Another great year — best ever! What an incredible year for our annual Best of North Atlanta contest honoring the best businesses our communities have to offer. As always, the winners are decided by our readers who cast votes via an online portal. Every year, I think there is no way we can top the previous year, and every year I am pleasantly surprised. This year’s contest saw over 30,000 voters in some 100 categories for a grand total of more than 300,000 nominations. We had to add a new voting tally mechanism halfway through because of the sheer volume of votes! The final list of winners and runners up is impressive and represents all corners of the North Atlanta market. We had a lot of repeat award winners, but we also saw a number of first-time recipients — some from brand new businesses that have clearly worked hard to make a name for themselves, quickly. I tell people all the time that, in many ways, we live in a bubble. Very few other places in the country have high quality schools, public safety, efficient government, immaculate parks — and incredible places of business, all in one. We are honored to host this contest every year and are thankful to the readers who took time out of their day to cast votes. or some companies, integrating into the community can play a large role in how they conduct their business. That’s certainly the case for two local business owners who have carved their own path in their industries and proven themselves to be the “best” in their communities. At the 2018 Best of North Atlanta Awards Gala sponsored by Appen Media Group, two people were honored with two inaugural awards for their work. Dr. Gary Willis of Willis Chiropractic was the recipient of the 2018 Pillar Award in Appen Media Group’s 2018 Best of North Atlanta contest. This award is presented to one of the most outstanding businesses that has a positive impact on the community. Willis graduated from Life Chiropractic College (Life University) in 1986 where he received his Doctorate of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree. Gary is married to Janet and they have two children, Tim and Allie. Some of Willis’s accolades include Who’s Who among American Teachers 1996, member of the Board of Zoning and Appeals in Milton, a member of the Sidewalk board in Alpharetta and voted best Chiropractor in North Atlanta from 2009 to 2019. CELEBRATING THE MAN BEHIND THE PRACTICE Sharing part of the story that shaped our wonderful surgeon
“I truly love my job,” proclaims Dr. Burke Robinson, FACS. “I wake up in the morning excited to come to work. I have the ability to help people change their lives and that’s how I always have seen my role. Whether it is correcting a child’s protruding ears to resolve the bullying, to improving the overly distracting nose of the shy overlooked teenager, to the reconstruction of the grandparent ravaged by an aggressive skin cancer. Over and over, I have seen how physical self-image really impacts a sense of selfworth and personal confidence. It can be frustrating and difficult if your external appearance doesn’t necessarily match who you feel you are on the inside. When I help patients overcome that frustration, they are no longer focused on imperfections.” Dr. Robinson learned the impact of that type of frustration early in his life. He watched his mother, who was diagnosed with MS when Dr. Robinson was barely in preschool, struggle to overcome the limitations of her body. She remained upbeat and determined, despite the difficulty of raising her three children while the disease ravaged her system. Later, when Dr. Robinson reached his teen years, his father suffered a neck injury that would render him disabled. As the oldest child, Dr. Robinson became the caretaker - helping out with younger siblings, running errands, and taking his parents to all their medical appointments. “Yes, I guess I was the Uber of ‘74,” he quips. “I shuttled them back and forth, so I was regularly on the patient-side of things when
I was growing up... the worry, the confusion, keeping up with medications, I understand all of that very well.” With both parents at limited capacity, financial strains in the home tightened severely. Dr. Robinson stepped in as much as possible to assist with bills and expenses. “For a while, neither one of my parents could work. It was tough, particularly at that age, “he recalls. “I got a job after school as the janitor... basically, I’d go to school all day, and then start cleaning up after my friends. Not fun, but it had to be done.” Even with that pressure, he achieved an academic level that qualified him for scholarship funding at The University of Arizona. Off at school, Dr. Robinson continued to work and save in order to send money home. “Once, when I took the Greyhound bus home for Thanksgiving break, and my mom met me at the station,” remembers Dr. Robinson, “then went by the grocery store to do some shopping. As she checked out, I noticed her trying to hide from me that she was using food stamps.” His extracurricular jobs provided valuable experience that leave an indelible impressions for his future approach as a physician. “I’ve been an orderly cleaning bedpans and administering enemas; I’ve been an ER clerk typing forms and balancing triage,” avows Dr. Robinson. “Everyone on staff deserves to be treated with the utmost respect. It’s a team effort. The people around you contribute to your success.” The work ethic instilled in him was too strong for anything to set him back. “Both of my parents stayed positive. Seriously, my dad should be a motivational speaker,” Dr. Robinson asserts. “Education’s a big focus for our family and I took that seriously. I still do for my kids.” Academic excellence in college led to medical school and opportunities from there consistently propelled him forward on his path. Every

