MILTON, Ga. — Police are searching for a woman suspected of stealing a Milton Target employee’s credit cards and cell phone while the employee tried on clothes after clocking out.

The store employee said after her shift ended on Sept. 9, she decided to shop for clothes before leaving the store. She left the fitting room to select another size from the sales floor, but when she returned, she found another woman in the fitting room with her potential purchases and her personal belongings, including

her purse.

The employee asked the woman if she could have her things, but the suspect threw the clothes over the fitting room door. At this time, the employee noticed her purse, which had been in the fitting room when she left, was on a nearby desk.

The victim said she did not open her purse after picking it up from the desk and continued to shop for 15 to 20 minutes. When she reached the checkout line, she discovered her wallet and Sam-

Thieves make off with 30 car batteries MILTON, Ga. — Two men are suspected of stealing 30 used car batteries from the Milton Walmart after midnight on Sept. 11.

Police received a call that afternoon regarding the theft. An employee with the store said the batteries were stolen from the “battery cage” around 1:30 a.m. and that the cage was pried open without disturbing the lock.

Surveillance footage showed a dark Honda Accord pass in front of the building to the rear. Two men are seen walking up to the battery storage area before one of the suspects backs the car up to the cage. Footage, which did not show the rear of the car or the cage, showed the vehicle driving off “shortly after.”

According to the report, both men were wearing white shorts and a black shirt. One of the suspects appears to be black while the other was either white or Hispanic.

Cameras did reveal the Accord’s license plate, which is owned by a woman from Norcross.

MILTON, Ga. — Two separate incidents of identity fraud under similar circumstances occurred to neighbors in Milton.

On Sept. 11, police responded to two separate cases of identity fraud.

In both instances, the victim’s identity was used to issue credit cards, and the thieves possibly had knowledge of when the cards would be delivered by gaining access to the victims’ USPS Informed Delivery service.

In one case, a woman received an email that eight pieces of mail would be delivered to her home on Sept. 5, including three credit cards.

The woman never received the mail.

The next day, she called her credit card company to inquire why she was receiving new credit cards.

An employee told the woman her husband had requested the cards. The husband had made no such request.

The woman canceled the cards before they were used, but a neighbor was not so lucky.

On Sept. 4, the second victim received a letter from her local post office stating someone attempted to access her Informed Delivery account.

The USPS said her account had been established in her name on Aug. 28, but she was unable to access the ac-

The employee said she briefly saw the suspect and described her as a “dark-skinned female” between 30- and 60-years old wearing a green T-shirt and an unknown color ball cap.

The victim said she cancelled all the credit cards immediately, and officers advised her to closely monitor her credit to detect any fraudulent activity.

Police were in the process of obtaining security footage at the time of the report. count and did not recognize the username on the letter she received.

The woman’s bank contacted her on Sept. 10 for suspicious activity on her account.

Two weeks earlier, someone using her identity had requested new credit cards be delivered the victim’s home address.

On Sept. 10, a $4,500 cash advance was used on the card in Forest Park. The other card fraudulently issued was charged for a total of $5,500 in Morrow.

The second victim informed the credit card companies of the fraud and an investigation has begun.

Police investigate armed robbery at Subway

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta police are investigating an armed robbery that took place Sept. 5 at the subway on Crabapple Road.

An employee of the shop told police that a man came up to the counter at 9:50 p.m. and ordered a sandwich.

While the employee was making the sandwich, the man pushed a white bag onto the counter and lifted his shirt, showing a gun in his waistband.

The man then told the employee to “remain calm” and put cash from the cash register in the bag.

The employee put $356 in cash in the bag, and also hit a panic alarm, alerting police.

Officers arrived with a K-9 unit, but the dog was unable to track the man’s scent past the parking lot.

The suspect was described as a white man with some stubble, 5 foot, 10 inches tall, wearing a black and white jacket, gray baseball cap and plastic glasses.

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to contact the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety at 678297-6300.

Milton takes first look at 2019 budget

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton officials say they are pleased with the first draft of a balanced fiscal year 2019 budget despite challenges in getting it all to work.

Milton gave the first presentation of its proposed budget at the Sept. 10 City Council meeting.

This budget marks the first since Milton chose to fund its operations using revenues generated from the prior year instead of anticipating revenues for the upcoming year.

That part is tricky enough, but it also meant ensuring it had enough money to fund its current year budget while switching over to the new system.

Milton’s fiscal year runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30.

The proposed general fund budget calls for $29.2 million in spending, a 3.8 percent increase over 2018.

Maintenance & Operation expenses are proposed to increase by $1.186 million.

That includes a large investment in updating the city’s information technology equipment, a projected 10 percent increase in healthcare costs for city employees and a 3 percent market increase

Just over half of the M&O expenditures are new initiatives, including staff positions as the city continues to grow.

Milton has budgeted for specialists in public relations, parks and recreation, revenue, records and for the city’s court.

