MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman reported that an online scammer gained remote control over her computer and had called her incessantly.

The woman said that she received a call from a man who claimed he was with McAfee Security and that she needed to renew her computer software. The man guided her through the process of changing her settings to allow him remote access.

Car window smashed in gym parking lot

Police apprehend man for electronics theft

MILTON, Ga. — A car’s window was smashed and its door damaged while parked outside a gym, but nothing was taken inside.

A Milton woman reported to police Feb. 21 that the rear window of her car had been shattered and the front passenger door lock was damaged while the vehicle was parked outside the Planet Fitness on Ga. 9. She said she parked the car around 10:15 p.m. and returned approximately 30 minutes later. The reporting officer said it did not appear anyone had entered the car and the woman said nothing had been taken from the car.

She believes someone smashed the rear window after seeing a packing in the rear seat before realizing it was a child’s toy.

MILTON, Ga. — Milton Police cited a man for disorderly conduct after an employee at the Fry’s Electronics on Ga. 9 reported the man had stolen items from the store.

A store employee said she witnessed the suspect place electronics into the waistband of his pants and walk out the store. The employee confronted the man in the parking lot and said he ran away.

Officers located the man at the nearby Walmart and found three Bluetooth speakers valued at $100 each tucked into his waist. The Fry’s employee said she recovered a headphone set the suspect dropped while he ran from the store.

The woman said the man began manipulating her computer before she realized what he was doing. The woman unplugged her computer but said she was not sure if the caller was able to access any of her personal information.

She said the man called her 15 times the same day and 20 time the next day. She did not answer. Milton Police advised the woman to block the number and monitor all of her accounts and credit.

MILTON, Ga. — A Milton man reported to police Feb. 22 that he suspected his wife of stealing his car and electronics from his home.

The man said he was arrested in Marietta for a probation violation on Jan. 31 and told his ex-wife to pick up his car. The man said his home key was on the key ring. He said he was released

Business executive reports being followed by car MILTON, Ga. — The CEO of a Milton business reported to police he was followed by a car, and he suspects it could be related to recent layoffs at the company.

The man said after leaving the business, located on Deerfield Parkway, around 2 p.m. on Feb. 23, he noticed another car in the parking lot and thought it was suspicious considering all the businesses at the location were closed on Saturdays.

followed him out of the lot and followed him along Deerfield Parkway. The business owner said he made multiple turns and the car continued to follow him.

He became suspicious and made quick maneuvers along Windward Parkway, changing from the left turn lane to the right turn lane, and the Fusion followed the same path. The man he used backroads to drive to a Starbucks along Windward Parkway and lost sight of the car. He then drove to Milton Police headquarters and reported the incident.

Food delivery driver arrested for DUI MILTON, Ga. — A food delivery driver was arrested for DUI after striking a mailbox and admitting to police she had been drinking.

Police responded to a call around 6 p.m. Feb. 24 from a driver who witnessed a car swerve and strike a mailbox along Providence Road. An officer spoke with the woman who said she was driving for Door Dash, a food delivery service, when she received a request. She told police she checked her phone and struck the mailbox.

The woman admitted to drinking while picking up a delivery and stated she was also on medication. The woman showed multiple signs of intoxication during a sobriety test, police said. A breathalyzer test showed the woman was under the legal alcohol limit, but the officer said based upon observations and experience, she was a “less safe driver.”

The woman was arrested for DUI multiple substances, failure to maintain lane and driver to use due care.

Milton considers ban on vape shops An ordinance presented to the Milton Planning Commission at its Feb. 27 meeting would prohibit new vape businesses from operating in Milton

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Only one vape shop currently operates within Milton, and a proposal coming down the pipeline would ensure no others can do business within the city. If adopted, an ordinance presented to the Milton Planning Commission at its Feb. 27 meeting would prohibit new vape businesses from operating in Milton.

The proposed ordinance defines a vape shop as any business that sells primarily alternative nicotine products, vape juice, or both.

The intention of the ordinance is not to curb nicotine use. Rather, the city is looking to reinforce a recently enacted ban on the use and sale of synthetic marijuana and opiates in Milton.

According to a presentation given to the Planning Commission, the vape shop ban, “…will hopefully assist in limiting the ongoing purchase and ingestion” of the synthetic drugs.

In a joint statement from Police Chief Rich Austin and Robyn Macdonald, zoning manager, the ordinance will supplement the ban on synthetic drugs.

“Both synthetic marijuana and opiate substitutes are often distributed via vape shops and gas stations,” the statement said. “By addressing it from both a product and distribution standpoint, we are better positioned to positively impact the ease of access by our local youth.”

Vapor King, located on Ga. 9, is the only operating vape business in the city.

The shop will be permitted to continue normal operation if the ban is passed.

