Summer begins with the opening of the city green MILTON, Ga. — The Village, also known as The Green, officially opened June 9 to the public with the first event of many.

The privately funded park was recently completed and celebrated with a grand opening complete with bagpipes, a color guard, retail merchants, food vendors, live music and games.

Bob Meyers emceed the event and spoke on how the park

will serve as a common gathering place for events as well as just sitting on a bench and enjoying the beauty of the park.

The Village is located in front of Milton City Hall, 2006 Heritage Walk, just one block off of Crabapple Road.

The Village will host of several future events including local farmers markets, Yoga on The Green, movies on the lawn, concerts, dog shows and more.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Two people were sent to intensive care June 12 with second and third degree burns after a house on Pine Grove Pointe Drive exploded.

The Roswell Fire Department responded at 8:45 p.m. that night to an explosion that leveled the house.

Three men, all in their 20s, had moved into the house just three days prior. The house exploded after one of the men lit a candle to freshen a musty odor coming from their recently obtained washer and dryer, according to media reports.

The fire department is still working to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

One of the men had minimal injuries as he was on the other side of the house when the incident occurred, but the

Man arrested in attempt to return ‘borrowed’ items MILTON, Ga. — A man was arrested June 6 for allegedly attempting to fraudulently return items at the Milton Walmart and was later found to be in possession of heroin.

Walmart employees contacted police after the man retrieved items from the store’s shelves and then attempted to return them using a receipt from a different Walmart location. Employees said the man had fraudulently returned items at the same store on May 31.

Officers arrived at the location and attempted to handcuff the man but he pulled away from officers and attempted to flee. After pushing the man against the counter, officers apprehended the suspect.

When searching the man, officers discovered less than one gram of heroin on his person.

The suspect was arrested for theft by deception (misdemeanor), obstruction, possession of heroin and possession of drug-related objects.

A GoFundMe page has identified the victims as Win Reid, Brendan Morton and Pat Sammons. Morton and Simmons, according to the page, have burns on “over half of their bodies.”

“Everything all three boys owned is now lost or under significant rubble from the explosion,” said Emma-Rae Pinson, who started the page. “Any donation is helpful to help the boys buy new clothes, shoes, and basic living supplies.”

As of press time, the GoFundMe has raised $21,000, more than its original goal of $3,000. Donations can be sent at gofundme.com/fund-for-brendan-pat-and-win.

Glass frames worth $17,000 stolen in store burglary JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A store owner reported June 4 that her business had been burglarized and dozens of glass frames were missing.

Police met at Bender Eye Care on Haynes Bridge Road at 7 a.m. with the owner. She said that she had locked the business at 1 p.m. the previous day, but when she came back that morning, she saw that someone had entered the store.

Several glasses’ frames were missing and the cash drawer was open. About $250 in cash was missing from the drawer.

When she went into her office, the owner saw that someone was able to unlock the office door and go through the file cabinet and her desk. Nothing was missing from the office, however.

The owner valued the missing frames at $17,000 total.

There was no security alarm in the business and although it did have security cameras, the owner said that they were turned off.

Thieves steal truck from owner’s parking lot ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A man called police June 6 after his truck was stolen while he was gone at work.

The man told police that he left his house on Elite Lane at 10 p.m. to go to work. He left his 2007 Lincoln Mark LT truck in the parking lot.

When he returned at 3 a.m., the truck was gone.

The man told police that he does not drive the truck on a regular basis and that he leaves it unlocked in the parking lot with the key in the center console.

The truck is valued at $18,000.

Bottle thrown from car shatters driver’s windshield FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The windshield of a 2010 Honda CR-V was shattered after someone threw an unknown object out of a nearby car.

The driver said he was driving along Jot Em Down Road near Bent Tree Trail when a passing motorist threw an object from their driver side window toward his car. He was unable to get a tag number or good description of the car, but he could tell it was a white sedan.

The windshield had extensive damage. A deputy saw a wet substance on the area of impact and smelled alcohol.

The object was unable to be located on the side of the road, but the deputy suspected it was a beer can/bottle judging by the smell.

The approximate cost of the repairs is $330 to replace the windshield.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of multifocal intraocular lenses for patients having cataract surgery?

By Cameron Johnson, MD A cataract is caused by the clouding of the natural human lens. When the cloudy lens is removed with surgery, a new artificial lens is placed in the eye to focus images properly.

When considering cataract surgery, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits of the surgery with your eye doctor. With advancements in artificial lens technology over the last decade, discussing the type of new lens to be placed in the Cameron Johnson, M.D. eye has become very important as well.

Laser Cataract, Corneal, Refractive, and MIGS Surgeon

When a person reaches their 40’s, they begin to note that they are no longer able to see up close without glasses. While patients often have much decreased need for glasses for distance vision after cataract surgery, with a standard lens they will still need reading glasses for near vision.

Fortunately, patients now have additional lens options. One of these options is called a multifocal lens. This type of lens corrects both near and distance vision.

One survey found that 4 out of 5 patients with this type of lens reported never wearing glasses. Many patients find that these lenses add greatly to their quality of life and enjoy the convenience of not having to keep up with reading glasses.

However, these lenses are not for all patients. In order for these lenses to work well, patients must have relatively healthy eyes. Those with severe dry eye, macular degeneration, or advanced glaucoma are not good candidates. A patient also must not have much astigmatism in order for these lenses to work well. Patients with larger amounts of astigmatism would likely benefit more from an astigmatism correcting intraocular lens.

Patient personality plays a role as well. While multifocal lenses are very good, they are not capable to giving patients the vision they had when they were 20 years old. Like all technologies they have limitations. Patients often note haloes around lights and can have glare issues, especially at night. However these symptoms are less noticeable with time. In one study, 6 months after surgery, only about 6 percent of patients described these problems as severe. Reading with these lenses requires adequate lighting, so patients may still need reading glasses in a dimly lit restaurant. There may be some decreased sharpness as compared to standard lenses, especially at night and in rainy or foggy conditions. This means that patients who know themselves to be perfectionists wanting the clearest possible vision at every distance, may do better with a standard lens and reading glasses. Finally, these lenses are considered to be similar to LASIK or cosmetic surgery by insurance companies. Therefore they are not covered by insurance and require an additional fee. However, even given these limitations, 93% of patients receiving one popular type of multifocal lens say they would choose to have a multifocal lens again.