Positions for two part-time civilian public safety officers to direct traffic at problem areas during the morning and evening rush hour were also budgeted.

Other new initiatives include updates to in-car cameras on police vehicles and 30 body cameras for officers, updates to radio equipment for the police and public works departments and an electronic voting system for the City Council

City Manager Steve Krokoff said while the budget shows an increase in expenses, $4.5 million has been allocated to transfer to the city’s 2018 fund balance to make up for the city not collecting a year’s worth of property taxes while it switched to its current budgeting system.

“We are paying back the tax revenue we didn’t get,” Krokoff said at the Sept.

10 meeting. “It makes it appear as if we are spending more, but the reality is we’re really not.”

Finance Director Bernadette Harvill said the city was legally required to replenish the funds in three years, but the

city chose to delay capital improvement projects to replace the funds in one year.

The city has allocated nearly $1.2 million for capital projects, including IT infrastructure improvements, finance software replacement, a Fire Department battalion vehicle and pedestrian improvements in downtown Crabapple.

According to Krokoff, a 3.8 percent increase in revenues is a result of a spike in the collection of real property taxes, local option sales taxes and occupation taxes.

Revenues generated from taxes on real property, personal property, sales and “a handful” of other categories comprise around 94 percent of Milton’s fiscal 2019 revenues. That rate is much higher than many North Fulton cities, Krokoff said.

The full drafted budget can be viewed at cityofmiltonga.us. Harvill said the thorough budget book was quite an undertaking for city staff, but they were “happy to go the extra mile.”

“It was a great process,” Harvill said.

“The budget book was a big initiative to give residents something clear and understandable.”

Milton could adopt the budget at its next regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 24.

Milton adopts truck routes

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton took a step at its Sept. 10 City Council meeting to help alleviate traffic congestion, protect Milton’s roads and provide designated, safe routes for large commercial vehicles by adopting truck routes in the city limits.

Five of the six designated routes are state roads and all connect with the truck thoroughfares of neighboring cities and Forsyth County.

The adopted truck routes include: Arnold Mill Road from the Cherokee County border to 0.15 miles south of Green Road Birmingham Highway from city limits to the Cherokee County border Ga. 9 from the Alpharetta city limits to the Forsyth County border Deerfield Parkway from Windward Parkway to Ga. 9 (Cumming Highway) Morris Road from Deerfield Parkway to McGinnis Ferry Road McGinnis Ferry Road from Morris Road to the Alpharetta border Trucks weighing over 36,000 pounds or over 30 feet in length, with the exception of buses or other vehicles designed to primarily carry passengers, will be

required to use the truck routes.

Trucks can use non-designated routes if making a local delivery or if the vehicle is housed along other roads.

However, the ordinance requires the most direct course be taken from the truck route to the destination.

Milton Police Chief Rich Austin said signs will be placed along the routes, and the city will conduct a campaign to inform truck drivers and their companies regarding the ordinance. A 45-day grace period will also be given after implementation of the ordinance, Austin added.

Though Milton adopted a truck route ordinance in 2007, the regulation passed last week was the first to identify specific roadways for truck traffic.

Austin said truckers often use Milton’s roads as a cut-through. Transportation Engineer Sara Leaders said Batesville Road, Birmingham Road, Hopewell Road and Mayfield Road saw the most pass-through traffic in a recent traffic survey.

Those thoroughfares, along with Bethany Road, New Providence Road, Providence Road, Freemanville Road and Bethany Bend, had the highest percentage of truck traffic.

Fulton Schools to stay the course on redistricting process ‘Tweaks’ for clarity the only change moving forward

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com After a lengthy review of the process used to realign school attendance zones, the Fulton School System has determined it will maintain the existing policy it has used for nearly 20 years, with a few tweaks for clarity.

The decision to hold to the current course was based on input received from two lightly attended redistricting information meetings held last spring in both South and North Fulton. The forums were intended to explain the redistricting process and gather community comment.

An online survey was also available for additional comment.

Only 23 people attended the public meetings, and approximately 200 comments were submitted online, noted Yngrid Huff-Jones, chief planner for Fulton Schools.

“Based on the feedback we received, parents’ overwhelming concerns were those based on a lack of knowledge and understanding of the current process, rather than the policy itself,” Huff-Jones said.

She noted the redistricting policy has proven successful since 2000 in more than 30+ school redistrictings countywide. The district does acknowledge there needs to be more information provided to the community prior to redistricting.

“To help parents understand the process more clearly, staff has recommended clarifying language in the redistricting procedure as well as adding an informational meeting before the process starts,” Huff-Jones said.

She noted the pre-session will be called “Redistricting 101- A Beginners Course” and will typically occur one month prior.

“The intent is to allay concerns about the process and to clearly define the process used in changing attendance boundaries,” Huff-Jones said.

Moving forward, she said a few other tools will be implemented to increase community understanding of the redistricting process.