According to city officials, Milton Police Department spoke with the owners of the shop recently after the passage of the synthetic marijuana ban. The owners said they do not sell synthetic drugs.

The first presentation of the ordinance was given at the Milton City Council meeting on March 4. The council could take a vote on the ordinance at its next regularly scheduled meeting on March 18.

Alpharetta approves redevelopment plan at North Point Sears site City says project will spark revival of major corridor

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A major step in revitalizing North Point Mall won City Council approval Feb. 25, when officials signed off on a plan that will transform the abandoned Sears site into a mixed-

use development.

Brookfield Properties wants to transform the vacant building and parking lot area into a modern complex that would include new, freestanding retail and restaurants, greenspace and 300 apartments. The project would also adjust North Point Circle, which surrounds the property, to accommodate a multi-use trail system for pedestrians and cyclists with tie-ins to nearby trails and the Big Creek Greenway.

The vote was 6-1, with Councilman Ben Burnett voting in opposition. Burnett did not speak on the subject.

Everyone else was less shy.

Brookfield Properties is moving forward with plans to convert the old Sears Department Store site at North Point Mall into a mixed-use area which will feature retail, restaurants, apartments, greenspace and a multi-use trail. The Alpharetta City Council approved the plan at its Feb. 25 meeting.

Councilman Dan Merkel called the decision a “game changer” for North Point and the city. He said he thinks the project will kick start a wave of property revitalization in the area.

Indeed, several nearby mall tenants praised the plan, saying the energy it will create will radiate outward.

Sheila Wilson, store manager for North Point Macy’s, told council members that Brookfield’s initiative has kindled a spirit of investment at her business.

“This allows the opportunity for Macy’s to invest again in this location,”

she said. “As you know, our company invests in mall locations that are being invested in. And, Macy’s believes in this location so much that we’re investing ahead of the game.”

Wilson said Macy’s plans to open a “Backstage” store within its current location this April. Plans are also underway to make improvements to the property, she said.

“To be able to live and work and play in the same community will mean so much to our colleagues and our store,”

Milton Police to host MPACT Town Hall meetings

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton Police will host four town hall meetings this year to connect residents with the agency and its MPACT officers. The meetings will be this week with a separate event for each of the city’s four MPACT areas, including the Deerfield, Crabapple, Birmingham and Hopewell districts.

MPACT, or Milton Police and Citizens Together, assigns officers to each of the city’s geographic areas to serve as liaisons to residents and who can be contacted directly by citizens.

Milton Capt. Charles Barstow said the meetings are informal but informative and important on many levels. That includes keeping officers in contact with residents, informing the community of the latest crime trends and safety techniques and holding the department accountable for ensuring criminal activity is dealt with effectively.

“It also allows our officers to be approached in a setting that is a little more relaxed and informal, which shows Milton that our officers as normal everyday people just like them,” Barstow said.

Milton Police began the meetings in 2017 and they have been well attended by residents. The feedback on the department has been positive, Barstow said.

“I don’t ever recall hearing a negative remark or receiving any negative feedback from anyone who has attended one of our MPACT Town Hall meetings,” Barstow said. “Milton residents show consistent satisfaction with the efforts of their police department.”

Barstow said residents should always call 911 for any issues where there is a danger to life or property, but the MPACT meetings can help officers address ongoing or quality of life concerns.

“I am quite certain that we have resolved numerous traffic complaints in each MPACT zone based on information received at an MPACT Town Hall meeting,” he said.

Celebration of life service set for former city arborist MILTON, Ga. — A celebration of life will be held this weekend for Mark Law, Milton’s former city arborist who passed away Feb. 27 after a long battle with cancer. The service will take place at 11 a.m. at the Northview Church of Christ, located at 1000 Northfield Court, Suite 200, in Roswell. All are encouraged to attend.

Law joined Milton when the city incorporated in 2006. He led Milton to its first “Tree City USA” designation in 2009 and was instrumental in the city earning the honor every year since. Law also helped design Milton’s gateway signs and built a model to ensure accuracy.

He also served to create the city’s tree canopy preservation ordinance.

Last month, Milton opened and

dedicated its arboretum at Bell Memorial Park in Law’s honor. Law had long envisioned the site to showcase trees and to inform park-users of the different species.

Law’s family has requested donations to a GoFundMe in lieu of flowers.

The campaign has set a goal of raising $6,900 for the “Mark Law Memorial Roundabout.” Law proposed a horse concept statue to be constructed at the future roundabout at Charlotte Drive.

The bronzed statue would stand 6-feet tall and be 8.5-feet wide and placed in the center of the roundabout.

Musician signed by local soars in country charts

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton businessman Ron Wallace seems to have a finger in every pie.

The former president of UPS International, Wallace owns the Olde Blind Dog, has produced multiple books, and he recently began Number One Group, a firm that includes publishing and music production.

