ey, girl!” David Byers’ booming voice and big smile greet me as soon as I enter the gym at Strikers Tumble and Cheer. A hug soon follows. Byers knows no strangers. “OK, get your ears ready,” he warns. “Because I’m about to crank up the music and I like it loud!” With that, Byers launches into coach mode, transferring his focus and energy to a row of young students – 18 girls and one boy – lined up on tumbling mats, all redcheeked and sweating. And all smiles. The smiles are noteworthy as it is near the end of a grueling two-hour conditioning practice, part of the regular training regimen for Strikers Red, a newly

▼ INTERVIEW, Continued from Page 6 would feel the same, and slowly, a new idea began to form. “I know you’re going to think I’m crazy,” she told her husband, Neil. “But what would you say about opening our own cheer gym – and bringing David Byers with us?” Thus, Strikers Tumble and Cheer was born. Chambers had entrepreneurial confidence, having previously owned her own company, but no new venture is without risk. Her initial challenges were finding the right facility and recruiting new students as quickly as possible. Early help arrived in the form of friend Shelley Margow, owner of Children’s Therapy Works in Alpharetta, who offered the use of her facility’s tumbling mats until a larger space could be obtained. “We couldn’t have made it without Shelley,” said Chambers, “She is an amazing person with such a big heart. She housed us for five months until the new gym was up and running.” Chambers was confident in Byers’ ability to attract new students, but even she was amazed at how quickly the word spread. “We needed to secure 100 students by December of 2013 in order for our business model to work,” she recalled. “We were blown away when we had 100 by October without any advertising at all.” Susan Warren was one of the first mothers to sign up. “David was exactly what our daughter Anna needed during her sixth-grade year, which is a tough one emotionally for many girls,” said Warren. “We’ve worked with coaches at other cheer gyms and there is no one out there like David,” she said. “Other coaches feel the need to yell at their teams, sometimes degrading the girls. David commands respect from his team, but gives it right back. They are not allowed to put down one another. Instead, you see them cheering each other on, clapping and slapping each other on the back. It’s awesome. We are so thankful that Tara and Neil Chambers decided to take a chance and open a gym.” Strikers Tumble and Cheer moved to their current location near the intersection of Alpharetta Highway and McFarland Parkway in July 2013. In addition to offering a variety of tumbling and instructional classes, the gym hosts two competitive co-ed cheer
teams – Strikers Red for fourth- through ninth-graders and Strikers Black for second-, third- and fourth-graders. Though brand new to the cheer scene, Strikers Red exceeded all early expectations, taking fifth place at their first competition in December 2013, and third and fourth place, respectively, during competitions in January and February of this year. Though proud of his team’s success, Byers says that at the end of the day, trophies are not the goal. “Cheer is more than a sport for me. It’s about teaching these kids solid life skills,” he said. “Working together toward a common goal. Believing in yourself. Yes, I’m competitive and I love to win, but not at the risk of burning out my students. Tumbling is 70 percent mental and 30 percent physical. A girl has to trust herself to do these skills. If I can build her up, then she will become self-confident and independent, in life as well as cheer.” This positive approach appealed to Lee Leathers, mother of 9-year-old Bennett, the youngest member of Strikers Red. Leathers was hesitant at first to place her daughter on a highly competitive team, but Byers’ warmth won her over. “David makes a point to come into the gym lobby after practice to speak to every single parent in the room. He knows all of the siblings’ names. He chats with the grandmothers who drive carpool. I have never in my life seen a coach who does that. The girls feel so safe with him – they know he genuinely cares about them,” she said. At every practice, Byers pays attention to each student’s mood, noting who might be having a bad day. “If they can come into my gym for a couple of hours and feel at peace and enjoy their time here, then all of the work is so worth it,” he said. Strikers Red is currently training for a competition to be held at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta on March 29. The team experienced a fall during February’s competition, but they have learned to let it go and move on. “Merritt used to get down on herself if she failed,” said Chambers. “But now she has the confidence to see a mistake as just that – a mistake – and she doesn’t let it weigh her down. David taught her that. As a coach, he knows when a girl needs to be reprimanded and when she just needs a hug.” For more information on Strikers Tumble and Cheer, visit www. strikerscheer.com. ■

