Police investigate car theft at business MILTON, Ga. — Milton Police are investigating a car theft that occurred at a local business. The victim, an employee at the Fry’s on Webb Road, reported his silver 2009 Acura TL stolen from the store parking lot on Oct. 5.

The man said he left his front windows down and sunroof open after 5:30 p.m., but they keys were on his person.

Another employee took his break around 7:30 p.m. and, while seated in his car, saw a white van park beside the Acura. Then, he said a woman stood beside the van “as if she was a lookout.”

A man from the van then opened the Acura’s door, setting off the alarm. The witness said he saw the man bend down under the dash of the vehicle before the

alarm stopped.

The witness said he was unable to see anything else because a car door was blocking his view and he returned to work. The witness said he assumed the people from the van were friends of the victim and were talking with him alongside the car.

Pedestrian killed on Milton road MILTON, Ga. — A man was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross New Providence Road around midnight on Oct. 8. The victim, pronounced dead at the scene, was identified as Thomas Herbert Joe, 69, of Sandy Springs.

The incident occurred at the intersection of New Providence Road and Old National Drive around 11:30 p.m.

The incident is still under investigation and as Oct. 12 no charges had been filed, according to Charles Fannon, investigator with the Milton Crash Response Team.

Business partner scams woman out of $30,000 MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman fell victim to theft by deception with a supposed business partner scamming her out of $30,000.

The victim said she and a potential business partner, known to her as Hakeem Carter, obtained a business loan from a Milton bank in February. Under

Driver arrested for DUI after crashing into ditch MILTON, Ga. — An Alpharetta man was arrested for DUI and other charges after a witness reported the man crashed into a ditch.

Milton Police received a call from a resident stating he witnessed a white Jeep Wrangler drive off the road along Freemanville Road. The witness said he turned around and called 911.

When he returned to the accident scene, he did not see the Jeep. He waited in the area and eventually saw the Jeep exit a nearby road with its headlights off, dragging tree limbs under the car.

The witness followed the Jeep which ran off the road several more times according to the witness.

City continues efforts to incentivize large residential lots

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council sweetened its incentives to encourage low density residential development Oct. 8 by streamlining the permit process for lots 3 acres and larger.

The city has studied measures to incentivize plats of 3 acres or more since last November.

Under the previous ordinance, residential developments went before the Planning Commission for review after city staff determined the application complete. The revised ordinance eliminates that requirement for larger lots.

Instead, the city’s Community Development director can approve the preliminary plat.

The council also discussed including language that would allow city staff

some flexibility in granting the waivers for developments at or near the 3-acre threshold.

Acting Community Development Director Carter Lucas said one example would be a four-home development where one plot is 2.9 acres.

In situations where the intent still meets the ideal of large lots, the neighborhood could still receive inducements with the waiver.

The council also discussed only allowing public gravel roads in subdivisions if the lots are 3 acres or larger.

The city’s ongoing efforts to encourage large lots also include potential changes to stormwater and sidewalk requirements.

Another potential incentive, the council said, would involve the current requirement that all portions of a home must be within 600 feet of a fire

hydrant. After consulting with local Fire Department officials, the council said that distance could be increased to 800 feet for larger lots.

Milton has also entered a contract to study the feasibility of encouraging large lots through its Transfer of Development Rights program.

The program allows landowners the ability to waive the right to develop their land and to transfer those development rights to a different parcel of land.

The city is drafting an update to its tree ordinance and could include language that reduces tree recompense on large lots, Lucas said.

Jones highlights tax breaks in homestead exemption referendums

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton state Rep. Jan Jones outlined three homestead exemption referendums on the Nov. 6 general election ballot at the City Council’s Oct. 8 meeting.

Following outcry over a sharp increase in assessed home values over the past three years, legislation passed in March will allow Milton residents to vote on a law that will cap future increases

on homesteaded property values at 3 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower.

The legislation also rolls back the values on homes to the lowest level over the past three years. If passed, homeowners would need to apply for the exemption

by April 1, 2019. Residents who already receive the exemption would not need to reapply, Jones said.

Homeowners who purchase a Milton home prior to Jan. 1 can still apply for the exemption. Homes sold after Dec. 31

State Rep. Jan Jones (center) outlined homestead tax exemption referendums on the Nov. 6 ballot during the City Council’s Oct. 8 meeting. will be subjected to the prior year’s assessed values.

Another referendum on the ballot uses the same exemption process regarding Fulton County School taxes.

Jones reiterated that the exemptions are only available for homes used as a primary residence, which excludes commercial or rental properties.

The third referendum is a homestead exemptions for all Fulton residents over 65 years old. If approved, the measure would provide a $50,000 exemption from Fulton County ad valorem taxes.

Milton already provides a $15,000 exemption for senior residents.

Fulton County is one of a few metro counties that does not provide a school

tax exemption for seniors, but the Nov. 6 referendum could be the first step in drafting such a bill, Jones said.

The Fulton County School Board has stated they do not have details on how many senior residents are within the county, and the district is in the dark as to what a senior school tax exemption would cost the system, Jones said.

