MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman’s credit card was recently used for multiple fraudulent transactions totaling over $700.

The victim reported to police that her Macy’s credit card had been used for three transactions at the Southlake Mall in Morrow on Dec. 15. The victim said she received a notification of the charges and immediately called Macy’s fraud department.

Construction materials taken from Milton site MILTON, Ga. — Approximately $8,000 in construction materials were taken from a job site in Milton on Dec. 18.

Workers with an interior construction company reported to police that an estimated 80 aluminum “walk boards” had been stolen from behind the building under construction on Ga. 9. The employees said the boards were present when they left the site the previous day but were gone the next day when the superintendent arrived at the site at 7:30 a.m.

Juvenile confesses to attempted theft MILTON, Ga. — A juvenile was cited for disorderly conduct after he was apprehended by police for allegedly attempting to conceal an LED video light from the Milton Walmart.

Police responded to a call by a Walmart employee who reported the teen was using a knife to attempt to open a package and conceal the light. The juvenile was spotted attempting to locate a spot within the store to finish opening the package, according to the incident report.

While on the phone with a Macy’s representative, her card was used for a purchase at Lennox Mall in Atlanta. Macy’s then cancelled the card.

An officer advised the woman to check her credit and report the fraudulent charges to the Morrow and Atlanta police agencies.

An officer apprehended the teen in the store. The juvenile claimed he was attempting to get a Christmas present and had to steal the light because he did not have any money.

The officer found $53 in the teen’s wallet.

Target employee cited for stealing merchandise

Woman faces charges of battery to police

MILTON, Ga. — An employee at the Ga. 9 Target was terminated and received a criminal trespass warning after allegedly stealing merchandise from the store.

According to a store employee, the suspect attempted to leave the store with $155 in home goods without paying for the items.

The suspect said he attempted to take the items because he did not have any food at home.

He was issued a misdemeanor theft by shoplifting citation and criminal trespass warning.

MILTON, Ga. — An Alpharetta woman faces charges of family violence, willful obstruction and simple battery against police following an incident on Christmas Eve. Milton Police responded to a call from a man who said his wife was destroying items in their home. When police arrived, the man said he and his wife had argued earlier and the situation had escalated.

The man said his wife began throwing Christmas presents, had attempted to use scissors to cut up a purse the man had purchased his mother and had torn a towel rack off the wall of a bathroom.

Officers saw evidence confirming the man’s statements.

Based on the evidence, officers charged the woman with criminal trespass family violence. The woman refused to speak and began kicking officers as they attempted to arrest her.

The suspect also refused to enter a patrol vehicle following her arrest and continued to kick officers, according to the report.

She was turned over to Fulton County Sheriff’s deputies.

Stolen identity used to ring up purchases MILTON, Ga. — A Milton man’s credit was used to rack up $10,000 in fraudulent charges at home improvement stores.

The victim reported to police that he received $2,000 in fraudulent charges to his Home Depot credit card despite having the card in his possession.

Make Healthier Eyes Part of Your New Year’s Resolution

By Cameron Johnson, MD A cataract is caused by the clouding of the natural human lens. When the cloudy lens is removed with surgery, a new artificial lens is placed in the eye to focus images properly.

When considering cataract surgery, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits of the surgery with your eye doctor. With advancements in artificial lens technology over the last decade, discussing the type of new lens to be placed in the Cameron Johnson, M.D. eye has become very important as well.

Laser Cataract, Corneal, Refractive, and MIGS Surgeon

When a person reaches their 40’s, they begin to note that they are no longer able to see up close without glasses. While patients often have much decreased need for glasses for distance vision after cataract surgery, with a standard lens they will still need reading glasses for near vision.

Fortunately, patients now have additional lens options. One of these options is called a multifocal lens. This type of lens corrects both near and distance vision.

One survey found that 4 out of 5 patients with this type of lens reported never wearing glasses. Many patients find that these lenses add greatly to their quality of life and enjoy the convenience of not having to keep up with reading glasses.

However, these lenses are not for all patients. In order for these lenses to work well, patients must have relatively healthy eyes. Those with severe dry eye, macular degeneration, or advanced glaucoma are not good candidates. A patient also must not have much astigmatism in order for these lenses to work well. Patients with larger amounts of astigmatism would likely benefit more from an astigmatism correcting intraocular lens.

