JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A man wanted on charges of child support obligations and child abandonment was arrested

by Johns Creek police Sept. 9 for possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute.

Officers identified the man, who had a warrant for his arrest in Dekalb and Gwinnett counties, and conducted a traffic stop. During the traffic stop, police searched the vehicle after smelling

graphs and videos of her.

When police began investigating the threats, they found that the same email had been used in spam extortion emails to several other people in the past month. The victims did not suffer any damages, according police.

The woman did not send any money, and police said her devices were normal.

Cove, Milton, was arrested Sept. 10 on Ga. 400, Alpharetta, for DUI and speeding. ►► Michael Taylor Long, 23, of Waveland Drive, Cumming, was arrested Sept. 12 on Beragio Place, Alpharetta, for DUI. ►► Amal A Mohamed, 28, of Henderson Ridge Drive, Tucker, was arrested Sept.

17 on Westside Parkway, Alpharetta, for DUI and failure to maintain lane.

Drug arrests ►► Daniel Todd Gainey, 28, of Collier

Road NW, Atlanta, was arrested Sept.

1 on Crabapple Road, Milton, for possession of marijuana and having a tag light out. marijuana.

Officers located 24.9 grams of marijuana, 198 Xanax pills, 98 MDMA pills, 10.3 grams of crystal meth and six THC oil tubes.

The wanted man was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and his passenger was charged with possession of Schedule I and possession of Schedule II drugs.

of Hurt Bridge Road, Cumming, was arrested Sept. 8 on Windward Parkway, Milton, for possession of marijuana and having an expired tag. ►► Mekonnen M McKinkeley, 39, of Cottonpatch Road, Lawrenceville, was arrested Sept. 9 on Jones Bridge Road, Johns Creek, for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of Schedule I drugs, possession of Schedule II drugs and for being a wanted person. ►► Donelle M Mims, 38, of Old Rockbridge Road, Stone Mountain, was arrested Sept. 9 on Jones Bridge Road, Johns Creek, for possession of Schedule I drugs and possession of Schedule II drugs. his address. The package had been sent to a location in Colorado, but was refused at its destination and was returned to the Forsyth County address.

The original mailing point was from Gainesville and was sent on Aug. 23.

The man asked deputies to open the package, and a bag of methamphetamine was located hidden inside a deodorant stick.

The drugs were taken to the sheriff’s office precinct to be destroyed.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — When returning home Aug. 29, a man received a strange package on his door step that didn’t belong to him.

Laser Cataract Surgery: Is It All Hype?

Many of you reading this article may not have realized that cataract surgery has evolved rapidly in the past 3-4 years. This pace of change pales in comparison to how the procedure has evolved in the past 50 years. For perspective, the procedure started off around 2000 years ago by an Indian sage named Sushruta. His tools?

Early morning rays of sunlight, a long thin needle, ghee (clarified butter) and Sanskrit verses. Fast forward to 2017 and the procedure can be a wonderful mixture of OCT guided real-time imagery, femtosecond laser driven tissue cutting and advanced phacoemulsification with active fluidics.

Is it fancy? Oh yes.

Does Milan Eye Center have one? Of course.

Is it necessary? Well, no and yes.

Though the recent evolution in the cataract surgery space with femtosecond laser is significant, the procedure evolved considerably after the advent of phacoemulsification in the late 1960s by Dr. Charles Kelman.

The improvements in phacoemulsification technology since then have been continuous, innovative and powerful. So much so, that outcomes from modern phacoemulsification (this means cataract surgery by hand without laser) are equivalent to femtosecond laser cataract surgery - as has been proven in several studies. Put another way, femtosecond laser cataract surgery is non-superior to manual cataract surgery in many instances - but not all instances.

Just as people don’t come in the same color, shape or size, neither do cataracts. We have learnt over time that certain cataract types are not optimal for manual cataract surgery. Cataracts that are very dense, cataracts that are associated with a weakened cornea and cataracts that are unstable are some of the instances where manual cataract surgery is not ideal. This is where laser cataract surgery shines - no pun intended! Femtosecond laser cataract surgery enables the surgeon to break up a rockhard cataract before entering the eye, enables the creation of beautiful and perfect circular openings in unstable and misaligned cataracts and minimizes the creation of by-product energy that can harm surrounding tissue. In short, it is a much needed and precise tool for these complex cases. A secondary function of femtosecond laser is astigmatism correction via astigmatic keratotomies. These are precisely placed incisions in the cornea, the clear, dome shaped tissue covering the eye.

The role of laser cataract surgery may evolve still as more advanced intraocular lenses are introduced that require more precise placement. As laser platforms become smaller and more integrated into the operating room workflow, the use may also increase.

Incumbent Mayor Joe Lockwood will run against psychologist Laura Rencher, and voters will decide between incumbent Bill Lusk and Equestrian Committee Chair Laura Bentley for District 2, Post 1.

Peyton Jamison, chair of the Planning Commission, is running unopposed for the District 1, Post 1 seat while incumbent Joe Longoria will run unopposed for District 3, Post 1. The Milton Herald will run the unopposed candidates profiles in next week’s edition.

Joe Lockwood (incumbent) Why did you decide to run for re-election?

