry for those with certain fears, anxieties or disabilities who prefer or require to be unconscious during treatment. Sedation also reduces the number of appointments by allowing doctors to complete the procedure in a single visit. “We have a lot of patients that have unfortunately had some bad experiences in the past. Sedation can really ease their discomfort,” Dr. Rios said. “One of the biggest things that people look for and love is that we offer sedation…we can do everything in one day with the patient just being asleep and comfortable.” North Atlanta Family Dentistry strives to deliver superior patient care with the field’s best doctors using the latest technology and developments. Fighting to eliminate the stigma that goes along with dental appointments, they work to provide patients with a renewed sense of assurance in their health journey. “We prefer patients to be confident in coming here and comfortable and that they’re confident in their smiles again,” Dr. Rios said. Forsyth schools address suicide through Sources of Strength By SHELBY ISRAEL Appen Media / November 2023 To match its growing student population, Forsyth County Schools has bolstered its suicide prevention and mental health toolkits to equip students and staff to tackle issues at the start. Like most school districts, Forsyth County employs counselors and psychological staff to help students navigate difficult times and trauma. Its staff also receives mandatory annual training under the 2015 Jason Flatt Act, which promotes youth suicide awareness and prevention. But, Forsyth County Schools also uses the Sources of Strength model, a national prevention program aimed to instill positivity and support before students engage in potentially harmful behaviors. Student Support Facilitator Lindsey Simpson, who trains the schools that participate in the program, said Sources of Strength is based on a strengths wheel, which includes mental health, family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality and physical health. “If you saw Sources of Strength within a school building, you would never know it’s a suicide prevention program because they are so focused on those eight particular strengths that our young people have within their lives,” she said. A preventative model The strengths wheel serves as the foundation of the program and is used to engage students in mindfulness to prevent suicidal thoughts and behavior. “… sometimes we do experience big emotions,” Simpson said. “We may have, you know, a short period of depression, when we lose a loved one, we lose a pet, whatever that may be in our lives, but how can we rely on these strengths when we're going through that difficult time within our lives?” Simpon said seven elementary, eight middle and five high schools implement the program. During the 2022-23 academic year, Schools Student Support trained 353 new peer leaders and 110 adult advisors for the program in middle and high schools. Since the beginning of the 2023-24 school year, 151 adult advisors and 348 peer leaders have been trained in the participating secondary schools. The elementary schools use a K5 model that enforces the protective factors on the strengths wheel but does not have trained adult advisors and peer leaders. In the grades six through 12 model, Sources

24 | Medical Answer Book 2023

of Strength recruits students to serve as peer leaders, who field students’ needs and also serve as a link for those who may be hesitant to speak with adults. “One important thing to note about [Sources of Strength] is that it's a peer-led program,” Simpson said. “So, what we know is that young people don't always, like, listen to adults, so what we like to do is use the voice of these peer leaders within their school buildings.” Simpson said the peer leaders are recruited, trained and meet at least twice monthly to discuss the specific needs of their schools. The peer leaders can also help students identify trusted adults by making recommendations of people they know. “Well, we have seen it takes a couple of years to sustain Sources within a school, but usually about year two, everybody knows what Sources is,” Simpson said. “They're able to recognize what the strengths wheel looks like. They're able to, you know, say what those strengths or protective factors are. And then about year three, there's a lot more involvement.” A peer-led initiative In addition to trusted adults, Sources of Strength also recruits mentors, a person who cares about a student’s well-being and checks in at the end of the week. These mentors can be the trusted adult a student chooses or a parent, coach or friend. Simpson emphasized the prevention efforts are student initiatives and not recommendations from staff. While the school district receives grant funding for Sources of Strength campaigns and materials, the goal is for students to get their peers involved and launch campaigns themselves. “Our schools implement ‘We Belong’ campaigns to help all the students feel like they belong and feel like they are connected within that school environment,” Simpson said. She said Forsyth County Schools has employed a dedicated prevention specialist

since at least 2016 when she started interning at the district. However, this year the school system hired its first mental health facilitator to connect students and families with resources. The school district also teaches students Signs of Suicide, which helps them to identify signs of depression and suicide in themselves and peers. In addition to the wellness component, Simpson said Forsyth County Schools’ prevention efforts hope to eliminate behaviors that can result from depression, such as substance abuse. She said a growing issue since 2018 is vaping. “Our young people are very curious because their friends may use, or they're feeling that stress and they're overwhelmed, and, like, their friends have said like, ‘Hey, this helps me, like, kind of take the edge off,’” Simpson said. “… when our young people start using so early, it’s truly setting them up for an addictive lifestyle.”