Wallace’s recent signee, Cherie Oakley, quickly rose to the top of the Spotify country charts when her song, “Work It,” was released Feb. 23.

“I’ve been told by many people experienced with streaming that it is difficult to get into the top-10, and in just a few days the song was in the top-5 and seems to be holding,” Wallace said.

Oakley will bring her new hit and the rest of her stylings to the Atlanta area on March 14. Along with her bandmates, Oakley will perform at the Capitol March 14 for Georgia Production Day. Oakley signed to what Wallace calls a “360 Contract,” in which the artist receives funding, marketing and added opportunities in exchange for the music, marketing and performance rights.

Number One Group currently holds about 50 of Oakley’s songs in its cata-

logue, Wallace said, and there are more to come.

Oakley recorded six songs recently and four will be released over the next year.

The songs are being produced by Dann Huff who has won multiple Producer of the Year awards from the Country Music Association and who has worked with some of the music industry’s top artists.

An extended play, or EP, record of Oakley’s songs will also be released.

The future is bright for the artist who found a love for performing early in life.

In her youth, Oakley found her passion for music while traveling the country with her evangelist family, and began performing at 5.

After performing throughout the country at churches, fairs and festivals and performing in musical theater and film, Oakley wound up in Nashville and cemented her career.

She was a contestant on the first season the NBC’s “The Voice” and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs as a songwriter with “Turn On the Radio,” performed by Reba McEntire.

The artist has also performed on over 30 television and award shows and four music videos.

Business coach suggests getting comfortable with the uncomfortable

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Many people hold back in business and in life when faced with something uncomfortable, but it can cost them opportunities to grow, according to Mark McGraw, sales coach and owner of Sandler Training.

Speaking at the Feb. 28 meeting of the Roswell Rotary Club in Roswell Area Park, McGraw encouraged people to get out of their comfort zone.

McGraw coaches business owners, salespeople and leaders on how to get more out of their business and life. Whenever people want someone to change, McGraw said it’s important to first figure out how to get the self to change.

McGraw said that one quote in particular resonates with him and his approach: “The quality of your life is largely determined by your ability to learn how to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.”

Too many people, he added, want things to change, but don’t want to change themselves or their approach.

It’s impossible to get different results that way.

McGraw boiled the issue down to what he called wimp junctures, when opportunities for change arise, but people tend to wimp out and choose the most comfortable option. In his business, McGraw works to manage how people react when confronted with wimp junctions.

He’s identified three important steps in that process.

The first is to become aware of the wimp junctions

when they arise and to make decisions before they come up.

He shared a personal story of his weight-loss journey as an example of how his philosophy can be applied in daily life. McGraw lost and has kept off 50 pounds in part by deciding, before he even walks into a restaurant, to have a healthy meal.

The second step is to master at least one technique or tool for making and sticking to a decision to change.

Several times during his weight-loss journey, McGraw said he was tempted by desserts, so he developed a way to deal with that temptation without wrecking his diet.

For example, McGraw said that he figured out that about 80 percent of the pleasure he derived from dessert came from the first bite. So he would at times indulge with one bite and then salt the rest of the dessert so that he wouldn’t be tempted to eat more later.

The third and final step is to be gutsy for five seconds at a time instead of striving to maintain perfection the entire time.

“In surviving a wimp junction, we don’t have to be gutsy all the time,” McGraw said. “We need to be gutsy five seconds at a time. It’s those little pivotal moments that make a difference for us, so that we can identify these moments, decide what we’re going to do and then have a moment of courage.”

McGraw ended with an observation — that the most successful people he’s seen are people who are willing to act despite how they feel at the moment.

Lawmakers close loophole on school bus law

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com A bill signed into law this month by Gov. Brian Kemp clarifies the rules of engagement between drivers and school buses when stopped to load and unload children.

Senate Bill 25 clears up the “unintended consequences” of House Bill 978 passed last year, which raised concerns about when drivers had to stop for school buses.

According to legal opinions, the old law in place could be interpreted to allow drivers to continue driving as long as they were on the opposite side of the roadway divided by only a turn lane.

The new legislation allows only drivers on the opposite side of a four-lane roadway to continue traveling only if the roadway is separated by a grass median, unpaved area, or physical barrier (concrete wall, guardrails, etc.). A center turn lane does not qualify as a median.

SB 25 was one of the first pieces of legislation tackled by lawmakers in the early days of the current Legislative Session and passed quickly and unanimously in both chambers.

expectations clear when approaching a stopped school bus.

“Fulton County Schools completely supports the new law’s clarification of when to stop for a school bus during the student loading and/or unloading process,” said Sam Ham, executive director of the district’s Transportation Department. “The [law] will allow school districts and the State DOE to better educate the motoring public when it is necessary to stop for the school bus, ultimately enhancing student safety.”