Patient personality plays a role as well. While multifocal lenses are very good, they are not capable to giving patients the vision they had when they were 20 years old. Like all technologies they have limitations. Patients often note haloes around lights and can have glare issues, especially at night. However these symptoms are less noticeable with time. In one study, 6 months after surgery, only about 6 percent of patients described these problems as severe. Reading with these lenses requires adequate lighting, so patients may still need reading glasses in a dimly lit restaurant. There may be some decreased sharpness as compared to standard lenses, especially at night and in rainy or foggy conditions. This means that patients who know themselves to be perfectionists wanting the clearest possible vision at every distance, may do better with a standard lens and reading glasses. Finally, these lenses are considered to be similar to LASIK or cosmetic surgery by insurance companies. Therefore they are not covered by insurance and require an additional fee. However, even given these limitations, 93% of patients receiving one popular type of multifocal lens say they would choose to have a multifocal lens again.

2019 could be a big year for transit It’s hard to believe 2018 is already behind us. Looking back, in Fulton County we made progress in several key areas: transportation and transit, improving our tax assessment process — including rolling out new homestead exemptions for the benefit of our homeowners — and ramping up our behavioral health programs to combat the Liz Hausmann Fulton County Commissioner, District 1 opioid epidemic and other issues afflicting families.

Before we officially move on to 2019, it’s worth taking a moment to revisit these successes of this year.

In 2018, we made great strides to improve our transportation network through partnerships with our cities, state officials and the federal government.

Early on, Fulton County mayors and commissioners agreed on the Fulton Transit Master Plan’s recommendation that bus rapid transit (BRT) along Ga. 400 would provide the best return on investment for our region. Not long after, state government endorsed our BRT plan as Gov. Nathan Deal announced $100 million in state funding to support the rollout, marking the first time that Georgia, Fulton County and MARTA directly partnered together on a mass transit project.

Of course, to fully implement transit expansion in Fulton County, a referendum to expand sales tax funding will need to be approved by our citizens. When implemented, we expect to see a substantial improvement in traffic congestion while providing a safe, fast and convenient new way to travel. And in 2019, the

Atlanta Transit Link will provide a new avenue for regional improvements.

Improving our property tax assessment process was a key priority for Fulton County and our legislative delegation in 2018. Among other efforts, the Board of Commissioners invested in improvements to the Tax Assessor’s system to enhance communication to ensure citizens receive accurate information, allowed for online appeals and held community meetings in each commission district to allow homeowners to directly speak with the chief appraiser. At the General Assembly, we worked with our delegation to pass a new senior homestead exemption along with floating home-

There are many accomplishments to highlight, but I begin with property taxes. In November, voters approved measures that will offer Bob Ellis Fulton County Commissioner, District 2 homeowners tax relief in 2019. All cities in North Fulton will now cap their tax increases, as will the Fulton County school system. We are pleased that Fulton County government already has this cap in place, so this will offer additional relief to property owners. In addition, residents over 65 years old will be eligible for a $20,000 additional homestead exemption.

Also, there was a favorable court ruling siding with Fulton government supporting actions taken in 2017 to protect homeowners from error-ridden, excessive assessment notices. Work remains to be done in 2019 to improve the appeals and assessment process for citizens, and I will continue to push for better customer service for our taxpayers.

Fulton continues to spearhead efforts to address the opioid crisis. We saw positive signs as the death toll related to the opioid crisis in the county declined

16 percent in 2017, and indicators are that it will decline again in 2018. These are signs the steps that have been taken are having an impact, but we must press on with a coordinated effort on local, state and federal levels.

The county established an opioid coordinator whose focus is to identify and coordinate successful education, prevention and treatment initiatives.

In addition, we were the first county in Georgia to file a lawsuit against opioid distributors and manufacturers, and we are now part of a nationwide class action lawsuit that will move forward in 2019. Multiple cities and counties in Georgia joined that effort in 2018, and we are encour-

stead exemptions for all North Fulton cities and Fulton County Schools to prevent value increases turning into an unfair tax hike. Voters endorsed these measures at the ballot box in November, and they will provide relief in 2019.