time an insurmountable hurdle would present itself, something would turn up to lift him over the road block and set him back in motion. From the sudden donation of the car he needed to complete his clinical rotations in med school to a last-minute change presenting an incredible residency opportunity to the perfect match for his fellowship linking him with a physician who’d become a lifelong friend and mentor, Dr. Robinson credits faith. “I see God’s hand in all of it. All of it. No doubt.” In 1995, Dr. Robinson was scouted by huge Atlanta ENT practice of over 40 surgeons and moved here to join their team as their facial plastic surgeon. The medical group continued to grow, perhaps too quickly, and eventually folded in 2001. That’s when he decided to branch out on his own into private practice. “I took a gamble but I knew it was right for me. From the day I established this practice, I’ve wanted the primary focus to be client relationships and a familyfriendly atmosphere for my team. In fact, I consider the staff to be a family. Family means more than anything else. When my kids were growing up, I’d coordinate their calendars with mine and managed to only miss five of their events in all those years. In my eyes, my children are definitely my greatest pride over any award I’ve ever won.” That perspective balances every part of the business. Dr. Robinson’s steadfast resolution to uphold a beneficial quality of life translates into low staff turnover, and staunch loyalty from employees and patients alike. He sees everyone as an integral part of the overall system, and values his opportunity to serve others as part of his career. “I’m an empathetic person,” he admits, “and [in medicine] if you’re not compassionate, what are you doing in this profession? These are big changes in their life and I do get choked up when patients are
overwhelmed by their results. It’s the ultimate satisfaction to give that kind of joy to someone’s life. You know, a few years after this practice had become successful, my mother, who I lost last year, sent me a prayer. I keep it on my desk at the office. Part of it says ‘Oh, Thou kind and gracious Father, grant me an ever grateful heart...Teach me, O God, to be rich in good works, always ready to come to the aid of my brethren, ever willing to communicate according to my ability...’ and as I read the verse each day, I feel centered in this purpose.”

The best breakfast is here! Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants. There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market. For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene. The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised. Just a few examples: We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice. We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all. Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on. We are very proud to be once again voted Best Breakfast in The Best of North Atlanta and we want to thank our loyal clientele who obviously appreciates our uncompromising commitment to serving the same menu year after year after year without changing a thing.

