ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police charged a woman with drunk driving shortly after midnight Jan. 1 after she allegedly crashed her car into a police cruiser.

Alpharetta police had stopped to investigate a vehicle crash on Ga. 400 south near Holcomb Bridge Road around 2:30 a.m., when their car was struck on the side of the road. The officers were not in their vehicles at the time but had activated their emergency lights.

Neither the officers nor the woman were injured, police said.

The woman had been traveling about 80 miles per hour, and her blood alcohol was nearly three times the legal limit, police said.

Roswell police arrived soon after and arrested the woman on DUI charges.

MILTON, Ga. — A Milton resident reported a possible break-in attempt at his home just after midnight on Jan. 1.

The homeowners had left their home around 5:30 p.m. and returned at approximately 12:30 a.m. Upon their return, they discovered a window on the front of the home was partially open and the screen covering the window had been bent. They told police the window had been closed and the screen was undamaged when they left the home.

The homeowners said a babysitter was at the home while they were out and the alarm was not turned on. There was no sign that anyone had rummaged through the house.

No officers were injured after a DUI suspect crashed into an Alpharetta police car on Jan. 1.

Jan. 1 that a headlight unit on his car was stolen while he was at work.

The man said that while on his break around 5 p.m., he noticed the passenger headlight assembly on his 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix was missing. According to the incident report, the rubber seal around the headlight appeared to have been cut and someone removed the entire unit. The driver’s side headlight also appeared to have been cut but left on the car.

The victim said the car is a discontinued model and replacements are difficult to find. He estimated the value of the unit at $125. Store employees said they would review surveillance footage and contact Milton Police if they discovered any information.

Parked vehicle stolen from deck at Avalon ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are investigating a Dec. 28 incident in which a car parked in the Veranda at Avalon parking deck was stolen overnight.

The vehicle owner told police he had parked the car on the fifth floor at 3:30 p.m. the previous day. But the next morning, it was gone.

ment said they did not tow the car. Police said there were no signs of shattered glass. There was no security footage.

Suspect flees on foot after police stop car ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police are looking for a man who ran away from officers after his vehicle was pulled over at an apartment complex on Dec. 23.

The man was pulled over for speeding 20 miles over the limit shortly after midnight on Old Milton Parkway toward the Belmont Apartment Complex.

When the car reached the apartment complex and stopped, the driver got out and ran away toward Springberry Court.

Officers were unable to locate him.

Police said the registration on the car was suspended. The photo license associated with the car matched the suspect and had been suspended for three separate incidents.

Officers discover drugs while jump starting car ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested two brothers Dec. 25 after officers found 245 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms and marijuana in their cars.

Officers patrolling around midnight on Ga. 400 northbound near Haynes Bridge Road stopped to help two cars that were stranded on the off ramp.

While jump starting the cars, an officer noticed the two drivers, who were brothers, smelled of marijuana.

Inside the car, a K-9 found a plastic bag with loose marijuana, several vials of marijuana cigarettes, THC oil, marijuana edibles, a bag containing hallucinogenic mushroom and other drug paraphernalia.

Officers also found $8,000 in cash.

The brothers were arrested on possession of schedule I drugs and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Other charges may be pending.

Fulton County sets legislative priorities for 2019

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Fulton County Board of Commissioners has set election reform and transit as priorities it wants to see from the 2019 General Assembly.

At their Dec. 19 meeting, commissioners heard a presentation from its Department of External Affairs, which oversees intergovernmental relations. The department worked with the commissioners to set legislative priorities for the county to advocate for in the upcoming year.

With its gubernatorial and U.S. House races garnering national attention this year, Fulton County’s election systems came under heavy scrutiny.

Countywide, there were questions and complaints about wait times and the handling of absentee ballots.

On Election Day, one precinct, Pittman Park Recreation Center in Atlanta, started the day with only three voting machines.

Three polling places stayed open past 7 p.m. Nov. 6, and one extended hours for the runoff Dec. 4.

With this in mind, Fulton County is throwing its support behind state legislation to simplify the election process. One specific proposal calls for making Election

Day voting employ the same countywide precinct voting model used in early voting.

“You go to early vote, you can go anywhere, but on Election Day you can’t go anywhere,” Commissioner Lee Morris said. “If the technology is there to do it anywhere on early voting days, why in the world is it not there on Election Day to do it anywhere? So I think it’s a great idea.”

The county also requested language in the current laws be changed so that early voting is no longer referred to as “absentee in person,” an official term that some find confusing. Commissioners also supported funding for new election equipment to be distributed based on population so its needs are met.

Commissioners also addressed concerns about representation on the ATL, the region’s new transit board. No Fulton County elected officials are serving on the first board, which consists of 16 members. The county also stated its support for transit funding.

After pushing for new homestead exemptions in 2018, Fulton County is expanding its efforts to assist taxpayers: improving the Board of Equalization process. When taxpayers appeal their property valuations, their case can be sent to the Board of Equalization.

Fulton County is proposing citizens be given the option to opt-in to email notification of hearings, rather than receiving the information in the mail. The county also supports multiple meeting locations for the Board of Equalization to foster access and changes to the process for rescheduling hearings.

Also related to taxes, the county supports streamlining the homestead exemption process and urges the creation of a committee to study the use of Tax Allocation Districts.

Only one proposal failed to receive the support of the commissioners Dec. 19. Commissioner Emma Darnell had requested the county support the repeal

of certain legislation that singles out Fulton County either directly or by population. For example, a 2013 law requires the election board chair to be nominated by the delegation, where in every other county they are appointed by the board of commissioners.