“They do not track age, and neither does the Tax Assessor’s Office,” Jones said. “But a minor senior exemptions at the county level will allow us to figure out how many people, 65 and over, would apply for a senior exemption.

Then we can have a reasonable and informed discussion with the school board about some level of exemption.”

Neighborhood street work grabs majority of new Alpharetta project funding

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — City leaders have committed another $2 million to major capital projects this year, dropping most of it in resurfacing work on Alpharetta streets.

The action comes three months after the city formally adopted its budget for the fiscal year, which runs from July through June. City officials decided to wait till now to begin allocating some of the nearly $5 million it had set aside for capital projects because of uncertainty in anticipated revenues.

They needn’t have worried, though, because revenues from property taxes are expected to come in stronger than anticipated, thanks in part to an increase of 14 percent in property values.

Mayor Jim Gilvin said another reason for the delay was that the City Council had at least two new members seated in May who had not had the opportunity to absorb the budget process from its beginning.

The list of new capital projects includes $1 million for milling and resurfacing of neighborhood streets.

Council members had argued that one

of the best ways to pay back taxpayers for a higher tax bill this year due to higher valuation would be to improve residential streets.

The approved capital budget passed in June already includes $2.5 million for this work.

The extra street work comes as the city is already in the first two years of a massive spending plan that will pour close to $100 million of local money into streets, sidewalks and pathways.

More than half that local money, about $63 million, comes from the city’s share from a countywide transportation sales tax passed in 2016.

The remainder, about $26 million, is part of a $52 million bond Alpharetta voters approved two years ago.

The updated capital spending budget for this year also includes $60,000 for conceptual design work on widening Wills Road south of Milton Avenue to Old Milton Parkway.

Councilman John Hipes had commented in August that the city needs to take the lead in opening pathways for student traffic when the new STEM school begins classes in the fall of 2020.

Other initiatives approved for capital funding include: $250,000 for Buice Road traffic calming.

Earlier this month, the city signed an agreement with the City of Johns Creek to share costs of traffic calming measures, such as roundabouts, along the route between Kimball Bridge and Jones Bridge roads.

Although the road itself falls under the jurisdiction of Johns Creek, providing access to its Ocee Park, residents on either side of the street are Alpharetta citizens.

Real world stress of life off the trail The last few months have been, let’s say, interesting.

I got back from my hike on the John Muir Trail at the end of August. It was a good, albeit really hard, hike, about 200 miles Ray appen and almost a month Publisher long. I doubt I will ray@appenmediagroup.com ever underestimate again the impact that elevation has when one is trying to walk, hike, climb or just move. It’s a whole different ballgame.

When I got back — just like when I returned from my Appalachian Trail hike — I figured I would just jump right back into reality. In both cases that was how it went — for a very short while. Then, reality’s smiling face gave me a quick poke in the ribs, reminding me that, yep, life on the trail is way different from life off it.

On the John Muir, I was without cell service most of the time. That trail is remote. Almost every night initially I had panic attacks — something that I have never had in my life — thinking

about “what if.” On that trail if something happens you are almost always roughly 15 to 25 miles away from a paved road or anything resembling civilization. And those 15-20 miles are hard miles.

No phone calls for help. No ambulances coming to get you. No law. Just you, the other hikers and unforgiving mountains.

About two weeks after returning to Alpharetta, I realized something was different, something subtle. Then it dawned on me; I felt unhealthy.

I could feel it in how I moved. I could smell it when I sweated — it was different.

And I could feel the difference from one day to the next. Each day I felt incrementally less well. Once I realized what this feeling was I started thinking about it.

Part of the cause was not rocket science. I was not eating healthy back home. On the trail my nourishment was basic, but it was consistent and it was healthy — lots of water, protein and fiber meal replacement, lots of peanut butter, nuts, and raisins — no sugar, no processed food, no ice cream, no sodas, no fast food. On

the trail I stayed hungry but it was a healthy hungry and my body felt like it was burning all the calories it had access to and leaving an empty but healthy engine waiting for more fuel.

The second issue I instantly recognized was that I was not exercising, again — just like after I returned from the AT. I didn’t exercise for about two years after completing the AT. Why? Mostly because of a general weakness of internal fortitude and character combined with hikers “post-trail depression” — something I think is very real and that most long distance hikers experience.

Neither reason was an acceptable excuse to me.

I have always believed that we are in charge with how our lives go — at least most of the time.

The third culprit that was sinking my post-trail life I realized was a six letter word — “stress” — largely selfinduced.

Of the three, I believe the last one is by far the most debilitating, and it is linked to and to a degree regulated by how one manages the first two — nutrition and exercise.

Stress is possibly the most toxic

disease human beings face. I am sure that it is directly linked to most if not all of the big killers — heart disease, cancer, diabetes and more. The stress I felt off the trail, now in hindsight, I realize was multiple times greater than how I felt out there hiking. The difference in stress was like a hard slap in the face with an ice-cold towel.

Life on the trail for any length of time removes one from almost everything that constitutes “modern life” and “civilization.” Your day goes from driving in traffic, answering and making phone calls, catching news reports about how our lives and values are imploding and how limited our power is to do anything about it, to life on the trail which involves only five things — hiking, eating, finding water, setting up camp and sleeping.