In 2006, I realized everything that was important to me – my family, home, church, friends and business — were all in our newly formed city. If I Lockwood could use my experience and hard work to make it a better

place to live, then it would benefit my family and all Milton citizens equally.

After 11 years of experience, my commitment and passion for improving and serving Milton remain the same.

What qualifications do you bring to your potential seat?

In addition to serving as Milton’s mayor, I am a small business owner that understands how to build a successful team while being a committed family man. These skills have allowed me to ensure Milton received a AAA bond rating while investing in capital improvement projects to help build our city. My collaborative approach has allowed me to cultivate positive relationships with our region’s leaders, which has been key to Milton’s success.

What are some issues in the city you hope to address?

My continuing focus will be to relieve traffic congestion, promote low-density development that adheres to one-plus acre minimum lots in AG-1 zoned areas, and maximize greenspace bond funds to help preserve and enhance our distinct character. I like to study, and I’ll freely admit I do not know everything, but I am tenacious enough to learn what is needed or to find the expertise needed for fresh solutions. Strong leaders don’t ignore problems, they bring solutions to the table and I am not afraid to fight for what is right for Milton’s citizens.

What are some issues in the city you hope to address?

I will work to protect our rural character and small-town feel and show real leadership to preserve our quality of life. I offer a balanced approach between community and property owner rights. This is the path forward to reduce traffic problems, retain property values, and keep our community safe and prosperous. I want to preserve Milton’s distinct identity that makes it a great place to live, work and play.

Why should Milton residents vote for you?

My focus is to get us back on the course we started 11 years ago. We cannot stand by and watch our city evolve into a generic suburb. Milton desperately needs visionary leadership that is not satisfied with the status quo.

Why did you decide to run for election?

I am running for City Council because I believe the people of Milton deserve better representation.

Like most residents, I am concerned about threats to Milton’s Bentley quality of life, including traffic congestion, overcrowded school and parks, and fluctuating property values. Citizens need a strong voice on council that consistently speaks to preserving and protecting our unique community. I will be that voice for Milton.

What qualifications do you bring to your potential seat?

I have endless energy that results from my genuine passion for our beautiful town. For over a decade, I have

worked with citizens, city staff and several Milton committees to enhance and protect the unique attributes that define Milton. I have also worked diligently to support our school system. As a farm owner and equestrian serving as chair of Milton’s Equestrian Committee, I offer an important perspective that is lacking from our council.

What are some issues in the city you hope to address?

Rezoning applications that violate our Comprehensive Land Use Plan should be denied by City Council. The voting record of my opponent, Bill Lusk, supports high-density rezoning which compounds traffic congestion, accelerates overcrowding of schools and diminishes our property values. This must stop if we intend to preserve our unique community. We also have a tremendous opportunity to coordinate our trails, parks and green space strategies, which will provide unprecedented value to our citizens.

Why should Milton residents vote for you?

Residents should vote for me because I want to speak clearly and unequivocally for them. Milton must continue to grow and evolve under the careful watch of the City Council. I want to serve the people of Milton and promote the citizen’s agenda. I have a strong work ethic and the highest standards of integrity. For years, I have

been an advocate for smart growth.

Now it’s critical that I represent the community as a council member.

Bill Lusk (incumbent) Why did you decide to run for re-election?

Since Milton’s inception, I have sought to make Milton one of the greatest cities in Georgia. We have come a long way achieving that vision thanks Lusk to our outstanding elected officials, city staff and involved citizens, but there is more greatness ahead. Milton has been recognized as having the best quality of life in Georgia, one of the safest cities in Georgia while achieving a AAA Bond rating. I want to build on those achievements in my last term.

What qualifications do you bring to your potential seat?

As a councilman since the founding of Milton, I bring extensive experience to the council. A civil engineer by education and a builder by trade, I ran my own construction business for nearly 30 years. I built many of the churches in this area. I served on the City of Milton Formation Committee, North

Fulton Design Review Board, Public Works subcommittee, as chairman of the Friends of the Milton Library, and others. I am a Vietnam Veteran.

What are some issues in the city you hope to address?

Work to cap property assessments for first- and second-time homeowners.

Also: • Attract quality businesses to our small commercial zones. Nothing communicates the vibrancy of a city than a thriving commercial zone.

• Fight high density housing developments like the Crescent Properties 256-unit apartment project. I cast the deciding vote to deny that project.

• See Providence Park and the newly purchased Alpharetta/Milton Park achieve their full potential.

• Increase traffic safety through further intersection improvements.

Why should Milton residents vote for you?

Milton is on a roll. We, the citizens of Milton, have achieved great things working together while preserving our essential character. The best is yet to come. Changing a jockey in the middle of a race for the sake of change slows the process and is never a policy for success. Winners keep working with what works best. I have the professional and City Council experience to help take our city to even greater heights.

I read an interesting piece in the Atlanta JournalConstitution the other day – and yes I read it every day – that devoted quite a bit of space to the unusual fact that the Fulton County Commission will find it more difficult to approve any deci-

sions until Jan.1.

With the untimely death of Fulton County Commissioner Joan Garner and the resignation of Chairman John Eaves to run for mayor of Atlanta the Fulton County Commission has a higher threshold to pass anything.