So how did he propose? We were with a group of friends on a trip to the British Virgin Islands over New Year’s Eve. One afternoon out on the water, Neil asked me to haul up a rope that was hanging over the side of the boat. When I pulled the rope up out of the ocean, I found a ring tied to the end of it. Then he went down on one knee and our friends all ran up and sprayed us with champagne.
How would you describe your wedding style? We are having our reception at the King Plow Arts Center in Atlanta, which is a very rustic, industrial facility — lots of old brick and iron. I want to take that look and add a gorgeous, romantic element. My sister Caroline says that I pretty much want Restoration Hardware to decorate my wedding.
He left your diamond ring dangling on a rope in the ocean?? I know, right? Guess that's what happens when a group of guys plans something. He tied it on with a LOT of knots, but still!
Your colors? Neutrals. All neutrals. My bridesmaids’ dresses will be grey and there are actually a lot of really pretty grey flowers out there. My florist is trying to convince me to add some soft pinks, but we’ll see. You are very close to your two sisters — Caroline and Heidi. How did you choose your maid of honor? I didn’t. I’m going to have co-maids of honor!
Any reception food plans yet? Still working on it—but we like the idea of a Mason jar station where you can layer foods like shrimp & grits, or maybe a biscuit, then fried chicken, then gravy topped with fried okra or some other veggie.
Heidi is also newly engaged — how are your parents feeling about planning two large weddings within one year? Well, with three daughters all very close in age, I think they knew this might happen one day. They are just trying to enjoy it! My dad, in particular, is beyond excited. He wants to be involved in every aspect of the wedding. He went with me to the bridal shop because we had to make sure that he also said ‘Yes’ to the dress!

How many bridesmaids will you have? Nine. Two sisters and seven friends. We all plan to head to the coast for a bachelorette party — probably to Charleston. We’ll rent a beach house and bring in a big group of friends to celebrate.

Allison Kloster: Yes, we freaked out a bit when we learned that we would be hosting two weddings eight weeks apart! We told them that we planned to close off our cul-de-sac, put up a huge tent and have two weddings in a row on the same day. Surprisingly, neither girl has taken us up on that offer. (Laughs) What I love is how supportive Sam and Heidi are to each other. Their styles are totally different — I can’t even get them to share a veil! — but whatever one picks out, the other gets so excited about. There is no competition for attention at all — even though they are sharing the limelight. My husband, Peter, and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year, so for many reasons, this is a really special time in my life and I hope to enjoy every moment. Have you found lots of ideas on Pinterest? Pinterest is great, but it almost makes things harder — there are so many ideas to choose from! I did use a Pinterest idea for asking my bridesmaids to be in my wedding. I gave each girl a pretty bottle with a cork in it and rolled up a “message in a bottle” inside, complete with a lace tag and ribbon tied around the outside.

here is an age-old adage that “time is fleeting,” but the mentors of Mentor Me North Georgia are in the business of making memories that will last for a lifetime. Mentor Me was established in 2002 as a nonprofit Leadership Forsyth class project and became Mentor Me North Georgia in 2008. Implementing a careful screening process, Mentor Me matches kids, ages 6-17, with a responsible adult who will serve as their mentor and friend. Karen Carroll perches at the helm of this incredible project as the program director of Mentor Me. Part of the matching process for mentors and kids includes coordinating location and interests of the subjects matched. Carroll endeavors to ensure that matched volunteers and kids have a long and healthy pairing through Mentor Me.
“We like to show the kids new things and provide positive guidance. We want to make sure personalities are going to mesh,” Carroll said. Throughout the nonprofit’s years of service in Forsyth County, hundreds of children have been mentored. Carroll said referrals typically come from school counselors and parents, but any child can apply to take part in the Mentor Me program. They simply need to be looking for an affirming influence in their life. Typically, the children served by Mentor Me stem from single-parent homes or homes where they are being raised by non-immediate family members. However, the mission of the nonprofit is to help children reach their potential, which can be accomplished regardless of the child’s home life. Having a mentor increases a child’s self-esteem, promotes curiosity about new things and opens children up to different and exciting experiences. Children left at home alone too much may regress or plateau in their studies and in life. “Sometimes moms are working all the time or have three or four kids and don’t have time to be a role model,” Carroll said. “I have a child I matched who was amazed just to have a sit down, family dinner with their mentor.” Mentor Me helps kids to not only envision a better life for themselves, but teaches them that