Milton officials question impact of new homestead tax law

By CARSON COOK carson@northfulton.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton officials say a countywide referendum that would cap increases in homestead property appraisals could penalize owners of large parcels, including horse farms.

At a June 11 work meeting, Milton City Council members said, if passed by voters this November, provisions in the new law would cap homestead property valuations at an annual increase of 3 percent or the Consumer Price Index inflation rate, whichever is lowest. But that protection would not apply to properties greater than 5 acres.

“I think the goal of this legislation is not to, ultimately, give a greater tax break than was previous, but it is an attempt to slow down the rate of increase in property tax increases,” said Sam VanVolkenburgh with the City Attorney’s Office.

City Councilwoman Laura Bentley acknowledged that the legislation would help the majority of homeowners, but

she is worried about how it would affect owners of large parcels of land, including equestrian operations.

By definition, a homestead must be the property owner’s primary residence and be no more than 5 contiguous acres of land. Property owners of more than 5 acres would not have the same cap on their property valuations.

“I’m very concerned about this because what makes Milton so unique is our raw land and green spaces, so I definitely see this impacting our character and our heritage,” Bentley said.

She called for more research on how many large parcel owners would be affected by the legislation.

Mayor Joe Lockwood also voiced concern for large lot owners and how they affect the character of the city.

“I would agree that it certainly does negatively impact a lot of the work we’re trying to do to incentivize large lot owners to keep the land versus selling it or developing it,” Lockwood said. “The majority of the people it helps, but on the flip side, that small minority of people

The mayor said he supported Bentley’s suggestion to conduct more research.

Changes to Fulton County homestead appraisals were sparked last year when public outcry raged over updated 2017 property valuations.

Thousands of North Fulton residents had sticker shock when they saw property appraisals had raised their home values by more than half. Property values affect what homeowners pay in taxes to the county, school system and city government. Overall, 61 percent of homeowners saw their assessments increase by more than 13 percent.

In response, Fulton County commissioners threw out the new assessments and used the property values set in 2016, but this was only a temporary solution.

The state Legislature proposed the cap on homestead property valuations to try to prevent incidents like 2017 from occurring again.

The legislation must be approved by a referendum at the November 6 election. If the referendum passes, the new policy would affect tax assessments beginning in 2019.

Hands-free driving law: Don’t touch that phone

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Motorists are bracing themselves for one of the biggest changes to the state’s driving laws since texting and driving was banned in 2010.

Starting July 1, the new “hands-free” law effectively prohibits drivers from using cell phones or other electronic devices while driving. But there have been a few misconceptions floating around regarding what exactly motorists can or cannot do while driving.

Local law enforcement has weighed

in to clarify these changes.

Motorists will still be able to have and to some extent use a phone in their vehicle, but they cannot physically hold or support any “wireless telecommunications device” with any part of their body. Such devices include cell phones, personal digital assistants, stand-alone computers GPS receivers or any similar portable wireless device used to send or receive communications.

Earpieces, headphones and smart watches are exceptions.

amateur radio devices or in-vehicle security, navigation and remote diagnostics systems.

Georgians will still be able to use GPS and make hands-free phone calls.

And, to an extent, people will be able to stream music using these devices as long as they do not touch them while operating a vehicle.

“The best way to explain it is that if the vehicle is not legally parked in a space, a person cannot touch their phone, iPad, etc. unless they are reporting an emergency,” said Alpharetta Police Department spokesman Howard Miller. “Everything will have to be voice activated.”

Drivers will not be able to send, write or read any texts, with the exception of navigation and voice-based communication that is automatically converted to written message.

While these restraints sound similar to the previous distracted driving law, this one is easier to enforce, said Milton Police Department spokesman Capt.

Charles Barstow. “[Previously], just having the phone in your hand did not necessarily qualify as a violation of law, and proving that a person was texting and driving was difficult to do,” Barstow said. “The revamped law does a good job of eliminating the ambiguity associated with the previous law and makes it clear that you cannot physically hold or support a wireless

telecommunications device or standalone computer with any part of your body while you are driving.”

Along with the restriction on texting, drivers also cannot under the new law watch any videos, aside from navigation, or record any videos.

Continuous recording or broadcasting through dash cams is allowed.

Beats the Streets focuses on helping those hidden

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — If “it takes a village to raise a child,” those without traditional support systems can face a real challenge.

For homeless individuals who lack a community of support, finding a path to success can be all but impossible.

That’s where local faith-based nonprofit Beats the Streets comes in. The group provides emotional, mental, spiritual and career development resources to help homeless men and women in North Fulton. These individuals are given the chance to transform their lives through a self-sustainable plan for the future.

CEO Quincy Jones said the organization reaches out to those in need in the community through their faith.

“Human beings are the greatest gift on the planet,” Jones said. “No matter who you are, what you’re doing, your vocation, where you come from or your age, I believe the value you get from sharing with an individual is irreplaceable. Whether it is faith-based or not, it’s undeniable the energy shared between individuals and the value of a life is huge.”

After someone is accepted, given clothing and other essentials, the greatest value a homeless person gets from that exchange is being able to understand when the giver looked at them, they saw someone who is equally as valuable as they are, he said.

“When you’re homeless, you’re seen as lesser than a house pet,” Jones said.

“They may be shy, but once they realize someone wants to connect with them, they light up. They realize the person sees them. There is nothing that can replace that. Who knows what can be done when someone takes that and can empower someone else? We all have things going on, but the results of a ripple effect of just being kind can go so far.”

The group gets that message out by partnering with local churches, including Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church.

Earlier this month, the two organizations hosted a cookout for area homeless, offering a day of food, fun and fellowship.

“It was a time to offer community,” Jones said. “When you’re working with the homeless and people in critical need, it’s good to serve and give things. But, just like any human, it can be hard to find a community. The main thing about this event was getting a bunch of people together. We also offered clothing, gifts and business clothes for those who need

Since 2015, Beats the Streets has focused on that mission to bring community to the streets. Over time, the nonprofit has assisted some 300 people.

They provide job training, placement and assist with housing. Jones said they work with the homeless population to connect them with jobs. The group will pay for housing for a month or so while the person begins their job. Then, once more stable, the person will reimburse Beats the Streets and continue working toward self-sufficiency, he said.