Period. Nothing more. Nothing.

While this probably sounds defeatist, I maintain I have always seen the glass half full. I will always see opportunity in any situation and believe that the bad stuff, if you have faith, patience, and strength, always passes and the sunrise will be beautiful,

Breast cancer survivors share hope through photos

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — For many breast cancer survivors, their battle with the disease leaves them insecure about their looks.

So it’s a courageous move to take part in a photoshoot of survivors, but that’s exactly what Gloria Wyatt did earlier this month as part of the Warrior Within photoshoot.

The event was orchestrated to empower women to see their beauty from the inside out, despite cancer holding them hostage for parts of their lives.

Organized by Biviana “Bivi” Franco, the program is part of Feel Beautiful Today which has provided “Arts in Health” programs to cancer patients and survivors in Georgia since 2010.

“I wanted to exude the spirit of the warrior that was inside many patients we’ve come across,” Franco said. “A beautiful way to try to showcase this was through a photographic narrative exhibit. We provided photography and

a beautiful message that the patients wanted to send out. It shared awareness to the community and allowed the patients a voice.”

As a former Northside Hospital employee, Wyatt was diligent in getting her annual mammogram and selfexams.

It wasn’t until she was offered a 3D mammogram in 2012 when her tumor was found hiding behind tissue for the past few years. Her diagnosis was of Stage 3 breast cancer, and she eventually lost her hair during treatment.

“Even though I did all the things I should, I was a bit taken aback,” Wyatt said. “Now I tell everyone we have this technology and I encourage all women to do the 3D.” Now six years later, Wyatt is flaunting the confidence and internal beauty she found, much of it reclaimed through the project. She has also come back to Northside Hospital working part time.

Winning the war on opioids

By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor If you have not experienced a personal loss resulting from the current epidemic of opioid addiction, you may be totally unaware of who is being affected by the rampant and indiscriminate destruction around us.

Chadwick Individually, more people die from prescription drug use every three days in America than all of those who died in 9/11. If this epidemic were a terrorist plot – if these deaths were the result of an act of war by a known enemy, the outcry would be loud and long. The death toll would rank it as the most successful terrorist action ever waged in the free world.

The poorly informed assume that those affected are the disadvantaged dregs of society. People who by their own sad self-indulgence, fuel the proliferation of these poisons. We might find it easy to believe that we are safe, that the failure to avoid addiction is the moral defeat of the weak. Instead it is now the leading cause of death in people under 50 in the US. Clearly federal leadership is lagging far behind.

Why? Because the makers of opioids have spent more than $800 million lobbying our legislators into indifference…and submission. To offer some scope, the heavily funded gun lobby spent only $100 million in the same period.

Milton High inducts Hall of Fame members

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Five Milton High School graduates donned the red jackets of the Milton Hall of Fame at an induction ceremony during halftime of the Eagle’s Oct. 5 football game. The inductees, include a current NFL player, a former school principal and the first female athlete to receive a full scholarship. All were honored with the distinction and escorted onto the field by current students.

Peyton Barber, a 2013 graduate, was the youngest inductee. A running back for the Eagles, Barber rushed for 1,700 yards and 22 touchdowns during his time at Milton. Barber competed at the collegiate level with Auburn, was named the 2015 Offensive Player of the Year and rushed for over 1,000 yards with 13 touchdowns.

He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in May 2016 and is currently the starting running back.

Milton alum Karen Head, executive director of the communication center at Georgia Tech, was also honored. Head, a 1985 grad, is the recipient of the Oxford International Women’s Festival Poetry Prize and serves as the editor of the international poetry journal, Atlanta Review. Head has published four poetry books and co-edited a poetry anthology.

Former Milton teacher and coach Van Keys, a 1979 alum, was also inducted.

Keys worked for Fulton County Schools for 32 years and spent 27 years at Milton. Keys was teacher in the physical education department and was named the athletic director. He served as a head coach for the boys varsity basketball

team and the girls varsity tennis team, and was an assistant coach in football, baseball, softball and track.

Tina Blalock Smith, the first female athlete to earn a full athletic scholarship and 1980 valedictorian, was also honored.

Smith served as the co-captain of the girls basketball team from 197880, leading the Eagles to two region championships and the Fulton County title. Smith was named to the North Fulton All-Star team, the Fulton County All-Star team, the Atlanta Tip-Off Club Team of the Year, All-State Honorable Mention, All-State Second Team, Region 5-A All-Star team, Region 4-AAA All-Star team, and Region 4-AAA North All-Tournament team.

During her playing career at Milton, she amassed 14 school records before competing with Georgia Tech at the collegiate level. Smith is a currently a math tutor.

Former principal Phil Thomas was also inducted to the Hall of Fame.

Thomas began his tenure at the school in 1971 as a social studies teacher and later served as the social studies department head. He was named principal in 1986 and served in that role until 1998.

Under Thomas’ direction, Milton was named to the 100 best schools in the country by USA Today, received a Blue Ribbon award as a Georgia School of Excellence and was nominated for the national Blue Ribbon schools program.

Thomas received the first Governor’s Innovation Award for promoting the use of technology in the classroom.