anything they dream about can be accomplished with the right attitude. There are important factors that distinguish a mentor from a parent. Parents are expected to be responsible for a child’s basic needs: food, shelter, clothing and discipline. Mentors are not intended to fill this role. Subsequently, a mentor can be a resource of comfort and trust for a child when a parent might not. “Some of our mentors help with academics,” Carroll said. “There are some things kids won’t talk to their parents about, but the mentor is someone they can talk to.” The volunteers of Mentor Me help children find the positive reinforcement they need to make good decisions in life and stay away from drugs, delinquency and teen pregnancy. Every child is different, so it is up to mentors to determine the activities they will partake in with their matched child. Activities can range from an afternoon of baking cookies to taking the child on vacation. “I started mentoring in 2011,” Carroll said. “You can incorporate your family in the process.” In reference to the child she currently mentors, Carroll said, “My kids always ask when we are going to pick up Taylor.” Volunteers like Carroll all have different reasons and inspiration that have pushed them to work with Mentor Me. “My parents were awesome,” Carroll said. “I always had someone I could count on. I wanted to be that for someone. I think that’s why most people mentor, for that reason.” It is all about making the child feel like they are listened to, like they are special, and Carroll does just that. “Mentor time is their time,” she said. It takes a special person to be a mentor. You have to believe in the power

Entertaining advice from Lee Chadwick of the Metropolitan Club By KATIE VANBRACKLE

or Lee Chadwick, being a gracious hostess is a way of life. As president and owner of the Metropolitan Club, a premiere events facility in Alpharetta, Chadwick oversees around 200 events every year – from weddings and formal soirées to nonprofit fundraisers and corporate trainings. Already renowned for exceptional food and service in a stylish setting, the Metropolitan Club will soon receive a
design makeover, with plans for a new front patio and sleek new furnishings throughout. Entertaining and feeding so many varied groups on such a grand scale requires a serious arsenal of culinary skills, something Chadwick says is in her blood as a fifth generation chef. As a young woman, Chadwick was determined to avoid the restaurant business initially. She chose instead to study architecture and design. However, destiny steered her back into the kitchen in Chicago, where she worked as a catering director for the University of Illinois Medical Center. Here, she learned to apply design skills to the culinary arts. The medical center frequently hosted teams of professionals and students from all over the world, and feeding them posed unique challenges. “These people were not cheeseburger eaters,” she recalled. “Each group had

It required a new way of thinking to learn which foods, flavors and textures were more universally acceptable.” Chadwick consulted with international chefs in the Chicago area to enhance her knowledge of global cuisine, and then began to experiment. The possibilities were endless – such as wrapping French roasted duck inside an Asian eggroll, served with a white grape dipping sauce. It was fusion food before fusion food was cool. As a newlywed, Chadwick wanted to share her cooking skills with friends, but dinner parties were a much more formal affair back then. “This was a time when brides still registered for things like fingerbowls,” she said. “Hosting a dinner party meant inviting six people to your home, where you would attempt to cook five complicated, new recipes flawlessly, then wind up doing dishes until the following week. Talk about stress! It was absurd.” She chuckles at the memory of one of those early dinner parties. “I decided to host a Moroccan feast – removing the legs from my dining room table and seating my guests on cushions on the floor. About halfway through my six-course meal, I rose to clear plates and discovered that my foot had gone to sleep. I stumbled, rolled my ankle and wound up breaking my foot in three places. But, true to the rules of the era, I said nothing and