Preventative, General, Restorative, and Cosmetic Dentistry for the entire family

Brought to you by - Crabapple Dental

Dentistry, an ever-evolving field, requires relentless training, continuous learning, and staying updated with the latest developments. At Crabapple Dental, our commitment to staying at the forefront of advancements has led us to harness the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to demystify dental practices. Contrary to being complex, AI simply entails software analyzing numerous images to present and quantify dental issues. How does the dentist use AI? The significance lies in early detection. Minor concerns like tiny chips or small cavities can snowball into significant health problems if left unattended. With AI, we’ve heightened our capabilities by integrating technology that monitors changing bone levels and precisely measures decay. How is AI used to improve patient health? AI isn’t a replacement for expertise but rather a tool that minimizes subjective interpretations in health issue detection. It doesn’t supplant our knowledge; instead, it offers a consistent and reliable method to preserve your well-being. For instance, have you encountered situations where one dentist flags new cavities while the previous practitioner remained silent on potential issues? Crabapple Dental utilizes AI to quantifiably demonstrate concerns, providing you with a clear understanding of necessary actions. Does AI cost any extra money to the patient? At Crabapple Dental, our amalgamation of expertise and AI fosters a definitive path toward improved health. This synergy propels us towards a future where innovation optimizes patient care and well-being. At Crabapple Dental. Our doctors use AI as an adjunctive tool and there is no extra cost to the patient.

SmartMED aims to innovate health care in Metro Atlanta By SHELBY ISRAEL Appen Media / November 2023 SmartMED, a drive-thru medical clinic at 612 Holcomb Bridge Road, seeks to innovate health care for Metro Atlanta residents by providing a quick and accessible alternative to the traditional office. Roswell residents Stacy and Dr. Luke Lathrop founded SmartMED in fall 2022 after operating a COVID-19 testing site at Fellowship Bible Church. Luke Lathrop works as an emergency room physician in Kennesaw, and while Stacy Lathrop said she had no medical background, as a mother of two young children, she had plenty of experience at doctor’s offices. Stacy Lathrop, who now serves as SmartMED’s CEO, said it was a visit to the pediatrician at the beginning of the pandemic that inspired the idea. “What was so nice about this is that because it was COVID, everything was shut at the pediatrician, so they actually came to the door to look at their ears and listen to them and had the whole visit without them getting out of the car,” she said. “And it kind of occurred to me at that point … why is everyone being forced to go inside and wait on appointments when you could just roll up and see a physician at the car door?” The couple conceived a similar set-up but for general medical services and began surveying patients to field interest in the concept.

28 | Medical Answer Book 2023

“… when COVID testing ended, we had this huge database of maybe 24,000 people that we had tested for COVID that had really demonstrated an interest in being seen for all different types of medical conditions in the car,” Stacy Lathrop said. “And we took that feedback, and we developed a model that is completely patient centric.” Patients approach SmartMED much the same as customers would approach a fast-food drive-thru. Once a patient arrives, a staff member takes their insurance information and identification and creates a medical chart. If a patient is new, they fill out two forms before pulling ahead to the second station, where another staff member takes their vitals. Finally, the patient pulls ahead to be evaluated by the physician. Typically, a visit takes between 10 and 15 minutes, and it is completely done at the patient’s car door. The drive-thru clinic also includes a full-service laboratory. Luke Lathrop said all lab tests are completed onsite, but staff calls the patient when their results come in, so waiting is unnecessary. “Patients really like the convenience factor, that they don't have to wait,” Luke Lathrop said. “There's no real downtime. The whole time, they’re registered, they're getting examined, vital signs are being taken, they’re discussing with the physician. So, the whole time is quality time, and then they're on their way.” Continued on next page

Outreach program bridges gaps for veterans in need By AMBER PERRY Appen Media / November 2023