A video detailing the process will be developed, and Fulton planning staff will attend board member community meetings prior to any future redistrictings to answer questions.

Huff-Jones noted the redistricting policy has proven successful since 2000 in more than 30+ school redistrictings countywide. The district does acknowledge there needs to be more information provided to the community prior to redistricting.

While longtime parents of students in North Fulton schools are familiar with attendance zone adjustments, new parents will have fewer opportunities to go through the process.

Huff-Jones said there are no planned rezonings in North Fulton at this time, including any tweaks of boundaries.

Redistricting generally occurs when new high schools come on line, or when population changes impact enrollment.

The only high school planned in North Fulton in the next five years is the STEM high school in downtown Alpharetta.

That school will have open boundaries which will not impact existing attendance zones.

Redistrictings are directed by the Fulton Schools Board, using board-approved criteria.

Primary Criteria Geographic proximity – Distance traveled using available routes of transportation.

Instructional capacity – Number of students who can be accommodated at the school.

Projected enrollment – Number of students assigned to a school, taking into account the future projected enrollment.

Secondary Criteria Used if primary criteria indicate more than one option, options are evaluated on the basis of: Traffic patterns Previous rezoning Special programs in place that require additional space over and above a regular classroom School feeder alignment for elementary, middle and high school attendance boundaries

Roswell scores in final seconds to down bitter rivals Milton

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Rivalries can be founded on many factors, including proximity, the familiarity of two teams slugging it out for decades or a history of thrilling wins and heartbreaking losses. The Milton and Roswell rivalry includes all those factors, but Friday night’s contest will undoubtedly continue the love to hate sentiment between the schools.

Roswell erased a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter and scored with just five seconds remaining to down their bitter foes in electrifying fashion at Milton.

The Hornets trailed 20-16 with just over two minutes remaining when their defense stopped the Eagles on a thirdand-long in Milton territory to force a punt. The ensuing kick sailed out of bounds just 14 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, setting up the Hornets with a short field and two timeouts in their pocket.

Roswell drove inside the red zone over the next minute but faced a fourthand-4 to keep their comeback hopes alive. Going for the throat, Roswell threw a backward pass to Ryan Pike who then teed up a pass to John Copenhaver in the end zone. The throw fell incomplete, but a pass interference call against Milton gave the Hornets a fresh set of downs.

Two plays later, quarterback Ethan Roberts connected with running back Kamonty Jett inside the 5-yard line. Jett broke a tackle, then broke the hearts of the Milton faithful by scampering into pay dirt with just five ticks remaining on the clock.

But, the drama was not over. After a squib quick gave Milton three seconds to work, the Eagles ran a hook and ladder play.

Dylan Leonard caught the pass and quickly threw a lateral. After another lateral, quarterback Jordan Yates was back in possession and began rushing down the sideline. As he crossed midfield and saw a swarm of Hornets approaching, Centennial 69, Cambridge 35 Centennial set a program record for most points scored in a game with an offensive showcase and 69 points Friday night against Region 7-AAAAAA opponent Cambridge.

The Knights scored 35 points in the first half, and Cal Dickie rushed for four touchdowns.

The victory gives Centennial a 2-0 record to start their region schedule.

Their last region loss came in the region opener against Alpharetta last season.

“Give all the credit to our kids,” head coach Matt Kemper said. “They got up, they got behind, we looked great and we looked terrible at times. But they believed what we told them all week was in order to come out here and be a giant killer, there is a recipe for success. You have to play relentless defense, you have pharetta on Sept. 28.

Special teams play was also crucial for Milton. Jack Rhodes blocked a Roswell punt in the end zone, setting up an 11-yard rushing score from Josh Edwards.

The final ingredient for Kemper’s recipe to success came with the Hornets taking advantage of offensive chances late in the game.

Milton led 20-10 with nine minutes remaining, but Roswell responded with an 11-play, 78-yard drive capped off by a 17-yard pass from Roberts to Jeremy Slaughter.

And with under two minutes left, the Hornets offense took its opportunity to remain unbeaten (4-0) this season with their last second touchdown. Friday’s contest marked the first since 1993 that Milton and Roswell both entered their rivalry game undefeated when not playing in season openers.

Roswell appears to have returned to its winning ways after its disappointing, 3-8 record last year, the first under Kemper.

“I have been doing this for 26 years and that was the most miserable [season] I’ve had as a coach,” Kemper said.

The Roswell head coach said he inherited a program that had gone 28-2 in its prior two seasons, and with their unbelievable record, it was difficult to adjust the team to his manner of coach-

“I told our guys that big wins early in the season don’t make our season, and neither do losses,” Milton coach Adam Clack said. “I tip my hat to coach Kemper because his guys were ready to rock and roll and they came in with a point to prove. I definitely wouldn’t take credit away from them, but we clearly didn’t play our best ballgame.”