An interview with Dr. Taylor By Alyssa McNamara
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Taylor after his 2018 Best of win and again this week after his 3rd consecutive Best of win to talk about his continued success. The following is a compilation of both interviews. Last year’s interview took place while Dr. Taylor held his newborn son Broderick or “Bodi.” As we discussed his practice’s progress, he laughed at the “happy chaos” that is his home life. Even without a newborn in his arms, he is as I remember him – warm and likeable. I looked back at my notes from my last interview and my observations still apply: “After speaking with him for an hour, I am well aware of the reasons for his renown. He is warm, instantly calming, respectful and shockingly intelligent. Despite having a youthful face that, at first glance, might make you question his experience, his knowledge and surgical ability are well established: both are touted in patient reviews and displayed in a vast surgical portfolio. He is loved and respected by his patients and his staff, and it is easy to see why. He is, to say the least, a genuine individual and accomplished physician.” Congratulations on winning both Best Dermatologist and Best Vein Specialist of North Atlanta yet again! You must be proud. It is quite an honor to win these titles, let alone several years in a row! To what do you attribute to your success?
per se. I have been trained by exceptional physicians and I work with exceptional people. I strive to always be patient-centered, to put the patient first, to read up, perform extra research for my patients and advocate for them. Quality controls, back-up systems and patient care processes are an area of special interest for me. I have been an airplane pilot for over ten years, and I believe that the strategies for safety and quality that aviation emphasizes have translated into improved processes within my own practice. But most importantly, I really owe so much to our amazing staff! We have the same amazing staff that we did last year with one excellent addition. Given that, we are a small practice with only 8 staff members, I am beyond thankful for their expertise, compassion and the concern that they have for our patients. We spend a lot of time together given our 10 to 12 hour work days, so it is invaluable that we all get along and not only like our jobs but strive to excel and improve our processes. We have been open over two and half years now and are constantly trying to improve wherever we can. I think that’s part of our success: patients recognize our genuine concern and commitment to excellence. Is there something that you feel sets you apart?
I am very fortunate to live and work in an area that has exceptional healthcare including outstanding dermatologists and remarkable Mohs surgeons. Moreover, residents of North Fulton are smart consumers, who do their research on their potential physicians. Given this, I truly value the confidence that my patients have placed in me.
Dr. Taylor: Actually I do believe I spend an unusual amount of time with my patients. As a procedural dermatologist, I am used to a smaller volume of patients with longer visits so that translates over to my general dermatology patients. Granted sometimes that means my schedule runs behind, but ultimately our patients leave knowing that they received thorough, high quality care. And I appreciate the understanding my patients show me, because I think that they can tell that if I am running behind that it is because I chose to give a prior patient the time he or she needed rather than run on schedule.

Dr. Taylor: Well thank you very much! You’re right. It is an honor to win and I am extremely appreciative of the accolade.
multiple aspects of surgical dermatology, so I feel that I am able to address some of the extra concerns that patients may have that would otherwise be referred to other specialists or simply not be handled, and I perform these services at the level you would expect from someone who is fellowship-trained and boardcertified. For example, I can treat medically significant vein disease with various procedures such as laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy then, once resolved, clear up the cosmetic vein issues with sclerotherapy or laser treatments. I am also one of the only physicians in Georgia with a lab that allows me to cure melanoma with true Mohs surgery. In general, these would be treated by different specialists or would be treated using non-equivalent techniques. Could you please comment on your background and experience? Dr. Taylor: I believe my experience is notable given my number of years in practice. Surgeons gain experience and perfect their skills through research and practice. As a result of training at very busy institutions then working for some of the busiest practices in Florida, I have performed over ten
thousand dermatologic procedures. I completed my fellowship 5 years ago. Having been a Mohs surgeon at the University of Florida and also working in private practice in Florida before moving to Atlanta to be closer to family, I was lucky enough to take care of a great many patients who had extremely large cancers and required extensive reconstruction. As you might imagine, Florida residents need considerable dermatologic care. I am honored to take care of people with genuine need and am lucky to have been prepared by outstanding mentors who trained me. Upon starting my own practice here in Alpharetta, I already had the volume of experience usually found with a Mohs surgeon who has been in practice much longer. Anything else you’d like to say? Dr. Taylor: I really just want to say thank you very much! Thank you to our staff: you are valued and wonderful and we wouldn’t be continuing to excel without each and every one of you! Also thank you so very much to all of our patients and our community! Your confidence and support is greatly appreciated and rewarding. xquisite Living owner, Zaina Wuest, and her team, are honored to be voted Best Furniture/Home Décor in the 2019 Best of North Atlanta contest. In just a few short years, Zaina Wuest has transformed her side gig as an interior designer to a thriving furniture and home design business.
Exquisite Living opened its doors in 2016 with a store on Atlanta Highway. The space has since more than doubled from 3,200 square feet to 8,200 square feet. In 2017, Wuest left her corporate job to run the store full time. This year, Exquisite Living opened its second location in Alpharetta City Center, right across from City Hall. The stylish furniture and elegant décor are right at home among the boutiques of the downtown. Wuest credits her company’s fast growth and success to its superior customer service and the bonds she forms with her clients. “It’s about the relationship and not feeling like you’ve gone somewhere and somebody just tried to sell you something,” she said. Exquisite Living employs four consultants with an educational background in interior design. “It’s one of the things we do differently, which is the reason our design side has done tremendously,” Wuest said. “Most furniture stores offer complementary design service, but that’s just a sales person going in there and seeing what inventory they can pull out of the store.” The designers work with the sales team and the client to help the homeowners come up with a plan for their space. “We discuss with the client what their priorities are, their budget,” Wuest said. “We’re really big on respecting budget and timeline.”
When she set out to build Exquisite Living, Wuest studied the factors that usually prevent someone from hiring a professional designer. Many shoppers feel pressured by sales people who put artificial deadlines on the design process, she said. Wuest then set out to eliminate those hang-ups from her business model. “The client can take a look at [the plan] and say ‘Today I have budget for two rooms. Six months down the road when my husband gets his bonus, I can do upstairs,’ and so on and so forth,” She said. “I think that’s a big differentiator for us. No one feels pressured.” The designs give homeowners confidence in how their rooms will turn out. “Once they get the plan they feel comfortable because they can visualize what their home is going to look like and now the decision is up to them when they want to

