Redefine your summer at Baylor School’s Camp Walkabout It’s summer and it’s time to put down the books. The question is, what should you pick up? This summer, make it a map, a paddle board, a kayak, and a whole new set of experiences with Baylor School’s Camp Walkabout for kids 11 to 14-years-old. Our 690-acre campus is located on a river adjacent to a lake at the foot of three mountains. And, of course, Chattanooga is one of the Southeast’s premiere adventure destinations. Our campers get to kayak and canoe on the Chattooga River, paddleboard in the Tennessee River Gorge, rock climb on the Cumberland Plateau, hike through Cloudland Canyon, and sleep under the southern stars. And it’s only two hours from Atlanta! Our camp sessions are: Session 1: June 12 - 24, 2016 Session 2: July 3 - 15, 2016 Baylor sophomore Miles Marks, a Baylor School boarding student from Atlanta, has always enjoyed the outdoors, mainly fishing and hunting. Two summers ago, he introduced himself to outdoor activities like kayaking, hiking, rappelling, and climbing at Baylor’s Camp Walkabout and it was love at first sight. “It was a great introduction. I

loved all of it,” says Miles. So this summer, come enjoy one of the Southeast’s premier adventure destinations -- no previous outdoor experience is necessary, just an adventurous

Strong kids, rock star role models Every camp wants to provide an experience that is memorable, fun, and that has lasting meaningful impact. Strong Rock certainly has those ends in mind, but there is more they are expecting their campers to take home. James and Corie Himstedt, the owners and directors, understand that parents are looking for more than nostalgic moments of childhood past. Parents want to know the experiences they choose for their kids will help them develop the range of social skills, moral character and practical tools necessary for success in an ever challenging world. The counselors and staff at Strong Rock are serious about their responsibility as role models for campers. They take pride in the quality of the instruction they deliver in skill classes and their greatest pleasure is seeing campers growing in knowledge and character. Outside of camp’s version of the classroom, counselors look for opportunities to help campers develop meaningful relationships, navigate good

decision-making, wade through moral challenges, and discover what God wants them to know about Him and themselves. Strong Rock is a co-ed Christian camp for 1st through 10th graders, offering a wide variety of skill classes, exciting evening programs, and genuine biblical discovery. They will host an Open House on Sunday, March 20th, from 1:30-5:30pm which is the perfect opportunity for campers to see some of what to expect from their Strong Rock experience. After a short tour, families can grab a snack and head off to enjoy activities. Campers will get to meet some of the staff and parents have the opportunity to spend time with the directors. The camp is conveniently located just 1.5hrs northeast of Atlanta in Cleveland, GA. For more information, please visit www.strongrockcamp.com or call Rebecca at (706) 348-1533. Summer fun, adventures and learning With Spring Break around the corner and summer closely following, there are a lot of fun options waiting for your child! For many children, this summer may be their first experience participating in a summer camp. This could be a really exciting time or a very stressful time for your child, depending on their personality. If your child is ordinarily very shy, it’s important to prepare them for a new social experience with other children. Great friendships can be made over summer camp but it’s important to give tips on how to transition. 1. Practice at Home – Give your child an example of situations they may find themselves in at summer camp. What kind of conversations will they have? Will they eat at a cafeteria with other kids? If you know where they’ll be going on field trips, visit the locations beforehand. 2. Talk with the Summer Camp Workers – The more they know about your child’s shyness or anxiety, the more they will be able to help your child acclimate. 3. Validate their feelings – It’s important to listen to your child’s fears and acknowledge their anxiety while also encouraging them to make new friends and help them get excited about the camp experience. At Kids ‘R’ Kids we are excited about our epic Summer Camp Olympics Adventure! All of our campers, from 5 to 12 years old will enjoy a taste of culture, customs, and cuisine from nations all across Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas! If your child has never participated in summer camp – this is the year to do it! Our professional teachers and staff know how to make every child feel welcome and have a ton of FUN! Sign up today!