Milton’s offense moved the ball effectively but lacked the explosiveness it had in its first three games. While the Eagles defense kept Roswell mostly at bay, they were unable to contain the Hornets’ comeback in the final period.

“Our defense played tremendous for three quarters, but we had trouble getting [Roswell] off the field,” Clack said.

“But the fact we dug ourselves into a 10-point hole, then built a 10-point lead, we had to expend so much energy to get to that point we weren’t able to answer the bell down the stretch.”

Clack said there is still much to be gained from the experience.

“Something I truly believe is that adversity doesn’t make you better, it only makes you better if you learn the lesson from it,” he said. “If we do that, we’ll be a better football team because of it.”

It takes a village… and good transit

One of the best parts of being a journalist is getting to meet many different types of people from all walks of life. I love getting to hear why people are passionate about their Kathleen Sturgeon community, their family’s history and Editor kathleen@appenmediagroup.com how they’re working to make their hometown a better place.

But with that comes the gloomy stories of houses being torn down due to new development or homeless children who stuff food into their pockets during school lunches to bring home to their younger siblings.

That latter story is one I heard last week while I was covering a fence installation at Fill Ministries in north Forsyth. Fill Ministries grows the food used by Meals by Grace which feeds thousands of hungry kids in our community ever year.

It’s a noble effort, and I enjoyed seeing the community rally around Fill Ministries Founder Stephen Daniels and his farm to help future families.

But that’s not the story that stuck out to me the most.

Years ago, Daniels and his wife were at church one Sunday giving out bags of food to the hungry. He felt good about his efforts until the end of the event when plenty of bags were left. At first, Daniels said he was shocked to see all this food sitting there not being picked up.

He quickly learned the real reason was so many people in the community don’t have reliable transportation.

These are people who truly need just a little bit of help in the form of food or other necessities who are unable to even reach the help being offered.

That’s what inspired Daniels to create Fill Ministries.

His story got me thinking. When will we decide as a community enough is enough?

I’ve lived in Alpharetta basically my entire life and I’ve been involved as a professional journalist for nearly four years, so I’ve heard plenty of pros and cons regarding MARTA moving north.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, most of the anti-transit rhetoric is frankly ridiculous.

I read hundreds of police reports every week from Forsyth County and I consistently see the same issues regarding burglaries, fights and domestic violence.

I hate to break it to you, but crime is already here. With the community growing bigger by the day, it is inevitable “bad people” will come, too. But there have always been people looking to do harm. Giving them access to a station won’t increase the chances you see someone stealing a big screen TV onto a MARTA train. For starters, where would they even hide it?

But that shouldn’t deter lawmakers from making a far larger scope of people have an easier and better life.

It’s time we start to see how much potential our area and its people have and let them show it by giving them the option of better transit.

Maybe then we won’t have to create charities to deliver basic necessities to hungry kids because we’re “too scared” of what reliable transportation will bring.

Simulation teaches faith leaders lessons on poverty

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Tired, stressed, hungry, frustrated, baffled.

Participants in a two-hour simulation to examine poverty went through them all.

The exercise, organized by North Fulton Community Charities, was designed to give local religious leaders an idea of life for low-income families.

The North Fulton Interfaith Roundtable, a meeting of religious leaders from across the area, participated in the simulation Sept. 13 at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church. Each participant was assigned a new identity and “family.”

Each of seven families had its own set of challenges.

Some participants played single mothers with two teenagers; others were teenagers with children of their own.

Throughout the room, stations represented different aspects of a community: the school, landlord, utility company, employer, social services, bank, quick cash lender, pawn shop, police, grocer and a charity organization.

For an additional challenge, many of the activities required transportation passes to represent gas money, bus fair or time spent walking.

Several participants said this was the most difficult part of the simulation, and particularly relevant in the Atlanta area The scenario consisted of four

10-minute sessions, each representing a week.

Those playing children had to spend five minutes in school, and adults had to spend as much time at work if they wanted to be paid their full salary.

Participants soon realized how little time this left for paying bills, buying groceries and other tasks, especially when they had to wait in line at many of the stations.

In the first “week,” only one family remembered to buy groceries.

By the end of the simulation, nearly all of the families were threatened with eviction.

Only one person showed up for work all four weeks, and many of the teens stopped attending school to find jobs of their own.

The participants had two main takeaways. One was that little obstacles can quickly add up to a desperate situation.

“Things kept stacking up,” said the Rev. Jason Zemke, assistant minister at Mt Pisgah United Methodist. Zemke played a single mother with two teenagers.

“It’s not easy. Not easy at all,” Zemke said. “I have $15, a kid in jail, a kid working in a pawn shop. I have a parttime job, but it’s not enough to keep me from getting evicted.”

This scenario may be fabricated, but the feeling of being overwhelmed is all too real for many.

“You have to understand this is what

our families feel,” said Mary Good, vice president of the NFCC board who ran the employer station.

The other main takeaway from the exercise was how institutions can take advantage of people in vulnerable situations.