Along with it, they try to get the community involved by asking for donations for clothing, food and children’s toys.

But, the main focus is meeting the homeless community.

“In downtown Atlanta, homeless people are everywhere,” Jones said. “But in North Fulton, there are hundreds of homeless people. They’re hard to find.

You have to locate them. They’re living in trees and behind restaurants. We make it a point to go and find them.”

Beats the Streets visits locations popular among the homeless, chats up the regulars and welcomes newcomers into the community.

The area around the Walmart off Windward Parkway is one hotspot for the homeless, and Jones said they have seen people living among the surround-

ing trees. The organization distributes “Bags of Hope,” packages filled with various items including socks, ChapStick and toiletries.

Distributing the bags helps the organization choose one or two “ambassadors” to pass the word along that there is a group willing to help them.

“The number fluctuates because when you’re talking about school kids, a lot of them are couch surfing,” Jones said. “Maybe their parents got divorced and they want to hop around, not necessarily by choice. When you take into account the high school kids, there’s a lot going on around here.”

Jones would not call the homeless situation an epidemic, but it’s more prevalent than expected. Often, the high schoolers Beats the Streets work with will be displaced temporarily, but it can lead to a long-term situation.

“A lot of times, we’ll see kids who start on a friend’s couch and then another friend’s couch,” Jones said. “Once that goes on for so long … it easily turns to maybe a discomfort with the situation or the parent wants to tell the other parent the kid is estranged. So you wind

up with a good amount of kids, unfortunately, spending the night at a park or outside. It’s tricky how it unfolds for a high schooler. But, it is happening. It’s more than you think.”

In addition to the school-aged population, Jones said they work with a lot of single men over the age of 30.

“When you think about shelters, homes or places that offer assistance, they’re going to single women and mothers of children first,” he said. “That makes sense. But, there isn’t a lot for a male … We see a lot of males in this area because out here there isn’t really anywhere for them to go.”

Jones said he’s often met with shock when describing the plight of the homeless to other community groups.

“They say, ‘is it really that bad?’”

Jones said. “Thankfully, the Alpharetta Police Department is great. We work directly with them. A lot of times they will reach out to us and let us know that

One of the biggest problems, he said, is actually finding this hidden population.

“Out here, it’s hard to find,” he said.

“We’ll have people come and serve with us who said they have no idea that there was a homeless population out here. It’s right under your nose.”

One telltale sign would be those walking down the street with large backpacks.

“The good thing is, when people become aware, they’re so taken aback they want to help immediately,” Jones said. “They will jump into action. We see people not wanting to look at it, but more often than not, they don’t want it to happen anywhere. So once they see it, they say, ‘we have to do something.’”

My wife, Kimber, and I decided to take our honeymoon a year and a half after we said “I do.” We figured it was better late than never.

Instead of spending our time by the pool at a resort, we decided to take a trip to see parts of the country neither of us

had been to.

We flew into Las Vegas and rented a camper van. From there, we went to the Grand Canyon on our way to Bryce Canyon via Page, Arizona. and then finally Zion National Park before returning to Vegas.

For most of the drive, we were without cell service. Being without Facebook and the internet for a four-hour drive at first seemed unbearable. But then, we started looking at the landscape around us.

The drive was picturesque, with wide open spaces lined by mountains in the distance. The landscape was different than what we usually see in Georgia.

The pine trees and vegetation were swapped for desert and mountains.

We arrived at the park during the golden hour, that time before the sun sets. As we drove to our campground, we were delighted to see elk and deer grazing near the road. We would later find this a normal occurrence as the park was full of animals that paid little attention to the people around them (unless they wanted your food.)

We found our campground and then headed to the visitor center which promised to have amazing views of the sunset.

The canyon itself is set back from the visitor center, about a five minute walk.

As we walked the path to the canyon we were passed by people running, presumably to get a better spot to view the sunset.

Neither Kimber nor I had ever been to the Grand Canyon. And when we finally made it to the observation point, it didn’t disappoint.

Any direction you looked, all you

could see was the vast expansion of the 6 million-year-old canyon. Hues of red and gray rock were sprinkled with green from pine trees. It was like looking at a painting, it almost didn’t seem real.

Almost every square inch of the special observation points were filled with people and their phones trying to get that perfect picture. Some people seemed to only view the canyon through their phones.

Kimber and I found a spot along the rim to stop and watch the sunset. We sat, took a few pictures and headed back to our campsite.

Soon the sun had completely set, and it was so dark that you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face.

Kimber was enamored by the number of stars that could be seen, far more stars than are viewable in the suburbs of Atlanta. We spent time picking out constellations. Well, the only two we knew were the Big and Little Dippers, but I was also able to make up a few.

At home, we weren’t able to truly appreciate the night sky. But even if we could see as many stars as at the Grand Canyon, would we?

At home we are inundated with text messages, emails and social media. We spend so much time looking down at our phones that we don’t think to take the time to look up.

I know I find myself getting home after work and spending the subsequent hour scrolling through my social feeds but not really interacting with anyone or anything.

What’s the point?

We even saw people at the Grand Canyon, and me at times, staring into a phone looking for that perfect picture to post later instead of being in the moment and taking in the beauty of what was in front of us.

It’s easy to get engrained in our dayto-day and not take time to look around and admire the world around us.

In the middle of writing this column, we stopped at Horseshoe Bend in Page.

And the sentiment of being in the moment could not be any truer, as every other person herds you out of the way to get the perfect picture.

Free Press Express Paint Rock, Alabama, a city in northeast Alabama has a population of 210. By comparison, I think there are 210 people in my neighborhood here in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Like a lot of small HANS APPEN towns across the General Manager hans@appenmediagroup.com country, Paint Rock doesn’t have a city website and doesn’t have an attorney on staff. It’s apparent that it doesn’t often consult with one, either.

All city council meetings maintain a certain set of rules – start time, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, roll call, etc.

However, last week, Mayor Brenda Frisk and the Paint Rock City Council passed a new set of rules for its council meetings.

They are: 1. Anyone not residing in the town limits, or anyone not owning property within the town limits, will not be permitted without prior approval of the council.

2. Members of the media, i.e.: newspaper, television, radio, etc., will not be allowed without prior approval from the council majority. When asking for approval, you must present a valid reason/justification for the media to attend.