In 1998, Thomas was named the director of instructional technology for the Georgia Department of Education. He is currently a consultant for the Georgia Accrediting Commission.

Fulton Schools land 3 on Blue Ribbon list Lake Windward, Shakerag elementary earn 2018 honors NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Three elementary schools in the Fulton County School System were named 2018 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education – the most ever named in the same year in Fulton’s history. Lake Windward and Shakerag elementary schools in Johns Creek, along with Heards Ferry elementary in Sandy Springs, join a select group of 349 public and private schools across the nation to earn the distinction this year.

“This honor affirms the hard work of our teachers, staff, students and parents, all of whom deserve credit for motivating and encouraging students to perform at their highest level,” said Fulton Superintendent Jeff Rose.

All three Fulton schools were recognized in the “Exemplary High Performing” category, placing them among Georgia’s highest performing schools based on state assessments or nationally normed tests. In all, eight public schools and five private schools, including Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Johns

Creek, received National Blue Ribbon recognition in 2018.

Now in its 36th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has recognized more than 8,800 schools across the country. Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year.

On Nov. 7, representatives from the Fulton School System and the 2018 Blue Ribbon schools will travel to Washington, D.C., to be honored by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos at the annual awards ceremony.

There, schools will receive a plaque and flag in recognition of the achievement.

The Fulton School System now has 15 schools recognized as National Blue Ribbon schools. LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

High school bands deserve recognition Dear Editor, As a previous Cambridge High School band alumni, I am pleasantly surprised by your recent article pertaining to high school football halftime shows. Never have I read something that spoke so closely to my heart.

My experience in the band has instilled in me a passion for the unrecognized efforts of an institution. This being said, I completely agree with your claim about students and football players needing to support their school bands during halftime. Too many times I had walked out on the field and realized that all of my hard work and time had gone to something that no one truly acknowledged.

All week long the band members work together to create a show that is designed to introduce a powerful feeling to the audience. This can be a difficult task when the audience is less than willing to give the band the time of day. The purpose of a halftime show is not just to excite and bring out school pride within the audience, but it is also to keep the crowd amped up in order for the football players to perform at their best.

Would it not make sense to have the football players and cheerleaders do the same for the band? I believe that incorporating the football players as well as the cheerleaders will help bring in the excitement that the band truly deserves.

History in the making Groups merge to commemorate Armistice Day centennial

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — It’s only fitting that groups dedicated to preserving history would set out to make a little history of their own.

For the first time since they were formed, historical societies from Alpharetta, Roswell and Johns Creek are collaborating to commemorate a single event: the 100th anniversary of the end of hostilities in World War I — “The War to End All Wars.”

It occurred on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

To recognize the occasion, the Alpharetta and Old Milton County Historical Society will host an afternoon program Nov. 11 that includes historic displays, a guest speaker and a chance for visitors to mingle with their neighbors.

It will be a reunion of sorts, because North Fulton cities share a lot of the same history, including genealogy.

“I went to the Johns Creek meeting last night because their speaker was my third cousin,” said Pat Miller, president of the Alpharetta and Old Milton County Historical Society. “I had communicated with him by email, but we’d actually never met. That was kind of fun.”

Miller is spearheading a drive to bring North Fulton historical societies together in a loose-knit umbrella they hope will expand memberships and heighten interest in local history.

“It’s the first time we’ve gotten together to do a project, so we’re pretty excited about it,” she said.

The program starts at 2 p.m., Nov. 11, with a social gathering in the meeting area of Alpharetta City Hall, just outside the new museum. Displays of World War I memorabilia from area historical societies will be set up for visitors to the museum. The exhibit, which runs for about 10 days, will feature some special items.

Autrey Mills Nature Preserve and Heritage Center in Johns Creek is loaning a World War I uniform. Roswell Historical Society will display an historic service flag from the era.

At 2:30 p.m., local historian Michael Hitt will share research he has discovered about North Fulton residents who distinguished themselves during the war years.

Honored guests from neighboring historical societies are on board for the event.

“We’ve been trying to collaborate in more informal ways, but this is the first formalized event that we’re going to have together,” said Juliet Johnson, Roswell Historical Society president. “I’m really looking forward to it, and I think our members are going to get a lot out of it as well.”

Johnson said her organization is loaning a number of pieces for the Alpharetta museum display.

Fulton historical coalition so we can share some of our resources,” Johnson said. “We tend to have some of the same speakers, so if we can mix it up and maybe have more collaboration, we can attract some different names to speak before our societies and our membership can mingle more.”

Those who know the area’s history, she said, know much of North Fulton is intertwined.

“A lot of the families that have lived in this area over the last 100 years, many of them moved from, say, Gwinnett to what’s now Milton or Roswell,” she said. “There’s a lot of mingling of these families.”

Johns Creek Historical Society President Joan Compton said the collaboration is bound to boost her young organization.

“We’re less than 2 years old, so being able to collaborate with these established historical societies, for one thing, it gives us more credibility,” she said. “It certainly widens our audience.”

As a young organization, Compton said the Johns Creek Historical Society is still finding its footing, and the neighboring organizations have already helped in that regard.