Sports and mental health: what you should know

Preschool Summer Camp Johns Creek United Methodist Church Parents Morning Out and Preschool

By: Paolo del Vecchio, MSW (NAPSI)—For many participants, team sports are more than just a game. In fact, a growing body of research supports the idea that physical exercise is associated with decreasing the risk of depression and reducing its symptoms. Participating in athletics has many benefits, such as building fitness, teamwork and self-confidence. Further, participating in sports or fitness activities with others aligns with two of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) major dimensions of recovery—health and community. However, athletics can also involve risk. Throughout the seasons of professional, collegiate, high school and amateur athletics, fans keep their fingers crossed that players will make it through the season without an injury. One issue receiving a great deal of attention is the connection between concussions and depression. Numerous athletes with histories of concussion have spoken out about their depression, and this problem is not limited to professional athletes, who get paid millions of dollars to put their health on the line. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), young athletes—both male and female—suffer concussions in many different sports. One study examining data from over 30,000 adolescents found that concussions were associated with a 3.3-fold increase in the risk of depression. Athletes are also at risk of prescription drug misuse, which can lead to addiction and misuse of other drugs. A recent Sports Illustrated special report introduced readers to several young athletes who had initially used prescription pain medications, then became dependent and moved on to using heroin. The article chronicled the life of one young man, a three-sport star in high school, who eventually died from a drug overdose. Fortunately, help is available. At the high school and college level, SAMHSA supports programs like the Safe Schools/ Healthy Students and Garrett Lee Smith Suicide Prevention initiatives. Athletics programs offer their own support, but too often, athletes are unwilling to ask for help until it is too late. By sharing their stories, athletes are helping to raise awareness that it is okay to seek help. Professional football star Brandon Marshall is an example of an athlete who has the courage to speak out publicly about his experi-

In 2012, SAMHSA presented Marshall, along with several other athletes, with Voice Awards for their efforts. In addition, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) offers a helpful publication, “Mind, Body and Sport: Understanding and Supporting Student-Athlete Mental Wellness,” which includes the stories of athletes and coaches who have personally struggled with mental and substance use problems. The publication encourages coaches, athletic trainers, and teammates to be aware of problems and offer support. However, many people don’t know what to look for or how to help. That’s why SAMHSA supports initiatives like The Campaign to Change Direction, which educates people about five signs of distress: withdrawal, agitation, hopelessness, decline in personal care, and change in personality. Knowing the signs means we can watch out for ourselves and for the people around us, be it our family, our friends or our teammates. Working together is important, not just on the field or court, but in the game of life. Hoops N Sand (HNS) is a youth training program owned and operated by Samuel Hines, a former professional basketball player. Samuel’s passion for children influenced him to start HNS, formerly known as Up With Kids Sports (UWKS). Coach Hines’ programs are designed to provide instruction in fundamental basketball and volleyball skills and educate, elevate, and empower our youth through after school enrichment programs, clinics/camps, and group or private coaching. HNS evaluates a player’s skill set and utilizes appropriate tools to improve the player’s knowledge of the game and skills, developing confidence, self-esteem, hand-eye coordination, physical conditioning, and much more. Rocketry eggs students on to studying STEM (NAPSI)—Some clever kids will win a share of $100,000--for not breaking eggs. That’s because they’ll take part in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC), the world’s largest student rocket contest and a key piece of the aerospace and defense industry’s strategy to build a stronger U.S. workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This year’s contest challenges students to design, build and fly a rocket carrying two raw eggs to an altitude of 850 feet and return them to ground with the eggs uncracked within 44 to 46 seconds. Much more than broken eggs are at stake. According to the U.S. Department of Education, this country has developed as a global leader, in large part, through the genius and hard work of its scientists, engineers and innovators. In a world that’s becoming increasingly complex, where success is driven not only by what you know but by what you can do with what you know, it’s more important than ever for our youth to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information.

These are the types of skills that students learn by studying science, technology, engineering and math— subjects collectively known as STEM. As President Obama remarked, “[Science] is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. It is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world.” As part of this effort to develop future scientists, approximately 4,000 middle and high school students from across the nation compete in TARC each year. Sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) and the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), TARC was created in the fall of 2002 as a one-time celebration of the Centennial of Flight, but by popular demand became an annual program. Based on local qualification flights, the top 100 teams are invited to Washington, D.C. in May for the National Finals. Top placing teams split more than $100,000 in cash and scholarships and the overall winning team will travel to the United Kingdom to compete in the International Rocketry Challenge taking

place at the Farnborough Airshow in July. The contest’s rules and scoring parameters change every cycle to challenge the students’ ingenuity and

encourage a fresh approach to rocket design. www.rocketcontest.org www.aia-aerospace.org (703) 358-1000
