Port MacDonnell was once a busy port, as witnessed by the impressive Custom House. The first lighthouse in the state was built here on the rocky Cape PROOF SHEET Northumberland point in 1858.
As the beach faces the open sea and can become rough, the port was discontinued in favour of the calmer waters at Portland. A breakwater has since been built and shelters the fishing fleet and local boats. The rocky coastline provides habitat for the much sought after southern rock lobster and is a thriving industry. The jetty is a popular spot for fishing or taking a stroll and a boat HERE IS A REPRESENTATION OF YOUR ADVERT TO APPEAR ramp with self-serve fuel is further along. IN THE SOUTHERN OCEAN ROAD Famous poet and horseman extraordinaire Adam Lindsay Gordon lived here at nearby Dingley Dell cottage. DATE 13 August 2020 The rocky coast line and treacherous reefs have been the site of a number of shipwrecks in the vicinity, the most famous being the Admella. Port MacDonnell museum has some fine displays. A few years ago, timber from ships lost at sea washed up on the beach.

On entry, animals and birds of every description sit on the wall opposite an amazing mural that seems to follow you wherever you stand. Pride of place is the collection of pristine classic Crysler Valiants – with the rare 1962 Chrysler Valiant S-series ambulance, the only one in the world. See pint size hand built vintage cars, perfect in every detail. There’s rubber boots artwork, collections of dolls, prams, matchbox and other toys, kitchenalia and more in every corner. Of interest is a horse and cart and a Lego creation that took weeks to build. There’s even a skeleton!