Improving behavioral health services was another 2018 priority for Fulton County. First, we designated an opioid coordinator to collaborate our efforts throughout the county. The coordinator has participated in over 15 public meetings with partners throughout the region, including private sector addiction counseling services. The Fulton County Commission also voted to continue to supply our first responders with Naloxone, saving lives in the tragic event of an opioid overdose. Currently, we are working with the Fulton County Behavioral Health Working Group at the General Assembly to identify potential state legislation to bring crisis and assessment centers to Fulton County.

As we turn to 2019, we will be working with our newly elected legislative delegation and city leadership to provide quality services for our community. Among things you can expect are a continued focus on transportation and transit expansion, library renovations throughout the county, plans for a new animal control shelter, an economic development plan to market the Fulton County story throughout the country, plans for a performing arts center in Johns Creek and overall continued effort to improve and streamline all government services and administration.

Heading into the new year, we have positive momentum for a bright future for Fulton County. Best wishes for a prosperous, healthy and happy 2019!

A strong infrastructure of mental health services is needed in Fulton. Fulton introduced a new service model in 2018 that is providing better services to more citizens, and we will expand upon that in 2019. I am especially encouraged about our Text 4 Help program that we launched in 2018. Teens in 10 Fulton schools can now anonymously text 24/7 and reach a licensed clinician who can address any problems they may feel are overwhelming. It is a great resource for our youth who often feel under pressure and are seeking an outlet. We are excited to expand the program in the New Year.

Libraries across Fulton are undergoing a transformation, as we continue to redesign and modernize our library facilities. Residents are dealing with closures that may be inconvenient, but the pain will be worth the gain when the libraries reopen with new HVAC systems, improved technology, large study rooms and so much more.

Please continue offering your feedback as we work to ensure tax dollars are spent wisely. Our goal is to continue improving the quality of life and providing excellent service to our citizens.

Mayor Lockwood looks ahead to 2019 Another year has flown by, and here we are in 2019!

The holidays are a time for celebration, but it’s also a time for reflection and anticipation as one year concludes and a new year arrives. We JOE LOCKWOOD celebrate our loved Milton mayor ones, our blessings and our successes, but we also look to the upcoming year with thoughtful reflection and great excitement.

The city will officially celebrate its 2018 accomplishments during the Jan. 31 State of the City event at City Hall.

Residents, business owners, and community partners are invited to celebrate with us. However, the State of the City is more than just a celebration or a party —it’s about accountability, good governance, and transparency for our citizens. That night, I’ll share details on where we’ve been and where we’re headed, and I hope you’ll make plans to attend, but in the meantime I’d like share a preview with you.

Thanks in part to our citizen-led committee, we’re successfully executing our $25 million greenspace bond referendum with over 200 acres of greenspace preserved in 2018 alone, and additional acres are anticipated this year.

Our transportation enhancements and improvements are in full swing with four TSPLOST projects launching in 2018 and two more projects coming online in 2019, not to mention the two traffic safety officers that will begin providing services at key intersections dur-

ing critical commute times.

The cumulative effects of TSPLOST revenues in expediting Milton transportation projects are undeniable and have allowed us to more quickly address the congestion and connectivity concerns of our residents.

You’ve seen these visible improvements throughout 2018, and you’ll continue to see these types of community advancements in 2019.

You’ll also benefit from significant enhancements taking place behind the scenes at City Hall. In 2019, our staff will be focusing on making technology work for us — the city, its staff, and our customers (that’s you).

We’re implementing a new informa-

tion technology strategic plan that will create administrative efficiencies for our staff and our customers. By implementing new software and taking advantage of advanced technologies, we’re going to offer a new and improved website experience for our citizens, increase selfservice access to public records, and streamline the development review process which allows our staff to more adequately focus on community outcomes and expectations.

I hope you’ll make plans to join us for the State of the City on Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m., when I’ll share more 2018 details and what you can expect in 2019 from your city government. We’ve officially moved into our second decade of operation, and there’s no doubt that the future is bright in Milton!

We never forget So, the postChristmas 2018 column came earlier than I thought it would. It started arriving about 7 p.m. Christmas night, about halfway through our family Christmas presentRay appen opening gathering Publisher ray@appenmediagroup.com in our home with all three of my children, daughter in-law Kristina, our two grandchildren, wife Christina and me.

I usually write when something inspires me; I am not a professional — one who writes with or without inspiration.

For me it has to begin with something. It can be as simple a word, a color, a smell, a memory — or just about anything else ranging from mundane trivia to something I overheard, to some sort of epiphany about some cosmic law.