Commissioner Marvin Arrington said they should be careful of which laws the county asks the Legislature to repeal because in some cases Fulton County requires exceptional treatment because of its population and size.

The motion failed with Chair Robb Pitts and commissioners Natalie Hall and Arrington voting in support, Commissioner Bob Ellis voting against, and commissioners Liz Hausmann and Morris not voting. Commissioner Darnell was not present at the meeting.

Other initiatives supported by the county include funding for behavioral health services, expanding access to health care through Medicaid 1115 waivers and discouraging “puppy mill” high-volume breeders. The county asked the Legislature to increase anti-sex trafficking postings, expand existing laws that allow certain non-violent offenders to have misdemeanor convictions removed from their criminal record after a certain time.

The ATL adopts new logo to brand region’s transit efforts

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Board members for the region’s new transit authority plan to get down to business later this month when the 16-member governing panel holds its first meeting of 2019.

No agenda for that Jan. 24 meeting has been finalized yet, but the new board has already laid the groundwork to map out a future for transit in the region.

At its first meeting held in December, the Atlanta-Region Transit Link Authority — the ATL — adopted a logo design and established bylaws to begin work coordinating transit planning and funding for the 13 counties encompassing Metro Atlanta.

State Sen. Brandon Beach and State Rep. Kevin Tanner, co-authors of the legislation that created the ATL, attended and provided remarks at the inaugural meeting.

“This is an important first step in an exciting process to move our region forward,” said Beach, who chairs the

Senate Transportation Committee.

Tanner, who chairs the House Transportation Committee, said The ATL has the right people on its Board of Directors to foster collaboration across the region to drive connectivity and economic development.

The board includes six members appointed by state officials and 10 members elected by local delegations to represent 10 transit districts across the 13-county region. Meetings are held monthly in Suite 2200, 245 Peachtree Center Ave. N.E. in Atlanta.

He said the newly adopted logo will serve as a starting point for discussion and future decisions around regional transit branding.

“These decisions will be shaped by future conversations between the ATL board, regional partners and transit stakeholders,” Tomlinson said.

Per legislation, any newly acquired MARTA transit asset worth more than $250,000 must display the ATL brand.

The board will continue to work closely with all regional transit partners to determine how best to incorporate the ATL brand.

Mayor gives his take on potential 5G legislation

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The state Legislature will likely pave the way for telecom companies to roll out 5G technology when it convenes Jan. 14, a move that would have implications for Milton.

A 5G rollout bill presented in 2018 died in the waning days of the session, but local officials, including City Attorney Ken Jarrard, have stated another telecom bill is likely to go before state officials again this year.

“My sense is, it’s going to probably get done this session,” Jarrard told the City Council at its Dec. 3 meeting.

The 2018 bill gave telecom companies wider latitude to place 5G utilities in the city’s right of way. Milton, along with Johns Creek, Alpharetta, and Roswell, challenged the bill and urged lawmakers to reconsider the proposal which they said would threaten local control.

Under current regulations, a telecom provider must submit an application and present a plan that shows where it wants to place equipment or construct a utility pole, petition Milton on the location and meet the city’s regulations and ordinances.

If the state Legislature adopts a bill similar to the one proposed last year, the utility placement process would be expedited and municipalities would have far less control over where equipment could be located.

For Mayor Joe Lockwood, the impending technology expansion is desirable, but he would like to see Milton

and other cities have a vetting process to determine the best locations for telecom companies to add utilities.

“I think the technology would be a great addition for everybody, and I certainly understand why everyone Lockwood would want [5G] capability,” Lockwood said. “But from a city’s perspective, and in representing our citizens, we want to have as much control as possible, mainly for aesthetics.”

Lockwood said the 2018 bill’s allowances to telecom companies to construct utilities in municipal right of way would have given local governments little say in the utility’s rollout.

“I do understand from the state level you may want to have more across the board legislation so that certain cities wouldn’t be unreasonable,” he said.

However, he said he would like to see municipalities given some say in the location and look of small cell towers.

“I would like to see something where we would have some guidelines barring any extraneous circumstances that [telecom companies] would have to follow,” Lockwood said. “Especially as far as aesthetics and location. That, to me and for our citizens, would be the most important things.”

In a preemptive move, Alpharetta adopted revisions to its development code in anticipation of the state Legislature approving a 5G bill. Lockwood said the city is exploring similar measures.

That’s especially true for families who welcome the birth of a baby on the holiday.

Northside Hospital Atlanta, at 1000 Johnson Ferry Road N.E., delivered its first baby of the year at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1. Naya Christy Maalouf, weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces, was born to proud parents Pamela Mansour and Charbel Maalouf of Johns Creek.

Naya is the first child of Mansour and Maalouf. She was due Dec. 28, and her mother said that all she was thinking at midnight was that her baby was finally coming.

“We’d been waiting and waiting and waiting, so she’s finally ready to come,” Mansour said. “That’s all we were thinking.”

days after his due date. Josiah weighed 9 pounds 2 ounces at birth, and his parents, Denae and Gary, said it was an amazing surprise to have him ring in the New Year. The hospital did not release the family’s last name.

The first baby born at Northside Hospital Forsyth also came as a surprise to parents Satya Mukkavilla and Phani Peddis, considering he wasn’t due for nine more days. Their child was born at 2:35 p.m. weighing 8 pounds 2 oz.

“My water broke just after midnight, and I couldn’t really believe it since my due date wasn’t until Jan. 10,” Peddis said. “Having a New Year’s baby was the furthest from our minds. We thought we had at least nine more days to finalize our baby’s name, but we will decide on it for sure by tonight.”