Or as the AJC’s Ariella Kass wrote: “In Fulton County the math just got harder.”

Fulton commissioners are under an unusual restraint in that despite temporarily reduced to a 5-member board, its bylaws still require a 4-vote majority on any question put to a vote.

So until new commissioners are seated there can be no more than 1 dissenting vote (or absence) to pass a budget or any other item of county business.

Johns Creek went through a similar dearth of elected officials in 2015. The council decided to pass on a special election and wait several months for November to roll around to fill those seats then.

Roswell is down one seat now, owing to a sitting councilman resigning to run for mayor (there are five candidates in that race).

One of his opponents is a sitting councilwoman also, but happily her term ends Dec. 31 and she can keep her seat.

But the mayor only votes in case of a tie, so three votes is enough to swing a decision, which in normal times would mean the measure failed.

However, all of these political contretemps pale in comparison to the 1993 Fulton County situation in which THREE seats were open, forcing the remaining four commissioners to vote unanimously to pass any matter requiring a vote.

Every item on the agenda required unanimity. And in those not-so-longago days the commissioners seldom seemed to agree about much at all.

There were Atlanta interests, North Fulton interests, and South Fulton interests.

On top of that, there were race

issues as a new black majority was seen by whites in Sandy Springs and North Fulton as giving these white enclaves short shrift in terms of county resources.

Fulton Commission Chairman Michael Lomax got the ball rolling in 1993 when he resigned to run for the open seat of mayor of Atlanta. Fulton Commissioner Marty King also resigned to run for mayor as well. (Both would lose to former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson.)

Redistricting that year was doing away with one of the county’s at-large seats to form a single North Fulton District 2 seat. (Today it has been divided again into seats 1 and 2.)

In 1993 North Fulton Commissioner Milton Carl Farris held that at-large seat but instead resigned to run for the one remaining at-large seat.

With a second North Fulton seat in the bag, Farris was running for the last remaining at-large seat held by Michael Hightower.

Farris’ plan to join with Sandy Springs state legislator Mitch Skandalakis who ran for and won the chairmanship and newly formed North Fulton District (won by Robert E. “Bob” Fulton) and sitting Sandy Springs Commissioner Tom Lowe.

This would swing the balance of power away from Atlanta to the emerging North Fulton.

In that smoldering political cauldron, the four-member commission consisting of Emma Darnell, Nancy Boxill, Gordon Joyner and Lowe had three months of wary cooperation.

In the end, Farris lost and Skandalakis won. The Fulton Commission broke along racial lines with whites Skandalakis, Lowe and Fulton in the minority.

Today cityhood in North Fulton has reduced much of the friction between residents north of Atlanta and the rest of the county.

There are large Asian and South Asian communities in North Fulton which has leavened the cultural and racial mix as well.

There were a die-hard calls for creation of a Milton County, but the autonomy residents sought by being rid of Fulton County oversight has since been achieved by the creation of new cities with local city councils now in charge of most things.

Only Commissioner Darnell remains from those days of political discord.

The bones residents have to pick with elected officials are mostly with local elected officials now.

CRK was the 11th licensed program in the international Waterkeeper Alliance, now close to 250 organizations strong.

From the north Georgia mountains to the Florida border, the Chattahoochee River is impacted by unplanned development, storm runoff and trash from industries, roads, and construction sites, and discharges from sewage treatment plants. Withdrawals from the river by municipalities and industries also affect its health through consumptive loss of water that is not returned to the river, impacting downstream water quality, recreation and ecology. While significant improvements have been made in the river, much remains to be accomplished.

CRK actively uses advocacy, education, research, communication, cooperation, monitoring and legal actions to protect and preserve the Chattahoochee and its watershed.

City Council approves rewrite to noise ordinance New regulations easier to enforce, city officials say

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Citing difficulty in enforcing its existing noise ordinance, the Milton City Council approved a new version at a special called meeting Sept.

13.

City Manager Steven Krokoff said the revised ordinance simplifies enforcement and eliminates gaps in the language.

The revised language provides spe-

cific times for certain uses, many not addressed in the previous ordinance.

One element of the new ordinance addresses amplified sound that affects residential life. The rewrite limits amplified sound to between 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday.

However, a special-use permit could be issued that would dictate allowable times and levels. Businesses or locations would need a one-time permit.

Allowable decibel levels for amplified sounds have been lowered from 70 to 65.

The council also added a footnote regarding permissible times for commercial equipment for golf and equestrian functions.

Councilwoman Karen Thurman expressed a potential issue with the ordinance, leading to the footnote. As presented, the code would not allow the use of commercial equipment, such as lawnmowers or leaf blowers, on golf courses until 9 a.m. on Saturdays and not at all on Sundays.

She said this could present a problem for the golf courses which regularly have tee times much earlier than 9 a.m.

The footnote provides Community Development Director Kathy Field the authority to issue a variance permitting a start time of as early as 7:30 a.m. and later than the previously written sunset end time.

The new ordinance also addresses sounds generated from animals.

A violation includes animal noises that have a duration of 15 minutes. It also identifies violators as those creating noise or sounds that would knowingly cause animals distress, such as the shooting of fireworks or guns.