SmartMED at 612 Holcomb Bridge Road offers a full-service laboratory and treatments ranging from infections to weight loss. Stacy and Dr. Luke Lathrop founded the clinic in 2022 after operating a testing site during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Insurance companies, excluding Anthem, consider SmartMED a general medicine practice, so patients pay a primary care copay. SmartMED is in-network with all major insurance providers. “We wanted to do more than just save people time,” Stacy Lathrop said. “We wanted to provide exceptional medical care that’s convenient, thorough and fast.” The Lathrops first began offering services at their previous location, a tent at Fellowship Bible Church, around October 2022. The clinic offers diagnoses for pink eye, ear and upper respiratory infections; flu and RSV treatments; weight loss medication; IV hydration; and stitches and sutures. SmartMED staff also treat headaches, sinusitis, rashes, seasonal allergies, abscess drainage and infections. Taking advantage of the database they collected during their COVID testing, the couple had a list of patients to welcome to their new clinic. But, as time went on, the drive-thru cemented a loyal following for its speedy treatment and handson care.

“I mean, I'm on the phone with people, if they need our help, I'm on the phone with them until 9:30 at night and on weekends when we're not open,” Stacy Lathrop said. “I mean, they know that they can always reach us, and it's just been such a such a joy to bring this to the community and see their reaction, and it just really fills my heart.” Visit smartmeddrivethru.com for more information on services, hours and pricing.

More than 20 veterans and their families have been assisted since the Johns Creek Veterans Association got the ball rolling on an outreach program earlier this year. Mike Mizell, president of Johns Creek Veterans Association, or JCVA, said the program addresses veterans’ needs from mentoring to housing to providing transportation. When a World War II veteran passed away, he donated $37,000 from his estate to help the association start the initiative. “We're working with one veteran returning from five years in prison to try to get him back on his feet and get him integrated in the community, and then there’s another seeking residential addiction treatment,” Mizell said. A group of five to six dedicated volunteers, some with backgrounds in psychiatric care and post-traumatic stress disorder, work with other organizations to bridge any gaps. The association serves Johns Creek as well as in the immediate surrounding areas like Roswell, Alpharetta and South Forsyth County. Mizell said some members travel as far as the Alabama border. “We don't limit ourselves just to Johns Creek,” Mizell said. “I tell so many people we’re the Johns Creek Veterans Association because this is where we started.” The JCVA also collaborates with the City of Johns Creek for the Police Department’s Clinician and Officer Response Team, which employs a crisis intervention officer and crisis response clinician to crisis situations. If a veteran who commits a misdemeanor agrees to work with any one of the association’s volunteer mentors, Mizell said police shred the incident report. “We've also already been told that the cities of Roswell and

Alpharetta are also interested in this program,” Mizell said. “So, that will be fantastic.” Mizell described the shock veterans tend to experience when assimilating into regular society and empathized with those who may not know where to go for assistance. When Mizell retired from the U.S. Army Military Police Corps, he said he didn’t know what benefits he was entitled to. “When you get back, you're on your own,” Mizell said. “You're out the door with nobody for you to turn back to.” But, he came to find the Georgia Department of Veterans Service. Mizell said the office serves as a representative for veterans to Veteran Affairs. “I try to tell veterans, ‘You don't fight the VA,’” Mizell said. “‘These people are paid state employees, and their only job is to help you and your benefit.’” He noted the Type A personality among military folks which often stands as a barrier to assistance. “They're taught to, ‘Pull up your big boy panties and deal with it,’ you know,” Mizell said. “‘If there's no blood, and there's no bones, fix it and move on,’ kind of thing. It's real hard for us to admit that we don't have the capability to do something on our own.” Mizell said he always wanted to move the JCVA away from being solely a social organization to one centered around community support. He said there are plans to continue this effort after his third term as president ends across the state where there are more than 700,000 veterans. Mizell recently started a nonprofit he named “The Colonel’s Cup Foundation” to take his services outside of the Atlanta area, an idea he had after his security company of two decades died with the COVID-19 pandemic. “I just asked the good Lord, ‘What do you want me to do?’” Mizell said. “And, I think the message is clear.”

