SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Around 900 students from Metro Atlanta public and private schools packed the Byers Theatre at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center Oct. 18 for a matinee of “Fiddler on the Roof.”

High school students from Barrow, Cobb, Gwinnett, Forsyth and Fulton counties took buses to see the City Springs Theatre Company’s full-scale Broadway musical at a 10 a.m. performance.

About 3,500 students from across Metro Atlanta attended four matinees of “Fiddler on the Roof” spread out over the final two weeks of the production’s run.

“Fiddler on the Roof” launched the sixth season of productions at City Springs on Oct. 6.

The musical production concluded Oct. 22.

The company ensures students get the full production at their matinees. That includes an orchestra, every act of the play and memorable performances from thespians.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The City Council announced appointments to the Sandy Springs Development Authority and Board of Ethics Oct. 17, as well as several new items related to utility relocation and local businesses.

“We’re going into appointment season, and this is the first of several that we’ll deal with between now and the first of the year,” Mayor Rusty Paul said.

While the mayor appoints members to the Development Authority, he said he only appoints an individual to two terms.

Toshia Battle and Sunny Park were appointed to a second four-year term on the Development Authority after the City Council unanimously approved the mayor’s nomination without discussion.

Their second term will end Oct. 8, 2027.

Park is a prominent business leader in Georgia who has served countless organizations throughout his career, including the Georgia Port Authority, SK Innovation and the Youth Challenge Academy Foundation.

Metro area police step up security for places of worship Israel-Hamas war raises threat levels

By AMBER PERRY amber@appenmedia METRO ATLANTA — Area police departments are beefing up security for places of worship in the wake of the Israel war against Hamas.

Hamas, the militant group that launched a surprise attack on Israeli border towns, killed an estimated 1,400 Israelis Oct. 7, and Israel formally declared war soon after.

Since then, the health ministry in Gaza reported Oct. 19 that nearly 3,800 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 12,500 have been wounded in Israeli airstrikes.

More than 1 million Palestinians have also been displaced.

Devastation in Gaza, where 99 percent of the population is Muslim, continues. The death toll of Palestinians rises in the West Bank as well, though it is not controlled by Hamas.

The FBI has seen an increase in reports of threats against Jewish, Muslim and Arab communities and institutions, according to an Oct. 18 press release. In recent news out of Joliet, Illinois, a 6-yearold Palestinian-American boy was stabbed to death by a neighbor because he was Muslim.

North Atlanta is not far removed from hate-filled acts. In August, Appen Media reported that antisemitic flyers were spread around Roswell and Milton mere months after similar leaflets were distributed in

While local police departments have logged no rise in criminal activity associated with the war overseas, they are ramping up in preparation.

Appen Media contacted more than half a dozen law enforcement agencies, and all said they were stepping up efforts to protect places of worship, though mosques were mentioned as an afterthought in some cases.

Backing Israel The Israel-Hamas war has resulted in an outpouring of support for the Israeli government, not just its people. According to a nationwide CNN poll, the majority of Americans surveyed say Israel’s response is justified.

At the state level, Gov. Brian Kemp recently purchased $10 million in bonds from Israel to support its war efforts — what some in the United States have characterized as a genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people, who have fought for freedom against Israeli occupation since they had been forced out by Zionist militias in 1948.

Kemp said he would have purchased more than $10 million in bonds, but that it was all the market had available.

“It’s just a tragic situation. A tragic, inhuman loss of Israeli lives, and American

lives, and other people,” Kemp said. “Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with the people of Israel during this really trying time.”

Across north Metro Atlanta, support for Palestinian-Americans and the Muslim community has also largely fallen to the wayside in terms of proclamations, comments from the dais and in other official capacities.

But, local police departments have said they are stepping up patrols in places of worship to include both synagogues and mosques, though several did not exclusively name mosques in their initial response.

When Appen Media contacted seven police agencies in north Metro Atlanta cities with questions about whether there have been any extra safety precautions because of the war, about half responded with comments exclusively directed at the safety of their jurisdictions’ Jewish communities.