One disadvantage, she said, is Johns Creek has only existed as a city for 10 years, so a lot of the local history was not saved.

“So we’re really scurrying, trying to save what’s left before people move out of town or children dispose of things we think are important,” she said.

Also, Johns Creek has no repository.

Collections are being stored for now at the homes of board members. The organization is in discussions with the city to get space for an archive and a research library in the new city hall.

Even so, Compton said interest has been brisk.

“Our attendance is about the same as Alpharetta’s, so we’re getting a lot of interest,” she said. “It’s developing fast, snowballing faster than I expected.”

Gypsy Rose brings live music to downtown Roswell

Gypsy Rose, a new music venue, will occupy the same building that once housed Classy Clutter on Alpharetta Street.

Some of Crooms’ favorite music genres for the venue range between blues, funk, Americana, jam, southern rock and indie.

“People can expect to find an upbeat and comfortable venue full of good vibes and a staff that will quickly feel like family,” Crooms said. “We are strategically selecting the most talented musicians to perform, and patrons can expect quality music they won’t see anywhere else in this area.”

When it is not putting on concerts and shows, the 2,700 square foot building will host workshops, classes and camps for singer-songwriters and budding musicians. Live band karaoke and themed parties are also slated to become regular events.

Crooms said she plans for every inch of Gypsy Rose to be devoted to some form of the arts. The walls, for example, will serve as a rotating gallery for local artists.

“By nature, music brings people together and builds a bridge for different generations and people of varying cultural and political beliefs to all come together in a shared passion,” Crooms said. “It helps promote acceptance and deeper connections. My main goal is to support artists’ dreams and strengthen the relationships between members of this community I love and call home.”

In addition to hosting music and art, Gypsy Rose will also host rotating food trucks and serve a selection of local and

craft beers and cocktails.

“Roswell is regionally known for our strong hospitality industry, and with the recent growth of this sector, there’s been a growing need for live entertainment and event spaces,” said Steve Stroud, executive director of Roswell Inc. “Gypsy Rose is satisfying two major markets while bringing a new dynamic to our popular Historic District.”

Crooms will serve as Gypsy Rose’s venue manager. She has already secured a sales and marketing director, booking agent, sound engineer and beverage manager. She plans to hire seven to eight bartenders and four cocktail servers before opening.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Music fans rejoice – a new music venue is opening soon in Roswell’s Historic District.

Gypsy Rose Music, founded by local resident Brittany Crooms, an intimate venue devoted to original Crooms live music and private events is slated to open by the end of the year. It will be located at 964 Alpharetta St., near Canton Street, in the same building previously occupied by Classy Clutter.

Crooms is opening the venue out of a passion for merging music, entertainment and community.

She said she has loved music from a young age and nurtured it with singing and acting. That passion only grew once she moved to Athens, where she regularly worked closely with local musicians and bands.

After she moved to Roswell a year ago, Crooms said she felt inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit and drive that the city’s business owners are known for, and eventually, created the concept for Gypsy Rose.

“As a community-loving resident and passionate music lover, I began to crave somewhere where these two things collide,” Crooms said. “The more I talked to people, the more others seemed to want somewhere devoted to original live music with a vision similar to mine.”

Current plans call for Gypsy Rose to be open Wednesdays through Sundays.

Downtown Gulch mobilizes city As an outsider looking in, with high rises seeming to break ground on a monthly basis, I take for granted that the City of Atlanta sometimes has similar conflicts as other metro cities when a Geoff smith new project is subAssurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com mitted for approval.

The proposed Gulch development has started a debate that has mobilized groups all over the city to weigh in and try to move it along.

If you are not familiar the Gulch, it is about 40 acres of parking lots and rail lines that sit just east of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Most of the property sits well below street level, and initial plans are to bring all of it up to street-level in the way of a platform. This alone is estimated to take three years. Once built, developers and planners are envisioning 15 brand-new city blocks with roads, sidewalks, bike lanes, gathering spaces and parks. The developer’s plan is to add between 1.8 million and 9.3 million square feet of office space — a big stretch that leaves the door open for a major company to agree to move in and drastically influence how it is developed.

And yes, it has been said that the Gulch would be a top target should Amazon decide to move its headquarters here.

But even if the project was only about building the city blocks on raw land, it would be massive in scale. To raise the street level makes it a massively massive project. A developer friend of mine told me there are probably only a handful of developers who would be able to attempt such a project. The entire thing has been estimated to cost up to $5 billion. Because of the immense cost of just preparing the site for development, the developer has asked the city of Atlanta for up to $1.75 billion in public financing — and that is where the rub is coming from. The public financing would

come in the way of tax incentives.

Some on the Atlanta City Council are listening to some citizens and advocacy groups who claim the city is giving away a chance to secure a major income stream.

“You’re giving almost $2 billion away for a $5 billion deal,” Deborah Scott, executive director of the downtown community advocacy group Georgia StandUP, was quoted as saying in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. “We want the Gulch to develop one day….This is not the deal.”

No one seems to be arguing in favor of not developing the Gulch. There’s no real way to make a case for it needing to remain as it is – which is a kind of dark hole surrounded by office buildings and the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

But because of the complexity in improving the site and readying it for development, many view the current project, which has been brought forward by Los Angeles developer CIM Group, as a gift that should not be turned away.