Community tosses medications during nationwide DEA event By AMBER PERRY Appen Media / November 2023 As part of a biannual DEA-led initiative, the Johns Creek community had the opportunity to safely discard prescription medications, either expired or no longer needed, at Kroger on State Bridge Road. Cardboard bins were placed outside for individuals to throw out pill medications. And, for the second time, there was an option to dispose of liquid medications, made possible through a partnership with the Fulton County Board of Health. Medicines, like cough syrup, were poured into a jug with a charcoal mixture that deactivates active ingredients. “All the medication is in there deactivated by that mixture, where there's no risk of environmental impact in the landfill and also, no risk of someone getting in there to try to misuse what's in that jug,” said Kendal McMichael, youth and volunteer coordinator for the One Johns Creek Coalition. Since its incorporation in 2020, One Johns Creek has participated in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day held every April and October. The coalition, centered around reducing youth substance abuse, pulls together representatives from all sectors of Johns Creek to accomplish seven strategies of community change, including things like modifying policies and laws and minimizing barriers. McMichael said 90 percent of medications that are misused by students, or anyone under 18, come from the home medicine cabinet. “That's why we're such strong advocates for getting those medications out of the home medicine cabinet if they're expired or no longer needed, and then also a locking and/or monitoring system in the home for medications that are needed, so that we're really protecting our families and our students as much as possible,” McMichael said.

Volunteers with One Johns Creek, a coalition aimed at reducing youth substance abuse, as well as members of the Johns Creek Police Department and the Citizens Auxiliary Police Services gather at the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back event in October at Kroger on State Bridge Road.

The group came equipped with a number of informational brochures; File of Life cards and magnets used by paramedics during at-home medical emergencies; and Naloxone spray, an opioid overdose treatment. Deterra bags were also up for grabs, which allows individuals to dispose of prescription drugs. The bag works by placing unused pills, patches or liquids inside, filling the pouch halfway with water, then sealing and shaking the bag to dispose of it in normal trash. In addition to student volunteers with One Johns Creek, the Johns Creek Police Department and members of the Citizens Auxiliary Police Services, or CAPS, were there to lend a hand. The day had been a slow one for volunteers. McMichael said there has been a decline in

collections in recent years, from 300 pounds in October 2020 to about 160 pounds in April. But, she said that was likely because there has been less stockpiling of unused medications due to a new drug drop-off location at Johns Creek City Hall. Passed in 2021, the agreement between One Johns Creek, which sits under the nonprofit Pathways2Life, and the City of Johns Creek has allowed for easier collaboration for citywide initiatives. October marks the first time One Johns Creek and the city have partnered up for a community survey that addresses alcohol and prescription/over-the-counter medications. A second survey on nicotine and marijuana will be sent out in November. McMichael said the surveys will allow the coalition to collect the trend data needed to receive grant funding. After the COVID-19 pandemic hit, students were no longer mandated to take the Georgia Student Health Survey which caused a data deficit for One Johns Creek. But, starting next semester, McMichael said the survey will be mandatory again and that the group has been in conversation with Fulton County to make the community aware. “We really want to know what's going on with our students and in our communities in order to figure out what the best initiatives are,” McMichael said. Cardboard bins placed outside of Kroger on State Bridge Road allowed individuals to throw out pill medications during the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back event in October.

As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, husband and wife team Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes know some common issues that can be addressed with robotic surgery are hysterectomies, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain and heavy bleeding. Striving to do their best for the women in the community, Dr. John said, “It’s a blessing to be able to do minimally invasive and robotic surgeries on patients suffering from longstanding issues such as infertility from endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic adhesive disease.” Established in 2010, Modern OBGYN has four convenient office locations in Johns Creek, Alpharetta at Avalon, and the newest office located on the Northside Forsyth campus in Cumming. Along with compassionate care for patients and their needed surgeries, Modern OBGYN strives to give expecting mothers the support they need by making sure that the mothers personally know their provider. Modern OBGYN has a highly experienced team of Certified Nurse Midwives who work alongside each physician to provide well-rounded, patient-centered and personal

You’ll always know us, and we’ll always know you,” Dr. John said. “No surprises when it comes time to deliver!” Dr. John says the best part about building provider-patient relationships is, “We can help them become pregnant, and come full-circle to care for them during their pregnancy and delivery. It’s the full spectrum of caring for what’s so important to a woman’s life—her health and her family.”