The approval of the new ordinance led to the withdrawal of two separate agenda items outlining the permissible hours of construction activity. The items were withdrawn because the adopted noise ordinance identifies the permissible hours of construction activity.

Under the new regulations, commercial construction or garage machinery use is permitted between 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays.

Born world apart, ministers find friendship Alpharettan, Indian man of cloth find common ground in faith

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Rev. Raj Nadella serves as assistant professor of New Testament Studies at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, while the Rev. G. Oliver Wagner serves as senior pastor at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church. Yet they had to travel thousands of miles together to become friends.

Wagner met Nadella through the Columbia Seminary’s “Learning for Life” program, and the Presbyterian Seminary which offers continuing education classes and travel experiences for the community.

“I signed up for a class and Raj was one of the co-professors for the class,” said Wagner. “So I met him that way.

But it was when Raj was a co-leader on a trip to India that I also was on that we really got to know one another.”

It was a two-week trip through southern India with the primary purpose of exploring Christianity in India

“Christianity is largely a colonial

legacy from Britain, but there are some Indian churches that trace their roots

back to at least the 3rd century and some even claim the 1st century,” he said.

The Christian church is still a small religious minority in India but its roots are deep.

“India was always a place I had hoped to go. And for me, it was more educational for me to see India than just as a tourist,” Wagner said.

Wagner and Nadella found they had a natural affinity for one another as individuals and as theologians.

“For me I found Raj a very friendly, open spirit. He has worked hard and brings great insights into history and theology of the church,” Wagner said.

“He has a great sense of humor and he is just a lot more approachable than you find with most seminary faculty members.”

But it was on the trip to India that Wagner and Nadella really got to know each other. Not only was Nadella one of the leaders of the trip, he was the de facto guide and interpreter.

For Nadella, it was a long journey to meet Wagner as well. Nadella was born a Hindu and came to Christianity only after his mother converted. In India, although outlawed by the government, the caste system still exists. And Nadella found Christianity spiritually liberating.

Nadella says he found Christianity compelling because of its inclusiveness.

“I was especially drawn to the Gospel of Luke. Luke often contradicts what he says,” Nadella said.

Nadella was so intrigued by Luke he wrote his dissertation on Luke which became a book, “Dialogue Not Dogma: Many Voices in the Gospel of Luke.”

“What Luke does is promote discussions about multiple ideologies, views and politics. That was his world in the 1st century. So it is today,” Nadella said.

“Luke’s gospel offers people on the margins of society a place at the table as well,” he said. “Luke is a champion of the underdog. That is why he is appealing to me.”

That thought – and book – struck a chord with Wagner as well.

In their trip through India, Nadella introduced to a worship service at the Syrian Orthodox Church. Visiting such eastern churches and worshiping at them had a broadening effect on Wagner.

“So here is Christian tradition in the East that is more than a thousand years old. It’s an entirely different perspective. They just lump Catholics and Protestants together as westerners,” Wagner said.

Wagner recently had Nadella give a sermon at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church where he preached about Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan who stopped to give aid to a stranger and cared for him.

Jesus said “love thy neighbor as thyself,” and used the Samaritan as the exemplar when asked the question, “But who is my neighbor?”

It is anyone who is in need and whom we can help. Just as we do with those suffering from the hurricanes Harvey and Irma, no one stops to ask who needs help. We simply must render it.

Milton sweeps Fulton cross country championships Boys varsity team places 7 runners in the top eight

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Fulton County cross-country championship host Milton captured wins in five of the six competitions at the Sept. 16 meet, including team wins for boys and girls varsity.

The boys varsity team placed all seven of its runners in the top eight, earning a perfect score for the fifth time in program history.

The team was led by defending state champion Sam Bowers who won the individual title ahead of teammates Nicholas Yanek, Michael Malkowski, Ryan Beitzell and Samuel Milton.

The team average of 16:59 was faster than any individual winning time in the Fulton County championships from 2007-16.

Cambridge placed second, 44 points behind Milton, in the boys varsity race.

The Bears were led by Jack Filan who

placed sixth.

Northview and Blessed Trinity also placed runners in the top-10, with Northview and BT placing third and fourth respectively in team scores.

Johns Creek placed fifth and Roswell finished sixth.

Milton captured another individual title and team win in the girls varsity race.

Led by individual winner Abby Rindt, the Lady Eagles placed six runners in the top 10 to capture their second straight team win. Taylor Cushman, Faith Wagner, Annier Gallagher and Emily Bowers all scored for Milton.

Cambridge secured another podium finish with its girls varsity team placing second. Ashley Sechrest led the Lady Bears with a fourth-place finish.

Blessed Trinity placed three runners in the top-15 to finish third in team scores, 11 points ahead of Johns Creek.

Roswell placed fifth, with Idi Martinez placing 16th for the Lady Hornets.

Though Northview’s Sarika Temme-Bapat placed fifth, Northview placed sixth in team scores.

In JV competition, Milton’s Samantha Lenox and Cam Harman led the Eagles girls and boys team to team wins.