Today in church for example, I thought of something I wasn’t even sure I had actually encountered before, but for some reason it leaked out of my little brain — “Thurn and Taxis.” I know something in the sermon brought that memory out, and it must have been

something significant, although for the life of me I haven’t the foggiest idea right now what that could be. I am sure it will come to me at some point.

I did Google it and discovered that the memory did indeed originate from experience; it came from a book (“The Crying of Lot 49”) I read for my 10th grade literature class — two words that have lain dormant in my brain now since 1973 — for 45 years. Go figure.

Memory is my mystery. Shared memory often, is a gift redeemed.

I remember once walking down a sidewalk, and the answer to a question that I had missed on the final in my freshman psychology class popped out of my brain and spilled out like a cracked egg onto a hot skillet. I literally yelled out. I was so excited to finally have harvested that one and pulled it back into my fold of cognition.

I believe that we never forget anything we experience — ever. It’s there in memory cells inside our brain forever. I believe the same thing is true of knowledge or insight.

So my column is about my children and what I saw from and with them during our Christmas. What I saw surprised me and pleased me beyond measure.

Everything I have ever learned, I have learned from my children — from all children. What the children are telling me is that we can do this.

But I should not have been surprised, because it was something I already knew and appreciated. I had just forgotten.

As we sat around the living room opening presents together, I saw — in time distilled — all those years of talking, listening, teaching, preaching, reading, pushing and pulling our children almost as if by magic, present itself before me in finished form. What startled me wasn’t so much that I saw “good” — which I did see — as much as it was simply my witness, my realization that night, of who they had become.

It was their giving — and “the” giving — that night that danced out on center stage as brilliant as any prima ballerina and as beautiful as the music of “Swan Lake” and as unique as shells upon a beach. It was their giving that in that moment for me defined them and filled me with satisfaction and wonder.

What they gave for Christmas presents that night brought both my wife and me to tears.

Ghana — along with an envelope that held his donation, in her name, to an organization that searches for and saves these children.

She wants to save the world and volunteers for two outreaches — one for refugees and one for foster children in addition to her part time job as a nanny. Her brother gave her a gift that can only have come from great love and delivered on the wings of an angel.

She gave socks and other clothing to her brothers — all “fair-trade” produced.

Her mother gave her the opal bracelet that I gave her so long ago when we were first married.

I gave my daughter a woolen blanket — 100 percent alpaca — because I knew it would be something that would evoke a memory, something tactile, something that gave comfort and security.

My little one gave me a book. He gave me a book written by the same author who wrote “The Little Prince,” the book I read to all three of them countless times at night before they

Milton continues efforts to foster the ‘right’ economic development

BY JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Attracting economic growth in Milton is not simply fostering expansion, but businesses must be the “right fit” for the city and its residents.

That’s the mission statement for Milton Economic Development Director Sarah LaDart, who says the city will partner with Buxton Group again in 2019 to find appropriate businesses for the Birmingham Crossroads District.

The city first partnered with the Texas-based business analytics company in 2017 to find tenants for its Deerfield area businesses. Occupancy was not an issue for the Deerfield shopping centers, LaDart said, but the amount of turnover was a concern.

By analyzing sales in the area, Buxton identified the type of businesses needed in the city.

“When a store asks for your zip code, Buxton can take that data and identify where, for instance, we are seeing a lot of 30004 [shoppers] at a store in Sandy Springs,” LaDart said. “It shows where residents are shopping elsewhere and shows what kind of businesses we need in Milton. At the same time, it can show us surpluses of particular businesses.”

Milton then shares this data with builders who can fill a need by attracting the “right” companies to their developments.

Buxton completed its survey of Downtown Crabapple in 2018 which could provide a boon for the continued economic expansion of the swelling district.

“Right now there is a lot of preparation with a handful of buildings coming out of the ground soon,” LaDart said. “We’re getting really prepared for that and helping developers get through the process and get ready for expansion.”

While the city looks to cultivate long-term businesses, at least two major companies viewed Milton as the right fit in 2018.

Brainjocks invested $1.2 million into its new U.S. headquarters in Deerfield in April 2018. The marketing technology firm’s move from Woodstock brought over 40 jobs to the city.

Milton partnered with Texas-based business analytics company Buxton Group to identify appropriate businesses for the Downtown Crabapple area in 2018. The city will continue its partnership with the firm to study economic development in the Birmingham Crossroads District this year.