“The Sandy Springs Police Department is working with our Jewish partners throughout the city to make sure they feel safe and that we are providing the best level of service available,” Sandy Springs PIO Sgt. Matthew McGinnis wrote in an email, for example.

In a follow-up email, McGinnis said, “We work with all faiths in times like these to ensure the safety of everyone, including the city’s Islamic population.”

More poll workers, staff time, legal fees raise Milton election costs

By AMBER PERRY amber@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Prompted by cost savings when it opted to run its own municipal election this year, the City of Milton will have spent more than it would have paid Fulton County to run the show.

An Appen Media study conducted through open records and interviews shows the city will have spent at least $60,000 more.

Soon after the City Council adopted Milton’s fiscal year 2024 budget in September allocating $102,280 for the municipal election, a dozen more poll workers were hired.

City staff discovered during a trial run that they needed more tabulators to count the ballots at the end of Election Day. Paid at $17 an hour in addition to $40 for training, the 12 new hires increased the election budget by $1,500.

Five hours of work was estimated for each.

Milton now has a total of 55 poll workers. That’s not including Deputy City Manager Stacey Inglis, who will double as the chief manager of tabulation, and Lavinia White, the city’s new election consultant.

Some poll workers have also served on one of three volunteer committees, pulled together to cut the workload of election preparation. Two committees, one for training and one for tabulation, are no longer active.

The Training Committee was responsible for assembling the poll worker training manual. The Tabulation Committee helped determine the best way to count votes and helped finalize the tabulation training manual.

Members of the Communications Committee, headed by Milton Communications Director Greg Botelho, have been making recommendations on how to best inform the public on various aspects of the election through website content, social media posts and printed material. They will continue to meet until the conclusion of the municipal election.

Another factor to consider in the city’s election budget, which has not been previously calculated, is city staff time dedicated to elections.

While the city’s volunteers may have helped, Appen Media estimates tens of thousands of election dollars have been spent in time against a six-figure salary for city employees involved in the process.

In a May interview, City Manager Steve Krokoff said he spent around 30 percent of his time on the city election, which amounts to more than $5,800 in a month based on his current $232,061 salary. Today, half of his work time is spent on election matters.

Krokoff is not alone apportioning time away from regular duties.

Back in May, Inglis was already dedicating half of her work schedule to elections. For Inglis, whose current annual salary is $176,562, that figure jumped up to 100 percent in August — or $14,714 a month. She and City Clerk Tammy Lowit share the responsibility of deputy elections superintendent and deputy ballot clerk.

Lowit, who also serves as the city’s absentee ballot clerk, has a current annual salary of $97,294. She has also dedicated more of her time, around half of it, to election-related work in recent months, and that time will likely increase once advanced voting begins Oct. 16.

Lowit must also deal with an onslaught of open records requests; Krokoff has had his fair share of media inquiries as well.

Appen Media calculates the city has spent a total of $146,694 in city staff time since January, based on time estimates provided by Krokoff from January to September.

From September 2021 to August 2023, Milton City Attorney Ken Jarrard said the city has spent $27,700 in legal

fees related to the November general municipal election — $17,472 more than the 10 percent buffer.

Legal fees are the result of drafting election-related resolutions as part of standard council procedure, or interpreting state election code for city staff. But the city is also billed when Jarrard’s office responds to election inquiries from the media or private citizens.

Fulton County officials said they would have charged Milton $216,565 for its municipal election this year.

With the extra poll workers, the consideration of city staff efforts, and all the legal fees, the city is looking at an election budget of about $280,000.

That figure does not include projected staff time or legal expenses for October and November.

Records show Milton election report reshaped before council presentation

By AMBER PERRY amber@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — As members of Milton’s election advisory committee, two private residents recommended to the City Council last December that the city should run its own election.

Their presentation, and the report provided afterward, did not paint the full picture.

