Lung Cancer in Georgia
• Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women in Georgia. • The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 6,410 Georgia residents will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year, and approximately 4,670 Georgia residents will lose their lives to the disease this year. • Nationwide, lung cancer takes the lives of almost twice as many American women as breast cancer annually and three times as many men as prostate cancer. A fine-feathered trend Feather hair extensions are the current beauty rage BY CANDY WAYLOCK

Cruelty-free options available
When Fashion meets Fishing
The vast majority of roosters used for feather extensions give up their life for their feathers. Roosters are raised until their feathers reach market length, then euthanized. But there are options for people looking for cruelty-free feathers. Synthetic feathers are available, and a number of outlets now offer naturally collected feathers. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan By Lisa See In 19th century China, when wives and daughters were foot-bound and lived in almost total seclusion, a secret code of communication was created: nu shu (“women’s writing”). Letters were painted on fans, and messages were embroidered on handkerchiefs to allow them to share hopes, dreams and accomplishments. Snow Flower and Lily, friends from childhood, reflect upon their arranged marriages, loneliness and the joys and tragedies of motherhood through their secret fan until a misunderstanding threatens to destroy their bond.

A bright pink banner on Dekin’s bike lists the name of her mother and aunt, among others, who bravely fought the disease. In addition to helping with the walk, the funloving members of the moto crew raise funds by selling a calendar featuring rather revealing photos of the riders and their bikes. “It’s tastefully done,” Dyson (Miss February) explained with a wink. “I sold one to my mother.” Dyson is a long-time motorcycle enthusiast who bought her first street bike (the aforementioned Fat Boy) in 2001. She has traveled across Australia, Hawaii and Europe via motorcycle, most recently riding from Rome to Sarajevo. “You don’t see as many big bikes in Europe,” she said. “Mostly just scooters. I would turn left at a stop sign and just fall over!” Dekin said she really learned to ride with Dyson when the two took a lady biker road trip to a Harley Davidson H.O.G. An easy, make-ahead “dinner” recipe that’s packed with nutrition. Serves Makes six light meal servings Ingredients • 1 cup of your favorite veggies, chopped – red/green pepper, asparagus, onion, etc. • ½ cup chopped ham – optional • 2 oz. grated Parmesan cheese • 10 eggs beaten with 2T water • 1T butter or olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste Preparation • Pre-heat oven to Broil setting • In a 12-inch ovenproof, non-stick pan, melt butter or heat olive oil. • Add chopped vegetables and ham to the pan. Sauté five minutes on medium heat or until soft and beginning to brown. • Whisk together eggs, water, salt, pepper and cheese in separate
bowl. Add egg mixture to the pan and swirl to incorporate with veggies and ham. • Cook for approximately five minutes on medium/medium high heat, pushing edges toward center of pan to distribute uncooked egg. Eggs will be ready to broil when the bottom is set and the top is begging to set. • Place sauté pan in oven, set to broil and cook for three minutes or until eggs are beginning to puff and are cooked through. • Remove from oven and allow to cool before slicing into six triangles. Store in microwavesafe containers and reheat at 50 percent power at one-minute increments until cooked through. • Serve with whole grain rolls or toast.

◄ New lamps – If you’ve had the same lamps since you’ve been married, it’s probably time for a change. We often don’t notice our lamps, but it’s amazing the difference you’ll see by updating lamps. You don’t necessarily have to toss the old lamps—just move them into a less-used area, such as a guest bedroom or terrace level.
► Pillows
–
The
ultimate
(and
inexpensive) quick fix to add design elements to any room. The sky’s the limit with patterns, sizes and styles. Add a few pillows on your sofa, chairs or beds to really change the look of the room.
◄ Mirrors – Sometimes all it takes is a wall mirror to highlight the view of your room. It becomes an everchanging piece of art, if placed in the right location to reflect the outdoors throughout the day. The style and size of the mirror is important when you consider where to place it in your home.
► Artwork – While original artwork is a wonderful investment, there are many outlets for inexpensive prints and oils that, if framed properly, will have the same design impact. Save on the print, and perhaps splurge on a decorative frame that sets off the art and beautifully fills an otherwise empty wall.
◄ Wallpaper/paint – Change the entire look of the room with a new coat of paint or strategically placed wallpaper. While painting may be a do-it-yourself weekend project, consider professional assistance to hang wallpaper. Open your mind to the many design possibilities today’s wallpaper has to offer.