Milton also received a workforce boost in 2018 with the expansion of payment technology firm InComm. The city was included in the $20 million investment by the company to expand in Metro Atlanta and Columbus.

While the city looks to increase its economic influence in North Fulton, an emphasis in 2019 is to also ensure an open line of communication with current businesses and their needs, LaDart said. The city will

do that this year with its business survey.

“We’re very excited in reference to our business retention efforts and our business survey which will allow us to see where we are doing well and where we need to approve,” LaDart said.

The city’s last business survey, conducted in 2017, led to the city offering three new alcohol licenses and addressing workforce issues.

“The survey also allows companies who maybe haven’t presented us with any problems the opportunity to do so and allows us to help resolve them,” LaDart said.

Computers are driving the stock market Pay attention Whereas a human might wait to make a move, perhaps being intimidated by the impact a big purchase or selloff would have on the markets, computers are programmed to act the instant the market changes. react to those moves, and then make their own moves ahead of the people’s moves. So people click “buy” on their computers in their offices. But before the signal can travel through the cables and into the stock exchange floor, the computers have intercepted the signal and sent another signal ahead of the original purchase to buy the same stock and drive up the price. That original buyer clicked “buy” on their computer for one price, but is actually sold the stock at a higher price. And whoever owns the computer makes fast money.

It’s an insanely complex system.

And the big shots on Wall Street today may look less like Gordon Gekko and more like Bill Gates. Not only are the algorithms that go into the computers complex, but so are the codes that these programmers, or “coders,” have to create to make these computers perform. Some of the best coders may not be in Silicone Valley, but may instead be working on Wall Street.

It is impossible to know how the stock market would have reacted over the last month if humans were still in charge. But the thought is that losses that occurred in a day, actually may have taken a week, or month, etc.

The other thing speeding up the trading is that the remaining 15 percent of people still making their own

trades trust the computers. When the computers start selling one thing heavy, everyone else jumps on board, moving together like a herd.

Economists are having a tough time reading the market volatility because of the computers. They can’t tell if the market is showing us the reality of the global economy to come, or if computers are simply amplifying normal “year-end nervousness.”

One thing is for sure – it’s driven mortgage interest rates down. Whereas best-execution for a 30-year conventional mortgage, according to MortgageNewsDaily, was right at 5 percent a month ago, today they are closer to 4.75 percent. As most of you know, the stock market has been throwing temper tantrums lately.

According to an article this week in the Wall Street Journal, about 85 percent of all trading is controlled by computers. And I don’t mean that humans use computers to make the trades, I mean the computers are monitoring trading activity, market data and even political rhetoric and then making instantaneous decisions on what to buy or sell. As the WSJ article put it, the volatility we’ve been seeing in the stock market is being driven mostly on autopilot.

This explains the speed with which these swings in the market are happening. Whereas a human might wait to make a move, perhaps being intimidated by the impact a big purchase or selloff would have on the markets, computers are programmed to act the instant the market changes.

Computers have quickly been taking over the stock market for the last 15 years. Michael Lewis, author of “The Big Short,” wrote a book called “Flash Boys” that does a fantastic job of describing how this took place — and really how one conservative Canadian banker found out about it and tried to change it. It’s a fascinating and entertaining read. He describes how these computers are so fast that they are literally placed inside a stock exchange right where the fiber optic cables enter the building. They are so fast that they read people’s moves to buy or sell stocks, make a decision on how to

Area sees large economic impact from University of North Georgia GEORGIA — New data that was released at the beginning of December shows the University of North Georgia having a $620 million economic impact on Northeast Georgia during fiscal year 2017.

The annual study of the University System of Georgia’s economic impact measures direct and indirect spending that contributes to the university’s service region.

“This study is a timely reminder of the significant role UNG has in advancing economic growth and prosperity in the areas we serve,” President Bonita C. Jacobs said.

“The report complements our ongoing work with industry and community partners to increase educational attainment and regional economic development efforts that enhance this region.”

North Atlanta Flooring Trends for 2019 When it comes to flooring, most people want something that is stylish and practical…and not something that is too trendy and may fade out in a few years. Flooring is the foundation for your home decor, and you don’t want to have to replace it every few years.