Mark Amick, one of a number of people subpoenaed in the 2020 Fulton County election probe, and Lisa Cauley, president of the Fulton County Republican Women group, each made their way to the podium Dec. 5 with a presentation that excluded portions of a comprehensive draft report. The original report was created by Deputy City Manager Stacey Inglis prior to the meeting.

Inglis, one of two city staff members on the Milton Municipal Election Feasibility Committee, wrote a lengthier, more detailed conclusion of the group’s findings. It consistently referenced state code, and it explained matters that had been reconciled by the city attorney.

Also noteworthy, Inglis dedicated several pages to the risks associated with the city undertaking its own municipal election, such as its lack of experience, public scrutiny, potential staffing issues, voter disenfranchisement and errors associated with hand-counting paper ballots.

Inglis also estimated a higher price for first-year and future costs associated with city-run local elections.

In her report, the first-year cost was estimated at $80,196. The report formally presented to the council by Cauley listed a cost of $72,253.

With one-time costs out of the way, Inglis estimated future municipal elections would cost the city $64,064.

Cauley’s presentation set a future cost of $56,588.

In a recent interview, City Manager Steve Krokoff said Inglis’ report is characteristic of all city staff presentations.

While two councilmembers served on the election committee, Moore and Rick Mohrig, the other four councilmembers and the mayor were not aware of the original draft report from Inglis.

According to emails obtained in an open records request, Mayor Peyton Jamison asked the city manager just this past August about Inglis’ report and why it had not been presented to the council or to the public.

In response, Krokoff said some committee members entered the process with “preconceived notions.”

“This endeavor seemed more like a justification exercise than a true feasibility assessment, which introduced challenges for staff members who tried to present factual information but were consistently rebuffed,” Krokoff said. “Their experience on the committee was distressing and demoralizing.”

Missing portions Major parts of Inglis’ report did not make it to Council Chambers for public consumption. It had been reworked for

an alternative report, sent to city staff Dec. 15 by Councilman Paul Moore four days before the council’s official vote to run its own municipal election.

In that email, Moore wrote: “I hope you will agree that we are delivering a very succinct version of the larger document (Inglis’ draft) and a very direct reflection of what was already presented and was compelling in the December 5th meeting.”

‘Undermining the process’ He also said some committee members indicated city staff were “undermining” the process.

“Their dissatisfaction with the staff-completed draft report suggested to me their reluctance to provide an unbiased assessment to the City Council,” Krokoff wrote the mayor. “It also became apparent that I lacked the necessary support to counter this narrative, given the presence of two city councilmembers and two highly influential community members.”

In a recent interview with Appen Media, Krokoff elaborated on the entire election committee experience.

He said he explained the committee’s makeup of two councilmembers, two city staff members and two members from the general public to the City Council in a September 2021 email.

But, in hindsight, Krokoff said the group should have followed the format of most other city committees — seven appointees, each selected by councilmembers, for more diversity.

“I regret that composition of the committee,” Krokoff said.

Mark Amick and Lisa Cauley, two private residents on the Milton Municipal Election Feasibility Committee, formally presented the group’s recommendation to the City Council last December. Their presentation was loosely based on a report created

by Deputy City Manager Stacey Inglis. It was missing a few things, though, like Inglis’ risk-award analysis and an accurate cost estimate.

All eyes on Milton As Milton pursues running its own municipal election, other North Fulton cities are paying attention. Some have allocated money in their 2024 budgets to follow suit. The City of Atlanta is watching too. In April, Milton City Manager Steve Krokoff wrote to the council that an Atlanta official informed him that they would be watching how Milton handles its municipal election. “As pioneers in this process, we know that all eyes are on us, and failure is not an option,” Krokoff wrote.

Krokoff said. “Stacy’s report was done as part of the committee, but also at my direction. I was the one who said from the very beginning: ‘We need to ensure that we have a risk-reward in there.’”