This strategy of putting service before sales has proven fruitful, with many clients returning to Exquisite Living for multiple rooms or even multiple houses. Wuest said developing trust with the homeowners is the most valuable currency for her.
Another way the company is getting involved in the community, Exquisite Living recently partnered with Appen Media Group to hold a room makeover sweepstakes. One lucky Herald newspaper reader won a $5,000 room redesign.
With a new location in the heart of Alpharetta, Wuest is looking for new ways to have Exquisite Living be involved with the community. She is researching ways the business can help local philanthropic groups. “I really want to decorate for those children that suffer from cancer and have just a few days left, where they can be in a room that

Nestled in the heart of Alpharetta near downtown, FSAPS is accessible and strategically located. With the student population approximately 675, FSAPS emphasizes small classes and an intimate student-teacher ratio. This classroom model allows for personalized, learning-focused preparation and enhances the overall citizenship of students. In addition to a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum, FSAPS is STEM and AdvancedEd accredited. This means students pursue advanced content for core subject areas, including high school offerings of AP courses. For two years, FSAPS has produced semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Although it is emphasized, academic excellence is only part of the equation. Students are guided by acclaimed, published, and nationally recognized experts in math, social studies,

At the 2019 graduation ceremony of FSAPS’s first senior class, the collective diversity of volunteerism, leadership, academics, athletics, and creativity were evidenced as the driving force behind the graduates. It was not one characteristic of any individual, but the collective aspects of an FSAPS education coming together to produce a complete student, prepared and ready to thrive in the outside world. Graduates from this class have gone on to pursue honor programs at some of the nation’s top universities, including: Brown, UC Berkeley, Purdue, UNC Chapel Hill, and Georgia Tech. A close second is homeowners wondering if they should do a certain home improvement project. People want to know if they should get those coveted new kitchen counters and cabinets, put in the outdoor living space, or refinish the hardwood floors. As homeowners start to envision putting their home on the market to sell, their perception of the property begins to evolve in their minds as both a home and a financial asset. Depending on the timing, we often encourage people go ahead and do the projects, particularly if the sale is a few years in the future. You should enjoy a new kitchen to entertain friends and family, or an outdoor fireplace where you can spend quiet evenings. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure your basic home maintenance items are under control. For example: have the HVAC regularly serviced and replace it if needed, check the age of the water heater, and make sure exterior items such as the roof, siding, window sills and gutters are properly maintained. While these are not exciting or sexy, good maintenance and good records are very important to buyers. Second, any improvements that you do should be in keeping with the style of the home. A brick traditional will not likely sell for top-dollar with an industrial-modern kitchen. Similarly, while you want to be in line with current trends, you do not want to be “trendy”. Keep your design choices classic and timeless. An experienced real estate agent or designer can be very helpful and guide you in your decisions.