Lawmakers chose to keep in place the fine of $250 for violating the school bus stop law, passed under HB 978. Previously, the fine had been up to $1,000.

Realtor stresses choice in price points ZKTeco to bring as Forsyth County continues to grow $5 million, 40 jobs

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County has a lot working in its favor in the real estate industry, according to Frank Norton, noted real estate expert in north Georgia.

Norton spoke at the CummingForsyth County Chamber of Commerce Commercial Real Estate Roundtable Feb. 28 at ServPro. He said the county’s demographics play a large role in the local housing market, and that leaders need to be aware of the importance of things such as affordable housing.

Norton said the estimated population of Forsyth County in 2018 was 227,967. He compared it to Johns Creek which has been an official city for more than a decade and had an estimated population in 2018 of 202,957.

“Your population growth is so strong, that it is eclipsing almost any other county in the state,” Norton said.

“A fairly sizeable wedge is coming out of Forsyth County and going to Johns Creek. Visualize what that will look like in 2040. In 2040, we are projecting Forsyth County to be somewhere in the 275,000-300,000 people.”

One challenge facing Forsyth is the lack of affordable housing for low income families and residents.

“The county has changed,” he said.

“We need housing. I have been preaching for 20 years that the key to a good, strong community is having multiple price points of housing. You have to have some low income, subsidized and

rental, some not subsidized and some luxury, and single-family residences.”

The average family, with average credit who want to buy the average house, will not live in Forsyth County, Norton said.

“You’re importing that labor to run the county,” he said. “That will get compounded more over the next five years than the last 20 years.”

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — ZKTeco, a global manufacturer of tag-tracking and biometric technology, will soon call Alpharetta home.

Gov. Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Economic Development announced Feb. 20 that the company is moving its U.S. headquarters from Fairfield, New Jersey to Fulton County. The move is expected to bring 40 new jobs and invest over $5 million in relocation and expansion.

The new jobs will consist of inside sales, technical support, research and development, light assembly, quality control and logistics personnel.

“I am pleased to welcome ZKTeco to Georgia,” Kemp said. “As global companies seek to expand in North America, they are finding that Georgia is an ideal location in terms of accessibility, costeffectiveness, access to skilled talent, and an excellent quality of life. I am confident that ZKTeco made the right decision to locate their U.S. headquarters in Alpharetta.”

The Alpharetta location will cover 5,000 square feet and will allow customers to physically interact with the technology.

Braves’ moneyball is actually making money Retain customers Unlike the Oakland A’s version of moneyball, the Atlanta Braves are actually making money. And judging from their recently released 2018 earnings, they are making a ton of it.

Geoff smith Mark Meltzer reAssurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com ported in the Atlanta Business Chronicle that the Braves took in $442 million in revenue last year, up 14.5 percent from the $386 million they took in in 2017 — and up nearly 69 percent since their last season at Turner Field.

Liberty Media, the owner of the Braves, said the increase in revenues had largely to do with the Braves winning the National League East and earning some homefield playoff games.

That brought in revenue through more ticket-sales and increased profits from concessions.

But another profit source for the Braves has been the real estate it owns in the Battery. Due to increased occupancy rates in 2018, the team generated $38 million more in revenue from its real estate holdings.

While the 2018 numbers have not been released for all the other Major League Baseball teams, in 2017, the Braves ranked 8th in the league with its $336 million in revenue. The $442 million they made last year would have moved them up to 5th place on that list.

If you did not read Michael Lewis’ book “Moneyball,” it tells the story of how the A’s used an algorithm to hire players they determined would score runs. This resulted in them hiring and trading for less sought-after players, but winning more games. Coincidentally, the A’s ranked dead last in 2017 in revenue.

As fans, most of us are probably more concerned with what the Braves are doing to win another pennant and put the team in contention for the World Series. Well, if you base success off of payroll, the Braves current roster ranks 20th out of 30 teams in terms of money spent. Statistically speaking, they didn’t have any superstars last year. Freddie Freeman had the 7th highest batting average and Nick Markakis had the 6th most hits. As a team, they statistically were better than most, but not really in the front of the pack. They had the 5th highest batting average, but were 19th in home runs, 11th in on-base percentage, and perhaps the most important team hitting statistic, they were 10th in runs scored.

The pitchers did a little better. They had the 7th best earned run average, allowed the 3rd fewest home runs, and again, most importantly, allowed the 8th least amount of runs.

It’s hard to say that Liberty Media did a lot in the off-season to drastically improve the Braves. Although it does feel great to get Brian McCann. He always looked out of place in another team’s uniform. And they took a chance on 33-year old Josh Donaldson. He is a former American League MVP third basement, but has been plagued by injuries the last several years. It would have been nice to get a dominant pitcher, but the Braves are touting their young talent as potential gamechangers.