Northside ICA schedules St. Patrick’s Day Festival SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Northside Irish Culture & Arts, a local nonprofit, announced the second Annual Northside St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival is scheduled for March 23, 2024 in Sandy Springs.

The parade will kick off at 11 a.m., with the festival following immediately on the City Green adjacent to Sandy Springs City Hall at 1 Galambos Way. The parade will begin at Lake Forest Drive and Mount Vernon Highway and is set to last about 45 minutes.

Northside Irish Culture & Arts was born in early 2022 with the intent of creating a family-friendly celebration of St. Patrick and all things Irish in north Metro Atlanta.

Sprucing up the area In other matters at the meeting, councilmembers unanimously approved a slate of items addressing aesthetic improve-

ments.

Public Works Director Marty Martin presented a contract with SCA construction for the rehabilitation of Falcon Chase Lane Pond, which the city is responsible for maintaining.

City staff previously approved a contract with Atkins North America for a study of the Roberts Drive Sidepath project but needed the City Council to approve about $60,000 in additional funding.

Director Martin presented two additional items related to the Johnson Ferry Road and Mount Vernon Highway Improvement project.

Part of the project calls for removing utility poles at the Roswell Road Triangle and Veterans Park, requiring underground burial of lines.

The current phase of the project is right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation and constriction bidding.

First, the City Council approved a budget amendment, requested by staff, for Comcast and AT&T to bury their respective utilities underground.

The City Council then approved an

agreement with Comcast worth almost $240,000 for the relocation effort. An agreement with AT&T is pending and estimated to cost around $200,000.

Adequate funding is available in capital contingency to fund the utility relocations and the other projects, Martin said.

In other business, the City Council considered an alcoholic beverage license for Perrine’s Tasting Room at 5920 Roswell Road during the public hearing portion of the meeting. The license is for wine and alcohol consumption on business premises, wine tasting and retail packaging.

The applicant, Perrine Marie-Claude Prieur Gallardo, attended the public hearing Oct. 17.

“If you’re not familiar… she runs one of the best wine stores in all of Metro Atlanta on Howell Mill Road,” Mayor Paul said. “If you are a French wine lover, she is the one to go see.”

“I do live in Sandy Springs too, so I am very glad to be in my city now,” Gallardo said.

Gallardo said Perrine’s Tasting Room will be open sometime in November.

“Last Friday Congregation Beth Israel held a ‘Night of Unity’ with a candlelight vigil that we had an extra presence at,” Miller wrote in an email. “We do have the synagogue on a frequent patrol. That frequent patrol began the Saturday the conflict began and will continue.”

In a follow-up email, Miller confirmed mosques are on the frequent patrol list as well. There’s one in Cumming.

Dunwoody PIO Sgt. Michael Cheek said police are patrolling the city’s “synagogues

and other religious facilities more often as call volume allows.” In a follow-up email, Cheek confirmed that mosques were included in his sentiment and said police were patrolling “all potential targets.”

Public information staff in other north Atlanta cities also said police have either increased presence at places of worship or remained in close contact with local faith leaders, such as in Johns Creek, Roswell and Alpharetta.

“The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety is always alert and vigilant to any events; be they local, regional, national, or international; that could influence the safety of our community,” Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard wrote in an email. “The current situation in the Middle East is no exception. We are in close communication with other agencies and local faith leaders and will work in partnership with them to quickly and appropriately address any threats.”

The mayor with no name The City of Sandy Springs doesn’t have a mayor. Or perhaps it has two.

You wouldn’t be able to tell if you looked through the city’s financial records.

In response to CARL APPEN an Open Records Director of Content and Development carl@appenmedia.com request for payroll data from an eight-week period, the city redacted the name of every employee that collected a check. The list is over 3,300 lines long and has a total paid amount of $10.4 million.

According to the city’s website, Sandy Springs employs around 370 people. It’s difficult to reconcile that number with the financial data provided to Appen Media.

Do each of the city’s employees earn $14,054 a month? Exactly how many people are on the payroll? It’s unclear.