WellStar North Fulton Hospital in Roswell did not see its first baby of 2019 until 5:17 p.m., when Veronica Pedraza gave birth to Matteo.

At 7 pounds 12 ounces, Matteo is the youngest of three siblings, along with 10-year-old Sophia and 7-year-old Leonardo.

“I was hoping for a Christmas baby,” his mother said. “I didn’t think it would take until New Years’ for him to come. I was surprised my baby was the first one of the year.”

Used to be, you could check a few news sources to assemble an accurate picture of the world.

But today, there are thousands of sources offering wildly different and distorted perspectives on current events.

Used to be, you could trust your eyes or your ears. But today, technology has advanced to the level that video and audio can be manipulated.

But how does one sort through the flotsam?

News is an important element in navigating life. It alerts you of danger, tracks your tax dollars, challenges your beliefs. It introduces you to people and ideas you should know.

With this in mind, I have developed a beginners’ approach to spotting information scams that pose as news.

First, familiarize yourself with hyperbole.

Hyperbole is any exaggeration not meant to be taken literally.

The best examples I’ve found in today’s media are in sports headlines, and that is where you should begin: “Urban Meyer getting crushed over pre-game comments.”

First of all, who cares?

Second, really? Is there anything a college football coach says that would get him “crushed?”

Third, go ahead and call up the story; you’ll learn it’s not much of a story.

Over the past week, I’ve seen five articles about five different sports figures who “are getting crushed” for something or other. Despite the “crushing,” all still have jobs paying them upwards of seven figures.

Another tipoff is the term “going viral.” If you see a headline declaring something is “going viral,” avoid it unless you have a taste for the mundane.

Most times, the remarks or videos that are “going viral” are as provocative as a straw mattress.

Here’s another important, yet oddly sinister, example of headlines that tip you off the story isn’t worth your time: “Five-star quarterback rejects major college offer.”

This is not so much inaccurate as it

Today, there are thousands of sources offering wildly different and distorted perspectives on current events. is irretrievably vague. It’s vague on purpose. It’s vague because the news service wants you to click on the story to find out which athlete rejected an offer from which school.

I see more and more of this sort of vagueness across most of the upstart news services. Used to be, copy editors were obligated to pack that information into the headline. Today, headlines are intentionally obscure.

Chances are, you could visit Sports Illustrated, ESPN or the Sporting News and get sound information in their headlines. No tricks, no gimmicks.

Time was, copy editors were encouraged to get as much information into a headline as possible — and do it concisely. The shorter, the better.

One light-hearted exercise prevalent in copy editing circles back then was to write the best, short headline in history about a real or fictional event — a headline that told the story but was short enough to fit across the top of the page in large, screaming letters.

The best I ever saw was: “Pope elopes.”

It’s sad to see sports writing fall prey to this ploy, manipulating readers into following a path to nowhere. Over the years, sports writers have provided some of the best prose in literature, clever, witty and full of Americana.

Witness one of the greatest sports headlines in history.

It appeared after a November 1968 football game between Harvard and Yale.

Both teams entered with 8-0 records, but Yale wasted no time proving its dominance, stifling the Crimson through all but the tiniest sliver of four quarters.

Trailing by 16 points with 42 seconds remaining, Harvard scored two touchdowns with 2-point conversions to end the contest in a tie.

Yale was crestfallen. Harvard was ecstatic.

The next day, some wordsmith on the copy desk at the Harvard Crimson newspaper summed it up best: “Harvard beats Yale, 29-29.”

Now that’s a headline!

Chattahoochee’s long ball proves deadly against Cambridge

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Chattahoochee used 18 three-pointers and strong play in the paint to down Cambridge, 98-84, in a pivotal Region 7-AAAAAA showdown Thursday night in Johns Creek.

The Cougars (13-3, 5-2) entered the contest sporting a top-10 ranking in Class 6A and were fresh off a bracket win in the hotly contested Tournament of Champions at Wheeler High last week.

Head coach Chris Short said his team in reveling in the hype and success, including a win over the Bears who have been dominant in region play the last two seasons.

“For the first time we have a target on our back,” Short said. “Now we are kind of in a different role. We wanted to make sure we came out and handled that role appropriately and played better.

And playing in these tough tournaments and against tough opponents every night has prepared us for this moment.”

Short was pleased with his team’s execution against Cambridge (10-6, 6-2) and their ability to light up the scoreboard with multiple scorers across the floor.

AJ White was deadly from beyond the arc with seven three-pointers for his game total of 25 points. Junior Cameron Sheffield led all players with 26 points, including five threes and strong drives to the net for layups.

“We have three or four guys that can shoot the three really well, and we have good bigs who run the floor,” Short said.

“And once the shooters start getting our closeouts, the bigs are getting open.”

As the Cougars continued to hit shots outside, it opened passing lanes to senior center Grant VanBeveren, who scored 25 points and was a rebounding force throughout his playing time.

“In the last month we’ve really tried to include [VanBeveren] in everything we’re trying to do and getting him touches in the paint,” Short said. “He’s such a good rebounder, he’s averaging a high double-double for us. He’s a veteran player, a good leader — he’s the full package.”

Short also credited junior guard Franklin Bailey, who has recently made the jump from the JV squad, for opening the floor for White and Sheffield and netting 18 points.

“All four of those guys are working so well off each other right now,” Short said.

Chattahoochee led 24-19 after a frantic first quarter before piling on the offense to outscore the Bears 32-17 in

Cambridge’s Sayler Thomas led the Bears to a 39-32 win over Chattahoochee, the Bears’ third straight region win. the second half behind 13 three-pointers in the first two periods.

The Cougars continued to build their lead in the third and opened a 70-44 margin.