We have a team that will compete and we have a stadium and an atmosphere that makes going to a game an awesome experience. The Battery has grown so much and will continue to grow with an up and coming $200 million expansion. Getting to the game early and hitting the bars and restaurants is way more important than it was at Turner Field.

The only thing standing in the way of continued revenue growth could very well be the continuation of these record rainfalls. Otherwise, Let’s Go Braves!

Number 1, don’t make promises that you can’t deliver; and number 2, if your customer expects something you know you can’t deliver, manage their expectations.

You can spend a lot of time, effort and money trying to consistently meet the expectations your customers have.

Managing customer expectations will also improve customer satisfaction. Happy customers will do more business with you, and are also more likely to recommend your business to others; both of which will help you grow your small business.

For that reason alone, one thing you should be thinking about when considering a home in Atlanta is its resale value — how much of a profit you can expect to make when you sell. This city is a growing metropolis with a dynamic housing market, so let’s look at some of the most common factors that can affect Atlanta home resale value.

1. Updates and Renovations There are many types of renovations, updates and upgrades you can do to a home to boost its value when putting it on the market. Kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor spaces tend to offer the greatest return on investment for upgrades since these are what buyers tend to look at first. Conversely, letting appliances get dated or failing to replace old carpeting can reduce your home’s resale value — or at least make it more difficult to sell in general. Adding popular amenities like energy-efficient upgrades or Smart Home Technology can also boost home values.

2. Number of Bedrooms and Bathrooms As a rule of thumb, more bedrooms and bathrooms equal higher values. If you can add an extra bedroom or bathroom during the time you own a home, you can usually expect a significant boost in price.

The average Atlanta home owner lives in a home for only 14.7 years before selling, and many sell much sooner than that.

3. Property Damage and History If your home has developed a serious problem requiring major work, such as termites or a cracked foundation, these can have a negative effect on your resale value, especially if you leave them unrepaired (since the new owner will have to assume those costs). Likewise, if your home has been subject to natural disas-

ters like flooding or mold, this negative history can weigh on your resale value.

4. “Middle-Aged” Homes New constructions and historic structures both tend to sell well — the former due to space and amenities, the later due to “charm factor” (especially if it’s restored and well maintained).

However, there’s a sort of “soft zone” for homes that are 30-50 years old — homes that have dated appearances or odd layouts that don’t fit well with modern living — that tend to sell for less than their comparable counterparts.

Don’t forget the binoculars!

You may remember that one of my Christmas presents was a set of birdwatching binoculars.

Wife of Mine presented them to me, and I’m starting to put them to use — at least when I don’t STEVE HUDSON forget and leave them Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net on the kitchen table.

Where are my expeditions taking me? Sometimes no farther than the back yard. I’m liking this birdwatching thing. In fact, the patch of woods at the back of our lot is about as convenient as it gets. It used to be grass.

But a while back I decided to do my part for wildlife and let it go natural — you know, creating habitat and all that.

Besides, I told myself, if I let it go natural, I won’t have to worry about cutting all that extra grass. That would mean more time for fishing or birdwatching or whatever else seems more enjoyable than yard work, which is just about everything. See how logical that is? Yes, logic is a wonderful thing.

Close-to-home birdwatching is fun, but there’s always something to be said for “going somewhere,” whether for fishing or hiking or birdwatching or whatever. That may be why, the other day, I found myself planning a rambling excursion somewhere up in the mountains.

“I think I’ll go northwest,” I said, “and see what I can see.”

“You ought to take your binoculars!”

Wife of Mine replied. “There might be birds.”

“Good idea!” I replied, and so I set them on the table so I wouldn’t forget them, unless of course I forgot them, which is exactly what I did.

My day in the mountains was refreshing. Some days it’s nice just to wander, and this was definitely one of those days.

Eventually, about mid-afternoon, I decided to head home. But then there it was — a sign pointing to what is, for me, one of the most irresistible points of interest you’ll find — a dam.

Specifically, the sign pointed the way to the Carter’s Lake Lower Pool Reregulation Dam. That was a new one for me.

Curious, I followed the signs. What I found when I got there was a concrete dam of the classic sort — a massive, gray, vaguely brooding monolith that stretched across the Coosawattee River — and thanks to all the rain we’ve had, the water was roaring through, too.

Standing on the top of the dam (yes, you can walk across it) and leaning on the railing and looking down at the resulting turbulence was mesmerizing in that funny kind of way that gives you goosebumps and makes your knees a little weak and causes your blood pressure to rise. Like a really good roller coaster, it was kind of terrifying but also a heck of a lot of fun.

After a while, I turned to head back to the truck. That’s when I saw the sign.