I just drank a lot more wine!” Years later, when her own daughter became a new bride, Chadwick was determined that Jordan would learn to entertain guests without all the fuss. Inspired to share her years of hard-earned wisdom with others as well, Chadwick decided to write a book about “how to stylishly entertain without killing yourself.” “Some Assembly Required: Stylish entertaining and successful meals without stress!” was published in 2007. Chadwick feels that in today’s cyberworld, it’s more important than ever for people to gather together, face-to-face, for a meal and conversation. The key, she says, is not to make the preparations so difficult that you won’t do it. We need to invite our friends into our homes, she
says, but in a way that is relaxed and easy and satisfying to all. When entertaining friends with whom she wants to “have a cerebral conversation, not just cocktail chatter,” Chadwick gathers her guests around a simple table to nibble on perhaps a fresh salad with lemon, olives, tomatoes and warm bread. Then more food is added to the table in stages, maybe pre-marinated shrimp or something hot off the grill. Eating one thing at a time at a relaxed pace, she says, allows the hostess to remain at the table, enjoying her guests, instead of slaving over the stove. At the Metropolitan Club, buffet tables contain elaborate floral
centerpieces, but at home, Chadwick prefers to let the food take center stage. “I always have fresh flowers in my home, but almost never on the table. If the food is beautifully prepared, then it will be decoration enough. At home, I use white china, linen napkins with pretty napkin rings and candles. Lighting is a huge part of the food experience.” Her favorite go-to appetizer is Black Pepper Brie, a dish that is quick and easy to prepare, but presents well and packs great flavor. “The rind on a round of brie is rubbery and unappealing, but when you pat some pepper on it and sauté it in a little butter, the rind becomes nicely browned, crisp and flavorful – just delicious,” she said. “I love to serve it with sweet grape tomatoes, fresh basil leaves and warm French bread.” For another secretly simple appetizer with fabulous flavor, toss a whole orange into a blender – skin and all – maybe adding a little water or a cup of Chardonnay. Toss the blended mixture over boiled, cleaned shrimp and marinate overnight, or for at least two hours. “The citrus kills any bacteria on the shrimp, so there is no offensive seafood smell,” Chadwick said. “It still tastes like shrimp, but with a little sweetness. Put the shrimp on a platter with fresh parsley and serve. From “Some Assembly Required” by Lee Chadwick Ingredients • 1 (8-ounce) round of brie • 2 teaspoons coarsely ground pepper • 2 teaspoons butter Instructions Sprinkle water over brie, then sprinkle the pepper over the top. Heat butter in a
skillet over medium heat until melted. Add brie and cook until bubbly; do not burn. Turn to cook the other side, or place brown side up on a plate. Serve with apple slices, crackers or grape tomatoes and French bread. If you have trouble getting the pepper to stay on, simple sprinkle it in the pan, then add the brie. Serves 4 to 6.

Author’s note: In the spirit of culinary adventure, I decided to test this recipe in my own kitchen. Well, okay, I sweet-talked my husband, the true chef in our family, into making it for me. He chose to top one brie round with a cranberry/pomegranate chutney and fresh rosemary and the other with jalapeno jelly and fresh mint, and he reports that the recipe is every bit as easy as Lee Chadwick promises. I assure you, the delicious results were devoured as soon as the last photo was taken.

Roswell wedding professionals share tips and trends for 2014 By KATIE VanBRACKLE

No doubt about it, Roswell is a wedding town. Countless young brides each year flock to the historic city, where rose-scented gardens and white columned antebellum homes offer a classic, fairytale setting for the big event. But not far from the historic Town Square, another Roswell venue is shaking things up a bit. The Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC), nestled in a wooded setting along the banks of the Chattahoochee River,
offers a unique alternative for brides seeking rustic elegance and spacious natural vistas. A large waterfront pavilion provides a picturesque spot for taking the proverbial plunge. “Today’s bride wants to express her individuality while making a statement about what she values,” said CNC’s Lynn McIntyre. “Green lifestyles call for a new way of celebrating, and brides of all ages are inspired by our beautiful, relaxed outdoor setting.” In the three years CNC has been hosting weddings, they have seen it all – a bride arriving by lantern-lit canoe, a cow in attendance and guests kicking up their heels for barbecue and dancing

