was a neighbor’s horse, Bee-Bop, who occasionally wandered over to the home Flanagan shared with her husband in Florida. She discovered that BeeBop was cruelly mistreated by his owners. Handling the matter carefully, Flanagan offered to buy BeeBop, saying she had a fondness for the Paso Fino breed. The neighbors agreed to the sale, BeeBop was moved to his new home and Flanagan discovered her true calling. By 1996, Flanagan’s family owned eight horses and moved to a spacious farm in Cumming where Flanagan envisioned running a boarding business. However, destiny kept calling. Perhaps it was a friend with cancer who could no longer care for her horse. Or a volunteer from an animal control center with a story of an abused or neglected equine. Flanagan always agreed to house the animal until a new, safer home could be found. “I can never say no, and I can never rescue just one,” Flanagan admitted. “They haunt you. They look at you. Horses are honorable creatures. How could you walk away?” Flanagan founded Save the Horses in 1998 and today, her barns and pastures are full, but the Cheryl Flanagan with 28-year-old Lobo who was rescued from abuse in Gwinnett County. Weight Loss Surgery FAQs What is your Body Mass Index (BMI)? BMI is calculated by using a formula that considers the ratio of height and weight. Adults over 20 should have a BMI between 18.5 at 25; anything over 30 is considered obese; anything over 40 is considered morbidly obese, placing you at a very high health risk. To calculate your BMI, visit www. atlantabariatriccenter.com. Are you a candidate for bariatric surgery? According to the National Institutes of Health, the basic standards for qualifying for weight loss surgery are: • For men at least 100 pounds overweight and women at least 80 pounds overweight, with a BMI of 40 or more. • The presence of health problems related to obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or other conditions. • An ability to participate in treatment and longterm follow-up. • An understanding of the operation and the lifestyle changes you will need to make. What are the options for bariatric surgery? ► Gastric Bypass Roux-en-Y The surgeon divides the stomach in two parts; the large portion of the stomach is closed off with staples to create a smaller pouch. The smaller stomach, your new pouch, restricts the amount of food you can eat at one time. The small intestine is cut below the duodenum and reattached to the new stomach pouch, leaving a shortened path for food to travel through so less food is absorbed. ► Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding An adjustable gastric band is placed around the top part of the stomach dividing it into two parts: a small upper pouch and a lower stomach. The size of the band is adjusted using a port placed under your skin. Adjusting the band changes how much you can eat and how quickly food leaves the new pouch so patients feel full sooner and longer. ► Gastric sleeve procedure The sleeve limits food intake by reducing the size of the stomach. A stapling device is used to divide the stomach vertically, leaving behind a thin vertical sleeve of stomach. The excised portion of the stomach is removed. *Talk to your doctor about specific risks associated with each of these procedures and which one might be right for you. How do you prepare for bariatric surgery? Like all major surgeries, the best preparation is to understand the risks and potential benefits, and to closely follow your doctor’s orders. To mentally prepare yourself: • Understand the surgical process and what to expect afterward. • Talk to people who have had weight loss surgery. • Write a letter to yourself and your surgeon explaining your reasons for having the surgery and outlining your plans to maintain your weight loss after surgery. • Start a journal about your experience. Record how you feel now, the obstacles you encounter, the things you hope to be able to do after surgery. • Get support from friends and family. It helps to know you have people behind you. What is life like after bariatric surgery? The modifications made to the gastrointestinal tract will require permanent changes in eating habits that must be followed for the rest of one’s life to keep the weight from returning. According to statistics, about 80 percent of patients have long-term success following bariatric surgery. It is important to note that every surgeon does not perform the exact same weight loss surgery procedure and that the dietary guidelines will be different for each surgeon and each type of procedure. What is most important is that patients adhere strictly to their surgeon’s recommended guidelines.

Weight loss surgery gives new life to Johns Creek woman Relationship with food now takes a back seat to healthier lifestyle BY CANDY WAYLOCK

waylock5@aol.com Unlike many women with weight issues, Savela Pappas’ battle with the scale didn’t begin in childhood or adolescence. An active athlete and sports enthusiast in her younger years, Pappas began fighting – and losing – the weight war after she became a mother. “The hormone changes became a challenge as I struggled to keep weight off,” said Pappas, 54, who lives in Johns Creek, and has a 26-yearold daughter. “I slowly gained five pounds per year, [and] over a period of 20 years, I became

obese.” Not only was she dangerously overweight, topping the scales at over 250 pounds on a 5-foot, 4-inch frame, but Pappas developed hypertension and diabetes which required daily medication to keep under control. Tired of the constant health struggles, and weary of diet fads, Pappas looked for options to losing weight. She attended an informational seminar on bariatric (weight loss) surgery at Emory Johns Creek, but initially decided she wasn’t ready for a surgical answer. “Although the physicians did a great job presenting, I was not prepared to do the surgery just yet.