3. Recording of any meeting of the town council is not permitted.

4. Posting of any town minutes, email to council members, financial statements, etc., to ANY unauthorized media source is strictly forbidden.

The Society of Professional Journalists put out a newsletter informing its members that they aware of the case, and that they had reached out to Frank LoMonte, a media attorney and director of the Brechner Center for Freedom of Information at the University of Florida, for his take.

He said that not only would these new rules be in clear violation of Alabama state law, but that they would also be a clear infringement on the U.S. Constitution.

The local paper for Paint Rock is the Jackson County Sentinel. Its editor and publisher, Brandon Cox, wrote a scathing op-ed that went into great detail the many different ways these new guidelines directly contradict open meetings laws for elected officials.

Like many papers serving rural America that are struggling to sustain subscribers and generate ad revenue, there is probably not much else they can do, without help. They almost certainly don’t have the funds to support a long,

At the company I work for, we have our challenges, but if we got a call from an advertiser asking us to back down from an open meetings argument with a mayor we’d tell them to jump in a lake.

Here is a direct quote from Michael Koretzky, a member of the SPJ board of directors: “Paint Rock is just the latest example of an old problem: The worst censorship happens in towns so small, no one gives a damn. That’s even more true today, with everyone keeping score in Trumpvs.-the-national-media. Ever hear the expression, “All politics are local?” Most journalism is, too.”

So, here’s why I care about Paint Rock, Alabama: journalism in America is under assault.

It’s frightening to me that such a large faction of our country seems to cheer it on.

What do you think happens when power goes unchecked in a free society?

Society becomes less free. The rule of law is carried out at the discretion of the person who can convince the most people that they don’t need to know, and shouldn’t care, what happens behind government’s closed doors.

When the Jackson County Sentinel is barred from covering a city council meeting in Paint Rock, Alabama and we as an open and questioning society stand by and do nothing, we give others permission to do the same.

So if these rules are not reconciled quickly, then I plan to join hundreds of journalists in northeast Alabama in early July to attend, and cover, the next Plains Rock City Council meeting...or be arrested trying.

Because I know that if we let it happen there, then it could happen here.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — City officials hope to end a traffic nightmare created last month when Mayfield Road was closed for a major culvert replacement project.

The City Council unanimously approved an incentive package June 11 to hasten completion of the project by as early as July 14. That’s 12 days earlier than originally planned.

Public Works Director Pete Sewczwicz said the city has been working with contractors for the project, The Dickerson Group, trying to work out ways to complete the project ahead of schedule.

“What it came down to was hours in the day,” Sewczwicz said. “So, we’re looking at extending the time from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.”

The extra four hours of work time six days a week, he said, will give the contractor the ability to fast track the project for early completion. There will be no work allowed on Sundays.

One hitch to the plan is the city’s noise ordinance, which does not permit heavy machinery operation before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

The city will pay Dickerson an additional $9,000 a day for a maximum of 12 days – or $108,000 – for the extra workday hours. Alpharetta officials said the city generally would not permit 12-hour workdays on projects so close to residential neighborhoods, but residents in the area expressed support for the idea.

Mayfield Road is a heavily traveled route running from Alpharetta’s Main Street west to Milton. The culvert replacement work has the street closed to traffic from Canton Street to Bethany Road.

The city is also underway with an $18 million bridge replacement project that has Rucker Road, another major east-west artery, shut down through the summer until early August.

The Mayfield Road culvert project was originally awarded for $824,000.

With the incentive package, the maximum project cost would be $947,000.

That figure includes $15,000 of overtime work already completed June 5-11.

Councilman Donald Mitchell said he’s heard plenty about the traffic problems generated by the Mayfield Road closure, and he endorsed the plan to speed up work.

“I think it’s extremely necessary,” he said. “It’s money that none of us want to have to spend, but we’ve got to expedite this project.”

Milton installs emergency siren MILTON, Ga. — The City the Milton has recently installed a new tornado siren adjacent to Birmingham Falls Elementary School.

The new location will help ensure the health and safety of nearby homeowners and schoolchildren, city staff said.

Currently, the city has a system of 10 sirens. However, there is a gap in the central area of Ga. 372 that was identified by city staff during the original design-build analysis for the Milton system.

The installation of the eleventh siren will assist with addressing the final gap.

Current plans call for the siren to be installed July 2018 at the high point of the property just northeast of the trail. The siren will be installed on an approximately 40-foot pole and coated black to match the city’s streetlamp specifications.

This location was selected primarily based on balancing out coverage throughout the rest of the city, along with other considerations such as access to power, avoidance of underground utilities (gas and water), topography, tree canopy, and property availability and easements.

The installation process for a new siren necessitates active testing of the siren to ensure the equipment is working properly prior to the contractor completing the installation.

Prior to installation, the city will confirm the date and provide advance notice of the active testing via an official city email and on the City’s website, cityofmiltonga. us.

Appen sweeps awards in multiple contests ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Appen Media Group recently took home an array of awards from competitions over the past few months.

Most recently, Appen won 20 awards from the Georgia Press Association.

The group was honored earlier this month at the annual conference at Jekyll Island Club for their part in the Georgia Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

Entries were judged in seven divisions based on circulation. Appen competed in the division which includes all weekly papers of more than 15,000 circulation.

In all, 73 newspapers won a total of 606 awards presented in 41 categories.

Judging was by members of the Kansas and Oklahoma press associations in February and March.

“For Black Box investigations to win the Open Government Award just a year after we launched the project says a lot about the quality of our staff and, frankly, the importance of what we’re trying to do,” Appen said. “We’ve barely scratched the surface on the full potential of what Black Box can do to connect citizens with their elected officials. We’re honored.”

Parker took home a handful of awards earlier this month at the Georgia Sportswriter Association contest.

School board split on FY19 budget Debate over reserve funds, school safety divides board

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Dissension over pumping up the rainy day fund or enhancing safety and security led to a rare split vote on the Fulton County Board of Education, which approved a tentative $1.1 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2019.

North Fulton board members Katie Reeves (Alpharetta, Milton) and board vice president Linda McCain (Johns Creek) cast the two “no” votes on the tentative budget during the June 12 meeting.

The budget will be up for final approval on June 28 and will go into effect on July 1.