under the stars. “We’re quite popular with older brides, remarriages and young brides with a unique sense of style,” said McIntyre. “In today’s wedding world, the décor is much more natural and ‘funky fun’ is perfectly acceptable.”
The Dress
Lauren Williams of Treasures Formals and Bridal in Roswell says subdued shades set the stage for 2014 trends in bridesmaid dresses. Soft fabrics reign supreme with only a hint of hue, such as blush, champagne, grey and Tiffany blue. Pairing similar versions of the same dress, such as a strapless style with a complimenting one-shoulder style gives variety while maintaining a cohesive feel.
In bridal trends, vintage inspiration leads to lace with subtle sparkle. Straps and cap sleeves have made a comeback, but don’t count out strapless as many designers still favor this timeless neckline. Romance is the key theme in styles with soft layering of fabrics — whether tulle, organza or lace. Textures are light to create movement and allure.
The Flowers
Colleen Nelson of Murson Designs says the trend in florals this year is “modern vintage glam.” “Last year’s look was very rustic and simple, and we are still seeing some of that, but this year we are glamming up the farm look a bit,” she said. “We’re creating bouquets with a classic, elegant look and a feathery texture. Peonies are always very popular for bridal bouquets and I expect to see a lot of garden roses in 2014. They are so fragrant and have a much more ‘feathery’ look to them than standard roses. With the limited availability of peonies, garden roses are a beautiful option. “My advice to brides is this – there are no rules to your décor, only suggestions. We’re all inspired by the trends that we see published, but in the end, pick a few of the things that you see and like. Then, pick a designer that can pull it all together to create your vision. And make sure that the designer has a smile on their face when you are talking to them. It’s a sign that they love what they do.”
The Food
Family-style dining at wedding receptions is becoming more popular, according to Georgina Mathews of Talk of the Town Catering. “We love it,” she said. “Platters are brought to individual tables, giving guests the choices of a buffet without having to get up and leave their conversations.” Specialty bars of all sorts remain a fun trend. Mathews suggests a s’mores bar for fall weddings, with a little fire station, skewers, marshmallows and creative toppings.

The Entertainment
You’ve probably seen viral YouTube videos of a traditional father/daughter or mother/son wedding dance which begins sedately, but then suddenly morphs into a full tilt, choreographed groove session — much to the hilarity of everyone present. Ted Crowder of Atlanta Bands and DJ’s says the key to planning a surprise dance is to work with your entertainer in advance. “I can email a custom mixed song to you, allowing ample time for choreography and rehearsals,” he said. Crowder also suggests creating a full itinerary for your emcee, so they can be familiar with the timing of your grand entrance, the cake cutting or your run through the bubbles — allowing smooth transitions throughout the evening.
The Invitations
Suzanne Feeney says 60 percent of the invitation orders made at The Chandlery in Roswell are still very traditional, though brides can choose from a wide array of designs – everything from burlap to palm trees. Chiffon ribbons are on their way out, with small, thin satin ribbons taking their place. “Save the date” cards are still very popular, especially for weddings with out of town guests. A new trend is all-inone “pocket” invitations, especially for destination weddings. Feeney says having a good wedding website is a big help for hotel and registry information. “Just remember to be discreet about the photos you are posting on your wedding website,” she advises. “You might want to think twice about those pics from the bachelorette party — your grandmother will be seeing them.”

DerriereRepair Easy exercises to help tone the tush

his winter has been brutal. With the cold and of course the snow and ice, working out has been a challenge. I know I’ve been sitting on my derriere more than normal and I suspect many of you have, too. Now that the weather is improving and spring break is around the corner, it’s time to get up and move. And about that derriere? Maybe it’s time for some repair work. Here are five exercises to help tone the tush and improve the view from behind.
Squats The dreaded squat – so few like it but oh, it does a butt good. It also does the hips, thighs and calves good too. The lower you go, the better the exercise. Push some dumbbells up above your shoulders for added benefit. Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart. Lower your body as far as you can by pushing your hips back and bending your knees. Pause, then slowly push yourself back to starting position. When squatting,
Lunge leg lifts The lunge is an excellent compound exercise too, so not only will you tighten the tush, you’ll tone up the surrounding muscles, too. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, back straight, shoulders back. Step forward with one leg into a wide stance and lower your hips until both knees are bent at about a 90 degree angle. Don’t extend your front knee over your ankle and keep your back knee just above the ground. Push your heels into the ground and push back up into the starting position. Repeat on the other leg. For an added benefit, add a leg lift on the back end of the exercise.
Hip extensions Consider these a little resting exercise, but only for the first three or four repetitions because once that burn kicks in, yowza! You’ll feel it! Start on your hands and knees with your shoulders in line with