One possible explanation is that the list spans multiple pay periods. So, if an employee is paid bi-monthly, their name may show up more than once. It would explain why the city made two separate payments with the job title “MAYOR.” On the other hand, that math doesn’t quite add up either.

In a document obtained this summer by Appen Media, the city lists 332 people as receiving paychecks in the Public Safety Department.

There are six City Council members and a mayor. At least we think there is only one.

Then a city manager and, for now, one assistant city manager. Plus a city clerk and her assistant.

So that’s 343.

Is it possible that 27 people operate the rest of the City of Sandy

Springs? It is, after all, the beacon of a city that “takes the people private,” outsourcing all operations to downsize big government. Oh, actually, they walked that landmark privatization back in 2019.

Zoning, code enforcement and permitting all have managers. Economic Development is its own department, as is Finance. All the city’s parks and facilities must be maintained. Public Works is a behemoth of a job. And of course, there’s the Communications Department, which we’re pretty sure exists.

Does that sound like 27 people to you? Here, in the City of Sandy Springs?

I don’t think so either. So now we’re back where we started.

I’ll leave you with two things worth noting.

We filed identical open records requests to all our Metro Atlanta cities.

Sandy Springs is the only one that redacted names of every employee.

That request from the summer I mentioned, in which the city provided public safety payroll information, carries a clue.

In the summer document the city redacted the names of all police officers, including the chief, but it listed the names of firefighters. In this more recent request seeking employment pay stubs for the whole city, those firefighters’ names are now hidden.

As our public records lawsuit against Sandy Springs moves forward, the city’s transparency grows cloudier. Or, maybe it’s becoming more clear.

Why the change? I’m not sure. I asked the clerk’s office and communications team to no avail.

Maybe chalk it up to the fact that the city has two mayors. Or none at all.

Several odds and ends about the week’s news I just ran out of razor blades.

I got a large box of the twin-blade Gillette Sensor refills as a gift some time ago, and now I’m out.

Stores no longer carry them.

When the twin blade cartridge came along, the whole apparatus was a godsend, slim at the top, easy to maneuver around your chin, on your upper lip.

Today, razors wield three, four and even five blades. Leaving aside the obstruction a head that size creates in the mirror, how is it possible to fit something that massive on your upper lip without erasing your nose?

I can switch to a disposable twin blade, but there’s a reason they call them “disposable.”

Another option might be to order them online, but really?

I can grow a beard. It worked for Lincoln.

Business as unusual Gov. Brian Kemp announced Oct. 3 that, for the 10th consecutive year, Georgia has been named the No. 1 state for business by Area Development magazine.

How could you not know this? It was on every news website in the state.

It’s hailed from the rafters every year about this time.

I don’t want to trip local economic development agencies halfway through a victory lap, but not all financial publications place Georgia atop the list of best states to do business.

CNBC ranks Georgia 4th. Forbes has us at 6th. We’re No. 8 with Precision Global Consulting, U.S. News and World Report ranks the Peach State at No. 14.

What gives?

For your convenience Tax season is here, and if that isn’t bad enough, consider that county tax collectors now charge a “convenience fee” for payments made through certain channels.

Sometimes, not always, E-checks can be used without a fee.

In Fulton County, you pay a 2.5 percent fee for the convenience of paying your taxes with a card. Pick a card, any card. Pay a fee.

DeKalb County taxpayers pay a fee of 2.35 percent for using a credit card.

If you pay in person with a debit card, you’re still charged a 1.5 percent fee for your convenience.

One could bypass the whole thing by paying in person with cash or mailing a check.

Or – and I don’t necessarily recommend this – one could move to Gwinnett County. They don’t charge convenience fees for tax payments.

The Diving Swan The Andale (Kansas) High School football team did something recently that it hadn’t done in nearly five years.

It lost.

Andale’s streak of 57 consecutive wins was the longest in the country until the Oct. 13 overtime loss to Cheney High School.