Trailing by 22 entering the fourth, Cambridge began to press and chipped away at the lead with multiple Hooch turnovers but could not erase the sizeable deficit.

Senior Bryce Boutelle led the Bears with 23 points ahead of Kamar Robertson with 22. Sophomore guard Matthew Cleveland netted 21 points.

Girls Cambridge 39, Chattahoochee 32 Cambridge captured its third straight Region 7-AAAAAA win Thursday with a win over Chattahoochee on the road.

After a close first half, the Bears (7-9, 3-5) outscored Hooch 17-9 in the third quarter behind multiple 3-pointers. The Cougars chipped away at the lead in the final period, but Cambridge kept a double-digit margin for much of the final eight minutes.

Cambridge senior Saylor Thomas led the Bears with seven points in the second half and five rebounds. Audrey Smith and Kennedy Daniels each netted six points and four rebounds in the final two periods.

Cumming Playhouse welcomes new management

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — The new year has brought new ownership to the Cumming Playhouse.

Brian and Kelly Tam took over the Playhouse on Jan. 1, and renamed it Tam’s School Street Playhouse.

The couple has owned and operated the restaurant, Tam’s Backstage, located below the Playhouse for more than 10 years.

“It’s going to be a work in progress,” Kelly said. “It’ll be a bit of a transition.

We have our work cut out for us.”

The City of Cumming will continue to own the historic 1923 Cumming Schoolhouse, which houses Tam’s Backstage, the Historical Society of Cumming/ Forsyth County and now Tam’s School Street Playhouse. The Tams lease the space from the city.

“We’re going to do some painting, put up some more of the pictures that were in here that speak to the history of this schoolhouse and work with the Historical Society,” Brian said. “We think it’ll be a seamless transition. The restaurant and Playhouse go hand-in-hand. We realize so many people have an emotional attachment to this school and we’re proud to see it carry on.”

The Tams will pay a $5,500 monthly lease and take on the responsibilities of managing, staffing and cleaning the Playhouse.

“A lot of times with change comes energy,” Kelly said. “People do get excited about it. We have a tremendous respect for the city for starting this and bringing it to fruition. Linda Heard had a remarkable vision to make this happen.

The Cumming City Council voted last June to transfer management of the facility to the Tams. The city will still pay for maintenance, insurance and utilities.

In 2017, repairs and maintenance made up $21,531 of the expenses.

The city has been looking for ways to get out of the business of managing the

facility which has run up bills of about $149,000 a year, Mayor Troy Brumbalow said at an April of 2018 workshop. Since its creation in 2005, the Playhouse has lost almost $2 million.

The theater will now be called Tam’s School Street Playhouse. The facility’s website has also changed to schoolstreetplayhouse.com.

“School Street Playhouse gives us a specific location,” Brian said. “It was the first school in Forsyth County. We did

want to send a message that there was a change, but a subtle change. We thought this was an appropriate name for it.”

There are multiple theater companies that will contract with the Tams, similar to how the city procured shows.

“Most producers have been here before,” Brian said. “Our lease wasn’t finalized until late August so there were no contracts with anyone until our lease was signed. We moved rather quickly to sign contracts for 2019 in the last quarter of 2018.”

All 2019 shows will be posted on the website and patrons will still be able to order tickets online.

“We took a lot of input on the shows,” Brian said. “We wanted shows that have done well here before. We’re excited about the lineup. We think we will be able to fill the house with a lot of these shows.”

On the tentative 2019 line-up are well-known shows such as “Bonnie & Clyde,” “South Pacific,” “Mama Mia,” and “A Christmas Carol.” Also slated for this year are several shows focusing on Southern culture, including “A Southern Exposure,” “Derby Girls: The Musical,” and “Single Wide: The Musical.”

Among the concert lineup for 2019 are Banks & Shane, The Return: A Beatles Tribute, and “Remember Broadway,” a Broadway-themed variety show. Local favorites including “Georgia Senior Follies,” “Christmas Classics,” The Cumming Playhouse Singers, North Georgia Barbershop Singers, and Sounds of Sawnee Concert Band are all also slated to return in 2019.

The first show under the Tams’ leadership will be on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Where skill is concerned, Milton’s cup overfloweth in 2018. The talentrich team was led by a knowledgeable and determined coaching staff, the family-like atmosphere among the team was palpable on the sidelines and, even with their backs against the wall, the Eagles found ways to win this season.

But from my perspective, perhaps an overlooked aspect of their title is the Eagles’ ability to capitalize on their opportunities this season.

Milton began its season on the big stage, facing off against Archer in the Corky Kell Classic at Georgia State Stadium.

Despite computer projections and those from outsiders believing that top-five ranked Archer would have no trouble dispatching the Eagles, Milton came out swinging to open its 2018 campaign and downed the Tigers in its first Corky Kell appearance.

It was a win that seemingly set the tone for the season. The Eagles took advantage of their opportunity.

Three weeks later, Milton hosted the inaugural Freedom Bowl, and again answered the call by downing nationally-ranked Cardinal Gibbons.

Despite their two heartbreaking,

final-minute losses to Roswell and Parkview, the Eagles used the experience of the two contests to forge ahead, right the wrongs, and set up an undefeated run in Region 5-AAAAAAA, only the third region title in program history.

And week after week in the playoffs, Milton continued its opportunistic run.

The Eagles won the program’s first quarterfinals matchup against Hillgrove, charging back late with an incredible drive in the final minutes and a defensive stop to seal the win.

Then, with the opportunity to earn a berth in the state championship, the Eagles had a fantastic showing against powerhouse Lowndes.