“From our view, redeveloping the Gulch is an imperative,” said Hala Moddelmog, president and CEO of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce in a prepared statement. “Delaying or dismissing this opportunity is not optional. It may be decades before another developer puts forth the time and resources to turn one of our city’s greatest economic development challenges into the opportunity of a lifetime.”

In addition to taking on a task very few developers would want to take on, City Council members also credit the developer with agreeing to several conditions that would benefit the community.

Those include putting aside $28 million for affordable housing, $12 million for economic development, $12 million to enlarge a nearby fire station and $5 million to replace a bridge connecting the Gulch to the Castleberry Hill neighborhood.

Commercial realtor JLL in Atlanta put out an Op-Ed in the Atlanta Business Chronicle that endorsed the project, saying “the development...will connect areas of downtown that have been partitioned for decades, rejoining Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the newly renovated State Farm Arena, CNN Center, Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia World Congress Center, Underground Atlanta, Five Points MARTA station and Downtown proper. Our downtown will no longer be a collection of interests isolated from one another.

Instead, it will be a more cohesive and walkable community.”

The Council seemed to be split at a recent meeting and it will be interesting to see how this project moves forward.

NORTH FULTON, Ga. — As Halloween approaches, public safety officers aim to educate the public about how to stay safe during the holiday.

“My goal is just getting people to slow down and be careful,” said Officer Madhusudana Meberg with the Johns Creek Police Department.

The department recommends trickor-treating before dark if possible.

If after dark, families should bring a flashlight and walk facing the traffic.

Wearing reflective tape is an extra precaution parents can take.

As always, pedestrians should look both ways before crossing the street and use sidewalks whenever possible.

Police recommend not crossing over lawns because they may have unseen objects or uneven ground that can cause someone to trip and fall.

Trick-or-treaters should only go up to houses that have a light on, preferably only homes where they know someone. Police recommend never going into strangers’ homes, instead let them bring the treats to the door.

Parents can inspect their children’s candy to ensure everything is factory wrapped. Avoid homemade treats unless you know the person well.

If a child is old enough to go out without their family, parents should discuss their route and a set a firm time to expect them to return home.

Drivers should be extra careful on Halloween.

Not only should they be wary of the children walking around, but drunk driving incidents often increase on the holiday, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Fire departments have their own recommendations.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends using battery-operated candles or glow sticks in jack-olanterns. If families use candles, they should teach children to stay away from open flames.

People should also be conscious of fire risks as they decorate and pick out their costume. Police and fire departments recommend wearing costumes that fit and not wear clothes with long trailing fabric. Face paint is preferable to masks, but if your costume must include a mask, make sure you can see, hear and breathe easily.

All exists should be clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.

Decorations like dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper catch fire easily and should be kept away from open flames, light bulbs, heaters and stoves.

From 2011-2015, decorations placed too close to heat sources started an average of 840 home fires per year, according to NFPA. These fires caused an average of 2 deaths, 36 injuries and $11.4 million in direct property damage per year.

Frights and fun to be had at Spooky Mill

By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Autrey Mill Nature Preserve will host Halloween fun at its 13th annual Spooky Mill festival Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Attendees can trick-or-treat in Heritage Village and purchase tickets for activities, such as a haunted house and trail, mad scientist lab, fortune teller, craft station, face paint, carnival games, bouncy house and more.

Each attraction costs 1 to 3 tickets.

Tickets are $1 each or 25 for $20.

“Rain or shine, so many great people come out, and they enjoy the event,” Autrey Mill Operations Manager Lauren McDaniel said. “So much of the community gives back for the event.”

The event is family-friendly and fun for all ages, McDaniel said. At the haunted house and trail, guests are given “Power Up Rings” so if at any point

the scares become too intense, they can hold up their rings and move straight to the end of the attraction.

For even milder frights, Junior Spooky Mill will take place Sunday, Oct. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. This event for preschoolers costs $5 per child.

Visitors of all ages are encouraged to dress in their scariest or silliest costumes.

Between now and the weekend of the festival, Autrey Mill visitors can vote on what costume Pebbles the tortoise will wear to the festival and help decorate the grounds with spider webs.

“Spooky Mill is a great family opportunity. I would love to spend the night with Pebbles in a Halloween costume, wouldn’t you?” McDaniel said.

Trail: Continued from Page 8 nourishing, and redeeming. It’s just that I suspect it is very hard to see how screwed up our modern life has become if one has not been able to step away from it — far enough away — to put it in perspective.

Vacations usually don’t take us away from the worst of it. Until we park most of our modern day stressors on the side of the road, it is almost impossible to see the color of the poison we try to live in each day.

On the trail one of the mantras has always been to “hike your own hike,” and I feel sure that applies to our lives off the trail. We’re all different.

So, what I need to do — again — is reengineer how I live. It will start simply; I will again be at the YMCA at 4:45 in the morning most mornings waiting for them to open at 5:00 a.m., and not leave until around 6:30, close to exhausted but an empty and clean exhausted.

I will also get my running shoes on again and get back to the backboard with my tennis racquet. That is step one.