“There were things that seemed rigged or broken to show how quickly that can snowball,” said Sharla Calloway, NFCC director of volunteer services.

The pawn shop made over $1,000 in profits by shortchanging those that came to sell their items.

The landlord tried to evict families without giving them a 30-day notice.

Transportation passes valued at $1 were sold for $2 to $4.

“I’ve charged $25 to $40 to cash checks, and out of desperation people have paid it,” said Shaheen Bharde, a NFCC board member who ran the pawn shop and quick cash station. “It’s a good life being corrupt.”

Bharde added that the simulation can be as enlightening for the volunteers running the stations as it is for the participants playing the families.

“It’s scary being desperate, but it’s even scarier being in control, to see how easy it is to be corrupted,” Bharde said.

Even when they knew they were being swindled, many participants still returned to the predatory quick cash lender and pawn shop because they had no other option.

minister of the Johns Creek Christian Church, said the experience was eyeopening.

“At these places you feel like you’re being taking advantage of because you’re stuck,” Kenley said. “You can’t do what other people would do in your situation.”

Only about half of the families sought help from the charity station, but those that did came back.

Calloway said this happens in almost every simulation and is a fair representation of what NFCC sees.

NFCC has been running these simulations for a few years, for schools and businesses. The program on Sept. 13 was unique for bringing together faith leaders from across the region.

“We hope that by bringing them together and making them work together, they will continue to work together to make North Fulton better,” Bharde said.

Barbara Duffy, executive director at NFCC, said she hopes the faith leaders will bring the simulation to their congregations. Duffy encouraged the participants to think not only of how they can volunteer or donate, but also how they can impact public policy.

“The families themselves cannot expand Medicaid.

We as a community can. The families themselves cannot expand MARTA East/ West, but we will get to vote in March.

It’s very important that we speak up for the families that can’t,” Duffy said.

By JILLIAN DIMARCO interns@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — On Tuesday morning, Sept. 11, Milton High School hosted a dedication ceremony to the men and women who died in the 9/11 terrorist attack. The Milton High students led the ceremony with the Deputy Fire Chief Mark Stevens who gave a speech.

Students Ben Reilly, Jimmy Reilly, Faith Wagner, Luke Bonneville, Emma Pettit, Neil Verma, Samantha Lenox, Philip Belkeir and Peyton Stanley spoke at the memorial.

During the ceremony, each student spoke about one individual victim.

Bonneville spoke on behalf of Diane Simpson who lost her husband, Jeff, in the attacks.

“Even when he wasn’t on duty, he was always on duty,” Bonneville said.

Stevens gave a speech about bringing together the community during these times of need, bringing hope to the hopeless and doing even just the slightest thing to help out those in need.

The Milton High School chorus finished off the ceremony by singing “God Bless America”.

Alpharetta log cabin restoration hits snag Historical Society seeks donations to complete work

No matter how carefully you plan for that day when you draw back the curtains, something happens.

That’s the situation with the Alpharetta and Old Milton County Historical Society and its effort to restore the 83-year-old FFA log cabin. After a major fundraising event last year, the historic structure was moved from its original site at the old Milton High School campus to a small park about 500 feet farther west on Milton Avenue.

Estimates for the total project, including the renovations and landscaping, ran around $180,000, according to Historical Society President Pat Miller.

But now, there’s a hitch.

The organization learned recently it must install a sprinkler system.

We were so excited, and then this bombshell came.”

That’s not to say the project is at a standstill.

The outside foundation is nearly complete, a new roof is going up, the interior is framed, and the basement has been poured.

Workers are in the process of rebuilding the fireplace from scratch. The old stones from the original fireplace were too large and unwieldy, so organizers opted for smaller stones with a flat surface.

A small bathroom and back room have been added to the original structure.

At the time of the relocation last year, the Historical Society had collected about $162,000 in donations, including $50,000 from the City of Alpharetta, and a $15,000 contribution from the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

More contributions have since poured in.

Right now, Lee said, the nonprofit has spent around $206,000 for the project, and it needs another surge in donations.

To accommodate the sprinkler system, a larger, 4-inch water pipe must be installed from the cabin to a line across Milton Avenue. Project leaders still don’t know how extensive the sprinkler system

must be because the fire marshal has yet to determine the cabin’s capacity, Lee said.

Another added expense has cropped up in the chinking and sealing of the logs around the added room in back, she said.

“I know anytime you do renovations, it seems it always ends up more than your estimate, plus all of this development that’s going around town, that’s just upping the price on everything,” Lee said. “So far, we have spent $206,000 and we have about $32,000 in reserves, so we’re going to need about $60,000 more to finish the cabin, get it up and

running.”

The Historical Society is asking for community support to help complete the project. It hopes to make the cabin a gathering place for craft classes, educational demonstrations and other community events.