Cambridge falls to 0-4 with loss to Pope Week 5 (Sept. 15) football recap

Class 6A Pope 35, Cambridge 6 In a battle of two winless teams, Pope used three touchdowns in the first half to power their way to the win column. Cambridge fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAAAA games.

Quarterback Hogan Dykes connected with Ridge Polk for the Bears’ sole score of the game midway through the third quarter.

Pope’s offense averaged just 8.6 points per game entering the contest.

Alpharetta 42, Northview 17 Alpharetta improved to 2-0 in region play thanks to a three-score first quarter that powered them past Northview Friday night.

The Raiders scored on four touchdown passes from quarterback Matthew Downing, including two for over 80 yards. The Raiders defense also put points up with two interceptions returned for touchdowns from Jaycee Horn and Dane Motley.

The game marked the seventh straight year the meeting of the two programs has been decided by over 17 points.

Chattahoochee 21, North Atlanta 14 Chattahoochee remained unbeaten (2-0) in region play with another close win Friday night against previously unbeaten North Atlanta. For the third

straight game, a late interception sealed the Cougars’ win.

The Cougars led 13-0 entering the fourth quarter thanks to a passing and rushing touchdown from quarterback Jack Corrigan, but North Atlanta cut the lead with a touchdown with nine minutes remaining in the game.

Hooch responded with a 79-yard touchdown pass from Corrigan and a 2-point conversion, but the Warriors quickly cut the lead to 21-14 with six minutes remaining.

With 1:21 left, Hooch forced an interception from Andrew Thomas to seal the win. North Atlanta’s defense had allowed just 14 points in three games this season entering the night.

Centennial 21, Johns Creek 17 After being on the wrong end of a comeback win last week against Alpharetta, Centennial scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to earn its first win of the season.

Johns Creek led 17-7 early in the fourth quarter, but Centennial took a 21-17 lead with a touchdown pass from Max Brosmer to Blane Mason with under four minutes to go.

Johns Creek sought a go-ahead score on their ensuing drive and got within striking distance with under a minute to go. Facing a fourth-and-1 with 50 seconds remaining, a shotgun snap sailed over the head of Gladiators’ quarterback Zach Gibson, forcing a turnover on downs and ensuring the Centennial win.

Class 7A Lanier 15, Lambert 6 For the fourth-straight year, Lanier

got the better of Lambert in a battle of the Longhorns.

Lambert couldn’t find the end zone all night and had to settle for two field goals from Bryce Christensen. Multiple turnovers, including two interceptions, allowed Lanier to hold a 13-6 lead at the half.

Neither offense could find the scoreboard in the second half, but an intentional grounding call in the end zone against Lambert in the final two minutes gave Lanier a safety and 15-6 win.

Duluth 42, Forsyth Central 41 (OT) Forsyth Central had its potential first win in nearly a year slip away when a late Duluth touchdown and Bulldogs’ missed PAT in overtime proved the difference in a thriller.

Central trailed 27-21 midway through the third quarter before two rushing touchdowns put the Bulldogs up by 8 points late in the fourth.

Duluth responded with a score in the final minute and completed a pass on the 2-point conversion to force overtime.

In the overtime period, the Bulldogs scored on a rushing touchdown, but the PAT was blocked. Duluth’s 3-yard rushing score and made PAT secured the win for the Wildcats.

North Forsyth 58, Pickens 35 North Forsyth improved to 3-1 in an offensive shootout against Pickens Friday night with 93 total points scored.

North quarterback Ben Bales and running back Bryson Trigg combined for eight total touchdowns in the win.

North scored 38 points in the first half and held at least a two-score lead

for the remainder of the game to tie the all-time series between the programs at 4-4.

West Forsyth 15, Dacula 9 After failing to score for the first three quarters, West Forsyth scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth to improve to 3-1 and win a second straight meeting against Dacula.

West trailed 9-0 entering the fourth when quarterback Zach Burns connected with Ben Bresnahan for a 23yard touchdown seven seconds into the period.

West then used an 11-play drive, capped off by another Burns-to-Bresnahan touchdown pass, to take the lead. A 2-point conversion put the score at 15-9 with three minutes to go and West’s defense held on for the win.

Class 4A Blessed Trinity 31, Hart Co. 7 Blessed Trinity earned a second straight lopsided win over Hart County Friday night, and it could have been a bigger margin.

The Titans had three turnovers inside the red zone, but scored 31 unanswered points after trailing 7-0 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Milton prevails over Etowah in battle of the Eagles Milton downs Etowah 28-20 after short week

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The last time Milton was at home, they led Central Gwinnett late in the game, but a touchdown in the waning seconds cost them the win.

In Friday night’s matchup with Etowah (2-3, 0-0), Milton once again held a one-score lead in the final minute. This time they prevailed.

Milton outlasted Etowah 28-20 with a stop on fourth-and-seven at Milton’s 37-yard line with 30 seconds left to improve to 3-1 in head coach Adam Clack’s debut season.

“There was a lot of emotion and it was a very important game for our guys,” Clack said. “With the goofy weather and the short week, we knew it was going to be a simpler game — lining up and getting after each other.”

Etowah’s physical run game and Milton’s speed were on display.

Both teams relied on their rushing games and short passes, though a little trickery from Milton proved to be the difference.