Once I get that down, it causes me to self-correct and move onto steps two and three. It’s a chain reaction. The health/exercise and the nutrition steps will be by far the easiest ones. Neutralizing or eliminating stress — much of it caused by the internet and modern forms of communication — will be much more of a challenge. I know I have the ability and shall eventually get back to this better place — a healthier place, a more sustainable one.

I have seen what our lives used to be like before we were overwhelmed by the pace and demands of modern life, and I have, for a few short amounts of time, lived that life.

It’s worth the hard work to go back to it. It is.

“This was such a great opportunity for all of us who’ve been through a period in our lives where we’ve been sick, punched, gouged, poked and lost all our hair,” she said. “Most of us have had mastectomies or lumpectomies. We went through a period where we don’t feel like ourselves or that we’re pretty.

There are so many emotions you go through. This was a chance to celebrate, and it definitely was.”

During the Oct. 4 photoshoot, Wyatt danced, laughed and sang.

“It was the first time I had truly felt freed and pretty,” she said. “It was so important to me. I felt like the person has to feel good about themselves before they can help others.

My prayer while I was going through it, as God allowed, was to give back to other women going through this.”

She’s been able to speak to other women and host talks to help others, which she credits to her cancer.

“Had I not had this experience, I wouldn’t be able to help people the way I do now,” Wyatt said. “When I was going through the worst of it, I had some-

one tell me there’d be a day I’d say I would go through all this again.

At the time I was sick and bald and thought no. But today, looking back and knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t change a thing.”

This is exactly what Franco was hoping for when she created the program because as someone with many loved ones impacted by cancer, she saw firsthand how it changed her family.

“I saw how much they needed support in so many ways,” she said. “I just wanted to help and I tried to provide a positive opportunity for them to hopefully redirect their thoughts into something more creative. I wanted to let them know I’m there for them.”

Many of the other patients identify with the words being shared, Franco said.

“We wanted people to be reminded of the human being inside the patient,” she said. “Often, we tend to forget and get stuck with the idea of it being a cancer patient. They’re a human just like you and me who has dreams, families and goals. Now they’re in this journey, but cancer doesn’t define them.”

Alpharetta volleyball captures region championship three-peat

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta volleyball continued its stellar season and captured its third straight region title Oct. 11 by downing Pope for the 7-AAAAAA championship. The Greyhounds were a familiar foe to Alpharetta. A day before their region title match, the Raiders downed Pope in two sets to none.

“It’s been tight matches every time we play them,” said Alpharetta head coach Grace Fossier. “It’s a lot of work to beat them. Both teams know each other well and are able to quickly adjust and counter.”

The familiarity was evident after the opening set. Alpharetta led by at least four points throughout much of the first set and took a 25-18 win. But in the second, Pope used a 4-0 run to start the set and led throughout to claim the set, 25-15.

“Pope is a good serving and passing team,” Fossier said. “And with any team, once you get some momentum going it’s tough to stop. We had to stop that bleeding and get out of that and we did.”

Alpharetta had a safety net entering the decisive third set. They had not lost in the double-elimination tournament, and with Pope’s loss to Alpharetta in the semifinals, the Greyhounds needed two match wins to claim the region title.

Alpharetta built a narrow lead early in the set behind multiple kills from sophomore Evoni Lemons and senior Bria Plante. The Raiders extended the margin to 13-6 with a well-placed hit from Emily Hodsdon and blocks from Nina Williams and Plante. However, Pope countered with a 5-0 run and claimed its first lead of the set, 17-15. Another kill from Williams and two Pope errors allowed Alpharetta to reclaim the lead, but Pope again tied the do-or-die set at 19. With each team reeling, Alpharetta seized on a Pope error, a block and two kills from Lemons to claim the 25-21 set and third region title.

The Raiders improved to an impressive 43-4 mark this season and have solidified themselves as a powerhouse in Class 6A. The relatively young team, with just two seniors — Jenna Seides and Plante — will look to continue their streak of deep playoff runs. Alpharetta has finished as the Class 6A state runner up to Harrison the past two seasons.

“It’s been a special year so far and I’m excited for them,” Fossier said. “They know there is work to be done, but they’re willing to put in the work and they have great chemistry.”

Fossier said the focus for the playoffs is simple and a key to their success — passing and defense. The Raiders will host the No. 4 team from Region 6 in the first round of the state tournament on Oct. 20.

Roswell debuts month-long art installation

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Visitors to Roswell’s Historic Square will see a dazzling addition to the grounds this month.

In celebration of the National Arts and Humanities Month, the City of Roswell and the Recreation, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department have brought the temporary art installation “From the Ground Up,” by local artist Ruth Stanford.

The exhibit is presented by Dashboard US, an Atlanta-based organization that specializes in artist-led projects to help re-imagine environments. It will only be available to see in Roswell through Oct. 31.

“From the Ground Up” is a stainedglass house that is lit up from the inside.

The colors shift and change as night approaches.

“This piece creates sincere excitement and joy as the sun sets and the color shifts,” said Community Relations

Manager Julie Brechbill. “The brightly colored house is representative of the impact art and culture has within neighborhoods and communities – creating vibrancy and illuminating connections between individuals, while defining a place to ignite conversations and dialogue.”