And with the win, the stage was set for Milton to showcase its ability to shine in moments of prospect in the state finals.

The Eagles did just that, ending a 69-year wait for the program’s first title by defying the projections of many that Colquitt County had already earned the trophy.

Milton earned its opportunities in 2018, and at every turn, they took advantage. It is one of the greatest aspects of sports that allows us to seize a fleeting moment and live with the glory that follows. And each time opportunity knocked in 2018, the Eagles soared.

Winning the football state championship as an Athletic Director is like finally seeing the front of a tapestry — all the woven pieces throughout the process and season turned into this final GARY SYLVESTRI work of art, the state Milton High School Athletic Director championship!

As you may know, the back of a tapestry isn’t perfect and as beautiful as the front. That is how the process and season has been. All the knots and loose ends had to be tied up so the front can be a smooth work of art. Each week brought different ups and downs, big wins, hard losses, tough lessons, injuries and all the other highs and lows that go on behind the scenes of a season, and for us, a state championship run.

And isn’t everything better with family?

My family has been huge part of my coaching career over the past 25 years, and it makes winning the state championship that much more special. I stepped away from coaching football two years ago to focus on just being an athletic director. It took me a few years, but I learned I couldn’t do both very well! Looking back, it was a blessing in disguise.

Not only could I enjoy time with my family, but I was able to enjoy their success from the lens of a father and husband. Seeing the joy and emotion of my son Vinny (special teams coordinator and running backs coach), future son-in-law Jayce Ratliff (offensive line coach) and wife Alisha (Director of Football Operations) winning the state title made it that much more special!

My daughters Danielle and Domi-

nique were both at the game, along with two of our grandchildren, Enzo and Luca, to join in the celebration. My oldest son Nick, son-in-law Juan, brother Tony, cousin Anthony and mother-inlaw Jacquie watched it on GPB and NFHS, and my brother called me after the game in tears. I was already a proud athletic director and this magnified the feelings I was already experiencing by tenfold.

When Principal Brian Jones hired Adam Clack as the head coach, the goal was to elevate the football program to the next level. It first started with his staff and players answering the bell and getting us back in the playoffs.

Next, it was us building a schedule with games like the Corky Kell Classic, hosting/participating in the Freedom Bowl and playing state and nationally ranked teams in non-region games.

These strategic components gave our program the opportunity to elevate to the next level and be battle tested along the way.

With the template in place, it was coach Clack’s job, along with his staff and players, to stay true to the process and not worry about the final product.

The goal was never to win the football state championship, the goal was to get one percent better each day. The goal was not to play to the scoreboard, the goal was to play the next play. As coach Clack would say: “Play until they stop spotting the ball!”

Winning the state championship means the world to our program, school and community! It means that much because we all collectively ‘Mbraced’ in the vision, believed in the process and stayed true to what Milton stands for.

Football now joins the other celebrated Milton state champions, including girls lacrosse, boys basketball, baseball, co-ed competitive cheer, girls soccer, boys cross-country, girls/boys Golf and one act play.

Milton 21, Archer 19 (Corky Kell Classic, Aug. 17) Trailing 6-0, the Eagles took a dramatic lead on the final play on the second quarter with a touchdown pass from Jordan Yates to Holden Shaw, but Archer stayed within striking distance throughout the second half. Milton eventually opened a two-score lead with two rushing scores from Yates, but the Tigers cut the gap to 21-19 with just over three minutes left.

Milton’s defense sealed the win in the final minute by forcing an incompletion on Archer’s fourth-and-15 play from the Eagles’ 40-yard line.

Standout performer: Jordan Yates — 72 yards passing, 92 yards rushing, 2 total touchdowns.

Milton 37, Alpharetta 27 (Aug. 24) The Eagles began the night with a bang when quarterback Jordan Yates connected with Jordan Cox on an 80yard touchdown pass on the first offensive play of the game.

Alpharetta responded with an interception on Milton’s next drive and capitalized on a 41-yard touchdown pass.

The Eagles went back on top in the second quarter with three field goals from Hayden Hairston ahead of Alpharetta’s second touchdown, scored on fourth-and-goal.

Milton held a 2-point advantage at the half but opened the second frame with three unanswered touchdowns — including two passes from Yates and a Jordan Davis rushing score — to extend their lead to 37-14.

Alpharetta scored twice in the final four minutes, but Milton stymied the comeback bid by recovering both of the Raiders’ onside kicks.

Standout performer: Jordan Cox — Four receptions for 124 yards, two touchdowns.

Milton 42, Cardinal Gibbons 17 (Freedom Bowl, Aug. 31) Milton made the most of hosting the inaugural Freedom Bowl and blasted Florida’s Cardinal Gibbons, one of the top-ranked teams in the nation, in front of the Eagle faithful.

The Eagles began their scoring with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, and two rushing scores from Joshua Edwards put the game at 28-10 in the third quarter.

Edwards continued his scoring later in the quarter with another touchdown rush as the Eagles’ defense held Cardinal Gibbons to a single score midway through the period.

Standout performer: Josh Edwards — 15 rushes for 79 yards, four touchdowns.

Roswell 22, Milton 20 (Sept. 14) Roswell opened a 10-0 lead on a field goal and a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown. However, Milton scored three unanswered touchdowns to build a 20-10 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Roswell got back on the board with a touchdown with five minutes left and stopped Milton’s ensuing possession to set up a game-winning drive.

Roswell drove inside the red zone and with just five seconds remaining, quarterback Ethan Roberts connected with Kamonty Jett on a 7-yard touchdown pass.