Leading 21-20, Milton ran a flea flicker-like play on fourth down with running back Solomon Vanhorse passing to quarterback Jordan Yates on a screen that went 38 yards for a touchdown.

“We thought [Etowah] might be a little over-aggressive or we could catch them sleeping,” Clack said. “We thought why not get the ball in our best athlete’s hands and let him make a play.”

That score would be the final for Milton’s offense, which accumulated 409 total yards.

“We’re a razor’s edge from putting up really impressive numbers,” Clack said. “We’re seeing it start to happen with the improvements in efficiency and yardage.”

The efficiency was apparent. Yates was 15-20 passing for 210 yards with two touchdown passes and rushed for 52 yards in addition to his touchdown reception. Vanhorse rushed for 111 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown in the second quarter. He averaged 8.5 yards per carry.

Milton’s offense put up those numbers against a defense led by a familiar face. Former Milton head coach Howie DeCristofaro is the defensive coordinator for Etowah.

As the offense was able to move the ball effectively, Milton’s defense stood tall against Etowah’s power offense.

“We knew they were going to run right at us and we hadn’t seen a team like that this year,” Clack said. “I think it took our guys a minute to adjust, but we were able to readjust and regroup and slug it out with them.”

Milton opened the scoring on their first possession with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Yates to DJ Albright, but Etowah tied the game at 7-7 on their ensuing possession.

The two teams exchanged scores quickly again in the second quarter and the game was tied 14-14 at the half.

A 45-yard Etowah touchdown gave Etowah its only lead of the game, 2014, after the PAT was missed.

Yates connected with Kevin Murphy for a 26-yard touchdown soon after, extending the lead with the trick play touchdown midway through the third quarter.

Milton had a chance to put the game away in the fourth quarter driving inside the red zone. But Yates was intercepted on a pass in the end zone.

Etowah’s ensuing drive also ended with an interception when defensive lineman Justin Blanks intercepted a screen pass.

With 4:29 left in the game, Etowah’s offense took the field once again, but a turnover on downs in the final minute allowed Milton to seal the win.

Milton has a bye this week before facing rivals Roswell on the road.

Tropical storm leaves death, damage in its wake

Nancy Eason, 67, of Cumming, was in a car parked in the driveway of a home on Shadburn Road in North Forsyth around 5:30 p.m. when the incident happened, according to Public Information Officer

Schools close for three days The Fulton County School System was among the last in Metro Atlanta to announce cancellation of school for Monday, Sept. 11; the projected day of Hurricane Irma impact.

After the storm blew through, it appeared the decision was sound. By Tuesday morning, about 20 percent of the system’s 105 school buildings had lost power. Additionally, roads throughout the area were closed from fallen trees and downed power lines.

The damage was seen across the county. Damage assessment teams from the system were immediately sent out to every school, and by the end of the day Tuesday, power had been restored to all but one school, forcing Fulton School officials to cancel school for a third day.

A spokesperson for the school system noted that safe access and electricity were not the only factors used to judge whether a school could open.

The safety of foods for breakfast and lunches also had to be assessed since more than half of the systems 96,000 students participate in the school lunch program.

As a charter system, the state does not require Fulton County School System to make up the three days lost because of Hurricane Irma. That will be

a local decision made at a later date.

Milton suffers minor damage Milton city officials with public works, communications, police and fire were in for a long day that began at 5 a.m., Sept. 11, but the city suffered no major damage during Irma’s path through Georgia.

Though the city encountered over 30 incidences of downed trees and power lines, no injuries were reported.

Matt Marietta, Milton’s emergency management coordinator, said there were other fallen trees, but those were either on private property on not in the city’s right-of-way.

During the storm, the city’s paramedic checkups for those with special medical needs was also conducted.

“On the whole, the community was safe and our firefighters, police officers and public works crews worked diligently through the night and the next day to respond to events as they arose, and ensured that citizens were safe and that city services could get to them in the event of an emergency,” Marietta said.

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — More than 400 animals were rescued recently after the Atlanta Humane Society set up a temporary shelter in Roswell to house homeless cats and dogs displaced by recent hurricanes.

In the days between Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida and Georgia, the state of Georgia asked the Humane Society to open an emergency shelter to house up to 1,000 animals in need.

The nonprofit found a location at 1425 Market Blvd., in Roswell that had 60,000 square feet of space and was fully operationa,l including water and electricity. The space was donated by Mimms Enterprises in Atlanta at no cost.

Nearly all the animals housed at Fulton County Animal Services were transferred to the temporary shelter on the roadways,” Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said.

There were also reports of power outages throughout the city. Most sections had power restored by Wednesday, and a few areas had to wait until Thursday morning.

Drinkard said the only damage to city property was minor damage to a wall near Rest Haven Cemetery on Milton Avenue. As far as private property, he said, the city is just beginning to receive permitting requests for roofs and

LifeLine Animal Project, along with Fulton County, helped care for all the animals.

The rescued animals will be in the facility for as long as needed, Humane Society officials said.

Many of the out-of-state rescues were from local shelters to clear space for pets that were lost during the storm so they can be reunited with their families.

The community stepped up in the emergency, donating hundreds of beds, food, cat litter, toys, towels and puppy pads.