It was a big ol’ sign, and it read “Hidden Pond Trail Songbird Management Area.”

And there was a trail…

Georgia: Continued from Page 26 spy a trail without wondering where it goes. This one was no exception, and since I had time, I decided to go see.

Songbirds, eh? I knew I should have brought those binoculars with me! Like my fly rod, they’re probably destined to become a regular item in my outdoor adventure bag. On that day, though, all I had was my eyes.

From the parking area, walk past the sign. The trail turns right and crosses a creek, climbs a little hill, and soon takes you to a loop. To your left is a longer bridge which crosses a wetland area; to your right, the trail follows a clearing, then turns left (look for a trail sign) and heads back toward the lake, eventually crossing another bridge over the same creek. Just beyond that bridge, look for a pathway turning left; it follows the edge of the wetlands and eventually enters a cleared area and the far end of the long bridge over the wetland. You can also follow the clearing back to your car.

Make sense? It will when you hike it.

One of the neatest things about the loop portion of this trail is that it takes you to a number of blinds built specifically with bird watching in mind. You’ll find these blinds at several points along the trail. They make it easy to observe the wetlands wildlife — especially if (yeah, yeah) you don’t leave your binoculars on the kitchen table.

But even without fancy optics, I saw birds — lots of birds — big ones, small ones, large flocks and small groups of two or three. Most were songbirds, but I saw a couple of hawks and some wading birds too. I expect there will be many more as the weather warms, and this is now on my list of places to revisit It should offer many opportunities for birdwatching of the first order — especially if I don’t leave the binoculars at home.

The Hidden Pond Trail Songbird Management Area is located at the Carters Lake Reregulation Dam Recreation Area. It is accessed via Highway 136 and Old Highway 411. The trailhead is located near the beginning of the parking area.

Construction overview shows challenges, success in Fulton Schools Rising material costs, shrinking labor force test district’s budget

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com The escalating cost of building new schools and renovating older ones is challenging the Fulton County School System as it tackles more than $230 million in current and planned projects in the coming months.

School officials, however, note efficient scheduling and realistic metrics keep the district on budget and on schedule despite the external challenges.

During a School Board work session in February, district officials outlined recent accomplishments, upcoming summer projects and the challenges and priorities of the five-year Capital Program which ends in 2022.

“The Capital Projects team will execute 49 renovations this summer and four [ongoing] large projects contracted at over $231 million,” said Deputy Superintendent of Operations Patrick Burke. “This is a big year coming up.”

This summer 20 area schools are

slated for projects, including replacement of fire alarms and roofs, upgrades to security systems and general renovations to keep the schools fully functioning.

Last summer, projects were completed at 22 area schools. Those projects included moving Independence High School from Milton Center back to its original Roswell location and other smaller-scale projects, such as new playground equipment and media centers.

“Sometimes we do big, flashy projects that are really cool, and sometimes we do little projects that make all the difference [to students] and what we are most proud of,” said Barbara Colman, program manager for Jacobs Construction which oversees the district’s construction program.

The economic recovery has changed the landscape of construction, with greater demand for services competing with a diminished labor pool, and driving up costs.

Bill McCorkle, vice president with Evergreen Construction, told the board construction costs have been rising 5 to 6 percent since the economy came out of the recession in 2012.

He cited the examples of Johns Creek High School and Cambridge High school, similarly-designed schools built three years apart but at very different costs.

He noted the higher costs today reflect a correction in the industry, with costs returning to where the industry can maintain sustainability.

Margaret Rauber of Atlanta-based Winters Construction also briefed the board on the declining pool of qualified workers and its impact on construction.

“The manpower is absolutely a challenge for us in the region, and all major contractors are reporting staffing challenges,” Rauber said.

She noted the construction industry

has not returned to the staffing levels seen prior to the downturn when many left for other opportunities. Additionally, the average age of the skilled construction worker is in the mid-50s, so many are headed to retirement.

“We are all fighting over a stretched work force with fewer people [to choose] from,” Rauber said.

Fulton School Board member Katha Stuart said the school system recognizes the need for construction skills, pointing to the program in place in the Roswell area. A curriculum in Construction Technology is in place at the elementary school leading all the way to high school to provide a deep understanding of the industry and its opportunities.

Board member Julia Bernath also encouraged the construction companies to offer internships to students to get them interested in the industry.

To help your young students make the most of the online world while staying safe, heed these hints: 1. Share Space: Have a shared family computer in a common space. This lets you supervise your kids’ online time without hovering.

2. Limit Time: The length of an online session should match your child’s natural attention span. School-age kids’ brains can focus for about 30 minutes at a time, so they won’t really get much from sessions longer than that. A good

4. Turn To Technology: Everyone has preferred shows or spaces online and can watch anywhere via tablets and laptops. Cambridge boys soccer charges back to down Milton

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge assistant coach Josh McGlamery typically spends the halftime of each game with magnets and a board outlining the strategy for the Bears in the second half. In Friday night’s contest against Milton, his board and magnets did not make an appearance during the break.