Milton did find the end zone on a wild hook and ladder play on the ensuing kickoff, but one of the laterals during the play was deemed a forward pass, allowing Roswell to escape with the win. It was the first time the teams had squared off with undefeated records in a non-reg-

ular season opening game since 1993.

Standout performer: Joseph Charleston — 12 total tackles.

Parkview 37, Milton 35 (Sept. 21) Jordan Yates threw touchdown passes to Joseph Charleston and Nasier Currie-Sudler in the first half, but Parkview led 30-13 at the half.

Milton chipped away at the Panthers’ lead to cut the gap to 37-29 late in the fourth with two touchdown rushes from Josh Edwards.

After a goal-line stand, Parkview fumbled on a field goal attempt and Milton’s Syaire Waters scooped the ball and returned it for a touchdown to put their deficit at just two points. However, Milton did not convert its two-point play, and Parkview recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Standout performer: Josh Edwards — 18 rushes for 160 yards, two touchdowns.

Milton 35, South Forsyth 21 (Oct. 12) Milton led 6-0 after a low-scoring first half, but the Eagles found an offensive rhythm and took advantage of South turnovers in the second half.

South Forsyth capitalized on a Milton fumble early in the third quarter to take its only lead of the game. The Eagles responded with 29 unanswered points behind three touchdown passes from quarterback Jordan Yates and a Josh Edwards rushing score to build a 35-7 lead early in the fourth.

While South found pay dirt twice in the final period, Milton’s margin was too great to overcome.

Standout performer: Jordan Yates — 251 yards passing, 22 yards rushing, three total touchdowns.

Milton 41, West Forsyth 0 (Oct. 5) Milton 30, Forsyth Central 3 (Oct. 19) Milton’s defense held West Forsyth to under 150 yards of total offense while quarterback Jordan Yates compiled four touchdowns to put the Eagles at 1-0 in region play.

Milton’s Jordan Davis returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown and the Eagles blocked a West punt and recovered the loose ball in the end zone to open an early 13-0 lead.

Yates linked with Dylan Leonard, the first of their two connections for touchdowns, to put the Eagles ahead 20-0.

Yates added rushing scores in the second and third quarter. The quarterback

The Eagles’ special teams put Milton on the board first with a safety on a Forsyth Central punt. A 9-yard touchdown rush from Josh Edwards and a touchdown connection from quarterback Jordan Yates to Dylan Leonard gave Milton a 16-0 halftime lead.

Yates threw two more touchdown passes in the second half to Dylan Leonard and Joseph Charleston. Milton’s defense held the Bulldogs to a lone field goal late in the fourth quarter.

Standout performer: Dylan Leonard — Five receptions for 87 yards, two touchdowns.

Milton 57, Lambert 7 (Oct. 26) Milton made history with a win over Lambert to secure the program’s third region championship in front of its home crowd. The Eagles’ 5-AAAAAAA title was their first region championship since 2014.

Milton was led by a six-touchdown performance from quarterback Jordan Yates who had over 300 total offensive yards. Yates had four rushing scores and connected with Holden Shaw and Ahmad Junearick-Echols on touchdown throws.

The Eagles’ defense forced multiple turnovers and a safety in the first quarter to open a 30-0 lead and cruised to the win, their fourth-straight.

Standout performer: Jordan Yates — 150 yards passing, 170 yards rushing, six total touchdowns.

Milton 49, North Forsyth 23 (Nov. 2) Milton put an exclamation point on their region run by compiling a 5-0 record against its Forsyth County foes with a win over North Forsyth.

The Eagles used Josh Edwards touchdown rushes of 13 and 58 yards to open a 14-3 lead. North scored to cut the margin to 14-10, but Milton let its big man, highly-recruited offensive lineman Paul Tchio, rush in from 1 yard out to give Milton a 21-10 lead.

Nasier Currie-Sudler intercepted a North pass and went end zone to end zone for a 102-yard return for a touchdown just before half.

Edwards found pay dirt for a third time with an 89-yard rushing score, Yates connected with Joseph Charleston for a touchdown, and Ahmad Echols had a 70-yard score to allow Milton to secure its 5-0 region record.

Standout performer: Josh Edwards — 15 rushes for 202 yards, three touchdowns.

Milton 28, South Gwinnett 19 (Nov. 9) Milton earned its second straight trip to the second round with the Eagles’ win over South Gwinnett. Milton trailed at the half but outscored the Comets 21-7 in the second half.

The Comets struck first midway through the first quarter with a 40-yard touchdown pass, but a missed PAT proved pivotal later in the game.

Milton took a 7-6 lead on their ensuing drive with a touchdown rush from quarterback Jordan Yates. South Gwinnett reclaimed the lead with a touchdown late in the second quarter.

The Eagles took the lead with Yates’ second rushing score early in the third, then found further separation with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Yates to Joseph Charleston midway through the fourth.

MILTON HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP South Gwinnett scored with under three minutes remaining but were unable to convert their 2-point conversion to keep Milton ahead, 21-19.

Yates scored his fourth touchdown of the game and iced the contest with a 70-yard rush on Milton’s next offensive possession.

Standout performer: Jack Rhodes — 12 total tackles, 56-yard kickoff return.

Milton 24, Mill Creek 3 (Nov. 16) Milton’s defense held the Hawks’ rushing attack to 117 yards, around half of their average yardage per game, while quarterback Jordan Yates threw two touchdowns to Dylan Leonard to lead the Eagles’ offensive charge.

Leonard hauled in a 19-yard touchdown on the Eagles’ opening drive before Mill Creek cut the lead with a 31-yard field goal late in the period.

With the defensive battle continuing, the Eagles settled for a 39-yard field goal from Hayden Hairston before the half after a Yates rushing score was called back on a penalty.