Suicide summit explains ‘ripple effect’ in community

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Krista Wagner admits to feeling uncomfortable discussing her son Logan’s death, but she still took the stage at the second annual Suicide Summit Sept. 10 hoping to help others.

“If I gently go over the details because it makes me uncomfortable, the killer suicide continues to win,” Wagner said to the crowd at the Forsyth Conference Center. “This killer feeds on our fears, relying on us to avoid the taboo topic.

It relishes in our pain and thus gains more power. It whispers lies to its victims like a soothing mother. Suicide preys on our ignorance in order to continue this epidemic.”

Wagner was one of several speakers at the Summit who spoke on the topic because she said she is “at war” with it after her son, who was a student at West Forsyth High School, died by suicide in 2016. Logan had reached out to his school counselor on a Thursday and was told the next available appointment was on the following Monday.

But he took his own life that Fri-

day, Aug. 5, 2016.

Wagner decided to tell her family’s story and explain how it created a “ripple effect” with others in hopes of helping parents see warning signs or reach out to those who are struggling.

Education can be the first step.

In Georgia, data from 2012 to2014 places suicide in the top 10 leading causes of death for individuals ages 10-64, said Suicide Prevention Director Walker Tisdale with the Georgia Department of Behavioral health and Developmental Disabilities. It’s the second leading cause of death for people ages 25-34 and third leading cause of death for those from ages 10-24.

According to state data from the Georgia Department of Public Health, 1,274 people died from suicide in 2015.

City further refines code for future North Point development Plan sets theme for revitalization within district

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A framework for major revitalization of Alpharetta’s North Point area could be in place within the next two months.

Alpharetta city leaders met with TSW design consultant Caleb Racicot Sept. 11 for a special workshop to hammer out final details of revised zoning and building requirements for the district.

With two massive mixed-use developments completed over the past 10 years, the city is now turning its focus to North Point, which has suffered sizeable losses recently with the closures of Sears and Toys ‘R’ Us retailers.

“We’re focusing now on the North Point corridor much like the city focused on Avalon and City Center in the past,” Mayor Jim Gilvin said.

Avalon, which opened four years ago, and the nearly completed City Center already have established momentum as commercial and residential attractions.

“We want to continue to make sure that City Center turns out like it needs to and downtown continues to grow and prosper,” Gilvin said. “We still want to make sure Avalon keeps its crown as being a dynamic location. But they’re in different stages now. They have their momentum, while we’ve got to get that momentum started in North Point.”

The focus of the workshop was to put the final touches on codes governing the size, uses and makeup of developments

for North Point.

Much of the discussion revolved around development requirements that fit into a designation for an ecodistrict — an urban planning method that integrates sustainable development and reduces the ecological footprint of projects.

Racicot presented a slate of suggestions governing allowable uses and building sizes for construction in the district.

Suggestions included, for example, setting percentages for the amount of space a building should set aside for community or amenity space. Plans also call for limiting residential-use building sizes to a maximum footprint of 50,000 square feet.

Racicot said the residential codes were meant to fit between the allowances provided at Avalon and at City Center for residential.

The code also suggests limiting density to eight units per acre in most cases.

Most of the discussion at the workshop focused on requirements for open space.

Racicot said the plan is set up with open space requirements in the zoning and the overlays within the district.

Our initial proposal to exempt smaller sites from open space standards may have been too extreme,” Racicot said.

For a non-residential development would be required to have at least 5 percent amenity space, things like outdoor dining or a rooftop patio.

City Councilman John Hipes suggested that sliding back the scale for open space requirements on smaller developments might encourage developers to pursue more small tracts to circum-

Community Development Director Kathi Cook said she doubts anyone would take that approach because each property is governed by setback requirements, and that would deter developers from taking a piecemeal approach to building.

Though there was no general consensus among council members, one idea was to apply a uniform percentage devoted to civic or amenity space to all developments, possibly 15 percent. One suggestion was to give smaller properties leeway in how the open space is used, whether for private or public access.

Other areas addressed at the workshop included determining block sizes, which are, for now, set with a perimeter of 1,600 feet.

Following the workshop, the mayor

stressed that property owners will ultimately determine what’s to be built at North Point. The city, he said, is trying to provide some guidelines that follow the North Point Livable Centers Initiative.

“I think the general consensus is we want to be an area at North Point that is walkable, does have the same type of mixed-use development that’s in Avalon or City Center but with a focus more on technology and greenspace – actual living things like trees and grass where people can relax and get away for a little bit,” Gilvin said.

Barring any snags, the updated codes and overlay for the district should be ready to go before the Alpharetta Planning Commission in October, then be considered for City Council approval the following month.

This long stretch of state highway could very well be one of the most nondescript developed roads in North Fulton.

The area was mostly developed in the 1980s when strip malls and contemporary condos were in fashion, and when there was no City of Sandy Springs and every developer with half a pulse got approval for projects from a very distant Fulton County government in downtown Atlanta.