“We didn’t need that tonight,” McGlamery said. “We needed desire and intensity.”

McGlamery and Bears’ head coach Bryan Wallace emphasized the need for their squad to rise to its challenges, show their passion and play with a ferocity they did not have in the first half.

That halftime refocus paid off with the Bears using a notable second half performance to erase Milton’s lead and earn a 2-1 victory.

“Given the emotions of the game with a crosstown rival, given the intensity Milton brought in the first half, combined with the field conditions, it made for a sloppy game at times, but it really came down to a matter of desire,” McGlamery said.

Milton promptly moved the ball from midfield to its attacking third and scored with a well-placed cross from Hunter Dinnall to Dylan Thelin who buried a hard shot of his right foot.

With their newfound vigor entering the second half, Cambridge began

to control possession and put together quality scoring chances.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, the Bears found the scoreboard when a 30-yard free kick taken by Ben Barfield found senior Jack Tindle who headed the ball in for a goal.

Continuing the momentum swing, Cambridge took the lead six minutes later from another set piece. Treyson Reilly headed a Cambridge corner in from close distance, slicing the ball across the goalmouth to give the Bears a 2-1 advantage.

Though the Bears’ strong-suit is not usually set pieces, Wallace said the team focused on them earlier in the week, and it paid off Friday night.

“Our strength is possession and creativity, but we can figure some things out with the athletes we have,” Wallace said. “I think they did a good job of translating what we worked on into some goals.”

The Bears continued to mount offensive pressure the remainder of the half, and though they did not add another goal, possession-oriented play, along with some late Milton turnovers, allowed Cambridge to secure the comeback win.

“We have confidence in our ability to play, I think tonight brings further confidence in our ability to gut it out sometimes,” McGlamery said.

The Bears now turn their attention to region play which begins this week.

Cambridge captured its first region title last season.

Milton (4-2, 2-1) will take on Lambert and North Forsyth this week to continue its Region 5-AAAAAAA slate.

Cambridge girls soccer downs crosstown rivals Milton

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge used strong defensive play and two goals in the first half to earn bragging rights over crosstown foes Milton March 1 at home.

The Bears used their experienced backline and impressive play in the midfield to stymie the injury-riddled Eagles and will head into region play next week with a 4-2 overall record.

“We came off a tough, 1-0 loss (to Sprayberry Feb. 26) where we kind of felt we deserved it,” head coach Jesse Bitting said. “We came into this game — which is a lot bigger considering we’re both Milton teams — wanting to turn it around, and we did that brilliantly.”

Before Cambridge had a chance to flex its defensive muscles, the Bears took an early lead.

Ciardullo in the attacking third. With the ball approaching no-man’s land, Ciardullo lobbed a shot over the head of Milton keeper Alex Bicknell to give Cambridge a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest.

“Ciardullo really keeps things moving and keeps up the momentum,” Bitting said.

Milton senior defender Bianca Norcom had an impressive tackle to clear a Cambridge scoring chance midway through the period, but the Bears found the net five minutes later off a set piece.

Bears’ junior midfielder Molly Booker took a Cambridge corner and bent the ball toward the near post where it deflected off a defender and into the back of the net with 15 minutes left in the first half.

Though Milton had its scoring opportunities in the second half, including a free kick from just outside the corner of the penalty area, they could not find the net and were held to a single shot on goal

by Cambridge’s stout defensive play.

The Bears now turn their attention to region play which begins this week.

Cambridge will look to improve on its 1-7 region record last season, and Bitting said the Bears are confident heading into the 7-AAAAAA slate after downing their rivals.

“We feel good about region play going into it this way,” she said. “I told them tonight to think of this game as a region game, because it kind of is, but it’s also street cred and I think they feel that for sure.”

Bitting said the team’s attitude will be a vital factor in moving forward. ““We decided our main goal was to build a reputation of those who want to compete and to have a good attitude,” Bitting said. “We’ve had that. They walk off each game and build each other up.

Milton (5-3, 2-1) will look to shake off the loss and improve their region standing with contests against Lambert (6-0) and North Forsyth (1-3-1) this week.

Blessed Trinity swimmer finds stride in water

Blessed Trinity senior Dillon Downing won state titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle events at the Feb. 9 GHSA Swim and Dive State Championships. Downing began swimming full time just two years ago and is committed to the UGA swim program.

ROSWELL, Ga. — With more than 40 state team championship banners hanging in its gym, Blessed Trinity has proven to be one of Georgia’s top athletic programs over the past 20 years. But it was not until senior Dillon Downing stood atop the podium twice at the GHSA Swim and Dive State Championships Feb. 9 that the school captured its first boys swimming individual state title.