Milton extended its lead to 17-3 on the second play of the fourth quarter.

Though Milton was held to negative yards rushing on the night, Josh Edwards had a 25-yard rush to set up firstand-goal and scored from 1 yard out on the next play.

The Eagles’ Jordan Davis recovered a fumble midway through the quarter, the only turnover of the game, to set up Milton in Mill Creek territory. Looking to ice the game, Yates connected with Leonard on a 40-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-11.

Milton 20, Hillgrove 19 (Nov. 23) Milton downed Hillgrove to earn the program’s first semifinals win.

Milton struck pay dirt on its opening possession with a touchdown rush from Josh Edwards, but Hillgrove scored two unanswered touchdowns to take a 13-7 lead into the half.

Hillgrove added a field goal to take a 16-7 lead in the third quarter.

Milton quarterback Jordan Yates cut the lead the 16-14 late in the quarter with a long rush to set up his 5-yard touchdown run.

The Hawks drove inside the Milton 10-yard line on their ensuing possession, but the Eagles’ defense forced another field goal to put the score at 19-14 early in the fourth.

Milton turned the ball over on downs on their next offensive possession but forced a Hillgrove punt with five minutes remaining to go back on offense deep in their own territory.

eventual game-winning score, capped off by a spirited 23-yard run from Edwards who ran over defenders and evaded multiple tacklers on his way to the end zone.

Hillgrove looked to go back on top with two minutes remaining and moved the ball quickly into Milton territory.

However, two incompletions set up fourth-and-9 with the game on the line.

Milton’s Allan Walker came up with a sack to force the turnover on downs, but the drama was not quite over.

Milton came centimeters away from a first down on its third-and-1 run, setting up a critical fourth down attempt. Yates took the shotgun snap and leaped over the line to secure Milton’s first-ever trip to the fourth round.

Milton 28, Lowndes 17 (Nov. 30) Milton earned its first trip to a state championship in 69 years of play by downing perennial powerhouse Lowndes 28-17 at Denmark High School.

The Eagles built a 21-0 lead in the first half and held off an attempted Viking comeback to advance to the Class 7A state finals.

Milton capitalized on a fumble by the Lowndes punter with quarterback Jordan Yates scoring the first of his three touchdowns of the night with a 6-yard run.

Yates hit Dylan Leonard on a 49-yard touchdown on the Eagles’ next offensive possession, and a 1-yard rushing score from Josh Edwards put the gap at 21-0 in the second quarter.

Lowndes’ run-heavy offense was stymied by an impressive performance from Milton’s defense, but the Vikings found the scoreboard with a rushing touchdown just before the half.

The Vikings intercepted Yates on the opening drive of the third quarter and cut the lead to 21-14 with a short rushing score.

Lowndes added a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, but Milton responded with an 80-yard touchdown drive capped off by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Yates to Holden Shaw.

Milton 14, Colquitt County 13 (Dec. 12) Colquitt County drove inside the Milton 10-yard line on their opening possession, but the Eagles stuck with their mantra of owning the red zone and got an interception from Steven Michaels on

the goal line. The Eagles held Colquitt to a touchdown and two field goals in five trips to the red zone during the contest.

Milton was unable to take advantage of Michaels’ pick and turned the ball over five plays later with a fumble following a reception from Jack Nickel.

Colquitt began their ensuing drive inside the red zone, but was held to a 30-yard field goal.

Milton responded with a 66-yard touchdown connection from Yates to Jordan Cox who found separation in single coverage and streaked down the sideline and into the end zone.

The Eagles looked to add to their 7-3 lead with a 34-yard field goal from Hayden Hairston. However, Colquitt brought the rush and blocked the attempt. The Packers then used their rushing attack to drive 61-yards, capped off by a 10-yard rushing score.

Milton’s special teams retaliated by blocking Colquitt’s field goal attempt in the final minute of the second half to keep the score at 10-7 at the break.

The Eagles opened the second half with a 12-play drive, but Hayden Hairston’s field goal attempt bounced off the upright.

Milton came back with another long drive, converting two fourth downs and a third down to set up a scoring rush from Josh Edwards to give the Eagles a 14-10 lead.

Colquitt drove inside the red zone on their ensuing possession but had to settle for another field goal to cut the lead to 14-13.

The Packers were back on the ball with just over three minutes remaining looking for the go-ahead score.

Colquitt crossed midfield but were put into a third and long situation after an Allen Walker sack. On fourth-and-13, the Packers completed pass fell short of the sticks, turning the ball over to Milton who ran out the clock to end the program’s 69year wait for a state title trophy.

Meet my friends: Fannie and Freddie Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are household names.

But as I go through the loan process with my clients, I’ve found that most of you don’t have a very clear understanding of their role in the lending Geoff smith Assurance Financial, process and are fasgsmith@lendtheway.com cinated to learn what that role is.

In short, they take a huge portion of the risk out of giving a home loan, so us banks can feel comfortable offering interest rates that more people can afford. Both Fannie and Freddie — as well as the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), all in their own way, basically say that if us banks underwrite our loans according to their guidelines, they agree to cover us in one way or another should the borrower stop making payments. For Fannie and Freddie, that means buying the loan from us. For FHA and VA, that includes a payout using some form of insurance.

Before any of those institutions existed, banks were offering rates of well over 20 percent and requiring as much as 50 percent down payment.

These institutions were put into play to encourage us to offer more favorable terms and encourage homeownership — which most people agree is good for local economies.