During their stay, close to a dozen local churches, businesses and restaurants, including Lowe’s, Dickey’s Barbecue and Nothing Bundt Cakes, stopped by with food and supplies, Young said.

The city also staffed the shelter with a police officer, paramedic and emergency medical technician.

“We were able to get a trailer from the Red Cross that had cots, blankets and supplies, and that helped out tremendously,” Young said.

The community also pitched in to help. Before the shelter even opened, the staff received dozens of calls from residents and groups asking how they could help.

“We had a lot of community members pour in,” Young said. “We had a list of people who we could call for supplies.

We had a couple of people who offered to open up their homes, and we took one of them up on it. We live in a great community.”

Online auction company makes downsizing easier MaxSold boasts 98% success rate

MaxSold, founded 60 years ago and first brought to the Atlanta area in April 2014, offers estate sale auctions online for people who want to downsize, relocate or simply get rid of some clutter.

Anything ranging from art, tools, vehicles and modern items can be found on the site. And unlike other online consumer-to-consumer companies, MaxSold curates hyperlocal auctions.

This emphasis on locality plays a key role in how the business runs.

Items aren’t shipped. Instead, MaxSold helps coordinate a pickup time and date for items by categories, with smaller items being picked up first.

MaxSold serves 30 metro areas in North America, including Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Houston and New

Jersey. Atlanta is one of the latest to join the ranks.

MaxSold set its sights on North Fulton and the metro Atlanta area because they saw that people were throwing away items they didn’t even know were valuable, according to CEO Sushee Perumal.

“Their goods were being cherry picked with the rest going to landfills,” Perumal said.

In its three-year Atlanta history, the company has more than doubled its coverage. Its first region sale was in Dunwoody, which saw all but one of its 188 listings sold – a coffee table book.

It has since grown to include most of North Atlanta, including the cities of Alpharetta, Cumming, Johns Creek and Roswell.

The first Dunwoody auction was no outlier. Perumal said the company consistently holds a 98 percent sellthrough rate.

Michael Miranda opened his restaurant in February of 2014 at 5155 Atlanta Highway inside the Mardi Gras Plaza. This wasn’t the beginning of his culinary career, though. He has been mastering the culinary arts since the age of five. He is originally from Schenectady, New York.

He moved to Georgia with his wife, Colleen, and their two kids in 2013.

Dr. Taylor, congratulations on winning Best Vein Care Specialist and Runner Up for Best Dermatologist for North Fulton 2017! What do your think has allowed for this success so quickly after opening your practice?

Dr. Taylor: “When my wife and I made the decision to move home be close to family and to open a practice that would serve our community, we knew it would be a challenging road.

And it has been! But I am just so thankful for the community’s support, for my wonderful coworkers and for my patients! I was confident in my training and in my experience as a Mohs surgeon and vein care physician, but I knew that there are a lot of moving parts to a practice, some of which I knew little about. Since opening on Jan 30th 2017, we have made a lot changes and tweaks to try to make our practice a place where patients feel heard, well cared for and valued.

How did you react to the news of winning both these titles?

To say that I was shocked and overwhelmed with appreciation for winning “Best Vain Care” Specialist and runner up for “Best Dermatologist” in North Fulton after merely 7 months of practice here in Alpharetta is an understatement. I was and am thrilled. I hope that this means that our patients realize the depth of my dedication and that my care and concern for my patients continues past 5:00pm.

As a dermatologist, how did you come to excel in the field of vein treatment?

After becoming a board-certified dermatologist, I spent a fellowship year in La Jolla, California, where I was trained by a cardiothoracic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologists in the Scripps Vein Clinic while also training in Mohs surgery. I am exceptionally proud of our Best Vein Care title, as I believe that I truly do provide patients with excellent vein care services usually provided by several different specialists. I feel so

fortunate to be able to address both medically significant vein disease as well as cosmetic venous issues. I am excited to continue to provide my patients this great service.

You mentioned “Mohs surgery” – dr. taylor what is it? And what does “MOHS” stand for?

Mohs surgery is a special technique for removing skin cancer. The word “Mohs” isn’t an acronym. Mohs is actually named after Dr. Mohs, the surgeon who first pioneered this advanced method for curing skin cancer. With Mohs surgery, a cancer is removed in layers and examined under the microscope until it is completely gone – the technique carries a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers.

As for runner up for Best Dermatologist, I never expected to be on the radar for this award so soon after opening, and I am just so glad that I have made a positive impression! I believe that my expertise in Mohs surgery likely contributed to my patients’ happiness and to this honor.

Is there anything else that you would like to share?

I do want to thank my staff for all their help. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we have been blessed with the most reliable, dedicated and genuine staff one could hope for: we have a team of very knowledgeable, experienced and energetic people working together. They care so much for our patients. It feels so wonderful to walk into work and have staff ask how patient x or patient y is doing and say they were thinking of them over the weekend. They care and it shows!

Bright, fun and fiercely independent, Mansions at Alpharetta resident Katie Croye has always done it her way.

Katie began her married life as a dedicated wife and mother and enjoyed raising her children until they entered college. With an empty nest and after the loss of her husband, she decided to “get out into the world again” and began her tenure as a professional, employed with an office supply company in West Virginia. “I got to travel some and as a widow, working gave me something to do,” said Katie.