Growing up in Roswell, the only time we really went south of the River on 9 was when my Pop Warner football team traveled to play those Sandy Springs Saints. When I got to high school, because I lived on the East Side of Roswell, I got to attend Crestwood High School.

The school was just south of the river and east of Ga. 9. It was built in the 1970s and put out of its misery in 1991. If you ever saw Crestwood, you’d know what I mean. (The fact that the building was mostly demolished after only 20 years of existence should say something.) It was rebuilt and today is a much-improved Sandy Springs Middle School.

There were great memories there.

There are many reasons to know about the North River Tavern. But for some of you, it is the place on the other side of the river that you go to after Canton Street shuts down. It kind of reminds me of the bar in the old movie “Footloose” that they’d go to just outside the city limits so they could dance.

If you are not Ubering to the North River Tavern after midnight, the other reasons you might head down this stretch of road is to avoid Ga. 400 traffic, or to get your tag or driver’s license renewed. A select few of you might also be heading from the Ferrari dealership in Alpharetta down to the Lamborghini dealership.

The area has been largely ignored.

Since becoming a city in 2005, Sandy Springs has had its hands full with organizing a government that suddenly had oversight of more than 105,000 residents and a workforce that includes the headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies, numerous regional headquarters and more than 5,500 businesses. But by a wide margin, most of that is south of Abernathy Road. There is a huge difference between north and south Sandy Springs.

In a recent article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul said he appointed members of the nonprofit community to the task force to ensure this area remains affordable for those on the lower end of the income ladder. These include “people who work in the restaurants and retail stores, and in landscaping and other jobs that we collectively call the essential economy,” he said. “People working at the hospitals, teachers, police and firefighters, and middle managers in the corporate realm.”

One member of the task force said it will look at ways to incentivize redevelopment that will “change some of the retail development patterns.” The article mentioned Tax Allocation Districts, Community Improvement Districts and new transit improvements that could have a significant impact on this stretch of road.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The haunted house on the corner of South Main Street and Wills Road is making way for a new senior housing community.

The old House on Horror Hill building, a Halloween favorite among residents, was recently demolished to make way for construction on the Village at Wills Park.

The Alpharetta City Council approved the 130-unit project last June on the seven acres that formerly housed the haunted house, a place of worship and a barn.

The project is being developed by

Village Park Senior Living, which has existing branches in Peachtree Corners and on Morris Road in Alpharetta.

The new Wills Road location will offer a “unique, farmhouse-style senior living community” made up of assisted living and memory care.

The developer’s plans include a main building and several single-story cottages and duplexes, as well as an independent living portion. As set forth by one of the conditions, the exteriors of these buildings will be made up of at least 40 percent stone or brick. A bus shelter will likewise be built near the development.

Five oak trees within the property will be preserved.

Appen Media welcomes interns ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Two Milton High School seniors are taking on the role of intern with Appen Media this school year.

Jillian DiMarco is from Alpharetta and hopes to go to Auburn University next year to DiMARCO study journalism and mass communications.

DiMarco is involved in the National Honors Society, student council and is the girls varsity tennis captain.

She said she plans to use her communication skills at her internship, while she masters AP Style and learns techniques that will help her in college and at a future job.

“I wanted to intern with a newspaper because I love to write and wanted to get the hands-on experience,” DiMarco said. “I chose Appen because I live down the street from their office and wanted to be able to have people I know read my

writing.”

Nikaya Glatt, or Nik for short, was born in China, but now resides in Roswell. She wants to attend the University of Georgia or Clemson University next fall.

Glatt is vacillating between a double major GLATT in psychology and literature, or a major in literature with a minor in either business and communications or marketing.

At Milton, Glatt is part of the National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society. She is active in other extracurricular activities outside of school.

“I wanted to intern with a newspaper company because I wanted to broaden my experience of literature with a different type of genre,” Glatt said. “I hope to become a better writer and participate in a little bit of everything before the end of the semester.”

An interview with Dr. Taylor

By Alyssa MacNamera I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win to ask him about his recent success.

As we sit in the bright, clean, welcoming waiting room of Premier Dermatology, Dr. Taylor is holding his newborn son, his third boy, only 15 days old. He apologizes for the squeaks of the sleeping baby and smiles apologizing when those squeaks interrupt our interview.

After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown. He is warm, instantly calming, respectful and shockingly intelligent.

Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and surgical ability are well established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician.

Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Atlanta! As a new practice, it is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone winning Best Vein Specialist 2 years in a row. To what do you attribute to your success?

Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much! You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade.

I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons.

Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me.

I don’t have any hidden secret to Premier Dermatology’s success per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patient-centered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them. Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated into improved processes within my own practice.

But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff! Given that we are a small practice with only 7 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients.

We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We’ve been open 18 months now and are constantly Dr. Taylor trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence.

Is there something you feel sets yourself apart from the other physicians in the area?

Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. (With a laugh) Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care. And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule.