“I just don’t want to have a fund balance until we do everything we can to ensure our kids are safe in the classrooms,” said McCain, who had requested the budget include at least a security staff member in elementary schools. “I know we are putting aside money for next year anticipating [a possible drop in revenue], but we do have a very healthy fund balance.”

The system will end FY18 with nearly

$187 million in reserve funds. That fund is projected to grow to $196 million by June 2019 through a $9 million transfer into reserves.

McCain asked for those funds to be used instead for safety and security measures where needed.

During the board’s work session on June 12, Fulton School officials acknowledged revenue figures for FY19 remain murky, because the Fulton County Tax Commission has yet to release an approved tax digest. Until then, only estimates of tax revenues can be used for the budget.

The FY19 budget is built upon a projected 3.6 percent increases in revenues from the current year.

Robert Morales, chief financial officer for Fulton Schools, said he believes tax revenues will come in higher because of higher property assessments.

The decision on whether the millage rate will increase, stay the same or roll back will be made once the tax digest is received, he noted.

Reeves said tax bills have been received by homeowners and “shock has set in” over the higher assessments.

“I’m very disappointed to see over $9 million set aside [in reserves funds].

That is tough to bear when I know Fulton County residents would rather have that money in their accounts rather than in our bank accounts...saving for next year,” Reeves said.

She noted Fulton Schools already has a policy in place setting aside $52 million to weather any variations in revenue stream, in addition to other accounts for emergencies.

“Setting aside additional money in a time when I am sure we have many taxpayers struggling to make sure they are not going to be taxed out of their homes is a tough one,” Reeves said.

She also questioned plans to hire additional staff, including 10 systemwide social workers, while 54 local level positions are being eliminated because of declining enrollment.

“In this environment of school staff reduction we are adding positions in a number of areas. That to me is not responsible or what our constituents are looking for,” Reeves said.

She noted while “emotional wellbeing is important, so is safety and security,” and what parents are asking for in their schools.

Board member Julia Bernath (Sandy Springs, Roswell) said she does not disagree that more needs to be done to ensure school safety, but she noted a budget has to be passed and amendments can be made as more information comes in.

Traditional hymns ring out at Alpharetta’s oldest tradition

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The 150th annual June Singing recital filled the rotunda of Alpharetta City Hall June 10 with the boisterous choral music of the Sacred Harp singers.

June Singing has been held the second Sunday of June since 1869, making it the longest continuously running event in the city of Alpharetta. Every year, singers gather from across the state to continue the tradition of Sacred Harp-style singing.

Sacred Harp singing, also known as shape note singing, is an acapella style of hymn singing developed in New England in the 18th century, but it has lived on mostly in the American South. The name Sacred Harp refers to a song book published in 1844 by Georgia residents Benjamin Franklin White and Elisha J. King.

In the sheet music, the note heads have four distinct shapes to aid sight reading, hence the term shape note.

The Atlanta Sacred Harp Singers is an informal network of people committed to carrying this style. For many participants, this tradition has been in their family for generations. Wherever the singers gather, they can expect a welcoming community, a potluck meal and hours of singing.

Faye Hollbrook of Alpharetta knows what makes Sacred Heart singing so special to the people who keep coming back.

“It’s the tradition and love of the mu-

sic, it’s been handed down generation to generation,” Hollbrook said.

Another unique feature of Sacred Harp singing is the four-part harmonies, with singers arranged in a square according to their vocal parts.

In this arrangement, there is no space reserved for an audience, though newcomers are encouraged to try standing in the middle of the square where all parts can be heard equally. The style is based on a philosophy of singing for enjoyment, not for performance.

Singers of all ages and experience levels take turns standing in the middle, leading the performers. They set the tempo of the song by raising and lowering their arms in rhythm.

Zachary Silva is 11-years-old and has been participating with the Sacred Harp singers for four years. He attended the June Singing along with his mother and siblings and proudly volunteered to lead a song.

“Coming together, singing together and meeting new people” are what draws him to being a part of the Sacred Harp singers, he said.

Even more than the music, the love of the supportive community was something shared by singers of all ages.

John Plunkett has been singing with the group for more than 25 years.

“I grew up singing in choir, so I like the music and the community aspect as well,” he said.

MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council has approved a preconstruction contract to build a new fire station and police administrative building on Ga. 9 near Cambridge High School.

Cost for the facility is estimated at about $14.8 million and would be funded through revenue bonds.

The council voted at its June 4 meeting to approve an agreement with New South Construction Company LLC, the company responsible for the new City Hall. A preconstruction services contract allows New South to provide construction and cost input early in the design process to help develop the most costeffective designs, said Assistant City Manager Carter Lucas.

The lot will eventually include a new facility for the Fire Department and a building for the Police Department and Municipal Court. Police and court offices are currently located at 13000 Deerfield Parkway, the old City Hall complex. The lease on the current location is set to expire Sept. 30, 2020.

Furthermore, Milton police evidence storage is currently located in Alpharetta for a $60,000 annual lease, and the Milton Fire Department houses its ladder truck at an Alpharetta station. Evidence storage and the ladder truck could move to the new facilities once they are complete.

“The Fire Department serves this area out of a shared facility with the City of Alpharetta. The new station will bring those units back into the City of Milton in an area where a large portion of the city’s population is located,” Lucas said.

The city purchased the land in 2011 in conjunction with the construction of Cambridge High School. The location would service a significant part of the

Ga. 400 bike ride celebrates 10th anniversary

By CONNER EVANS interns@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — More than 1,500 bikers will start their path at 7 a.m. July 8 at a blocked off section of Ga. 400 for the 10th annual Ga. 400 Hospitality Highway Century Ride.

The ride was first allowed by the Georgia Department of Transportation in 2008 when city councils from Sandy Springs and Roswell thought of the idea on a lark.

“People started joking about having a ride on 400,” said Century Ride organizer Eric Broadwell. “But I had already been investigating routes for an actual bike race that would include 400.”

Broadwell has been in charge of the event since its inception and is an avid biker himself, having participated in more than 100 races.

“I do it because I want to get out the exposure of the safety and just provide a wonderful day of cycling that people enjoy,” Broadwell said.

All levels of bikers are welcome at the ride, which includes five different length paths at 9, 27, 45, 60 and 100 miles, with 60 miles being the most popular.

Biking has become one of Roswell’s biggest hobbies over the years.

Broadwell said that the number of bike shops per capita in North Fulton is one of the highest in the nation and a more diverse crowd continues to show up at the Ga. 400 event.