When her job ended and with the encouragement of her children, Katie made the decision to move in with her daughter in North Carolina. “My dear daughter worried herself to death about me, and of course, I worried about living with her!”

Not wanting to be a burden, Katie decided to move closer to another daughter in Alpharetta, but not to move into her home. Senior independent living seemed the best alternative for Katie, and thankfully, her search for the perfect community didn’t last long; She became the fifth person to put down a deposit on a new construction apartment home at The Mansions at Alpharetta.

Moving to The Mansions was easier than she anticipated. When asked what was the first thing she did when she moved in to her beautiful new home, Katie replied, “I got rid of my car. I love getting in our Mansions bus and going places. No more driving for me!”

Katie also stays busy. As a proud member of The Mansions Welcoming Committee she works tirelessly meeting with new residents to make them feel at home. She says it’s a labor of love. “Our committee makes sure our new residents don’t eat alone. We go with them to many of the activities and we intro-

Katie shared, “You know, I just want to have fun and something is always going on here at The Mansions. I play bridge, my meals are served to me -I’m a great cook but I just don’t like to cook anymore. I have many very, very close friends, I have my own schedule and I enjoy every minute of living here at The Mansions.”

Founder and Director Jonnie, received her early training in Atlanta, New York City and the National Ballet School in Canada. Having taught for over 45 years, she is the Founding Artistic Director of Atlanta Dance Theatre, the official performing company for The Dancers Studio/Backstage in North Atlanta. She has taught for many major dance organizations and is active in several art organizations.

Her credits include: Regional Ballet, Musical Comedy Productions, Dinner Theatre and Touring groups, both as a

performer and a choreographer.

NORTH ATLANTA’S BIGGEST LOSER Kimberly Flowers, of Duluth, weighed 307 pounds in February of 2016 when she walked into Medical Fitness and Wellness Group of Johns Creek for a weight loss consultation. Kimberly’s primary care physician, Dr. Reshma Shah, of Perimeter North Family Medicine, advised her to start working with a personal trainer and nutritionist or consider Bariatric surgery as a last resort which Kimberly was vehemently opposed to.

The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised.

Just a few examples: We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice.

We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all.

Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on.

Wow! We just started our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of this community! My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, Dr. jordan and play in the area.

Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years.

Fulton Schools blame tax exemptions for drop in revenues

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Fulton School System officials are raising questions about the increasing trend toward tax exemptions to lure businesses to the area, and the significant impact that loss of revenue may have on school operations.

Last week the Fulton School Board adopted a millage rate of 18.546 to fund the 2017-18 school system budget -- a .044 increase from last year’s millage rate. This was the first increase in millage in Fulton County since 2010, and was necessary to maintain a revenue-neutral budget, district officials said.

School officials were quick to point out the millage increase will bring in the same amount of revenue as last year.

Even with the millage hike, Fulton Schools still faces a $15 million shortfall in FY18. Those shortages will be

made up in a number of ways, officials noted, including cuts to department budgets and withdrawals from the system’s healthy reserve funds.

Chief Financial Officer Robert Morales said the $1.5 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2018 was based on an expected 6 percent increase in property tax revenues provided to them by Fulton County tax officials last spring.

Local tax revenue makes up more than 60 percent of the system’s operating budget.

“We have subsequently learned that revenue grew less than 3 percent,” said Morales. “Additionally we learned exemptions — which are deductions to revenue — grew by more than 17 percent because of [Fulton County] Development Authority (FCDA) decisions and free port exemptions.”

Those exemptions come in the form of tax abatements and other tax-reducing incentives offered to new and expanding businesses in Fulton County.

The free port exemption was the decision by Fulton County last year to give businesses a 100 percent tax exemption on all inventory and raw materials stored temporarily in the business.

“The school system depends on

Al Nash, director of FCDA, countered the assertion that school systems are financially harmed by business incentives, pointing to a long list of studies that prove otherwise, including a recent report by Ernst and Young.

“What we are seeing is there are millions more dollars to the schools through [job creation] and direct and indirect [sources] than would have been collected without tax abatement,” said Nash.

He pointed to the Avalon development in Alpharetta which sat unused for many years, generating little tax revenue, until tax incentives spurred a developer to complete the highly profitable complex. That is only one example, he noted, of significant development encouraged by incentives.

“A piece of property may be on the tax rolls for $100,000 for years and someone comes in and does something that is now worth $20 million...that would not occur if not for tax abatement,” said Nash.

He said the free port exemption on inventory is standard practice in many states, and requires voter approval.

Nash could not say how many counties in Georgia give businesses a 100 percent exemption, as Fulton County provides.

While jobs and businesses are vital, Alpharetta school board member Katie Reeves noted business growth goes hand in hand with school growth.

“Everyone likes new businesses,” said Reeves. “But new jobs come with new students, and those new students

Superintendent Jeff Rose said he would push for more open communication between all parties; a move that was also supported by Nash of DAFC. “We need to have face-to-face communication and let people know our priorities, and the impact [these issues] have on our local taxpayers and the impact on our schools,” Rose said.