John Hogan, owner of Remodeling Expo Center has his fingers on the pulse of what will be the Trends for floors in 2019 and beyond: Trend #1. Hardwood…almost everywhere. Dark hardwood flooring. Yes, hardwood continues to grow and it is the preferred surface in most rooms. In fact, many homeowners are converting their kitchen floors and entryways (as well as powder rooms to hardwood floors. Here’s what’s trending with hardwood flooring.

Cool colors – dark browns, gray, white washes, wide planks and matte and satin finishes.

Trend #2. Porcelain tile that looks like wood. As further evidence of the trend and preference towards hardwood flooring, it’s super interesting that now we have more and more alternative products that mimic the look (and sometimes the feel) of hardwood flooring. Tile wood-look planks are often used in areas that may have water or moisture (e.g. kitchens, bathrooms, basements) and on top of concrete sub-floors where it may be difficult or inappropriate to install solid hardwood flooring. These products have been on the rise because they look like hardwood and they are waterproof at the same time. Cooler colors such as whites, grays, espressos are most popular.

Trend #3. Engineered Vinyl Planks/ Luxury Vinyl that looks like wood. This wins the gold star for being the breakout trend for the year. This new category began 5 or 6 years ago and it’s been growing and breaking records each year.

Early adopters loved it because it looks and feels so real…and because it’s WATERPROOF. It also has a cork underlayment for some extra cushioning and insulation. The technology has gotten so good that it can replicate the look of real wood on to the surfaces. For an even more authentic look and feel, many have embossed grainy textures and distressed styles. Board and Batten Shutters A shutter typically composed of three to five vertical boards that are connected using two or three horizontal battens.

These shutters inspire a country or cottage look and have grown in popularity in the last few years. The latest trend is to have multiple narrow boards to create a cleaner, more sophisticated look. This style lends itself to adding additional interest by adding diagonal pieces or even strap hinges.

Louvered Shutters.

Louvered styled shutters are the original “classic standard,” found on period buildings such as Antebellum, Colonial, Williamsburg, Georgian and Federal styled houses. Louvered shutters create an additional architectural element to enhance the house’s façade. Louvered shutters can also be the right choice for Contemporary styled buildings wishing to create a more traditional appearance.

For a slightly more modern look you can make the slats wider to give a cleaner, less busy appearance.

Paneled Shutters This traditional style consists of panels within a frame. This shutter style’s popularity during the last number of decades has firmly entrenched it as the “traditional look.” Especially with the panels you can select a number of styles based on your preference. How to identify a sick tree It’s easy to miss when a tree is growing sick. Most tree health problems grow slowly, with little visible difference from one day to the next, until leaves change colors or the canopy begins to thin. • Examine dead branches, which may simply need pruning, but which can also indicate that a tree is in poor health.

Where to recycle your Christmas tree

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The time to box ornaments, take down the tinsel and get rid of Christmas trees has arrived. Fortunately for North Fulton and Forsyth County residents, there are a bevy of locations to donate your trees at no cost while contributing to local beautification projects.

North Fulton cities and Forsyth County have teamed with the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation to host “Bring One for the Chipper” events throughout the area. Residents can donate trees which are turned into mulch for use at playgrounds, beautification projects and residential landscaping.

Ornaments, lights and other decorations must be removed from trees prior to donation.

Forsyth County Forsyth residents can donate trees at six locations this month. Recycling centers will not accept trees on Jan. 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Wood chips made from recycled trees will be available to residents for pickup

at Coal Mountain Park. Residents are responsible for loading and hauling wood chips.

Here’s a list of drop-off sites: • Home Depot (100 Market Place Boulevard): Accepting trees until 4 p.m. on Jan. 5.

• Home Depot (2635 Peachtree Parkway): Accepting trees until 4 p.m. on Jan. 5.

Keep Johns Creek Beautiful has specialized equipment that destroys fluorescent lights and removes mercury for later recovery by a certified fluorescent light recycling firm.

Christina gave blankets. And she gave clothes that served specific wants and needs. She gave my little one art, an image of a Waffle House — something she had purchased a number of years ago but which she had been unable to gift to him until now because of memories.

I gave my oldest a 150-year-old plank from a ship that sank off our island in 1899. It still has the wooden dowels imbedded into its rough-hewn profile. I gave Christina alpaca wool too, and replaced earrings that were special to her and which disappeared long ago.