“Back in the ‘80s, running a 5K or 10K was the big thing,” Broadwell said.

“Those same people don’t have the same joint capability, but if you get on a bike

you can see things and you can go further and it’s actually a lot of fun.”

For the 10th anniversary there will be some new aspects to the post-ride celebration. Local music groups will perform from 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and for the first time, Century Ride is partnering with Roswell’s From the Earth Brewing Co., to serve beer after riders cross the finish line.

Proceeds from the ride will go to local bike-related charities, including Bike Roswell and Bike Alpharetta and high school boosters that sponsor the event.

“We call it the ‘Mother-in-law,” Broadwell said, “because you see it at the beginning and you see it at the end, and it just never goes away.”

Early registration is $55 if signed up before June 30. The fee climbs to $60 after June 30 and $75 to sign up the day of the ride.

5 North Atlanta restaurants named on ‘100 Plates Locals Love’

Five local restaurants in North Fulton and South Forsyth were recently named on this year’s “100 Plates Locals Love,” an annual culinary guide of the best local dishes selected by tasters statewide.

The list is published annually in the Georgia Eats guide released by the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Tourism Division.

This year, the plates included pappardelle from Colletta Italian Food & Wine in Alpharetta, BLT sliders from Tam’s Tupelo in Cumming, “Meatball Al Sugo” from Sugo Kitchen in Johns Creek, and “RC’s Chargrilled Oysters” from Hugo’s Oyster Bar in Roswell.

Additionally, the fried chicken from Table & Main in Roswell was named on “Chef Holly’s Top 10” list. The list was cultivated by Holly Chute, executive chef at the Georgia Departments of Agriculture and Economic Development.

The tourism department highlights the best cuisine throughout the state each year. The guide, created four years ago, is intended to encourage visitors to travel to all corners of Georgia and sample the flavors of the South.

The recommendations are for all regions of the state, including the coast, “Historic Heartland,” “Magnolia Midlands,” Georgia Mountains and Metro Atlanta. Hundreds of plates were nominated by food aficionados and rated by a panel of judges.

The classic “Meatball Al Sugo” is a must try, according to one reader.

“RC’s Chargrilled Oysters” at Hugo’s Oyster Bar, located at 10360 Alpharetta Street in Roswell, is “out of this world” and served with fresh French bread, another reader said.

Table & Main on Roswell’s Canton Street once again made the list with its fried chicken. It’s one of the best fried chicken plates available, according to Chute.

Restaurants on Canton Street in Roswell have consistently made the list each year since the guide was created.

Past honorees include Osteria Mattone for its chicken and Roux on Canton for the crawfish risotto.

When my grandmother would come to town, the first thing we’d smell on a Sunday morning was the sautéing of onions and garlic as she started the daylong process of making her red sauce.

It could be because of these memories that my appreciation for passionately and tactfully managed restaurants is so high.

Roswell’s Canton Street has become one of the most densely populated culinary streets in the metro area. One could argue that Greenwoods started the trend when it opened way back in 1986.

It was in a log-cabin on Green Street serving what was then a progressive take on Southern cuisine. It was run by Bill Greenwood, who ran the place like an excited steamboat captain.

In the late 1990s, the city made several infrastructure improvements to Canton Street that attracted several key restaurateurs. Ceviche got in early, as did Hicham Azhari and Fikret Kovac who opened Salt Factory Pub in 2008. From that point, the table was set – people were coming to Canton Street, and good chefs and restaurateurs were taking note. One of those was Ryan Pernice, whose Table & Main and Osteria Mattone helped raised the expectations to another level. Both have their own distinct style, both serve great food and both have earned notoriety throughout the metro area.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Pernice last week and talk about Canton Street and about his new res-

taurant scheduled to open in about a month, which actually will be on another Canton Street up in Alpharetta.

After graduating with a degree in hospitality management from Cornell University, Pernice moved to New York City and immersed himself in the restaurant industry there – eventually helping to open an upscale Italian restaurant called Maialino. He had been hearing of the culinary growth happening back in his hometown on Canton Street, and after 6 years in New York, he decided it was time to come home and start his own restaurant, which became Table & Main.

The restaurant found quick success, and after only a year and a half, he ventured out to open Osteria Mattone.

While both restaurants by any measure are successes, Pernice humbly gives credit to his partner and head chef Woolery “Woody” Back, and that Canton Street location.

“A lot of life is timing and location,” he said. “Canton Street forgives a lot of sins.”

That may be true, but his restaurants haven’t made many. Table & Main was named one of the 14 Must-Try Suburban Restaurants in the U.S. in 2015.

OM and T&M under his belt, you might think you’d find a satisfied Ryan Pernice. You will not. You will find a person with all the excitement of someone who seems to be just getting started.

That excitement is contagious as folks around Atlanta are anxious for his next restaurant scheduled to open probably in early July: Coalition Food and Beverage. At the corner of Canton and Milton Avenue in Alpharetta, his new restaurant will be hard to miss. Like OM and T&M did in Roswell, Coalition will add something unique to the new and exploding downtown Alpharetta scene. Pernice said Coalition will answer the question “what if the classic American diner was invented today?” It’s kind of an upscale, farmto-table styled version of a diner – a fresh array of sandwiches, salads and entrees.

A clever line of sausages, and what looks to be a lively, sharp – yet industrial atmosphere complete with a bar that opens to the sidewalk. Like many, Brenda and I have favorite dishes at T&M and OM and are excited for Coalition’s opening.

Pernice said his philosophy was formed while thinking of the concept for what became T&M. He said he based his entire business plan on the lyrics from the song The Weight.

“The song is about a guy that goes from place to place to rest, but everywhere he goes someone gives him something else to do,” he said. “I just wanted to create a place where a guy could lay his head and take a load off.”

Sounds delicious.

Sanctuary Park breaks ground on multimillion-dollar amenity center Campus Clubhouse to offer food, fitness, conference facilities

The event marked the launch of construction for Rubenstein Partners’ new 25,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art amenity center named The Clubhouse.

The multi-million-dollar facility will feature a food hall, fitness center, conference rooms and training space for all of the estimated 6,500 employees at the campus.