I played only my freshman year at Andale. I was big for my age, so I played offensive and defensive tackle – and kicker. I kicked off at the beginning of the game and after we scored.

Most times, I could kick it all the way to the 10- or 15-yard line. Not bad for a rookie.

We had a play called “The Diving Swan” that was a trick play for an onside kick. I was to trip and fall on my approach to the tee. Then, as I picked myself off the turf amid the laughter of the opponents, my teammate standing next to the tee was to side-kick the ball while we rushed forward for the recovery.

Even as a freshman, I thought it was ridiculous, so I intentionally botched things so badly in practice the coaches opted to have someone else fill in whenever The Diving Swan was called.

Whew!

The only time we ever used the Diving Swan was during a day game in front of the entire student body.

When the play was called, I remained safely on the sidelines grinning at the comedy about to unfold on the field.

Except, the public address announcer didn’t know that.

“Kicking off for Andale, Pat Fox!!”

I pulled off my helmet and ran up and down the sidelines waving up at the box, pointing at my jersey number.

Too late. The play was already underway, and it was a disaster.

We lost the game, and my name was forever attached to that debacle.

Fall fun with daffodils present spring’s delight Nothing is better than the heat of summer giving way to the crisp autumn air. Chilly temps mean it’s the perfect time to carve your pumpkin and plant spring flowering MARI DAVIS bulbs. My favorite Guest Columnist bulb is the daffodil due to its endearing quality of resurrecting itself year after year with little or no maintenance. A forgiving bulb: what could be more inspiring in life than a daffodil?

Daffodil bulbs are perennials- the garden darling of a plant! They have a period of growth and flowering, which is followed by a period of dormancy when they die back to ground level at the end of each growing season.

“Perennial” comes from the Latin word “perennis” which means to last the year through. It signifies lasting or existing for a long or apparently infinite time; enduring or continually recurring. This is much less work on the gardener looking for colorful flowers with less maintenance.

Planting time in North Metro Atlanta is October 1 to Christmas. These tough bulbs need the cold weather in December to February to hardily put on buds.

How deep to plant? This is so easy with daffodils! I’m sure you’ve seen a daffodil that has been forced to bloom in water! It’s easy to do and proves that the bulb does not need the soil for it to bloom. Planted in soil, the bulb has a permanent home and protection for many years, receiving rain and warmth so it will live happily for decades to come. Experts suggest that the bottom of the bulb be planted three times the height of the bulb (e.g., a 2” tall bulb should rest its bottom at 6” deep in the soil). This really makes sense when you see the bulb grow and know that its stem and leaves will need support to hold that lovely flower bud when it turns down and toward the sun and the blooms explode with color. As you plant, just look at the bulb in your hand and put it in the ground three times its height.

How far apart should the bulbs be planted, you ask? Generally spacing bulbs 4-6” apart will allow the bulbs to multiply over many years, and you can put off thinning the bulbs for about five years for most varieties. In

a future column, we’ll go over how to lift and split bulbs to make lots more plants! For free!

Spring bloom time is February to April in our locale. By planting early, middle- and late-blooming bulbs, you’ll extend the bloom time of your bed tremendously.

What does a daffodil bulb have in common with a battery? Does it really come back once the flower dies? Your daffodil bulb is reliably the “comeback kid” when you… do nothing! That’s right, you heard me say it here. The definition of a bulb is a plant that stores its complete life cycle in an underground storage structure. It has a vertically oriented shape with a lower basal stem and root structures coming out of the bottom. Like an onion or a garlic bulb, it has a bottom with roots and a top with leaves. At the end of a growing season, the above-ground leaves and stem naturally recharge the “battery” underground and restore the bulb with its strength.

The daffodil bulbs will return year after year if you let the bulb in the ground recover its strength by allowing the stems and leaves to return their life forces as carbohydrates back to the bulb after blooming. Daffodil bulbs will rejuvenate and multiply in the summer months after their spring bloom when left alone and undisturbed. It takes about six weeks for the aboveground leaves and stems to dry ‘down to brown’ after which the dry leaves can be removed without harm from the bloom site.