Perhaps I

experienced fear of the unknown,” said Pappas, a real estate agent and technology trainer. But the weight continued to creep up, and the health problems continued. A few years later, Pappas reconsidered a surgical option after a friend successfully went through the procedure. She spent six months working with a dietician and attending support groups at Emory Johns Creek Hospital in preparation for the surgery. “At the support groups, I had the opportunity to listen to individuals who had the surgery done, the challenges after surgery, etc. It was very informational ► Savela Pappas at age 17.

in my preparation for the surgery,” said Pappas. “I realized the success of the surgery depended on the patient’s willingness to change their eating habits.” Weight loss surgery has been around for decades, but has grown exponentially in the past decade in the United States as the rate of obesity continues to climb. According to government statistics, 97 million people in the U.S. – one third of the adult population – are overweight or obese. Of those, five to 10 million are morbidly obese, defined as being 100 pounds or more over ideal weight. In July 2010, Pappas underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at Emory Johns

Creek

Hospital,

performed

by Dr. Christopher Hart. This form of bariatric surgery is the most common procedure performed for weight loss, encompassing about 80 percent of all procedures. [see sidebar] The weight loss for Pappas was quick and dramatic. Over the next 18 months, Pappas saw her weight plummet from 252 pounds to 159, her dress size shrink seven sizes and even her shoe size go down.

Bariatric: Weight loss surgery gives woman new life Continued from Page 12 But as she approaches the two-year mark, Pappas fully understands the need to remain committed to her new lifestyle. Prior to surgery, she knew long-term success was only achieved when the patient is a collaborative part of the process. Although Pappas is thrilled by the falling numbers on the scale, she maintains her desire to lose weight was never about the numbers, but her overall health. 'She'ro: Save the Horses founder Cheryl Flanagan rescues equines Continued from Page 6 that prevents him from sweating and releasing body heat, thereby ending his racing career. Many horses in his situation would be sold for slaughter. Thanks to Save the Horses, Quinn received special care and a chance for life after the track. Some horses arrive at Save the Horses close to starvation or with serious injuries. Caring for an animal that has been abused by humans is not an easy task and requires infinite patience. Flanagan is grateful for the 20 or so devoted volunteers who come to the farm regularly to help wounded animals heal physically and mentally. Volunteer Roger Morton drives 40 miles from Braselton once a week to spend time with horses like Trudy, an old, mostly blind, white Appaloosa mare whose story captured his heart. Earl is a mule colt who came to Save the Horses with his mother, Esther. Mules are, of course, half horse and half donkey. While his mother is a thoroughbred, Earl seems to instinctively know his paternal heritage and enjoys running and playing with Carlos and Santana, two rescued donkeys who live on Save the Horses farm. Earl is about 6 months old and is doing well with his ground manners. He walks on lead and enjoys being groomed. Earl is ready to be weaned and moved to a loving home of his own! For more information on Earl and the many other mules, donkeys and horses available for adoption through Save the Horses, go to savethehorses.org and select “Available Horses. You may also call Save the Horses at 770-886-5419. If you are unable to offer a permanent home to Earl, you may also choose to foster him in a temporary home or sponsor him through a donation.

‘No excuses’ fitness keeps mom of thre Even ‘surprise’ baby at age 40 doesn’t derail healthy living BY CANDY WAYLOCK

waylock5@aol.com Kim Wilson welcomes a guest into her home, not at all apologetic about the general state of chaos that waits inside. “My focus is on how I eat and staying fit…the rest is less important,” she said, as she scoops up her infant son and heads out the door. Outside, the property stretches on for several acres,

academy and her own fitness center. In between, evidence of the kick-butt workout she puts her clients through are scattered throughout like a football training camp. Wilson has led an interesting life. The daughter of longtime television meteorologist, Ken Cook, she grew up eating essentially off the land from the bounty of the family garden. “Everyone who watches my dad knows he has gardens. He was farm-to-table way before it became trendy,” laughed Wilson, a native Atlantan through and through who attended St. Pius High School before heading off to Clemson University. “Growing up, we always had huge vegetable and fruit gardens, and to this day my parents still can all their food and make their own preserves,” said Wilson, who now lives in Alpharetta with her husband, Jeffrey, and three children. She credits her upbringing with her own lifelong healthy eating habits, adding the fitness component in her teens after a friend suggested going to the gym to work out. “My sophomore year in high school, I got hooked on fitness, and [my first day in the gym is when] my ‘addiction/obsession/passion’ for fitness was born,” said Wilson. Back then, Wilson didn’t see fitness as a career choice, but more of a lifestyle preference. “I majored in political science [at Clemson] and wanted to be a judge,” she recalled of her

NORTHSIDE WOMAN Northside Woman readers flocked to the grand opening of the Drake Closet resale boutique in Roswell on Dec. 8. The charming boutique located at 825 Mimosa Blvd. was decked out in holiday finery and packed with savvy bargain hunters. Shoppers enjoyed live music, wine and appetizers as they perused racks of stylish clothing, shoes and accessories. Store manager Kimberly Jackson was thrilled with the large turnout for the event which raised almost $2,000. All proceeds from Drake Closet sales go directly to support the Drake House in Roswell which offers short-term crisis housing and support to homeless mothers and their children in the North Fulton area. Agri is passionate about wine and organizes a wine club that offers special events and discounts to members throughout the year. Dal Cuore’s own wine, a Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon, is named Joshua after Agri’s son. Not to be left out, his daughter Lexie lends her name to a unique wine jelly also sold in the market. The fragrant jelly is created by Miller using the Joshua wine. Miller also tends a small herb garden located in front of the market, which is used as a teaching garden for customers and their children. Agri is proud of the fact that the prices in both the restaurant and the market are very reasonable. “We serve some of the best Italian food in town and you’ll recognize the quality after your first bite,” said Agri. “But we are also very affordable. It’s all about community and family here. We want people