“It’s going to service the entire park,” said Taylor Smith, senior vice president and regional director for Atlanta for Rubenstein Partners. “It will be totally unique, not only in the submarket but probably all of Atlanta. You do see this sometimes in large corporate environments, and we’re trying to replicate the same thing, the same sort of service that

Rubenstein Partners acquired Sanctuary Park in late 2016 when the prop-

erty was already considered the premier Class A office park in the North Fulton submarket. The 150-acre campus just off Westside Parkway consists of nine

buildings offering 1.6 million square feet of office space amid a forested surrounding.

Over the past 18 months, Rubenstein Partners has implemented a multimillion-dollar capital improvement strategy to modernize the property and solidify its standing as one of the top office developments within the entire Atlanta Metro market. Completed enhancements have included lobby, restroom and other interior improvements as well as common area upgrades such as new elevator cabs and an enhanced lakeside outdoor lounge at the Lake View buildings.

The Clubhouse is scheduled to open in the summer of 2019 and will sit adjacent to the campus softball field which is already home to more than half a dozen corporate campus teams.

“Our softball league is something the tenants have really bought into,” Smith said.

The Clubhouse, he said, is designed to further enhance that campus community experience.

“It’s a better amenity than we can provide in any single building,” Smith said. “It’s got conferencing. It’s going to have stadium steps that look out over the softball field.”

PDI establishes global headquarters in Alpharetta ALPHARETTA, Ga. — PDI, a global provider of enterprise software solutions to the convenience retail, wholesale petroleum and logistics industries, recently announced the opening of its global headquarters in Alpharetta.

The company, whose North America operation will remain headquartered in Temple, Texas, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new, 7,500-square-foot office. PDI enlisted Atlanta-based real estate firm SK Commercial Realty to secure the new location and Alpharettabased interior design firm WB Interiors to assist with the design.

The contemporary office design features an open floor concept and multiple collaborative spaces where employees can work together.

PDI’s new headquarters isn’t the only place the company has been investing. In 2018 alone, PDI has acquired two companies: TouchStar, a global logistics software provider, and Excentus, a provider of loyalty and coalition marketing solutions.

The company has already hired more than 30 employees in its Alpharetta office and plans to continue hiring through 2018.

Central Forsyth pitcher drafted by Cleveland Indians

By CONNER EVANS interns@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth Central High School’s Ethan Hankins became the second player in county history drafted by Major League Baseball in the first round on June 4 when the Cleveland Indians selected him No. 35 overall.

At 6-foot-6 and 200 pounds, the Vanderbilt University commit was an intimidating right-hander on the mound for the Bulldogs. Hankins’ fastball has been his go-to pitch, topping out around 96 mph with cutting movement. It’s given opposing hitters trouble since playing varsity his freshman year.

“He blew his fastball by everybody,” Forsyth Central Coach Kevin McCollum said. “He’s got God-given talent. He threw it 87-88 (mph) as a freshman.”

McCollum coached Hankins all four years at Central and saw him grow not only as a player, but as a man. At only 18 years old he still has time to grow, he said.

“He’s a great kid and ultra-competitive,” he said. “He’s like a gifted kid in academics when they can’t get a math

Hankins has been a highly touted prospect since his breakout summer when he won the WBSC Baseball World Cup on the United States’ U18 team. He skyrocketed up draft projections to as high as a top five overall prospect. He even started in the championship game that summer, which McCollum said he secretly watched during school hours.

The way Hankins was scouted during his senior season was unlike anything McCollum said he’d seen before as a coach for over a decade.

“There were 20 scouts at our first

Shoulder stiffness that put Hankins on the bench for a few weeks his senior season hurt his draft stock, but he still earned a first-round selection, narrowly becoming the second such player in county history after Seth Beer of Lambert High School was drafted seven spots higher.

Hankins had dominant stretches during the summer of 2017 and his senior year. Between two six-inning starts during the World Cup he struck out 27 of 36 batters, and he only gave up a handful of earned runs all tournament.

“I don’t know if we’ll have another kid like that at Central, in the county or even in the area,” McCollum said. “They don’t come around too often.”

Youth lacrosse grows in Fulton County

By CONNER EVANS interns@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Boys and girls lacrosse has grown rapidly in North Fulton in the past several years.

Youth programs at places like Newtown Park are seeing more and more girls try out for elementary and middle school teams and go on to play at higher levels.

Lacrosse is still relatively new to Georgia.

Mary Eva, who has two daughters in the Johns Creek Junior Gladiators lacrosse program, said she didn’t even know what the sport was at first.

“My oldest daughter came home one day and said ‘I want to do lacrosse,’” she said. “I said ‘you want to do what?’”

Her husband was equally unfamiliar with the sport, she said. He gave his daughter a boy’s stick by accident for her first practice.

Brandon Allen, the director of Newtown Park and coach of the Alpharetta High school girls varsity team, has overseen much of the rapid growth in North Fulton and beyond, helping organize more than 232 teams across Cherokee, Cobb, Forsyth, Gwinnett and Fulton counties. Just a dozen years ago, New-

town had four lacrosse teams, but now kids tend to favor the sport’s fast-paced nature over sports like baseball or soccer, Allen said.

“Today’s kids need instant gratification,” he said. “In soccer, a 0-0 game is a great game, but it’s not as exciting.”

Allen also pointed to concussions in football as a reason kids have switched to lacrosse. While lacrosse is physical, the “take-out” hits from football don’t happen in the same way, he said.

More coaches from states familiar with lacrosse have come to Georgia too, like Johns Creek Junior Gladiators girl’s coach Mike Hendrickson, who grew up in upstate New York with a hall of fame high school lacrosse coach. He says the Junior Gladiators follow a positive coaching model that emphasizes effort and attitude over ability.

Hendrickson says that throughout the five years he has coached, the growth has been clear. Johns Creek

now has 20 girls per grade trying out for lacrosse starting at third grade.

“For girls, team sports are important,” Hendrickson said. “It teaches them how to get along with a group of girls who have different backgrounds and ideas.”

“I rarely see a kid once they pick up a stick going back to baseball or soccer,” Allen said. “A few years ago we thought the number of teams might level out, but we’ve continued to grow. I don’t see anything slowing down.”

Local nonprofits receive grants from new charity MILTON, Ga. — Three local and regional charities are being recognized for their significant contributions to the residents of North Georgia and beyond. These awards will be the first financial grants provided by the newly created Southern Magnolia Charities organization.