One of the great things about these organizations is they establish a standardized set of guidelines. This means that if a loan is a Fannie Mae, or conventional, loan, other banks know what criteria had to be met for the loan to qualify. Other banks also understand that if a bank is caught calling a loan a Fannie Mae loan, but then Fannie Mae proves them wrong during an audit of the loan, the bank can lose its ability to offer Fannie Mae loans. A lot have over

This enables banks to more easily buy and sell them to each other. This reduces the risk on the loan even more by reducing the financial risk of the bank that just paid out the $350,000, or whatever the loan size was. So if you are a bank and you did 10 mortgages last month and doled out $2 million, it is a relief to know that if you needed to, you could sell them if you needed to build back your cash reserves.

Before the downturn, banks’ underwriting practices had fallen apart. Fannie, Freddie and the others weren’t doing a good job of auditing those loans, which were being bought and sold in their name, but they were not underwritten according to their guidelines.

Since then, they have tightened up their requirements to better verify that the information a borrower gives his or her lender is accurate. There have been a lot of complaints that industry guidelines have made it too hard for people to qualify. That may be up for debate, but the guidelines themselves allow for borrowers to devote 45 percent or more of their income to debt repayments and only put 5 percent down – 3 percent for first-time homebuyers. FHA allows up to 57 percent of income to go toward debt repayments with credit scores lower than 600 to qualify.

The frustration most people feel doesn’t necessarily have to do with the qualification guidelines, it has to do with the paperwork that Fannie and

Freddie require to verify the borrower’s income and source of down payment.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of unscrupulous players out there and they spoil it for the rest of us. And since this isn’t Mayberry, Fannie and Freddie have to write their guidelines to a national audience in a way that filters out those who do not qualify as well as those that will try to game the system.

So these loans can be a bit of a hassle from a paperwork standpoint. The tradeoff is the low rates. We at Assurance Financial do offer portfolio loans that are not backed by a major institution like Fannie and Freddie, but it is mostly for small business owners and those with a recent credit event who can’t qualify for an institutional loan.

And the rates are certainly higher.

So these institutional loans are fantastic and we are lucky to have them.

Your best bet is to find a loan officer who understands the process and can clearly relay what is needed to you.

If you are looking to sell your small business, it is not an overnight proposition.

Dr. Taylor recipient of ‘Best of’ awards in 2018 I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win to ask him about his recent success.

As we sit in the bright, clean, welcoming waiting room of Premier Dermatology, Dr. Taylor is holding his newborn son, his third boy, only 15 days old. He apologizes for the squeaks of the sleeping baby and smiles apologizing when those squeaks interrupt our interview. After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown.

Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and Dr. Brent surgical ability are well Taylor established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician.

Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Fulton! As a new practice, it is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone winning Best Vein Specialist 2 years in a row. To what do you attribute to your success?

Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much!

You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade.

I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons.

Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me.

I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patient-centered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them. Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated into improved processes within my own practice.

But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff! Given that

we are a small practice with only 7 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients. We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We’ve been open 18 months now and are constantly trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence.

Is there something you feel sets yourself apart from the other physicians in the area?

Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients.

(With a laugh) Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care.

And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule.

Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred out to other specialists, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and board-certified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with the ability to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Dr. Taylor: I really just want to say thank you very much! Thank you to our staff: you are valued and wonderful and we wouldn’t be continuing to excel without each and every one of you! Also thank you so very much to all of our patients and our community! Your confidence and support is greatly appreciated and rewarding. Benefits of the well woman exam By: Dr. Christy Kenkel, Modern OBGYN It’s that time again, time for the well woman exam. The anticipation of this event may not always make our hearts flutter with glee, but this doctor’s visit can be one of the most important days of the year. In truth, well woman exams Dr. kenkel are vital to our health because they help detect problems that can become larger, perhaps dangerous burdens if they go unchecked. A well woman exam, at its least, helps us maintain healthy, vibrant lives, and at its most, can be life-saving.

A well woman exam generally consists of pelvic and clinical breast exams in addition to discussing lifestyle habits, safe sexual practices, contraception options, and recommended screening exams and vaccinations that vary based on age, lifestyle habits, and genetic risk factors. Here, I’ll touch on the recommended screening exams you may encounter at your well woman exam.

For sexually active women under the age of 25, yearly STI testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis is recommended. This protects future fertility, protects against ectopic pregnancy, and prevents the spread of dangerous diseases. Testing in ages over 25 is certainly recommended if there are symptoms of infection or high-risk sexual practices.

Between the ages of 21-65 (with some exceptions after 65), regular pap smears are recommended. Roughly 80% of women have been exposed to high risk HPV by the age

Importantly, virtually all cases of cervical cancer are caused by the high risk HPV. Pap smears check for the presence of high risk HPV, and to see if cervical cells exhibit abnormalities caused by this virus. If there are advanced cervical cell abnormalities, outpatient procedures can be performed to remove the portion of affected tissue at risk for morphing into cancer. Without first having a pap smear, these cell changes would be missed, and a patient could be at risk for cervical cancer, a dead-

ly disease. The HPV vaccines are strongly recommended in hopes of alleviating the burden this virus creates.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and is either the most common or second most common cause of death from cancer among women of most races. Screening recommendations vary based on which guidelines are followed. The American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology recommends yearly clinical breast exams and mammograms between the ages of 40-74. The frequency of screening tests can be increased depending on a patient’s risk factors. Referrals for mammograms and breast imaging can be made at the annual well woman exam.

Even if we as patients feel anxious or burdened by the idea of visiting the gynecologist for our well woman exam, let us remember that ultimately it enables us to enjoy vibrant lives by keeping our bodies safe. As gynecologists, it is our commitment to help you achieve that.