Regarding Mohs surgery and vein care, my fellowship covered multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred out to other specialists, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and board-certified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with the ability to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Dr. Taylor: I really just want to say thank you very much! Thank you to our staff: you are valued and wonderful and we wouldn’t be continuing to excel without each and every one of you! Also thank you so very much to all of our patients and our community! Your confidence and support is greatly appreciated and rewarding. I look forward to continuing to strive to provide patients with exceptional care.

My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area.

When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives!

Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years.

We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last five years! You don’t win many awards after high school, so it is

a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 22,000 new patients over the years, so we have a little head start.

Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. With the help of these visual aids, we can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options.

Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation.

Offering classes addressing the needs of each individual student with special emphasis placed on correct technique and progress.

The goal is to give each student knowledge and appreciation for the art of dance, while adequately and enthusiastically encouraging students who are striving for the next level; such as summer intensive programs with prestigious schools as well as scholarships to colleges and professional dance.

Founder Jonnie Kelley received her early training in Atlanta, New York City and the National Ballet School in Canada. She taught for over 45 years, and was the Founding Artistic Director of Atlanta Dance Theatre, the official performing company for The Dancers Studio/Backstage in North Atlanta. She taught for many major dance organizations and was active in several art organizations. Her credits include: Regional Ballet, Musical Comedy Productions,

Dinner Theatre and Touring groups, both as a performer and a choreographer. Jonnie passed this spring at the age of 80.

The Dancer’s Studio/Backstage is excited to welcome the next generation of dancers and instructors who will cultivate Jonnie’s passion for dance and community in North Atlanta.

Past alumni include dancers in Carolina ballet, Ballet West, Nashville Ballet, Lexington Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet as well as Broadway, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Disney productions and Glo-Atl. Many others have majored in dance in college and are now teachers in their own schools.

The Dancers Studio/Backstage offers instruction in: Ballet, Pointe, Contemporary, Jazz, Tap, Musical Theatre, Modern and Hip Hop. Atlanta Dance Theatre, an honor company with Regional Dance America/Southeastern Regional Ballet Association, performs Nutcracker in December and a family favorite in the spring.

The price of freedom

By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor James A. Johnston was 19 years-old when he and his regiment began their 600-mile march to Gettysburg in 1862. And he was 95 when he returned there Chadwick for the 75th Commemoration of that battle in 1938. It seems impossible to think that James and 2 year-old John McCain could have both attended that event.

When I realized that my sister (who is still living) had been bounced upon that man’s knee, it made that ancient Civil War something brand new and very real to me. My mother‘s grandfather - a freer of slaves.

What could have made him go?

How did the issue of slavery have real relevance to him or to his community?

And then, what about the other 360,000 northern soldiers who lost their lives in the interest of others.

Imagine the negative impact of leaving families made up of women and children to face the natural dangers of a world without any convenience; with real vulnerability to much worse.

This choice was made purposefully. Was it actually undertaken to gain the freedom of strangers? People whose welfare had no direct impact on these men or the lives of those they loved.

I have come to understand that they were defining the nation they wanted America to exemplify: A country built on

freedom.

This was a time of nation building - by farmers and teachers and blacksmiths and barbers. Justice and righteousness were the tools of a people determined to create a civil society. Their intention was to create individual sovereignty unlike the monarchies of Europe and the rest of the world.

So how is it possible to have a conversation about race in America that is not informed by the sacrifice of those 360,000 mostly white men given to gain the freedom of slaves?

I once felt like a revolutionary when I boarded buses to walk in Washington DC with Dr. King, but I was not; not anymore than those who choose now to take a knee. In a world where we are all hungry for evidence of wisdom, or even commonsense - for compassion and natural virtue, I offer this column. It will be about how human experience is altered by those serving ideas or ideals beyond their own personal needs. How real transformation is possible when communities of people join to build solutions to inequality. You will be inspired by their insight, but I also hope you’ll be empowered by them to join in building a more civil and inclusive society.

Vera Muriel Berlinger

Vera Muriel Berlinger (née Kesseler) died peacefully on Saturday, August 25th, in Milton, GA, surrounded by her family. Vera was born in Birmingham, England, on Dec. 6, 1928 and came to the United States with her husband and three daughters in 1965; her son was born in New York where she and her husband, Hans, lived until retiring to GA in 2005. During her life, Vera held various professional positions working in the fields of medicine, radio, real estate and engineering. She loved to travel and meet people; most who knew her were struck by her irrepressible energy and indomitable spirit. Her garden was

probably her greatest hobby, but she felt strongly about nature at large, particularly animals. She will be sorely missed by and is survived by her loving husband of sixty-two years, Hans Berlinger, and her children Ursula Berlinger, Jacqui Clelland and Alison Holland of Alpharetta, GA and her son, Michael Berlinger of San Francisco, CA. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Blake, Antonia, Will and Luke and her nephew, Rob Kesseler and his family in England. A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined.