Southern Magnolia Charities was established in 2018 to actively serve the people of the northern portion of the state of Georgia through fundraising events and donations, making philanthropic grants and providing services or support that contribute to the health and vitality of the community. One of its primary fundraisers is the annual Milton Tour of Homes that began in 2016 and is now under the leadership of Southern Magnolia Charities. Google’s 360 nature tours come to Johns Creek

By CARSON COOK carson@northfulton.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The City of Johns Creek has partnered with Google’s Treks to capture 360-degree imagery of local parks and rivers, which users can see through Google Maps.

The project, which is the first of its kind in Georgia, includes panoramic photos of Newtown, Ocee and Shakerag parks, as well as 14 miles of the Chattahoochee River, one mile of Rogers Bridge Trail and one mile of the Linear Park trail in Technology Park.

Google Treks is a product of Google Maps that showcases parks, historic sites and places of natural beauty with immersive, panoramic photos, similar to Google StreetView. Other locations that have been featured by Google include the Grand Canyon, the Pyramids of Giza and the Eiffel Tower. The Trekker team has even captured underwater footage in the Great Barrier Reef.

As Johns Creek invests in its parks, city officials said they stumbled across Google Trek as a way to highlight all the work that has been done, said Nick O’Day, Johns Creek chief data officer “There wasn’t any way to explore the parks online the way you could for a

road,” O’Day said.

Now users can virtually travel down Johns Creek park trails and the Chattahoochee River.

Google provided a 50 pound, backpack-mounted camera that city officials carried around the parks to capture the imagery.

The spherical camera has 15 independent cameras that each take a photo every 1.5 seconds. Google then assembled the photos into panoramic shots and made them available online.

“Basically, it’s the same technology that Google uses on the roofs of cars to do StreetView, but instead it’s basically a backpack mounted version that you can use to trek around,” O’Day said.

To capture the panorama of the Chattahoochee River, O’Day’s team worked with the Fire Department using one of its Swiftwater Rescue boats.

Now visitors can virtually travel down Johns Creek park trails and the Chattahoochee River before they get there.

The 360-degree imagery serves a practical purpose as well. Fire Department staff can access the imagery as they respond to emergencies on the Chattahoochee River as a way to help guide rescue operations, O’Day said.

Hundreds turn out to support Bulloch Hall

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA, Ga. – Bulloch Hall and those who learn from its historic presence in Roswell got a boost June 9 when supporters gathered for the 33rd annual Magnolia Ball.

This year’s event, held at Cherokee Town Club in Buckhead, drew 220 guests in formal attire who spent the evening dancing, dining and participating in fundraising activities.

Proceeds from the ball go toward the preservation of the Greek Revival mansion built in 1839.

Friends of Bulloch, which sponsors the event, also uses part of the proceeds to fund children’s scholarships for summer classes conducted at the mansion, according to Nancy Alterman, co-chair for the ball.

Classes include: • Camp Rough Riders, which teaches kids how cook over a fire pit, learn history from the perspective of the outdoors.

• Miss Mittie’s Academy, which teaches young ladies etiquette and culture.

Pine + Pigment brings DIY, boutique to south Forsyth

The business, located at 410 Peachtree Parkway, is a unique combination of a maker studio and a boutique with mostly local items for sale.

The concept came to founders Trish Csuka and Tracey Jones last year when they realized they would enjoy starting their own crafting space. They spend a

lot of their own time fixing up things for their own homes and helping each other out.

“It’s anything people want to create, whether it’s a porch sign, tray, a favorite quote or coordinates,” Jones said. “Our goal is they walk out of here with a piece they wish they would have seen but instead created themselves.”

The two women have volunteered often in their free time, so they wanted to create a space that brought a sense of community to the store.

“People kept asking where our store was,” Jones said. “It evolved from there.”

Pine + Pigment officially opened seven months ago but had its official ribbon cutting June 12.

“A lot of people come in and say, ‘wow, this is a great concept. We don’t see things like this around here anymore,’” Csuka said. “They like the idea we’re pulling in local artisans. They like the idea you come into our space and it feels like a community or somebody’s home, not necessarily a store front.

When we opened, we knew we wanted this to be community-based.”

The store created a local artisan coop so they offer mostly women’s work from Johns Creek, Alpharetta and Cumming.

“There is so much talent in this area,” Jones said. “We wanted to make people aware of it. We wanted them to know what’s available and who’s right around the corner from them.”

Once a month, the business has a give-it-back campaign where they choose a nonprofit and give back 50 percent of proceeds to that cause.

“That’s our way to give back to the community,” Jones said. “That was in our business plan from the beginning.”

In 2011, Jones was diagnosed with a brain tumor, with the next few years consisting of six surgeries and endless trips to the hospital.

She used an inspirational quote to get through that tough time and now wants to share that message with others.

“When Tracey had her brain tumor, we knew we’d do something that was going to be inspirational to women,” Csuka said. “We wanted something around quotes and that people could have in their space to be living an intentional life. This is how we ended up with the space we have today.”

Centennial students recognized by National Charity League ROSWELL, Ga. — Centennial High School recently celebrated several students who are members of the National Charity League – Milton Chapter and the recognition they received because of their commitment to community service. The 11 young women gave a total of 582 hours of community service in the 2017-2018 to better their community.

The National Charity League is one of the nation’s oldest and most well-respected mother-daughter organizations with a mission to foster mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization. They are committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.

The Milton Chapter is now in its sixth year.

Emergency calls are exempt from this law. Drivers will be able to use their phones to report any traffic accident, fire, crime, medical emergency or hazardous road condition.

Alpharetta police have already released a video highlighting the major changes drivers can expect and clarifying common misconceptions. Milton police have likewise printed and are dis-

tributing flyers regarding the new law.

Georgia will join 15 other states with hands-free laws.

“Those states saw a 16 percent decrease in traffic fatalities in the two years after their laws passed,” said local resident Jenny Harty, who was instrumental in getting the bill passed. “If that trend were to repeat itself in Georgia, we hope, we would potentially see 300 lives saved in two years. That potentially equates to a high school graduating class.”

First-time violators of this law will incur one point on their license and a fine of $50 or less. That penalty will increase to two points and up to $100 in fines for a second offense. Likewise, a third-time violator will get three points and up to $150 in fines.