“From the Ground Up” was previously part of a larger exhibit – “Arts at Oakland: Golden Hour” – which was on display in May at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. This exhibit was made up of 11 pieces from local artists that meditated on ideas of beauty, healing, despair and anxiety by playing with sunlight and shadows. It was voted as Creative Loafing Atlanta’s “Best of ATL – Best Gallery Show/Art Exhibit (Reader’s Choice)” for September.

Sanford, the creative mind behind “From the Ground Up,” is an associate professor of sculpture at Georgia State University. She frequently explores ideas of presence and absence, conscious and unconscious, and fiction and reality in

Renovated library brings together arts community

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A stream of more than 300 people passed a freshly cut ribbon Oct. 4 to get their first look at the new $3.3 million Alpharetta Arts Center.

Local, county and state dignitaries hailed the event, commenting that the transformed building, which once served as a Fulton County Library branch, will now transform the community.

Mayor Jim Gilvin said the concept for a building to serve the city’s burgeoning arts community began a few years after the 2011 bond referendum to fund Alpharetta’s downtown City Center project.

During the planning process, he said, the mayor and council members came upon the idea of locating a new, stateof-the-art library facility to the heart of the city.

Finally, an agreement was struck for what was, in essence, a land swap, whereby Alpharetta donated land in its City Center in exchange for the old

library property at Mayfield Road and Canton Street.

From the start, Gilvin said, the arts community came forward to promote the use of the building for the arts.

The mayor also called out City Councilman Donald Mitchell for his efforts at seeing the project through to its completion, shepherding it over funding obstacles and design alterations.

Mitchell was unable to attend the opening, but Gilvin asked everyone in attendance to shake his hand and thank him for his work on the project.

“There’s nobody in this city who loves the arts more than Donald Mitchell,” Gilvin said.

County officials also praised the newly redesigned center.

“It’s fabulous. It’s more than we could have expected,” said Fulton County Commissioner Liz Hausmann.

“The grounds are beautiful. Look at the crowd here.”

Hausmann noted the property swap between the county and the city was completed for $1, and it has become a great deal for both.

“Obviously, this is a welcome addition to the community,” she said. “It’s everything we could’ve asked for.”

arts studio that seats about 50. It also includes gallery space and space for lectures and other arts events.

Ben Hollingsworth, co-chair of Arts Alpharetta, said after many years, local arts organizations now have a venue to practice, teach and display their talents.

“It’s going to be a very active place,” he said. “We’re very excited for the future and how the community is going to be involved in this wonderful place.”

Johns Creek downs Cambridge to extend win streak

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Johns Creek extended its win streak to five games and remained atop the Region 7-AAAAAAA standings with a 38-20 win over Cambridge in Milton Friday night.

The win will likely not go down as the Gladiators’ prettiest of the year after they incurred 11 penalties and had some assignment issues, according to head coach Matt Helmerich. But the Gladiators used another impressive offensive performance and limited Cambridge’s playmakers to power the win.

“We’re coming off a few pretty good games of fundamental football,” Helmerich said. “We preached all week Cambridge beat us last year, they’re very well coached and Johns Creek has never beaten Cambridge. We made some silly mistakes. Cambridge is a good football team and they capitalized for the most part in the first half.”

Despite a sluggish start, the Gladiators racked up 501 total offensive yards.

Quarterback Zach Gibson connected with seven receivers and went 26-29 for 373 yards with three touchdowns.

Yong Min Lee led all receivers with 159 yards, including an 86-yard touchdown.

Giovanni Dyer had nine receptions for 101 yards, and Matt Casey and Dalton Pearson each had over 50 yards receiving.

“Gibson made some incredible plays tonight that got us going, and the offensive line is getting better each week,” Helmerich said.

The Gladiators then used 11 plays to advance to the Bears’ 35-yard line but faced a fourth-and-12. Receiver Giovanni Dyer, who had implored his coaches to go for the conversion, caught a slant at the 7-yard line and fought his way into the end zone to put the Gladiators up 10-0.

The Gladiators extended the margin two minutes later after their defense forced a punt that was returned 39-yards for a touchdown by Pearson.

Helmerich said he told Ridge Polk following the game that he had lost sleep

over containing him, but his defense held the senior receiver mostly in check.

“We eliminated his touches for the most part, but we have some things to clean up,” Helmerich said.

After a tightly contested first half, the Gladiators offense found its rhythm in the third quarter and earned separation with Lee’s 86-yard reception, a 41-yard scamper from Nate Hope and a 20-yard touchdown reception from Matt Casey.

Harris was 19-29 passing for 262 yards. Collins had 21 rushes for 116 yards.

With Johns Creek and Centennial earning wins Friday, a pivotal region matchup looms Oct. 19 as the two undefeated, region-leading teams square off. “[Centennial] has a high-powered offense, athletes all over their defense, and right now they’re the best team in the region,” Helmerich said. “But our goal is to get better each week and we’ve done a good job of that to put ourselves in a position over the next few weeks to play for a region championship. And that was our goal at the outset of the year.”