My daughter-in-law gave gifts of time, something that she has so little of, and photos of a family she is now such a part of.

My youngest gave his brother a leather welder’s apron because his big brother of late works with wood and makes furniture.

During Christmas that night my daughter played her accordion for us.

My oldest gave me a book on Tyranny. He wants to save the world too — in a different way than his sister.

My youngest gave me a movie — the rendition of the book I make the anchor of my Christmas letter this year — “The Freedom Writers.”

As a teenager I used to grow cactus from seed. Often the seeds could only be seen under a microscope. I would spread them over sand in a tray, and many times over a year, would pass before they would germinate.

But I waited with patience because I knew that those seeds would eventually grow and some day, many years later, would produce beautiful blooms — just like my children.

This year, I closed my Christmas letter to friends, family and others with the following: “Despite the chaos and confusion that 2018 has presented us, I remain optimistic for our future —for our children’s and their children’s future. I’ve seen what a group of absolutely-nothing-going-forthem high school kids can do, accomplish and achieve by sheer force of will and by the inspiration of a single person.

And so…

Everything I have ever learned, I have learned from my children — from all children. What the children are telling me is that we can do this.”

MILTON, Ga. — Milton basketball hosted an “Adopt-a-Family” event for the family of a former Fulton County Schools officer who served at Milton High School.

Fulton County Schools officer Rodriguez “Rod” Rice passed away following a heart attack in January 2018 and was survived by his wife, Shalanda, and their two children, Asa and Noah. Rice had

served as a Milton High resource officer for approximately seven years until 2012.

On Dec. 19, Milton basketball players, coaches, parents and the booster club showered the Rice family with gifts, food and support in their first Christmas without Rod at a potluck dinner at the school.

Milton football standouts officially commit MILTON, Ga. — Four standout seniors with Milton’s 2018 state championship football team inked their commitments to play at the collegiate level at a recent signing day ceremony.

Quarterback Jordan Yates committed to Georgia Tech after a senior season in which he threw for 2,596 yards with 1,204 yards rushing and 37 total touchdowns.

Jordan Cox committed to Southern Illinois. The senior hauled in 28 receptions for 539 yards with four touch-

downs this season.

Defensive back Joseph Charleston signed with Clemson for the 2019 season. Charleston had 95 total tackles during the 2018 season with four tackles for loss, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Allen Walker officially committed to Louisiana Tech. Walker, a linebacker, had 44 total tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 23 quarterback hurries and three fumble recoveries in 2018 with the Eagles.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MARIETTA, Ga. — St. Francis boys basketball tipped off the 2018 Tournament of Champions at Wheeler High School last Thursday with an 82-77 win over Florida powerhouse Blanche Ely. The Tournament of Champions lived up to its designation with St. Francis and Branche Ely combining for seven state championships in the last seven seasons. As expected, the two perennial title contenders showcased a bevy of talent during a down-to-the-wire contest.

Both squads played at a breakneck pace throughout the contest and neither team could find separation. Less than four points separated the teams until late in the third quarter when the Knights used a takeaway and free throws from Dwon Odom and Jusaun Holt to build a 75-68 margin with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Knights looked to milk the clock with its three-possession lead and ran off 35 seconds ahead of an Odom free throw.

However, the Tigers did not go quietly.

Tigers free throws cut the lead to 76-70 and St. Francis’ CJ Riley missed two free throws. Those misses set up a 3-pointer from Blanche Ely with 40 seconds left.

The Tigers looked to continue their late comeback bid with a turnover at midcourt on the Knights’ possession which led to a layup and foul. The ensuing free throw was missed and allowed St. Francis to retain a 67-66 lead with 27 ticks on the clock.

Holt was fouled on the Knights’ inbound pass and made both his attempts to put the Tigers’ deficit at three points.

Blanche Ely converted a layup with 17 seconds remaining, but Odom put the lead back at three with two made free throws.

The Tigers’ three-point attempt to tie the game was missed and Odom, who dunked to open the scoring, provided slam dunk bookends to the game with a windmill slam to seal the Knights’ win.

Odom led the Knights with 34 points, including nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Chase Ellis added 18 points, and Holt finished the contest with eight points and 10 rebounds.

St. Francis, the defending Class A-Private state runner-up, improved to 9-2 overall. The Knights currently lead the Region 6-A standings and return to region play this Friday on the road against Mount Paran Christian.