Downing raced his way to the title in 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle and set the fastest times of all classifications in both events. His time of 19.73 seconds in the 50-yard event was just 0.1 second behind the state record and was the 38th-quickest time nationally for high school swimmers, according to USA Swimming.

Even more impressive, Downing has only been swimming full time for two years.

Downing swam during elementary school but said he did not enjoy it and quit. While running cross country with the Titans his freshman year, he decided to give swimming another try that winter.

“Dillon was a very good swimmer his freshman year, but in his sophomore year, he had some tremendous time drops and placed fourth at the state meet in the 50-free and sixth in the 100free,” BT swim coach Chuck Oliver said.

“He beat many swimmers who are training year round and were getting looks from colleges. To be swimming the times he was while only committed to swimming for a few months out of the year showed me how much upside potential he probably had.”

Oliver suggested a year-round regimen, and Downing took the dive, splitting his time with coach Andy Griffin at Swim Atlanta and Oliver with BT. “I was definitely weaker than I wanted to be going from cross-country, but the endurance aspect helped a lot,” Downing said. “I was able to put in laps and not feel so drained. And since, my start and

turns have gotten much better.”

While his cross country days saw Downing competing over long distances, he was drawn to the sprint races of the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events.

“I like how fast it is,” he said. “It focuses on strength. The other strokes require a lot of technique, and freestyle does as well, but it’s a lot of strength.”

The senior said he was surprised at how well he did at the 2019 state meet and was thankful for his coaches, Oliver and Griffin.

“They both said they love working with me and watching me progress,” Downing said. “Obviously the work they put in to help me get better paid off.”

Downing not only caught the eyes of his coaches and competitors, he impressed college recruiters. The new state champion accepted a scholarship offer from UGA where he will continue his swim and academic career.

“Honestly, the whole process was a surprise for me since I only recently started to swim,” Downing said. “I didn’t expect to be recruited.”

Downing said he is excited for the opportunity to join the Bulldogs and believes he will be able to contribute to the sprint program as a freshman.

Downing has set high goals for himself at UGA, where he aims to set the school record in the 50-yard freestyle and earn a spot in the NCAA finals.

“I’m still fairly new, and I want to see how far I can go,” he said.

Commercial interests at North Point have taken a hit in recent years with the closures of giant retailers Sears and Toys R Us. Strip malls in the area are also seeing strain, according to a study

by Kimley Horn consultants, which assisted the city in drawing up a Livable Centers Initiative plan in 2018.

Kathryn Zickert, attorney for Brookfield, said that long before Avalon and City Center, North Point Mall was the economic driver for the city. Over its 26 years of operation, the mall has accounted for tens of millions of dollars in taxes and remains the city’s biggest property tax component, she said.

Brookfield’s letter of intent states that the luxury apartments will occupy three 4-story buildings and will include a swimming pool, courtyards, fitness center, business center, dog wash,

clubroom, garages, leasing office and pet park.

In addition to the multi-use trail, outdoor amenities include a rock climbing wall, Spanish Steps, athletic fields, parks, overlooks, playground, event lawn/space, bocce garden and splash pad.

Mayor Jim Gilvin said the project is just what North Point needs. He said he was on the City Council when Avalon was cleared for construction more than six years ago, and everyone was concerned with the effect it would have on North Point.

[We] knew that we were going to have to be proactive in watching that corridor,” Gilvin said, adding that the city’s planning staff has been working for years to come up with a plan tailored for the area.

“Our staff has worked… to come up with a plan that would give us something in that area that was going to convert the North Point corridor into something special, because we don’t just want another development in Alpharetta,” he said. “We consider this a community that deserves better.”

Homestead exemption deadline set for April 1 NORTH FULTON, Ga. —The deadline to file for homestead exemption is April 1. Anyone who purchased a new home in 2018 or made changes to their deed may qualify for a special exemption when applying. In November of 2018, several new homestead exemptions were approved by voters and most exemptions will apply automatically to existing homeowners.

There is a new exemption for senior residents who are above 65. This exemption increases the basic homestead exemption from $30,000 to $50,000 for the Fulton County portion of property taxes and does not have income restrictions.

The exemption will be automatically applied to any property owners who already have a senior homestead exemption in place. Any property owner who does not currently have a senior exemption is encouraged to apply. All seniors are encouraged to reach out to the Tax Assessors Office for assistance in identifying the exemption most beneficial to their

situation. To qualify for any exemption, you must own and occupy the property as your primary residence as of Jan. 1, and be a permanent legal resident of Fulton County. You also are required to present a valid Georgia photo identification and provide a current copy of your Fulton County vehicle registration.