your hand and hips just over the knees. Tighten your core and keep it tight. Lift one leg until your thigh is parallel to the floor. Keep your foot flat, with the bottom of the shoe facing the ceiling. Lower the knee until it’s hovering just above the floor. Repeat on the other leg. This is a great exercise for fixing the fanny. It’s not a compound exercise, but after 10 or 12 of them, you won’t care.
Step ups
cardio exercise. Thirty minutes, three to five times a week on the elliptical, stepper or even 10 minutes (if you can manage) on the Jacob’s Ladder and you’ll see a difference in time for shorts season. One final note – we are what we eat, and that includes our backsides. ■
Remember that step class you used to take? Grab that step, add a few levels and start stepping. Don’t pass a 90-degree angle with your step or box and keep your feet flat when stepping and press with the heel. You’ll have a derriere to die for in no time.

scrub; extra attention to feet, ankles, elbows, knees and hands. Use a salt scrub to prevent interaction with sugar-derived active ingredients in most self tanners. Try C Booth’s All Over Body Sea Salt Body Scrub ($9). You can also make your own salt scrub by mixing store-bought sea salt (or even plain table salt for gentler exfoliation) with baby oil or your favorite body oil – I love Beach Body Oil by Bobbi Brown ($31). Twice as much salt as oil is the best ratio ► Follow by washing body with a clear, gel cleanser like Neutrogena Rainbath Shower and Bath Gel ($24). Dry thoroughly and apply light body moisture lotion like Neutrogena Body Lotion ($6) to rough spots, hairline and brows before self-tanner. ► Start at top of body and work down to feet; apply sparingly to rough spots. Wearing thin rubber gloves will give more even application and minimize staining of hands. About 1.5 ounces should cover an average adult. Use a self-tanner made for faces only on face and neck. A great
line for total body self-tanning is Xen Tan ($8-40). ► Allow to “set” for 10 minutes, then apply a light layer of the same body lotion over self-tanner, blending into skin until thoroughly absorbed. ► Remove gloves and apply tanner to backs of hands and fingers (not to nail area), let it set and then apply body lotion over hands as well. ► Do not dress or move around too much for 20 minutes. Then wear light fabric or loose fitting gown for additional 20 minutes while drying hair and so on. Most products currently on the market will dry and begin to develop color by this time. To remove any streaks or darker spots, use nail polish remover on cotton pads and apply directly to area, carefully blending into surrounding area. ► For more intense color, reapply selftanner only within three hours of initial application. Do not shower or bathe for at least six hours after last layer of product. (Do not reapply body lotion after second layer of tanner.) To maintain color, reapply self-tanner every few days or as color fades. ■

he North Fulton Alliance of Young Professionals (NFAYP) is a networking group for the up-andcoming in the six cities of North Fulton. The group was started in August of 2012 with my wife and five other board members. Since that time, all of the original board members have either married or become engaged. Coincidence? Maybe. But I’d like to think that NFAYP had a little something to do with it! Here are their engagement stories:
Kristin Rome, Project Manager, North Fulton CID Brett Winzeler, Financial Analyst, Georgia Pacific Just before Thanksgiving 2013, Brett and Kristin were visiting Brett’s family in Cape Canaveral, Fla. Brett took Kristin to a secluded park on the beach where a photographer was hiding to capture the moment. After she said yes, Kristin’s family, who had been vacationing in Orlando, surprised her along with Brett’s parents, and the entire party enjoyed a wonderful Italian dinner. They will be married in Norcross on Oct. 17.
Kellie Jureka, Graphic Designer Jonathan Copsey, Editor, Alpharetta/Roswell Revue & News Jonathan took Kellie to a romantic dinner at Milton’s Cuisine in Crabapple. Seated in the back corner room next to a beautiful fire, they teased one another over dinner, saying they’d give the relationship another year. A few minutes later, the server came out with a covered dessert dish from the cook. Jonathan removed the lid to reveal a jewelry box and got down on one knee. Without even waiting for the question, Kellie excitedly said, “yes!” The couple will be married at Roswell’s Barrington Hall in October of this year.