Daffodils4Hope is a communitywide daffodil planting campaign to raise awareness for cancer survivorship in partnership between Johns Creek Beautification, Inc. and CanCare Atlanta. We help volunteer groups of all ages plant 1,000 daffodils at a time for a “done-in-a-day” project to raise awareness for cancer survivorship programs. We will be planting 10,000 daffodils this year in eight digs across Johns Creek. We work all year to gather/plan the dig sites then pair them with hosts of volunteers that come from all walks of life! Rotary Clubs, School Beta Clubs, Young Men’s Service League, church groups, school groups, neighborhood associations all love to plant daffodils and they can become very proficient at it! The City Springs Theatre Conservatory, the arts education training arm of the City Springs Theatre Company, is designed to equip the next generation with the tools to succeed in the performing arts.

The Conservatory includes an educational guide for teachers to be able to connect musicals to classroom studies after students attend a matinee.

Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul wrote a note for educators who take their classes to a student matinee.

“Without question, art enhances a city’s economic health and enriches its quality of life,” Paul said. “More importantly, it unites and brings communities together.”

The Davis Academy sent over 300 people to the Oct. 18 student matinee for “Fiddler on the Roof” at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center’s Byers Theatre.

Connecting students to ‘Fiddler’ Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, “Fiddler on the Roof” tells the story of a tight-knit Jewish community in Czarist Russia at the beginning of the 20th century.

Tevye, the musical’s protagonist, tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social norms and growing antisemitism.

Broadway’s Jacob Fishel, who plays Tevye in the City Springs production, said watching “Fiddler” as a student had a profound impact on his decision to pursue a performing arts career.

“That’s what I thought about this morning when I didn’t want to get out of bed,” Fishel said. “There’s going to be a little Jacob there, and what I do on stage might change things.”

The Davis Academy, the largest Reform Jewish Day School in the country, sent a 275 fourth through eighth grade students, 47 faculty and staff members and 38 supportive parents to the matinee Oct. 18.

“The sizable turnout demonstrates the enthusiasm and commitment of the school to embrace the powerful learning that live theatre affords,” Principal Drew Frank said.

Students at the Davis Academy participated in a series of classroom activities designed to deepen the connection to the themes explored in the musical, such as community, family and traditions. “‘Fiddler on the Roof’, more relevant than ever, serves as a poignant mirror to life, and witnessing it live allowed our students to deeply connect with the narrative,” Performing Arts Director Kendrick Phillips said.

Students are the focus Led by Executive Director Natalie DeLancey and Tony Award winner and Atlanta native Shuler Hensley as Artistic Director, the City Springs Theatre Company has served over 158,000 patrons and 124,000 students through musicals and educational program offerings since 2017.

“We’re serving Metro Atlanta, and that’s the goal,” DeLancy said. “We certainly want to make sure that we’re always serving here in Sandy Springs… but the more we can do, the better it is for the community.”

The theater company hosted a matinee Oct. 12 for Houston County students who traveled more than two hours by bus.

Student matinees are scheduled to resume in March 2024 for the City Springs Theatre Company’s production of “Beauty and the Beast.”

Over 4,000 tickets to the four student matinees for “Beauty and the Beast” have already been sold, Delancy said.

“Our goal is to do this a couple times a year, so we want to serve roughly 10,000 kids a year through all of the efforts we do,” Delancy said.

She estimates 300 students receive the Conservancy’s weekly educational programming and theater training at their Northridge facility.

The new Marietta facility is used as a production shop for building sets, like the original design of the City Springs Production Company’s “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Henry Faal, a senior at Lanier High School and Conservatory student, wants to pursue a career in the performing arts following graduation and has already started auditioning for colleges.

“This is my first time seeing ‘Fiddler’ actually, and I loved it,” Faal said. “This is definitely what I want to do for the rest of my life.”