imeless doesn’t mean bland or boring. You can achieve a timeless classic look while still expressing your personality and bringing in those favorite trends. Start with clean and classic lines and traditional furniture. Choosing a few pieces with more modern elements will keep the room fresh and fun. Mirrored designs bring elegance and sophistication while adding depth to any room. You can also bring in a pop of color in a chair or ottoman, or an intricate modern piece to add a dramatic flair. Neutral color palates are a favorite and work wonderfully in any room. Bring in a pop of color with accessories or a fun statement piece you love. You can also add personality to a neutral room with animal prints, skins or embossed fabrics. Mixed metals are very popular. Dress up a room by bringing in a mixture of silver and gold which add warmth and elegance. A little symmetry can go a long way in room design. Two lamps for instance bring ambiance and help to balance the look. Side tables, chairs and ottomans are also good ways achieve balance in a room but they don’t necessarily have to match. don’t have to tell you that there aren’t enough hours in the day, especially the weekdays. At least for me. Sometimes Saturdays are almost as busy – doing all the things I couldn’t squeeze in before or after work. But generally, I can find an hour or so on Saturday to do something fun or important, even something I might have postponed on purpose. A few weeks ago, I found an extra hour on a Saturday morning – after rolling out of bed at a leisurely 7 a.m. and before my training session at 9:30 – for something that fit two out of three. It wasn’t fun, but I was postponing it and it was very important. I scheduled and kept my annual screening mammogram at the Roswell Imaging Center on the North Fulton Hospital campus. My fiancé and I are getting married soon and we each have our own dog who is used to being our “one and only” companion. How can we introduce our dogs to each other in a way that ensures a happy transition?
A
In most instances, introducing dogs to each other is a seamless process. However, depending on each dogs’ behavioral history, there could be some unexpected challenges. Understanding basic dog behavior will greatly help you when making this introduction. One of the most important things to remember is that dogs tend to be pack animals, and pack animals follow a hierarchy, which includes submissive dogs as well as dominant dogs. As dogs interact with each other, they learn how to behave and form more stable relationships with each other. This is no different from when you bring a dog into your home. The way you train your dog solidifies your position as the dominant figure in the relationship. Dogs that are socialized as puppies and are well trained by their owners tend to be better adjusted and
usually more likely to be accepting of other dogs without fear or aggression. Aside from fear or aggression, dogs may also be territorial, so finding a neutral ground in the introduction process can be very helpful. This avoids the possibility of either dog becoming excited over defending a particular territory such as their home. If the initial introduction is successful and both dogs are accepting of each other, having them share positive activities together, such as taking walks and playing, can further strengthen the bond between them. In addition to introducing dogs on a neutral ground, it is important to do so with them on a leash, giving you better control over the dogs and allowing you to pull them apart if needed. Allowing them to sniff each other out is great as long as both dogs are relaxed and interested without being overly excited. They learn about their world mostly through their sense of smell vs. humans with our sense of sight. Pull them away from each other as necessary. It is very important to keep in mind that knowing your dog’s behavioral tendencies will help avoid possible stressful situations. If your dog tends to be very possessive with his/her food, avoid feeding dogs close to each other. Consider feeding dogs in different rooms or areas of the house. In time, many dogs learn to eat in close proximity to each other without getting too protective of their food. Last but not least, in situations where dogs are being a greater challenge than expected, you can consider an experienced dog trainer. ■

She was rescued by Angels Among Us Pet Rescue and has been in a foster home for several months while she awaits her new family.
